The font of apple. What the San Francisco font looks like

Apple on Monday introduced the next version of its operating systems - and. Among a number of improvements, the use of the new San Francisco system font, which replaced Helvetica Neue, deserves special attention. MacDigger clearly compared the font style in iOS 8 and iOS 9 beta 1.

The San Francisco font was designed specifically for the interface of the Apple Watch operating system. It should read well in small registers. Earlier, iOS 8 users complained about the poor readability of Helvetica Neue in the case of a thin outline and small case. San Francisco is also used as a font for the keyboard on a 12-inch MacBook.

Apple's love story for fonts dates back to its founding. And Steve Jobs showed his penchant for calligraphy when designing the logo. Then the proud name of the Apple Computer brand was written in Motter Tektura font, developed in 1975 by Austrian designer Otmar Motter.

In 2002, the company decides to change the scenery and selects the Adobe Myriad family as the main font. All textual information accompanying the release of such products as iPod Photo, iPod 5G, iPod Nano (1st – 2nd generation) was formatted using its own font modification - Podium Sans (with the characteristic spelling of the letters “M” and “Y”).

Helvetica Neue appeared on the iPhone and iPad with the iOS 7 update in 2013, and in OS X with the OS X Yosemite update. Designers were critical of this decision - the new font was not easy to read. “It's just a bad interface font,” said designer Frank Kimero. - Low contrast, similar shapes and so on. The letters are difficult to distinguish from each other, especially in the text typed in a small size ”. Experts believe that San Francisco is “crisp and distinct,” and better read than Helvetica Neue.

Apple products are fashion-conscious. The iPhone and iPad developers use a recognizable design and a special iOS font that gives stylish gadgets a special elegance. Users of "apple" gadgets often become entrepreneurs, businessmen, architects and designers, who with special reverence relate to text styles used both in the OS itself and in applications installed on a tablet or smartphone.

Most popular fonts for iPhone and iPad

Apple is developing dynamically, constantly improving the design of devices and the operating system. Myriad Pro Semibold sans-serif font, also used by Rolls-Royse, Walmart and even Google, is used on the boxes of all apple gadgets without exception. The keyboard of any Mac must contain the VagRounded style applied to it.

The interface of these devices uses Lucida Grande. For the iPhone and iPad, before the appearance of the Retina display, the font Helvetica was used, after - Helvetica neue. This style is not exclusive - it is successfully used by the 3M brand, BMW. Despite the high image component, many experts are skeptical about the practicality of the styles used in Apple gadgets. The company's specialists have provided such an option for the development of events, so each user of the "apple" smartphone or tablet will be able to customize the information displayed on the screen "for themselves".

How to add fonts on iOS

Any owner of an iPhone or iPad can log in and choose for themselves any application listed above. This option will allow you to use some special style (for example, Roboto Font) for daily work with the gadget. Designers often use applications for working with iOS fonts, using them for their projects.

How to change fonts on iOS

Users of Apple devices may not use third-party applications to solve the font problem with iOS - just use the built-in gadget features. It offers owners of branded tablets and smartphones ample opportunities to change the font style in the settings, as well as the Dynamic Type option (optical size fitting) integrated in iOS 7.

Dynamic type

The standard iOS 7 font is Helvetica neue. You can change the style of the text to increase readability by using a multi-level construction used to visually compare the characteristics of the fonts used.

Special sliders with seven fixation steps ( Settings - General - Text Size) will allow you to quickly adjust the size of the text displayed in the application. For those who are not satisfied with the specified maximum iOS font settings, the developers of the mobile platform have implemented the option Settings - General - Acessibility.

Users of mobile offices on the iPhone and iPad have repeatedly faced the problem of the lack of the necessary fonts. In this case, they are replaced by others, as a result of which the entire layout of the document can “fly off”. You can solve the problem using the utility. It allows you to add missing fonts to the system. This is the official app that you can use without jailbroking your gadgets.

AnyFont installation provides the ability to add any TrueType (TTF) and OpenType (OTF) type fonts to iOS. Of course, you won’t be able to change the system font without jailbreaking, but thanks to AnyFont you can significantly expand their list in third-party applications, for example, in iWork and MS Office packages.

AnyFont makes installing TTF and OFT files extremely easy. You can easily find font files on the Internet. After that, you just need to transfer them to your mobile device, for example, by sending an email or using the Dropbox client.

At the first start, AnyFont will show an empty list of fonts and indicate that the user should replenish the application directory. For example, send a Calibri TTF file to your gadget. We will use the Mail program: open the mail client, find the letter with the font, click on the attached file and select the item “Open in AnyFont”.

AnyFont opens with the Calibri TTF font. Now you need to "tap" on the font in the list, after which a large "A" button will appear with installation instructions. If you need to pre-evaluate the font, you can use the preview button.

In the process of installing the font, we need to go to the device settings and put the configuration profile. Click the install button, and then click “Install” again. The system will issue a warning that the OS is going to connect a new font and this will change the iOS settings. Click Finish to complete the installation of the system font.

Now it remains to close the office application where you need to use Calibri. When we start it again, a new one will appear among the available fonts.

If you repeat the same steps with the ZIP archive, in which several fonts are packed, then all of them will be installed in the system automatically.

To remove a font from iOS, you need to go to the menu "Settings -\u003e General -\u003e Profile" and click the "Delete" button for any unwanted font.

Apple is preparing to introduce a new version of the operating system OS X - 10.11. Of particular note is the use of the new system font. We will not wait for the official presentation, try it on right now.

News that OS X 10.11(and with it the mobile version of iOS 9) will receive a new system font somewhat amuses users and completely discourages software developers for the Mac platform. Indeed, in the event of a complete transition to Apple font “San Francisco”  developers are waiting for the tedious process of marking up the interface of their applications. Well, apparently the "policy of constancy" has changed to a policy of "unnecessary development" and there are two options: either we are skeptics, or Apple really is not working on what the user would like.

Apple and fonts

The company’s love story for fonts dates back to its founding. And Steve Jobs showed his penchant for calligraphy when designing the logo. Then the proud name of the brand Apple Computer was written in font Motter tekturadeveloped in 1975 by an Austrian designer Otmar Motter.

The choice in favor of Motter Tektura fell due to its innovation and “technological appearance”. In 1984, the Macintosh entered the market, and such an important event was met with the use of a completely new (within the company) font Apple garamond. Original ITC Garamond  was created in 1977 by Tony Stan. Its feature was a high degree of density (about 60-70% compared to traditional fonts).

That's exactly what Apple liked. Famous company slogan Think different - Think Different, as well as a number of Apple flyers, were made using the Apple Garamond font. Until the exit   Mac OS X 10.3  Apple Garamond was shipped separately as part of the designer font pack.

In 2002, the company decides to change the scenery and selects the family as the main font Adobe myriad. Two designers worked on it at once - Robert Slimbachand Carol Twombly  by order of Adobe.

All textual information associated with the release of products such as iPod Photo, iPod 5th Generation, iPod Nano (1-2th Generation), issued using its own font modification Myriad - Podium Sans  (with the characteristic spelling of the letters "M" and "Y").

All iterations of the Mac OS X operating system, later named OS X (from 1999 to 2014) received the same system font from developers -   Lucida grande. With the release of the jubilee OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the company decided to give users a new font. Helvetica neue  confidently entered the life of the makovod. Despite a number of similarities, Helvetica Neue, according to Apple designers, is more economical in distribution on a horizontal line.

The Helvetica Neue font was developed back in the days of the computer era by a Swiss typographer. Max Midingerback in 1957 in Basel (Switzerland). The font was originally named   Neau Haas Grotesk  in honor of an ancient printing factory Haas’sche schriftgiesserei. In 1960 it was renamed to familiar Helvetica, which literally translates as "Swiss". Apple Selects Font as Basis for System Font in OS X Yosemite Helvetica neuedeveloped in early 1983.

But the users' eyes did not have time to get used to the “new Swiss” for a year, as designers introduce us to the new style of letters. The recently introduced new Apple Watch uses the font family San francisco. Does he sound familiar to you? You are not mistaken. It is with San Francisco that flaunts on the layout of the new 12-inch MacBook.

The problematic of such a forced transition of the company to a new font is not only the desire of the company to unify the interface of all operating systems created for various types of Apple devices, but also the choice of a universal font. Indeed, for its more than 50-year history, Helvetica has ceased to be the elegant, perfect and rational font that was created by Swiss designers.

Weaknesses of Helvetica Neue:

  • expansion of the letter style of the whole family;
  • modified font thickness;
  • imperfect algorithm for rounding the letter space;
  • constant adaptations to linotypes (printing equipment) have led the font to become “too square”.

The forced compromises that designers made for the benefit of technology turned the font from a work of art into a soulless set of similar letters and numbers with similar attributes.

In the end, Apple decided to go back to basics and opt for the San Francisco font, developed over 30 years ago and used on the first Macintosh computers. The font was specially developed internally by NeXT, one of the most talented designers. Suzanne Kare. The original San Francisco is strikingly different from what Apple Watch uses today.

   Apple's first San Francisco font

2014 San Francisco is a brand new font family specifically designed internally for wearable accessories.

Correctly condensed letters at the same time remain readable and at the same time do not take up too much space on a horizontal line. When creating the font, Apple reworked the styles of all letters and paid a lot of attention to punctuation marks.

So, the new San Francisco font is preparing for the enslavement of OS X and iOS platforms. Well, let's see how it will look?

Font replacement

So, let's replace the standard Helvetica Neue font with the one that Apple prepares for us in the new version of the operating system.

After loading OS X Yosemite, the system font will be changed:

iPhone and iPad can be great productive devices. New features of iOS 11 will make working with them more convenient. But due to the fact that iOS is a closed system, there will always be disadvantages in it. One of them is the lack of customization options. In either MS Word or Keynote you cannot add additional fonts. But, of course, there is a third-party application that will help you with this.

All Fonts is an application for $ 0.99 for iPhone and iPad, it allows you to install any files with fonts in TTF and OTF formats directly into the system. This means that any application that reads font settings from the device will be able to display additional fonts. Applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and iWork already support this option. Like small text applications. Installing fonts is quite complicated, but when you are done with it, you no longer have to configure anything in the applications themselves. As expected for Apple, everything will work automatically.

How to transfer fonts from computer toiPhone  oriPad

All fonts in the form of files can be transferred from a computer to a device with iOS using Wi-Fi Transfer. But this only works when both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

To get started, prepare the font files on your computer.

Step 1: Run the application All Fonts  on your iPhone or iPad. Open tab Transferred fonts. It should be empty, and on top you will find the URL for importing files.

Step 2: On your computer, open a Chrome or Safari browser and enter the URL that appears in the application.

Step 3: You will see the interface window. Drag the font files from the folder to this window, and they will be automatically transferred. Make sure your iOS device is turned on and the All Fonts app is open.

Fonts will appear in the tab TransferredFonts  from above.

How to import fonts fromDropbox  oniPhone  oriPad

If you saved the fonts to Dropbox, you don’t even need a computer to install them.

Step 1: Open Dropbox and find the font you want to install. Click on it.

Step 2: Dropbox will show that it is not possible to get a font preview. Press Menu  and select Export.

Step 4: Now select "Copy toAll Fonts» .

Now All Fonts will open, and you will see that on top of the list Transferred Fonts  A new font has been added.

How to set custom font oniPhone  oriPad

Step 1: When the font is transferred, it will appear in the Transferred Fonts list. Click on it and you will see a preview. A button will appear below Install Font. Click on it.

Step 2: You will be asked to open the font in the settings. Click confirm.

Step 3: A pop-up will appear in the settings asking if you want to install the font. Press « to establish».

Step 4: In the second window, click on again "Install".

Now the font will be installed. Repeat this process for any other font you want to install.

The screenshots show the installation process from Dropbox, but you can import fonts from any other application that supports this feature. The following applications will also work: Mail, iCould Drive, OneDrive.

How to use fonts oniPhone  oriPad

Now that your chosen font is installed, you need to learn how to use it. We use Keynote as an example, but other applications work the same way.

Just find the font selection in the settings in any application, and the installed custom fonts will be displayed in the list.

Step 1: First, restart the application so that it detects the newly installed fonts.

Step 2: In Keynote or other iWork applications, click on the text, and then select the brush icon. Now find the item with fonts, click on it and find the desired font.

Step 3: To select a new font, simply click on it. If you have installed several versions of the font, click on the small “ i» , to select an alternate version of the font, like italics, etc.

Alternative: AnyFonts

All Fonts is not the only application with such functionality. We chose it because it contains the most extensive set of font import features. The only problem with this application is that you cannot install multiple fonts at the same time. For each font, you need to repeat the lengthy process again.

If this is too much for you, check out the AnyFonts app. It costs $ 1.99 and is very similar to All Fonts. But here you can install several fonts at once and open archives with files directly in the application. If you buy the pro version, you can add more than 1000 fonts from the application itself.
