Alexei Dolya, head of the InfoWatch analytical center, believes that none of the most common versions of what is happening today can withstand criticism. “It’s hard for me to believe that AOL specialists could not eliminate any elementary technical problems for such a long time. The version that the problems arose as a result of the commissioning of the new ICQ B2U contextual advertising system also looks doubtful, because the innovation does not affect alternative ICQ clients, and, as you know, many of them continue to not work, ”the expert said.
In his opinion, if such problems continue for at least some significant time, this could greatly reduce the attractiveness of the ICQ network for users and seriously shake its market position. “The incident will inevitably lead to the migration of many users to alternative instant messaging systems - from Microsoft, Yahoo! and others, moreover, it may turn out to be very significant, ”Dolya believes.
Anna Artamonova, director of marketing and PR at Mail.ru, believes that significant migration of users in Russia to other services is possible only if the problems with ICQ last for an unacceptably long period or become regular.
“This is due, firstly, to the high level of loyalty of the IM audience, and secondly, to quite significant inconveniences when switching to other services, most of which are also extremely rare in Russia,” says Artamonova.
