The packaging of the iPhone 7 Plus is traditional for Apple smartphones and practically does not differ from the packaging of the previous generation smartphone. But in the new glossy black version (Jet Black), the stylish black box design attracts attention.

As for the configuration - here, at first glance, everything is also traditional, but there is one important surprise. So, the kit includes EarPods headphones with a Lightning connector, mounted on a cardboard holder (it’s a pity that they refused a plastic box with a transparent cover, as it was before! - Apple claims, for environmental reasons), leaflets, a charger (5 V 1 A ), a Lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the cradle of the SIM card, as well as an adapter from Lightning to a 3.5 mm minijack.

This adapter is the very surprise. As we said, the new iPhone does not have a traditional headphone jack. Therefore, to use third-party wired headphones with an iPhone, you need an adapter. A big plus is that it is free and very compact.

  Design

Externally, the new iPhone is very similar to its predecessor. Dimensions and basic design elements remained unchanged. The sense of novelty is, of course, made by color solutions that were previously inaccessible: “black onyx” and “black”.

In the first days of sales, a huge stir was precisely around the “black onyx” option, which is quite logical. Here, not only the color is new, but also the coating - glossy, not brushed aluminum, like other options and previous generations of the iPhone. We tested it was him, “black onyx”, and I must say, he leaves mixed impressions.

The fact is that outwardly it looks very similar to plastic. As if the smartphone just has a black plastic case. But if you take it in your hand, you feel the coolness and heaviness typical of metal. Well, if you knock on it, then all doubts about the type of material will disappear: it is metal, not plastic. However, during use, you will very quickly encounter a problem typical of glossy plastic devices — fingerprint contamination of the case. There are no miracles, and here it is.

Of course, the cover saves from this, but the logical question arises: why chase a new color if it is still not visible under the cover? True, you can alternate the use of a smartphone in a case without it, since Apple has released a new line of cases for the new iPhone - very pleasant. Here's what a branded leather case for iPhone 7 in the color "stormy sky" looks like (it is not included in the kit, it must be purchased separately for 4100).

Live it looks prettier and in the hand it feels very nice. Although, we add a fly in the ointment, the surface of the cover is quickly covered with scratches and scuffs. This can be seen even in the photo above, although before shooting we used this case for literally several days. And one more thing: in spite of the preserved dimensions and shape, one cannot use cases for the iPhone 6s Plus with the new iPhone - the changed camera eye prevents.

Returning to the design of the iPhone itself, we note four key innovations that strongly affect the use of the device, although they are not striking from the side. First of all, it is waterproof. How long have we been waiting for her! How often there were stories about the fall of the iPhone into the toilet, getting it in heavy rain, problems after using it in winter during snowfall ... Now it's all in the past. Yes, Apple representatives emphasize that you can’t swim with the iPhone (unlike the Apple Watch Series 2). But he will survive a short-term immersion in water (such as the same fall into the toilet).

The second aspect that arises directly from the issue of moisture protection is the replacement of the round Home button with a touch zone. In fact, in terms of revolution, this change may well be compared with the rejection of the 3.5 mm jack, and it will surely cause irritation for many Apple fans. After all, this button has long been almost a symbol of the iPhone! A key design element that competitors did not dare to copy (at least in that form). And now Apple itself refuses it.

It is clear that it refuses not by any whim, but precisely because of the desire to make the smartphone waterproof. Nevertheless, the move is bold. However, Apple employs very inventive people. They rightly decided that ultimately the main thing for users is not the fact of the button being pressed, but the feeling that the person experiences. And if so, why not imitate this sensation? After all, Apple has Taptic Engine technology. And it turned out a striking thing: touching the sensory zone, we really feel about the same as when we press a physical button. Miracles! The author gave the device to several people, and those of them who did not know about this innovation in advance, but had experience using the iPhone, could not believe that the button really does not exist and this is an illusion.

The third innovation is the emergence of stereo speakers. Now the sound comes from below, where there are slots, and above, where there are no slots. This, of course, is good for watching videos and for games, although on a smartphone such usage scenarios are less convenient than on a tablet (recall that stereo speakers are on all iPad Pro models). But it will not be worse from them, that's for sure.

And finally, once again, we recall the disappearance of the standard headphone jack. Please note that the upper edge of the smartphone is now devoid of any connectors and slots, while the location of the remaining controls and slots has not changed.

Well, Apple did not radically change the appearance of the smartphone (as, for example, it was in previous “number” generations - iPhone 4, 5, 6), but made revolutionary adjustments to the functional features of the design. And if the appearance of moisture protection is a definite plus, then other innovations are more controversial. Not everyone I showed the new iPhone 7 Plus “black onyx” to, I liked it, not everyone was ready to give up such a familiar Home button and headphone jack. Here time will already show whether innovations will take root (we are almost sure that yes, they will take root). However, in any case, one cannot fail to note the ingenuity and grace with which Apple engineers and designers solved their tasks.

  Screen

The screen parameters of the iPhone 7 Plus do not differ from those of the iPhone 6 Plus: 5.5-inch diagonal, IPS-matrix resolution of 1920 × 1080. By modern standards, these are not record-breaking parameters, but, by the way, looking like a middle ground. True, with the proliferation of VR helmets, it became clear that even 2560 × 1440 resolutions are not enough on smartphones, but Apple still adheres to 1920 × 1080, apparently, not considering the use case described above is massive enough to sacrifice other parameters for ultra-high resolution.

The screen of the Apple iPhone 7 Plus is slightly darker (brightness in photos is 109 compared to 116 for Nexus 7). The doubling of the reflected objects in the screen of the Apple iPhone 7 Plus is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (specifically between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better under conditions of intense external illumination, but repairing them in the case of a cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease repellent) coating (effective, similar to that of Nexus 7), therefore fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and when displaying a white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 550 cd / m², the minimum - 2 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor. In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider - the user sets the desired brightness level for the current conditions. If you do not change anything, then in complete darkness the brightness drops to 2 cd / m² (very dark), in an office lit by artificial light (about 550 lux) the screen brightness is set to 130 cd / m² (acceptable), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) rises to 630 cd / m² (even higher than with manual adjustment). The result didn’t quite suit us, so in the dark we slightly moved the brightness slider to the right, and for the three conditions indicated above we got 16, 110-130 and 630 cd / m² (ideal). It turns out that the automatic brightness adjustment function works adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness change to the user's requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant modulation of the backlight, so there is no screen flicker.

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1300: 1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 22 ms (12 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (by the numerical value of the color) and vice versa in total takes 30 ms. Constructed at 32 points with an equal interval in the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage in either highlights or shadows. Such spectra (unfortunately) are found in top-end mobile devices from Sony and other manufacturers. Apparently, this screen uses LEDs with a blue emitter and a green and red phosphor (usually a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor), which in combination with special matrix filters allows you to get a wide color gamut. Yes, and in the red phosphor, apparently, the so-called quantum dots are used. For a consumer device, wide color gamut is not an advantage, but a significant drawback, since as a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and such the vast majority) have unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. However, unlike many eminent and not so companies, Apple knows what color gamut should be, and therefore they carefully adjust it to the sRGB borders (apparently, programmatically). As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. In this case, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. The nature of the change in values \u200b\u200bfrom hue to hue indirectly indicates that software color correction is used. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since there the color balance does not matter much, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Like the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display and the iPhone SE, this Apple device has a feature Night shift, which makes the picture warmer at night (how much warmer - the user indicates).

In any case, when having fun with a tablet or smartphone at night, it’s better to lower the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and then, to calm your own paranoia, turn the screen yellow Night shift.

To summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a summer sunny day. In complete darkness, brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, good black stability to deviation of gaze from the perpendicular to the screen plane, high contrast, as well as sRGB color gamut and good color balance. There are no significant shortcomings. At the moment, this is perhaps one of the best displays among all smartphones.

  Performance

iPhone 7 Plus runs on the new Apple A10 Fusion SoC. For the first time, the company uses a quad-core CPU, the feature of which is the presence of two cores operating at a lower frequency. They are used when high performance is not required. The idea, of course, is not new, and we have seen something similar among competitors for a long time - moreover, in the 4 + 4 configuration, and not 2 + 2. Yes, and with three gigabytes of RAM today you will not surprise anyone - the flagship models of competitors have 4 GB or even 6 GB each. But, as we have long understood, comparing iPhone performance with Android models, focusing solely on the number of cores, gigabytes and gigahertz, is wrong and pointless. So let's move on to tests, which will show how much the new product outperforms competitors or is inferior to them, as well as what performance gain is compared to the iPhone 6s Plus. We emphasize that on the iPhone 6s Plus we conducted all the tests again, since it is logical to compare models on the same OS version, that is, on iOS 10, and our first testing of the iPhone 6s Plus was conducted on iOS 9.

Let's start with the browser tests: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark and Kraken Benchmark. We also add to our standard set - a new browser benchmark, recommended by the creators of SunSpider as a replacement for it. On iOS devices, we used the Safari browser, on Samsung Galaxy Note7 - Chrome.

The picture is unambiguous: the novelty overtakes its predecessor by about one and a half times, and the main competitor - by more than two times.

Now let's see how the iPhone 7 Plus will appear in the integrated benchmark AnTuTu (recently we use it on iOS) and Geekbench 3, which measures the performance of CPU and RAM.

The layout is generally similar, although here the gap from Samsung Galaxy Note7 is not so large, and the iPhone 6s Plus looks better. However, the leadership of the iPhone 7 Plus is still undeniable.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench, as well as Basemark Metal Pro, created specifically for devices that support Metal technology. In the case of the iPhone, GFXBench Metal (a benchmark option optimized for Metal devices) was used, on the Samsung Galaxy Note7 - the usual version of GFXBench 3.

Recall that the Offscreen tests are the output to the screen of a picture in 1080p, regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests are the output of a picture in the resolution that corresponds to the screen resolution of the device. That is, Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of SoC abstract performance, and Onscreen tests - from the point of view of game comfort on a specific device.

Despite some oddities in the results (almost identical indicators of the iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 7 Plus in Manhattan Offscreen mode, but the iPhone 7 surely won in Onscreen mode, but the opposite is in the T-Rex scene), the distribution of seats remains the same: iPhone 7 ahead, last year's iPhone came next, and Samsung’s flagship came in third.

And again, the iPhone 7 Plus is in the lead.

Finally - Basemark Metal Pro. Since this benchmark is made specifically for Apple devices, the Samsung smartphone is not in the table.

Well, superiority is one and a half times - approximately this is what Apple promised us.

As a result, we can recognize that the iPhone 7 Plus is the most productive smartphone to date. Performance increase compared to the iPhone 6s Plus - up to one and a half times, the closest competitor Samsung Galaxy Note7 is also routed. This also applies to graphic benchmarks, which is most important for games. However, we will repeat what we write about the performance of flagship smartphones every time: at the time of their release, it is almost impossible to feel the difference with its predecessor and weaker competitors of the same level on real applications. Only after a year and a half game projects come out that can fully reveal their potential.

  Cameras

In the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, important updates have been made regarding the camera. We will analyze the iPhone 7 camera in a separate article, here we will focus on the capabilities of the iPhone 7 Plus camera. So, the main thing: there are now two camera modules. One is wide-angle, the other is with a telephoto lens. Right during the shooting, you can choose which of the two cameras to use, and this is done intuitively simply.

You can switch cameras even while shooting a video. It is reported that 4K video can now be shot at a frequency of not only 30 fps, but also at 60 fps. However, the option to set 60 fps when shooting in 4K was not found in the settings. From which we can conclude that either this will be added to the software later, or such an opportunity will only be when using third-party software. Here are some examples of 4K videos at 30 fps.

The first movie shot with a wide-angle lens demonstrates almost impeccable quality. In some places you can even consider the numbers of passing cars. In the third video, we see a very beautiful color and good camera performance in the backlight. By the way, both videos allow you to evaluate optical stabilization.

But clips 2 and 4 already show some flaws. In the second video, you can see the switching between the two cameras (it was done manually), and here you can clearly see that the picture quality from the telephoto lens is noticeably worse than from the wide-angle. The fourth movie attracts attention with the strong noise of the image: at dusk the camera can no longer cope, although at the time of shooting (18:48 in early October) it was still not very dark.

As expected, the camera in iPhones is no longer moving forward in quality, but it is not losing ground either. There are some minor problems with the software processing, but you could get used to them in the last two generations - all this will be fixed in the next update. Of course, it’s a little disappointing that there are still damp places in the serial sample, but this is not so critical. In good lighting, the camera produces a beautiful and fairly clean picture, but with the slightest drop in illumination, noise reduction is turned on with might and main, although the shutter speeds are not so long and the photosensitivity values \u200b\u200bare low.

A camera with a telephoto lens most likely has the same sensor, but the program with it works a little worse. Often there are areas of blur or similarity to the lubricant, despite the rather short shutter speeds. I don’t want to think badly about optics, because making a telephoto lens in this case is easier than wide-angle. It would be strange if its quality failed. However, the camera is still convenient and useful, despite the current quality of the pictures.

As a result, the iPhone 7 Plus camera can be called good. It remains to wait a bit, and then it will be possible to consider it excellent.

  Autonomous work and heating

A year ago, we noted that the battery life of the iPhone 6s Plus is one of the main advantages of the device. One and a half to two days of use, a long time in games and when watching videos - for many devices such results are unattainable. The iPhone 7 Plus does not have any superiority, but there is no significant loss compared to the iPhone 6s Plus. You can use the smartphone without recharging the same one and a half to two days (with moderate use, the smartphone can be charged once every two nights).

In our traditional test scenarios, the iPhone 7 Plus also proved worthy, although it yielded to its predecessor in the duration of playing a 3D game scene. However, the closest competitor in this test demonstrates almost twice the worst result.

It can be seen that the heating is strongly localized in the upper right part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 41 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), this is not very much.

iPhone 7 Plus is a controversial device. This is an unconditional flagship with many advantages, including record-breaking performance, long battery life and low heat when playing 3D games, a traditionally beautiful screen and an innovative (albeit imperfect) camera. 1. Design. Matte black is better

Someone has to discover the terrible truth about the iPhone: Space Gray can not be compared with Apple's new matte color scheme. It would seem, well, black and black. I hold it in my hands and see another proof of Apple's magic in action.

3. Touch Home button. I do not like

In iPhone 7, the Home button is not pressed. This is not even a button, but simply a touchpad. The history of the most famous keys in smartphones ended abruptly and unexpectedly.

Clicking is played virtually   - the amplified Taptic Engine module is responsible for this. It looks like this: just a little push on the button, and the entire bottom of the iPhone 7 emits a vibrational click. The effect is more like cotton or even knocking.

There is no old “click” at all, the new vibration feedback mechanism does not try to reproduce it.

The button’s performance has not changed: the phone unlocks instantly, the fingerprint is recognized instantly, just like on the iPhone 6s. You only have to get used to the effect.

Apple allowed application developers from the App Store to create special vibrations for the iPhone 7. And only for the "seven". In the future, games will make the smartphone in a special way "tremble" depending on what is happening on the screen. The idea is cool, we are waiting for the implementation and we regret that 6s in flight.

When setting up the iPhone 7 for the first time, you can adjust the vibration power. We left the average, it is enough to recognize the difference between all the effects. The new “motor” is really good, very clear and (IMHO) better than in the Apple Watch.

6. Performance. The difference is not visible

Phil Schiller burst into a nightingale, talking about a 50% performance increase at the presentation of the iPhone 7. But at the moment you don't notice a “crazy” performance increase.

This is normal. Thousands of developers rushed into the battle, creating new textures, graphics, effects and other "beautiful" that will reveal the full potential of the "seven".

Now the velvet season for owners of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus is passing, when the App Store does not have resource-intensive applications and games, sharpened by the A10 processor and graphics subsystem. A week or two you can be like with 6s.

7. Screen. Has become brighter and richer

We did not notice this until we began to compare the screens of the iPhone 7 and 6s. Every year, the quality of the display gets better, fact. It was great before.

Red, yellow and green colors look brighter. With an interesting caveat: unlike Samsung's AMOLED, details in photos on saturated backgrounds do not “light up” at maximum brightness.

If you reduce the brightness by 1/3 of the maximum, then the difference in color rendering between the new and old iPhones is almost not visible. Most keep the brightness just like that and will never notice an improvement in quality.

In the viewing angles, nothing has changed, everything is fine.

8. New EarPods with Lightning cable. Sound the same
