Joomla is a very interesting solution for quickly creating an online store or sites of a different orientation. But you need to understand the main advantages of this CMS in order to call your choice really conscious, because there are certain disadvantages that also need to be taken into account.

Official Joomla! joomla.org/3/en

Key features of CMS Joomla

This CMS is considered one of the most sought after and popular. Creating a site using this engine can be fast enough, without additional problems. Joomla allows you to create fairly complex projects for people who do not have vast experience working with PHP.

Key Benefits of Joomla

1. Availability

CMS Joomla is free, which makes it a popular option for aspiring entrepreneurs who still find it difficult to allocate money to buy expensive professional engines. Today you can see a large number of shareware CMS, in this case you will not be able to create a unique site, making adjustments in the process of its creation. Such actions will be regarded as violations of the original agreement. And Joomla allows you to modify sites at your own discretion, there are no restrictions in this case.

2. Easy to install

Joomla can be installed quite quickly and easily, the process of creating a site is convenient and understandable. If you need new templates - a huge number of different solutions are presented on the Internet, there are even large-scale, paid templates. In order to quickly deal with the features of the operation of Joomla, just watch a few video tutorials that are full of the Internet.

3. The system is open

No proprietary components, Joomla CMS is fully open source. Users can edit it, taking into account their own preferences - this is one of the main advantages of Joomla.

You will have the opportunity not only to edit the source code of Joomla, make the necessary adjustments to the design, but also create sites to order on Joomla in order to receive a certain reward. Today it is difficult to find an alternative CMS with such a set of features.

There is only one limitation for those who are going to use Joomla in their work. You can not make changes to the license, infringe copyright.

4. A huge number of components and modules

In mid-2005, the first version of this CMS appeared. Quite a lot of time passed, Joomla was actively developing, innovative components and modules were created. A variety of galleries appeared, integration with new payment systems.

This approach allows you to use Joomla to create incredibly stylish sites, if during work there is a problem with certain components, you can simply find several groups of freelancers that host amateur development of members of the huge Joomla community.

5. The site created on Joomla is quite simple and practical.

Today you can find a large number of CMS used to create sites. Almost all of them differ in a rather complicated "admin panel", which makes resource management very difficult.

Users of such systems encounter problems when performing basic actions. It takes 5-7 separate steps to create a simple page - this is quite complicated and inconvenient.

Joomla has a simple intuitive "admin", all the necessary functionality is available to all users. Just 2 clicks are enough to carry out the required action.

6. Russification of various modules and extensions

Enthusiasts continue to translate popular Joomla modules into Russian, this makes it possible to significantly simplify the work with them in the admin panel. If you find a module in which there is initially no choice of the Russian language - just search on Google, you will definitely find a crack.

7. The system is regularly updated, new useful modules appear.

Joomla is constantly updated, new modules appear, developers protect the system from attacks by hackers, patching a variety of holes. Given the popularity of CMS, its updating occurs quite often.

8. Assistance in resolving complex issues

If you encounter a specific problem while working with Joomla, you can safely find the answer to your question - there are a huge number of user support groups for this CMS. There is always information that will be important and useful to you.

9. Hosting

Joomla is a universal CMS and most modern hosting services are suitable for it.

Important disadvantages of CMS Joomla

It is worth highlighting several factors:

  • The structure of some elements of the system is not finalized;
  • The system is very poorly protected from outside interference;
  • Periodically indexing the site suffers;
  • Sometimes it’s difficult to update the system immediately after the next update;
  • There is no official support service.

findings

Whether or not to use Joomla CMS is up to you. In our opinion, Joomla has more advantages than disadvantages. And the openness of the code gives almost unlimited possibilities for applying a large number of ideas and ideas in the implementation!

Overview of the Joomla engine (Jumla): advantages and disadvantages of CMS, features, additional features and extensibility.

Joomla  - One of the most popular open source CMS. In RuNet, more than 25% of sites are made on this content management system.

Jumla  It has found wide application in various areas of the Internet business, it has been successfully used to create projects of any complexity, sharpened for any purpose: from simple websites to large information and commercial portals.

It is characterized by ease of installation and management, reliability. Website development and further maintenance does not require special knowledge and skills.

Joomla  repeatedly recognized as the best free CMS at international exhibitions and conferences. In 2011, she won first place in the Open Source CMS nomination.

Joomla Benefits

  1. Convenient, easy to use and learn admin panel. Any standard task can be solved in just a few clicks. The interface is nice, not overloaded with details, everything is in place. Great for novice users, because Joomla  out of the box has all the most necessary elements for productive work on the project;
  2. Joomla  constantly updated and improved, bugs and vulnerabilities are fixed. New modules and features are added. For example, in new versions, micro-layout of pages is automatically enabled;
  3. There are many additional modules and templates, among which there are both paid and free solutions. A large number of templates and documentation for them have been translated into Russian;
  4. Joomla  - A universal engine, it can be successfully used to solve a wide range of tasks.

Disadvantages of joomla

  1. The system needs additional security features (however, this is common to all existing CMS, and not just this one);
  2. Joomla  copes with large and heavy sites poorly: performance and responsiveness are significantly reduced. Therefore, it is undesirable for beginners (who do not have fine tuning skills) to use joomla as a platform for online stores or forums;
  3. Website promotion requires additional careful tuning.

However, you should not focus on the above disadvantages. Firstly, everything is fixable, and with appropriate preparation, all the shortcomings are easily eliminated. Secondly, none of the existing CMS (especially free ones) is not devoid of these problems, and if this short list pushes you away, think about whether it is worth looking for another CMS, where it’s more than enough of your own problems, which are much more specific?

Additional features and extensibility

Despite the fact that the system comes with all the necessary tools, and is ready for use immediately after installation, it is possible to expand the functionality. All the elements that are needed for your site, not included in the standard package, can be delivered independently. Fortunately, there are thousands of additional modules, plugins and components, both paid and free, which allow you to add the desired functionality in a matter of minutes.

Finding the right extension is easy. On the Internet there are numerous Russian and English-speaking communities, providing extensions for every taste, with detailed instructions for installation and use, reviews of real users. There is an official community for all extensions joomla.

Features of CMS Joomla

Joomla  allows you to implement a project of any complexity, for any purpose:

  • Personal pages;
  • One-page sites and business card sites;
  • Corporate sites
  • Information portals;
  • Internet shops;
  • Online magazines
  • And much more.

Please note that in addition to setting up the CMS itself, you should also take care of stable and reliable hosting. There are no special system requirements for the engine, but experience has shown that poor hosting reinforces system flaws and is also a common cause of malfunctions. As for good hosting, it will undoubtedly add a couple more positive aspects, emphasize the existing ones (which is especially important, the speed of the site). Therefore, choose a host that can guarantee the stable operation of the equipment.

Somehow, while traveling through the Internet, I accidentally came across several very nice sites!

I took a closer look and found out that these sites were made using free enginecontent management systems   Jumla  (original name: " Joomla"). I dug even deeper ....

What is Jumla? A group of developers-enthusiasts completely voluntarily and for free developed under this brand site content management system.

And now it offers it to everyone who wants to use it, to do its bit by writing new modules, instructions in different languages \u200b\u200band to carry out other actions aimed at popularizing the system.

Jumla   Now a very popular system. The Society of Jumla lovers consists of many thousands of programmers, site managers, webmasters, students, schoolchildren living in different countries.

The first impression is always the strongest, although it is sometimes erroneous. In short, I also wanted to "pile" something similar.

I read the technical parameters and jumla features:

To create fully functional sites  on Joomla, it’s enough to have the most primitive knowledge of HTML. And the simplest sites can be created without any knowledge at all.

Joomla is created on a block-modular basis. It can be compared with the designer, where everything consists of blocks, and by removing or adding new blocks and modules, we control the appearance and functionality. This is very important for understanding the self-modification of the site structure.

Downloaded jumla distributionfrom the official site, I watched a training video there, read a small explanation of the Joomla developers:

"If you read anything about Content Management Systems  (CMS), you probably know at least the following:

CMSs are in most cases prohibitively expensive and some CMSs are very difficult to manage and use. Joomla! designed to change this view ...

Millions of sites in the world are built specifically on Joomla! (by the way, this is exactly what you need to write - with an exclamation mark at the end!), and the number of such sites is growing rapidly.

Curiously, the word Joomla! comes from “Jumla,” which in Swahili means “all together.” And indeed it is. Millions of sites on the network are united by this wonderful CMS.

To start working with Joomla you need basic skills!

About HTML, PHP and other horrors of programmers can be forgotten forever, unless you want to create sites  under the order or to create templates and extensions for this system.

Just make sure your hosting is suitable for joomla installation, install it and enjoy creating your first website.

Joomla!very different from conventional portal systems. For starters, it’s not complicated. Joomla! was designed for the general public.

It is licensed under the GNU / GPL (i.e., free), easy to install and manage, and very reliable. Joomla! "Does not require the user or administrator of the HTML knowledge system to manage and work with it."

Is it important to know programming languages
   for mastering CMS Joomla?

No, knowledge of programming languages \u200b\u200bfor mastering joomla  and creating sites on it is not needed. If you possess knowledge of programming languages, then you will be able to write your extensions in the future under Jumla, because This CMS is open source.

But - this is hardly useful to you, because the available extensions for Joomla, which can be downloaded on the Internet very, very much.

I unpacked everything, began to install ....... yes I got stuck in the settings. In general, I realized that without any serious training videos  I’ll lose a lot of time, but now it’s expensive !!

Although the system is friendly ...... and any beginner, having a little practice, will be able to create a professional site on Joomla himself. But time .. !!

This is a content management system for the site (its content, functionality, etc.), which currently takes on a variety of forms through the use of various attachments, which in Jumla are called extensions and components. CMS is used for more flexible and multi-functional site construction and management. This is a kind of skeleton, a framework on which all sorts of different plug-ins, modules, extensions and components are already hung. Today there are many site builders (CMS), for example, the same, or DLE, but today we will consider the most popular system after WordPress -.

In truth, about 10-15 years ago, Jumla was the leading CMS on the Internet - almost all sites were made on its basis, at least most of them. Over time, WordPress began to supersede Joomla with its more advanced functionality and ease of installation and operation. But, nevertheless, now about 30% of users and webmasters work on Joomla, so it makes direct sense to get to know this constructor better. So here we go.

In Jumla, all the functionality is organized in such a way that administrator intervention is practically not required, except when publishing articles. A site map, for example, is created automatically and in the background, that is, nothing is required from the site owner. Extensions after they are downloaded and configured also work independently. CMS allows you to use additional functions, for example, you can create a forum, an online store, a portal with movies, a photo gallery, a video archive such as YouTube - all these features are provided in the form of extensions, components, add-ons and plugins in Jumla. All that is necessary in order to rebuild the site to fit your needs is to install the extension or component you need.

As for the organization of functionality, it’s a free constructor, and all its components are also distributed free of charge on the Internet. So if you see that some kind of template for Jumla or an extension is being sold, then you should know that someone just wants to cut the loot. True, this statement is not relevant for all cases. There are good paid extensions and plugin components. But, as a rule, most of all these elements can be found in free access.

Therefore, if you decide to work with Joomla, then it is best to use its official Russian-language site - http://joomla.ru/. Today you can download and install version of Joomla 3.0.3 - this is the most advanced version of the designer, Russian-language and has a lot of pre-installed functionality. Installing Jumla is almost as easy as Voppress - well, a little longer and more steps will need to be taken. And the admin panel is also radically different, but with a certain skill you can manage your site with your eyes closed - the panel is designed for an intuitive understanding of the interface.

Below video how to install joomla 3 on hosting

When I first read the word "Joomla", I thought it was some kind of African beast. The reality turned out to be simpler and not so scary. Translated from Swahili, the word Joomla means "All together!". That is, in the title - a direct hint that this is a free open source constructor. Anyone can offer to make their changes to this CMS, and he will not be anything for it, except for fame. True, he will not receive money either. The community of supporters of Jumla is a army of many thousands, and maybe already many millions. At various Russian and foreign forums, more than a million people discuss working with Joomla, and every year there are more and more of them, as there are more sites on the Joomla engine.

To start working with Joomla, you do not need any professional skills, and to create your own website with full functionality, you will need the most minimal set of knowledge of the language. - as a children's designer. You can organize any functionality by simply adding the necessary extensions. In the same way, you can work with website design - change templates, or add some design elements to them, for example, widgets or modules. On the Internet you can always find countless templates for Jumla, which you do not even need to modify. By simply uploading such a template to the appropriate directory, you will instantly change the site design.

All the necessary extensions for Joomla (it's like WordPress plugins) can be downloaded from extensions.joomla.org. Almost every day new developments appear there, so you will find everything that the soul desires. Detailed descriptions and examples will help you quickly understand the installation and operation of a particular extension. But the main thing in this CMS is a clear and fairly simple user interface. A newbie with little understanding of this constructor can install and configure his site on Joomla himself. The list of amenities, advantages and benefits of this engine can be continued for a long time, but it will be too long. It’s easier to install Joomla on the site yourself and start using it. How to do this, I will describe in detail in this article, but a little later, but for now about what else this constructor can do.

Joomla CMS components - what they are for

You can literally do wonders on this CMS. Just a few examples of components, and you will understand a little more about Joomla. So:

1. Akeeba Backup Backup Component

All Joomla components are free to distribute, and the new version of Akeeba Backup 3.1 is no exception. This extension is an open source component, and it is intended to create backup copies of the site on Joomla and its database. An archive that can be created using this component includes all Joomla files, a backup copy of the database, and also with its help you can restore the entire site at any time. The component also has advanced paid versions. This improved version added three new features and fixed bugs of previous versions, one of which was critical.

2. Component for organizing the Kunena forum

The forum extension developers for Joomla Kunena 1.5.13 announced the creation of a new version. In this extension, errors of previous versions were mainly fixed, nothing new was added. Forums are created by many webmasters, and the Jumla forum is a very functional tool. Attracting users to communicate on the forums is much more lively, if properly organized

3. A component for organizing a Phoca Guestbook guestbook site

An improved free guestbook component for Joomla called Phoca Guestbook 1.4.3. In this version, the Czech developer Jan Pavelka replaced the eregi function calls with preg_match. This improved the compatibility of the functional with PHP 5.4, a new parameter also appeared - a suffix, which performs the function of changing the name of a CAPTCHA session.

4. Component for creating PDF documents from Phoca PDF content

The same Jan Pavelka published a new version of the Phoca component PDF 1.0.8. This functionality is based on the non-profit TCPDF library, the component can create PDF files from the content of the site on Joomla. The TCPDF library in the new component has been updated to version 5.9.009, and now Phoca PDF has the ability to work with the Phoca PDF VirtueMart plugin.

5. XGallery Gallery Component

A component for creating an image gallery for Joomla sites called XGallery 1.9.2. As a result of the work, the component now uses the heading name on the site for the main name. This improves the gallery’s SEO performance. A function has been added to visually display the description. In order to enable it, you need to add a small description for the main section - ID \u003d 1.

6. Art Adminer Database Management Component

Component Art Adminer 1.0.1 is a simple and convenient tool for working with the site database. This extension is an analogue of the well-known phpMyAdmin web application, but differs in that it can be used to enter the database directly from the site admin panel. This is really convenient - no need to go to the hosting, then to phpMyAdmin, etc. You can connect in automatic mode and work with all available databases.

7. Snippets Quick Insert Insert Component

The NoNumber programming team has released an updated version of the Snippets 0.3.0 component, which can insert ready-made notes into the site’s content. The peculiarity of the work of this extension is that special tags will be visible only in edit mode, and when publishing material on the site, an entire note will be visible instead of these tags. This component will be convenient when using identical-sized parts in the content.

8. Feed Gator component - news aggregator for the site

The free feed aggregator feed version Gator 2.3 RC1 is now ready for use. This extension can import the content of RSS feeds of your subscriptions and display it on the site in any format available for Joomla. The early beta versions had several serious bugs that were fixed in the new release, and several new features were added. Version Feed Gator 2.3 RC1 is stable, and therefore recommended for free use.

9. Narrowly targeted Ticketmaster component - for ordering tickets for events

The Ticketmaster 1.0.9 component is created on a commercial basis. This is done because this highly specialized extension performs the following functions: it allows the user to order tickets for various events on your website. The ticket is added to the basket, and then sent in PDF format to the customer’s address. Ticketmaster has its own libraries for working with PDF files. In this version, previous errors were fixed, a scheduler was added to automatically create tickets and send them to the user.

10. Component for uploading files to site materials Attachments for content articles

The free component of Attachments for content articles 2.1.2 is also already available online. The component downloads the file and attaches it to the text or to other content on the site (to the image, table, to other files). This function can be organized both in the administrative part and in the user interface. The expansion has many opportunities, and you can get acquainted with all on the official Joomla website or on the developer's website.

Joomla Designer Support

Of course, with such an extensive audience of Joomla users, technical and software support is indispensable. Below I have cited several resources for Russian-speaking users where you can always discuss Joomla problems and download the necessary components, extensions or templates:

    Joomla Extensions Catalog  - The official catalog of components and extensions. You can download all available extensions, plugins or components from this repository.

    Website www.joomla.org  - official site of CMS Joomla

    Website help.joomla.org  - documentation, tutorials, manuals - in general, everything related to working with Joomla

    Joom.Ru. The site “Russian Joomla House!” Is the official site for Russian-speaking users of Joomla

What can Joomla

Now you have a little idea what Jumla is. But one thing is important to remember: Joomla is just a tool in the hands of a webmaster. In order for your new site to be truly effective, profitable and attract new users, the quality of the content, its proper architecture and, of course, the design of the site are important. How is content building organized in Joomla? These are sections, then there are categories (headings) of sections in which the content itself (content, articles) of the site is already published. This is just the beginning. Decide how you organize the content on the site, and it will be easier for you to configure the CMS to display the information correctly. The hierarchical construction of content on the site will be approximately as follows:

1. Section 1.0

5. Section 2.0

And so, how much is needed.

True, there are many ways to organize content in Joomla. Below video - The logic of organizing content in Jumla

Then you need to create a site menu - with its help, it will be much easier for the visitor to find the information that interests him. A menu can indicate not only sections or categories, but also individual pages or posts. It is necessary to correctly title both the menu and the headings, pages and pages of entries on the site. This is also necessary for a more understandable orientation. An interesting fact is that a visitor reads text on a site 25% faster than on a typewritten page. And this is sad, because you will only have (on average) 7 seconds to make the user interested in the site. Now it’s clear why it is so important to build and arrange everything correctly? Here are some proven tips for a general understanding of the situation:

1. For a large record, make an introduction, after reading which the user will be able to familiarize themselves with the full version of the article.

2. The most significant definitions (in fact, these are keywords) should be placed at the beginning of the sentence or in its middle, but not at the end.

3. More often use structured lists to display data.

4. Write subheadings: explain to visitors what will be discussed further in the article.

If you used Joomla before, then you probably noticed that the content of the site from the site design is completely separate. Fonts, color styles, graphic elements, positioning - all this is already embedded in the site template. Creating a template requires a good knowledge of CSS as well.

But you, I hope, will not need it, because there are countless already created free Joomla templates, and you just have to choose your favorite. Templates can be distinguished not only by color design, but also by many technical parameters. This is the location of the modules (in WordPress - widgets), and the number of columns, and the rubber or fixed width of the template, and much more. Now hosting services represent Linux as the main platform and environment, and this platform meets all the requirements for the technical organization of hosting. It:

1. PHP version 4.2 and higher. At the moment, the most stable version is considered to be PHP 5.3.

2. The control system for your MySQL database version 3.23 and higher.

3. Free Apache server version 1.3.19 and higher.

To set up your new site on Joomla, you will need to create the following data:

1. Create a new MySQL database name.

2. Create a new database username.

3. Create a strong password for the database. Reliable - this is when the password contains numbers and letters, with letters both small and large.

4. Specify the host name for your new database.

If the tariff plan that you have chosen on the hosting supports several MySQL databases, then you can create a separate database for Joomla. Further I will tell you how to quickly install Joomla on the site and create a new database.

Easy Joomla Installation

The control panels are now unified on almost all hosting sites, so you will understand what I will tell and show. Go to your control panel and select the menu item "Install CMS" on the left. You will see a list of all the proposed CMS for installation. Naturally, choose Joomla:

Next, you will see a pop-up window in which you will need to select the version of Joomla to install. In principle, you can select any one, and then in the admin panel update it to the last. I chose Joomla 3.0.3 - this is the latest version at the moment. Click "Install", and go to the next level of constructor installation:

Now you need to fill in all (!) Fields in this list. But, since you do not have a database yet, your installation will be denied. So let's go back a bit and create a new database for the site on Joomla 3.0.3. What is needed for this? We go to the menu item "MySQL Databases" and create a new database by clicking on the link "Create Database". Next you will see this window:

Here we need to indicate the name of the database (think of any, only in Latin), indicate the encoding, check the box "Create a user with the same name and full access to the database." That's all, the database is created. Now we return to the installation of CMS Joomla on the site. As you remember, we had to fill out all the fields, agree to the license and click the “Install” button. Now we wait 10-15 minutes, and the system will inform you about this:

During this time, the system itself will install the Joomla constructor on your site. You just have to do its settings. Here's what your site will look like with a standard predefined template:

And in order to get into the administrative part of the site, you need to specify your username and password, which you prescribed at the beginning of the installation of CMS Joomla. In the admin panel, you can create sections, categories, fill them with content, upload images to articles, and much more.
