Today I want to talk about such a popular phenomenon as Twitter. In relation to webmasters, this social network can help attract additional visitors to your site, as well as other social networks. For example, such as, and, and also Tweeter can serve as a kind of analogue.

For example, as far as I know, many visitors to my blog site follow its updates through this microblogging service. But in order for this to work as it should, you will need to understand what Twitter is, how to get registered in it and how to use it.

By the way, recently the registration form and the interface of this service have been completely translated into Russian, which is good news. True, when this article was written, this social group was not friends with the Russian language at all, so I had to rewrite and supplement something.

What is Twitter and how to use it?

So, what is Twitter - first of all, it is a service intended for communication. It has replaced (or in addition) traditional social networks that have snapped up, and its audience is growing like a snowball. Now, it is probably already difficult to meet a person who has never heard of him or similar microblogging services (FriendFeed, etc.).

Nevertheless, for many, the essence of these services is still not clear and therefore it is worth answering the question “What is Tweeter” in a little more detail. In this series of articles I will try to tell in detail about how to register in it (now already in Russian), how to work with it, how to gain subscribers (followers), how to automatically post headings of new materials on your site into it (it will be) .

Twitter was created in 2006, and by the beginning of 2007 had already gained sufficient popularity. Sometimes it is characterized as microblogging due to the fact that the size of the message left in it is limited to 140 characters. Due to this limitation, in Twitter messages using special services up to something like this: http://bit.ly/4J2b1R.

Due to the small length of messages, communication on it is very convenient to conduct from a mobile phone. Actually, Twitter was designed for this, because in it the limit is 140 characters per message, and in a mobile phone, as you know, the limit is 160 characters (in SMS messages). The remaining 20 characters can be used for the sender name.

But for this you will have to provide a username and password to access your Email. My main mailbox is located just on Gmail, but somehow I did not dare to transfer his password to Twitter.

If you decide to take this step, then apparently, based on your address book, all users from it who also have an account in this microblogging service will be found. Well, and you can add them to your friends.

Twitter over the time elapsed since the writing of this article, managed not only to start supporting the Russian language, but also got a new interface. Therefore, immediately after successful registration, you will be taken to a page at the very top of which will be pictograms of your next steps.

The step described in the previous paragraph is now called “Friends” and has the number 3:

A new step has appeared in the new interface, which opens after registration - “Interests”. On this tab, you can tell exactly which topics you are interested in. Having opened one of the proposed topics, you will see the tapes available in it.

To subscribe to them you only need to click on the button "To read"located nearby. As a result, the button will change its appearance and the inscription “I read” will appear on it:

How to change the background for Twitter?

By default, the background of your profile will be decorated in blue, but you can change it, as well as the color of the panels, the color of the font and links on your page as you wish. For example, my Twitter looks like so.

You can also see how the interface of this service looked like before. To do this, you will need to select the option "To the old Twitter" from the drop-down list next to your "Username" (located in the upper right corner):

To customize the design of your page, select “Settings” from the top menu (see the screenshot above), and in the window that opens, select “Design”.

To set the background of your page on Twitter, you can use the proposed options by simply clicking on them with the mouse. If none of the proposed backgrounds you liked, then you can use your image file as.

To do this, click on the “Change Background Image” button under the thumbnails of the backgrounds, click on the “Select File” button and find the graphic file on your computer.

By clicking on the “Change design colors” button on the right under the thumbnails in the Twitter settings, you will be able to:

  1. fill the background with one color, which you can choose by clicking on the square with the inscription "background"
  2. set the color of the text on the pages of your account by clicking on the square with the inscription "text"
  3. select a hue for the design of all links by clicking on the square with the words "links"
  4. you can select the background color and frame color for the right sidebar on your web page in Twitter by clicking on the “panel” and “border” squares, respectively

After you finish doing aesthetic refinements, do not forget to save the changes by clicking on the corresponding button at the very bottom. At first I did not notice it and, as a result, I had to adjust the background and design of my Twitter account again. In the same settings window, on the “Profile” tab, you can fasten the profile picture by selecting the desired picture in the “Image” area.

Select "Profile" from the top settings menu. Here you can make changes to the existing data of your profile, and I also recommend adding the address of your web project to the “More Info URL” field. What is remarkable, he will be.

But recently, search engines can still take into account, to one degree or another, backlinks from this microblogging service.

How to use Twitter (now in Russian)?

By selecting the “Notifications” item from the top settings menu, you can configure: about what events you will receive messages by E-mail, for example, when someone subscribed to your feed (follow you). Directly from the sent letter, you can go to the web page of this person by clicking on his name:

After reviewing the content of his messages, you can decide to subscribe or unsubscribe to his Twitter feed. To subscribe you will need to click on the button "To read"  (in the English version of the interface - “Follow”, from where the feet of the terms follow, follow and follow) grow at the top of the window:

Subscribing to a message from a user or, alternatively, “Follow” someone on Twitter (Follow), means adding someone to your contact list. This is what we just did by clicking on the “Follow” button.

But this user will not be able to see your news until he adds you to his contact list. It’s easiest to create a Twitter contact list by adding users with similar interests. You add them, and they add you.

To do this, you can use the search on Twitter - http://search.twitter.com/. Ask your interests in the search bar and as a result you will get a huge list of inhabitants of this service who are interested in the same thing. Requests, of course, can be entered in Russian too.

As soon as you start adding users to your contact list, their messages will appear in your feed. To get into your news feed  you just need to go to the address TWITTER.COM, click on the "Login" link at the top of the window and enter your login and password specified during registration.

If the browser remembers the username and password, then after going to the above address, you will immediately get into the news feed with messages from those twitter users that you are following.

If you don’t like the posts of any user and you don’t want to read them anymore, then you can unsubscribe from receiving messages from this user by going to his page (tape). To do this, you will need to click on either his name or his avatar in the message. On his page on Twitter, move the mouse cursor to the “Read” button, which will change to a button "Cancel", and click on it:

There are some more small buttons that will help to receive this user's messages on a cell phone, etc. You can write your message on Twitter in the form provided for this at the very top home page  with an inscription "What's happening?". When you start typing a message, you will see the number of characters that can still be typed to the right to the bottom of this form. B, but for this you will always have to have them at hand, because you will not find a built-in tool like Vkontakte in this social network.

To reply to an existing message on Twitter, simply move the mouse cursor to it and click on the message that appears at the bottom of the message "To answer"  (in the English version - "Reply").

After that, the name of the user whose message you are going to write the answer will be automatically added to the response form, and the @ sign will stand before this name, meaning that this is, in fact, a response.

Often messages are read through specialized programs, and not through an Internet browser. There are quite a few such programs. Can send private messages  via Twitter that other users will not see. To do this, the recipient must follow you, then you can on his web page, by analogy with the unsubscribe method discussed just above, click on the arrow next to the button that resembles the sun and select "Direct message username" from the drop-down list.

To summarize, we can generalize and say that Twitter is a service that is an explosive mixture of a blog with ICQ. But still, this is not exactly a blog. He is precisely a means of communication and information. With it, you can meet interesting people even if you are not added to each other's contact list.

If the person you need is not subscribed to your updates, you can still reply to his messages by simply pasting him into the response form @ sign in front. As a result, he will notice you and you can finish in any form convenient for you (icq, etc.).

But besides this, of course, Twitter can bring visitors to your site in an amount proportional to the number of your followers, if you, for example, set up automatic posting of the headers of your new materials. But about this and that, and setting up posting there for the headers of new articles from your website, I will tell the next article.

By the way, Twitter developers have recently launched another social project, however, aimed at users of mobile gadgets. Now it’s great rapidly gaining popularity, so I advise you to familiarize yourself with the article provided by reference in order to, so to speak, keep up with life ...

Good luck to you! See you soon on the blog pages site

Twitter revolution

The Internet today is not only a global social network, but also an effective tool that influences the formation of youth views, including political views. provided by social networks played an important role in the so-called Arab spring. In the Arab spring, most activists used the social network as a key tool in expressing their discontent against the ruling regime. Activists used protest organizations, Twitter to disseminate information, and YouTube to show it to the world.

Such concepts as “twitter revolution” and “revolution through social networks” firmly entered the scientific circulation precisely after the events of the Arab spring.

About Twitter Revolutions

On April 21, Time magazine published a list of the 100 most influential people of 2010. The first place is occupied by Wael Ghonim, an Egyptian who created a Facebook page on the social network, where he urged compatriots to go out with protests. Nobel laureate and former IAEA director Mohammed ElBaradei describes Wael as follows: “He quickly realized that social media, especially Facebook, emerged as the most powerful communication tool for mobilizing ideas. Insisting that the regime hears citizens only when they exercise their right to peaceful demonstration and civil disobedience, Wael helped initiate a call for peace. The answer was a miracle: the movement, which began on January 25 with thousands and ended with 12 million Egyptians, overthrew Hosni Mubarak and his regime. What Wael and the young Egyptians did like fire spread throughout the Arab world. ”

Twitter-revolution-what is it?

Protests against the results of the elections in and Moldova in 2009, anti-government protests in Egypt and Tunisia in 2010, demonstrations in Libya, Yemen and Morocco in 2011, - during all these events, a tool for coordinating activists social networks, primarily Facebook and Twitter. Not surprisingly, journalists and scientists are talking about a new phenomenon - the Twitter revolution.

The author of the term Twitter revolution was an American researcher of Belarusian origin Evgeny Morozov. He applied this expression to the mass protests of Moldovan youth against the results of the parliamentary elections in 2009.

Twitter Revolutions and Technology

Chisinau Twitter Revolution 2009

Chisinau riots - April 7 riots in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, which began after the April 2009 parliamentary elections in Moldova. The riots were preceded by a rally of the Moldovan opposition on April 6.

Open sorce is still reaping the fruits of his passion. The software that Jack wrote is now used by many taxi service providers. In 2000, Dorsey moved from Missouri to California, as he was tired of working for his uncle.

In California, he organized a courier and passenger transportation company. In the same 2000, Jack Dorsey registered an account in LJ. If this did not happen, then perhaps Jack continued to pursue his small company.

LiveJournal was then a young and not yet popular (as it is now) service. And user registration was carried out then by special invitations. Jack liked LJ. Soon the young programmer came up with the idea to make LJ more “alive”. And for this it was just necessary to add one opportunity - the ability to publish your thoughts in real time.

But the idea went to the box. And Jack was captured by work on new projects. He recalled his idea in 2005, when he was an employee of Odeo Inc.

Prototype Twitter service in 2005

Odeo Inc has shown interest in text messaging services. This led Dorsey to the company. The company had not the best of times, but was strong, so new projects and ideas were required.

Dorsey shared with his colleagues the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a service that would help people to always be online. With this server you could know about activities and making friends. Jack wanted to make adding new records faster and easier. Therefore, the emphasis was on short text messages and mobile phones. Hence the limitation in the length of the message (up to 140 characters).

The idea was approved. And two weeks later a prototype of the service was created. Everyone was delighted after watching the working model. The service was simple but complete. Testing of the service began in closed mode. There were about 50 users.

Biz Stone had a difficult weekend during the testing - repair, furniture relocation. And at some point the mobile gave a signal. Looking at the display, Biz found out that Jack was resting in Napa and sipping wine. Then Stone was imbued with this idea.

Twitter Launch

The service was called Twttr (from “Twitter” - “Twitter”). The service was launched at Twttr.com. This happened because the Twitter.com domain was already taken.

But Odeo was doing very poorly. the company had to constantly cut. The service was started, but there was no success. Users simply indulged, because they did not understand why and to whom all this was needed.

First Twitter investor

Months passed, but nothing changed. Only Twitter.com was bought by Odeo, and Twttr turned into Twitter. Initially, the project had one unique one. It was an IT activist and Evan Williams. Williams was one of the founders of Odeo.

And in order to support Twitter, Williams, Dorsey and Stone and some other employees created Obvious Corp. and they acquire Odeo and all of it, including Odeo.com and Twitter.com, with investors and shareholders. Twitter became owned by a separate company in April 2007.

Twitter boom in 2006-2007

The service began to get on its feet in 2006-2007. More and more people sat down on Twitter: commented on each step.

The real triumph of Twitter occurred in 2007 at the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW). During the event, Twitter usage increased from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000. "People on Twitter deftly placed two 60-inch plasma panels in conference rooms exclusively for showing Twitter streaming messages," said Stephen Levy in Newsweek. “Hundreds of viewers followed each other through constant tweets.” The reaction at the festival was very positive. Blogger Scott Beale said Twitter is “absolutely rul”. Social software researcher Dana Boyd said Twitter has “mastered” the festival. Twitter Inc employees won the festival’s Web Award with the mark “We would like to thank you in 140 characters or less. And we just did it! ”

At this festival, Dorsey was awarded, and his brainchild was well-advertised. The service was gaining popularity. And after the 2007 event, (WWDC and MTV Music Awards), Twitter began to be talked about all over the world.

A huge number of people wanted to try Twitter in action. The developers were simply not ready for such an influx of people, so the service was operational only 98% of the time.

Twitter's growing popularity

The developers managed to completely get rid of technical problems only in 2008. For Twitter, 2008 was a decisive year. Service continued to grow, gain popularity, entered a phase of change. Twitter has new investors. And Twitter Inc, led by Jack Dorsey, split off from Obvious Corp.

Twitter has a lot of useful features - RSS - broadcast, chat, links to messages, etc. And the public interest with each only increased.

About 400,000 tweets / quarter were posted in 2007. This figure rose to 100 million tweets posted per quarter in 2008. By the end of 2009, 2. In February 2010, Twitter users posted 50 million tweets per day. In the first quarter of 2010, 4 billion .. tweets were posted. As of June 2010, some 65 million tweets were being sent every day, equivalent to about 750 tweets per second.

Twitter sets records during notable events. For example, during the 2010 World Cup, fans wrote 2,940 tweets per second during the Japan-Cameroon match on June 14, 2010. The record was broken again when 3085 tweets / sec. published after winning the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals June 17, 2010. On June 25, 2009, when American singer Michael Jackson died, users updated their status with the words “Michael Jackson” at a speed of 100,000 tweets per hour. On April 11, 2010, Twitter received an application developer, Atebits. Atebits has earned the Design Tweetie for Mac and Twitter Client Award. The application, now called “Twitter” and distributed free of charge, is the official Twitter client for iPhone.

According to the administration of the service as of September 2011, the number of registered Twitter users exceeded 200 million people. Moreover, in January, about 250 million people visited monthly, and in September - already 400 million, while about 100 million registered users visit the service at least once a month.

Twitter.com site update in 2010

September 14, 2010 Twitter Inc began redesigning the site, including an updated logo. On September 24, 2010, a new version of the site was launched, which allowed users to watch videos and photos directly on the site and, on the whole, enriched the user’s interaction with Twitter, making it faster, easier, more functional.

On October 4, 2010, Evan Williams announced that he was resigning as CEO. Dick Costolo, former chief operating officer of Twitter Inc., took over Williams' chair. But Williams stayed with the company to "be fully focused on the production strategy."

On August 4, 2011, the old interface was finally disabled and everyone who used it was transferred to a new one, launched back in 2010.

On December 8, 2011, a new interface for the web version and applications for smartphones on iOS and under the name Fly Twitter was launched.

In 2012, Twitter Inc acquired Dasient, a security developer for ad networks on the Internet.

Twitter service currently

Over the past year, the service has appeared many nice additions, such as a normal search. This constantly growing dotcom has already been tried to buy. Facebook was offering half a billion for Twitter with its stocks. But the management of the service refused this offer. The network is rumored that the company is negotiating the purchase of Twitter.

At the moment, Twitter is in third place in popularity among social networks. It will be overtaken only by Facebook and MySpace. Annual user growth is 1382%. This indicates the possibility of leading this top.

Twitter Ratings

According to Alexa Internet, Twitter is ranked as one of the 10 most visited websites around the world. The daily number of users is different in different studies, due to the fact that Twitter did not publish the number of active accounts. In February 2009, Compete.com identified Twitter as the third most frequently used social network with 6 million unique visitors per month and 55 million monthly visits.

In March 2009, Nielsen.com called Twitter "the fastest growing site." Twitter is growing by 1382% annually, increasing from 475 thousand unique visitors in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009 (followed by Zimbio with a 240% increase, and Facebook, with 228%). However, only 40% of Twitter users continue to use it after registration.

I will write out a whole scheme of how I make money on Twitter, and not just “you can earn there or there”), so be sure to subscribe to RSS and wait for a detailed bonus lesson. By the way, in the next lesson there will be a pleasant trifle and it will be available only to subscribers ().

Twitter Theory

Twitter  - this is a kind of “chat”. When I first learned about this service, for a long time I could not understand why it was needed, what was its interest. Since bye twitter in russian  language has not yet been launched, so you may have some difficulties, but together we will overcome them.

So, in this “chat” you see messages of people who are of interest to you, in turn, people who are of interest to you see your messages. Below is an example.

Let's say you are friends with Kolya and subscribe to him tape  (all his posts). Now, if Kolya writes, let's say “I want to go for a walk!” You will see this entry. If you write “Kolya, let's go for a walk!”, He will not see this message because he has not yet subscribed to your tape. And to see what you are writing he will have to subscribe to you.

You probably ask a question, but why you need twitter  and what does it have to do with my blog? The fact is that by subscribing to interesting people, you will learn a lot of useful and interesting things, in turn, you can periodically share links to articles on your blog that may interest readers of your feed and they can go to your blog, and these are additional readers. In turn, if they like the material, they can tell others about this article and so on in a chain that will attract tens, hundreds, and maybe thousands of new visitors to your blog.

A few words about twitter

Twitter: registration in Russian

So, let's go directly to the registration on Twitter.

About Twitter in Russian

Now I’ll talk about some of the concepts on twitter so that you can become a confident user on this service.

On the right you can see a panel that you will work with frequently. It looks like this:

  Let's take it apart.

following  - A figure that shows the number of people you follow. To subscribe to other users, you can find the right people in the search bar (Search - it is located just below). True, I have never used it before 🙂.

Usually, to subscribe to interesting people, while reading their blog, I click on a button like this (by the way, I advise you to try subscribe on me  , I write only useful things, share interesting links, with no spam and advertising), i.e. follow my next steps):

By clicking on the button above, you should be redirected to the next page:

By clicking on the Follow button (see above) you are subscribing to my feed. Try also click. As a result, you should get the following:

Now, to get back to the main page of your profile, you need to click on the Twitter logo or the Home button:

On your main page you will see my latest posts (the newer the post, the higher it is):

You may ask where you got the message from an unknown person in your stream (indicated in the image above by the number 1). It appeared because I did (I remind you that in our case you subscribed to me) (Retweet), i.e. quoted someone's post. The fact that this is a retweet is written where the second arrow stands. If you got out a small window (help), just click Close (arrow number 3).

We study Twitter further: suppose you are standing in the circle of your friends. Turning to someone, you say something like this: "Kolya, let's go for a walk." So on twitter, in the same way, if the message is addressed to someone, then it is customary to put a sign at the beginning of the message @ (dog). For example, if you want to write to me, you should do something like this: “@wpnew Thank you for the instructions on Twitter in Russian, I figured it out.”

But how do you see these messages that are addressed to you? To do this, just click on the button where it says @ your nickname:

As a result, you will see messages from other people from twitter who mentioned your name (or rather nickname):

You can retweet a message that has been sent to you (see the definition of a concept above) or reply to it. You can answer in two ways:

To see who and how many people have retweeted your message, you need to click on the Retweets button:

Then go to the Your Tweets, Retweeted tab.

Under arrow 1 is the number of people who retweeted this post.

Arrow number 2 shows the thumbnail of the person (avatar) who made the retweet (you can click on it to go to the page of this user). Naturally, if more than one person retweeted, then there will be many of these “small images”.

To go to twitter settings, click on the Settings button in the upper right corner:

In the tab that opens Account  You can change your time zone (Time Zone).

Next go to the tab Notices  and remove the checkmarks at all points (this is done so that any garbage does not come to you by e-mail):

  To save, click Save.

Now go to the Profile tab:

  1. Put an avatar (a picture that will be opposite your name) is required.
  2. The city can be entered as desired.
  3. It is also advisable to mention the address of your site (blog), if it is not there is nothing to worry about.
  4. The Bio rubric is required! Remember, the more information, the more confidence in you. The Bio section needs to be filled out briefly and so that people who read this entry immediately want to subscribe to you.
  5. Do not forget to save your actions.

Next tab Design

In this page you will control the appearance of your twitter page. You can choose the background pictures that the service offers us. But they, in my opinion, do not look very good. Below there is a button Change background image, clicking on it, you can upload your own image on the background.

You will see the changes after clicking on the save changes button.

Also, by clicking on the Change design colors button (in the same tab), you can change the color of text, links, sidebars, etc.

Generalization

  1. The number of remaining characters that will fit into your message.
  2. Fields for entering your message.
  3. The Tweet button, similar to the send button.
  4. The previous message, on Twitter they are called tweets. That is, under arrow 4, the last tweet is shown.
  5. How many hours ago the last tweet was posted.

Let's take a look at the following twitter section:

We will analyze the next section.

  1. Home - Twitter homepage.
  2. @ your_nick - View all posts mentioning your nickname.
  3. Direct Messages - Private messages (used VERY RARE).
  4. Favorites - Honestly, never used.
  5. Retweets - Page where you can look at retweets of other users; retweets made by you and retweet that made to your posts.
  6. Search - Search string.
  7. Lists, the name of the created group (the creation of the group is described above).

And finally, we’ll analyze another button. Having come to the page already to the people you have signed, you can see the following button:

  1. Mention - Write to this person.
  2. Unfollow - Unsubscribe (i.e. no longer see this person's posts).
  3. Block - Block (helps from spammers).
  4. Report for spam - Report Abuse (also against spammers).

Just a few words about twitter .. This is an analogue of the Retweet message from a person with the nickname wpnew.

If you have any difficulties, please ask in the comments. If necessary, I will supplement the lesson or change a little. It’s impossible to cover everything anyway.

In gratitude, I ask
