Apple watch 1st generation. Which Apple Watch to buy: a comparison of the characteristics of current models

Smartwatch Apple Watch The Series 2 boasts water resistance and a GPS transmitter, but the Watch Series 1 boasts an improved processor and a reduced price tag. Which model should you choose?

To begin with, let us explain that Apple decided to upgrade the first generation of their smart Apple watch Watch. The updated version is called the Apple Watch Series 1. In design and functions, it is no different from its original, but it costs much less and runs on a 2-core processor, like Series 2.

So does it make sense to overpay if Series 2 is essentially Series 1 with GPS and water resistance? Or maybe it's better to choose the first generation (it is sometimes also called Series 0)? Let's make a comparison.

Design and display

The new Apple Watch Series 2 is the same size as the first Apple Watch, but again with smaller and larger versions (38mm and 42mm). That being said, the Series 2 version with a ceramic case (pictured below) has tiny differences in thickness and length.

With Series 2 smartwatches, Apple once again opted for a square design, while many competitors, such as the Gear S3 or ZenWatch 3, have already come out with more traditional round dials. There is still a digital rotating crown on the side.
You can choose from Series 2 watches in aluminum, steel or new ceramic, which are Apple data 4 times stronger than steel. In steel and ceramic cases, the dial is covered with a sapphire crystal, and in the version with an aluminum case, ionized glass is used. By the way, it is lighter and 2.5 times stronger than sapphire (due to its flexibility), but less resistant to scratches, although it passes the test with coins and keys.
In the first generation Apple Watch, there is no choice - only a steel case with a sapphire crystal.

Series 1 and Series 2 smartwatches have nearly identical OLED Retina displays. As in the original, the Series 2 models have a resolution of 272x340 and 312x390 pixels (for versions 38 and 42 mm, respectively), with a density of about 326 ppi. The main difference is that Apple Watch Series 2 uses a 2nd generation display, which is 2 times brighter than the display of the first generation Apple Watch. That is, on the street, the image on the Series 2 screen is much better visible. In addition, in Series 2, the display is pressure sensitive (technology Force touch), which opens up even more possibilities for the user in working with applications.

The big advantage of the Series 2 smartwatch is its water resistance. They can withstand dives up to 50m. Apple has worked hard to ensure that you can swim without taking your watch off. Some even found it amusing to watch the Series 2 spit through the speaker if water did seep inside the cabinet. The drainage mechanism of the smartwatch works in this unusual way. Apple Watch Series 1 models have only modest splash protection.

Time autonomous work Series 1 and Series 2 are the same - about 18 hours. The charging principle and battery type are also the same in both generations.

Functions

The Apple Watch Series 2 smartwatch has an improved processor in the form of a new 2-core Apple S2 chip, which is 50% more efficient than the chip in the original Apple Watch. New graphics processor shows itself 2 times better in games and applications. Apple says up to 60 frames per second can be expected, depending on the game. The Apple Watch Series 1 also has a dual-core chip called the S1P.

Both series of watches support watchOS 3. Apple says that the new version of the OS has improved sports functions, added additional watch faces, it became possible handwriting messages. In an emergency using new function SOS can share your location with important contacts.

Series 2 and Series 1 contain the same set of sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor. However, the Series 2 also has GPS. Apple promises an "instant" satellite search, which is impressive given that most fitness trackers, including the Fitbit Surge and TomTom Spark Cardio + Music, take a minute or two to triangulate the signal. Built-in GPS lets you run without an iPhone in hand and get accurate distance, pace, route and more.

Specifications

There are different versions of Series 1 and Series 2 watches, but in this article we will only look at the characteristics of the standard top-end watches. Be sure to check the final characteristics of your device and check with the seller before buying.

Prices and conclusions

As well as original Apple Watch, Apple Watch Series 2 smartwatches are sold in two sizes - 38 and 42 mm. Along with the Nike + Special Edition, they can be purchased for as low as $ 369, while Series 1 prices start at $ 269.

With GPS, water resistance and an ultra-durable (ceramic version) case, the Apple Watch Series 2 is a highly anticipated iOS users passionate about sports. If you're not overly concerned about the sporting enhancements, then the Series 1 will likely be your favorite.

We all love this smartwatch Apple Watch, but even the most dedicated fans of this manufacturer are already confused about the difference between series 1, 2 and 3. If external differences practically not, and the first series is similar to the third, the most important changes are hidden inside. And the characteristics can differ significantly. Let's try to figure out what the difference is and which watch is right for you.

To clearly and clearly see what the difference is, we will create a table where we compare 1, 2 and 3 series in terms of characteristics. And then we will tell you about all the differences in more detail.

As we can see from the table, with each series, the watch became better, faster and smarter. If in the first hours there was not enough processor power and the clock could freeze, then in the second series they already made a dual-core processor.

External smart view Apple watch:

iWatch Series 1 was released in four colors (Silver, Gold, pink gold and gray space). 2 types of sizes - 38 and 42 mm. The body is made of aluminum.

Apple Watch Series 2 has become a little thicker (by almost a millimeter), the color scheme remains the same. But in this series, in addition to aluminum, stainless steel and ceramics are used. And also there was a sports series with a striking design - Nike + with special sports functions.

Watch Series 3. Same case with the same colors. Analogue of Watch 2 in design and color.

Apple watch display.

The first and the second and even the third series did not undergo significant differences in the display. All watch series use OLED technology. Screen brightness. In the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple Watch, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.

Water resistant.

Series 2 and 3 can be safely submerged in water to a depth of 50 meters and they will not have anything. In the third series, water training appeared, so you can safely go to the pool and set records in swims for 50 and 100 meters. But do not forget to click on the special drop icon to activate the water-resistant mode. After water procedures, the watch will push out excess water by itself. The very first model withstood only splashes and is afraid of immersion in water.

Processor and memory.

In the early hours, the main flaw was a rather weak processor, which was developed by Apple and dubbed the S1. This is a single core processor with a frequency of 520 Mhz. Its power is barely enough for applications and comfortable work... In the second and third series, this drawback was taken into account and a new dual-core processor was created, which was named S2. 512 MB RAM turned out to be enough for any tasks and applications, therefore, both in the first and in the second hours, the amount of RAM is the same. Due to new features and more resource-intensive applications in the third series, the memory capacity was increased to 768MB.

With GPS or not?

Apple Watch 1 is totally dependent on the iPhone and that's why they used the data from the smartphone. Apple equips second and third Watch GPS module- now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch. You can safely go for a walk and leave your phone at home. Running around with a smartphone is also inconvenient, which is why GPS is a very important improvement in series 2 and 3.

Battery in hours.

This is the main drawback of perhaps all watches and the Watch is no exception. Fit a large battery into small body does not seem possible. The battery life of the watch will only last for a day, and if you don't put it on charge before going to bed, then you can use the watch for a couple of hours at most the next day. In the second and third series, a slight increase in battery capacity is observed. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second and third generation of watches to work no less than the previous one, it was necessary to slightly increase the battery.

What's the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Apple recently unveiled its 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on. whole year and what has changed since Watch Series 2? This time we will do without a comparative table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches has also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means that we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Given the fact that the dimensions have remained practically unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So what's new in the 2017 Apple Watch 3?

Is there a LTE version now? this is the most important difference. True, it is absolutely useless for us - this function does not work in Russia yet, although telecom operators are already thinking about its implementation in Russia. The fact is that the watch uses a built-in SIM card - our operators do not yet provide such services and opportunities.

  1. Design element. By the way, the LTE version has one fundamental difference in terms of design - the scroll wheel is now with a red dot! Distinctive feature Watch Series 3 LTE - Red Scroll Wheel
  2. CPU. Of course, Apple Watch Series 3 got new processor S3 (which is claimed to be 70% faster than Series 2), and a dedicated wireless microchip - W2 (similar to AirPods).
  3. RAM. The RAM value has also grown to 768 MB (in the second generation it was 512 MB).
  4. Inner memory. For the version without LTE, nothing has changed, the size of the internal storage is still 8 GB. But Series 3 with a SIM card will receive an increased volume - 16 GB.
  5. Barometric altimeter. Now the clock can count how many floors you have climbed or descended.
  6. Bluetooth 4.2. The version of the "blue tooth" has become slightly higher (in Series 2 - Bluetooth 4.0). What is the plus? The data transfer rate increases. Considering that a lot of data is first downloaded to the iPhone, and then via Bluetooth to the Apple Watch, this will obviously not be superfluous. Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, promised battery life in 18 hours (with mixed use), etc. So which Watch should you choose - 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation?

Apple Watch Series 1 vs. Series 3.

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out - which watch to buy in 2017-2018?

There are far fewer versions of the Apple Watch than the iPhone, but choosing a watch is still not a trivial task. Series 4 or Series 3? Bigger or smaller? Or maybe save some money and take the good old Series 2? In fact, when Apple discontinued the previous generations, it became easier to choose.

Due to the lack of eSIM support in Russia, the watch line is further reduced: Apple Watch in a steel case is available only in a version with a cellular module, therefore it is not officially supplied. As a result, you only have to choose between Series 4 and Series 3.

Available on both generations of Apple Watch special versions Nike + watches. They have the same equipment as the regular ones. Apple Watch Nike + differs only in sports straps and exclusive dials for watch design.

Who should buy the Apple Watch Series 4

The latest generation of Apple Watch is worth buying for everyone who is not used to waste time on trifles. - this is undoubtedly a huge step forward. The watch stands out for its large and perfectly readable display, a thin case, as well as an advanced 64-bit processor and an abundance of new features such as tactile feedback from the wheel, ECG and fall detection.

The compact 40mm version is larger in screen size than the large 42mm models of previous generations. And if earlier big clock were considered masculine, and small ones were considered feminine, now such a division is no longer relevant. The Series 4 in a 40mm case can be confidently called universal, and the 44mm version is recommended only for fans of large watches.

Who should buy the Apple Watch Series 3

The Apple Watch's trump card is its price. The watch will cost almost 10,000 rubles less, making it an ideal option for those who want to save money. At the same time, the watch has all the necessary chips, including water resistance, GPS, altimeter, as well as a more powerful processor compared to previous generations and improved autonomy.

Apple Watch Series 3 in 38 mm case is suitable for owners of thin wrists, 42 mm - the choice for those who need a large watch and good screen readability. The former Apple recommends for wrists between 13 and 20 cm, the latter for wrists between 14 and 21 cm.

Detailed comparison of Apple Watch Series 4 and Apple Watch Series 3.

Apple Watch Series 4 is Apple's new smartwatch that has gotten serious updated design and many new features, including advanced heart rate sensors and an ECG module, which, alas, does not yet work in Russia. But how different are last year's Apple Watch Series 3? And which model should you choose? Our maximum detailed comparison smart watch answers these questions.

Display

And if it's short? The Series 4 display is immediately 32-35% larger than that of Series 3. It occupies almost the entire front surface, making the watch look fresh. The Series 4 display also supports LTPO technology to reduce power consumption.

The key difference between Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 3 is the display, which is why the comparison should start with the smartwatch screens. In the Apple Watch Series 4, Apple has dramatically increased the size of displays for the first time since the launch of its very first smartwatches. And she did this by reducing the frames around the perimeter, without a visible increase in the dimensions of the gadget.

Apple Watch Series 4 came out in two versions:

  • Apple Watch Series 4 40mm - 1.57-inch OLED display (368 x 448 pixels).
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44mm - 1.78-inch OLED display (324 x 394 pixels).

Apple Watch Series 3 released with smaller displays:

  • Apple Watch Series 4 38mm - 1.52-inch OLED display (312 x 390 pixels).
  • Apple Watch Series 4 42mm - 1.65-inch OLED display (270 x 340 pixels).

Looking at the increase, it might seem that the Apple Watch Series 4 displays are marginally larger than the Series 3. However, the increase was more than an impressive 32% for the 40mm model and 35% for the 44mm version. For such a compact device, this is a decent growth, which is clearly shown by comparing the display area:

Series 4

  • Apple Watch Series 4 40mm - 759 sq. mm.
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44mm - 977 sq. mm.

Series 3

  • Apple Watch Series 3 38mm - 563 sq. mm.
  • Apple Watch Series 3 42mm - 740 sq. mm.

The resolution of Apple Watch Series 4 screens has increased in direct proportion to the size. The increased resolution on Apple Watch Series 4 will improve readability with larger app icons and fonts.

The display in Apple Watch Series 4 has become not only larger, but also received support for LTPO technology, which is responsible for increasing energy efficiency. However, already in the section "Battery and runtime" it will become clear that this improvement was simply necessary for the Apple Watch Series 4.

Other key features of the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 3 displays are identical. Screens of both models are of Retina type, highest brightness up to 1000 cd / m2, safety glass Ruggedized Ion-X and support for Force Touch.

Design

And if it's short? The display influenced the design of the Apple Watch Series 4 the most, but there are other changes as well. Series 4 is slightly larger than Series 3, but thinner. Rear panel The Series 4 case is made of ceramic and sapphire crystal for improved call quality.

Increased Apple display Watch Series 4 has had the biggest impact on smartwatches. The full bezel display looks much better than a display with thick bezels around the perimeter, like the Series 3. Adds the "infinity" effect of the classic design Apple decision- the edges of the display have a special bend that follows the shape of the case.

But beyond that, the Apple Watch Series 4 has a few design enhancements. The watch has become a little larger, but thinner:

Dimensions Apple Watch Series 4

  • Apple Watch Series 4 40mm - 40 x 34 x 10.7mm
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44mm - 44 × 38 × 10.7mm.

Dimensions Apple Watch Series 3

  • Apple Watch 38mm Series 4 - 38.6 x 33.3 x 11.4mm
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44mm - 42.5 x 36.4 x 11.4mm.

The thickness decreased immediately by 0.7 mm. Note again that for a compact device, such a change is quite tangible.

In addition, Apple Watch Series 4 has become heavier. The 40 mm model weighs 30.1 g, the 44 mm 36.7 g. The Apple Watch Series 3 has the following: Series 3 38 mm - 26.7 g, Series 3 42 mm - 32.3 g.

The back of the Apple Watch Series 4 case is made of ceramic and sapphire crystal. The use of new materials added strength to the watch and made it easier to pass the signal. Apple Watch Series 3 rear part the body is made of composite.

It is important to emphasize here that despite the change in all dimensions, straps from any previous Apple smart watch models are suitable for Apple Watch Series 4.

Apple Watch Series 4 differ from Series 3 in a large number available colors housing. Series are available in aluminum and stainless steel casing (not sold in Russia). The aluminum model comes in three colors: silver, gold and space gray. The steel version is also available in three colors: silver, gold and black.

Apple Watch Series 3 is available in Silver and Space Gray only. Apple has stopped releasing the gold version of the Series 3, although it originally had this option.

Digital Crown Wheel

And if it's short? The Digital Crown in Apple Watch Series 4 has been completely redesigned. It has become 30% thinner and more compact. The Digital Crown has received support from the Taptic Engine for a very tactile user experience.

A very important, but at first glance, not very noticeable change in the Apple Watch Series 4 has occurred in the Digital Crown. Apple has completely redesigned the Digital Crown for the first time since the launch of the first smartwatch. The company rebuilt it from scratch using more non-mechanical parts. The wheel has become thinner and more compact at once by 30%.

But the key feature of the new Digital Crown is support for the Taptic Engine. In Apple Watch Series 4, each wheel interaction produces a pleasant tactile response, similar to vibration. IPhone users 6s and newer iPhones will know exactly what the feeling is. The Apple Watch Series 3 did not have this.

Performance

And if it's short? Apple Watch Series 4 has an S4 chip, which is immediately 50% faster than the S3 chip in Series 3. The second-generation gyroscope and accelerometer better measure activity and allow the watch to understand if a person suddenly falls, followed by a call to the rescue service. Series 4 have new wireless module W3 and 16 GB of internal memory instead of the previous 8 GB.

Apple Watch Series 4 is powered by a dual-core 64-bit Apple S4 processor. The new chip is up to 50% faster than the S3 processor found in Apple Watch Series 3. Completing any task on the new Apple smartwatch will be noticeably faster than on last year's model. In particular, applications will start running instantly.

Apple Watch Series 4 features a second-generation accelerometer and gyroscope. The accelerometer can measure overloads up to 32g, whereas the module in Series 3 was only able to measure overloads up to 16g. The updated sensors also increased the accuracy of tracking physical activity and allowed the watch to support the fall detection function. Thanks to her, the Apple Watch Series 4 will be determined if the user suddenly felt sick and fell. If this happens, the watch will call the rescue service within 10 seconds and send a warning text message relatives (must be indicated in the Health application as contacts in case of emergency).

Apple also equipped the Apple Watch Series 4 with the new W3 wireless chip. Apple Watch Series 3 uses the previous W2 chip, which is slower and less stable.

Apple Watch Series 4 has 16GB of internal storage. Apple Watch Series 3 has 8 GB. Other characteristics of the watch are identical. Both models have a barometric barometer, ambient light sensor and support GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS.

Water resistant

And if it's short? The models are identical - both can be submerged in water to a depth of 50 meters.

Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 4 are equally protected against water ingress by ISO 22810: 2010. The watch can be immersed to a depth of 50 meters, both in the pool and in the river or sea.

Biometric sensors

And if it's short? The Apple Watch Series 4 has an ECG sensor that measures in 30 seconds (it does not work in Russia yet). In addition, Series 4 is equipped with second generation heart rate and heart rate sensors. They monitor the rhythm of the heart constantly and can prevent diseases at an early stage.

By far, the main innovation of the Apple Watch Series 4 is the ECG sensor built right into wheel Digital Crown. To perform electrocardiography, users only need to run special application and place your finger on the Digital Crown. The procedure takes only 30 seconds, and its accuracy is close to maximum. Apple Watch Series 3 didn't have this option.

Unfortunately, at the time of the launch of the Apple Watch Series 4, the ECG sensor will only work in the US. The problem is that Apple needs to get permission to activate such a complex module in other countries. The company has already begun to take the first steps in this direction in Russia, so it should be expected that soon the ECG sensor will also work in our country.

Equally important improvements have been made to the heart rate and heart rate sensors. First, there is a brand new electrical heart rate sensor at the bottom of the Apple Watch Series 4 case. And secondly, the watch received a second generation optical heart rate sensor.

Together, these sensors not only more accurately determine the heart rate. They are constantly in automatic mode monitor heart rate and heart rate, alerting the user if the heart rate is too high or low.

Dials

And if it's short? Apple Watch Series 4 has a host of new watch faces that can accommodate as many as 8 extensions.

For the Apple Watch Series 4 with its large display, Apple has created several new watch faces that won't be available on previous models, including Series 3. Main feature new dials is the ability to install on them up to eight extensions of various functions or applications. A striking example of one of these dials is the "Infograph", which shows the user the maximum amount of useful information.

The extensions themselves have been updated as well. They have become larger and provide more useful information.

Also, several new exclusive dials "Steam", "Liquid Metal", "Fire" and "Water" are made to emphasize the large display. Pressing on the edges of these dials produces various beautiful effects.

Battery and run time

And if it's short? Autonomous time Apple work Watch Series 4 and Series 3 are the same - up to 18 hours in normal use.

Apple Watch Series 4 battery life is unchanged from Series 3. Both watches last up to 18 hours in daily use. As we noted at the very beginning, the use of a more energy efficient display became mandatory for the Series 4, since otherwise the gadget would have sagged in autonomy.

Communication and sound

And if it's short? Apple Watch Series 4 now has Bluetooth 5.0 support. The watch speaker is 50% louder, and the microphone has shifted for clearer sound on calls.

Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 3 support the same Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n (2.4 GHz) standards. But the Bluetooth support in the new watch has improved. Series 4 support Bluetooth 5.0, while Series 3 only support Bluetooth 4.2.

The speaker in Apple Watch Series 4 is 50% louder than in Series 3. The microphone on the new watch has been relocated to improve sound quality and reduce echo during conversations.

Prices

And if it's short? Apple Watch Series 4 is almost 10 thousand rubles more expensive than Series 3.

Apple Watch Series 4 with an aluminum case is sold in Russia at the following prices:

  • Apple Watch Series 4 40 mm - 31,990 rubles.
  • Apple Watch Series 4 44 mm - 33,990 rubles.

Unfortunately, Apple has decided not to sell the Apple Watch Series 4 with a stainless steel case in Russia. In addition, models of smart watches with support for a SIM card have not reached us again. The latter happened due to the fact that eSIM cards are not supported in Russia.

Apple Watch Series 3 are rated as follows:

  • Apple Watch Series 3 38 mm - 22,990 rubles.
  • Apple Watch Series 3 38 mm - 24,990 rubles.

As you can see, the difference with Apple Watch Series 4 is almost 10 thousand rubles. And it's important to note that Apple prices Watch Series 4 in comparison with Series 3 has increased all over the world, but not only in Russia.

The new version of the most popular smartwatches

With the release of the new iPhone, Apple hasn't forgotten to update its smartwatch. The product has received many improvements, the main ones being water resistance and special modes for swimming, built-in GPS, a new Apple S2 SoC and a brighter screen. In addition, Apple Watch Series 2 (this is the official name of the novelty) is running a new version of the watchOS 3 operating system (but owners of last year's model can also download it). How strongly did the described innovations affect the consumer qualities of the product? We will talk about this in our article.

Before we jump directly into the watch story, let's take a look at Apple's rather confusing line of smartwatches. The fact is that Apple not only released the Apple Watch Series 2, but also replaced the first generation with the Apple Watch Series 1, which retains the previous case and lacks GPS, but is equipped with the same Apple S2 processor as the Apple Watch Series 2.

Thus, in addition to the differences in display size (38 and 42 mm) and body material (aluminum or stainless steel), there are now two generations (Series 1 and Series 2), simultaneously presented to the markets. And this is not counting the "real" first generation of watches, with the Apple S1 processor: such models can no longer be bought in the official Apple Store, but they will certainly be presented for a long time from dealers who have kept old stocks.

On top of that, Apple changed the name of the series within a generation. The aluminum version, formerly called the Apple Watch Sport, is now just an Apple Watch, just like the stainless steel version. Just when buying on the website, you indicate the material of the case. In turn, the elite Apple Watch Edition has been preserved, but instead of the gold models, it now features a new ceramic one, at a price several times lower.

And besides this there is also Apple series Watch Hermes and Apple Watch Nike +, featuring straps and box designs, and a huge variety of straps that can be purchased with the watch or separately (excluding Nike straps). Moreover, Hermes straps are now also available for purchase without watches.

In general, the devil will break his leg :) On the other hand, the possibilities of combining technical characteristics, case design and straps are now almost endless. With first-generation Apple Watch band compatibility retained, you can attach your old band to any watch. Therefore, if you need "the same blouse, but with mother-of-pearl buttons" - this is not a problem.

Since the site is still a site about technologies, not style, we made a table in which we entered only technical characteristics, leaving out the case materials and straps outside the brackets (we will talk about them in the "Design" section later.

Apple has not released details on the S2 and S1P SoCs. Even the frequency of the CPU cores is not reported. It is only known that in both cases there are two of them. The overall performance of the CPU + GPU has also doubled (according to Apple). We cannot verify this, and, apparently, the full difference can be felt after the next version of watchOS is released. We assume that on the very first Apple Watch it will slow down (or even be incompatible with them). But watchOS 3.0 works fine on the Apple S1. So, I suppose, this is a groundwork for the future.

We have already written about the other differences above. But I would like to draw your attention to one more detail. Based on the fact that the dimensions of the first generation Apple Watch and Apple Watch Series 1 are completely identical, we can conclude that the watch case is the same. To be precise, we are talking about Apple Watch sport and Apple Watch Series 1. But Apple Watch Series 2 is thicker previous versions almost a millimeter. This is essential.

Well, let's take a look at the Apple Watch Series 2 and see how it differs from the first version of the watch.

Equipment

The packaging of the aluminum version of the Apple Watch Series 2 looks very similar to the box of the first generation Apple Watch Sport. This is an elongated box made of thick cardboard.

But inside there is no longer a case made of white plastic, but just a niche for a watch. To be honest, it seems to us less interesting decision(however, this does not affect the reliability of transportation).

The package contents of the new items are identical to those in the Apple Watch Sport. The only difference is that now you can choose between a nylon and silicone strap when buying (the price is the same). And if you choose nylon, then be prepared for only one size in the kit, while buyers of a silicone strap get two options at once. As a consequence, the nylon strap may not be very suitable for those with large hands.

To charge the watch, wireless charging is used, which in appearance resembles a large tablet. It is connected with a USB cable to a 5 V 1 A charging unit. That is, instead of the complete unit, you can use any smartphone charger.

An important point: Charger from the first generation Apple Watch is fully compatible with Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 1. Therefore, accessories such as the convenient docking station will work as well.

Design

The appearance of the novelty is almost the same as its predecessor. It is the same rectangular case with rounded corners and edges, and two buttons on the right side.

One of these buttons is oblong, the other is round, at the same time acting as a wheel that can be turned (Digital Crown). The screen size remains the same. We had a 42 mm version, and a 38 mm version is also available for sale.

On the back we see a heart rate sensor, buttons for detaching the strap. And here it is worth pointing out one caveat: if earlier in the aluminum version of the watch (Apple Watch Sport) plastic was used in the round zone around the sensor, and ceramic material was used only in the Apple Watch made of stainless steel, now in all versions of the Apple Watch Series 2 - from the cheapest to the most expensive - this zone is ceramic.

Another difference is two microphone holes instead of one. The speaker hole has not changed.

As we said, the new product has become a little thicker. This is, in principle, noticeable in direct comparison, but if you just start wearing Apple Watch Series 2, then you will not feel any discomfort. They look no worse on the hand than the first generation model.

It can be assumed that the thickening is due to the need to install a more capacious battery in order to keep the battery life at the same level with the increased screen brightness and SoC performance. Another assumption is related to the key innovations of the Apple Watch Series 2: the appearance of full water resistance (5 ATM) and the presence of built-in GPS. Obviously, both of these features should have influenced the engineering features of the device. And the fact that at the same time it was possible to preserve the previous design and practically did not change the dimensions (except for the thickness) is a real victory.

Why is it important to maintain dimensions (length-width)? Because, in addition to the aesthetic aspects, compatibility with the released straps depends on it. Considering that some of these straps are more expensive than the watch itself (for example, a steel block bracelet), it would simply be unfair to the people who bought them to change the strap attachment in the new generation of watches.

At the same time, Apple continues to expand its range of straps. Firstly, due to new colors (in the photo above, you see a nylon asphalt gray strap and a dark gray silicone strap with a brown tint), and secondly, due to the development of cooperation programs. In addition to Hermes, Apple has entered into a similar partnership with Nike. The silicone straps on the Apple Watch Nike + series feature large openings to ensure comfort during active sports, and a two-tone surface (with Nike branded colors).

True, Nike straps are only available with watches so far.

Screen

Size and resolution Apple screen The Watch Series 2 has not changed from the first generation. The watch is available in two display sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm. Accordingly, their resolution also differs: 272 × 340 and 312 × 390, respectively. We had a watch with a screen diagonal of 42 mm and a screen resolution of 312 × 390.

We have carried out a detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments. Below - the conclusion of the editor of the section "Projectors and TV" Alexei Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a scratch-resistant glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface curved to the edges. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, slightly better than that of Google Nexus 7 (2013)), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of regular glass. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly better than that of google screen Nexus 7 2013. For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens:

The screen of the Apple Watch Series 2 is slightly darker (the brightness in the photos is 111 versus 115 for the Nexus 7). There is no doubling of reflection, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. When the white field was displayed on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value recorded by us was about 660 cd / m², the minimum - 15 cd / m². Always works automatic adjustment brightness by light sensor. The user can only make adjustments to the operation of this function by choosing one of three levels. When the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness rises, but it decreases only when changing from a very bright external light to, for example, lighting conditions artificial light office. When switching from the last option to darkness, the brightness of the watch screen decreases after a cycle of switching to standby mode and activating the device. In general, the range of brightness change and excellent anti-glare properties allow using the device both on a summer day outdoors and in complete darkness - even after adapting the eyes, the watch screen will not seem excessively bright. At any brightness level, there is modulation with a frequency of 60 Hz, but its amplitude is small, so flickering is not visible. The graphs of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) illustrate the above:

This screen uses AMOLED matrix- active matrix on organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B) in equal numbers, which is confirmed by a fragment of a micrograph:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The spectra are typical for OLED - the areas of primary colors are well separated and appear as relatively narrow peaks:

However, there is also cross-mixing of components ( programmatically), so the coverage is not overly wide, but adjusted to the sRGB borders:

Accordingly, the images on the screen of the Apple Watch have natural saturation. The color temperature of the white and gray field is approximately 7000 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of an absolutely black body (ΔE) is 2-3 units. The color balance is good. Black is just black at all angles. It is so black that the contrast setting in in this case not applicable. When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. The screen has excellent viewing angles with much less brightness drop when looking at the screen from an angle compared to LCD screens, but at larger angles, white is noticeably bluish. Overall, the screen quality of the Apple Watch Series 2 is very high.

watchOS 3 and what's new

Along with the new watch, Apple released an update to the watchOS operating system. The third version is already fully compatible with the previous ones. Apple models Watch. I must say, there is nothing radically new here, but some pleasant improvements have appeared. The main one is the Dock (in the Russian interface it is also called in English), from which it is convenient to launch applications. Previously, applications were launched only from the main menu, and this was very inconvenient, because round icons- quite miniature, and getting into them the first time was problematic. Now we will need the main application menu much less often, because frequently used applications can be launched directly from the Dock.

Dock is invoked by a short press on the oblong button. I must say that this decision is very correct, because before this button was practically never used at all (it was assigned a completely unnecessary one in Everyday life function). So in the Dock you see thumbnails open applications... And some of them are pinned to the Dock, and some were just recently opened. Accordingly, you can pin those that are not pinned to the Dock if you are going to access them often, and if you don’t need some of the pinned ones, they can be easily removed.

We add to this that if you press the oblong button with a long press, a menu will open with options to turn off the clock and emergency call(see screenshot on top right). The latter is an important feature (although, hopefully, none of the readers will need it). In addition, the menu has been redesigned quick settings(called up by swiping up from the bottom of the screen; see the screenshot at the top left). There is now a droplet icon to indicate the screen will lock when used in water. Of course, this option is only available on Apple Watch Series 2.

Other innovations include new dials (including a dynamic dial with jellyfish and cartoon Minnie Mouse in addition to the already existing Mickey Mouse), as well as easier switching between them. To change the dial, just slide your finger from the left edge of the screen to the right. This is useful because different watch faces can be useful in different situations. For example, if you are at home, then you are more comfortable with one option, and if you go for a run, then you need a dial with a display of activities.

In addition, do not forget that a number of dials are modular, that is, we can ourselves determine which information and where will be displayed on them. Therefore, if you wish, you can very finely adjust the dials directly for yourself.

Fitness opportunities

But the main thing to note about the Apple Watch Series 2 and watchOS 3 is, of course, the vastly expanded fitness capabilities. Let's start with the less important one. Among preinstalled apps two new ones appeared. One contains breathing exercises, and the other measures the pulse.

Deep breaths for a minute help us to make the flower circle icon, which gradually increases during inhalation. At the same time, the feedback of the watch is also involved during the exercise, and this gives a very interesting feeling - as if we are filling some old bellows and they creak. Of course, there are plenty of such simple utilities in the App Store, but it is this detail with the Taptic Engine that makes the Apple app special.

As for measuring the heart rate, everything is very primitive here, but it's better this way than nothing at all. True, you can get detailed statistics about your heart rate for the day by opening the Health app on your iPhone (information about all heart rate measurements on the watch is exported there).

In general, it cannot be said that the two new applications significantly expand Apple capabilities Watch. But the new training regimes are really valuable. Thanks to the advent of water resistance, the watch can now be used for swimming. Moreover, there is a separate mode for swimming in the pool and in open water. We could not check the second one for obvious reasons, but, apparently, GPS is turned on there. But when swimming in a pool, GPS does not work, but other sensors collect all the basic information, including, for example, the number of strokes.

Post-workout details can be viewed on iPhone in the Activity app.

By the way, when you start the swim, the watch locks the screen and buttons, and to unlock you need to turn the Digital Crown or press both buttons simultaneously (the same action takes a screenshot, but in watchOS 3 screenshots are disabled by default, you can enable it through the smartphone application) ...

Now let's see how the advent of GPS can help us. To do this, turn on the training mode, which involves movement in the open air. For example, it could be walking or running. In theory, everything should be simple: you move around, the watch builds a track and, when connected to an iPhone, sends information there. In practice, it turned out that this function does not work very smoothly - until you do the calibration. Here is an example of walking results.

Well, first of all, it would be better to call “average pace” the average speed and indicate it in kilometers / hour. This is a parameter understandable to everyone, in contrast to the time for one kilometer. Secondly, by no clear reason Apple Watch didn't build the track. This can be seen in the screenshot from the smartphone (see on the left under this paragraph). Nearby is a screenshot of a run, and the distance is the same (relatively speaking, we walked in one direction with a brisk step, and backward - with a run).

As you can see, there is already a track here, but there is no pulse. It can be assumed that the watch did not fit very tightly to the hand, but we did not move it after the way there. That is, apparently, in the mode of more active shaking, the watch loses its pulse. Another oddity: in the first case, the distance is defined as 0.38 km, and in the second - 0.33 km (although, again, this is the same route). The error at 50 meters, at first glance, is not so critical, but still it is clearly more than acceptable for a device with GPS. Now let's look at the track itself.

I must say right away that it has nothing to do with reality. The author did not cross any highway, shopping center is located in a completely different place than shown on the map ... But the main thing is that the path itself was completely different. He was not at all straightforward.

To understand the problem, you need to divide it into its components. There are two of them here: inaccurate Apple maps (with this, alas, we can not do anything) and incorrectly working GPS. The latter, as it turned out, is "treated" by calibration. Apple's website has one that explains how to calibrate GPS. After doing this Apple instructions Watch Series 2 began to build the track absolutely correctly, even in difficult conditions (for example, if you enter a room on your way). Below are screenshots proving this.

A separate topic beyond the scope of this article is the use of third-party applications that use GPS on the Apple Watch Series 2.

Autonomous work

It is impossible to test the battery life of the watch with any certainty, and it must be understood that the 18 hours indicated by Apple is a very approximate value. But as a result everyday use we got the impression that the Apple Watch Series 2 lasts the same as the first generation Apple Watch: about two days. We are talking about models with a 42 mm screen (38 mm models work less).

The intensity of use is moderate: receiving notifications, half an hour workout in the pool, five minutes walking / jogging (with building a track), one answer to a call using a microphone and speaker, a dynamic screen. In this mode, the watch can be charged overnight. But, of course, it is worth slightly increasing the duration of using GPS - and the situation will change for the worse. In addition, the weather can affect the result. On a sunny day, if you stay outdoors for a long time, the watch will probably run out faster, as the screen brightness will automatically rise higher than during cloudy times and when used indoors.

conclusions

Apple made important step towards sports gadgets. Now Apple Watch can not only measure heart rate and count steps, but also track swimming results and build a track during outdoor activities. True, they do both of them worse than specialized devices (like Garmin fitness watches). In particular, swimming information is less detailed, and the track is built correctly only when calibrated and only on Apple maps (very imperfect). But we have no doubt that Apple will refine these features. In addition, there are likely to be third-party apps in the App Store that can do all the same things, but better. After all, the main thing is that the hardware of the Apple Watch Series 2 is practically in no way inferior to a sports GPS watch. And software revision is a matter of time.

However, in terms of software, the situation as a whole is now much better than it was before. First of all, we are talking about innovations in watchOS 3. The appearance of the Dock and the ability to finally use the oblong button for really useful things are very positive developments. By the way, unlocking the screen while swimming by turning the Digital Crown is also a great find, because before, you practically never had to use the Digital Crown as a wheel. Another great innovation is the convenient dial change. It would seem a trifle, but such a trifle allows a wider and more productive use of the watch. You’ll think ten times before, do you need to change right now? installed dial... Now you can have several dials for different situations and instantly (even on the go) switch between them.

Of course, one can complain that the appearance of the Apple Watch has not improved compared to the first generation. But here Apple is following the same path as with the iPhone / iPad: one update expands functionality, almost without affecting the appearance, the next update changes the face of the device. It must be assumed that indeed new design we'll see in Apple Watch Series 3. Hopefully, Apple will retain compatibility with older bands as it does now. From point of view fashion accessory it is very important.

So, the big question is: Is it worth the Apple Watch Series 2 upgrade for those with a first-generation watch? The answer is simple: if you don’t swim in the pool (or it’s not important for you to keep track of your swims), then you can safely wait another year. You get all the benefits of watchOS 3 on last year's model. And we would not recommend buying a new watch for the sake of the built-in GPS, since there are still complaints about building a track.

A more difficult question is what to choose: Series 1 or Series 2. The difference in price between models of identical sizes and materials is 9,000 rubles. In our opinion, it all depends on how important a sports application is to you and whether you plan to deal with third-party software (for example, look for applications for swimming and building a track). If the answer to both questions is “no”, and you were going to buy a model made of aluminum and with a silicone strap, then you should save some money and take Series 1. Otherwise, as well as if you want to take a watch made of stainless steel and with a sapphire crystal, the choice is obvious: Apple Watch Series 2.

Apple Watch Series 2 deserves our Original Design award for significantly expanding functionality (water resistance, GPS) while maintaining design.
