Your own Xmarks. Setting up the Xmarks add-on in the Google Chrome browser

Sometimes xmark.exe and other system errors EXE errors may be related to problems in the Windows registry. Several programs can use the xmark.exe file, but when those programs are uninstalled or modified, sometimes "orphaned" (incorrect) EXE registry entries are left behind.

Basically, this means that while the actual path of the file may have changed, its incorrect former location is still recorded in the Windows Registry. When Windows tries to look up these incorrect file references (file locations on your PC), xmark.exe errors can occur. Additionally, a malware infection may have corrupted registry entries associated with Internet Utilities 3000 Pro Edition. Thus, these corrupt EXE registry entries need to be fixed to fix the problem at the root.

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid xmark.exe keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Mistakes made when editing the registry can render your PC inoperable and cause irreparable damage to your operating system. In fact, even one comma placed in the wrong place can prevent your computer from booting!

Because of this risk, we highly recommend using a trusted registry cleaner such as %%product%% (Developed by Microsoft Gold Certified Partner) to scan and repair any xmark.exe-related registry problems. Using a registry cleaner, you can automate the process of finding corrupted registry entries, missing file references (like the one causing the xmark.exe error), and broken links within the registry. Before each scan, a backup copy is automatically created, allowing you to undo any changes with one click and protecting you from possible damage to your computer. The best part is that eliminating registry errors can dramatically improve system speed and performance.

Warning: Unless you are an experienced PC user, we DO NOT recommend manually editing the Windows Registry. Using Registry Editor incorrectly may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from misuse Registry Editor can be eliminated. You use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Before you manually repair the Windows registry, you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry associated with xmark.exe (eg. Internet Utilities 3000 Pro Edition):

  1. Click on the button Begin.
  2. Enter " command" V search bar... DON'T CLICK YET ENTER!
  3. While holding down the keys CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, press ENTER.
  4. A dialog box for access will be displayed.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. The black box opens with a blinking cursor.
  7. Enter " regedit" and press ENTER.
  8. In the Registry Editor, select the xmark.exe-related key (eg. Internet Utilities 3000 Pro Edition) you want to back up.
  9. On the menu File select Export.
  10. On the list Save to select the folder where you want to save the backup Internet key Utilities 3000 Pro Edition.
  11. In field File name Enter a name for the backup file, for example "Internet Utilities 3000 Pro Edition backup".
  12. Make sure the field Export range value selected Selected branch.
  13. Click Save.
  14. The file will be saved with extension .reg.
  15. You now have a backup of your xmark.exe-related registry entry.

The following steps for manually editing the registry will not be described in this article, as they are likely to damage your system. If you want to receive more information about manually editing the registry, please see the links below.

In order to start synchronizing data, you need to register on the site and install a special plugin that works only with Firefox 3. After installing the “addon”, a window will appear inviting you to configure its operation. In it you can specify the parameters for accessing your account on Xmarks, after which the service will synchronize with the default settings - it will place the contents of the user’s browser bookmarks on the pages of the Xmarks service.

A button to launch the Xmarks plugin will appear in the browser status bar, with which you can force data synchronization and set plugin operating parameters. For example, by default only bookmarks will be synchronized, but you can set passwords to be synchronized at the same time.

After installing the plugin and synchronizing it with the online collection of links, sites added to bookmarks will begin to appear in Google search results:

On the service itself, the user’s bookmarks are available on the My Xmarks page. You can view your bookmarks there by selecting advanced viewing options, such as Preview. You can also describe the link in more detail on Xmarks pages by using the Details button. At any time, bookmarks can be made available to other users using the Share button.

In addition to the synchronization functions itself, the Xmarks service allows you to receive detailed information about the site and a list of sites similar to the one you are viewing. By clicking on this button that appears in address bar site, you will open an additional window that will indicate the number of users who have added the site to bookmarks, tags, and several similar sites.

Synchronization of browser data is implemented by developers in the Opera 9 browser using an online service. Other synchronization services are not tied to the content of the browser and provide synchronization of the specified data.

Details Created: 01/09/11 Updated: 05/06/18

Type - free password manager, browser bookmarks.

I have been using this bookmark manager since August 2008 (Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer). At first it was called FoXmarks, then it was renamed Xmarks password manager. Now their official website displays the LastPass logo.

As of this writing, Xmarks Password Manager is available for four browsers. A complete list of compatibility and comparison of functionality is given in the table below (data as of 01/09/2011). On May 01, 2018 the service was closed.

Sync with iPhone

Personal synchronization server

As you can see, Xmarks turned out to be the most functional for the Firefox browser. 9 out of 10 supported features. Not surprising. Firefox is a pretty good browser. Popular and its code is “open”. As for the 10th function (Synchronization with iPhone), then you can understand Apple, the manufacturer of the iPhone, Mac OS and Safari. However, I believe that this table will grow both in length (in functionality) and in width (in support of browsers and platforms). When I started using the Xmarks Firefox password manager (then FoXmarks), Internet Explorer support, functions Sync open tabs And History synchronization hasn't happened yet. So there's still more to come. Now I would like to look at the Xmarks functions that exist today.

If Xmarks does not support the browser you use, or for some reason you do not like it, then you can use another free bookmark manager, such as Firefox Sync, Opera Link or LastPass.

Bookmark synchronization. The name of the function speaks for itself. This is basic for programs of this class. Using this function, you can synchronize bookmarks between all (subject to support) of your browsers.

Backup and recovery. Using this function, you will not only be able to synchronize with the current data on the server, but also, if necessary, return to a backup copy of previous sets of bookmarks. Reservation occurs automatically. I’ll show you how it looks using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (Xmarks 3.9.2 bookmark manager) as an example.

Access bookmarks from the web interface. When installing Xmarks Firefox for the first time, you will be prompted to register on the site and get an account. In the future (regardless of the browser and operating system), you will be able to go to the Xmarks website, enter your username and password and gain access to your bookmarks in the form of a directory tree displayed on the web page. This is shown in Mozilla Firefox as an example.

Secure password synchronization. In addition to bookmark synchronization, it is possible to synchronize logins/passwords. Moreover, the synchronization of this data will occur in encrypted form. This increases the security of your credentials. I’ll show you how it looks using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (Xmarks 3.9.2 bookmark manager) as an example.

Sync open tabs. This function Allows you to synchronize open tabs. Let's say that before working on your home computer you found very useful and important information for your company. You have opened several tabs (from different sites) that display the information you need, but you see that it’s time to run to work. Of course, you can save all the necessary tabs as bookmarks. Or you can simply close the browser (synchronization will take place automatically), come to work and continue from the same place. I’ll show you how it looks using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (Xmarks 3.9.2 bookmark manager) as an example.

History synchronization. If you have not disabled the function of remembering the history of your “surfing” on the Internet in your browser settings, then Xmarks Firefox can synchronize it too. This can be quite useful. Let's say that at work you are given a task to find something on the Internet. For example, information about a competing company. And you remember that somewhere the day before yesterday at home you just saw the necessary information. You start searching... But, as luck would have it, nothing is found. This is where the history of visited websites on your home computer would come in handy. I’ll show you how it looks using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (Xmarks 3.9.2 bookmark manager) as an example.

Synchronization profiles. Allows you to create different profiles for synchronization. For example: “Home”, “Work”, “Study”... This will be useful when you do not want your bookmarks of sites that you visit at home on the weekend to end up on your work computer on the corporate network. I’ll show you how this looks like using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (free password manager Xmarks 3.9.2).

Synchronization with iPhone. Sync your data with your personal iPhone.

Personal synchronization server. This function will be useful for companies that do not trust their employee data to third-party companies. Using this function you can organize own server Xmarks Chrome sync. This will require time and material costs for the enterprise, as well as the presence of a qualified employee who will set up and maintain such a server.

What does it look like?

And now, using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 (free password manager Xmarks 3.9.2) as an example, I’ll show you what some of the above functions look like from a user’s point of view.

Installation process. The image below shows the login to Xmarks Password Manager.

When registering, enter your existing email address to which you have access. When choosing a password, follow the guidelines for creating a secure password.

After the installation, registration and first synchronization procedure, you can open the settings window. Any user can set up the Xmarks password manager.

On the first tab Status displays the status and date/time of the last synchronization (as well as a button to start synchronization), account data, a button to log out of your account and a button to start the installation wizard, which will help you create new account or restore the password to an existing one.

On the tab Data types, Xmarks bookmark manager, in the area Synchronization and backup, You can: specify what types of data should be backed up (bookmarks, logs, passwords, open tabs), set a PIN code to encrypt your passwords, remove passwords from the synchronization server, specify the name of the computer from which synchronization occurs. In area Synchronization You can enable/disable automatic synchronization (I recommend enabling it). Also indicate whether data should be synchronized when closing and whether you need to be asked about this. I recommend checking the box next to Synchronize when closing and not checking the box next to Ask. Since the request will add to you unnecessary actions when closing the browser. But remember! The more types of data you select to synchronize, the slower the synchronization process will proceed (usually this happens in background) and the more traffic will be used (relevant only for slow and “megabyte” Internet). Although then you will get maximum functionality.

Tab Recovery, in a free password manager, serves to select the previous set of bookmarks to sync. Similar to restore points in Windows. These sets are created automatically. If you need to return to previous bookmarks, simply select the previous set and click the Restore Bookmarks button. I recommend that you first view this set by clicking Bookmark Preview. You will be taken to the Xmarks Safari website, where you will be prompted to enter your credentials.

On the tab Profiles, Xmarks program, you can proceed to manage your existing profile and create a new synchronization profile. This will redirect you to your account web page on the Xmarks Safari website. When creating a synchronization profile, you can select the required synchronization profile in each browser.

Xmarks on tab Additionally in area Safety allows you to select what needs to be transferred to the synchronization server in encrypted form. Currently available: nothing, just passwords, that's all. I recommend choosing Encrypt everything. This will ensure the maximum possible confidentiality of your data. Manual rewriting, which is located on the same tab, is needed more for solving non-standard situations and problems. Let's say you haven't used your browser on your office computer for several months. Although on your home PC you have long ago deleted, added and changed a large number of data. So, in this case, it is more advisable, when you come to work, to overwrite all the data existing on your work PC with data from the server. Because they are more relevant. Or, by accidentally deleting the necessary bookmarks from one browser and overwriting the bookmarks (and other data) on the server, you can forcefully overwrite the data on the server from a specific browser, the correctness of which you are sure.

I had a case described in one of the articles on solving problems with Mozilla Firefox and Xmarks. It consisted in the fact that Firefox duplicated one thousand five hundred and sixty-three times (this is not a typo) the same bookmark, and Xmarks managed to synchronize it all. Moreover, for several browsers Firefox and Internet Explorer. Xmarks for Internet Explorer started throwing an error. The free Xmarks password manager for Firefox kept telling me that something was wrong (giving me an error). We managed to solve the problem by deleting everything unnecessary in one of the Firefox browsers and manually overwriting the bookmarks on the server, then overwriting (not synchronizing) the bookmarks from the server to Internet Explorer favorites.

Region Magazine in the tab Additionally serves to display the synchronization log. This information may be useful in solving problems that may arise. Region Server– serves to activate a mode in which you can use not the Xmarks Safari synchronization server, but your own.

When you go to the Xmarks Chrome website, you can access your bookmarks from the web interface. To do this, you should enter your registration data and click Entrance. On the My Bookmarks tab you can see the directory tree of your bookmarks. There you can also open access to your bookmarks for other users. By following the link View Profile Page you will be able to configure synchronization profiles.

Unfortunately, there is no way to review features available for a fee. Among them are synchronization with Android, BlackBerry and others.

If you are interested in this article, I bring to your attention the material by Ilya Shabanov from the website Anti-Malware.ru on the topic “LastPass - a free browser-based password manager”, as well as a video telling about the version of Xmarks even before Chrome support.

Xmarks (formerly known as Foxmarks) is a free browser add-on that can back up and sync bookmarks between popular web browsers like Safari, Chrome and Firefox. “How do I get rid of Xmarks?” That is one of the threads posted in the Apple Communities. Since few people use just a computer to access the Internet these days, solutions that relate to data synchronization are extremely in demand. On the pages of 3DNews we have already talked about popular web services that simplify the transfer of information between several computers and mobile devices belonging to one person. Thus, with the help of Dropbox you can easily synchronize important files between all work machines, and Evernote helps in storing text and graphic information.

Today's material continues the topic of data synchronization. This time we will talk about information that is stored in the browser. The browser has long been the most frequently used program for many, so saving bookmarks and other data (history of visited pages, passwords for open tabs, etc.) is an important part of working with it.

⇡ Standard tools for synchronizing browser data

Tools for synchronizing data between several computers in one form or another can be found in all modern browsers. Thus, Opera uses Opera Link technology, with which all users can create on the server a free copy of their bookmarks, link bar, history of visited pages, notes, content blocking rules, a list of search engines, as well as sites listed on the Express panel ( Speed Dial). To work with Opera Link, you don’t need to install anything additional—just create an account and enable synchronization in your browser settings. Moreover, if you specify the same account information on another computer (or on a mobile device, because Opera Link technology is also supported by the Opera Mini browser), then all settings will be copied and will be synchronized in the future. And if you need to access saved links from a device that doesn’t have Opera browser, just enter your data on the page http://link.opera.com.

Google Chrome also has built-in synchronization tools. If you enter your Google account information in your browser settings, you can synchronize bookmarks, extensions, program settings, themes used, and saved data for autofilling forms. In this case, the information will be stored on Google servers in the user account, as well as in all Chrome browsers, which are linked to this account.

To synchronize sessions in Chrome, you can use the FreshStart extension - Cross Browser Session Manager. Information about open tabs is saved in a separate folder in Chrome bookmarks, so when you enable the built-in synchronization tools, data about saved sessions is available on any computer associated with the user account. True, it’s not very convenient that sessions need to be saved manually - automatic saving only works in case of crash Chrome works. But FreshStart has the ability to edit the content of saved sessions, as well as export links as a text file.

In the Firefox 3 browser, synchronization is implemented using the Firefox Sync add-on, which makes it possible to save bookmarks, passwords, history, tabs and program settings.

This add-on is already integrated into Firefox 4, so there is no need to install it separately. For those who worked with Firefox Sync on the third version, when installing Firefox 4, all data will be transferred automatically. The synchronization add-on is also available in the mobile version of Firefox. The user authentication principle used in Firefox Sync is slightly different from the standard one. To confirm your account and enable synchronization on multiple devices, you must enter not only your login and password, but also the synchronization key - a set of characters generated by the add-on. This key can be viewed or changed in the Firefox Sync settings on the computer where the add-on is already configured.

In addition, in mobile version Firefox Sync and Firefox 4 can use a simplified device linking scheme based on random code. It works like this: on the device that needs to be linked to the current account, you need to request code generation, and then enter it on the computer where Firefox Sync is already running. After this, the data will begin to synchronize.

As for Internet Explorer, this browser does not have built-in synchronization tools, but it is possible to use free utility Windows Live Mesh from Microsoft. Used to identify the user Account on Windows service Live. Using this utility, you can only synchronize bookmarks. Another limitation applies to Windows XP users - the program does not work on this operating system and runs only in Windows environment 7 and Windows Vista.

⇡ Xmarks: past and present

As you can see, synchronization capabilities are implemented to one degree or another in each of the popular browsers. However, if you take a closer look at these means, you can easily notice a number of limitations and inconveniences. For example, Opera does not have a password saving function, and to work with Internet Explorer you need to install additional utility. In addition, many users are accustomed to working in several browsers at once. Unfortunately, web browser developers do not offer any cross-browser synchronization capabilities. Moreover, you can only access saved bookmarks and other data if you install the appropriate browser on the system. Opera is an exception in this sense, since only Opera Link users can access their data on the server and view saved links in any browser window.

The main idea of the Xmarks web service is to synchronize data between multiple devices, regardless of which browsers are used. At the dawn of its existence (the service was founded in 2006), it was known as Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer and existed as an add-on of the same name for Firefox. Today, Xmarks can be used not only with Firefox, but also with Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari (Mac OS X only). In addition, there are versions for iPhone, Android and Blackberry, but these are only available to premium subscribers.

Despite the fact that the tools that Xmarks offers are quite popular among users, in the fall of 2010 it was on the verge of closure. At the end of September, one of the founders of the service announced on the project blog that Xmarks would close at the beginning of January 2011. At that time, the service had more than 2 million users who synchronized data between 5 million desktops. At the same time, the developers conducted a survey among users, asking them to indicate who was willing to pay $10 a year to keep Xmarks alive. The creators of the service promised: if there are 100 thousand people willing, the work of Xmarks will continue. All these ups and downs aroused interest in the service not only among its users, but also among large companies willing to invest money in promising development. As a result, in early December, Xmarks was acquired by the Austrian company LastPass, which is developing a service of the same name for synchronizing user passwords between different devices and platforms.

With this financial support, Xmarks launched a premium service costing $12 per year. As part of the paid service, users are given the opportunity to access their data from mobile devices(iPhone, Android and Blackberry), synchronize open tabs from mobile devices, and back up and restore data, retaining information for a longer period than in demon paid version. In addition, after merging with LastPass, the creators of Xmarks promised to further expand the service, in particular to release extensions for Opera and a version of Xmarks for Dolphin HD. The second point has already been completed today - premium users can now work with the service on popular browser for Android.

⇡ Working with Xmarks

Despite the fact that after merging with LastPass, Xmarks now has a paid version, you can still work with the main tools of the service for free, which is what thousands of users from all over the world do. You need to start by downloading the browser add-on, which is available on this page. You may notice that the synchronization capabilities in different browsers are slightly different, but the main function - bookmark synchronization - works in all programs.

The procedure for setting up synchronization is standard: one account is created, which is then specified in all browsers and on all computers.

If you're using an existing account, Xmarks will ask you how to sync your data. Thus, the user has the opportunity to abandon all local bookmarks in favor of those saved on the server, erase all bookmarks from the server and add only those that are on the computer, or combine links.

As soon as the synchronization process is completed, the bookmarks will become available for work. Xmarks, by the way, also does a good job of synchronizing the bookmarks bar between different browsers.

One of the interesting features of Xmarks is storing information about open tabs. It works for all supported Windows browsers, but is disabled by default. With its help, you can view open tabs on other computers and in other browsers related to the current account. To view all open pages, use the Open Remote Tabs command.

Before the merger with LastPass, Xmarks for Firefox and Google Chrome also had the ability to sync passwords, but this feature is no longer supported. Anyone who has worked with it before is advised to switch to the LastPass password manager, which is more functional and compatible with a larger number of applications and platforms. To make this transition easier, we've created tools to automatically transfer passwords to your LastPass account. Note that, like Xmarks, LastPass is free, but has a premium version that also costs $12 per year. Users of the paid version have access to such features as importing passwords from popular applications (RoboForm, 1Password, KeePass, MyPasswordSafe, Password Agent, Password Safe and others), archiving and recovering passwords, exporting to text file or in the built-in manager Firefox passwords and some others.

⇡ Xmarks Control Panel

You can also work with the service through the control panel on the website my.xmarks.com. Thanks to this, you can always access your data if you access the Internet on someone else's computer or use an unsupported browser (for example, Opera or Safari for Windows). The control panel allows you to follow links, use search tools, view detailed information about bookmarks, preview sites, add bookmarks and folders, recover old links and passwords, import bookmarks from the Del.icio.us service and export them to HTML, open Access folders or individual bookmarks to friends, view tabs open on other computers using the same Xmarks account.

In addition, an important function of the my.xmarks.com control panel is setting up synchronization profiles. Profiles allow you to flexibly manage the data that needs to be transferred from one computer to another. They are useful, for example, in cases where you do not want some of the sites that you have bookmarked on your home PC to appear on your work computer. Using synchronization profiles, you can specify which bookmarks, folders, and passwords should appear in each of them. After this, all you have to do is enter the name of the corresponding profile in the Xmarks add-on settings, and unnecessary information will never appear where strangers can accidentally see it.

⇡ Additional features of Xmarks

Xmarks can not only save and synchronize bookmarks and open pages. The service can also be useful for obtaining information about sites. With over two million people using the service, it makes sense that Xmarks has huge base bookmark data. This means that information about user preferences can be used to inform others about interesting resources.

Firefox users can use the tool to display detailed information about the site, which can be accessed by simply clicking on the blue Xmarks icon in the browser's address bar. After this, you can see a description of the site, its rating, evaluate its popularity among service users, and also go to a page with reviews about the site and the opportunity to write your own opinion.

Xmarks integration with search engines works for Internet Explorer users Google results and Bing. If among the resources selected by the search engine there are sites that Xmarks users like, rating stars will be shown opposite them, and it will also be reported what place the site occupies in the Xmarks thematic catalog. In addition, if there are reviews about the site, you can view them without leaving the search results page.

The service also offers the Xmarks Thumbnails add-on, which generates Google search and Bing thumbnails for all sites. True, the add-on works correctly only on google.com; thumbnails are not displayed on local versions of the search engine (google.ru).

⇡ Conclusion

Without a doubt, Xmarks is very useful service, and the fact that his story did not end in bankruptcy proves this once again. Certainly, further development synchronizer will largely depend on what the developers will offer in the future, what premium features they will attract new users. The policy adopted after the merger with LastPass seems quite reasonable to us. More and more people are using portable devices to access the Internet, so the main advantage of the premium option - the availability of a version for mobile platforms - will encourage new users to subscribe.
