Samsung with two screens is old. Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus review - Smartphones that bring shine in design without forgetting features

At first glance, between Samsung Galaxy You won't find any differences between S9 and Galaxy S8. Samsung's latest flagship is the same Galaxy S8, but with minor design changes and improved performance.

The biggest disappointment with the S8 was its camera, inherited from the Galaxy S7. In the new Galaxy S9 and especially the Galaxy S9 Plus, the cameras have been completely redesigned, and the gadgets themselves have received new features that have not yet been seen on any phone. Let's take a closer look at these features.

Sophisticated Design

The awkwardly protruding Iris scanner on the Galaxy S8 and the fingerprint scanner on the S8 Plus have been improved on the S9 and S9 Plus. The Iris is now flush with the screen, which has smaller bezels, giving more screen options. Apart from these minor improvements, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus look just like their predecessors - super sleek and cutting-edge.

The fingerprint scanner, which is so inconveniently located in the S8, has moved to the place where the pad index finger lays down by itself. Perhaps this is one of the most noticeable differences between the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8. Immediately above the scanner there is a camera with an LED flash; the S9 Plus model became the first S-series device to be equipped with a dual-camera module.

On the right edge of the flagship there is a power button, on the left there is a volume rocker and a Bixby button. On the bottom edge: speaker, USB port Type-C and headphone jack. The bottom speaker can work in tandem with the speaker; it uses Dolby Atmos technology. Together they create stereo sound that is 1.5 times louder than on the Galaxy S8. I'm impressed with both the sound quality and the volume of the speakers.

Both phones feel compact despite big screen- 5.8 inches for Galaxy S9 and 6.2 inches for S9 Plus. The design of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus with an infinity display looks very nice, even if it is not very different from the display of the S8.

The new phones come in different color options: lilac, purple, coral, blue and black.

Samsung Galaxy S9 camera and slow motion

Samsung has refocused the camera on the S9 to have a mechanical aperture that collects light and resists diffraction blur, especially important when shooting in low light. The Galaxy S9's 12MP camera has the lowest aperture of any smartphone at f/1.5 and f/2.4.

The Samsung Galaxy S9's smart camera uses an f/2.4 aperture that helps capture clear photos when daylight and automatically (there is a manual mode) switches it to f/1.5 at night. This guarantees good quality low light photos.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes with an additional 12MP lens and an f/2.4 telephoto lens that allows you to take portrait shots using the Live Focus tool, and creates a fading (blur) effect behind the selected objects.

The Galaxy S9 features a mechanical aperture camera and multi-channel noise reduction that reduces grain and noise by 30%. Photos taken with the S9 have significantly less noise in the darker parts of the photos.

The camera app here has also been redesigned and is now very similar to the iPhone app. Like Sony's Xperia devices, Samsung's S9 and S9 Plus can shoot slow-motion video at up to 960fps, although quality is limited to 720p.

New technology will allow you to overlay a music track on filmed video, A software automatically converts these video files into Loop, Swing or Reverse GIF.

AR emoji

The new AR Emoji addition is a parody of the Animoji from the iPhone X. It allows you to become an animated character that will track and repeat your movements: facial expressions, raising eyebrows and other facial expressions.

The Create My Emoji feature in the Samsung Galaxy S9 allows you to create an animated character in your own likeness. You can use it in any messaging app instead of emoji.

Bixby smart assistant has been improved

The improved Bixby features an instant, real-time translator that overlays translated words directly onto text, without the need to take a photo. Bixby uses a database Google Translate and already knows more languages than before. There is also conversion of up to 63 types of currencies.

The new Sephora app lets you view and apply makeup from Sephora and Cover Girl to your face in real time. If you like something from cosmetics, you can buy it directly from the application. When you point the camera at food, Bixby shows the approximate number of calories, which is also convenient for those watching their figure.

Latest version of Android OS 8.0 Oreo and security

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphone runs Android 8.0 Oreo, which is not much different from the software in the Galaxy S8, thanks to its own user interface from Samsung. Out of the box we get all the essential Oreo features, including picture-in-picture mode.

Samsung allows you to unlock your phone using retina or facial recognition, as well as a fingerprint scanner and new feature Intelligent Scan, which combines eye and facial scanning technologies.

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus I tested are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor, which improves the speed and efficiency of the S9 and S9 Plus by 30% over its predecessors. Applications open and work very quickly here. However, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus comes with 6GB random access memory, and the S9 is equipped with only 4 GB. Both phones have 64 GB of internal memory and a MicroSD slot for increasing its capacity.

Both smartphones feature an incredibly bright and beautiful Super AMOLED screen with a Quad HD+ resolution of 2960x1440 pixels. But, Galaxy screen S9 has a little more high density than the S9 Plus: 570 and 529 ppi, respectively.

With a battery capacity of 3000 mAh for the S9 and 3500 mAh for the S9 Plus, the autonomy is almost the same. Both new Samsung Galaxy phones feature fast wireless charging as well as fast wired charging.

Bottom line

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are top-notch flagships that have the potential to become best phones in the world.

The Galaxy S9 is already available for $720 (40,000 rubles), and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus for $840 (47,000 rubles). If you want to upgrade from an older one Samsung devices Galaxy to Galaxy S9 or S9 Plus, Samsung offers a trade-in program with a discount of up to $350 (RUR 20,000).

Advantages of Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus

  • Excellent sound from stereo speakers.
  • Nice design improvements.
  • Bright and colorful display.
  • First class software.
  • Fast and unique cameras.

Disadvantages of Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus

If you are tired of the same type of smartphones, then you will definitely like the new Samsung Leader 8 flip phone. Yes, they are still being made, but, as a rule, only for the South Korean and Japanese markets.

For many of us, folding phones are a thing of the distant “push-button” past. But in South Korea and Japan such devices are still in demand. Samsung Leader 8 is most likely made specifically for Asian markets, but its technical characteristics and appearance would allow it to become a popular device in other countries. The smartphone uses two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED displays with Full HD resolution. One display is located inside, the second outside, so you can fully use the device without opening the lid. Leader 8 has last year's flagship chip from Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 and Adreno 530 video accelerator, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. In addition, the smartphone has a slot for a micro-SD card up to 256 GB.

Design and cameras

The body of the new product is made of aluminum alloy. Leader 8 looks at least interesting and resembles other devices from the company. The smartphone will be pre-installed with all major branded Samsung apps, such as Samsung Pay, Secure Folder and S Voice. However, smart voice assistant Bixby is not here. This may be due to the fact that the device runs on Android 6.0. The built-in battery capacity is 2300 mAh, the main camera is 12 MP with f/1.7 aperture, the front camera is 5 MP, aperture f/1.9. From a technical point of view, this is a very powerful device and the price tag is unlikely to be below $500. So far, Samsung has not shared data about the countries where the smartphone will be sold, and also has not said anything about the cost of the smartphone. There is a suspicion that a powerful and attractive clamshell would appeal to many users who are tired of the same type of metal and glass bars of modern smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) looks like what you'd expect from an inexpensive smartphone.

Let's just say that Galaxy line J 2017, which we reviewed in detail in the summer, seems noticeably more expensive to look and feel than the Galaxy J2 (2018).

The front panel of the smartphone is filled with glass. In black color it has no visual dominants. The gray matte logo is a little lost. The hardware Home button doesn't really stand out either. It has already died out in top-end smartphones, but still adorns inexpensive Samsung models.

The smartphone chassis is clearly made of metal. Therefore, on the ends and sides we have a cast one-piece rim. At first it seems plastic, but then you realize that it is metal and quite thick. I would like to hope that it serves as reliable protection for glass in case of a fall.

The back cover is made of matte plastic. Even without taking it off, you feel that it is very thin. The lid overlaps the sides slightly.

The visual dominant of the back of the smartphone is the logo and the camera block, covered with glossy glass.

In general, the device looks inexpensive, but neat, although somewhat old-fashioned. However, in this price range the main thing is that it is practical. Perhaps phones in light colors look more impressive.

Connectors and controls

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) does not offer anything fundamentally new in terms of placement of connectors and controls, or rather even resurrects old traditions.

On the front panel we find the hardware Home button. It is located under the display. To the right and left of it are two more sensory function buttons Android. They are simply printed on glass and are not backlit, so dark time days they are not so easy to find.

Above the display there is a camera window, sensors and a speaker.

On the back there is a camera unit consisting of a lens and flash covered with glass. To the right of the block is a slot for the speakerphone.

The back cover of the smartphone can be picked up in a small slot on the right side. The cover is easy to remove, but we found it a bit thin and fragile. Under the cover is the battery compartment.

To insert SIM cards into the slots and install a memory card, you will have to remove the battery. Note that one of the slots is made two-tier. The SIM card is installed in the bottom one, and the memory card is installed in the top one. You won't guess right away. By the way, micro-SIM is used.

If something is unclear in the pictures, you can watch our video on how to insert a SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018):

On the right side there is also a button to turn on the display.

Two separated volume buttons are located on the left side.

At the top end there is an audio jack.

On the bottom there is a microphone and a microUSB connector.

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) turned out to be ergonomic. All controls are easily accessible. The phone is, in principle, comfortable, except that it is a little thicker in comparison with other models, so the sensations were a little unusual for us.

Samsung usually doesn't offer inexpensive models a wide variety of accessories. Galaxy J2 (2018) is no exception. But the problem is easily solved by third-party manufacturers.

A classic plastic bumper will cost about 600-700 rubles.

With the bumper, the already thick phone adds a couple of dimensions. Therefore, it is better to choose an original case with a print, but this will cost 800-900 rubles.

A leather book is a more serious option, especially since it often doesn’t cost as much as plastic. It would cost 700 rubles.

Galaxy J2 (2018) screen

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) received a 5-inch display made using SuperAMOLED technology. At the same time, Galaxy J devices from 2017 had IPS matrices or pls.

It is clear that the screen of such a cheap smartphone cannot be the same as that of a device that costs twice as much. So there must be a catch somewhere. And here it is – the display resolution is only 540x960 pixels. Probably, many have already forgotten that such permits exist. Today the minimum is 1280x720, even in many inexpensive models. Apparently, 540x960 with AMOLED is excusable, according to Samsung.

The pixel density of the display is low: 220 ppi. Again, most displays today are around 300 ppi or higher.

Subjectively, everything is quite good. On an LCD screen with such a diagonal, if desired, one could consider slight pixelation. She is not visible here. But there are more or less natural colors, as well as real black.

And here is the second pleasant surprise: all the basic settings for Samsung screens are also available. There is brightness adjustment, and automatic increase on the street, and a blue filter, as well as color presets: adaptive, basic, photo, video, the ability to manually adjust the color temperature and saturation of individual colors. The only missing setting is the Always On display. The function is available only in top gadgets.

The smartphone's white brightness is 273.06 cd/m2, which is not enough by today's standards. In bright light, the only thing that should save you is that the black brightness of SuperAMOLED is zero. But in general the display may fade. On the other hand, it will not hurt your eyes in the dark.

The main display profile of the Galaxy J2 (2018) almost hits 6500K. The color temperature is as close to natural as possible. One of best performance that we came across. The adaptive profile has slightly more high temperature. The colors will be cooler, but perhaps most people are more used to it. After all, for almost all smartphones this figure is noticeably overestimated.

Color gamut Samsung display Galaxy J2 (2018) is noticeably larger than the sRGB range, which is normal for SuperAMOLED screens.

The gamma curves are far from the standard, but overall the screen deserves a good rating.

The smartphone recognizes five touches.

Galaxy J2 (2018) camera

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) received two cameras. The main one has a resolution of 8 megapixels, the front - 5 megapixels. Both of them are capable of recording Full HD video.

The characteristics of the cameras are not the most high level. And we're not just talking about matrix resolution. Both cameras also received fairly dark lenses with f/2.2 aperture. Usually Cell phones have lenses with an aperture smaller than f/2.0.

The camera interface is standard. On one side there are shutter buttons for video and photos, as well as a preview window. From another settings button, flash control, full screen mode and camera changes.

The camera supports touch focusing, as well as exposure correction - a “make it lighter or darker” slider appears.

Right swipe opens the filter preview window. Just like others new Samsung they are divided into groups: for landscape, for portrait. The order in which filters are displayed can be changed. There is a group of recently used filters.

Swiping left opens a selection of modes. The set is standard, there is a professional one, panorama, continuous shooting, extended dynamic range.

The settings are common for both cameras. You can change the resolution of pictures and videos, enable a timer, geotags, grid, and some other parameters.

The front camera has the same buttons. There is a flash, or rather a backlight LED, which simply lights up during shooting.

The floating button next to the shutter brings up face correction options; you can correct skin tone, tighten your cheeks and enlarge your eyes.

Right swipe filters are fully available, but there are only two modes: self-portrait and photo+sound.

Note that the camera also supports vertical swipe, which changes cameras.

The maximum resolution of images from the main camera of the smartphone is 8 megapixels, aspect ratio 4:3.

In good lighting, the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) takes surprisingly good pictures. Slightly more difficult shooting conditions are fraught with soap, digital noise and other disadvantages.

The main camera allows you to record Full HD video.

The video also turned out to be quite good.

The front camera has only three resolutions. Maximum – 5 megapixels.

The front camera takes worse pictures, but apparently it’s suitable for selfies.

The resolution options for the front camera are the same as the main one.

Video is a little worse. The camera reacts more slowly to changes in lighting, but in general it is also suitable for taking pictures of yourself. Don't forget about front flash. Everything is much better with her.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018)

The characteristics of the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018), like the entire line, have significantly improved compared to the previous generation.

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) received a rather modest, and not the latest platform. It uses Snapdragon 425. In fact, its 4 Cortex-A53 cores look modest only against the background of top processors, or the more recent Snapdragon 435. In fact, the 425 performed quite well in our tests, especially if it was not accompanied by less than 2 GB of RAM. Here Samsung was greedy and supplied only 1.5 GB.

Adreno 308 graphics built into the processor are not enough stars from the sky, but are able to provide enough quality game. The storage capacity has been increased to 16 GB and this can be an advantage in this price range.

The smartphone supports LTE category 4 with speeds up to 150 Mbit/s. Kit wireless modules standard: Wi-Fi up to 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.2. NFC is missing.

The camera is quite modest in terms of the number of megapixels, but it can record Full HD video. Previously, Samsung did not provide such an opportunity in this segment.

The SuperAMOLED display can also be considered as an advantage.

The battery capacity is 2600 mAh. At first glance, not much, but the platform is not very productive, although it has a rather demanding display.

Performance testing

We decided to compare Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) with. It has a less efficient MediaTek platform and also has a PLS display. Let's see what happens. Other characteristics are similar.

In the first Basemark test, the new product lost to the J2 Prime.

JetStream browser test shows parity, but still new smartphone a little faster.

In the complex PC Mark test, the new product is still slightly better.

Finally, AnTuTu also puts the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) in first place. In general, we can say that there is not much difference in performance between smartphones. Let's see what the autonomy test shows.

Autonomy Galaxy J2 (2018)

The Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) spent 17% on our standard set of actions, and the J2 Prime spent a whopping 26%. At the same time, the battery capacity of smartphones is the same. Android 7.1.1 and Snapdragon 425 clearly optimize power consumption better.

The main load on the battery comes from the display, especially when SuperAMOLED turns on all the pixels. Pleased with the extremely low consumption when playing music and at idle.

The energy saving manager is located in the Optimization section of the smartphone settings menu. There are two energy saving modes: medium and maximum. Both can be customized. Allows you to adjust the brightness of the display, processor frequency and the operation of wireless networks in the background. You can also designate applications that will automatically close when the display turns off, and which will be allowed to run.

Games on Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018)

The Snapdragon 425 did not let us down in gaming tests and on smartphones with high resolution. Galaxy J2 (2018) should handle all games.

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, everything flies;

  • Asphalt 8: good, extremely rare, but slows down;

  • Modern Combat 5: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Trigger: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Trigger 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Real Racing 3: excellent, everything flies;

  • Need For Speed:No Limits: excellent, everything flies;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, everything flies;

  • Frontline Commando 2: excellent, everything flies;
  • Eternity Warriors 4: excellent, everything flies;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, everything flies;

  • Trial Xtreme 4: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Effect: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Effect 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Target: excellent, everything flies;

  • Injustice: excellent, everything flies;

  • Injustice 2: great, everything flies.

And indeed, only one game did not receive the highest rating. Not the best best result, however, not the worst.

Take a look at what else Samsung smartphones popular in Belarus today.

Read what cellular telephone with two screens you can buy it and not regret it. We compare Russian and foreign smartphones. Who will win and why so many displays?

Back in the late 90s, we used devices with two displays with all our might. These were, on the lid of which there was an auxiliary screen. But with the advent of the smartphone era, manufacturers have focused on the all-in-one form factor. However, this does not mean that gadgets with two screens have completely disappeared from store shelves. On the contrary, this article will convince you otherwise.

Why does a smartphone need two screens?

Two displays make operating the system easier and more intuitive. It's hard to argue with this. It’s not without reason that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS game consoles have become so popular. You can also remember people who work with video and music on a professional basis - they often also use two monitors.

This number of displays makes working with text, graphics and other media more convenient. Moreover, you can implement screens using different technologies. In this case, LCD panels will solve completely different problems. And, in the end, the good old clamshells should also use two displays - many people still really like devices in this form factor.

So why has a dual-screen cell phone become so rare? If you go to your nearest cell phone store, you simply won’t find such devices. Even push-button clamshells now most often have a faceless cover, on which there is nothing except the camera lens or the SOS button. This is explained by the complexity of manufacturing gadgets with two screens.

  • Firstly, production lines are no longer designed for this, and their modernization costs a lot of money.
  • Secondly, design similar smartphones- this is a very difficult matter; poor companies simply do not have the necessary engineers on their staff.
  • Thirdly, the display is one of the most expensive parts of a smartphone, and no one wants to make the design even more expensive - no one will buy the device in the future because of this.
  • Fourthly, many people have become unaccustomed to the second screen. And if they don’t need it, then why bother releasing a device with two displays?

In short, there are many reasons for the lack of phones with two screens. Fortunately, some companies are still starting to experiment. Some projects remain only on paper in the form of patents. Others are shelved, appearing only at exhibitions and in news headlines.

And only a few reach serial production. Often even small-scale production, since none of the manufacturers expect large volumes of sales. In this article we will talk about all significant smartphones with two displays, which are either present in some online stores, or at least announced.

YotaPhone 2

  • Operating system:
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Permanent memory: 32 GB

Perhaps this is the device you think of when you ask yourself to name a phone with two screens. First model from Russian company Yota Devices had a number of shortcomings, but it was remembered by visitors to many exhibitions. When creating the second model, the engineers had already worked on their mistakes, eradicating them all. The result is a very good and memorable device.

This smartphone must work on a single charge for a very long time. To do this, the creators introduced a high-performance but energy-efficient chipset from Qualcomm into it. The phone also received a phone that also does not tend to consume large amounts of energy.

Finally, there is a second screen made using E-Ink technology. In fact, this is electronic paper that only consumes charge when the picture is updated. Special Applications, created by Russian developers, allow you to display a variety of information on the second screen located on the rear panel.

Using a smartphone becomes unusual and convenient at the same time. But you will have to abandon the case, because it would simply cover the auxiliary display, which has a 4.7-inch diagonal.

The remaining characteristics of the smartphone would hardly disappoint the buyer. Especially if the purchase was made immediately after release. Now, of course, not everyone will be satisfied with enough old version Android. And an 8-megapixel camera will not seem enough. But the set of wireless modules looks good even now - it includes LTE, NFC, and even Wi-Fi 802.11ac. In a word, it’s not a sin to buy such a device even now!

YotaPhone 3

  • Operating system:
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 625
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Permanent memory: 64 GB

Unfortunately, sales of the second version of the Russian smartphone with two screens were not particularly active. In this regard, the Yota Devices enterprise turned out to be unprofitable. The rights to design the third model were sold to one of Chinese companies, she also got the opportunity to be the first to launch sales in her homeland.

The device may not reach Russian shelves at all, since it was released in an extremely limited edition. It’s interesting that they continued to write software for it Russian developers- They coped with this task perfectly. As operating system this time Android 7.1.1 was used, which is good news.

In terms of displays used, the device is not too far removed from its predecessor. On the front panel of the device there is a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel with the same Full HD resolution. On the back wall there is a display made on the basis of electronic ink, the diagonal of which has grown to 5.2 inches.

The only difference is that now the work of all this is ensured by much more powerful processor. And this is again a chipset from Qualcomm. The memory capacity has also increased, which is especially pleasing, because the smartphone does not have a slot for a microSD card. The built-in cameras have also improved - they now have a resolution of 13 and 12 megapixels.

And a special sensor determines which side the device is facing towards the user in order to activate the corresponding display. Finally, YotaPhone 3 is able to please with a fingerprint scanner, which was not present in its predecessor.

In the Chinese market, the smartphone will be sold under the name YOTA3. In Russia, it will receive the usual name YotaPhone 3. However, it is still completely unclear when the phone with two screens will reach Russian retail. Everyone knows in advance that the device is unlikely to be able to interest a mass buyer, and therefore retailers are in no hurry to sell it.

Meizu Pro 7

  • Operating system: Android 7.0
  • CPU: MediaTek Helio P25
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Permanent memory: 64 GB

While Russian smartphones are primarily designed for reading e-books, Chinese smartphones are designed for taking selfies. The fact is that the smartphone has an auxiliary 2-inch display that can act as a viewfinder.

It turns out that the buyer will be able to use double Sony camera IMX386 for filming yourself! Under the lenses of this module are hidden 12-megapixel matrices. One of them is monochrome, which should make images sharper.

Of course, the display can also perform other functions. For example, you can display a clock and an alarm clock on it. There are even games that work quite well on such a tiny screen. Well, as for the main display, it has a 5.2-inch diagonal and QHD resolution.

It is made using AMOLED technology, which ensures long operating time. The battery, by the way, has a capacity of 3000 mAh and support for technology fast charging mCharge 3.0.

It is curious that the resolution of the front camera of Meizu Pro 7 is 16 megapixels. That is, there is not always any point in using the rear display. It should also be noted that the Meizu smartphone Pro 7 Plus. It is equipped with a slightly more capacious battery with support for the fourth version of mCharge.

This device also has a larger display and increased memory capacity. And the processor built into it is more powerful and energy efficient - it uses MediaTek Helio X30. Of course, such a smartphone is also noticeably more expensive.

LG V20

  • Operating system: Android 7.0
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 MSM8996
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Permanent memory: 64 GB

Very powerful smartphone, close to the performance of flagships. There is also a large amount of memory here. The processor used is almost top-end. By at least, he was like this shortly before the release of the device.

And the phone also has dual camera, supplemented, among other things, with optical image stabilization. High-speed wireless modules allow you to watch movies and play multiplayer games anywhere outside the home.

If the gadgets discussed above had an additional display located on the rear panel, here it is located on the front. The secondary screen has a resolution of 160 x 1040 pixels, and it is located directly above the main 5.7-inch display.

This small LCD panel displays application icons and some important information. In general, the second screen cannot be called useful. Rather, this is a “trick” that is inherent only in South Korean V-series smartphones. More precisely, it was inherent - the LG V30 has only one display.

The South Koreans' smartphone turned out to be very interesting. Most of all, buyers are happy not even with the second screen, but with the presence of a full-fledged DAC. This allows you to connect high-quality headphones to your smartphone and enjoy excellent sound.

LG X view K500DS
  • Operating system: Android 6.0
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Permanent memory: 16 GB

LG could not help but introduce an additional display into one of its budget smartphone. As a result, it was received by a model called X view K500DS. This device turned out to be noticeably smaller. Its main screen has a diagonal of 4.93 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

To the right of the 8-megapixel front camera is a secondary display with a resolution of 80 x 250 pixels. Like the two V-series smartphones, the screen is designed to make the device more unique, not more functional.

In terms of technical characteristics, the LG X view K500DS is comparable to budget models many competitors. There is support for LTE, and the chipset uses a quad-core solution from Qualcomm. On the back of the device is the lens of a modest 13-megapixel camera, devoid of any bells and whistles.

The smartphone is also distinguished by the presence of two slots for SIM cards and a minimum weight of not exceeding 120 g. You may regret the lack of a fingerprint sensor - you will have to use a PIN code or pattern to lock it.

  • Operating system: Android 7.0
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM 8996 Pro
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Permanent memory: 64 GB

HTC decided to follow the path of LG. Its flagship also received an auxiliary screen, located directly above the main one. Its diagonal is 2.05 inches and its resolution is 160 x 1040 pixels. This display allows you to get acquainted with current events immediately after you take your smartphone out of your pocket, without having to unlock it.

As for the main screen, it has a 5.7-inch diagonal with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The pixel density turned out to be very high! The device also has a good camera, complemented by laser autofocus and optical stabilization.

As befits a flagship, HTC U Ultra includes many wireless modules. Almost all of them belong to high-speed standards. It is difficult to make claims against a processor running on clock frequency 2.15 GHz. In a word, looking at this smartphone, you understand why they are asking for such a lot of money.

  • Operating system: Android 6.0
  • CPU: MediaTek MT6753
  • RAM: 3 GB
  • Permanent memory: 32 GB

In the case of T3, the Chinese company went for an experiment. She tried to achieve a very expensive appearance so that businessmen would be interested in the device. She also introduced an additional screen into the smartphone - it is located on the top end.

This is a very modest display, the diagonal of which does not exceed 0.96 inches. It cannot be called particularly functional. First of all, it is intended to display the time. Notifications can also be displayed on it, but during the day the display fades almost completely, making them barely visible. Another problem with this screen is the unreliable coating - the glass used is easy to break.

The smartphone supports LTE networks and is powered by an eight-core processor from MediaTek. The main screen of the device is small - it has a 4.7-inch diagonal and HD resolution. The phone also boasts two SIM card slots and a large amount of memory. But you shouldn’t rely on NFC, a gyroscope and other “goodies” - they are not here.

Vertex C309
  • Operating system: absent
  • CPU: unknown
  • RAM: unknown
  • Permanent memory: absent

Nowadays, clamshells rarely come with a second screen. However, exceptions to the rule still exist. For example, Vertex C309 is a flip phone with two screens, one of which is located on the lid. Under the additional screen you can find buttons for accepting and ending a call. This is very convenient - you can accept a call even before opening your mobile phone.

It is necessary to understand that this regular phone, not a smartphone. The usual characteristics await you. The resolution of the internal screen is 320 x 240 pixels, and it was created using TFT technology. The external display turned out to be even more modest - its resolution with a 1.77-inch diagonal is 160 x 128 pixels. However, this is quite enough to display the date and time. The device also includes a camera, but its resolution does not exceed 1.3 megapixels.

The mobile phone has two problems. Firstly, it requires a memory card, since the amount of built-in storage is measly kilobytes. Secondly, you need to handle the device carefully - any fall to the floor can lead to damage. And forget about installing Java applications - there is no such option here.

Fly Ezzy Trendy

  • CPU: unknown
  • RAM: unknown
  • Permanent memory: absent

Another clamshell with two screens. It turned out to be much more reliable, although dropping it on a hard surface is also not recommended. The auxiliary screen is located on top cover. It has a square shape and its resolution is 128 x 128 pixels.

By default, this display shows analog clock. As for the main screen, it has a 2.4-inch diagonal with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. By the way, the camera built into a smartphone is capable of shooting video with exactly this resolution.

The device has a plastic case. The weight barely reaches 70 g, making the device almost unnoticeable in your pocket. The phone has two slots for SIM cards. But it has almost no built-in memory - a microSD card is required to operate the camera and play music.

More Dual Screen Phones Worth Mentioning

If we continue the topic of folding mobile phones, we cannot help but recall BQ BQM-2000. This device has a two-inch display with a resolution of 220 x 176 pixels. Additional screen has a square shape, and the weight of the device is 84 grams. In all respects, this mobile phone is worse than those reviewed earlier, but it is found in stores a little more often.

Highscreen Ice 2- this is already a full-fledged smartphone, made in the form of a candy bar. It features long-lasting operation and good performance.

The only thing that spoils the impression is the version of the operating system that is becoming outdated before our eyes. And this device is already quite difficult to find on sale. The second screen is located on the back wall of the smartphone - it has a very small sizes, and it mainly displays time, date, alarm clock and other information.

At the time of writing Meizu X2 has not yet been announced. But renders of the device have already appeared online. They show that the device will receive a round auxiliary display.

It will be located, as you might guess, on the rear panel. It seems as if the Chinese decided to borrow a round screen from some smartwatch. Nothing can be said about the characteristics of the smartphone yet - they are kept secret.

One cannot help but remember Samsung W2017. This is a clamshell smartphone with top-end specifications. The device is powered by Snapdragon 820, and rear camera a 12-megapixel module with f/1.7 aperture is used. Both screens are made using Super AMOLED technology, and their characteristics are exactly the same.

They have a 4.2-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The pixel density reaches an unusually high value of 525 PPI. Unfortunately, the device was released in an extremely limited edition. It was difficult to buy even in the manufacturer’s homeland, and the smartphone, it seems, was not available at all. The price also frightened many buyers - it was much higher than the cost of South Korean flagships.

The folding form factor also includes the one introduced in October 2017 ZTE Axon M. However, there are no physical keys. Instead, the user will receive two identical screens located next to each other. The manufacturer assures that with this implementation of the design, multitasking goes to new level. Most of all, the device resembles the Nintendo 3DS - but the smartphone is much thinner. But it’s unlikely that many people need such a “tablet mode” from their smartphone. The Chinese understand this, so they are going to release their phone in a very small edition.

Summarizing

Unfortunately, many of the dual-screen phones described above are difficult or even impossible to purchase. Or they have a very high cost. It just so happens that people are afraid to experiment.

They are accustomed to ordinary monoblocks with one screen, so devices equipped with two displays are produced in relatively small quantities. And if a manufacturer orders a small number of components, then they cost him much more. That is why such gadgets are very expensive on store shelves.

Have you ever used phones with a pair of screens on their body? And speech in in this case not about those old flip phones. If yes, then write about your operating experience in the comments!
