Each partition is assigned a letter designation, as a result the user gets the opportunity to work with each of them as if it were an independent disk.

There are several programs for creating partitions, but the most popular are Paragon Partition Manager and Acronis Disk Director. Both have a clear graphical interface, and even a beginner can figure out how to partition a hard drive in a few minutes. There are ongoing debates on forums about which one is better. So, both Paragon and Acronis work equally well with partitions, so the choice comes down to user preferences.

The main question: “whether to split the disk into several partitions or not” is not as simple as it might seem at first glance, and requires a careful analysis of all the pros and cons. In this article, we will look at how to partition a hard drive using Paragon Partition Manager version 11 (PM).

There are two ways to use the program:

1) if you prepare a second hard drive, and from the main one you can boot into the Windows operating system. Typical for external devices and personal computers;

2) if there is only one hard drive with which you need to perform work. Used mainly with new laptops.

In the first case, you need to first download and install the distribution package of the Paragon PM program. Then, by connecting a new hard drive, you can perform the required operations. Please note: creating a new partition does not destroy the file system, so you can always “pinch off a piece” from the main disk and create an additional one. This is also true for the reverse action - unification.

The archive contains the serial number and product key of the program in a text document.

In the second case, you will have to prepare a Paragon PM BootCD, since there is no operating system installed yet. By booting from it, the user receives the same capabilities as in the Windows application. Sometimes it may be necessary to switch the disk controller mode from AHCI to IDE in the BIOS (if the hard drive is not detected by the program).

So, let's start dividing the hard drive with Paragon Partition Manager.

The main program window will open, where we select Partition Manager. This is shown in the image.

Next, we will see a list of existing sections. In my case, my hard drive has two partitions, drive C and drive D. You can have only one partition, but to store files it is advisable to create at least one more drive like mine. If you store everything on one system partition where the operating system is located, then after a failure or after reinstalling the system, your files will be deleted.

Using the example of creating another partition, I will cut off the free space from drive D and create another partition under the letter Q.

And so we have a list of existing partitions opened, in which I right-click on partition D and select the item (Move/resize partition). Here's the image.

An additional window will open, where we can change the size by holding the left mouse button over the edge of the scale, or by using the up or down arrow buttons. It's up to you.

After I shrunk the partition by 50 GB, an unallocated area of ​​50 GB appeared in the list of partitions. The next thing we need to do is create a Q partition in this unallocated area. Right-click in the unallocated area and select (Create Partition).

In the next additional window, you must specify the partition letter and confirm the creation of the partition by clicking the (Yes) button.

This way you can prepare several sections at once. Important: these actions are just tasks, to complete which you should click the green “Apply” checkmark at the top. If something is wrong, then the specified actions can be canceled (red cross). It’s that simple: any computer user can figure out how to partition a hard drive.
