Editing formulas

Editing a formula is practically no different from editing regular text. You can delete formula field values ​​and enter others instead. The easiest way to do this is to position the cursor in the desired formula field and then press one of the edit keys. To delete an entire template, select it and click Delete key or Space.

If these values ​​do not suit you, then you can independently set the font size for formulas - the Other item is intended for this. In addition, the formula editor allows you to override the font size of existing formula sizes. For example, if you are not happy with the 12 pt font size for the Regular size, you can set it to 14 pt or change the Small Index size from 5 pt to 10 pt. This is done using the Define menu item in the Size menu. As a result of selecting this item, the Dimensions dialog box will open (Fig. 3.3), in which you can define the types of dimensions assigned to various formula elements. When you override a dimension type, all formulas in the Formula Editor window are updated to reflect the changes made.

Transformations will be reflected in documents only after changing these formulas in the editor. In the window that appears, you can set the font size for all possible sizes of symbols in the formula editor: regular, large index, small index, large symbol and small symbol. To preview the installed changes, use the Apply button. To reject the changes, click Cancel; to confirm - OK. You can return the dimensions to the default values ​​using the Default button.

Formula styles

Any set of symbols entered in the formula editor has its own style. In most cases, the necessary styles are determined automatically, but sometimes you need to set them manually, for example, when you need to enter spaces or plain text into a formula. Besides this, the most common cause Formatting errors include entering words that include abbreviated names of functions.

The following formula styles are available in the Word formula editor.

Mathematical. This style is assigned to all entered characters by default. It does not contain font definitions or character styles. When working with this style, a special algorithm is used to recognize the names of mathematical functions, such as sin, log or exp. Function names are automatically assigned the Function style; letters not related to these names have the Variable style.

Text. Selecting this style makes it easier to enter plain text into the formula. While working with it, you can use the Spacebar, as well as enter plain text into formulas created using the formula editor. Not available for this style automatic recognition and formatting mathematical symbols.

Function. Used to write notations for standard mathematical functions such as sin and log.

Variable. Used in notation of variables and constants.

Greek. This style is used to write Greek letters.

Matrix-vector. As the name suggests, it is used when entering matrices and vectors.

Using the Other item, you can independently define new symbol style parameters in the formula editor (Fig. 3.5).

You can change the style that is set automatically by using the corresponding Style menu item. To change the default settings, use the Define item. In the window that appears, you can set character formatting options for different styles. The checkboxes in the Character Format column determine whether the text is bold or italic. If you change the settings after clicking OK, all styles used in the document will be updated to reflect your choice, and all formulas will be formatted in a new way. Changes in document formulas will only be reflected after they are reopened in the formula editor.

If you need to enter one character in the Greek or Matrix-Vector style and then return to the current style, you can use special keyboard shortcuts to change the style: the Greek style is Ctrl+G, and the Matrix-Vector style is Ctrl+B. For example, if you want to enter a single Greek letter (Greek style, lowercase b), press Ctrl+G and then b.

Entering text into a formula

If you need to provide a small text explanation when entering formulas, you can do this without closing the formula editor window. In the formula editor, you can write short non-mathematical phrases, such as “for all” or “except.” For such entries it is convenient to use the Text style (Fig. 3.6.). Working with a formula as an object

This editor allows you to create complex formulas. Formatting of the text of the latter is carried out in the settings this editor. There you can configure the font type, size and style, alignment, spacing.

Program installation

Since Microsoft Equation is part of the MS Word program, it is installed when installing this program. In turn, MS Word is installed when installing MS Office. If, after installing the latter, it is impossible to find the formula editor, it means that in the installer the checkbox to install it is unchecked by default. In order to install Microsoft Equation, you need to go to the "Control Panel", there select "Add or Remove Programs", find Microsoft Office, click on the "Change" or "Change/Delete" button. In the window that appears, select “Office Tools” and expand them by clicking on the plus sign on the left. Inserting a formula in MS Word

Setting the sizes of elements

The sizes of various elements in formulas are not set exactly the same as in Word. To change them, you need to go to “Define” in the “Dimensions” menu. A window will open in which the types of elements will be listed: regular, large and small indexes, large and small symbols. On the right side of this window is a sample image of these types of elements in the formula. When you place the cursor at a size corresponding to a certain type of element, this type will be highlighted in this image.

To the right of this image are the buttons for this window. The "Default" button resets all your changes to the default settings. To confirm the changes made, you must press the "OK" button or Enter on the keyboard.

Formulas that will be entered in Word in the future will be displayed with the changes already made. Formulas entered earlier will change if they are edited, otherwise they will remain in the form in which they were originally entered.

Setting intervals

Similar to the spacing settings in the "Paragraph" menu and the "Font" menu in the formula editor, you can also change the spacing between elements. To do this, select “Interval” from the “Format” menu. In the window that opens, the intervals are defined as percentages. They are determined in relation to the normal font size that was selected in the window of the same name. Here, just like in the font sizes window, there is a view on the right. The change in interval will be clearly represented in this preview.

If you don’t like everything entered, you can restore everything by clicking the “Default” button.

Toolbar

The buttons on the toolbar are located in two rows. The top row contains symbols that can be used in formulas. The bottom row contains patterns, such as a fraction containing a denominator and a numerator. Mathematical symbols are also located here.

The spacebar when using Microsoft Equation is not inserted manually by using the same key on the keyboard. However, in the top row of the panel there is a Spaces and Ellipses button that allows you to select the amount of spacing. This makes sense if some special interval is applied or if it did not work for some reason automatic placement spaces.
