place. Yokohama tires

The Engine magazine found out what the leading tire manufacturers have prepared for the upcoming winter season 2016/2017. As it turns out, not all manufacturers update their product lines every year, so we were only interested in new products or tires that had undergone modernization.

Bridgestone

The Japanese tire company has released a new studded model Blizzak Spike-02 for this winter. The new tires differ from the previous generation tires - Spike-01 - by so-called “directional” studs with an elongated edge and a more reliable fastening system. In addition, the Japanese changed the composition of the rubber compound to prevent the tires from hardening in severe frosts, and also used a new V-shaped tread pattern. In terms of driving performance, the new model, compared to the Blizzak Spike-01, is distinguished by improved braking properties and wear resistance.

Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 tires will initially be produced in 30 standard sizes with a seat diameter from 13 to 18 inches, with a profile height from 40 to 70. By the 2017/2018 season, the company promises to release a version for SUVs and crossovers. This year, Bridgestone also released a new studded model, Noranza 001, but these tires are not supplied to the Russian market.

Continental

The Continental company, part of the concern of the same name, this season the main “combat units” remain the same as last winter: these are the studded IceContact 2 tire and the non-studded ContiVikingContact 6 (pictured). Both models have been modernized: they received, in particular, an expanded range of standard sizes and versions with proprietary puncture resistance technologies - SSR and ContiSeal.

IceContact 2 tires are available in 2016-2017 in 112 sizes for passenger cars and crossovers. When creating tires, ContiSilent technology is also used, which, thanks to a layer of special foam, significantly reduces tire noise. In addition, IceContact 2 tires are produced using a proprietary stud system, in which the studs are coated with a special adhesive compound that acts like a strong glue during the vulcanization process. ContiVikingContact 6 tires are being produced this winter in 97 sizes for passenger cars, as well as SUVs and crossovers.

Cordiant

The Russian tire company Cordiant has upgraded its Snow Cross studded tires for the 2016/2017 season and released a version for SUVs. In the 2016 modification, the tires received Finnish-made Spike-Cor studs. The weight of the new studs is significantly reduced due to the aluminum body and octagonal tungsten carbide insert. Finnish studs, as well as a new rubber compound, as stated by the company, have significantly improved the traction properties of tires on ice.

In 2016, Cordiant Snow Cross tires began to be produced in 25 new sizes for wheels with a landing diameter of 14-18 inches. In addition, the company released the Snow Cross SUV model for SUVs and crossovers, available in 13 sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches in diameter.

Dunlop

Dunlop has introduced two new products for this winter. Both are studless.

The Winter Maxx WM02 model is a “passenger” tire that replaced the WM01 model. According to the manufacturer, the rubber compound created using 4D Nano Design technology has increased resistance to aging, the braking distance on ice is reduced by 12% compared to previous generation tires, and the grip properties of the tire on icy surfaces are improved due to greater number of lamellas. Winter Maxx WM02 tires are available in 91 sizes from 135/80 R13 to 245/40 R19.

For Central European conditions with relatively mild winters, Dunlop released the Winter Sport 5 SUV model this year (pictured). The tires, as the manufacturer assures, have high grip properties on wet asphalt and slippery surfaces, and also “cling” to both compacted and loose snow better than Dunlop tires of previous generations. The Winter Sport 5 SUV model is sold in 14 sizes, covering, as Dunlop says, about 50% of the European SUV and crossover market.

Gislaved

The Swedish brand has released two new models for the 2016/2017 season: friction tires SoftFrost 200 and studded NordFrost 200 (pictured). The “200th” SoftFrost differs from the previous generation tire in its asymmetrical directional tread pattern. Its outer part is “responsible” for handling, the inner part is responsible for grip on different types of winter surfaces, as well as for the rapid removal of water and snow slush from the contact patch.

Together with a soft rubber compound, the new pattern, according to the manufacturer, has improved the traction and braking characteristics of the tire, as well as lateral grip and handling on ice, snow and wet asphalt compared to the previous model. The new NordFrost 200 tires, according to the manufacturer, improve handling, braking and traction on ice; In addition, the new tires are distinguished by increased wear resistance. The tire tread pattern has become directional asymmetrical.

In addition, the new product from Gislaved received ultra-light studs with a special carbide tip shape, which significantly improved dynamic characteristics new products on ice compared to previous generation tires. NordFrost 200 tires are made using a new rubber compound that maintains grip and elasticity in severe frosts.

Goodyear

Goodyear has introduced UltraGrip Ice SUV friction tires for the new winter season, created, as the model name suggests, specifically for crossovers and SUVs.

The tires are based on IceGrip rubber compound, which is designed to operate in arctic temperatures. Thanks to it, as the company says, the tires remain flexible even in extreme cold. A sipe locking system is used in the shoulder area of the tread, which improves vehicle handling when driving at high speeds. The tire design ensures optimal pressure distribution in the contact patch, which also has a beneficial effect on the level of road grip. UltraGrip Ice SUV tires are also equipped with a wear indicator in the form of a “snowflake”, whose visibility against the background of the tread pattern makes it easy to monitor the degree of tire wear. In addition, Goodyear has expanded its size range friction tires Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2 in up to 32 sizes.

Hankook

The main new product from the Korean brand Hankook for the 2016/2017 season is the studless Winter i*Cept iZ² model of the so-called Scandinavian type (for harsh winters and icy roads).

The directional tread pattern of the new tires is made in the likeness of the paws of a Siberian husky, in addition, the company has used proprietary patented technology of three-dimensional sipes to improve traction characteristics, braking properties and handling. A specially developed silicon-containing mixture allows you to maintain the elasticity of the tread even at extremely low temperatures.

Winter i*cept iZ² tires are initially available in 50 sizes: with diameters from 13 to 19 inches, with profile heights from 35 to 70 and tread widths from 175 to 255 mm, with speed indexes T and Q. Some models are available in a version with increased load capacity. In addition, Hankook has upgraded its Winter i*cept evo2 tires: the model range has been expanded with new sizes for sports cars and SUVs.

Tires size 245/50 R18 H *RSC are supplied as standard equipment for BMW 7 Series sedans. Tires with SealGuard technology are available for the first time for mid-range cars such as the VW Passat and Touran. A special sealant is pumped into the latter, which tightens punctures with a diameter of up to 5 mm in the tire tread area.

The Winter i*cept evo2 model (pictured right) is now available in versions with a bore diameter of 16-20 inches with a tread width of 195-295 mm and a tire profile height to width ratio of 30-60 with speed coefficients H, V and W. Mostly The line includes models with increased load capacity (Extra-Load - XL). Hankook SealGuard technology is used in tires for the winter season - 2016 with dimensions 215/60 R16 H and 215/55 R17 V. The Winter i*cept evo2 SUV size range is represented by tires with a seat diameter of 16-22 inches with a tread width of 215-295 mm and profile 30-70 with speed coefficients from T to W.

Kumho

Another manufacturer from the Land of Morning Freshness, Kumho, also presented two new tires for the new season: friction and studded.

The studless model of the High Performance class WinterCraft WP71 is addressed to owners of powerful passenger cars. The tires, according to the company, hold the road well on both wet and dry surfaces, and are also highly wear-resistant. Special 3D lamellas provide increased traction on snow and ice. Tires are available in 42 sizes, speed indices - H (210 km/h), V (240 km/h) and W (270 km/h).

Studded tires for SUVs and crossovers WinterCraft SUV ice WS31 (pictured) received a new rubber compound, as well as an improved stud configuration of 20 lines. The sipes in the tread are located asymmetrically, which improves the traction properties of the tires on different types of winter surfaces. In addition, the new model is superior to previous generations of brand tires in such indicators as handling and braking efficiency on ice. The WinterCraft SUV ice WS31 model is produced in 14 standard sizes, speed indices - T (190 km) and H (210 km/h).

Matador

According to the press service of the manufacturer, the new MP30 Sibir Ice 2 studded tire has received a number of features of models from the “senior” brands of the Continental concern, and the technical characteristics of the tire have been improved in eight main indicators of vehicle behavior on ice and snow.

In particular, the symmetrical directional tread pattern with two central longitudinal ribs has improved handling and directional stability. Large blocks with an increased number of gripping edges provide increased traction on snow, and their V-shaped arrangement allows you to quickly remove water and slush from the contact patch.

The new model also received lightweight double-flange ED “eco-studs” with a round carbide tip, due to which the car on the new tires demonstrates confident behavior on ice and snow. The studs have increased wear resistance throughout their entire service life.

Michelin

Michelin has introduced winter tires for passenger cars and crossovers in new sizes for the 2016/2017 season. In particular, Michelin Latitude X-Ice North 2+ studded tires (pictured), designed for various types of SUVs and crossovers, became available in sizes 245/55 R19, 275/50 R20, 295/40 R20, 265/40 R21, 295/40 R21. In addition, this model with dimensions of 265/45 R20 and 295/40 R20 has received a recommendation from Porsche for installation on the Macan crossover.

Michelin X-Ice 3 friction tires, designed for passenger cars and small crossovers, are offered in the 2016/2017 winter season in 63 sizes with a seat diameter from 13 to 19 inches. The model is also available with Zero Pressure technology in sizes 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17, 225/50 R17, 225/55 R17. Michelin X-Ice North 3 studded tires, also aimed at owners of cars and small crossovers, are offered this season in 67 sizes from 14 to 20 inches.

Pirelli

The famous Italian tire manufacturer's main novelty this season is the studless Cinturato Winter tires, which replaced the SnowControl Serie 3 model.

The tires belong to the European "Touring" class and are intended for all countries where seasonal tire changes are legally established - Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, as well as for Eastern Europe. Scandinavian countries, we note, are not included in this list - residents of the northern regions of Russia should take note of this.

According to the manufacturer, the new tires have improved braking efficiency compared to the previous generation model due to special directional sipes in the shoulder areas of the tread (Multiactive 4D Sipe technology), increased traction force, and increased service life by 10%. In addition, the new tires effectively resist hydroplaning due to arrow-shaped blocks in the tread pattern. Pirelli Cinturato Winter tires will be available in 30 sizes for wheels with a seat diameter of 14-16 inches for passenger cars and 16-17 inches for SUVs and crossovers. Speed indices - T (190 km/h) and H (210 km/h).

Yokohama

The main “impact unit” in the model range of the Japanese company Yokohama this season was the new studless tire for SUVs and crossovers iceGUARD SUV G075.

Tires have low rolling resistance (for better fuel efficiency) and at the same time provide “ high level safety on icy roads." iceGUARD SUV G075 tires have a new tread pattern and a rubber compound with special materials that absorb moisture from the surface of the ice. Due to this, the designers managed to reduce the braking distance on ice by 23% compared to the previous Geolandar I/T-S model. Yokohama iceGUARD SUV G075 will be produced in 24 sizes from 175/80 R15 to 235/55 R18.

In addition, the company has expanded the range of standard sizes for “passenger” friction tires W*drive V905. In the winter of 2016/2017, tires will be produced in 19 new standard sizes, and their total number will reach 78. The model is now available to both owners of golf-class cars (in the standard size 195/80 R15) and those who “like it hot” (in the size 295 /30 R22). W*drive V905 tires are also available in a crossover version.

Before the winter season, every car enthusiast faces a difficult choice - which winter tires are best to buy. Traffic safety, people’s lives and compliance with the law in general depend on this. According to clause 5.5 of Appendix No. 8 of the Customs Union, the law stipulates a mandatory period for driving on winter tires from December to February of each year. However, the weather conditions in our country are different every year, and the snow can “fall” in October and disappear at the end of January. That is why the period for mandatory “change of shoes” is determined by regional authorities. Both studless and studded winter tires are permitted. Traffic rules The mandatory tread size and the size of winter tires for each car are regulated.

In addition to creating road safety, the presence of spikes (as authorities believe) poses a threat to modern road surfaces that do not have snow on them. This leads to the destruction of the layers of the road, so traffic police officers carefully check the “shoes” of passenger cars in the off-season.

If you know everything about winter tires, have chosen a model and want to buy winter tires, go to the store "Free Wheels"- verified! We have ordered from it more than once, the prices are always better than others . Large selection of tires, wheels and various auto products. You can order online with delivery even to the regions.

Before considering, let's look at the features of rubber and which winter tires are best to buy. Regular summer tires harden and crack in the cold. Therefore, winter tire manufacturers are trying to use innovative approaches to creating wheels that will keep the rubber intact at any negative temperature. Inexpensive winter tires may not have high quality rubber, which is why their service life is much shorter. It should be remembered that winter tires, unlike summer tires, hardly wear out, and therefore can last more than 5 years.

Before buying tires, sellers, for obvious reasons, will not allow you to test winter tires, so you will have to rely on reviews and reputation of the product. You can read the articles below, as well as on manufacturers’ websites, on special automotive portals and in social network groups.

New or used winter tires

In addition to the wide variety of tire manufacturers in the store, car enthusiasts choose between new and used wheels. Both have their pros and cons.

Such wheels are guaranteed not to swell during the first ride (in the case of high-quality production). If this happens, they can be returned under warranty. New tires will last longer without repair; it will not be difficult to install new studs in them, if possible. It is difficult to find used tires for some car models, so you have to buy or order only new product. The only drawback is the high price. But it also turns into a plus if you calculate the data in the ratio of depreciation and service life of new rubber.

When it comes to buying winter tires, many car owners first turn to popular websites that sell used goods. There the owner indicates how long the wheels have been in use. Information is presented verbally; it may be impossible to verify the authenticity of the information, so the buyer has to believe it. The price for winter tires that have already been used by another car owner will be lower than for new products. But taking into account the average service life of 2 to 4 seasons, in the end such an acquisition is unprofitable.

Which winter tires are better?

As already mentioned, winter tires can be studded or non-studded. The difference between them is not only the presence of thorns.

  • Scandinavian winter tire – designed for maximum grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. It has an average pattern depth of 8 to 10 mm, with a discharged effect. The design is applied in a checkerboard pattern, rectangular or diamond-shaped patterns. The protector is equipped with lamellas. There is a large distance between the drawings. This form is created for pressing the surface;
  • European winter tire– designed for driving on wet roads from rain or snow. All slots are thin, with plenty of water channels.

The studs on these tires are arranged in different orders, depending on the manufacturer. Most often they can be of 2 types: round or diamond-shaped. The most reliable are those “recessed” in the coating. They are deeply soldered, while the tip on the outer side protrudes strongly and interacts well with the road.

Interesting fact! In some countries, the use of studs on wheels is prohibited.

Spikes can help with traction on icy and snowy roads, but during rain they can, on the contrary, fail, increasing the braking distance. The spikes add noise and fly out quickly when driving on surfaces without snow and ice.

The term “all-season tires” is often heard. Such products are actively used in Europe, but in the harsh Russian climate they are not suitable for use. The rating of the best winter tires for Russians consists of studded and non-studded wheels, which is what you should focus on.

Rating of the best winter tires 2018

So, let's get started with our review of the best winter tires. The ranking will include the top brands and most time-tested models of winter tires.

The best winter tires of 2018 presented from several popular manufacturers. In general, last year’s situation on the supply market has not changed much; the annual quality leaders according to the winter tire rating firmly hold their positions

1 place. Our rating of winter tires opens - Nokian

Popular winter tires with a wide range of wheels adapted for the harsh Russian climate. Nokian winter tires are specially designed to suit the characteristics of each vehicle and for different weather conditions. Despite the large range of products, there are also negative opinions about this brand in reviews. One of the disadvantages is the noise when driving. They complain about slight braking difficulties and skidding. In terms of price, the wheels are in the middle of similar offers.

Nokian winter tires are popular among Russian car owners in 2 models: Hakapelita and Nordman. Both models are claimed to be the best in the line specifically for harsh Russian winters.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded winter tires

A series of winter tires designed specifically for harsh climatic conditions. The presence of spikes makes the grip on the road reliable, the tires do not make much noise, and do not cause strong complaints according to reviews. This rubber has been the leader among studded tires since 2009. There are 8 models in the Hakapelit winter tire line. The popular Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 has vacuum clutch technology, and “RunFlat” technology is available for some sizes. Radiuses from 13 to 22. In the Sun line there are from 14 to 22 especially for SUVs.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 According to the developers, it was created to save fuel, eliminate noise and have excellent adhesion to the road surface. A test of winter tires 2018 showed that this model copes really well with ice, but reviews indicate that the tires are very noisy.

The latest model in the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 line- even more balanced and adapted to winter conditions. Equipped with two different types of studs, which gives even better grip on ice, under different temperature conditions.

The second most popular winter tire from Nokian also made it to the top:

The range is presented from 13 to 17 radii with a profile width ranging from 155 to 235. The tires are equipped with spikes, tubeless, radial. Excellent traction on ice, snow and wet surfaces is promised. In fact, it gets along well only with snow and partially with moisture. Ice promotes skidding and prevents successful braking. Another variety of the series - Nokian Nordman 7 Sun with radiuses from 15 to 18 and with a profile width of up to 285 is produced specifically for SUVs.

2nd place. Bridgestone tires

Bridgestone winter tires have been produced by a Japanese company since the 30s of the last century. Since then, car models and production technology have changed a lot. The company produces several model lines of summer, all-season (Velcro) and studded tires. The most popular models winter tires - Blizak and Ice Cruiser.

Bridgestone blizzak VRX and DM studless winter tires

Bridgestone Blizzak VRX for cars and DM for crossovers is considered the most universal tire that has proven itself very well. Designed for long-lasting service on difficult icy surfaces. A special feature of these models is clear instructions for fastening the wheels - they have outer and inner sides for more efficient work. The creators of the models in this series took care of the reliability of the rubber coating. When the outer layer wears off, the porous surface prevents loss of adhesion for a long time. Bridgestone Blizak tires last a long time, remaining soft and resilient. Despite the difficulties of covering domestic roads, they are very resistant to natural features.

Also in the bridgestone blizzak line of winter tires there are the increasingly popular SPIKE-01 and SPIKE-02 models, which also deserve attention.

Designed for even more difficult climatic conditions. New scheme the arrangement of studs in 16 lines instead of the previous 12 increases the chances of maximum stability of the car. Bridgestone Ice Cruiser winter tires repel moisture and have good road stability. The rubber was specially developed as a multi-component rubber with the ability to hold studs longer than other manufacturers. The latest model of studded winter tires, Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000, have proven themselves well among car enthusiasts and have taken an honorable place not only in our rating, but throughout the world.

3rd place. Michelin tires

The French manufacturer of winter tires is quite popular throughout Russia. Michelin winter tires have several lines specifically for severe weather with negative temperatures.

The michelin x ice line of winter tires is developed using the unique “APS: Adaptability” system. It allows the rubber to bend only in the right places, fixing the position of the car on the road. The sipes of the michelin x ice 3 winter tires are made in a Z-shape, the shoulder area has sharp edges. This allows a car equipped with such tires to get out of any snow “porridge”; the wheels simply grind the substance, throwing it back and pushing the car forward without skidding.

The Michelin X Ice Nord 3 winter tire is equipped with a “smart stud” system. At high negative air temperatures, the rubber around the stud sets, hardens and contributes to better retention of the studs and greater aggressiveness on the road. This may increase noise, but maintains traction more reliably. Overall the tire is quite soft and performs well on any snowy surface.

4th place. Continental tires

The durable frame of products from the German manufacturer won the hearts of Russians back in the 90s. Tires were imported into the country along with used foreign cars. Their endurance made the products popular and gradually Continental winter tires entered the top three in popularity.

The products contain high-quality artificial rubber and silicates. The tread has a drainage pattern and many small lines on the tread that drain fluid well. The tire is equipped with rigid diamond-shaped blocks, which perfectly hold the car in turns.

Winter tires Continental Conti Viking Contact 6 are ideal for all-wheel drive vehicles. They easily cope with off-road conditions, literally scattering snow porridge and keeping the car from skidding.

They interact well with asphalt, have an asymmetric tread, radii from 12 to 24. Designed for fuel economy and good handling on ice with a smooth ride. A large number of studs gives good grip on ice, and the deep tread handles snow-covered areas of the road well.

According to reviews, the tires are quite noisy and do not pull out of drifts with snow “porridge”. But a good distribution of tread zones, with a fairly multiple number of toothy studs, gives a feeling of security and confident driving sensations.

5th place. Cordiant tires

Unlike previous tire representatives, Cordiant winter tires have an average price category. They are available to most car owners in Russia, so there are more product reviews.

Winter tires Cordiant Polar

Winter series cordiant tires polar is produced in both studded and non-studded forms. The rubber was developed on the basis of the predecessors of cordiant polar. It has an ornate pattern on the tread in the form of a snake, which allows you to easily get rid of moisture on the go. The tire is designed for 128 studs in 4 rows. Longitudinal and lateral grip, effective braking and successful vehicle control. Disadvantages include acoustic features and increased fuel consumption. Cordiant Polar 2 drives poorly on snowy roads and can contribute to skidding during heavy braking. The main reason for purchasing for many owners is affordable price and a satisfactory number of spikes.

Cordiant snow cross – tires for compact and middle class cars. Stabilizing agility is achieved through a V-shaped tread pattern and a contact patch that wicks moisture away from the tire. The Cordiant Snow Cross tire is not suitable for winter with air temperatures above +5 degrees. This does not apply to the beginning of the off-season - despite the “mess” on the roads, there are often frosts at night and the use of studded tires is necessary. But if it’s winter like this throughout the entire season, and the asphalt is not covered with snow at all, this model will not be suitable for use. When driving on a road without snow cover, it creates loud noise, wears out quickly, the spikes quickly fly off.

6th place. Dunlop tires

Dunlop winter tires are less popular in Russia compared to the previous titans of tire production for cars. It has the widest range of models specifically for harsh snowy winters. The wear resistance of tires of this brand allows them to be successfully used for several seasons. In total, the company has several popular series, each of which is divided into a list of models with features of the tread pattern and tire structure.

Dunlop produces quite a few good models of studless tires, such as Maxx SJ8, Maxx WM01.

Tire radii range from 13 to 21, there are one and a half sizes. High quality rubber, withstands long trips at low temperature. Minimal noise on the road, the tires do not “tan.”

But the most popular and best winter tire among the entire line is Dunlop sp winter Ice 02 and Dunlop Grandtrek Ice 02

Studded winter tires Winter ice 02 for passenger cars and Grandtrek 02 for crossovers are well suited for regions with harsh winters and difficulties on snowy roads. Winter Ice and Dunlop Grandtrack rubber is equipped with 3D Maura-Ori lamellas and a unique triangular pattern in the middle, which effectively removes moisture. Dunlop winter tires have unique studs with carbide cores. This makes them practically indestructible on ice and effective in dealing with snowy roads.

7th place. Pirelli tires

Manufacturer of the world's only snow racing tires. The Pirelli high-speed model is designed for speeds of up to 270 km/h. More modest models are designed to withstand bad weather in its various forms.

Produced by innovative technology“Pirelli Dual Stud”, for which special double studs are produced, literally sealed into rubber. Pirelli winter ice zero is designed for rapid acceleration. Otherwise, it does not exhibit very good braking properties in snow, and is quite noisy.

Equipped with hexagonal studs attached to special flanges. Presented side by side from 13 to 21 radii, for SUV class cars. Pirelli Formula Ice is the manufacturer’s most “long-lasting” model. It is almost impossible to lose or damage reliable studs, so Pirelli winter tires retain their properties for a long time.

8th place. Hankook tires

One of the best, adapted to the variety of harsh Russian climates, are Hankuk winter tires. The special structure of the lamellas, the snowflake on the tread and the “husky tracks”, together with the elegant functional tread pattern, have won the hearts of Russian car enthusiasts. The affordable price of tires finally influenced the popularity.

The hankook winter tire line has 14 models, each of them is developed for specific conditions and created according to the wishes of customers.

Hankook Winter I Pike has gained good popularity among car enthusiasts and is well established in the market, gaining its fans. The line also has a sports version, Hankook Winter I Pike RS and Hankook Winter I Pike RS+.

During sharp braking, Winter I Pike winter tires “grab” the road, preventing the car from skidding and reliably holding the vehicle in place. There are through drainage systems and the number of tread blocks has been doubled. Externally, the design is very elegant, which also catches the eye of buyers.

9th place. Kama tires

Despite the active efforts of foreign winter tire manufacturers, they cannot fully understand the complex climate of Russian roads. The domestic plant Nizhnekamskshina is an expert on this issue. For many years they have been producing reliable, inexpensive and practical tires for modern cars.

The only option for KAMA winter tires that deserve attention:

Kama 519 tires do not have intricate patterns or complex stud systems. They are developed using the Finnish Irbis system - one of the most reliable studded tires in the world. Kama Euro 519 winter tires have 2.45 mm studs, securely seated in high-quality rubber.

Modern rubber used in the manufacture of products perfectly adapts to difficult weather conditions. The Kama Euro 519 winter tire has a two-layer tread. The long service life of this model is achieved precisely thanks to its two-layer design, where the bottom layer is hard and holds the spikes, and the top layer is softer and can change depending on the type of road surface. This model is the most adapted to all types of roads. The only dissatisfaction is expressed in reviews regarding the handling of a car “shod” with such tires on ice. But the cost and braking performance are at a level suitable for most buyers.

10th place. Yokohama tires

The uniqueness of this manufacturer for Russian consumers lies in the versatility of its product range. The company produces not only tires for passenger cars, but also wheels for agricultural machinery, aircraft, etc. Regarding modern production methods, it is one of the leading leaders throughout the world. Yokohama analytics are based on test drives, scientific studies of rubber properties and customer reviews.

Yokohama winter tires are popular among Russian car owners. The use of an asymmetric tread pattern makes the tires as resistant to slipping as possible and has a good effect on road grip.

Michelin

The French company Michelin has expanded its winter tire portfolio with four new products. The role of the flagship of the line of Nordic studded tires designed for harsh winter conditions is now assigned to the model. The tread of the X-Ice North 4 tire in size 205/55 R16 now contains 250 studs! This is twice as much as the X-Ice North 3 tire, and, on average, 30% more than the tires of leading competitors. The directional tread pattern has a high proportion of positive profile, a developed network of grooves and a new sipe design. New generation elastomers have been added to the tread rubber. They push back the glass transition degree of the tread rubber to -65 degrees, maintaining performance at ultra-low temperatures.

The sixth generation of the “Alpine” range of winter tires is designed for mild winter climatic conditions in the central regions of the European continent. The Alpin 6 model has a high level of safety, both with a new tread and with a worn one. This was made possible thanks to a tread pattern that changes with wear and is modeled using EverGrip technology. To ensure performance, the new product uses a multi-layer rubber compound. The outer tread layer provides an initial high level of traction in winter conditions, while the inner tread improves traction on snowy surfaces as the tire wears.

The new winter tire for crossovers combines innovative developments from French specialists aimed at excellent traction at high speeds. New design The tread is made using the latest technological and engineering solutions from Total Performance, aimed at achieving high efficiency on winter roads. The latest generation of rubber compound with sunflower oil has improved performance at low temperatures. Precise steering at high speeds is achieved through the tread using self-locking StabiliGrip sipes. Numerous deep grooves and curved blocks ensure efficiency on snowy roads.

Michelin Agilis CrossClimate tires are addressed to drivers of southern regions who operate cars at temperatures down to -5 degrees Celsius. The new product is designed using a V-shaped tread and self-locking 3D sipes. The sharp edges of the tread blocks combined with 3D sipes provide reliable grip on snowy roads. At the same time, in summer operating conditions on dry and wet surfaces, the new tire demonstrates characteristics identical to summer tires. Thanks to a new tread compound with functional elastomers, the tire has a 35% longer service life than the average of leading competitors.

Continental

The German manufacturer of car tires, Continental, presented a new non-studded Nordic type - VikingContact 7 and a non-studded European type model - WinterContact TS860S. The tire replaced the high-performance Nordic tire ContiVikingContact 6. The rubber tread compound was adapted for the conditions of Russia and Scandinavia. Its versatility is due to its soft rubber compound with active silicon dioxide and rapeseed oil. These components improve the tire's performance on wet roads and maintain the elasticity necessary for reliable grip at low temperatures. The tread has a directional design with an optimized ratio of blocks in the contact patch and an effective network of grooves, which improves the drainage of water and slush. The tread blocks are connected to each other by small bridges, ensuring the stability of the tire when cornering. The increased number of interlocking sipes of the 3D Trapez Sipes allows for impressive traction and braking performance on icy and snowy roads.

Addressed to owners of powerful and sports cars. Engineers integrated a special brake groove into the central part of the tread, thanks to which it was possible to significantly reduce the braking distance. Improved traction characteristics are ensured by rigid, wide tread shoulder blocks that provide excellent traction and, as a result, precise control. An increased number of multi-directional grooves and a developed network of traction sipes ensured effective traction on snow.

Goodyear

American tire manufacturer Goodyear has introduced a new studded tire. The new product combines a number of advantages and technologies present in the most successful Goodyear models. Thus, the directional tread pattern with design modifications was borrowed from the Dunlop Ice Touch tire. It has managed to establish itself as an effective tool that guarantees reliable grip on winter roads. It is molded from a highly resilient rubber compound to ensure performance over a wide range of winter temperatures. The engineers equipped it with deep multi-functional grooves and sipes with multiple engagement edges. Effective traction on snow is ensured by traps integrated into the blocks of the shoulder areas that capture and hold the snow. Dynamic grooves in the central part of the tread improve traction on any type of winter roads. The developed network of lamellas creates a large number of engagement edges that improve acceleration and braking performance on slippery and wet roads.

The design of the studs, which was made according to the Active Stud Technology active stud concept, was not left without attention. It implies an enhanced effect of the stud on the road surface due to its 6-sided shape.

The Finnish company Nokian Tires has relied on a studless new product for passenger cars and its version for crossovers and SUVs with the prefix SUV. The unique innovations of the new product include the Arctic Sense Grip concept, according to which the tread was equipped with lamellas of various designs that adapt to any weather conditions. The tread is molded from a third generation Cryo Crystal rubber compound with sharp solid particles. Multi-faceted Snow Claws located between the tread blocks and shoulder areas create balanced traction on ice and snow, especially during braking and acceleration. The new product is positioned as the best offer for electric cars and hybrid cars in terms of efficiency.

The main feature of the model was the use of Aramid Sidewall technology. It has already proven itself on other Nokian Tires models designed for heavy vehicles with a high center of gravity. The technology consists of sidewalls reinforced with aramid fiber, providing high strength characteristics and resistance of the tire to impacts and cuts. The sidewalls of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV tire are made of a rubber compound with extremely durable aramid fiber, also used in body armor.

Bridgestone

Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone has introduced two new products for the current season. The key for the brand was the premium non-studded model. The tire is known in the Japanese domestic market as the Blizzak VRX2 and has been successfully sold there since the fall of 2017. The new product has a multifunctional tread with an innovative pattern that improves traction. The increased number of sipes contributes to effective traction and braking performance. Thanks to the self-locking effect, engineers were able to maintain the rigidity of the blocks necessary for stable and precise handling. The new tread compound formula is made using patented Multicell Compound II technology, which provides closer contact with the road. Bridgestone technologists have integrated micropores and cavities into the tread rubber compound that absorb water from the road surface. This keeps the tread in contact with the hard surface of the ice, which ensures reliable traction.

The second new product of the company was the model presented this year. Car enthusiasts with more than ten years of experience remember the legendary Ice Cruiser 7000 model. The modification with the letter S, as planned by the Japanese, should repeat the success of its prototype. To meet modern trends, the sidewall of the new product was updated, placing a new company logo. Having identified the cause of the high noise, Bridgestone engineers optimized the length of the studs, which significantly improved acoustic comfort.

The Korean company Hankook has launched two new winter products on the market: the studless Winter i*cept X RW10 model and the studded Winter i*pike RS2 W429 tire for harsh winter conditions. The studless new product is designed for the fast-growing crossover segment that needs reliable traction in harsh winter conditions. The tread of the new product has a V-shaped architecture with sharp edges, providing high traction and grip characteristics and good handling on wet road surfaces. The increased number of grooves and self-locking sipes ensured a high level of safety on snow and ice, even with a dynamic driving style. Sharp 3D Grip Claw edges provide snow traction, while stepped grooves prevent snow from accumulating when accelerating or braking on ice. Zigzag grooves effectively protect against aquaplaning, ensuring rapid drainage of water from the contact patch. A system of special moisture-absorbing holes prevents slipping on melted snow. Zigzag ridges on the shoulder blocks ensure uniform pressure distribution along the edges of the shoulder area.

The studded tire has been specially designed for harsh winter conditions. Thanks to the new Snow Slit tread design with an increased number of studs, as well as a new rubber compound, the tire has outstanding performance characteristics on all winter surfaces: snow and ice. Zig-zag grooves provide improved traction in deep snow, while fang-shaped edges on both sides of the tread improve traction on packed snow. Spiral boosters in the shoulder grooves effectively remove water from the contact patch on icy road surfaces.

Kormoran

In the upcoming winter season 2018-2019, Kormoran is focusing on the Stud 2 studded passenger car tire and the non-studded Snow model. The tires have an identical directional tread pattern, which has proven to be an effective tool on difficult winter roads. Despite its external similarity, the tire tread has a number of significant differences from the Snow tire tread. As befits a studded tire, it is designed to guarantee reliable performance when driving on ice in harsh winter conditions. The tread blocks into which the studs are integrated have been significantly strengthened by reducing the number of sipes. Among other things, the tire uses double rubber compound technology, which is softer at the contact patch between the tire and the road and harder at the base of the carcass. This effectively protects the tire from premature loss of studs, extending its service life.

The directional tread of the tire consists of blocks combined into five longitudinal ribs. This architecture ensured confident traction and short braking distances on any type of winter surface. The diagonal orientation of the blocks and the variable pitch of the blocks in the shoulder areas of the tread have significantly improved comfort indicators and reduced noise levels. A network of multidirectional grooves quickly removes water and slush from the contact patch, preventing the occurrence of aquaplaning. The central tread blocks, combined into a continuous central rib, guarantee a high level of directional stability and precise steering responses during high-speed maneuvering.

Korean tire manufacturer Nexen has high hopes for the WinGuard Sport 2 SUV and WinGuard Ice 2 models introduced this year. The non-studded SUV winter tire is designed for modern sports cars. She has already received the prestigious design award iF Design Awards 2018. The merit for this was the tread with a directional V-shaped pattern. It offers improved traction on wet, snowy and icy surfaces thanks to 17 percent more traction edges and 3D sipes, as well as an updated high-silica compound. It has a high elasticity index, which allows the tire to be used effectively in harsh winter conditions.

Nexen WinGuard Ice 2 non-studded winter tires are designed for a wide range of passenger cars driving in harsh winter conditions. The manufacturer focuses on high braking performance on ice and stable handling on snowy roads. The Novika has a pronounced asymmetric tread pattern with densely spaced three-dimensional sipes that improve traction on winter roads. The new rubber compound with the inclusion of silica and secret components helps maintain elasticity at low temperatures and optimizes the tire's grip during the thaw.

The Japanese company Toyo will be presented with two new products this season: a studded tire and a friction model for crossovers, the Snowprox S954 SUV. The studded new product is designed to replace the one that appeared on Russian market in 2013, the previous generation model Observe G3-ice. Thanks to the use of double blocks, Japanese specialists managed to increase the positive profile of the tire, which made it possible to optimize the distribution of studs in 28 lines. This significantly increased the tire's grip on ice. The tread blocks feature a variety of multi-directional wave-shaped 3D sipes, providing confident maneuverability when turning the steering wheel in any direction. For efficient movement in deep snow, the tire was equipped with special Snow Blade protrusions, which act as hooks. The new Ice Force cleat has a wider flange for 20 percent better cleat retention in the hole, and a pentagonal carbide tip for better traction on ice.

The wide tread of the new Toyo Snowprox S954 SUV tire provides drivers of heavy SUVs with excellent handling. The combination of lamellas of different thicknesses promotes uniform pressure distribution in the contact patch, improving grip on wet road surfaces while maintaining high snow characteristics. A new rubber compound containing highly dispersed silica and active polymers was developed especially for the new product. It reduces heat generation, reduces rolling resistance and increases grip on wet surfaces.

Spike-02 retained the V-shaped directional tread pattern, but changed the shape of the cross grooves, plus increased the number of sipes. All this allows you to more effectively remove snow-water slurry from the contact patch, and this makes it possible to confidently drive the car on a snowy road. The rubber compound has also been improved. According to the Japanese, now the tire does not tan at low temperatures, and its wear resistance has been increased by 30%.

The tire is produced in 30 standard sizes. Planting diameter - from 13 to 18 inches.

Goodyear and Fulda friction tires

In Europe, sales of the new Goodyear UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1 tires began in May of this year. Soon we will have them too. The new product is, in fact, a Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen-1 passenger tire adapted for crossovers, which was launched into mass production last year.

The passenger tire has received a lot of flattering reviews, in particular, it was highly appreciated by experts from TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH. We can assume that the tire for crossovers will also be successful.

By the way, this is not the only new product from the manufacturer. The Fulda brand, owned by GoodYear, showed the Kristall Control HP2 model. Let us remind you that Americans sell more budget tires under this brand.

These tires replace the Kristall Control HP model, which appeared in 2010. The tread pattern is tricky. In its central part there is a kind of network consisting of many grooves. This “network” holds the snow in the contact patch, thereby improving the traction properties of the tire.

The rubber compound has been improved. Now it can withstand low temperatures even more steadfastly and in severe frost the tire does not harden, thereby ensuring good handling. The composition also includes silica (silicon dioxide). It improves grip on wet roads.

Dunlop for crossovers

The tire has a new ultra-light stud with a triangular-shaped carbide insert. However, there is no point in talking about technology in detail. Most of them are already known to us from Conti models. Since this is a premium brand, the latest developments are first used in Continental tires and only then adopted by brands for more budget segments.

The line includes 64 standard sizes designed for passenger cars and crossovers.

Continental

There is no news yet about new products from the famous manufacturer. But the concern has already released some “new things” under its sub-brands, “playing” in more budget segments. We have already talked about Gislaved, but here is another new model - the budget new Matador MP 30 Sibir Ice 2.

Compared to its predecessor Matador Sibir Ice, the tire has a strengthened carcass, and rigid blocks in the shoulder areas of the tread provide good directional stability during maneuvers. The spikes are aluminum with a carbide insert. The “nails” are positioned in such a way that the wear of the studs and tread is even. That is, the risk of thorns falling out is reduced. The tire life has also increased.

A total of 21 standard sizes with mounting diameters from 13 to 17 inches are available.

All-season tires and Velcro from Yokohama

The company introduces updated all-season tires Geolandar G015 and Velcro IceGuard Studless G075.

Yokohama Geolandar G015 is designed for SUVs and pickups. The tire has been radically updated. A new tread pattern has appeared, the strength of the sidewalls has been strengthened, and the composition of the rubber mixture has been redesigned. An icon of a snowy three-mountain peak appeared on the sidewall. This suggests that the tire can now be used in winter - the rubber does not harden, maintaining elasticity even at subzero temperatures. According to company representatives, these tires can be used all year round. Even when the temperature rises above 20 degrees Celsius. The new product is presented in 64 standard sizes.

IceGuard Studless G075 tires are designed for crossovers and SUVs.

The G075 has a directional tread pattern and the rubber compound absorbs water like a sponge. The original moisture-absorbing composition of the mixture removes the water film from the contact patch, improving the braking properties of the tire. In total, the G075 line includes 18 standard sizes from 16 to 18 inches. Profile: 55–70.

Kumho

South Korean Kumho presented the Kumho WinterCraft SUV ice WS31 studded tire for crossovers. It was created on the basis of a purely passenger tire Kumho Wi31. The tread patterns are almost identical, so the relationship is immediately obvious.

To suit the specifics of SUV cars, the rigidity of the blocks in the tread pattern was increased. Improved handling and braking on ice. Engineers also worked on optimizing the shape of the drainage grooves. This, in turn, helped improve the behavior of the tires in slush and increase resistance to aquaplaning.

Another new product from the manufacturer is Kumho WinterCraft WP71. These Velcro play in the premium segment. The Koreans promise excellent grip and handling on wet and dry roads, as well as on snow. Thanks to the directional pattern and a large number of sipes, the tires “row” well in loose snow. There are 42 sizes available from 225/50 R16 to 245/45 R19.

Nokian

The majority look up to Finnish tire manufacturers. They are one of the recognized leaders, so there is always special interest in their new products. So, for this winter Nokian has prepared a studless model WR A4, which will replace the WR A3.

The tire has an asymmetric tread design, and a number of changes have been made to the design aimed at improving performance properties. The rubber compound with silica is called Performance Traction Silica. In addition to natural rubber, it contains canola oil, which provides reliable grip in winter conditions. This compound also increases the wear resistance of the tire and improves stability when driving on snow.

The technology of so-called “snow claws” is also used: the edges on the longitudinal ribs of the tread lamellas are made sharp. They provide additional grip on snowy roads.

Michelin and Kleber

It is still unknown what the company will show under its main, premium brand. But for products aimed at the mid-price segment, there is clarity. The first new product is the BFGoodrich g-Force Winter 2, a tire with a directional tread pattern designed for a wide range of passenger cars.

Compared to its predecessor, the g-Force Winter tire, the new product has a more aggressive tread pattern and improved traction on snow and wet roads. Concentrated in the central part of the tread maximum amount sharp edges, which, clinging to the coating, provide good directional stability.

Kleber, another budget brand owned by Michelin, features the Krisalp HP3. This is almost a complete analogue of the BFGoodrich model. There are minor differences only in the tread pattern. This tire replaces the previous model HP2.

The tire is literally cut with drainage grooves that improve the removal of snow and water slurry from the contact patch.

Both models are aimed at a wide range of passenger cars - from subcompact cars to minivans.
