Which DNS server is better to register when the standard one does not work. How to find out if the DNS server is enabled on your computer

Anyone who has ever encountered the creation of a website at least once in their life knows about the need to register a list of DNS servers. For experienced web masters, this article will not be a big discovery, but for beginners, this post can shed light on certain subtleties DNS settings.

Managing DNS settings is a very important component for many users who independently manage their Internet project. The performance of your website may depend on how correctly the DNS setup process is carried out. The whole point is that DNS changes are not visible immediately after installation, they appear only after some time, and it will be very difficult to understand where exactly the mistake was made.

What is DNS

Domain Name System (DNS) is a system that provides domain names with their numerical equivalent. The Domain Name System is seen as a repository for domains and their corresponding IP addresses. Each server (computer) has 2 main identification marks - a domain name and a unique set of numbers. The first identifier is characteristic of human perception, for example, domain website. The second, numeric, is intended for computer processing; the so-called IP address. For example, when you enter a specific URL into a browser field, the domain name system checks the IP associated with that address and then redirects the user to the page they need. In other words, the main task DNS servers consist of transliterating Internet protocols (IP) into domain names and vice versa.

All DNS records are stored on physical server, which processes great amount requests daily. As soon as the user has given a request for the desired domain name, the DNS server processes the information in just a matter of seconds and issues desired result to the user. For saving DNS records A separate category of NS servers is responsible. In turn, 2 representatives are responsible for the NS servers. The first one is administrators. domain zones. And the second representative is either , or an Internet provider.

Updating DNS records

When you purchase a new domain name, the registrar company provides you with a control panel in your personal account. The NS server will be registered by default to the registrar. If your hosting was purchased from a completely different place than the domain, you can register your NS yourself.

Processing records

When a domain is first registered, information about it is sent to other DNS servers approximately 2-4 hours after registration. Ideally, the site will start working exactly after these 4 hours. However, on average, distributing information to other servers can take 24 hours or longer, after which your resource will be fully operational. An explanation for such a long delay in data dissemination among servers may be the factor update frequency. That is, the servers are configured for a certain frequency of updates, for example, once a day, and because of this, your site appears on the network only after the next wave of system updates.

In addition, it is worth considering that the accessibility of the site for different users may also be different. For example, if you see that your site has already appeared on the Internet, this does not mean that absolutely any user can see it just like you. The visibility of your site depends on the Internet service provider of other users. In other words, the site may be accessible to you, but not yet to other users, and vice versa. Each provider independently sets the frequency of DNS server updates, which is why users or even you yourself will see the site online only after updating the servers.

Prescribing NS

For each domain name, you must register at least two NSs. This will provide more stable work your site in case one of the records is unavailable for some reason.

Each entry must be written especially carefully. In order to register server information in the domain, go to your Personal Area and in the domain name control panel in the “DNS server” tab, enter your data.

As we said earlier, your data will appear online with a delay, so there is no need to panic ahead of time, but just wait until the DNS server is updated again.

Speeding up the process

In order to speed up the processing of your domain and get started with it quickly, there is one way you can do this. You need to enter the line xox.oxo.xox.oxo.sampledomain.ru (xox.oxo is your IP and your personal domain) in host file, which is located in your OS. Way to this file for Windows it looks like this.

You can add an entry at the bottom of the file. This will allow you not to rely on updating the provider's server records.

Assigning DNS Records

To provide normal work domain name, you are required to set certain DNS records for it. Below we will consider the types of such records.

  • A-type record – Designation of the IP address of the node. Used to tie your . Example entry: * IN A 87.12.xox.oxo. , where * is your domain.
  • MX record type – IP address designation mail server. Applies when delivering/sending mail to your domain mailbox.
  • CNAME record type – Used when assigning an alias to a host to shorten the name or simply to associate the host with some function.
  • NS record type – Used to delegate a domain name, as well as to connect your domain with hosting.

So, these are the main records necessary for carrying out processes such as linking your domain with hosting, setting up domain name mail agents and other important processes.

Pickuphost rating

A domain name is absolutely impossible to imagine without virtual hosting. These two concepts always go hand in hand. Therefore, if you are looking for a reliable hosting company with free domain name, the Pickuphost rating is exactly the place where you can analyze the hosting services market and choose the best offer for yourself. Please note that a certain number of hosting providers. This can reduce your expenses a little and allow you to spend the savings, for example.

DNS server is extremely useful opportunity secure own computer from malicious sites. The process seems difficult for beginners, but in reality everything is much simpler, and the procedure for installing a DNS server will not take much time.

DNS is an acronym derived from Domain Name System. WITH in English this translates into Russian as “Domain Name System” changing them into IP addresses. And the DNS server stores the corresponding addresses in the database.

The work is carried out in this way: the browser, going to the site, contacts the DNS server to find out the desired address. The Server identifies the site, sends a request to it, and sends the received response back to the user.

How to find out if the DNS server is enabled on your computer

The current DNS server settings are determined as follows:

  1. “Control Panel” -> “Network and Internet” -> “View network status and tasks.” Select your network connection, go to the “General” panel, then go to properties.
  2. Go to the properties of “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”.
  3. Open the "General" tab. If the option to use the following DNS server addresses is activated, it means it is in working mode.

Repeat the previous steps, activate “Use DNS server”. After this, you will need to specify a primary DNS server, and then a secondary one.

How to configure/change DNS

When changing or additional settings you don't need to do much. You must use the window that was opened earlier and go to the “Advanced” item. Here the detailed adjustment of access to DNS servers is carried out. In Windows 7, you can configure all this yourself. Therefore, the question of how to change the DNS server yourself will not cause problems.

DNS suffixes are also available for management. The average user does not need them. This setting, which helps to conveniently share resources, was created for providers.

On a wi-fi router

When using a router, you must set its IP address in the DNS options. To perform these manipulations, you will need DNS relay and DHCP server enabled.

The router interface is designed for verification and subsequent detailed settings. First you need to check the DNS in the WAN port. DNS relay is activated in the LAN port settings.

On the computer

Setting up a DNS server in Windows 10 is similar to the same situation in earlier versions OS. First you need to select the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” properties. Go to additional options and configure the list of servers.

Setting up a DNS server on a computer and on a laptop is the same.

On a tablet

Depending on the installed operating system, the actions differ somewhat, but they all have the following points in common:

  • Open the “Wi-Fi” menu located in “Settings”.
  • Go to the properties of the current Internet connection.
  • Click “Change network”, then “Show additional parameters”.
  • Scroll to the DNS servers item, then register them.

On a smartphone

Since now there is not much difference between the operating systems of a phone and a tablet, to set up the necessary DNS servers, it is enough to know the instructions described above.

Possible errors and how to fix them

Problems with the Internet occur when incorrect settings DNS servers, including when they unexpectedly fail.

What to do if the server is not responding or is not detected

Most often, this problem occurs when the server is disconnected or the settings are lost. To do this, open the “Control Panel”, go to “System and Security”, then “Administration”. Click on “Services”, find “DNS Client” and double-click on it. The status bar indicates the command “Running”. Otherwise you need to select automatic type launch from the drop-down list above.

If the service is running but the error still appears, there are server problems. First, it is better to change the DNS server addresses according to the above instructions. However, it is still possible to reinstall the drivers network card, check your Internet connection and ask your provider about possible technical problems.

Doesn't resolve names correctly

If this error occurs, you need to check the correctness of your DNS server settings. It’s better to simply change the DNS server address to get rid of the problem.

Problems are also possible on the operator’s servers, and the problem is solved in the same way - by changing the DNS.

For the inexperienced user, there is a list of high-quality and free servers:

Addresses: 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4

Like all Google services, performs its tasks efficiently, but has a known disadvantage - it collects and stores user statistics. Despite this, the server does not have any access to personal data, so there is no need to worry about security.

If you want to learn more about server work, there is official documentation on the information site.

OpenDNS

Addresses: 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220

A popular server due to the presence of a wide range of filters and protection against theft of personal data. Basic functions are free, but it is possible to purchase premium access, which allows you to create a “locked network environment” and increase connection speed.

DNS.WATCH

Addresses: 84.200.69.80; 84.200.70.40

Does not require registration to use, provides a more serious level. The only negative is the low speed.

Norton ConnectSafe

Addresses: 199.85.126.10; 199.85.127.10

It also does not “ask” for pre-registration and securely stores user data. Created by the developers Norton antivirus, without requiring additional advertising.

Level3 DNS

Addresses: 4.2.2.1; 4.2.2.2

Suitable not only for personal use, but also for corporate purposes. Fully free resource, ranks third in global popularity.

Comodo Secure DNS

Addresses: 8.26.56.26; 8.20.247.20

The basic version is free, but some cash it is possible to purchase large quantities useful services. Both paid and free options provides reliable protection data.

OpenNIC DNS

Addresses: you should go to the project website, it will select the best ones depending on the user’s location.

Due to its huge coverage, it allows you to conveniently explore the Internet anywhere in the world.

DHCP server: what is it and what are its features

Most suitable for meshes with large quantity computers due to the transfer of their network settings to all connected devices.

Such a server allows the administrator to specify a range of server hosts and avoid wasting a lot of time on detailed optimization.

It only works with IP address settings and the addresses themselves.

Conclusion

The primary task of DNS servers is to transfer an IP address. Servers from other companies, some of which are described above, can speed up and greatly facilitate Internet surfing. However, it does not require painstaking setup, and many errors can be resolved by using another server.

Today I’ll tell you about something I recently encountered - changing the NSserver. This topic will be useful for those guys who do not sit still, and sometimes, at least once a year, “move” from one hoster to another.

So, in this post I will talk about how to change the NSserver.

Hi all.

Here's what will be included in this post:

  • theoretical material on the topic of this post: hosting, domain, NSserver.
  • Why is it necessary to change the NSserver?
  • how to find out your NSserver?
  • changing NSserver in TimeWeb hosting
  • video instructions for changing NSserver

But, before I begin the story, I would like to provide here a little theoretical material + talk about why I needed to carry out this event.

To begin with, I will talk about some concepts that will appear here in the post.

Theoretical material on the topic of this post: hosting, domain, NS server

Hosting is a company that takes your website or blog (resource) and places it on its servers. Thus, server data can be located anywhere and have a number of different characteristics, such as: speed, amount of free disk space, number of databases, etc.

Those. according to these basic characteristics, they are all different and based on these numbers, we can choose one or another hoster. In addition to these basic characteristics, there are a number of others, namely: the adequacy of the support service, the speed of response of the support service, pricing policy...

In the example I considered, we will be talking about two hosting companies: Timeweb And AdminVPS

I used the services of the first company for exactly 2 years and was always satisfied with the speed of response of the service technical support, bye... Do you know this phrase: the best is the enemy of the good? So, I thought so until I met AdminVPS technical support.

The answers here are almost instantaneous. It would seem - what a trifle, they will answer you in 3 minutes or 30... But no, as it turned out, size matters))) Okay, let's move on.

A domain is essentially your “mailing” address for your resource. Quite a lot depends on his choice. “Whatever you call the boat, that’s how it will float.” I will not pour “from empty to empty” again here. I wrote in detail about what a domain is and what rules need to be followed so as not to mess things up.

Be sure to read this article.

NSserver is the IP or address of the server on which the domain records are located. Those. Knowing this information, we can easily determine who services a particular resource.

I think it's clear. In any case, we will talk about this in more detail below.

Why is it necessary to change the NS server?

This is perhaps one of the main issues that I am ready to discuss in this post. As I already said, I worked with one hoster for two years. There were a minimum of problems and, in fact, I was happy with everything.

Later, in one of the competitions, I won access to an annual access to one of the hosters - AdminVPS. In other words, I could post all my resources (of which there are 4) for free on whole year. After studying the information on the Internet, I came to the conclusion that this hoster, although young, is already trustworthy.

In Russia - mother, more than two years, and in Europe -... I don’t know, in short. Servers are located throughout Europe, so I hope that we will work fruitfully with each other.

AdminVPS - is this so?)))

So here it is. Having contacted the technical support service, I asked to transfer all my data from one server to another. This was all done within 2 hours.

And yesterday, I was surprised that my blog did not work: a 403 error was displayed (in my opinion), which read: “Forbidden” or in other words “Hitler kaput”. By the way, in addition to this, I receive SMS messages from Yandex Metrica on my phone if my sites are not available for some reason.

It's very convenient. I recommend setting up Metrica for such alerts. Who needs to be told about how to do this - write in the comments, I will answer, I will help.

So here it is. The reason was that although they transferred my data from one server (old hoster) to another (new hoster), I forgot to register new address NSservers. Those. The following situation turned out: the blog data is both here and there, and the NSserver address is the old one, at which service has ended.

I had to put 10 rubles on my balance in order to continue servicing the sites for a few days.

Having changed NS servers yesterday, I am still “sitting” on the old hosting. This is due to the fact that changing these names does not happen instantly; it usually takes from 2 to 72 hours. Please take this into account.

Therefore, to the question: Why change NSservers? - you can quite reasonably answer: they need to be changed if you change hosting and this must be done in advance.

How to find out your NS server?

I have four main domains. And it just so happened that I bought them from three completely different registrars: TimeWeb acted as an intermediary, 2domains.ru and r01.ru

Now, I gave you this list so easily and simply, but just yesterday, I couldn’t figure out where and when I registered each domain. The fact is that we must register NSservers on the domain side. Those. we will need to log into the admin panel of the service where we purchased this domain and change the necessary data there.

So let's begin our investigation.

We'll leave Timeweb for later. We will talk about it a little below.

Go to the website http://whois.ru/ and enter your domain name in a single line. This way we will find out the domain name registrar.

After you manage to log into the admin panel, a list of your domains will be available to you.

In this field we enter new NSserver addresses, which can be found either from technical support, or they will be sent to you by email during registration with a new hoster.

Thus, by changing the addresses and clicking “Next” we will be forced to wait some time until the data in all services is updated. Only in this case can we be sure that we have “moved” to a new hosting.

Changing the NS server in TimeWeb hosting

In the distant, distant times, when the trees were very large, I bought my domain for a blog and I thought that I did it through the Timeweb company... But after dancing with the tambourine that this company gave me and writing a letter to the technical support service, I realized: that he was not entirely right.

The fact is that through the Timeweb company I bought one of my domains, but this is not the domain of my blog. The point is that in order to change the names of the NSservers that you purchased from this hoster, you will not be able to do this from the admin panel.

I found this out from technical support. To do this you need to go to the following address: http://timeweb.myorderbox.com/customer

Once inside, the following panel will be available to our eyes:

We click there “ManageOrders” - “List/SearchOrders” - we will see a list of domains available to us that we purchased through this hosting.

At the same time, we will change the server addresses for this domain: rinitu.net. Click on it and see the following window:

Here we click on NameServers and in the window that appears we register new addresses, then click on “Update” and you’re done.

This is what we do with all the addresses that we have.

Those. The order is as follows: we find out through which registrar we bought the domain, go to the admin panel and change the NSserver address, which we learn in advance from technical support or from a message on email and in a day (approximately) we celebrate housewarming.

What else do we need to do?

After these steps, we need to check which NSserver is ultimately registered for our domain. This is easy to check using the website: http://ru.myip.ms/

All that remains is to wait for the changes to take effect.

That's all for me. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments and we’ll figure it out together.

This article is not specific and detailed instructions on all the nuances with NS servers, I’ll just tell you about a small personal experience with solutions to issues specific examples. Every webmaster encounters similar situations when it was necessary to register NS, create, change, etc. - this is part of working with domains and hosting. For experienced people, everything is already quite simple, but for beginners, it is sometimes not so easy to figure it out. Therefore, I prepared a couple of stories from life, so to speak.

So, first, a few terms. At all DNS— the domain name system, roughly speaking, sets the correspondence between the domain name and the real IP address of the site, you enter the domain and get to the desired address. For each domain, after registration, you can specify different DNS records that help the site to be found on the World Wide Web:

  • Record A(address record) - indicates the IP address of the hosting where our site is located.
  • MX Record(post address) - determines the IP address of the post server for the domain, usually matches the A record.
  • NS entry(name server) - points to the DNS server for a specific domain.

Let's look at these nuances using the example of working with the Webnames domain registrar. For any domain, we have 2 options for specifying the correspondence between the domain and hosting:

1. Indication of A and MX records that will contain the hosting IP with our site:

In this case, this correspondence will be “stored” in the registrar’s NS records (webnames). Therefore, when creating hosting accounts, you can use the NS registrar - in in this case these are ns1.nameself.com and ns2.nameself.com. In this case, in the DNS server tab in your account you will find:

2. In the same section of the DNS management for domain menu, you can also specify the NS of the hosting server, for example:

Now, in fact, the entire responsibility for setting the correspondence between the IP address and your domain lies with the company that provides these DNS. In this case, it is CoolVDS hosting. There, by the way, you can buy a dedicated server in the USA, which is good for MFA sites. In order to “connect” a domain there, you need to contact technical support by email [email protected]: in the subject of the letter write “domain for your_server.coolvds.com”, where in the text you indicate the domain, ip and again the server name, for example:

mydomain.com:193.333.555.777:your_name.coolvds.com

It may be a little confusing, but only the first time. Other hosting companies may ask you which DNS to use when purchasing hosting. For example, this is done in Hostpro, and if you choose to use their DNS, then for your domain you will simply need to specify their NS servers - master.hostsila.com and slave.hostsila.net without any A and MX records.

In the same way, most normal domain registrars have the 2 options that I mentioned above. Another example is Getnic.name. Here you can use the service free management DNS or specify third-party NS servers.

To do this, select a domain and go to it account— here you can specify the existing NS of another hoster or click on the “DNS management” link. In the second case, you can set A, MX and everything necessary records for the domain and use free NS from getnic.name.

Creating your own NS records

For some of my projects I bought virtual servers Hostpro is located in Ukraine, the support is adequate and very friendly. After purchasing, you are given 2 IP addresses - a primary and an additional one, as well as a request to register an NS of the form ns1.mydomain.ru and ns2.mydomain.ru.

For webnames, go again to the “Zone Management” section for your domain, where we add necessary records type NS:

For the Ukrainian registrar iname.ua, this is done in a similar way: add an NS type record and indicate the issued IPs.

Now for new registered domains, the sites of which are located on your server, you can specify not only the A record with a link to the IP, but also simply define it through your NS - ns1.mydomain.ru and ns2.mydomain.ru. By the way, finally, a link to an article about how you can avoid waiting for DNS updates - edit the hosts file, after which you can start working on your project while the global DNS has not yet been updated (a matter of a few hours).

This is how it turned out to be a small educational program DNS management, creating NS, A, MX records for domains. Perhaps you work with the same registrars and hosting providers, then this article should be a useful hint if any questions arise (especially for beginners). Although, in principle, of course, you can always contact the technical support of both the domain registrar and where you buy hosting - good companies that respect themselves and their clients should help, it’s better not to deal with others.

P.S. You can now buy a book online, go to a special online bookstore, choose a product, pay with a credit card and receive delivery.

In the vast majority of cases, errors that lead to blocking access to the Internet are in some way related to the IP and DNS settings. What’s most interesting is that this happens with any type of connection, such as Wi-Fi, or the usual Internet over a network wire. If inappropriate values are specified in these settings, or the method of setting them is chosen incorrectly, then connecting to the World Wide Web is not possible.

Let's explore various options checking these settings, and in addition - methods of activation automatic receipt IP addresses and some other parameters. In principle, this kind of information has already been provided in previous publications, but in this case it would be advisable to carry out more detailed review. This information will be very useful to many users, especially those who are new to network settings. After all, we will study settings for well-known operating systems: Windows XP, 7, 8, 10.

Errors with incorrectly specified IP and DNS during wi-fi or network connection

Typically, connecting to the Internet is done in one of two ways - with using local network or wireless. In the event that use wireless internet not available due to lack wi-fi adapter or router, then there is only one option left - connecting via a local network. Basically for work this moment is not fundamentally important, you just need to know that in any case the IP and DNS must be set (or the option to automatically obtain them by default is set).

The most likely option is that problems arise after an initially incorrect IP has already been registered on the computer for a specific connection. It is possible that it will remain from the previous provider, or for you it is the case self installation other parameters. That is, in fact, we have an Internet connection using an incorrect static IP via Wi-Fi, as a result, an undesirable result is guaranteed. It is for this reason that wireless router all these parameters will be incorrect and he will try “with all his might” to provide the necessary ones. However, this will not happen due to the fact that the ability to receive network addresses by default (it is logical to assume that the computer will not accept the router settings).

This is how the connection error occurs with “ World Wide Web" Moreover, this problem occurs not only with a Wi-Fi connection, but also often when trying to carry out the usual cable connection with the network for the same reasons. In this case, the smartest thing to do would be to configure the parameters of the automatic option for receiving settings, as already mentioned above.

Cases of setting up a network according to specified static parameters

However, other situations also happen. For example, in the case where the router, or your network provider, is not able to automatically provide IP data and there is need for input manually . And, when connected to the Internet, the computer is programmed to receive parameters in automatic mode. In fact, he is waiting for the provider to provide IP and DNS data for the connection, but this wait will not be successful. This is why there is difficulty connecting to the network.
The solution to the issue in this case will be to indicate the parameters needed to connect to the network in manual mode. You can find out this information from your chosen provider.

Common mistakes when setting up network parameters

In contrast to the type of operating system installed and the criteria for connecting to the network, it is customary to distinguish several types of the most common errors. You may often encounter the “No Internet access” error. In Windows 8, a message appears indicating “Restricted”, that is, the Internet is unavailable (although there is a possibility of encountering other connection errors).

It may happen that the PC begins to endlessly receive the same IP address, which also leads to errors and makes it impossible to connect to the network.

In addition, if the DNS address is specified incorrectly, error 105 occurs when visiting some sites. The solution to this issue is similar: install automatic detection network addresses. Or you will need to specify a static address.

Setting up automatic IP and DNS on Windows xp/7/8/10

But now it’s time to familiarize yourself with the process of setting up IP and DNS addresses. Let's start studying with the well-known operating room Windows system 10.

  • To begin, you need to right-click on the network icon located in the system notification area. After this, you will need to go to the “Network Control Center”.

  • Next, open the “Changes adapter settings” tab. After this you will see a section containing all installed network adapters, to which you have access, Here we select the appropriate connection method - in this option This is a connection to the Internet via a local network. Click right click mouse over the “Ethernet” icon and in the proposed menu click on “Properties”.

  • We look for a line in the protocols field with the following inscription - “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” - mark this item and click on the “Properties” button below.
Next, a menu appears through which it is possible to regulate the automatic determination of the IP/DNS address. In addition, it would be realistic to register all this and specify it manually. We record everything necessary changes by clicking on the "OK" tab.

After the reboot we connect to the network.

Instructions for obtaining an automatic IP address and DNS in Windows 7, 8

For Windows 8/8.1, everything is done completely similarly to the above diagram.

  • Click on the network icon from the notification panel, go to the “Network Control Center”, select “change settings for the adapter”. After selecting the appropriate connection option, go to “Properties” by clicking on the adapter being used.
  • Click on the properties button in the line (TCP/IPv4), set the necessary parameters for IP and DNS or, if necessary, switch them to the default installation mode. Let's save.

Network access after reboot

Setting up automatic IP and DNS acquisition on Windows XP

Setting up on this OS is also carried out in a somewhat similar way.

  • Through the “Start” menu, the “Control Panel” opens and in it you need to select “Network and Internet Connections”.
  • Of all available connections select the one you need and right-click on it. Select the “Properties” tab from the proposed menu.
  • Likewise previous instructions select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and below click on the “Properties” tab. After that, we do everything the same way as indicated in the two above methods. We record the data.
  • Reboot and check connection to the World Wide Web. Agree, there is nothing complicated about this!

Configuring IP and DNS on Windows xp/7/8/10 manually

In the Internet settings properties “Ip version 4” (instructions for opening the section, described above), set the data as in the figure: IP address and default gateway are selected depending on the settings of the router or provider - 192.168.0(1).1 (but may be different), where the last digit (………1) must differ from the router address (………2-255).

  • Preferred/alternative DNS use standard (Google): 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4.
  • After clicking the “OK” button, restart your PC and try to check the Internet.
