How to choose a portable battery. Well, now let's move on to the tests

Recently I had an unpleasant but quite typical experience. modern man, case. I forgot to charge my iPhone and it treacherously turned off at the very right moment. As a result, the planned meetings did not take place, and in general, the whole day passed in a feeling of some kind of helplessness. In this article, I will not reflect on the topic of our dependence on gadgets, and give advice on how to manage without a phone. Instead, let's talk about accessories to avoid such unpleasant situations.

Just recently thinking about increasing the time battery life For my phone, I considered several options for cases with a built-in battery. At the time they seemed like a completely reasonable solution to me. They do not increase much iPhone size and at the same time have a sufficiently high capacity, which allows tripling the battery life. But at some point they had to be abandoned. The fact is that the iPhone is not the only gadget in my bag that requires periodic recharging. In this regard, it was necessary to more practical solution, namely an external battery (I prefer to call such devices external batteries), equipped with a USB output and a set of adapters that make it compatible with almost any type of modern gadget.

In this article I will talk about two new models of iconBIT external batteries, featuring a new miniature design, relatively large capacity, a set of necessary adapters and very reasonable price. This makes them interesting for both charging my iPhone and other gadgets that can be found in my bag.

Design features...

I'll start with the most unusual battery I've ever tested so far. It was called iconBIT FTB2600LED. The dimensions of the battery (102x23.5x23.5 mm) and weight of about 70 grams allow you to carry it with your phone right in your shirt pocket. iconBIT FTB2600LED is made in a beautiful white body with a chrome rim on one side, where two USB port.

The Micro USB port is traditionally used to charge the battery, while regular USB The port is used to connect external devices. This port has an output current of 1A. This makes the battery compatible with most gadgets, and also allows it to be used to power devices that are not equipped with a battery, for example, miniature 3G/4G routers or hard drives.

On the opposite side of the battery case there is a built-in flashlight. It consists of four super-bright LEDs, which are bright enough not only to illuminate a keyhole. With its help, you can easily go down an unlit staircase, inspect the contents of a car trunk, illuminate a tent, and even read a book. All in all, a very useful addition.

To turn on the battery, use the button next to which there is an indicator of the charge level of the built-in battery.

Pressing the button once turns on the battery and allows you to charge external devices, pressing this button again turns on the flashlight. In this mode, iconBIT FTB2600LED continues to charge the external device. A subsequent press of the button turns off the flashlight but leaves the battery on, allowing you to continue charging external device. Another click turns off the battery. Please note that if the battery is connected to any gadget, you cannot turn it off using the button. You must first turn off the external device.

The second battery, called iconBITFTB5200U, has a very similar design, but has slightly larger dimensions (92x42x23.5 mm) and weighs about 125 grams. This battery does not have a flashlight; its main feature is its large capacity of 5200mAh in a relatively small size.

Despite its slightly larger size, the iconBIT FTB5200U battery turned out to be no less convenient for everyday use. The shape of its body is so thoughtful and comfortable that it allows you to comfortably carry it in your hand along with your phone. On the side of the case there are two USB ports, a battery power button and a battery charge level indicator. The Micro USB port is traditionally used to charge the battery, and the regular USB port is used to connect an external device. To turn on the battery, just press the button. It also turns off the battery, but only if there is no external device connected to it.

The equipment of both models is identical. It includes a special spring cable. On one side the cable is equipped with a regular USB connector. On the other side there is a connector to which various adapters are connected.

Five adapters (iPhone/iPod/iPad, Samsung, Nokia, MiniUSB and MicroUSB) allow you to use batteries to charge almost any type of gadget. If none of the adapters are suitable for your gadget, you can always use the cable included with the device.

Additionally, both models are equipped with a small bag in which you can conveniently store not only the battery itself, but also full set adapters and cable.

The standard cable is used not only to connect external devices, but also to charge the batteries themselves. In this case, you need a MicroUSB adapter that connects to the corresponding battery port, while a regular USB port is connected to a network power source equipped with a USB port with an output current of at least 0.5-0.8A or to a computer USB port.

This solution is considered the most convenient and safe. On the one hand, it will not allow you to make mistakes when connecting the battery to external devices or to network charging, and on the other hand, it allows you to connect any external devices.

Real possibilities of external batteries...

Having considered design features Both models of external batteries, it's time to talk about their real capabilities. I would like to start with the quality of all connectors and connections. From personal experience I can say that this is very important. In this sense, both battery models did not cause any comments from me. Moreover, the quality of the connectors is so high that I can easily use my iPhone with the iconBIT FTB2600LED and iconBIT FTB5200U battery attached to it without any problems. You can even shake the phone, the battery will not fall off, as the following video confirms.

When choosing an external battery, few people pay attention to such a parameter as battery life. To study this issue, I used two external power supplies with an output current of 1A and 2.1A. I did not notice any difference in battery charging time depending on the external source. The iconBIT FTB2600LED battery takes just over 3 hours to charge, while the iconBIT FTB5200U takes 10 hours and 35 minutes to charge. This is quite normal for devices that use USB charging port. Typically, to reduce charging time in batteries large capacity, the manufacturer uses a separate power source with a higher voltage and charging current, but in this case it is necessary to sacrifice versatility.

The next question that interests everyone who is interested in these battery models is: how long will their charge last? The iconBIT FTB2600LED is based on a 2600mAh battery. In theory, one battery charge is enough for about one and a half to two charges. modern smartphone with batteries from 1000 to 1700mAh. Simple phones with a battery capacity of 800mAh, it can be charged up to three times. In practice, I was able to fully charge my iPhone 4 once. This took only 2 hours 35 minutes. The second time the phone battery was charged to 80%. This is enough to forget about the outlet for 2-3 days. Excellent result for such a small and lightweight battery aimed at everyday use.

The capacity of iconBIT FTB2600LED is sufficient not only for charging phones and smartphones. It can also be recommended for charging some ultra-thin 7” tablet models. In order to reduce the thickness and weight of the tablet, manufacturers use batteries with a capacity of 2000 mAh. For example, two recently tested models of ultra-thin tablets were equipped with 2400 mAh and 3000 mAh batteries. Tests show that such a battery lasts for 2-4 hours. This is clearly not enough for full use Android tablet during the day. The iconBIT FTB2600LED battery will fully charge the tablet's battery, allowing you to triple the battery life of the tablet. Why three times? Everything is very simple. It will take approximately 3 hours to charge the tablet. During this time, you will be able to fully use it as if it were connected to a wall charger. After charging the battery, you disconnect the battery and use the tablet for another 3 hours. Isn't it great?!

The iconBIT FTB5200U battery has a capacity of 5200 mAh, which allows you to expand the capabilities offline use various devices. For example, it lasts for almost four charges of my iPhone. This means that I can actively use the phone without being plugged in for 5 days. In my opinion, it’s very cool, especially if you remember that this battery model weighs only 125 grams. When using the battery with ultra-thin 7" tablet models, its capacity is enough for 1.5-2 charges or one full charge for models equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. In practice, a tablet equipped with a 3000 mAh battery is fully charged within 4 hours 25 minutes. In this case, the remaining energy will be enough for another 70% charge. This means that you can forget about the outlet for 23 hours of continuous video viewing or Internet access.

I was very interested to see how long one iconBIT FTB5200U charge would last when powering an ASUS WL-330N3G mobile router with a USB 3G modem connected to it and when connected to a third generation iPad.

It's no secret that any model of mobile router with a built-in battery lasts 2.5-4 hours. This is clearly not enough for use throughout the day. The FTB5200U battery provides up to 11 hours of continuous operation of the ASUS WL-330N3G mobile router with a connected 3G modem and active Wi-Fi connection.

With the third generation iPad, things weren't so simple. To charge it, a power source with a current of 2.1A is required. The output current of iconBIT FTB5200U is only 1A. As a result, the tablet consumes energy faster than it charges. If you turn off the tablet's power, you can charge it to 21% in a few hours. In general, if you are choosing a charger specifically for the iPad 3, I recommend the model.

Finishing the conversation about the real capabilities of the batteries in question, I would like to draw your attention to the charging circuit used. Both models do not support automatic detection of the end of charging of an external device. This uses what I call a “socket in a pocket” circuit. Its essence is that the battery will supply energy until you turn it off or until it is completely discharged. If you don’t want to waste extra energy, you will have to periodically check the gadget’s charge level.

A few words about the price...

In general, as far as prices are concerned, Lately iconBIT never ceases to amaze me with its democratic approach. Take, for example, the recently reviewed tablets and . The first tablet is equipped IPS screen 9.7" in size, and today you can buy it for 6,900 rubles, which is comparable to the prices of some models of 7" tablets with regular TN matrix. The second tablet has a 7” screen, but it is based on a dual-core processor. It costs less than many single-core tablets, only 4,800 rubles. The situation is similar with batteries. According to Yandex.Market, the junior model iconBIT FTB2600LED can be purchased for about 950 rubles. At the same time, more expensive “analogs” have a smaller capacity, larger dimensions and weight, as well as less rich functionality and equipment. As for the iconBIT FTB5200U model, you can buy it for 1,450 rubles, which is about 2-2.5 times cheaper than “similar” models with a capacity of 5000-6000 mAh.

Conclusion...

iconBIT presented excellent models of external batteries that are ideal for both everyday use in urban conditions, and during trips to nature or on a business trip. Personally, I liked the younger model iconBIT FTB2600LED more. At a very small size and weight that allows me to carry it with my phone in my shirt pocket, it has enough capacity to charge my iPhone 4 throughout the day. Very useful addition Turned out to be a built-in flashlight. But the best thing about this model is its price, less than 1,000 rubles.

The second model iconBIT FTB5200U turned out to be no less interesting, especially for those of us who need to recharge not only the phone, but also an ultra-thin tablet. Today, thanks to lower prices, such tablets are becoming especially popular. They are replacing the wretched e-readers with TFT screen and portable media players. With all the advantages of these tablets, they have insufficiently capacious batteries, which limits the battery life to 2-4 hours, and in this sense, the compact and lightweight FTB5200U battery can become an indispensable assistant. My tests show that this battery can extend battery life to 23 hours. Isn't that impressive?!

The article will tell you how you can buy a smartphone with a good battery.

The battery capacity is the most important characteristic smartphone. Therefore, if a smartphone has a good battery, then it will most likely be a good smartphone.

Why is battery power the most main characteristic smartphone?

From a technical point of view (in terms of its “stuffing”), a smartphone is identical to a tablet. Which means the same level of energy consumption as a tablet. Moreover, the level of energy consumption of a smartphone can be even higher than that of a tablet, due to the fact that the smartphone must be constantly connected to the cellular network. Namely, the work of adapters wireless communication(cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth) in second place, after the screen, in terms of energy consumption. Moreover, it is also important that today people very often use a smartphone to view social media or websites. And this also increases the battery consumption of the smartphone - the display works for a long time, it works WiFi adapter or the cellular adapter is in data mode.

And such requirements for long-term autonomy are what make you buy a smartphone with a powerful battery.

With all this, the physical dimensions and weight of a smartphone are approximately two (or even more) times smaller than that of a tablet (meaning tablets with a diagonal of 7-8 inches).

And the size of the device imposes a limit on battery capacity. For the simple reason that the capacity of modern batteries depends on their physical size and weight.

That is, the smaller the smartphone, the weaker the battery.

Therefore, for cheap, and for many budget, and even expensive smartphones, one day of work without recharging may be unattainable. At first glance, there is nothing wrong with this, because you can charge the battery.

The problem is that batteries have a limited number of charge-discharge cycles. Cheap batteries usually last about 300 cycles, good (expensive) ones can last up to 500 cycles.

And if you have a cheap Chinese smartphone that needs to be charged every day, then in less than a year its battery will “die” and you will have to change it. And these are additional costs. And time to find a suitable battery. Or maybe such a battery won’t be able to be found at all. And then you will have to buy a new smartphone.

But the problem of quickly dying batteries can also be caused by expensive smartphone. Even if on a smartphone good battery, which can withstand 500 charge cycles, but its capacity is small and you have to charge it every day, it will last less than two years.

So battery capacity is the most important characteristic for a smartphone.

Models with a capacity of less than 1500 mAh (milliamps per hour) can be excluded from the list of candidates altogether.

At the same time, it is important to understand one feature - for cheap and budget Chinese smartphones, the declared battery capacity usually does not correspond to the real one. The specifications of such a smartphone may indicate a battery capacity of, for example, 1500 mAh, but in reality its capacity will be noticeably less, it’s good if it’s at the level of 1200 – 1300 mAh. And if it is written that the battery capacity is 2000 mAh, in reality it could be, for example, 1500 mAh.

There is even such an ironic expression - “Chinese watts”. It appeared a long time ago, in relation to cheap Chinese blocs nutrition. But this expression fully applies to cheap Chinese batteries.

Battery capacity in cheap Chinese smartphones, you can safely reduce the percentage by 20-25.

There is one more unpleasant feature cheap chinese batteries. They die quickly. They have a shorter charging cycle life. They have a higher number of defects. As a result, when buying a cheap Chinese smartphone, there is a high probability that in a little over a year, or even earlier, you will end up with a dead battery.

Smartphone with good battery

Batteries are considered the most durable Samsung smartphones. Sony and Nokia are not far behind them (now these are Microsoft smartphones). In addition to durability, smartphones from these manufacturers have honest battery capacity. If Samsung or Sony indicate in the specifications of a model a battery capacity of 1700 mAh, then you can be sure that it will be that way. There is a very high probability that an honest and reliable battery will be in smartphones from such manufacturers as HTC, Asus, Acer, Lenovo.

Chinese smartphones costing more than $200 can also have good batteries.

Smartphone with a powerful battery

There are no standards here, but I think that a battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh or higher can be called large.

However, you need to understand that such a smartphone will be either large in width and length (screen diagonal 5.5 or 6 inches). Or, with a screen size of 4-5 inches, it will be a thick smartphone - 10 mm thick or more. And the weight, accordingly, will also be at least 140 - 150 grams.

There are no miracles. There are no small and capacious batteries yet. So when choosing a smartphone with a large battery, you are automatically choosing a smartphone that is large in size and weight. This size can be distributed in different ways. Or thin (7-8 mm), but with a large width and length. Or small width, but thicker (9-12 mm).

And don’t forget about the cost of the smartphone and the manufacturer.

If Chinese company“Uncle Liao” offers a smartphone for $100 with a 4000 mAh battery, then with a 99% probability it will not be 4000 mAh at all. Or it will be an “overclocked” battery, in which the capacity is increased by raising the voltage to 4.35 volts and such a battery will not last long. Read the article Why Lithium Batteries Destroy, it describes how the Chinese are increasing the capacity of batteries.

Removable or non-removable battery

In the last couple of years, many models with a non-separable body have begun to be produced. That is, of course, he understands it, but with the help of tools. Accordingly, the battery in such a smartphone cannot be easily replaced on your own. And this may mean an increase in the cost of owning such a smartphone. If you have to replace the battery, you will have to contact specialists and pay money for it.

Reduced battery consumption

Regardless of the platform (Android, Windows or iPhone), the main battery hogs are:

  • Display.
  • Wireless adapters - WiFi, cellular in data transfer mode (3G, 4G) and Bluetooth.

Thus, reducing battery consumption means reducing the use of these cells. If you don’t watch videos on your smartphone and use the Internet as little as possible, then the battery life on one charge can even be several days (depending on the battery capacity and system settings).

A few tips that will allow you to reduce battery consumption:

  • Always keep WiFi, Bluetooth and Data turned off. Turn them on only when you need them and turn them off immediately after use.
  • Reduce display brightness.
  • Always delete unused applications from random access memory. The list of applications loaded into memory opens differently in different operating systems. B It could be separate button or long tap on the “Back” button.
  • Turn on airplane mode at night. Better yet, turn off your smartphone completely.
  • Look at the settings of your smartphone, if there is a battery saving mode, turn it on.

How to extend battery life

Above, in this article it was already written that the batteries of smartphones (as well as tablets and laptops) have limited number discharge-charge cycles.

What’s interesting is that the number of these cycles depends on the depth of battery discharge. The more discharged the battery is (before charging), the fewer charge cycles it can withstand.

If you discharge the battery completely (before turning off the smartphone), then the number of charge cycles is the lowest - good batteries have approximately 500 cycles. But if you put it on charge before the battery is completely discharged, then the number of charge cycles increases. If you start charging with 50% remaining charge, then the number of cycles increases to more than 1000. If you charge the battery with 80% remaining (20% discharge), then the number of cycles increases even more. However, such frequent charging (at 80% or 90% battery) can be inconvenient. And the total battery life in this case does not increase. Optimal option charging at 40-50 percent of battery remaining.

A few rules that will extend the life of your battery.

  • Do not charge the battery to 100%. More precisely, you need to monitor the battery voltage and not allow it to exceed 4.2 volts, which usually means less than 100% charge.
  • Do not leave a fully charged phone connected to the charger. A common mistake is to charge your phone overnight. The battery is charged in 2-3 hours, and then, already charged, remains charged for another 5 hours. The batteries have controllers that monitor the discharge and charge and automatically turn off the battery or charging. However, such a controller may fail during operation. So it's better to be safe.
  • Use only the standard charger. Better yet, charge the device from the USB port of your computer.
  • Do not keep your smartphone near heat sources; lithium-ion batteries do not like heat.

Read a separate article that details the factors that destroy a lithium battery. And in the same article there are detailed tips for extending the life of a lithium-ion battery.

Some models with a powerful battery

Microsoft Lumia 640. The battery there is not very large, only 2500 mAh. But Qualcomm processor And Windows Phone 8 and this in total gives a longer operating life of the smartphone than on the Android + Mediatek combination.

Samsung Galaxy J3. The battery there is not very large, only 2600 mAh. However, the screen there is Amoled, which, under certain settings, can “eat up” less energy than TN or IPS.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S. 4000 mAh battery and Qualcomm processor (more economical than Mediatek). The manufacturer is Chinese, but the quality is not bad. Close to the level of leading smartphone manufacturers. However, there is a drawback - the battery cannot be replaced without partially disassembling the case. This is now the case on many smartphones.

Meizu M3s mini. Battery 3000 mAh. The manufacturer is Chinese, but the quality is not bad. Close to the level of leading smartphone manufacturers. The battery is not removable - it cannot be replaced without partially disassembling the case.

ZTE Blade X3. 4000 mAh battery. Fixed.

Huawei Honor 5A. 3100 mAh battery and Qualcomm processor.

SENSEIT E400. 4000 mAh battery. However, the smartphone is from the “Chinese” category, which means it is a lottery in terms of quality. And the battery is most likely not 4000, but for example 3500 mAh or so.

Prestigio Grace Q5. Battery 3200 mAh. However, the smartphone is from the “Chinese” category, which means it is a lottery in terms of quality. And the battery is most likely not 3200, but for example 2500 mAh or so.

Philips Xenium V387. Battery 4400 mAh. However, Philips is “not the same anymore”; there are problems with quality. Overall close to “Chinese Chinese”.

More expensive:

  • Samsung Galaxy J5. Battery 3100 mAh. AND Amoled screen, which, with certain settings, can “eat up” less energy than TN or IPS.
  • Sony Xperia Z. In this series of smartphones, batteries with a capacity of 2600 mAh and above, up to 3000 mAh. The disadvantage is the high price.
  • LG X Power K220DS. Battery 4100 mAh.
  • Huawei P9 Lite
  • Huawei Honor 5C. Battery 3000 mAh. Fixed.

Chinese Chinese:

  • OUKITEL K4000. Battery 4000 mAh.
  • OUKITEL K4000 Pro. Battery 4600 mAh.
  • OUKITEL K6000 Pro. Battery 6000 mAh.
  • DOOGEE Y100 Plus. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • DOOGEE T6. Battery 6200 mAh.
  • THL T9 pro. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • THL T7. Battery 4800 mAh.
  • HOMTOM HT17 Pro. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • Gooweel M17. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • Timmy M20 pro. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • HOMTOM HT3 pro. Battery 3000 mAh.
  • HOMTOM HT5. Battery 4200 mAh.
  • HOMTOM HT5. Battery 4200 mAh.

Buying Chinese Chinese goods and even such Chinese labels as Meizu, Xiaomi, Huawei, try to find out what the voltage is on a fully charged battery of this smartphone. If the battery has a voltage of more than 4.2 volts, it will not last long, maybe a couple of years.

In order to ensure complete safety expensive electronic devices when charging using a Power Bank, this device is equipped with six protection functions:

  • from short circuit;
  • from energy overload;
  • from increased charge;
  • from overvoltage;
  • from overcharging;
  • from overheating.

The high quality of the charger's electrical circuit prevents energy loss and ensures its energy efficiency at 90%. Thus, the Power Bank battery is enough to fully charge the smartphone battery several times. Obviously, having such a device allows you to forget about situations when your mobile phone runs out of charge and turns off in the middle of the day.

How to use the device

Before you start using the Power Bank, you need to charge its battery. To do this, using the included adapter, you need to connect the device to personal computer, with the help of which charging will take place. So I did. After connecting to the computer, the device lit up led indicator, this meant that the battery had started charging. When it was fully charged, the indicator went off. The whole process lasted a little over two hours.

After this, the Power Bank can be used to recharge a smartphone or other electronic devices. To do this, you just need to connect a portable charger to them using a cable with a USB connector and wait fully charged device, this may take from one to several hours depending on the battery capacity.

A power bank can also act as a flashlight. To turn on the light, you need to press and hold the power button.

I am very glad that thanks to a friend I got this wonderful charger. I attached it to my keys and always carry it with me just in case, and it has helped me out more than once. Now I can listen to music and watch movies on my smartphone as much as I want without fear that it will run out and I will be left without connection. The device also saves me if I forget to charge my phone at home. It is very comfortable!

And the Power Bank is simply irreplaceable on various trips or on country holidays. With it I can charge my phone, camera or tablet at any time, so I don’t have to worry about getting bored without music or not being able to take a photo as a keepsake.

Hi all! My previous Power Bank was very bulky, and I decided to order myself something small and compact. The choice fell on this Power Bank with a capacity of 2600mah.

This review contains tests of real capacity and a lot of photos! For those who are interested, please follow the cut!

So, one day, wandering around various stores, I was looking for myself compact Power Bank. I saw a suitable option on Aliexpress - it costs $6, it comes without original packaging and travels without a tracking code. This proposal did not suit me. I decided to find something cheaper and better. Stumbled upon new internet store – coolicool.com, the price was $2, I was already happy, but then I saw that I would have to pay another $4 for delivery. But still, it turned out to be a little more profitable for me than Ali, because the parcel came with a track and packaging.

Delivery

After placing the order, I received the track code the very next day. They sent it to me by Malaysian post (as the Chinese began to send it very often), it went fine, with a track code. I received the parcel in about 20 days. It was an ordinary small package - there is no point in posting photos of it.

Here's what was inside:

Box:

The internal kit was not particularly impressive - the Power Bank itself, and the microUSB cable for connecting to various devices. If you wish, you can use any other cable of your own and charge products, for example, from Apple

About Power Bank

Below are a few photos of the device itself:

The body is made of nice plastic, I liked it.

The device turned out to be really very compact, smaller than I expected. For comparison, a photo with a coin.

Inside, most likely regular battery type 18650. I did not disassemble it.

The Power Bank itself is equipped with LEDs. When it is charging, the LED turns red. When it is charged and you can start using it, it starts to glow blue.

You can use it as a keychain:

Well, now let's move on to the tests:

I won't go into details, I tested a lot on different devices. Real capacity – 1000mah. I was hoping that there would be at least 2000 of the declared 2600, but in principle this will do. You can fully charge your dialer or half charge your smartphone.

Results

Overall, not bad for the money. Although I expected more. I won’t recommend it for purchase, it’s an average item. I advise anyone who needs something compact to take it.
