How to set a password on a d link modem. Entering the router settings menu

D-Link routers are very popular among users. Therefore, instructions for setting up, setting a password, solving some problems, etc. are always relevant. In this article, we will set a password for Wi-Fi on a D-Link router. I will show the whole process using the example of the D-link DIR-615 router model, which we configured in the article. In the instructions for setting up certain models, I always try to write about setting a password for the wireless network. But a general article for all D-Link models would not hurt.

Using these instructions, you can set a password on D-link DIR-300, DIR-615, DIR-320 and other models. Is that there are different versions of firmware that differ in interface. Therefore, let's consider several options.

Regarding the question of installing protection on a Wi-Fi network, then It is necessary to set a password. And preferably during the first setup. Believe me, there are many people who want to connect. And this is an extra load on the router, low connection speed, and it’s not safe. It may even be that by connecting to your network, a third party will gain access to your files. Now, if you don’t have a password right now, you can take a look. If your network has been open for a long time, then I am sure that you will see not only your devices there.

Therefore, I advise you to come up with a good password, be sure to remember it (or write it down), and protect your home network.

Instructions for setting a password for the Wi-Fi network of a D-Link router

In fact, nothing is difficult. First, go to the router settings. It is advisable to connect to the router via cable. But, if this is not possible, then you can use Wi-Fi (if any problems arise after installation, see solutions at the end of this article).

In the settings go to the tab WiFi - Security Settings (if you have an English menu, then change it to Russian). In the drop down menu Network authentication install WPA2-PSK. In field PSK encryption key enter the password that will be used to connect to your Wi-Fi network. Just come up with a more complex one than my "123456789" :) The password must be at least 8 characters.

In chapter "WPA encryption settings" We don’t change anything, we just press the button Apply.

If your control panel is different from the one I have in the screenshot above, then you can try.

If you don't want to update the software, here's another one: instructions for installing protection on D-link with older firmware (light interface) :

In settings go to the tab Configure manually.

Then, open the tab WiFi And Security Settings.

Set a password, save the settings, and reboot the router.

And also instructions for firmware with a dark interface:

Save the settings and reboot the router.

What should I do if I can’t connect to Wi-Fi after setting a password?

A very popular problem is when, after setting a password for Wi-Fi, computers, phones, tablets, and other devices do not connect to the wireless network. On a computer, this is usually a well-known error. "The network settings saved on this computer do not meet the requirements of this network", or "Windows was unable to connect to...". Mobile devices may simply not connect.

What should be done. You just need to delete the Wi-Fi network on your computer, forget it, and reconnect with the password that you set in the router settings. It's very easy to do. I wrote about this in detail in this article:. If you have Windows 10, then see the instructions.

On mobile devices, you just need to press on the network, hold it for a while, and select Delete from the menu.

Set a password for Wi-Fi recommended for every wireless Internet user, because many people prefer not to spend money on network equipment and the neighbor’s unprotected one is enough for them wi-fi connections. In this case, your Internet speed will drop significantly. Well, this is certainly not the only reason why you need to set a strong password on Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi) net.

Over an unsecured network, they can get into the settings of your router, set a password, and then you will have to reset the settings and re-establish the Internet connection. Well, if you don’t know how to do this, you will have to call a computer technician who needs to be paid for the work, so you will remain in the red. And of course, without password protection, your data is vulnerable to experienced scammers, this also needs to be kept in mind.

Set a password for Wi-Fi.

The Wi-Fi password will be set on the router TP-link model tl-wr740n. Basically, on all wireless equipment devices, the setup process is similar, with minor changes, so using this example, you can try to configure other models of network devices. In case you have forgotten your password and cannot remember it, check out the article.

First you need to get into the settings of our router. There are special IP addresses for this. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 , which work on any Wi-Fi equipment and provide access to settings. They can also be viewed on the back of the router. Now open any browser, enter the IP address in the address bar, in my case it is 192.168.0.1 and press enter. Now you need to specify a login and password to access the settings, by default this is admin they can also be seen on the back of the router.

In the window that opens, go through the tabs wireless mode -> wireless protection. Place a marker opposite the item WPA/WPA2 -personal This is the recommended mode. In the tab version set the protection mode wpa2-psk, in the encryption section, select the type AES usage TKIP It is recommended to select in case of problems with aes and in line wireless network password assign a password.

Scroll down the page and press the button save. The router will now reboot with the changes applied.

After a minute, you can connect to the Wi-Fi connection again. By clicking on the antenna icon in the lower right corner of the monitor and selecting your network, click connect.

You will be asked to enter your network security key, so enter our password accordingly.

And as we can see, our connection is now connected and secure.

Let's see how many users use our Wi-Fi connection.

You can also see the number of connected devices in the router settings; to do this, go to the tab safe mode -> wireless statistics. The window on the right shows the number of devices connected to our Wi-Fi. You can block access for any user by clicking the button prohibit. Identification of connected devices occurs thanks to the MAC address, this is a unique identifier that is assigned to each device on the network.

And one more way, by going to the tab DHCP -> List of DHCP clients, we can see the connected devices, where the names of these devices are also present. This is how we understand what equipment is connected to our network, a telephone or a computer.

Thank you for your attention!

The entire 2.4 GHz range is now filled with wireless networks in multi-storey buildings. There is a WiFi router in almost every apartment. But not everyone thinks about their safety. No, no, and you’ll find an open network somewhere without authorization. Today, when cobblers can be found on almost every corner, this should not be done under any circumstances! And that is why all network equipment manufacturers insist on one thing - you must have a Wi-Fi password on the router so that no one else can connect. Many people still insist that it is necessary to additionally enable filtering by MAC address, but I consider such a measure unnecessary for a regular home network.

On all modern WiFi modems and routers, setting password protection on a wireless network has an identical scenario, despite the difference in the appearance of the setup interface. For example, consider the most popular models - D-Link DIR-300 And DIR-615.

We start by looking at the sticker on the router. We are interested in the IP address and login with password:

After that, launch any web browser and enter the IP from the sticker into the address bar. In response, an authorization form should open.

Enter your username and password and go to the settings menu of the wireless router.

In order to password protect WiFi on a router or modem, you need to find the WiFi section in the menu.
Usually this section has a subsection Security Settings(Wireless Security). Let's go into it.

and

In order to correctly and competently password-protect a Wi-Fi wireless network on a router, you must first correctly select the security standard that will be used. To do this, in the "Network Authentication" list, select the value WPA2-PSK, Since today this is the most reliable and secure standard, allowing you to maximally protect your home WiFi from attacks from outside. Below we check that the “WPA encryption” list field contains the value AES. In the “PSK encryption key” field, you need to come up with and enter a password that the router will ask when clients try to connect to it via Wi-Fi. It is best done with a mixture of numbers and letters of the English alphabet. Network devices do not understand Russian Cyrillic. It is better to make the password length at least 8-10 characters, then it will be very difficult to crack it. Apply and save the settings. Now your router has securely protected WiFi.

Comment: I highly recommend without fail disable WPS technology. This is the only significant vulnerability that modern wireless routers are susceptible to. In order to do this, you need to go to the menu section, which is called “WPS” and uncheck the “Enable” checkbox.

Today, wireless networks have become extremely widespread and are used both at home and in production. This is due to the fact that you can easily connect to such a network within the range of the router. The mobility of the device that is connected also increases, since there is no need for a cable. In addition, money is saved on the purchase of wire and time on its installation.

No password. What to do?

Despite all the positive aspects, it is worth taking care of the security of the network, since without a password anyone can connect to it without permission and who are within the range of the router. Such connections lead to a drop in speed, as well as additional costs for traffic used by others. To prevent this from happening, measures must be taken.

Many users are very often interested in this question, although there are quite a lot of answers to it, especially since each router comes with instructions for setting a password. Some people don't want to read it, others just don't understand, but setting a password is not the most difficult task.

Principles for setting a password

Today there are a large number of different models of routers, but they have the same configuration principles. The first step is to check that the router is configured correctly. If everything is entered correctly, then the device will have access to the Internet. If access to the global network is not possible, this means that the router settings are incorrect. You must enter the data following the device instructions and the provider's recommendations.

Settings

When the router is configured correctly and the computer connects to the Internet, you need to set a Wi-Fi password. This can be done using a computer or laptop. It does not matter how the devices are connected - via cable or wirelessly. You can also set a password using a tablet or smartphone.

To do this, you need to launch a browser on your computer. After downloading it, you need to enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, but sometimes this does not work, then you should enter 192.168.1.1. This should help.

Login to the interface

When the interface loads, a window will appear on the screen in which you must enter your username and password. To make things easier, manufacturers specify the value admin on each line. If after entering this username and password you cannot enter the settings, there may be two reasons for this.

One of them may be changing the login and password when installing the router. In this case, you should find out this information from the technician who set up the router. If this cannot be done, then you need to return the factory settings and change the password and login yourself.

Otherwise, the default values on the router are different. As a rule, the changed login and password are indicated on the bottom of the router or in the instructions.

After you have successfully logged in, a page for setting up the router will appear on the screen. Each device has it, but the setup principles are practically the same. Very often there are models that do not support the Russian language. This may cause difficulties for users who do not speak English or do not know it well.

Verification algorithm

Here you should go to manual settings, where you need to find the item responsible for security. It will require you to set a password. To do this, you need to find the network authentication tab, which will offer several algorithms. The most reliable of them is WPA2-PSK.

After this, the “Encryption Key” field will appear, in which you need to enter a combination of characters that will serve as a password to connect to the router. It is recommended that the password contain Latin letters and numbers. The length of the combination must not be less than eight characters.
After this, you need to click on the “Save” button and the system will issue a notification that the password change was successful.

Sometimes your Wi-Fi password may become public knowledge. Time passes, and each neighbor is already “eating” your traffic with his laptop, and the computer begins to work slower. As a result, there is only one thing left to do - set or change the password on the router. How this can be done will be discussed further.

Using the Tuning Disk

The first option for setting a Wi-Fi password is to use the setup disk that comes with the purchase of the router. But first you need to connect the modem to the computer using an “Ethernet” cable, and also remove the old Internet connection. To do this, go to the “Control Panel”, which is located in the “Start” menu on the right in the list, and select “Network and Sharing Center”. Next, go to the “Changes adapter settings” tab and right-click on the desired connection. In the menu that appears, select “Delete”.

The next step is to launch the program from the setup disk. Wait until the diagram for connecting the router to the computer appears on the screen, and connect everything exactly as shown in the picture. If you did everything correctly and turned on the modem, a window will open that provides information about the status of various indicators, as well as the ability to enter the connection name and password. To complete the setup, confirm all parameters, and the program itself will create a new connection. By the way, the security certificate should be “WPA2-PSK”, as it guarantees the highest protection for your password, and the encryption type should be “TKIP”. This will ensure new devices have better access to the hotspot.

A few words about choosing a password. Don't use your name or pet's name, a date that is important to you, or simple character sets like "qwer1234," "123456," or "654321." It is not recommended to use the words “password”, “password”, “passw0rd”. After all, they are very easy to choose.

Changing the password in wireless settings

The second option for setting a password is suitable for those who do not want to create a new Internet connection. To do this, open an empty tab in any browser and enter the device’s IP address in the address bar. You can find it on the bottom cover of the modem, where all the data and necessary parameters of your device are always indicated. Also remember the login and password of the modem, they must be entered after the IP router.

Next, the modem web interface window will open. Here you can find or change anything, be it the router’s bandwidth or the DNS address used. But we need the “Wireless Network Settings” or “Security Settings” item. This line may have a different name, since different modems have different settings windows. So don’t be afraid to switch tabs and look for the password field, you will recognize it right away.

All that remains is to click the “Save” button and wait until the router reboots. If this does not happen, disconnect the modem from the power source, wait half a minute and turn it on again, otherwise the changes will not take effect. Don't forget to also recreate or update connections on all devices.
