Where can I talk over the phone other than Skype? Alternative versions of the Skype program - looking for a replacement
More recently, users all over the world used the wonderful Skype program to communicate with each other. The application, running on any platform, was capable of transmitting text messages in real time, using voice and video communication. But after Skype was acquired by Microsoft, many problems arose. First of all, the program has become more resource-demanding; now not every phone will be able to launch a video call. There is a problem with registration, which requires you to create a Microsoft account. The program is constantly advertising something. The time is not far off when Skype will become paid. Is there really no alternative for a computer with Windows and for Android? The focus of this article is a program similar to Skype.
Tender is announced
In order to find an analogue of Skype, you need to decide on the selection criteria - the functionality of the program and the platform on which the application should work.
- Platform. The most popular platforms are Android, iOS and Microsoft. Linux and Blackberry are welcome, they are in the minority, but they also have the right to exist.
- Sending text messages. This is the main requirement for the program, because correspondence gives users the opportunity not only to think carefully before writing, but also to keep a history of communication.
- Voice communication in real time. Free communication from anywhere in the world not only saves money, but also brings pleasure.
- Video communication. It is more of an entertaining nature, but it is a fairly popular function among users.
- Creation of conferences. A very convenient functionality in business when you need to negotiate collectively or for holding seminars.
- Resource requirements. The program should start quickly and use few resources. The important resources of a device are considered to be RAM, processor time, and a communication channel.
A holy place is never empty
Not long ago, an analogue of Skype called Viber was introduced to the world. In a short period of time, the application quickly spread among users and became very popular. So, how did the program win the hearts of millions of users?
- The program is compatible with any platform. The joke that Viber is not installed except on the refrigerator means that owners of any mobile phones and operating systems on computers can use this wonderful program.
- Text chat. It is unique - you can transmit not only text, but also pictures, video and audio messages.
- Audio and video calls. The Viber program easily establishes a connection with the interlocutor and provides communication using the device’s video camera in real time.
- Lots of useful little things. Simple registration linked to a mobile phone number. Synchronizing contacts, identifying owners of numbers who are already using Viber, and notifying them about the installation of the program. No advertising and absolutely free. If you have GPS on your phone, you can transmit your location to your interlocutor.
Small flaws in the Viber program
It's hard to believe, but they exist, and in Lately the developers are in no hurry to fix them. Although the application is compatible with any operating system, there are significant differences in Viber programs installed on different devices.
Owners of Android and iPhone are the luckiest ones - the entire range of services existing in Viber is open to them. Owners of BlackBerry with operating system version seven or lower are not able to transfer audio and video files. Owners of Microsoft and Bada operating systems will be left without an avatar and will join the owners of old BlackBerrys. Although the application was initially positioned as an analogue of Skype for Android, but in its work under the operating Windows systems and Linux would like more functionality and fully working contact synchronization.
An interesting offer for residents of Russia
This is not the first year that Russian residents have been using the “branded” service “Multifon” for communication, developed by specialists from the Megafon company. From year to year, Multifon acquires new capabilities, and the price for calls to mobile phones is rapidly approaching zero. The Russian analogue of Skype has only one significant drawback- “Multifon” is available only to subscribers of the “Megafon” network. But there are countless positive functions.
- The program uses a SIP client, which allows you to use any SIP client, the same X-Lite or Fring, instead of the green “branded” program from Megafon, which are more flexibly configured and have more functions.
- As in Skype, you can correspond, make video and audio calls completely free of charge between Megafon users.
- Calls to mobile phones in GSM networks significantly lower than the tariffs of the same Skype. There are applications for any operating system, including workstations.
- The Russian analogue of Skype allows you to record conversations during audio and video calls.
Another inexpensive solution from Russian programmers
If the use of video when communicating in real time is not critical, another Russian analogue of Skype, Beam, deserves positive user reviews. The program can conduct text correspondence and allows users to make calls within the network completely free of charge. Like Skype, the program can make calls to landline and mobile lines, and the price is significantly lower than its competitors. Users of the Beam program note the high quality of sound during communication. All this thanks to IP telephony, which is used in program code product.
There is also a negative in using the brainchild of Russian programmers, it is the only one, but it is quite significant - the application can only be installed on Android and IOS devices.
About social networks
It is no secret that sending messages, files, making audio and video calls can be done in the same Odnoklassniki, Google or the Mail.ru service. According to statistics, the number of users of social networks is an order of magnitude greater than the number of owners of the Skype program. But they do not use such a wonderful opportunity to communicate. What's the matter?
An analogue of Skype works through social network servers, which are already overloaded due to high traffic. Naturally, there is no question of any quality of voice or video transmission. The only thing you should pay attention to is the ability of the same Mail.ru to work on any platform, including mobile devices of the 2000s.
Players from all over the world, unite!
There is no way around the online gaming program called RaidCall. The Skype analogue for Windows was not chosen by players by chance. It's unlikely to be found free program, capable of organizing real-time audio conferences for large quantity of people. The program's interface may look like Skype, but there are many positive differences.
- High quality sound. Thanks to the use external server RaidCall, where creating a conference is also free, players do not feel discomfort in communication.
- Low requirements for computer resources. Taking away several megabytes from the system random access memory, the program takes 1% of its resources from the processor, which is a high figure among similar applications.
- Compatible with different platforms. Android, Windows, IOS, Linux and other operating systems are familiar with the program, and everything works great.
Five thousand people in an audio conference?
This is possible with the TeamSpeak program, which is capable of uniting up to 512 people into an audio conference, who can communicate without problems in real time. The program also provides messaging capabilities between users and allows you to send files. Like RaidCall, the application can work with different platforms and is undemanding of system resources. Thanks to the use of an external server, the sound quality in an audio conference is high, regardless of the number of participants.
TeamSpeak, an analogue of Skype, has one drawback - the server part of the application is paid. This means that to create a conference, you need a moderator who must rent a “room” on the server with a specific IP address. He provides this address to all conference participants with whom he needs to communicate.
Free software from Google called WebRTC was initially not appreciated by either users or developers. As soon as Russian developers, interested in the software, created Russian analogue“Skype” and begin integrating it into the masses, just as Google revived its project. Several developers at once free browsers, such as Opera, Firefox and Google Chrome, announced to the world about new technologies implemented in their software.
WebRTC is an open Internet protocol that, like other analogues of Skype for PC, allows you to make audio and video calls in real time. The code is written in JavaScript, which means that the owner of any device can use the service, regardless of the operating system and device performance. The main condition is the functionality of the browser.
Finally
The listed analogues of Skype for computers and mobile devices are just the tip of the iceberg. Having proven itself well among users, thanks to positive feedback, programs attract attention. If you delve deeper into this topic, you can find thousands similar analogues"Skype". There will never be one ideal communication program that satisfies all requirements. As soon as an application gains popularity, it is bought by the giants of the IT industry and becomes paid or resource-intensive - this is a pattern. You need to learn to keep up with the times, find and use free apps according to the assigned tasks.
The slowdown and synchronization problems with Skype suggest that it’s time to find something to replace Skype with. But it's not so easy to find an alternative to Skype for PC that works on most platforms and supports file transfers different types, group calls and chats, safe, not slow and, preferably, free. For example, many applications only work in mobile version or offer free Skype features for money. And yet we will try.
Viber
Viber is considered the main competitor of our ward, and even has some advantage over it. A special feature of the messenger is that you log in to your account using your phone number, the application is synchronized with the phone book, i.e. the contact list is created automatically.
Advantages
While on Skype calls to everything mobile numbers are paid, in Viber only calls to numbers not registered in the program are paid. In fact, you can call via Viber like a regular phone, but for free, and the call quality is quite high.
As for the main criteria, we give pluses for cross-platform and free. You can write, call and video chat with contacts, send multimedia messages, create group chats, which is also a big plus.
In the latest version, Viber 5.9, there is an option to send all kinds of files, including office files, weighing up to 200 MB. But for a successful transfer, the interlocutor must also have the latest version installed. In addition, you can track whether the message was received by the interlocutor.
Bonus entertainment for Viber users - subscription to public chats, games and all kinds of sticker sets. At the same time, there are no advertisements in the application.
Flaws
Binding to a number, insecurity. Registration in the program is only from your phone, the application is too tied to numbers, and in fact it is much more convenient to use in the mobile version than in the desktop version. From the same connection to the phone number it follows low security communication in Viber - hack an account - nothing to do.
Sending files. Significant disadvantages of the program are problems with synchronization between the desktop and mobile versions, as well as the issue of file transfer. Until recently, only multimedia files were transferred in Viber, and in the desktop version there were problems with transferring anything other than photos.
Total
Viber is truly an alternative to Skype, but rather mobile. Although, perhaps, the latest version of the messenger has become more comfortable for use on a PC.
Verdict: Viber is your choice if you are looking for a replacement for Skype for communication - it is good here, and even better than Skype. For collective work, the messenger so far seems to be more problematic than Skype.
Telegram
Advantages
The advantages of Telegram include freeness, cross-platform, speed and the ability to create group chats.
You can send files of any type and your geolocation data, as well as search for images on the Internet right inside the messenger, use free stickers and add your own.
Telegram is positioned as a secure and privacy-protecting messenger.
Flaws
Security is not for everyone. The option of so-called “secret chats”, which leave no traces on servers, is not available for the Windows version. The issue of the application’s security remains open due to the same connection to the number.
Total
If you are only satisfied text correspondence, Telegram is a completely tolerable program that replaces Skype.
TOX
TOX is a project whose goal is to provide direct messaging between IP addresses without the use of centralized servers.
Advantages
The messenger is free, there are clients for different software platforms.
Since the developers’ task was to create an alternative to Skype, all the main functions are available: text messages, audio and video communications, group chats, file transfer.
It is considered one of the most secure messengers.
Flaws
Inconvenient adding contacts. To add a contact, you need to know his indigestible Tox ID - a set of several dozen letters and numbers, or a more readable address, which a friend must receive by registering in the Tox database on the official website.
Narrow functionality. There is no function for sending messages offline and many pleasant little things that are available in other instant messengers.
Inconsistencies in work. The project is still under development, so many functions are crude and sometimes do not fit together between clients working on different platforms.
Total
If you are wondering what to replace Skype with to ensure greater security and privacy, you can install TOX. But you need to be prepared for failures and limited functionality, since the program is in the process of being finalized.
Hangouts
Hangouts is familiar to all owners account Google, but not everyone knows about its capabilities.
Advantages
Supports text chats, calls to phone numbers (toll-free if not in the US or Canada), as well as video conferencing and free broadcast Hangouts on YouTube.
Hangouts works on different platforms, correspondence is synchronized between different devices.
There is sending of emoticons, photos and maps, there is integration with Google mail.
Flaws
Google users only. Linking to a Google account and Chrome browser on PC.
Images only. There is no way to send files other than images (however, this can be solved by saving the files on Google Drive and sharing them).
Data insecurity. According to Google representatives, the messenger is not so secure: the company can listen/read conversations and transfer data to the authorities upon request.
Total
If you have a Google account, it would be a shame not to use Hangouts as an alternative to Skype. But, in terms of security, it is no better, but weaker in functionality.
CacaoTalk
CacaoTalk is a popular South Korean product that is now actively used in other countries.
Advantages
Cross-platform, support for group chats, calls and video calls, exchange of files up to 100 MB and cute emoticons, pleasant interface.
In addition, the application supports a lot of games, an online gift shopping service, news from celebrities and brands, information about promotions and discounts.
Flaws
Speed of work. In general, the application is fast, but the servers are located all the way in Korea, which is why the messenger may be periodically slow-witted. The interface language of the official program is only English, Korean or Chinese.
Privacy is in doubt. The issue of security is controversial: on the one hand, there was information in the media that the authorities were monitoring CacaoTalk, on the other, the owner of the application stated that he was not going to provide correspondence data to anyone upon request (but this is more likely for users from South Korea).
Total
CacaoTalk not a bad alternative Skype for Windows and other software platforms.
Bleep
Bleep is another decentralized messenger that establishes communication between contacts directly, bypassing central servers.
Advantages
Free clients for different platforms.
To register, you don’t have to use an email or phone number – you can only indicate a nickname.
Safety ( end-to-end encryption and no cloud storage, no metadata traces). The ability to “whisper” a message and delete it without a trace after reading it.
Messaging, calling and file transfers are available.
Flaws
Speed of work. Judging by the reviews, it freezes at times and eats a lot of energy (however, the latter is not so important for the PC version).
Total
Bleep is a security guru. So, if you are paranoid about listening/reading, install Bleep.
Slack
Slack is a purposefully corporate messaging app designed for teamwork.
Advantages
Messages are grouped into separate channels: These can be large group chats or private messages.
You can search among all messages at once.
Integration with cloud storage(Dropbox, Google Drive), social networks(Twitter) and other services.
Eat free version, supported by all major platforms.
Extensive capabilities for working with files.
Flaws
Security issue. In 2015, the messenger user base was hacked, however, after that, additional measures security.
Total
According to the developers, Slack is used by employees of many well-known companies, including a NASA laboratory. Messenger seems like a cool alternative to Skype for teamwork, but there is a need to complement the application with voice communication.
Let's summarize the above
- Viber only lacks the ability to make group calls to completely replace Skype. Rating: 9/10
- Telegram attracts with its speed and declared security. We are looking forward to voice chats. Rating: 8/10
- TOX and Bleep are distinguished by privacy and reliable encryption and, unfortunately, the product is not ready. Rating: 7/10
- CacaoTalk does not have any distinct features, but it can easily pass for an alternative to Skype if you know English and agree to communicate with the world through Korea. Rating: 7/10
- Hangouts and Slack are good for teamwork, but with their own characteristics. Rating: 6/10
None of the listed applications claim the versatility and optimal set of functions that Skype has.
And if you dig deeper, not a single messenger is without problems with synchronization and freezes.
What messenger do you use, and which one would you recommend as an alternative to Skype for PC?

Without a twinge of conscience, I ask for “phone numbers” from guys and girls I don’t know well. To check whether the lock button fits comfortably under your finger and whether the autofocus works quickly :) I would like to visit MWC and conduct a live blog from the thick of things.

Viber, as for me, is too “heavy” - i.e. it takes up too much RAM, which can cause other programs to slow down.

Thanks for the interesting and useful article Dear author. To be honest, I didn’t know (like most users) that there are so many programs similar to Skype. In my opinion, the most suitable ones for replacing Skype from the list above are: VIiber, Tox, and also the Google program Hangouts. I, in turn, would like to add to this list such a program as ICQ. Once upon a time there was this program on an old laptop and I successfully used it to telephone conversations and sending SMS. The programs are, of course, good and can replace Skype with them, but the problem is different, in the ignorance of users about them.
AnswerZhenya 02/17/2016
Alex's answer:
Also reading the article I thought about adding ICQ. They took several steps to capture at least some portion of users, but even I, nostalgic for this service, did not appreciate them. The quality of video communication is very poor, not even close to Skype. But as a messenger it is quite convenient, but not popular and, as a result, again useless.

And the problem is that they do not fully replace Skype. There are a lot of messengers, but somehow there is no such universal on the horizon, so that it would be convenient to use both in work and in communication...
AnswerVarvara 02/18/2016
For me, Skype is indispensable. Do not forget that it appeared first and most users are registered in it. Whatever application you use, both you and your interlocutor must have it. So it turns out that there are more of your friends on Skype, but there are problems finding them. And if my mother, for example, had difficulty installing Skype and got used to using it, why ask her to install Viber, for example. Moreover, he has not yet reached that level. There is a note about Viber. I have it installed on my phone and on my computer, and if I can see the history of correspondence in Skype, regardless of where it was conducted, that is, if I corresponded on my phone, then I can view this correspondence on my computer, but in Viber there is no such option. And for some reason I can't use the camera to make a Viber call. And for sending text messages, I found WhatsApp more convenient. I use it.
With people anywhere in the world. Supports video calls, mobile IP telephony and instant messaging. The first version appeared in 2003, and in 14 years Skype works has accumulated over 600 million registered users. But growing popularity VoIP technologies caused the emergence of applications and programs for communication such as Skype. Many of them are much simpler, faster and more functional than Skype.
Why Viber and not Skype
In the world of communication services, Skype has held a leading position for more than 10 years. This was exactly until the moment when Microsoft decided to buy the company. Now users are complaining about an increase in the number of failures, instability of work, high traffic and the appearance of intrusive advertising. Skype also suffers from spontaneously going offline followed by a reboot, which lasts for 10-15 minutes.
Thanks to the abundance of instant messengers and IP telephony services on the market, owners of PCs and portable devices can choose a program for communication like Skype. The first contender as a Skype alternative is Viber. The application works on iOS, Android and Windows Phone via 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi network.
It is also a program for communicating like Skype on a computer. After installation and launch, it must be synchronized with your phone via QR or SMS code. All data and contacts will be automatically transferred to your account on your PC.
Popularity and capabilities of the application
The number of Viber users exceeded 100 million in May 2017. And soon the developers promise to conquer the budget platforms S40 for Symbian Nokia and Bada for Samsung. This step will add another 1.5 million people who want to appreciate the delights of Viber.
Application features:
- provides free calls and chats between users;
- includes games;
- public chats;
- calls to mobile and landline phones;
- Available on most platforms including Mac and Linux.
Viber is shareware. No need to pay for downloading and installation. The program is freely available on the official website, Google Apps and iOS App Store. There is no need to pay for calls and correspondence with Viber users. Only when making calls to unregistered numbers - Viber Out - will you have to pay money.
Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts appeared in 2013 as a symbiosis of the messenger Google Talk and social networks Google+. This is a Skype-type communication program for Android, Apple products and PC. Like all of the company's products, using Hangouts is simple and convenient.
In some smartphones, Hangouts is installed automatically and, together with other Google products, is a standard tool. If you have a valid account, just launch the application and log in to your account. The program itself will transfer and synchronize contacts from the phone book and Google mail.
For installation on a PC with OS Windows Google Hangouts is installed as a plugin or extension on the Chromium engine. Web communications are carried out in real time using WebRTC technology. Calls occur directly in the browser window without the use of unnecessary tools.
Based on the Hangouts service, Google created a program for communicating like Skype on TV. With a Chromebox, microphone, camera, screen and monitor, the user creates a meeting room. Hangouts technology also allows video conferences for up to 30 participants.
ooVoo
A free Skype-type communication program for PCs running Windows, Mac, iOS platforms,Android. Distinctive feature - video calls High Quality. The application supports group chats of up to 12 people. To add a user to a conversation, just send him a link.
OoVoo has already gained more than 80 million users. It enjoys its popularity among young people due to the ability to record video conversations and broadcast the screen to chat participants. The application also supports instant messaging, calls to landline numbers and web calls to non-ooVoo users.
Appear.in
A program for communicating like Skype without maniacally picky confirmation of accounts and creation of profiles. The address of the conference room is entered into the browser line, and the user immediately joins the conversation. No need to download or install anything. Appear.in works similarly on mobile devices through links.
The Appear.in plugin was developed by Scandinavian startups for browsers that support WebRTC, which ensures image quality and clarity. How does it differ from similar services to Skype:
- Video conferencing via Appear.in can be streamed on your blog or webpage. Enough in the tag
- The application has the ability to chat, like in Skype, and screen broadcasting.
- The conference is designed for 8 people, with the purchase of a premium account - for 12.
- The conversation can be blocked from outside visitors.
Talky
This is an independent development of a Washington company worth $15 million. It is an alternative not only to Skype, but also a competitor to Hangouts technology. The web service was created for group video conferences for up to 15 people with demonstration of screen content.
It's very easy to start using:
- go to home page talky.io;
- create a URL for your chat;
- select “Start chat”;
- share the URL with friends.
Advantages of the service:
- 24/7 support service;
- use of real-time technologies;
- anonymity;
- no registration.
Talky.io and Appear.in - similar programs for communication like "Skype" for PC and phone. But among the CIS countries, the services have not received proper distribution. Their unpopularity is explained by the fact that mobile versions are designed exclusively for the iOS platform.
Tox
Not all communication programs like Skype are safe and protected from mass surveillance systems. That's why the developers created Tox. The main task When created, it was necessary to ensure complete confidentiality of correspondence and personal data.
This is not just a chat program, it is a special protocol similar to BitTorrent with a peer-to-peer network and a peer-to-peer connection does not need to host information on servers, which means user data cannot be detected.
Like other VoIP services, Tox supports sharing features instant messages, video and voice calls, conferences, emoticons, file transfer. Moreover, the service is free, there are no advertisements, and the interface is much more convenient than Skype.
A Chinese program for communication like Skype and for games that you can play with friends directly in the chat. The application combines the best qualities of Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It contains all the standard IP telephony capabilities, as well as several specific functions:
The WeChat community has 600 million users. The development is positioned as an integral part in all areas of life, and not just for emoticons and photographs. At the same time, the service can be used for free on any device and as a desktop application.
Slack
Slack is a teamwork messenger for iOS/Android and Mac/Windows platforms. Designed for one-on-one communication in real time and group chats. There is integration with more than 100 services, such as GItHub, Skype, Dropbox.
The messenger has three tariff package. The first one is free and can hold up to 10 thousand messages. The second one is for 6 dollars and 67 cents. The third costs $12 per month and is aimed at business teams that require SSO.
A distinctive feature of the online service is the ability to create several correspondence channels, add users to them, and archive all messages. You can call one person from a group using push notifications with the @ icon. You can also send photos, videos, files.
The service includes features that are not available in other online messengers, for example:
- transmission of animated GIFs;
- login link instead of entering a password;
- your own SlackBot you can talk to;
- the ability to add funny /SHRUG, emoji to messages and set reminders.
The largest free platform to send messages around the world. Every day, 30 billion messages pass through the messenger. Initially, WhatsApp was created as a Skype-type communication program for Android phones, but now the application is available on Windows, Symbian, iOS, and Blackberry.
Client benefits:
- simplicity and accessibility of tools;
- no advertising;
- the application automatically imports contacts from the phone and reports which of them uses WhatsApp;
- the ability to share your location, photos and status with friends;
- 100 free messages monthly and free video calls.
The application is undemanding in terms of device configuration and runs on Android 2.0, unlike Viber, which requires a series of at least 4.0. But the service has one significant drawback, due to which WhatsApp is not suitable for corporate correspondence. It consists of insufficiently high data encryption. If desired, the client is easy to hack. The last unpleasant moment is that any user can see the photo and profile status, as well as the time of the last visit.
Kakaotalk
The most popular smartphone app in South Korea, used by 93% of the population. It features an accessible and colorful interface with typical Asian animation. The service has standard set mVoIP functions, including free messages, calls, photo and video transfer.
Kakaotalk not only includes communication and microblogging, but also has gaming platform. The application has 30 million active gamers. All mini-games are available in Google Play for smartphone users and in the App Store. The application is monetized through the sale of unique emoticons, Kakao-friends and themes.
Threema
This is a Swiss top-secret messenger, around which the media are waging a lot of battles. The management of Threema GmbH is suspected of regularly reporting to Russian intelligence services. But such slander did not make the application any less attractive. You don't need a SIM card or phone number to make Threema calls. Now you can make calls from your tablet or iPad. This is a serious reason to think about it and change Skype to Threema.
The application promises users Swiss quality, European elegance and call protection from copying. The developers placed emphasis on security. Threema uses the open source cryptography library Native Client for end-to-end encryption. Keys are generated and stored on the user's device to prevent unauthorized access and the creation of backdoors.
In terms of functionality, the messenger is in no way inferior to Skype or Viber. The interface is very different from Wechat and Kakaotalk. Calm color scheme without cats, emojis and anime pictures. The Treema program is designed for a business person who respects his personal space, time and confidentiality.
Never had Skype the best protocol safe and secure communications, and after it was bought by Microsoft in 2011, many concerns began to accumulate about privacy and conversations on Skype.
Although Skype has excellent applications for all platforms, including not only Linux, but also Windows, Android, OSX, which are very convenient to use, but if you want peace of mind about the privacy of your data, you need to look for an open source and encrypted alternative.
There are many similar programs for computers running Windows control, but if we want to find an analogue of Skype for Linux, with Linux support, and even an application for smartphones, it will not be easy. The choice of program depends on what type of connection you need. Skype covers text chat, video chat, VoIP. Finding a safe alternative that includes all three features will not be easy. But such projects still exist.
In this review we will look at best alternatives Skype Linux. Moreover, we will place the main emphasis on ensuring that the program has all the necessary functions and supports various platforms and encryption.
Tox is the project closest to Skype in terms of functionality and capabilities; one might say, a direct alternative to Skype Linux. The program supports three types of communication: text chat, video chat, and VoIP calls. Also from Tox, great interface, in some places even better than Skype.
The reason for the emergence of Tox was recent events that showed how interested the government is in knowing everything we talk about on the Internet. Tox developers place user privacy as a priority and promise to never change the application's policies. Maybe things will change later, but so far they have stuck to this direction.
All interactions in Tox are securely encrypted. There are no advertisements here. And the open license allows you to modify the Tox code however you want. The program is available, in addition to Linux, for Windows, MacOS and Android.
2. Linphone
Linphone supports encrypted VoIP calls, which is a great reason to try this app. The program is available for various platforms(Windows, Linux, Android, IOS, WinPhone), has a beautiful interface and you can rest assured about your privacy.
Linphone supports video and VoIP calls, as well as latest versions text chat. You can manage multiple calls at once (pause, hold, and transfer). It is also possible to combine several calls into a conference.
If for some reason you don't like Tox, you can try Linphone, it's an analogue of Skype for Linux, ready to seriously compete with the original, supporting full set functions and protocol encryption.
3.Telegram
Telegram is an even stronger analogue of Skype for Linux, like other applications, it is completely free to use, and does not have any advertising. But there is one drawback - there are no voice calls yet, but as the developers say, such a function will appear soon.
Communication between you and your contacts, as well as your messages, are fully encrypted. For even greater security, you can set messages to self-destruct after the desired time. You can send files of any type and, if necessary, media data will be saved in the Telegram cloud.
Telegram is based on cloud technologies. A network of servers is scattered around the world to deliver your messages to the recipient as quickly as possible and maintain synchronization between devices.
Despite data encryption, there are potential risks in using Telegram associated with storing data in the cloud.
4. Jitsi
Jitsi is a modern cross-platform free messenger open source. In addition to the standard functions of text messages, video and VoIP calls, popular protocols such as Jabber, XMPP, Facebook are supported.
There is also an emphasis on privacy and confidentiality. All your messages and calls are encrypted using OTR and ZRTP protocols.
But there is one drawback: only desktop platforms are supported: Windows and Linux; there are no applications for Android and IOS yet. But as mobile clients You can use applications that support the OTR protocol.
5. Viber
This is a relatively new, but already quite popular application for exchanging text messages, video and VoIP calls. Quite a popular analogue of Skype for Linux.
The project was initially developed for smartphones and tablets, but then versions were released for desktop platforms, including Windows, Linux and MacOS.
An interesting feature of Viber is its simple and beautiful interface, which is much more more convenient interface Skype. For example, to extract Skype chat history you need to understand the program files and use third party utilities, right here backup copy correspondence is done in a couple of clicks.
As in previous programs, your messages, according to the developers, are reliably protected by encryption.
6. Google Hangouts
It's not really regular program, as we are used to understanding it. Hangouts is a browser plugin that allows you to exchange messages, make regular and video calls, and transfer media files to your friends registered in Hangouts. The service supports not only Windows and Linux, but MacOS also has applications for Android and iOS.
This is a relatively new service, which appeared in 2013. In addition to regular chats, it is possible to use group chats, as well as create group video conferences with the ability to broadcast to Youtube. The developers claim that during calls and video chats, all transmitted information is encrypted so no one can access it.
conclusions
If you need the most complete alternative to Skype, the best ones are Tox or Liphone. They both have all the necessary functionality, so to speak, all in one. Telegram is also a good choice if you're willing to give up video calls and don't mind the cloud.
And what analogues of Skype do you use for Linux? Are there other alternatives that support encryption and the desired functionality that I missed? Or will you never give up Skype? write in the comments!
You may or may not like Skype, but it is impossible to deny the popularity of this application. It is pre-installed on smartphones and laptops, even grandmothers and preschoolers use it, and Skype login found in contact information for online stores and on business cards almost as often as a mobile phone number. But while ordinary people are using the popular application with all their might, the more advanced audience, who worked with it back in the days when no one knew what a “Skype headset” was, is already looking for an alternative. After takeover popular messenger Microsoft Corporation introduced advertising in the program, and not so long ago it became known that support would be stopped within the next couple of months outdated versions Skype.
In the official explanation, the developers explain this step by saying that older releases are incompatible with new messenger functions (for example, sending messages to contacts who are not online). In addition, if users are working with older versions, it is impossible for the program to work correctly when accessing the network from several devices. No one doubts that there are other reasons why Microsoft is uncomfortable with the old Skype versions, but we can only guess about them. However, the main thing is that very soon users of Skype 6.13 for Windows and earlier versions, as well as Skype 6.14 for Mac and older releases, simply will not be able to use the program. When trying to log in from old version The application will prompt you to update the program, otherwise the connection will not be established.
When people are forced to do something, it invariably makes them want to abandon the service, no matter how familiar and convenient it may be. But finding an alternative to Skype is not easy, if only because over the many years of its development the application has received a lot of functions that can be used on various devices: desktop computers and laptops, smartphones and tablets. And for most of us, giving up the usual app on a Windows computer means looking for an alternative on a mobile device. Although the problem is most likely with the desktop messenger. There are a lot of mobile applications for text messaging, VoIP telephony and video calls, but not all of them have versions for Windows. Most developers are focused on developing their products for mobile platforms. Nevertheless, there are instant messengers that work simultaneously on mobile devices and computers, and it is them that we will talk about today.
Jitsi - for now only for desktop
The developers of most modern instant messengers rely on support for popular mobile platforms, and desktop systems pay much less attention. In this regard, Jitsi is a unique program, since it works on all popular desktop platforms, but only Android is supported on mobile platforms, and even then only in alpha mode. Almost complete absence support for mobile devices is offset by a number of other advantages.
Firstly, in terms of basic functionality, Jitsi is not inferior to Skype - the same voice communication, video calls, including group ones, chat available, the ability to show your screen. Secondly, Jitsi is not just a free program, it is also open source. At the same time, it is quite secure, since all traffic is encrypted. Thirdly, the application has good compatibility with other open standards: for example, sound is transmitted using the Opus codec, supported Google accounts, Facebook and other popular networks, voice and video calls in Jitsi can be made through SIP and XMPP accounts.
The SIP protocol is convenient for communication between users who are located in local network. This method of communication does not require registration - just indicate your IP address and a custom login. And in order to make voice and video calls not only on the local network, you can use the free XMPP service from the Jitsi developers. To do this you need to go simple registration on the jit.si website, and then enter your XMPP account information (login is indicated in the format user@jit.si).
Jitsi saves call history and allows you to keep track of missed calls. The application also allows you to transfer files - you just need to drag them into the application window. For voice calls, it supports echo elimination, noise reduction, temporarily muting the microphone, holding a call, and simultaneous voice chat with multiple interlocutors.
Viber is useless without a smartphone
Viber is a project that has partially Belarusian roots. One of the founders of the messenger is Belarusian, and work on the application is being carried out in Brest, as well as in Israel. The first version of Viber was released for the iPhone, but today you can use the messenger on almost all platforms: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, the forgotten BlackBerry OS, Series 40, Symbian and Bada. And since last year, Viber also works on desktops Windows platforms, Mac OS X and Linux, however, with some reservations, which are discussed below.
Viber supports all the usual Skype functions: you can chat with friends (up to a hundred people can be in one chat at the same time), and also make calls - just like in the one-on-one mode. voice communication, and with video. True, video calls currently only work in desktop versions of the application, and even then in beta mode.
If you want to use Viber as an alternative to Skype on the desktop, do not forget that this application was initially developed as a mobile one. This is why registration from the desktop client is not possible. To become Viber user, you must first install the application on your smartphone. A phone number is used for authorization; the same number must then be entered in the desktop client. After this, an activation code will be sent to Viber mobile, which must be entered in the desktop program. Moreover, if you log out of your Viber account in the mobile application, the desktop version will immediately stop working.
Viber desktop picks up the list of contacts from your mobile phone and displays them in the main window. If you wish, you can also connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts - then your contact list will become even larger.
Those people who use Viber will be marked in the contact list with a special icon - you can call them or chat for free. You can also call other contacts, but using the paid Viber Out function. If you install Viber on two or more devices, the application will synchronize all messages between clients. If a message is deleted on one device, it will also be deleted on the other.
Viber offers quite a lot of ways to express yourself. When chatting from a mobile device, you can use not only words and the usual emoticons, but also stickers.
In addition, you can record funny animated videos directly in the application and send them to your interlocutors.
It is also possible to record regular voice messages, send video files and photos stored on the device, and send location information. You can also make drawings and send them to the chat. For desktop clients, it works to send emoticons, stickers, and photos that are stored on the computer.
Among the numerous settings of the application, we can note the ability to block numbers, automatically delete old multimedia files from the device, the ability to hide yourself from the Viber network, free reply to SMS via Viber (if the client is installed on the respondent).
Google Hangouts- video in browser
Google's communication service is integrated into various web services of the company, and also exists in the form of separate mobile applications for Android and iOS, and on Android devices the client is preinstalled by default. From your desktop, you can communicate via Hangouts from Gmail and Google+. There is also an extension for Google Chrome that adds a mini-app directly to the Windows taskbar. Authorization on all devices, of course, occurs through a Google account. At the same time, all events are synchronized between devices: if you missed a video meeting, you will see a message about this on all your devices, as well as the history of negotiations in a text chat.
It's also interesting that Hangouts syncs notification settings across devices. If, for example, your computer has turned on blocking notifications about incoming messages for three hours, then during this time the smartphone will also be silent.
Another feature that will be convenient for those who use Hangouts on different devices, — displays information about which device is currently active. The status can also show information that the user is currently talking to someone.
Using Hangouts, you can send text messages, location information, and photos to your interlocutors (on mobile devices you can take a photo from the application or select one from the gallery). Unfortunately, there is no convenient way transfer files like in Skype. Perhaps someday the developers will also integrate their service with Hangouts “ Google Drive", but for now you can only upload images and videos.
On any device, you can start a video meeting, in which up to one hundred people can participate simultaneously. During a video call, the participant who is currently speaking is displayed in a large window, and the others are displayed in a feed of small windows located at the bottom of the screen. On slow connection With the Internet, video calls in Hangouts work even better than in Skype.
Mobile versions of Hangouts are integrated with SMS (if the user has enabled this feature), allowing the app to show general chat for text messages and those sent through the app.
Hangouts for Chrome has a spartan interface. The application is presented in the form of a separate small window, and also adds its own icon to the notification area (its display can be disabled). At the user's request, it can be launched automatically when the browser starts.
Telegram - only a chat, but safe
Telegram is the youngest of the messengers in our review; the oldest of its clients is not even a year old. Nevertheless, the number of its active users in the spring exceeded 35 million. Behind the promising project is the well-known Pavel Durov, who is investing money in it. Thanks to such powerful support, the application does not have any paid functions, as well as advertising (and, as the developers promise on the official website, it will not appear, since this project is not focused on making a profit).
Telegram is being developed by another Durov, Nikolai, who is Pavel’s older brother. Especially for the service, Nikolay created a special message transfer protocol called MTProto, which provides high level security. So high that for hacking the protocol they offered 200 thousand dollars in the virtual currency Bitcoin, but no one has earned it yet.
Like other mobile instant messengers, Telegram uses a mobile phone number as a login. It receives an SMS with an authorization code. If Telegram is used on multiple devices, you need to keep in mind that the first time you log in from new equipment, you will need to enter a verification code. Therefore, the phone number used for registration must be kept at hand. Interestingly, when authorizing on a new device, a message is sent to already activated devices for security purposes. In addition, in the application settings it is possible to remotely terminate all application sessions except the current one.
Telegram will be interesting for those Skype users who prefer text chat to all methods of communication. There are no VoIP telephony functions, as well as video calls, in Telegram (and are not planned yet). The app offers text messaging and also gives you the ability to send location information as a snippet google maps, attach images, send voice messages and videos up to 1 GB in size. You can record a voice message, as well as take a photo or video for your interlocutor, right there, without leaving the chat window.
All forwarded messages are stored on remote server and therefore are accessible from any device on which you are logged in with your service account. And there can be a lot of such devices, because Telegram officially supports iOS and Android, and also has unofficial clients for Windows Phone, Windows Desktop, Linux and Mac, works as an application for Google Chrome and as a web application in the browser.
You can communicate in Telegram not only with one person - group chats are provided to discuss issues that require the presence of more people. Up to two hundred people can take part in such a chat, and not only the creator of the group, but also everyone who has already been invited to it can invite new participants. When opening a window group chat You can see the total number of participants, and also find out how many of them are currently online.
In addition to regular chats, Telegram also offers private chats with an increased level of security. During communication, data is sent directly between two devices, and the correspondence history does not remain on the remote server. Moreover, communicating in secret chat, you can set the time after which messages will be automatically deleted from the sender's and recipient's devices. However, secrecy also has a downside: in the name of security, you will have to sacrifice the ability to access messages from other devices, the function of forwarding messages to other people, and the ability to send messages to subscribers who are not online at the moment.
ooVoo - video calling, but with advertising
Another application that can be considered as Skype alternatives, -ooVoo. Its main advantages are support for both desktop and major mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Windows Phone), as well as the ability to make video calls on all supported devices. Moreover, making video calls is the main purpose of the service, and a lot of attention is paid to this function. The transmitted video can be equipped with various special effects that are applied on the fly.
Up to 12 people can communicate in a video chat at the same time, and not all of them must be users of the service. If you want to chat with those who do not have the ooVoo app installed, you can generate a link to a video chat. Those who receive this link will be able to join the video conference directly in the browser by entering their details Facebook account or ooVoo account.
ooVoo for Windows is more functional than mobile applications. So, in the desktop client you can send any files (in the mobile version - only photos and videos), record calls and video messages, watch videos on YouTube with friends, and transfer a picture from your desktop.
Unfortunately, ooVoo has not only advantages, but also disadvantages. The main one is annoying advertising, which appears on both computers and mobile devices. You can remove it by switching to the paid version of the service, which also includes the function of storing up to 1000 minutes of video on the service’s servers (remember that you can send videos up to 1 GB in size to Telegram for free).
⇡ Conclusion
Well, today it is hardly possible to find a messenger that is not inferior to Skype in functionality and convenience. Among the alternatives considered, the Google Hangouts service seemed to be the most worthy solution - there are no ads here, and video works well on mobile platforms, and you don’t even need to register specifically, and the contact list is loaded from Gmail. However, other programs may also be suitable - it all depends on which Skype functions you use most often and on what devices you are used to communicating. For example, Telegram is perfect for chatting, Jitsi is perfect for voice and video calls from a desktop, and Viber is perfect for mobile voice communication.
