Fast file copying. TeraCopy is an excellent alternative to the standard Windows utility for copying and moving files and folders

Copying a file is a process in the operating system that absolutely every user who knows at least something about computers can perform. Often, when performing this action, no one has any unnecessary questions. The usual corresponding tool in the file manager "Explorer" is enough to make a copy. But the situation changes diametrically if it is necessary to work with a huge amount of information, especially if this need arises very often. In this case, it is better to use special programs for copying files. There are quite a few of them, so the article will not list them all; on the contrary, the most popular and convenient, according to the majority of users, will be described.

Total Commander

Total Commander is one of the most popular and powerful file managers that can perform operations with files that Explorer cannot do. A special feature of the program is two work areas. Essentially, it's like two Explorer windows, but only they are paired. This makes working on files much more convenient. On the left pane you open the directory that contains the files you need to copy, and on the right pane you open the directory to which you need to move them. After that, you select the ones you need and, using the appropriate tool, copy them where needed. The hotkeys are especially pleasing, with the help of which work on files is accelerated many times.

Unstoppable Copier

Unstoppable Copier, like Total Commander, is a multifunctional program that includes a huge number of tools for working with files. As you might already guess, it also has a copy function, but it is performed in a completely different way. The difference is that you first specify the directory or directory from which you want to move the files, then specify the path to the directory in which you want to place them, and then simply click on the “Copy” button. After this, the corresponding process starts, the progress of which you can track at the bottom of the program window. There is information about the number of bytes that were transferred, how many damaged files were transferred, the number of errors that occurred and the transfer speed are shown. This is also a file; for it you only need to enable the corresponding option in the settings.

FastCopy

As they say, the name speaks for itself. FastCopy is a program for copying files from one directory to another. Unlike previous applications, this one can’t do anything else. But if your goal is to copy files, then nothing else is needed. This is the advantage of FastCopy - its interface is not loaded with unnecessary information, so it will be easier for the user to understand everything. Unfortunately, the program does not support the Russian language, but even without it everything is quite clear. First, you specify the directory from which you want to copy the files, then where you want to copy them, and then click the appropriate button. This program for copying files also has a set of additional parameters, but it is quite possible to do without them.

TeraCopy

Finally, let's look at an unconventional program for copying files, namely TeraCopy. Its main difference is that it does not have a launcher as such. After you install TeraCopy, the copier will simply be replaced in the Explorer context menu. Now, when copying files in the file manager, you will see not the usual file transfer interface, but a special one, which is better in that it is able to check the integrity of data arrays.

Now we have dealt with programs for copying files; all you have to do, based on the above, is to choose the right one for yourself.

About a month ago, when moving files to a flash drive (USB 3 32 GB), the process stopped. The copy window just disappeared and that was it. Part of the file that has already been moved remains. It was a video file that played until it cut out.

At first I decided that the problem was with the flash drive, but then I tried transferring it to an external screw - the same result. It happens that it breaks off when copying a large number, and sometimes even after a couple of films.

I decided that the problem was in the USB ports, but the same ambush occurs when copying or moving from disk to disk on a computer. Sometimes it will be copied, sometimes it will be cut off. It is noteworthy that after the break, nothing happens - the computer does not freeze, everything works and repeated copying can begin immediately. I tried it through Total Commander - everything works like clockwork and without problems. Tell me, what is the problem? Thank you.

I faced the same problem. What I didn’t do. At first I thought there was some kind of failure in the system and did a system restore, but it didn’t help. There were no viruses in the system either. And I started digging further, and as it turned out, I needed to update the system through Windows Update. As a result, some errors were corrected that prevented files from being copied.

Through Total Commander, everything is copied and moved without problems.

The problem is familiar. I never found out the reason for this. Several EXE files were corrupted - when there were a few seconds left before the end of the move, everything stopped, and a file with the same size was in two places at once, and this cannot happen when moving. I had to download everything from the Internet again.

Another problem is when copying or moving is very slow, instead of, for example, 1-2 minutes 30-60 minutes. At the same time, the following was discovered: if you turn off the computer, just in case, unplug the USB connector and insert it again, start the computer again, then the copying or moving process becomes normal, i.e. 1-2 minutes.

The USB connector, although convenient, is extremely unreliable (I say this as a specialist in the field of electronic equipment design), besides, almost all equipment in the Russian Federation is Chinese, and the Chinese are unlikely to use contacts made of gold or palladium. Then dust, dirt - it’s a good idea to wash the contacts with alcohol from time to time. Further, the contacts of the USB connector wear out. Hence the conclusion - the causes of all these troubles may be USB connectors.

Secondly, copying is more reliable than moving - in which case the original file will remain unharmed, and the copy file during digital copying will be the same as the original file. If copying is successful, the extra file is deleted.

Every PC user has ever encountered copying files from one media to another (from USB to hard drive and back, from disk to hard drive, and so on). At the same time, in older versions of Windows, data reading errors often occurred, which could appear even on a slightly worn CD or DVD disc. Fortunately, the Internet offers many programs for copying files that will allow you to ignore, and sometimes even correct, file reading errors, and successfully complete the process without losing information.

Selecting a program to copy files.

FastCopy is a completely free, small and at the same time very useful tool designed to quickly copy data to your computer's hard drive. The application also allows you to delete selected files. In addition, the program provides the ability to speed up the copying process by excluding certain files or enabling the NonStop function (copying will continue despite detected errors). In addition, FastCopy makes it possible to determine the copy speed and buffer size. With FastCopy Portable you can copy files faster than using Windows Explorer, and without installation on your computer. FastCopy Portable does exactly one thing: copy files to another directory. But much faster than regular Explorer.

Instead of copying only very small chunks of files, like Explorer, FastCopy reads large chunks, so the program doesn't have to frequently move from one directory to another to read and write to your hard drive. This makes FastCopy an incredibly fast copying program with very low system load. The portable version can be copied anywhere and used without installation - making it ideal for use on a USB stick. Especially useful for users who often work on different computers.

Total Copy, a program for copying files and folders, is an alternative to the traditional way of copying files in Windows. Improvements include the ability to pause and resume copying if the target disk fails or becomes full.

Advantages:

  • the program can resume copying after a power failure or target disk failure

Flaws:

  • not detected.

Total Copy is very easy to use. The file should be “grabbed” with the right mouse button and dragged to the target folder. At this stage, a context menu appears that offers copying or moving a file in Total Copy mode. An additional option is the ability to adjust the copy speed, which is useful for freeing up system resources for other applications. It copies faster than traditional system tool. Total Copy is an excellent replacement for the standard copy operation. Speeds up copying and allows you to fully control this action. It will be useful for users of older machines, where the process of copying large files can be a real problem.

SuperCopier contains a complete settings menu that allows you to configure not only the program itself, but also some details in the interface. SuperCopier allows you to copy and paste files and folders into Windows much faster, more securely, and more efficiently.

Advantages:

  • easy integration with Windows Explorer;
  • much faster than the standard Windows copy utility;
  • allows you to create copy lists and stop the copying process;
  • settings menu.

Flaws:

  • primitive interface - fortunately, it can be customized!

You can launch the program from the system icon or simply copy and paste files and folders in the usual way: SuperCopier is built into Windows Explorer and takes care of this task. This program not only speeds up copying and moving files, but also adds new useful options: you can now pause and resume a task at any time, check the transfer speed, check the percentage completion rate, create lists of files to copy or move, and even change the list when the process is already running. The best part is that SuperCopier doesn't replace the standard Windows copy and paste feature, so you can try it out and just uninstall it if you're not happy with it.

TeraCopy allows you to copy or move files faster on a Windows system - it is a program for quickly copying files, which will be especially useful when we are talking about several gigabytes of data.

Advantages:

  • much faster than the standard Windows method;
  • integrated into Windows Explorer;
  • Drag and drop support.

Flaws:

  • Not so intuitive interface.

You can launch TeraCopy yourself, in which case you must drag or move files into the program window. TeraCopy copies and transfers large volumes of files much faster than the standard Windows file manager.

Software features:

  • better removal of USB devices;
  • “CardReader” option for ini file;
  • option "ForceSameDriveMode";
  • new language packs;
  • improved performance when testing md5 files.

IMPORTANT. Always check the destination folder and request administrator rights if necessary.

Unstoppable Copier is not a deleted data recovery program. This tool is only useful in situations where the normal procedures for copying, moving, or reading files do not work and the operating system reports an error. Unstoppable Copier is actually a tool for copying data that is visible but inaccessible in the system, for example, due to the appearance of bad sectors on the hard drive or scratches on the optical media.

Standard procedures for copying and moving files implemented in the operating system, if any error occurs, interrupt the operation on the file (reading, writing, etc.). If you try to copy files from a scratched CD/DVD, most often it will fail because even if 99% of the file is copied correctly, failure to read even the last fragment means the entire operation will fail. Unstoppable Copier ignores errors. When a read error occurs, it does not abort the copy, but saves the previously copied portion of the file and then tries to continue to ignore bad sectors. The read file fragments are combined into one, which is ultimately saved in a destination location specified by the user.

With default settings, Unstoppable Copier preserves the attributes of files copied from damaged media. You can also specify the number of attempts to read data. Unstoppable Copier will not help you read data that the system no longer sees.

Traditional backup utilities are useful for storing backup copies of your files, but if you need to back up your entire operating system, programs, or personal settings, you need a much more capable application. If you suspect your hard drive is about to fail, you can take immediate action with HDClone Free Edition. After a simple setup procedure, the software will clone your hard drive along with any data it contains. Apart from the free version, HDClone comes in Basic, Standard, Professional and Enterprise versions. The functionality of the free version is quite limited, but it can be used to clone a hard drive in case of an emergency. The installation file is 16 MB and it takes about a minute to install all the components.

You can run any version of HDClone on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, as well as on various servers. The software will automatically guide you through the entire process with step-by-step instructions. You can back up your hard drive and save it as an image file, create a clone and send it to another storage device, or restore previously created backups.

The utility can perform the same actions on individual partitions. The above features appear as large icons on a clean and clear interface. Once you select one of them, you can proceed to the next step by clicking the “Next” button. Preparing the copying or cloning process is not difficult. The procedure involves selecting a hard drive or partition, assigning it, and making a few final settings. When you select a destination, you can also select multiple options if you want to create a RAW or Smart image, or if you want to encrypt it.

Advantages:

  • The utility is capable of cloning all hard drives;
  • the contents of the hard drive can be saved as an image file or mirrored on another mass storage device;
  • the process is intuitive, so setting up the program will not take much time;

Flaws:

  • significant limitations of the free trial version of the software.

Copying information from damaged disks or to a flash drive is not a job for the faint of heart. Especially when it comes to huge file sizes. It’s especially disappointing when, after copying 99% of the information, the system gives a read error and the entire process is interrupted. Fortunately, most of the utilities described above will help solve the problem of lengthy copying, making the process much faster, and also offer many additional functions.

Out of the box, Windows users receive all the necessary programs for more or less normal work with computers. True, they only have a basic set of functions and provide users with a minimum of information, so as not to frighten ordinary users with incomprehensible numbers and terms. If you want to expand functionality and make basic applications more informative, you have to use utilities from third-party developers. A free program can be a good alternative to the standard Windows copying utility. TeraCopy.

The TeraCopy installation process follows a standard scenario, where you need to confirm the license agreement, read brief information about the program and, if desired, select the folder where the files will be located. Plus, it is possible to choose how the program will be installed, standard with full integration into the operating system or in the form of a portable version that can be kept on a flash drive, and also allow .sfv, .sha, .md5 files to be associated with checksum files. After TeraCopy is installed, users will be asked to familiarize themselves with the release features and allow the program to run.

TeraCopy can be used as a separate application, launched manually, or attached to standard Windows Explorer, which will use this program to copy and move files and folders. If you run TeraCopy as a separate application, you will need to drag files to copy into the window that appears. When integrated with Explorer, TeraCopy will itself intercept files and copy. True, during the first copying, a window will pop up where you will be asked what you want to copy files with, standard means or TeraCopy, if you remove it, you won’t see this annoying question again.

The main features of the application are the ability to pause the copying process, add files/folders for copying when the copying process is running and in case of errors during copying, try to restore files, and in especially clinical cases, give the user problem files with which nothing can be done . Plus, the program usually copies files faster than Windows with its standard tools.

If you don’t touch anything, you will see a running column with the copying speed, the number of files that remain to be copied, how much data remains to be transferred, and the remaining time. This is complemented by three buttons that allow you to pause/resume copying, cancel the operation, and skip the file currently being copied. If errors occur, at the end you will see a list with problematic files and a brief description.

If the files that are being copied already exist, a window with large icons pops up, where you can choose what to do with them - overwrite, skip, or copy with renaming. If this seems not enough to you, click on the “More” button, you will receive an additional list of functions where you can give permission to replace only old or smaller files.

By clicking the plus in the lower left corner, where the copying progress is displayed, you can add another panel for copying, where you need to drag a file or folder, choose what to do with it (copy or move) and specify the folder. By the way, TeraCopy automatically creates a list of popular folders that users most often use for copying, which can be selected with one click.

By right-clicking the mouse, you can call up a menu from where you can change the appearance of the program, making it more informative, including an expanded copy progress bar and a panel with detailed information about the operation of the program. When you enable the last item, in the tabs you can see which files will be copied, where they are copied, what to do if the file being copied exists in the target folder, enable check the integrity of files, if there are hash sums, count for copied files, read hash sums for files , and also look at the program’s operation log.

TeraCopy settings fit into a tiny window, users can enable confirmation of file copying when dragging the mouse, allow the program to be used for copying files by default, enable checking the integrity of files after copying, check the availability of free disk space and use standard operating system tools for caching files. Although there is a drop-down list with a choice of interface language, it is empty, currently made for show.

TeraCopy is a good alternative to the standard Windows utility for copying and moving files. Its main advantages are expanded functionality, a more informative picture of the copying process and allows you to manage it on the fly. If you need it, you can install and try this program in action; if you are satisfied with what Windows offers, there is no point in installing an extra program on your computer.

The program works great on 32 and 64-bit operating systems. The interface has been translated into English, but this, however, is not very annoying; if you integrate Explorer, then you only have to remember the translation of a couple of words.
