Design

The color of the laptop was specified by the manufacturer as Chocolate Black, and, as you understand, it was not in vain. In general, it is worth noting that the color of the device is very advantageous: it is both calm and not boring, because several colors are always more interesting than one. So, the working surface of the laptop is light brown, and everything else is black. As for the materials, everything here is also ambiguous: elements of the case such as the lid and the palm surface seem to be metal. But really it's simple high quality plastic, which appearance very reminiscent of brushed aluminum. By the way, his matte coating It is quite easily soiled and therefore needs regular cleaning.

The hinge mechanism that holds the screen is represented by two hinges. They are also plastic, but this does not affect their functions in any way: the hinges firmly fix the display in a given position, and you are unlikely to be able to lift the cover with one hand. In general, the build quality of the ASUS X540SA turned out to be remarkable, considering, again, the relative cheapness of the device.

The bottom of the laptop is solid, so this will significantly complicate the upgrade, which, undoubtedly, will not suit all users. But the modest weight is only 1.9 kg and excellent dimensions, as for a 15-inch laptop: 381x252x25 mm, will appeal to everyone without exception. By the way, the thickness of the case varies; we indicated the figure at the widest part, that is, at the back, but at the front it barely reaches 23 mm.

Display, sound and webcam

In terms of screen characteristics, the ASUS team did not become original. Thus, ASUS X540SA received a glossy 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels and a pixel density per inch of only 100 ppi. Brightness and contrast, in general, are quite typical for a budget laptop; their reserve is enough for everyday use. Of course we're talking about about indoor use, outdoors it is better not to try to do anything on a laptop, especially in sunny weather, because you risk not seeing anything at all.

The matrix used here is no longer quite up-to-date - TN+Film, which indicates extremely narrow viewing angles. Accordingly, you just have to tilt the screen and the inversion will not take long to happen. By the way, as the manufacturer assures, the display uses ASUS Splendid technology, which can be used to correct color rendition. In principle, using the four proposed modes, it makes sense to try to achieve the most comfortable color temperature, but you should not bet too much on this. Still, having weak initial specifications screen, getting something more worthwhile is an almost impossible mission.

Two SonicMaster stereo speakers are located under the keyboard, which is very good, because... the sound goes directly to the user. Considering that the laptop is still designed for home use, the sound can be described as average. It doesn't have good bass or high frequencies, but for listening to music and watching movies in a small room, the acoustic capabilities should be sufficient.

The webcam in this case is the simplest - 0.3 MP. It is traditionally located on the top frame of the screen, and therefore is perfect for video communication via Skype.

Keyboard and touchpad

The owner of the ASUS X540SA will receive a full-size island-type keyboard. In addition to the main buttons, there is digital block, and this is wonderful, because for many its presence is a fundamental point. Let's go further: the keys have a square shape and light markings. They turned out to be very convenient to use: the press is short and not at all noisy. By the way, the keyboard is not backlit, but such a luxury is usually not typical for state employees.

As for any special features of the buttons, in general there are none. The only thing I would like to note is that the power key is not in the best location - in the upper right corner of the pad. However, this is our subjective opinion; for some, perhaps such a nuance will not be a problem. Let's go a little through the most used buttons: - one-story, the left one is large, and the right one is not too far behind in size. The pointer block is full-size, and not miniature, as is often practiced by modern manufacturers. In general, the keyboard did not cause any unpleasant associations for us; on the contrary, it was comfortable and easy to work with. However, there is a point that confused us a little: during intensive printing, it bends in several places.

The touchpad turned out to be large and comfortable, it has a square shape and clearly visible borders. The finger glides across the surface without difficulty, in particular, thanks to its material – matte plastic. There is support for multi-touch gestures, such as scrolling, dragging, etc. Physical buttons no, but there is a vertical divider that allows you to determine where the right and left mouse button zone is.

Performance

ASUS X540SA-XX012T went on sale with operating Windows system 10 Home 64-bit. The modest dual-core Intel Celeron N3050 with clock frequency 1.6 GHz, which, however, can be increased to 2.16 GHz (Burst). The chip is built using a 14nm process technology, has 2 MB of L2 cache and consumes only 6 W. This processor is not very productive; it can only cope with simple everyday tasks.

The built-in Intel HD Graphics (Braswell) video card, which operates at frequencies of 320-700 MHz, does not improve the situation. There is support for DirectX 11.2 and Shader 5.0. Things are not going well with the launch of games: theoretically, some of them should work, but most likely they will be all sorts of system or simple online games. For example, the same Counter-Strike:GO from 2012 can hardly be called playable: even at low settings and a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, it will show only 10-12 frames per second. In a word, the general picture of the laptop’s performance is as follows: the filling of this modification allows you to work with a very narrow range of tasks. That is, you can open a web browser in which 3-4 tabs will load simultaneously, and also launch Skype, Word document, not the most resource-intensive graphics editor. Most likely, the filling simply won’t handle more synchronously running programs. Of course, this is not much, but, again, someone doesn’t need more. Perhaps it is for this range of tasks that the user is looking for a laptop.

The RAM in the ASUS X540SA is expectedly small - 2 GB of the DDR3L-1600 MHz standard, although the maximum can be 8 GB. To store information, there is a 500 GB hard drive with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm.

Ports and communications

The laptop has a very functional set of interfaces, judge for yourself: on the left side there are USB Type-C, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, VGA and HDMI video outputs, network port RJ-45, combined audio and charging jack.

The right side only has a DVD-RW optical drive and a Kensington lock slot.

The front of the device has a 3-in-1 card reader (SD/SDHC/SDXC), but the back is empty. As for wireless communications, they are represented by Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

Battery

The ASUS X540SA has a 3-cell lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2930 mAh (33 Wh), which shows good results overall. So, with maximum brightness in document mode, the laptop operates for about 4 hours, and watching videos will drain it in just over 2 hours. True, if the brightness is reduced, say, to half, then the battery life will increase: you can watch video for 4 hours, and in idle time – 9 hours. By the way, the maximum load will discharge the laptop in less than 3 hours, and for a budget-level device this figure is quite good.

Conclusion

ASUS X540SA, of course, did not blow us away with its outstanding capabilities, but it did make us very happy with its moments. For example, have you seen many laptops with a price tag of $300 and a USB Type-C port on board? But here he is! Among other advantages, it would not hurt to note the durable case, good quality assembly and stylish appearance. I was also pleased with the battery life and silent operation.

And now, actually, to the shortcomings. As you would expect, the screen of this laptop does not have high brightness and contrast, and the level of color rendition does not break records. The TN matrix here has narrow viewing angles, so when you slightly rotate the display, inversion is immediately observed. In short, the screen let us down, but this is a problem with all inexpensive laptops.

But the biggest drawback of the ASUS X540SA is its hardware. It allows you to simultaneously work with a small number of running applications. And you can only play the simplest toys, for example, system games or basic online games. On the other hand, such weak filling due to the low price tag. Let's look at things realistically: there is no point in counting on high productivity of a budget laptop, while the ASUS X540SA already has many advantages.

This is not just a work laptop that will perform most simple and medium-complexity tasks, but also a completely budget gaming option for relatively little money. Bright design, proprietary technologies, many modifications and much more are offered by this new product for 2017. Let's look at it in more detail.

Description

Asus x540s is one of the company's new products in 2017, which belongs to the so-called X line. The main features of this series are Asus design, proprietary technologies, low cost and good technical characteristics. Other models in the line are clearly positioned for a specific class and tasks, while the x540s is a kind of golden mean.

As the manufacturer assures, the laptop is capable of performing most of the tasks assigned to it, both of medium and high complexity, and can also act as a budget gaming option. Of course, in many game hits on maximum settings It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to play, but at medium or minimum it’s very likely.

Appearance

Made in the proprietary Asus design, which has become distinctive feature the entire X-series. The case material is made entirely of plastic, albeit of high quality. The surfaces are very reminiscent of polished metal, and to enhance the effect even more, the manufacturer created a special texture that resembles a metal surface.

The laptop has several colors - black, brown, white and gold, however mostly on sale You can find specimens in black or brown. One way or another, the laptop looks great and beautiful.

On the right side of the Asus x540s there is only a disk drive, while on the right side there are USB connectors 2.0/3.0, combined 3.5 mm jack for headphones and microphone, HDMI, VGA, LAN port RJ-45, USB Type-C and a connector for connecting an external power supply. Perhaps the most important disadvantage of the X line is the very small number of USB connectors, which is not very convenient. In this case, the laptop has only two USB inputs, one of version 2.0 and the other of 3.0.

Considering that the right side is practically empty, at least 1 additional USB port could easily be placed there, which would make life much easier for the user.

Screen

The laptop screen has a diagonal of 15.6 inches and a resolution of 1366 x 720 with a pixel density of 100ppi. The parameters are more than standard, although in 2017 I would like to see at least HD resolution more often. The matrix here, as in the entire X-series, is made using TN+film technology. The company's engineers have worked hard to squeeze the maximum capabilities out of the matrix, so it is practically free of all the diseases that occur in TN samples.

As for the image itself, the picture is bright, with good color rendition and contrast. There is also a reserve of brightness, viewing angles are quite good. Maximum opening angle top cover is 135 degrees, which is quite enough for comfortable work or watching any video.

Perhaps the most important drawback of the display is the glossy coating, which makes it almost impossible to work with the laptop outdoors in bright sunshine.

Characteristics

Now let's take a closer look at the technical ones. For convenience, all the data was placed in a small table.

As you can see, the laptop has pretty good specifications, which are enough for most everyday tasks.

operating system

Asus x540s comes with Windows 10 "Pro" or "Home" version. This is quite enough for normal operation. In addition to Windows, you can find options for sale on Linux, DOS, or without a pre-installed OS at all.

In this case, you will have to buy a disk with a licensed OS image or seek help from the employees of the store where this model is sold. For an additional fee they will do it without any problems. Windows installation on Asus x540s.

Peculiarities

The laptop also has its own interesting features, which are worth saying a few words about.

The first is the proprietary SonicMaster technology and equalizer for fine tuning AudioWiazrd sound. SonicMaster is a technology that allows you to make sound crystal clear and crisp. There are several presets, as well as the ability to configure all the necessary parameters manually.

The second thing I would like to note is the technology for the Splendid screen. This function allows you to select one of four screen modes depending on the situation. Let's say Vivid mode is perfect for watching a movie, but Eye Care is better for office work.

Well, the last one interesting feature laptop - IceCool. The main point is to place everything in the most " hot" elements of the laptop away from your hands and thereby relieve the upper part above the keyboard from heating.

Price

Today you can buy Asus x540s at a price of 13 thousand rubles for the cheapest modification, which will have a processor with two cores, a 500 GB and 2 GB hard drive random access memory. For about 20 thousand rubles you can get a laptop with 4 GB of RAM, however, the remaining parameters will remain untouched. Well, in the end, for 25-28 thousand rubles you can get a version with a 4-core processor, 4-8 GB of memory and hard drive for 1 GB.

To be fair, it is worth noting that for an amount over 24 thousand it already makes sense to pay attention to the x540LJ model, which has a Core-i3 processor and Nvidia video card 920M.

Conclusion

Asus x540s is a fairly good laptop for the money, which has very good characteristics. Its performance is sufficient for most everyday tasks and not too demanding games. The main drawback is only 2 USB connectors and a slightly inflated price tag for modifications that are not very different from each other.

“Working doesn’t mean boring.” Probably, under this motto, ASUS engineers developed a new generation of popular and relatively inexpensive laptops of the ASUS X series. It is thanks to the attractive design, support for proprietary technologies and a good combination of price and quality that this line is able to win sincere sympathy from a wide audience of users and one of the leading positions on the sales charts.

Delivery and configuration

The ASUS X540SA laptop is packaged in a standard cardboard box medium size, which is distinguished by a dark matte design and the minimum necessary information content (several company logos and a couple of stickers with technical data). The delivery set consists of a compact power supply, network cable and user documentation.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

The ASUS X540SA model has a classic, but at the same time very attractive appearance. A pleasant effect is created by a well-chosen two-color scheme (black and beige), as well as the characteristic design of the display cover and work area, which are stylized as brushed metal.

The laptop case is characterized by fairly compact dimensions (381.4 x 251.5 x 25.4 mm) and low weight (1.9 kg). It is entirely made of plastic, which has pleasant tactile properties and good wear resistance. Almost all main surfaces are matte, which allows you to effectively combat any dirt.

The exception is top part screen unit, which, due to its characteristic texture, quickly collects fingerprints. Fortunately, they are also easy to remove using available tools. It is decorated with a corporate logo located exactly in the center of the lid.

The maximum opening angle is about 135°, which is enough to perform all everyday tasks. The frames around the screen are equipped with rubber inserts for support.

The block itself is held in place by two plastic hinges, which have a tight movement. They perfectly fix the display in any accessible position, but do not allow you to open the laptop with one hand (you have to hold the base).

The working panel of the laptop is presented in the form of a solid plate of matte plastic. It is well secured and over a larger area practically does not bend even under increased pressure. However, with more active typing or using the touchpad, a subtle rattling of the work area appears, which you have to get used to.

The ASUS X540SA laptop features a completely standard and fairly convenient arrangement of functional elements, which allows you to connect all the necessary peripherals to it. There is a socket on the left side charger, USB Type-C port, cooling grille, network interface RJ45, two video connectors (D-Sub and HDMI), USB ports 3.0 and USB 2.0, as well as a combo audio jack. As for the right side, there is only an optical drive carriage and a Kensington lock hole. I would really like to see at least one USB port on this side, which would make it easier to connect a wired mouse and relieve the load on the opposite side. On the front side of the device there is a card reader slot and two LED indicator, while the back side is devoid of any connectors or other functional elements.

The ASUS X540SA base is non-separable, which eliminates the possibility self-updating configurations. In addition to the rounded protrusion of the built-in battery and several mounting bolts, there are four small rubber feet that provide fairly reliable grip of the device on almost any surface.

The build quality of the laptop and the level of rigidity of the case as a whole are pleasantly pleasing. All structural elements fit tightly, without visible backlashes or gaps. The only controversial point is the relatively free pressing of the central part of the display unit cover, in which when closed the screen can rest against the keyboard.

Input Devices

ASUS X540SA is equipped with a full-size (382 x 102 mm) island-type keyboard with a full numeric keypad. Its base is slightly recessed into the work surface. The keyboard unit is secured well, but the base, which is part of the entire working panel, bends a little on the left side. The buttons are equipped with a classic scissor-membrane mechanism, which has a short and fairly quiet stroke with comfortable tactile feedback. The caps have a standard flat shape and differ in slightly increased dimensions (main ones - 16 x 16 mm; digital block - 16 x 13 mm; functional and arrows - 14 x 10 mm). There is no backlight.

The application of symbolic elements is done using the printing method. It is distinguished by fairly good quality and good wear resistance, but is characterized by an unsuccessful color design. If the white Latin alphabet is perfectly legible, then there may be problems with finding the required Cyrillic character, since they are quite dark.

The laptop touchpad is presented as one piece touch panel large sizes - 105 x 73 mm. It is slightly recessed into the base and has good definition. The panel covering is made of matte plastic with pleasant tactile properties and ensures easy sliding. The sensitivity of the touchpad is quite high. There is full support for multi-touch gestures in the Windows OS environment, which are configured using proprietary ASUS Smart Gesture software.

Display, sound, webcam

The ASUS X540SA laptop is equipped with a 15.6-inch AU Optronics N156BGE-E42 display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and a pixel density of 100 ppi. It is based on a fairly good TN+film matrix with good time response and pleasant color rendering. Viewing angles are average, which is quite enough for everyday tasks. Built-in LED lights has a good reserve of brightness for working indoors. However, when working outdoors on a bright sunny day, the backlight may no longer be enough, especially considering glossy finish screen.

The sound subsystem is represented by two fairly high-quality stereo speakers with support for SonicMaster and ICESound technologies. They are located under the keyboard, which is why sound is output through the slots in the top row of keys. Despite such an unusual structure, the sound stream is not perceived as muffled; on the contrary, it has a quite pleasant sound with good detail in the high and mid frequencies, as well as a slight hint of the low frequencies.

The webcam is a simple 0.3-megapixel module with a resolution of 480p. It is located above the laptop screen, surrounded by one activity indicator and two stereo microphones.

Hardware platform and performance

The laptop under review is equipped with a 2-core Intel processor Celeron N3050 with an operating clock frequency of 1600 MHz (can dynamically increase to 2166 MHz), which does not support Intel technologies Hyper-Threading and is capable of processing only two data streams simultaneously. It is manufactured in accordance with the 14nm process technology and is based on Intel Braswell microarchitecture using SoC design. This means that its crystal contains not only the cores of the central and GPUs, but also a memory controller paired with a chipset chip. The L2 cache capacity is 2 MB, and the power consumption level does not exceed 6 W.

The processor is equipped with a built-in Intel HD Graphics adapter with an operating frequency range from 320 to 600 MHz and support for the most popular APIs (DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL 4.2). The accelerator's video memory is allocated from the laptop's RAM and can reach 1 GB.

The built-in CPU memory controller supports DDR3L-1600 MHz modules in 2-channel mode with a maximum capacity of up to 8 GB. In our case, only 2 GB of RAM are installed, which operate in single-channel mode.

Wireless communication of the laptop is carried out using network controller Atheros AR9485, which supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi standards. Optionally can be installed wireless module Bluetooth 4.0, which is not available in this model. Concerning wired connection, then it is performed using the Realtek RTL8139/810x module.

The disk subsystem is represented by HDD Hitachi HTS545050A7E680 with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface and a capacity of 500 GB. It has an 8 MB data clipboard and a spindle speed of 5400 rpm.

The laptop also has a built-in optical drive TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-228GB, which supports reading and writing dual-layer DVDs.

ASUS X540SA comes into the hands of the user with pre-installed operating system Windows 10 Home, which is supplemented with a number of proprietary applications and utilities. They expand the functionality of the system and also help keep the laptop software up to date.

As can be seen from the test results, the laptop's performance is at a relatively low level, which fully corresponds to the stated parameters. His main task will be to work with text editors, surfing the Internet, watching HD content, and running simple casual games that do not require a powerful graphics subsystem. In addition, having a good audio subsystem, the device will be able to satisfy the needs of most undemanding users, acting as a home multimedia center entertainment.

Cooling system, noise level and temperature conditions

The active cooling system of the ASUS X540SA provides fast and fairly efficient removal of hot air. Its performance was tested in three modes: “Normal”, “Game” and “Stress” at an air temperature in the test laboratory of 26°C.

The CO remains completely silent only in idle mode or under extremely light loads, when the temperature internal components does not exceed 55°C. However, as soon as you run several applications at the same time, the cooling system makes itself felt, starting to generate slight noise. IN game mode(using World of Tanks as an example), the temperature immediately increases to 76°C, and the operation of the cooler becomes more noticeable. The system reacts similarly to stressful loads, during which the laptop components warm up to 80°C, although even in this case the noise produced does not cause any discomfort.

During a visual inspection of a working laptop, we did not detect any problems with heating the case. The device remained quite cool and pleasant to the touch, with the exception of a small area near the CO holes and the base above the central processor.

Power supply, battery and battery life

ASUS X540SA is equipped with a non-removable 3-cell lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2930 mAh (33 Wh, 11.25 V), which is capable of providing a good level of autonomy due to the good energy efficiency of the hardware platform.

Yes, in mode maximum load the laptop was able to work for 2 hours 13 minutes, and with viewing Full HD video - 4 hours 24 minutes. In idle mode, its battery drained in 9 hours 19 minutes, which is one of best performance in class.

Uninterrupted operation from the mains and timely charging of the battery is ensured by a proprietary power supply with a power of 45 W (19 V, 2.47 A). It is capable of fully recharging the battery in less than 2.5 hours. At the same time, his working temperature does not exceed 45°C.

Results

As we expected, the laptop ASUSX540 S.A. turned out to be an interesting and quite promising device. By purchasing it, the owner receives a model with a stylish and practical design, high quality assembly, compact dimensions and light weight, loud and fairly high-quality audio subsystem, support for the most popular interface connectors, as well as very decent battery life.

Of course, there are some minor, obligatory shortcomings that are found in devices of this category. But in general, they fade into the background compared to the existing advantages. The last word belongs to the price. And if it turns out to be justified, then the laptop will definitely be a good help to almost any user who is looking for a reliable and relatively inexpensive tool for solving simple everyday tasks.
