Intellicast new i4 charger. Universal charger Nitecore Intellicharger NEW i4

The traditionally black body of the charger is shaped like a parallelepiped with truncated edges, making the design more attractive. The main material for the body was heat-resistant, non-flammable PC plastic for safe operation. Numerous ribs made across the entire surface of the body give an expressive appearance and help dissipate heat. Four pairs of contacts are made of steel.

Double charging speed

Compared to the previous model Intellicharger i4 the new device has twice the output current and, accordingly, is able to charge batteries much faster. The acceleration is achieved by increasing the power output from 750 mA to 1500 mA. Power distribution when charging multiple batteries occurs automatically. It works like this:

When installing one battery, the output current will be 1500 mA

With two batteries you get 750 mA per unit.

With three - The first one on the left will receive 750, the other two - 375.

And finally, with all slots occupied, 375 mA will be supplied to each.

Manual setting of charging speed

The device is equipped with an active current distribution function. When it is turned on, the entire output current (1.5 A) will be supplied to one of the slots. If only one battery is inserted into the charger, the function is activated automatically. In order to quickly charge one of several batteries, you need to press the “C” button three times, the pointer will blink. Switching between slots is done by pressing “C” once, and acceleration is activated by holding this button. Important! The device will charge first all batteries for which the active distribution function is enabled, and then all the others.

Recovery

To return over-discharged IMR batteries, often used in vape devices, Nitecore provided a special recovery function. If you place a very drained battery, Intellicharger NEW i4 will indicate it with four flashing LEDs. The recovery process is started by simultaneously holding “C” and “V”. Attention! Very severely discharged IMRs may not recover. DO NOT run the mode with the battery inserted backwards. This may result in a fire or explosion.

Equipment: charging, cable for connecting to a 220V network, instructions and warranty card (you can read the instructions in English)

To realize the independence of the charger from the size of the battery, a classic mechanism is used that uses a spring-loaded negative contact.

The positive contact is also made in this elongated design for the purpose of versatility

Three charge status LEDs for each of the 4 compartments framed in the shape of a battery (reminiscent of a mobile phone battery charge indication)

Side and bottom view

On the rear panel there is a connector for connecting a car adapter (included in a more expensive kit) and a socket for connecting a power cable for a 220 Volt network.

As it turned out, this type sockets are found in some types of office equipment, in particular in inkjet printers.

The power cables are, accordingly, almost identical, so if a cable with a flat plug is found in the charging kit, it can easily be replaced with a European analogue (in my case, the “correct” cable was included in the kit)

Next, as usual, is the autopsy.

Get women and children away from screens! Scenes of cruelty (18+)

To access the screws you need to remove the four legs

This is the first thing that appears before us after removing the cover

To assess the quality of manufacturing and soldering, I provide a comparison with a photo of a printed circuit board of exactly the same charger (No. 2 is our copy)

As you can see from the photo - at least printed circuit boards and the same, all Chinese are still different :)
View from the other side

The only criticism I had was about the soldering of one of the springs, as can be seen in the photo below, the second spring from the right is practically not secured and is held on by a hook.

I decided that this was not a buzz and, taking a soldering iron, corrected the situation as best I could.

We put the whole thing back together and plug it into the outlet.
Contact voltage in idle mode

For some reason, the idea immediately came to mind to check the charging for the adequacy of the perception of a obviously dead battery (the notorious white and green BTY AA2500:)
There is no voltage on the contacts

By simultaneous flashing of three LEDs on the activated channel, charging confirmed that “the patient is more likely dead than alive...”

Next, a known healthy battery was used

...But it was deliberately inserted incorrectly, i.e. upside down. Again, with the simultaneous blinking of three LEDs on the activated channel, charging seemed to doubt my adequacy...

As if taking the hint, I turn the battery over correct position, which is immediately perceived by charging as a guide to action and after testing the battery, two LEDs light up, the third upper one begins to blink, indicating that there is quite a charge, you just need to “top up” a little

As always, without really delving into the instructions for the device, I put each of the compatible sizes of batteries available in the house into the charger and measure the voltage during charging (I didn’t measure the current, because at that time I didn’t know how to do it :)

One channel was left unused and another 18650 was placed in it.
After a couple of hours, the charger began to heat up noticeably, I decided to record this circumstance, since the device allows it.
Temperature inside the charger (in degrees Celsius)

Temperature in the ward (i.e. for each patient)

Concern was caused by the smallest green “patient” whose final stage While charging, the temperature jumped to 43 degrees.

At the same time, the neighboring battery, of course, also heated up, but not so much.

After charging was completed, the small green AAA battery began to slowly cool down, passing the baton to the last 18650, for whose health I really began to worry, having recorded this result

So that the patient would not give up before charging was completed, a radiator from an ancient processor was used. The effect was immediate

Fortunately, everything worked out, everyone survived.
The above was done during the first evening of getting acquainted with the charger.

Before receiving this model, I already knew that in fact it has two independent charging channels 1 and 2, one more was added to each of them “virtually” and thus we get four channels numbered 1-3 and 2-4.
The degree of heating of the batteries greatly upset me. I connected it with what I put in related channels a jar of 18650 and a little AAA, but why then wasn’t there such a warm-up on the other channel? The next evening I tried installing identical batteries in interconnected channels. For this purpose, pre-planted 2x18650 and 2xAAA were used.

All this equipment was charged and, as luck would have it, it did not heat up in the process.
Subsequently I experimented many times with various options installation of different types of batteries, but the initial “hot effect” was no longer observed, so I still didn’t understand what could have caused it.
Let's look at the charging readings, especially since they showed me how to measure the current
So, we have pre-planted 1x18650 and 1xAA

We put batteries in connected channels 1 and 3 and measure the voltage supplied by charging

What is a “virtual” channel? When placing batteries in connected channels, the voltage supplied to one physical (1 or 2) channel is divided between two (1-3 or 2-4) and is supplied to each channel alternately. The photo below shows that at some point the device shows a lack of voltage at the charging contacts, after which voltage appears and this happens cyclically.

We measure the charge current

I switched the AA battery into an independent channel, the charging current became even greater

Just for fun, I’m adding a couple more, the current has dropped a little

During the charging process, as I mentioned above, the temperature of both the device and the batteries did not increase significantly.
At the end of the charging process, all three LEDs above each of the charged batteries light up, and the power at the contacts disappears. Voltage after charging

What do we have in the end?
On the one hand, it seems to be a good device with some intellectual capabilities, simultaneous charging of several different types of batteries, some kind of indication of the operation process and termination of charging when completed.
On the other hand, the “intelligence” inherent in the device cannot be influenced in any way and you need to come to terms with it, only the developers know by what principle this device determines the required current strength and how it understands that “the client has already had enough.” Thermal protection does not seem to be provided; the manufacturer claims some kind of effective system heat dissipation, which consists of grilles on the sides of the case.

In general, despite the ambivalent feeling, I think that the charger is quite interesting, if it had absolutely no shortcomings, it would apparently be an analogue of the LaCrosse with a similar price tag :) and so, for Chinese batteries quite myself.

At the beginning I mentioned that this model is already outdated.
So, the manufacturer went further and based on of this device stirred up a more advanced one called ""
The new model is equipped with an LCD screen that displays the current operating status: battery type, charge current, voltage, elapsed and remaining time, and is also equipped with! two buttons that allow you to slightly adjust the “intelligence” of the device and, in particular, switch the charge current. In addition, the manufacturer has expanded the list of supported chemistry with batteries.
The sad part is that things don’t seem to have progressed with cooling, it’s still the same “effective” heat sink. It is possible and understandable, why make an ideal device right away, and then what? And so there is still something to work on, maybe they will fix the temperature sensor in versions 5-6, or maybe in 7-8 they will also teach how to discharge...
Well, the price tag - it’s “only” about twice as high as that of the hero of the review, it starts at 40 bucks :(

The device was provided for review free of charge.
Thank you for your attention.
