When refilling with option No. 1, to reduce the likelihood of background occurrence during printing, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the internal cavity of the toner cartridge and the developing unit from residual toner powder during the original refill. As well as periodic cleaning of the development unit with complete cleaning of the dosing blade on both sides, due to the accumulation of TAB additives in the toner. Let's summarize Option No. 1 is suitable for refilling the above-mentioned cartridges. If you put up with high toner consumption and not very high fixation.
When refilling with option No. 2 from Static Control, we have good miscibility with the original toner, almost complete absence of background when printing. Quite mediocre fixation, but higher than that of Option No. 1 toner. And some relative paleness when printing, which is generally acceptable for most users.
Option No. 3 is the brightest of the presented samples. Good mixability with original toner. The absence of an obvious background during printing is a relatively good degree of consolidation. Compared to toner Option No. 1. But the consumption is quite high compared to option No. 2.

At the end of 2016, KYOCERA Document Solutions introduced the ECOSYS M2040dn series of models to our market:
- MFP M2135DN / M2635DN / M2735DW and printers P2235DN / P2235DW - at a speed of 35 ppm, toner cartridge TK-1150 for 3000 pages,
- MFP M2040DN / M2540DN / M2640IDW and printers P2040DN / P2040DW - at a speed of 40 ppm, toner cartridges TK-1170 and TK-1160 respectively, both at 7200 pages.
The new devices, although they have received a print speed increased from 30/35 to 35/40ppm, are positioned in the same mass segment where the M2030dn and the like used to play. For this reason, one should expect their great popularity.
We will not dwell in detail on the characteristics of these devices, but we will note one important feature: for the first time in the design of one-component monochrome Kyocera machines, a fastening unit with thermal film was used instead of a Teflon shaft. In this case, the heating element is still a halogen lamp. Naked)
This feature, coupled with increased printing speed, led to a change in the composition of the toner used - its fixing temperature is lower than that of its predecessors. Also, the new composition shows that visually the imprint of the M2040dn series machines looks “glostier”, like those of flower beds, probably due to the addition of aluminum powder to the toner.
Based on the above, it is logical to assume that toners from the Kyocera FS-4100dn series of printers should work more or less successfully in the M2040dn. In addition, the mechanics of the new devices resemble a hybrid of the FS-4100dn platform and the previous M2030dn.
For testing, we chose 3 main toners from the FS-4100dn:
- T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V3.0 (Boost 3.0),
- T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V5.0 (Boost 5.0),
- T-KYO-FS4100DN-SC-1KG (Static Control).
We will not bore readers with numbers and details; we will present only the results with comments.
A big surprise was the poor suitability of the T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V3.0 toner for the new M2040dn models - almost immediately after mixing with the original toner, printing occurs with a strong background. After about a hundred pages, the background level drops to barely noticeable. There are several ways to combat this phenomenon at the start:
- Before refilling, completely clean the development unit of any remaining original toner. When doing this, be sure to remove the dispensing blade and remove the old toner from the magnet on the back of the blade.
- Reduce the speed of the printing unit. To do this, there is a “Silent Mode” button on the operator panel. Surprisingly, it works.
- Increase the drum charging voltage so that less recharged toner flies to unexposed areas: System menu > Setup/Maintenance > Setup. service > MS. Selecting "1" from the seven available levels produces a somewhat faded but nonetheless passable print.
However, in all cases of fighting background, we do not eliminate another evil - catastrophically weak toner fixation. In addition, testing has shown that Boost 3.0 has a higher toner consumption compared to the original, which entails an increase in refill weight.
The T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V5.0 toner showed good results overall. Excellent print density throughout the test. Low, invisible to the eye, background level. However, toner consumption is higher than the original - more toner is required when refilling.
Excellent transfer efficiency. This parameter is important for the M2040dn line, due to the waste toner bunker built into the drum unit, the overflow of which will lead to a forced stop of printing and additional maintenance costs. Let us note here a surprise from Kyocera engineers - on the drum block of the M2040dn models there are now no plug caps for removing waste.
Boost 5.0 toner also has good miscibility with the original. But mediocre pinning is much better than Boost 3.0, and therefore acceptable for most users.
The T-KYO-FS4100DN-SC-1KG toner from Static Control Components holds its own. The print density is almost identical to the results of the original toner. Mixes well. Transfer efficiency is the same as the original. Consumption is the lowest of the tested toners and is also lower than that of the original; savings on refill weight are obvious.
And most importantly - excellent quality of fastening. Static Control toner confidently deserves the “1-in-1 like the original” (OEM-like) characteristic.
It should be noted here that the T-KYO-FS4100DN-SC-1KG toner produces a relatively pale print density, inferior to Boost 5.0 and Boost 3.0 toners. But it is important to understand that traditionally Kyocera monochrome printing engines produce somewhat pale prints in comparison with, for example, HP. Therefore, despite some objective “paleness,” the user will not notice any difference when switching from the original toner to the toner from Static Control.
Static Control Components itself has not yet certified this toner for the M2040dn line.
About chips. At the time of writing this article, no manufacturer has provided compatible chips for the Kyocera TK-1150, TK-1160 and TK-1170 cartridges. Without a chip on the cartridge (or with the original one blocked), M2040dn devices work. Traditionally, each time you turn on the MFP to unlock the message “Non-original toner container,” you need to simultaneously press and hold the Stop and OK keys (GO and Cancel for printers) for more than 3 seconds. Operation without a chip will be noted in status reports and may result in denial of warranty service.
Focus with “air refueling”, i.e. Loading the toner into the cartridge without waiting for its physical end and blocking by the chip takes place. Note also that in this generation of machines, status reports additionally contain information about the serial number of the cartridge chip. This can be an unpleasant surprise when making warranty claims.
Bottom line: In our opinion, the T-KYO-FS4100DN-SC-1KG toner from Static Control is the best offer on the market for refilling the new Kyocera M2040dn line. OEM-like.
T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V5.0 produces noticeably darker prints and can be considered a low-cost alternative to Static Control toner. In this case, you will have to put up with insufficient toner fixation.
The most expensive of those selected for the test - T-KYO-FS4200DN-BST-1KG-V3.0 - is intended for other models. It fits the Kyocera M2040dn line with a stretch; you have to put up with the background at the beginning of mixing with the original, as well as weak toner adhesion.
