Windows 10 won't connect to wireless display. How to display an image on the big screen via Miracast

The term Wi-Fi entered our lives not so long ago, but has already firmly become commonplace, without which it is difficult to imagine this life. Today, there are more devices using Wi-Fi than there are people living on Earth. The worldwide network of Wi-Fi Alliance companies is working on the creation and continuous improvement of this standard.

It was she who, at the end of 2012, introduced an open standard for wireless multimedia signal transmission, called Miracast. This standard based on Wi-Fi Direct technology, does not require the presence of a router. The TV itself creates a local network, to which you only need to connect by performing simple operations. To exchange multimedia signals, you only need a transmitter and a receiver. In the process of information exchange, it is not files that are transmitted, but video signal packets (ITU format - TH .264). It is also possible to transmit a signal from a TV to the screen of a laptop, tablet, etc.

Features of the standard

Advantages:

  1. There is no binding of the device to a specific display, either via cable or software, by installing a special driver.
  2. Possibility of connecting devices running different operating systems.
  3. Maintains the quality of the transmitted image at the level of an HDMI cable. Supports resolutions up to 1920x1080 (FullHD), 5.1 sound.
  4. Giant companies Intel, AMD, MediaTek, Qualcomm, NVIDIA are interested in its development.
  5. There is no need to download additional software.

Flaws:

  1. Instability of connections, depending mainly on the quality of the devices.
  2. Unstandardized connection delay.

The Miracast standard is supported by operating systems:

  • Windows 8.1, 10, Phone 8.1, Windows 10 Mobile;
  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2 and higher.

Miracast Windows 10. How to enable

Windows 10 is capable of connecting devices to each other in two ways.

Path 1

1. Consistently click the required items in the following windows (see pictures).

Figure 2

Figure 3

Figure 4

Figure 5

2. Select your TV.

3. On the TV, approve the connection request.

4. If necessary, enter the suggested PIN code.

5. If the receiver and transmitter are compatible (see below), then a picture similar to the picture on the transmitting device will appear on the TV screen.

How to turn off the TV is shown below.

Figure 6

Path 2

1. Press the key combination “WIN + P”. Here WIN is a key with the WINDOWS logo, P is a key with a Latin letter (Fig. 7) and connect to the display.

Figure 7

2. Select your device from the proposed list. Before starting the search, do not forget to turn on the TV (Fig. 8).

Figure 8

After a successful connection, you will be able to see the same images on both devices.

Important Notes

  1. The TV must support the Miracast standard. If it does not provide this, you will have to use an HDMI adapter and download additional software.
  2. On TV, this technology may have a different name. For example, Samsung called this feature Screen Mirroring.

This article could end here, if not for one “but”. As noted above, the transmitter and receiver must be matched. TVs from well-known brands that support Smart TV since 2013 are manufactured with built-in Miracast receivers (Intel WiDi technology is compatible with Miracast technology).

Possible problems

  1. The device does not support the Miracast standard. This can happen either due to an old Wi-Fi adapter (released before 2013) or due to a problematic driver. In the first case, it is better to use an external adapter. In the second case, the problem can be solved by installing the latest driver, which can be downloaded from the website of the transmitting device manufacturer. This must also be done if Windows 10 itself downloaded and installed the chipset driver. If the manufacturer cannot offer the required driver for Windows 10, use the driver for Windows 8. Very often this helps.
  2. The device does not connect to the TV. After a long attempt to connect to the TV, the message shown in Fig. 9 appears on the screen of the Windows 10 device.

Figure 9

As in the first case, the problem can be solved by installing the latest driver obtained from the manufacturer of the transmitting device. It can be downloaded for free from the corresponding website. If the Wi-Fi adapter is not the latest, then due to incomplete compatibility of technologies, reinstalling the driver may not solve the problem. In this case, to watch movies, it is better to configure DLNA (a technology for connecting various devices into a digital network) in Windows 10.

Additional Notes

  1. The Miracast standard is not so advanced that it is completely impossible to connect devices using an HDMI cable. Now any computer or laptop has such a connector. In a pinch, an inexpensive adapter will do. In this case, the process of playing or watching a movie is guaranteed not to be spoiled by interruptions in the transmission of a video signal of guaranteed quality.
  2. The Miracast adapter can be used when traveling, visiting friends, and at small presentations. With its help, video from any mobile device can be transferred to any TV that has HDMI and USB ports (the USB port is used to power the device).
  3. In general, the Miracast standard, although extremely useful, has not yet been fully polished, and has not yet been able to find a worthy place for itself. He has everything ahead of him.

I finally figured out the wireless display feature in Windows 10. I spent half a day connecting and checking everything to prepare an article with verified information for you. And of course with photos and screenshots.

There are two main technologies: and Intel WiDi (Intel has stopped developing this technology), with which you can display image and sound from a computer, laptop or mobile devices via Wi-Fi. In other words, use the TV (projector, monitor) like a wireless display. The trick is that with the help of these technologies you can not just display a movie or photo on the screen “over the air” (as is the case with), but broadcast everything that happens on the main computer monitor or laptop screen.

A wireless display, which is most often a TV, works as if it were connected via an HDMI cable. You can duplicate the image, expand the screen, etc. And all this wirelessly. There are also monitors that support Miracast.

The Wireless Display feature in Windows 10 displays images using Miracast technology. But, for some reason, when connected, the TV had the inscription “Intel’s WiDi.” As it turned out (read on Intel website), they have stopped developing and supporting Intel® WiDi technology. And they report that Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 already have support for Miracast out of the box, which can be used to connect wireless displays without additional programs.

For everything to work, there must be Miracast support at the hardware and driver level. The Wi-Fi adapter that is built into your laptop or connected to your PC must support the wireless display function. The video adapter should also have such support.

I tested on the following equipment:

  • PC with Intel Core i3-6098P processor and GeForce GTX 750Ti graphics card. Wi-Fi adapter TP-Link TL-WN725N V2.
  • A laptop with an old third-generation Intel Core i3 processor and built-in Intel HD Graphics 4000 video. NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M video card. Wi-Fi adapter is the same TP-Link TL-WN725N V2. Because the adapter built into the laptop does not work.
  • I used an LG TV as a wireless display. The model is still 2012, but with support for Miracast and Intel WiDi. As it turns out, the new and sophisticated Philips TV does not have built-in support for Miracast. If your TV also does not support this technology, then you can use.

This connection works without a router, directly. There is no need to connect your computer (laptop) and TV to the same router.

In this article, I will first show you how to enable Miracast on Windows 10 and how to connect to a wireless display. Then, we will consider solutions to possible problems and errors.

Connecting to a wireless display (TV) in Windows 10 via Miracast

Press the keyboard shortcut Win+P(English) . A window should appear on the right with different options for displaying the image. And there should be an item "Connect to a wireless display". Click on it. If there is no such item, then most likely your hardware or driver does not support this function. At the end of the article I will write about this in more detail and show you how to perform the check.

It will begin searching for wireless displays and audio devices.

Most likely, you need to enable Miracast/Intel WiDi on your TV. In older LG models, this is done in the menu, in the "Network" section. Like this:

On new LG models, these settings most likely look different. On Samsung TVs, in the signal source selection menu you need to select "Screen Mirroring" (may not be available on all models). On Sony TV - "Screen mirroring" in signal sources (separate button on the remote control). On Philips TVs: in the "Settings" section - "Network settings" - "Wi-Fi Miracast". But on mine, which has Android TV, there is no such item.

If your TV does not have built-in Miracast support, you can buy a separate Miracast (Mirascreen) adapter. It connects to the HDMI port of the TV. Receives image and sound and outputs it to the TV.

The TV should appear in the search results. Just select it and the connection process will begin.

It will say "Follow the instructions on the device screen." In my case, you need to confirm the computer connection on the TV.

All is ready!

If you fail to connect the first time, don’t give up. Try again. Reboot your devices. Something didn’t work out for me the first time either.

You can change the projection mode. For example, expand the screens, or use only the second (TV connected via Miracast). Or duplicate the image on both screens.

There you can disconnect from the wireless display.

Connection by adding a new device in the settings

There is another way. In Settings, go to the "Devices" section and select "Add a Bluetooth or other device." Then click on "Wireless Display or Dock".

Turn on Miracast on your TV and it should appear in the list. Select your TV and establish a connection.

Maybe this method will be more suitable for someone.

Sound control when connected via Miracast

Just like an HDMI cable, Miracast also transmits sound. For me, immediately after connecting, the sound from the computer was output through the TV speakers. The default device was "Digital Output". And this is not always convenient. Therefore, in order to get the sound from the playback through your laptop speakers or speakers, you just need to change the default playback device.

After this, the sound will be played through the computer speakers. If necessary, you can return "Digital Output" to the default device.

Miracast does not work and there is no "Connect to a wireless display" option

In older versions of Windows 10, when the system "understood" that Miracast was not supported, it displayed the message "The PC or mobile device does not support Miracast, so wireless projection from it is not possible."

In new versions, there is simply no “Connect to a wireless display” item in the “Project” menu, which is opened by the Win + P key combination.

Most likely, there is no Miracast support at the Wi-Fi adapter level. For example, I have no way to connect to a wireless display through the Wi-Fi module built into my laptop. The laptop, however, is not new. Somewhere around 2012-13. And after connecting the TP-Link TL-WN725N V2 Wi-Fi adapter, everything works.

For this function to work, you need support on the side of the Wi-Fi adapter and graphics adapter (video card). Both at the hardware and driver level. This is easy to check.

Launch Command Prompt and run the command netsh wlan show driver.

The results will contain the line "Wireless display supported:" With the factory (old) Wi-Fi module on the laptop I have the following result:

As you can see, there is no support. The graphics driver supports it, but Wi-Fi does not.

And here is the result of testing with another Wi-Fi adapter:

And with this configuration everything works great.

What can be done:

  • Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver. It's unlikely, but it might work. Here are the instructions: .
  • If, according to the test results, the problem is only in Wi-Fi, then you can replace the Wi-Fi adapter itself. But I noticed that the specifications simply do not indicate whether there is support for a wireless display or not. On the TP-Link TL-WN725N second hardware version (V2) everything works. But I'm sure there are a large number of other adapters that support Miracast. Need to find.
  • It might be easier for you.

Let's consider another problem.

Failed to connect to wireless display

The computer finds the TV, select it, it takes a long time to connect and the error “Failed to connect” appears. Or the computer does not see the TV and it does not appear in the list of available devices.

I also got this error several times. It's difficult to say what this is connected with. Be sure to try connecting again.

  • Restart your computer and turn off the TV's power for a couple of minutes.
  • This may be due to a bad signal. If possible, reduce the distance between the computer and the TV. Check if Miracast is active (Or something like that) on TV.
  • Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver. I provided a link to the instructions above.
  • If possible, try connecting to another TV that can also work as a wireless display.

Update: Evgeniy shared a solution in the comments, which, as it turned out, helped not only him. The problem was the following: the computer found the TV, as shown in the instructions above. But when I tried to connect, the screen flashed on the TV and an error appeared: “The connection request from... failed. You can try again from your mobile device.”

Disabling the discrete video card in Device Manager helped. I don’t know to what extent this is the right decision, because we are essentially disabling the high-performance video adapter. But it seems to be working. You can try it. We go to the device manager and disable the discrete video card, leaving the integrated one working.

Don't forget to turn it back on later. When you stop using the wireless display, or it turns out that this solution did not help in your case.

Update: disable antivirus and firewall

There have already been several comments that Miracast in Windows 10 started working after disabling the antivirus or firewall.

Try disabling your installed antivirus for a while. You can also try disabling Windows Defender Firewall. If you know which rule in the firewall settings blocks the operation of a wireless display and how to add it to the exceptions, please write in the comments.

I spent a lot of time and effort on this article. I hope not in vain. If you have anything to add or want to ask a question, I’m waiting for you in the comments. Best wishes!

First there was HDMI, not quite, but HDMI has been the primary way to transfer video and audio from devices to a TV or external monitor for over a decade.

However, a few years ago, a new competitor appeared - Miracast. This is a technology that promises to connect computers and devices of all kinds of screens, without the use of wires and without the need for any special equipment.

What is Miracast and what does it do?

Miracast is a technology that allows you to create a wireless connection on a computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, projector or external monitor.

This is called a screencast (or projection screen) and means it can stream the image and audio stream from the device to the TV or external monitor to which you establish a wireless connection.

This basically does the same thing as an HDMI cable. Some even call it "HDMI Wi-Fi" or "Wireless HDMI".

The Wi-Fi Alliance launched a certification program called Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ in 2012 and since then, many electronic device manufacturers have adopted this standard.

It received a lot of support from Intel in the early days, probably because Intel had its own solution called Intel WiDi when Miracast was not yet released.

How Miracast works

Miracast is a standard that relies on Wi-Fi Direct wireless network connections, which allows you to stream video to an external display with a maximum resolution of Full HD 1080p and 5.1 surround sound.

This means that the network works by creating a direct connection between the wireless device and the external screen.

It doesn't need your wireless home network. One way or another, this technology is very similar to ad hoc networks.

To connect to an external screen, the device creates a wireless network using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) and WPA2 network standards, ensuring completely secure communication between them.

Miracast has a nice feature: it doesn't care what video or audio you stream from your device to your external display.

You can transfer copy-protected files, DVD movies, music CDs and any other type, regardless of the codecs or formats used.

How to use Miracast

The Miracast standard is relatively new, having been released in late 2012, but has received attention from many major companies in the tech world. As a result, you can use it on a large number of devices.

Miracast supports Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile, Google Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and newer versions, many Smart TVs.

If your TV or external monitor does not support this technology, you can simply buy an adapter that connects to the HDMI port.

There are many options to choose from - here are some examples of popular adapters: Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, Acer MWA2 MHL and Streaming Stick HDMI EZCast PNI

How to enable Miracast

Connecting devices to external displays using Miracast is a simple process, but a lot depends on the platform and operating system.

Miracast - technological advantages and disadvantages

There are many benefits to using Miracast technology, so there is a chance that more and more people and companies will adopt this standard in the near future. Here are some of them:

  • It will help you get rid of the cable and establish a wireless connection.
  • Connections between devices are very easy to set up.
  • You don't need an HDMI port on your smartphone or tablet to use an external display.
  • You don't need a wireless network in your home. You don't even need a router.
  • You can take the adapter with you when you travel and use it to stream video from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to any TV or display with an HDMI or USB port, depending on the adapter you use.

Like everything else in this world, Miracast has its drawbacks. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Stability issues – Although the technology is certified, devices are designed to be fast and easy to connect with, and some Miracast connections are not stable. This largely depends on the quality of the devices you use.
  • Connection delay is not standardized. This means that you may see delays between what is displayed on the device being transmitted and the screen showing the image.

Technologies from Google and Apple, AirPlay, are a little better because they allow you to multitask.

Overall, this is a great technology that could change the way screens interact.

Imagine all the screens in your home transmitting video and audio wirelessly.

Imagine being able to connect your smartphone or tablet to any nearby screen.

If technology continues to improve all the time, we will be able to completely eliminate the cables we use to connect screens. Good luck.

There are many different technologies available to transfer images to a monitor or TV using wireless Internet. One of them is miracast. The program is very simple and is supported on laptops and computers running Windows 7 or 10. In this post we will tell you how to enable miracast on Windows 7 or 10.

How to enable miracast in Windows 7, 10 step by step

The process of connecting miracast in Windows 7 or 10 is a fairly easy task that almost anyone can handle, even those who are poorly versed in technology. To do this, you only need to press a combination of two keys on your keyboard - Win + P (the first key looks like the Windows logo, and P is a regular Latin letter).

Then the computer will offer you options from which you will need to choose - “Connect to a wireless display.” Then the search for wireless displays will begin. The search will offer you several options at once. Select yours from the entire list and turn it on. As a result of the work done, the miracast connection starts. Don't worry if this process takes a long time - sometimes the connection takes some time. However, later, if everything was connected correctly, you will see an image on your monitor screen. It should be noted that the process of enabling miracast on Windows 10 is completely similar to enabling miracast on Windows 7 and does not require any other knowledge or actions.

What to do if miracast does not work on Windows 7 or 10?

As we previously reported, the process of enabling miracast in windows 7 or 10 is very easy. However, even in this case, there are often failures, and everything does not happen the way the user wants.

It happens that the “Connect to a wireless display” option is not displayed on the screen of your device. There may be two reasons for this. The first is that the Wi-Fi adapter does not support miracast. The second is that the necessary drivers for the Wi-Fi adapter to work are missing.

It should also be noted that if your equipment was released before 2013, then we can assume that it simply does not support miracast. Such cases also happen. And if the laptop or computer was released

after this year, then most likely the reason lies in the drivers of the wireless network adapter.

How to fix this? Go to the official website of the manufacturer of your equipment or Wi-Fi adapter and download the official WLAN drivers, and then install them on your computer.

Good luck with the process of connecting miracast in Windows 7 or 10!

Over the past ten years, everyone has become so accustomed to HDMI as an interface for transmitting audio and video that the transition to new technologies raises some questions. Although the recently released Miracast from Microsoft promises to be more convenient and advanced in this regard. Therefore, today you can download Miracast for Windows 10 and try it, as they say, in action.

Miracast is the best solution for wireless picture transmission

The new technology allows you to transmit video and audio signals between multiple devices. The main thing is that they have the appropriate drivers. If there are none, then you can always download Miracast for free for Windows 10 Russian version and use the wireless interface. Which, by the way, is quite convenient.

  • This is a wireless connection method that eliminates the need for inconvenient cables;
  • Setting up acceptance of audio and video streams between devices is not particularly difficult;
  • The smartphone may not have an HDMI port for setting up broadcasting;
  • There is no need for either a wireless network or a router itself;
  • The adapter is easy to take with you almost everywhere.

To use this new product, you sometimes need to download Miracast for Windows 10, and also have a Wi-Fi adapter with you. In addition, one of the devices must have the latest OS. But this usually does not cause any problems.

There are some difficulties with the fact that older TV models do not support this technology. Although such difficulties can be solved by purchasing a special adapter. All you need to enjoy wireless picture transmission is to install the software from this page. It even works on older PCs. If you have any difficulties with the installation, be sure to write to us, we will tell you how to resolve them.

But there shouldn’t be any difficulties, everything is quite simple. Use the installer from this page, run it and follow all the instructions on the screen. It's no more difficult than installing any other software, for example. Moreover, the installer is also in Russian, and not just the program itself. After the installation is complete, go to the device settings and look for the “Connected devices” item to detect the Wi-Fi module.

Please note that the technology does not work without a Wi-Fi module, but if you have a laptop running Windows 10, then you probably have this module. And if you have a desktop PC, you will probably have to purchase it separately. There are special separate boards that work as external Wi-Fi modules.
