Find out the password for your wifi windows 7. How to find out the password for your wifi on your computer

Users often forget their Wi-Fi password because the computer automatically connects to the wireless network. Then, after a while, when you need to connect another new device to the wireless network: a laptop, smartphone or tablet, the user has a question about how to find out the Wi-Fi password.

Wireless Internet access adapters via Wi-Fi are most often used on laptops and mobile devices. Wireless data transfer technology allows you to move the device within the reach of the signal from the access point, without being tied to one place, as with a wired connection.

Typically, users enter a password once when connecting a device to the network, and then the connection occurs automatically. Over time, the user conveniently forgot the password for his Wi-Fi. One day, you need to connect a new device to a wireless network, but the password is forgotten or lost. What to do, how to find out the password for your Wi-Fi?

In this article we will look at instructions on how to find out the Wi-Fi password on a computer in the Windows operating system of different versions, using wireless connection data using the command line in the router settings.

In Windows, you can find out the Wi-Fi password on your computer if your desktop PC or laptop is currently connected to a Wi-Fi wireless network. You will need to enter the wireless network settings; this can be done in several ways, all of them are described in the article.

Windows Command Prompt will help you find the Wi-Fi password on a computer that is not connected to a wireless network. For example, in a situation where the setting for automatically connecting to a wireless network was not saved on the computer. It was necessary to connect via Wi-Fi again, the system requires entering the network password, but the user does not remember it.

Prerequisite: this PC must have previously been connected to this Wi-Fi network at least once.

  1. At first .
  2. In the command line interpreter window, enter the command and then press the Enter key:
netsh wlan show profiles

The window will display user profiles: the names of the networks to which this computer has ever been connected at different times.

  1. Enter the following command, followed by the name of the desired wireless network:
netsh wlan show profile name=network_name key=clear

If there are spaces in the network name, enter the name in quotes, for example, name=”XXX X” .

How to find out the password for your Wi-Fi on your computer (video)

As statistics show, most of us, after setting up a Wi-Fi point once and connecting our devices to it, forget the password to the Wi-Fi network. So what to do if you forgot the password to your Wi-Fi access point? If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password, there are several options to solve this problem:

Option No. 1 - Go to the router settings and look at the password in the settings, but for this you need the password from the router

Option No. 2 - if you don’t remember the password to the router, you will have to reset the router settings and configure it again

Option number 3 - but if you have a computer with the Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system already connected to this Wi-Fi network - then there is an easier and faster way. We will talk about it in that article.

Find out the password for the WiFi network in Windows 7. If Windows 7 is installed on your computer, then go to “Network and Sharing Center” (Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center) and select in the menu on the left side of the window menu item “Manage wireless networks”

A window will open with a list of all wireless networks to which you have ever connected. Select the network from which you want to find out the password and double-click on its icon with the left mouse button. The Wireless Network Properties window will open:

Select the “Security” tab. The last field on this tab is called “Network Security Key”, and it contains the password for the Wi-Fi network. But by default, it is displayed in a closed form; in order to see the password, you will need to check the “Display entered characters” box. Now you have found out the password for your Wi-Fi network.

Since the Manage Wireless Networks option was removed in Windows 7 SP1, I decided to specify another alternative path to the “Wireless Network Properties” window: In the lower right corner of the taskbar near the clock, click on the network icon and select “Network and Sharing Center” .

The familiar “Network and Sharing Center” window will open, only this time in the left menu we will select “Change adapter settings”

In the window that opens, select the icon of your wireless network and right-click on it, in the submenu that opens, click on the “Status” item, in the next window “Wireless Network Properties”, and then, as in the first option, select the “Security” tab and check the box “Display entered characters”

Note. To display the network security key, you will need administrator rights.

Finding out the WiFi Password in Windows 8 is even easier than in Windows 7. Move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner of the screen. A menu will open, in it you need to select Settings:

In the lower left corner we find the Network icon. We click on it. A list of wireless networks will open. Select the network you need and right-click on it. If you have a tablet with Windows 8, you just need to click on the network and hold it. The wireless network menu will open:

Select View connection properties. The same window will open as in Windows 7:

Go to the Security tab. Check the box next to Display entered characters. This is the password for your Wi-Fi network.

How to find out the password for your wifi (wifi) network - 3 ways

With the development of technologies in the IT direction, everything is changing dramatically. Step by step we notice the era of the rebirth of the Internet. Just 15 years ago, middle-class people could only dream of a Dial-UP connection, and some did not know about its existence.

A few years later, the average client of the cable telephone network could connect to the Internet using TCP-IP, which already developed speeds of up to 1 megabit and was constantly being improved. It is worth noting that this data transfer technology existed back in the 80s to transfer information between military bases.

Over the past 10 years, the capacity and backbone networks of Internet providers have been steadily growing and already cover more than 80% of the world. The most popular connection standards now are LTE (this standard is very popular today and is planning its further development in general), Ethernet (PPPoE) and Wi-Fi. It is the latter type of connection that will be discussed further.

Wi-Fi network – access everywhere and always!

To connect to Wi-Fi Internet, you just need to select the required network that your smart device, tablet, PDA, computer, laptop or other portable device that supports this standard can see and enter the password.

For some reason, many users of the same home networks for which they set a password themselves do not remember it, so they cannot connect with a new device or an old one (after resetting the settings). This situation, of course, can be solved, everything is very elementary! Below are several options for connecting to a Wi-Fi network through various devices and systems.

How to find out the wifi password through a computer with windows 7?

To find out the password for the network to which you are connected in Windows 7 or Windows 8 (the interfaces of these systems in this regard are of the same type and all actions are the same).

So what you need to do:

In the tray (in the lower right corner, between the clock and the keyboard layout language) you can see the Wi-Fi network icon.

Click on the icon and you will see the following drop-down window:

In this window, you need to select the network for which you want to find out the password (if you did not enter the password, you will not be able to find out it).

Right-click on the network, in our case it is called DIR-615. Select “properties” from the pop-up menu.

A new window will appear with the following content:

The password is in the third line, but for security it is hidden from strangers.

To see it, just check the “display entered characters” checkbox.

Please note: In order to display the password, you will need administrator rights. If you are in a guest account or a user not granted this authority, you will not be able to find out the password using this method!

How to find out the Wi-Fi password through a router?

This option is perhaps the most effective and affordable, but requires more steps. If the computer owner has not changed the standard access data for the router, this is only to his advantage (and, as practice shows, more than 95% of Internet users do).

So, we need to go to the address of the router itself. There can be several search options, for example: http://192.168.0.1/, or http://192.168.0.0/, or http://192.168.1.0/, or http://192.168.1.1/.

If you have selected the correct address, but you may see the following window options:

This is the standard window of most little-known manufacturers, as well as routers that are older than 2010 (at that time they did not yet have a user-friendly interface).

As you can see, in our case, the address http://192.168.0.1/ is suitable for the D-Link DIR-615 router.

Now you need to choose a username and password. In 70% of cases this is the admin/admin pair, but in the other 30% it can be the login/password phrases: root, user. You can select a series of numbers for the password field, in the form: 123456, 12345, 1234567890, 0000, 1111, 11111, etc. In this case, the most common option was suitable.

Now you need to find where to see the password for the router in the menu. Most routers have different interfaces, but the structure is the same. The names may differ only partially, but their meaning is the same. For more convenient navigation, you should switch to advanced settings mode.

The Wi-Fi subsection contains security settings, which is what we need. We follow the link and a window appears with approximately the following content:

You need an encryption key (this is the password for the Wi-Fi network). You can enter it on any other device and connect to the Internet.

How to find out the Wi-Fi encryption key through your phone?

Finally, I would like to consider the option of how you can view the Wi-Fi password using a phone connected to the router. The example will be considered for the Android operating network, since it is one of the most used operating systems with a coverage of more than 60% of the global market.

The process of obtaining a password in this case is not available to everyone, but only to advanced users who have rooted their device (gained superuser rights). Otherwise, you will not be able to find out the password.

Before starting the procedure, make sure that this Wi-Fi exists on your phone.

After making sure that the required network is available on the device, open any file manager that works with system files. In our case, it became the standard ES File Explorer, which is preinstalled on many phones from China by default. Go to the system root directory:

Here you will see many folders with files which are system libraries and settings files. Do not change them under any circumstances! This may cause your phone to not work. Follow the path: Data --> Misk --> Wifi. The last file in the folder will be wpa_supplicant.conf. The file extension indicates that this is a configuration (settings) file. You can open such files with any text editor. In the screenshot, the file is opened with the standard reader of the ES File Explorer manager.

Among the list of all the networks you connected to, find the SSID with the name Wi-Fi for which you want to find out the password. The next line is psk. This will be the password for this wi-fi network.

If you are afraid or unsure that you can do everything correctly, we recommend downloading the WiFi Key Recovery program. Unfortunately, it also requires Root rights, but can easily display the entire list of wifi passwords.

Results of our topic - How to find out the password for your wifi (wifi) network:

To summarize, I would like to say that you can only find out the password to a wifi network if the network administrator, or you yourself, have not protected yourself from hacking. To protect your wifi network from access by unauthorized people, follow the basic rules:

  • Do not disclose your password to anyone
  • For strangers, create separate accounts that do not have administrator rights, and they will not be able to display the hidden password on the PC.
  • Change the password and login to log into the router. But don’t forget it, because then you will have to reflash it and re-register the network connection parameters.

If you yourself have forgotten your password, then any of the above methods will help you recover the forgotten information! We hope for your positive feedback on this article and repost, because it can help solve the problem not only for you, but also for your friends, who will also find it useful to remember their wifi password.

How to find out your Wi-Fi password, or what to do if you forgot your password?

In every article on setting up a router, or in instructions on changing passwords, I advise you to write down somewhere the password that you set for your home Wi-Fi. Or set a password that you definitely won’t forget, but at the same time, it should be strong enough. As you understand, few people do this, to be honest, I don’t write anything down either :) And the password is such a thing that if you forget it, it’s very difficult to remember, you’ll try a bunch of options and nothing will work. And here you just need to connect a new device to your Wi-Fi. In this article I will tell you what to do in such cases. How to remember a forgotten password for a Wi-Fi network, where to look it up in the settings of your computer or the router itself. I will try to write in detail about all the nuances, possible problems and not miss anything.

How can you find out your forgotten Wi-Fi password:

  • View the password in the computer settings if you have already connected (or are connected) to a network for which we need to find out the password.
  • View the password in the Wi-Fi router settings.
  • Reset the router, configure it again and set a new password.

We'll start with the simplest thing, which is, of course, the computer. If you have a laptop (or PC with an adapter) that has already been connected to your Wi-Fi, or is currently connected, then most likely we will be able to look in the settings for the password that we have successfully forgotten.

Looking up a forgotten Wi-Fi password on a computer: windows 7, 8, 10

Many people ask where to find this password on a computer? In Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 this is not difficult to do, but XP has its own problems. Let's look at newer versions of windows first. On seven and eight everything is almost the same.

Attention! Your computer from which you want to remember the network key must be connected to this network. If he connected to it before, that’s fine too. If you do not have such a computer, then go straight to the section where we will look at the password in the router settings.

And one more thing: if you don’t want to mess around with the settings, you can try to do everything with the WirelessKeyView program, which I wrote about a little lower.

Go to Network and Sharing Center.

Seva select Manage wireless networks.

You'll see a list of all the networks you've previously connected to. Find the network for which you need to remember the password, right-click on it and select Properties.

In the new window, go to the Security tab, check the box next to Display entered characters and look at our password in the Network Security Key field.

Let's take a quick look at the possible problems you may encounter.

What should I do if there is no “Manage wireless networks” item, or if the password is not displayed after checking the box?

These are very popular problems. There may most likely be no management of wireless networks due to the fact that you do not have Wi-Fi configured on your computer at all (in this case, you will definitely not be able to view the password using this method). Or, I read somewhere that this could be due to the home version of Windows. What to do if there is no "Wireless Network Management"? You can view the password through the router, read about it below, or try doing this:

You will succeed under one condition: you must be connected to the network from which you want to view the password.

If, after checking the “Display entered characters” checkbox, the password does not appear, then try looking at it in the router settings. Or, try from another computer, if possible.

How to find the Wi-Fi password in Windows XP? We use the WirelessKeyView program

As I wrote above, XP is a little more complicated. In principle, you can see everything there too, but not as easily as on Windows 7. Therefore, I advise you not to go into this jungle, but to use the free WirelessKeyView program. Which, by the way, also works great in newer versions of Windows. What does the little program WirelessKeyView do? It displays all the networks to which the computer on which you launched it previously connected. And of course, it displays the saved passwords for these networks.

Everything is very simple. Download the program from the official website http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html. Open the archive and run the file "WirelessKeyView.exe". The program will open, look for your network there (by name), and in the Key (Ascii) field look at the password for it. It looks like this:

Agree, everything is very simple and clear. Even on Windows 7 and 8, you don’t have to bother with finding the password in the settings. Very good program, thanks to its developers. The only thing is that your antivirus can swear at it. Probably because of its slightly spy purpose.

Where is the Wi-Fi password in the router settings?

Another proven method. If you can set a password in the router settings, you can view it there. And even if it doesn’t work out, you can set a new password. If you were unable to view the key in the computer settings, there is no computer connected via Wi-Fi, and the WirelessKeyView program also failed, then all that remains is the router itself. Well, or reset the settings, but this is a last resort.

Another good thing about this method is that you can even access the settings from your phone or tablet. Provided they are already connected. You just can’t see the password on a mobile device, at least I don’t know how to do it. Although, there may already be some programs for Android (but they will most likely need Root rights).

I think it’s best to separately show how to view the password on a router from a specific manufacturer. Let's look at the most popular companies.

We look at the key to the Wi-Fi network on Tp-Link

We will start, as usual, with Tp-Link routers. We need to go into settings. We connect to the router via cable or Wi-Fi (which is very unlikely, because you don’t know the password :)). In the browser, open the address 192.168.1.1 (possibly 192.168.0.1) and specify the username and password. The default is admin and admin.

To view the installed key, go to the Wireless tab - Wireless Security. The Wireless Password field will contain a password.

Remembering the password on Asus routers

Everything is about the same. Go to the settings, if you don’t know how, then see the detailed instructions. The address used is the same - 192.168.1.1.

In the settings, right on the main screen there is a System Status item, where the password is indicated. Just place your cursor in the "WPA-PSK Key" field. Like this:

By the way, you may also find the instructions for changing the password on Asus useful.

Finding out a forgotten password on D-Link

I already wrote how to do this in the article: How to change the password on a D-Link Wi-Fi router? And how to find out a forgotten password. But I couldn’t help but write about it here, because D-Link is very popular. This means that we also need to go to the settings and go to the Wi-Fi - Security Settings tab. In the "PSK encryption key" field you will see the password itself.

We look at the password for ZyXEL

Go to the settings of your ZyXEL Keenetic router, I wrote how to do this here. Go to the Wi-Fi network tab (bottom) and in the “Network key” field you will see the password itself, which is currently set and which you have forgotten.

Well, just in case, here are instructions for changing your password.

If you forgot your password on your Tenda router

This means that on Tenda routers we go to the control panel in the same way, go to the Wireless settings - Wireless Security tab and look at the password in the "Key" field.

Well, according to tradition - instructions for changing the key :)

On a Linksys router

Let's take a look at Linksys devices. We do everything according to the scheme: go to the control panel, go to the Wireless network - Wireless network security tab. The Passphrase field contains the password for the Wi-Fi network.

That's all, as you can see, nothing complicated.

What to do if nothing helps?

I think that there is only one way left, this is to reset all the settings and passwords of your router and configure everything again. You can configure it according to the instructions that you will find on our website in the “Setting up a router” section.

I tried to collect on this page all the possible ways in which you can recover a forgotten Wi-Fi password. If something didn’t work out for you, or some points from the article are not very clear, then write about it in the comments, we’ll figure it out. And of course, I will be grateful for new and useful information on this topic.

How to find out the password for your Wi-Fi network and is it really necessary?

Very often you hear - what should I do? I forgot the password for my Wi-Fi network? In fact, finding out the password for your Wi-Fi network is quite simple, especially if you are already connected to it with a laptop and you just need to add another device to the network (tablet, phone).

Before you start with determining the password for the Wi-Fi network, you should think about whether it is needed, since most Wi-Fi routers have a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button. This button makes it possible to quickly, simply and safely set up a wireless network without delving into the intricacies of Wi-Fi and encryption protocols, for example, here's how to connect to Wi-Fi without knowing the password on Android devices. If, however, a WPS connection is not suitable for you, let’s move on to one of the ways to find out the password for your Wi-Fi network. The method described below is suitable if you are connected to a wireless network from a computer/laptop (i.e. you previously registered a password and forgot it) on the windows7 or windows8 operating system.

How to find out the password for a Wi-Fi network in Windows 7/Windows 8.

In order to find out the password in Windows7, you need to go to the Network and Sharing Center. In this article I will describe two ways to do this.

Click "Start" - "Control Panel"

Select "Network and Sharing Center" (the View field should have Small icons),

Right-click on the Wi-Fi icon and select "Network and Sharing Center"

In Windows 8, the procedure for launching the Network and Sharing Center is slightly different; you can use the second method from Windows 7, or you can press the + key combination, enter Control Center... and select the item you are looking for.

The following steps are absolutely similar for the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.

Select "Change adapter settings"

Select a wireless network, double-click on it. Let me remind you that you must be connected to the Wi-Fi network from which you want to find out the password.

Click the "Wireless Network Properties" button.

Go to the "Security" tab, check the "Display entered icons" checkbox and in the Network Security Key field you will see the password for the Wi-Fi network.

If this method does not help you, all you have to do is look at or change the password on the router. To do this, you need to find out the IP address of the router, go to its web interface and look at the Wi-Fi password there. Since routers have different web interfaces and in one article I will not describe how to find out/change the password, I recommend going to the page where the Wi-Fi network settings of various routers are described in detail, select yours and, according to the article, view or change the Wi-Fi network password.

Note: all options work regardless of the provider Rostelecom, Byfly, Ukrtelecom, Beeline, Yota, MTS or a regular home computer or laptop with Windows 7, Windows 8 (8.1).

The fastest way to check your Wi-Fi router password

There are simple and straightforward solutions to easily check the current WiFi password in the Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system.

There are notification icons in the lower right corner - One of them is an abbreviation for Internet access.

Lightly click LMB on the icon with semicircular stripes to see the availability of wifi networks.

Then select RMB of the current Internet and click on “Properties” in the context menu (not sure if this works on Windows 8).

If you want to see the access key assigned to this network, use the option (check the box next to this line) “Show symbols”.

If you did everything correctly, you should see the current password to protect your wireless network.

If this path does not resolve the issue due to lack of administrator rights, please read the following additional solutions below.

How to find out the Wi-Fi password using the WirlessKeyView program

Another very simple and quick way to install a program that is absolutely free on the Internet or is WirlessKeyView.

After downloading (if from my website), select the appropriate version of WirlessKeyView - there are two of them, 32-bit and 64-bit.

If you have previously used multiple wireless networks, you will see all the access keys stored in your Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system.

Choose the one you are interested in and write it down in a notepad or on a piece of paper.

NOTE: If you have a tp link router or a Samsung laptop, lenovo, asus or any other program will definitely find all saved passwords. Good luck.

Most users, having entered the wireless network key on the router, remember it when they need to connect a new device. In this article, we will take a closer look at where to find the Wi-Fi password and, if necessary, change it.

Description of the problem

Often we don’t think about saving the password after entering it in the router settings for the first time. Each of us asks the question: how to find out the Wi-Fi password when there is a need to connect a new device to a wireless network.

Search methods

You can recover your password if a PC or laptop is connected to the wireless network. Next, we'll figure out how to do this.

Using computer network settings

Let's look at a way to recover a password on a computer with the Windows 7 operating system. It is also relevant for systems: Windows 8, 8.1, 10 - the only difference is in the display of the Network Control Center. To do this you need:

  1. On a computer connected to the Internet, click on the picture of a working network, which is located in the lower right corner of the desktop. LMB-click on it and select “Network and Sharing Center”.
  2. In the window that appears, from the proposed options, select the item “Manage wireless networks” and click on it with LMB.

  3. In the window that appears, you need to select the shortcut labeled “Wireless network connection” or the name of your provider and right-click on it, select “Properties” from the suggested items.
  4. Next, you need to go to the “Security” tab. In the line “Network security key” the text will be hidden; you need to check the box “Display entered characters”. Your password will be displayed, you can copy it to the clipboard and save it in a text document or write it down in notepad.

Using router settings

Advice! The IP address, login and password for opening network settings can be found on the back of the router.

The second method is to use a router, namely finding the password in the configuration settings. Let's look at the example of the TP-LINK router; to do this, we will do the following:

You can also change the password to a more convenient one by entering a new key in the “Wireless Network Password” field. After this, be sure to save the changes. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.

Option #1– Go to the router settings and look at the password in the settings, but for this you need the password from the router

Option No. 2– if you don’t remember the password to the router, you will have to reset the router settings and configure it again

Option #3– but if you have a computer with the Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system already connected to this Wi-Fi network, then there is an easier and faster way. We will talk about it in that article.

Find out the password for the WiFi network in Windows 7.

If Windows 7 is installed on your computer, then go to (Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center) and in the menu on the left side of the window, select the “Manage Wireless Networks” menu item.

A window will open with a list of all wireless networks to which you have ever connected. Select the network from which you want to find out the password and double-click on its icon with the left mouse button. A window will open "Wireless Network Properties":

Select a tab "Safety". The last field on this tab is called "Network security key" it contains the password for the Wi-Fi network. But by default, it is displayed in a closed form; in order to see the password you will need to tick the box “Display entered characters”. Now you have found out the password for your Wi-Fi network.

Since the punt was removed in Windows 7 SP1 Wireless Network Management I decided to indicate another alternative path to the window "Wireless Network Properties": In the lower right corner of the taskbar near the clock, click on the network icon and select "Network and Sharing Center".

A familiar window will open "Network and Sharing Center", only this time in the left menu we will select the item "Change adapter settings"

In the window that opens, select the icon of your wireless network and right-click on it, in the submenu that opens, click on the item "State", in the next window "Wireless Network Properties" Well, then, as in the first option, select the tab "Safety" and put a tick “Display entered characters”

Note. To display the network security key, you will need administrator rights.

How to find out the WiFi password in Windows 8.

To know WiFi password in Windows 8 even easier than in Windows 7. Move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner of the screen. A menu will open, in it you need to select the item Options:

In the lower left corner we find the icon Net. We click on it. A list of wireless networks will open. Select the network you need and right-click on it. If you have a tablet with Windows 8, you just need to click on the network and hold it. The wireless network menu will open:

Select an item View connection properties. The same window will open as in Windows 7:

Go to the tab Safety. Check the box Display entered characters. This is the password for your Wi-Fi network.
