Apple created the notch for a reason. Marketers understood perfectly well what such a decision would lead to. They knew that others would begin to follow the trend set by Apple. And so it happened. MWC 2018 gave us an idea of where the market will move in 2018. And if Android fans chuckled at the notch in the display, now they will have to come to terms with it, because almost all flagship - and not only flagship - smartphones will now have a notch.

Below I will present all the smartphones that I know of with a notched display, and at the same time I will comment on each of the solutions.

The photo below is Lite. He looks, frankly, terrible. The cutout at the top is okay, but why then make such a huge frame at the bottom? You need to choose one of the two, otherwise the meaning of one of the decisions is lost. Or you make a frame at the bottom, as Xiaomi did with Mi MIX 2, or a cutout in the display. Otherwise, the end result is a mess of everything incomprehensible.

In the case of OnePlus 6, the situation is slightly better, because the frame at the bottom is noticeably smaller and almost equal to the side frames. However, due to the enlarged lower frame, the smartphone still looks weaker than the iPhone X. Although, of course, better solutions from Huawei.

One of the Huawei P20 renders also appeared on the Internet. It’s still difficult to say what model this is, but it can be characterized with one rhetorical question: why is this button at the bottom needed? The smartphone looks ridiculous, and let's admit it.

The photo below shows the flagship device from Oppo. And so far this is the best implementation of a notch in the display, because there is no bottom frame to spoil the whole effect. Oppo was copied, they did it blatantly, but they succeeded, unlike the others.

Vernee M7

Vernee M7 was also presented at MWC, but the manufacturer limited itself to describing the characteristics, without naming the price and release date of the new product. The photo shows that, like the previous model on the list, the smartphone is similar to the iPhone X in terms of the general concept, but has a more budget-friendly implementation. The frames of the device are wider, the characteristics are more modest, the new product definitely does not cost more than $150-200.

The smartphone body has a glossy panel on the back, a cutout above the screen, and the display itself is based on a 5.85-inch matrix with a 19.5:9 format. The resolution is not mentioned, but given the MT6750 chipset, this is probably a variation on the HD+ theme. Random access memory They promise 4 GB, storage – 64 GB. Oukitel U18

Oukitel U18 is another smartphone that looks like the iPhone X from the front. This device is priced at $180. Interestingly, the manufacturer claims to use a matrix with proportions of 21:9, but at the same time its resolution (1512x720) and diagonal (5.85"). Either the Chinese live in different worlds, or they have some secret techniques of their own calculating the characteristics of the screen, but “miracles” clearly take place: after all, with the stated aspect ratio of 21:9, the display resolution should be 1680x720, but not 1512x720.

The characteristics of Oukitel U18 are typical for inexpensive Chinese devices. It is equipped with an MT6750 chipset (and when they run out of stock, it’s time to switch to Helio P2x in 2018), 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of permanent memory. Elephone A4 Pro

Elephone A4 Pro is the most shrouded in mystery smartphone, similar to the iPhone X. Its official announcement took place on March 6, but there are still no detailed specifications of the device. Only some characteristics of the Elephone A4 Pro are known and the fact that the minimum price for it will be $100. With such a price tag they promise MediaTek chipset Helio P23, which is very tempting. But Elephone wouldn’t be itself if there weren’t some little catch here.

You can’t guarantee 100%, but the experience of meeting previous models of the company's smartphones (for example, Elephone S7) shows that the minimum price tag is usually given for a simplified modification of the new product. So we cannot exclude a scenario in which for $100 you can buy a conditional Elephone A4 based on MT6737 and with 2/16 GB of memory, and for a model with console Pro they will ask for 2 times more.

Market monitoring shows that so far (in March 2018) there are not many smartphones similar to the iPhone X. But given the experience of the past, we can say with confidence that there will soon be much more of them. After all, just like a year ago, devices with 18:9 screens were rare, but in the second half of 2017 everyone began to actively catch up. Now almost all manufacturers have models with such screens.

Sony Xperia Z3

New Sony flagship has a smaller screen than the iPhone 6 Plus: “only” 5.2 inches (the resolution is the same as the iPhone 6 Plus). But a huge advantage of the Xperia Z line is its dust and moisture resistance. Like the Galaxy S5, the Z3 can even call an aquarium. Another “killer feature” of the Z3 is support for PlayStation 4 games (if you have the console itself nearby). A camera with a resolution of 20.7 megapixels takes very good pictures and allows you to play with augmented reality without third party applications. The manufacturer promises that, on average, the Z3 will live for two full days on one charge - about Z2 they talked about 1.4 days, and the Z2 “lived” almost one and a half times longer than iPhone 5S.

HTC One M8

The One M8 screen can be called small: some 5 inches (the resolution is the same as a 5.5-inch Afion). The main advantage of HTC's flagship is very, very subjective: design. Cheaper options

Above, we looked at smartphones whose price was equal to the average salary of a Belarusian (speculators will value the first “gray” copies of the iPhone 6 at the average salary of an IT specialist). But you can also find cheaper, albeit not as flagship or famous options.

OnePlus One will soon arrive in Belarus - the debut smartphone from the Chinese OPPO on the well-known Android firmware CyanogenMod. The price will most likely be below $400, while the characteristics are comparable to the LG G3 with the exception of screen resolution (FullHD, like the iPhone 6), and foreign experts have no doubt about the quality of the work of the guys from OPPO, who are not particularly well-known in Belarus.

For the same price you can buy the joint brainchild of LG and Google - Nexus 5, the “reference” 5-inch smartphone of 2013. Despite its age, the hardware still copes with all tasks, and OS updates will continue to come for another year or two. The downsides are the not so powerful (but not weak) battery and the lack of a memory card slot (like all iPhones). In addition, “craftsmen” most often make alternative firmware specifically for the Nexus line - perhaps in a year they will port Windows XP to it.

Price: $386 at time of publication.

“Your Nexus” is also offered by Huawei for a little over 400 – the Ascend P7 has a 5-inch FullHD screen, a decent 13MP camera, and a metal body even thinner than the iPhone. True, its own 8-core Huawei processor not happy yet beautiful numbers in performance tests - perhaps its optimization is a matter of time. And don't forget: if you just need a stylish, thin and light metal smartphone, then the P7 is suitable, but if you are a designer or an actor, then without an apple on back cover- nekomilfo.

Meizu MX4 is priced at $300 in China. The 5.36-inch FullHD screen promises to be incredibly bright and contrasty, the new eight-core Mediatek processor– especially energy efficient, 20.7 megapixel camera from Sony – no worse than that of the Xperia Z3. One problem is that the MX4 itself is unlikely to come to Belarus, except for a couple of speculators.

The fact that the iPhone 6 was released did not make its predecessor, the iPhone 5S, any worse.
