Creating a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 10. Creating installation media from a USB flash drive

Good day!

For Windows installations Many users are increasingly resorting to flash drives. This is understandable, because installing an OS using a flash drive has a number of advantages:

  • Files are copied from it faster, which means the installation will be completed in less time;
  • You can put the flash drive in any of your pockets and always have it at hand;
  • it can be connected to a laptop, PC, netbook - to any device with a USB port (and on many modern laptops There is no CD/DVD drive at all...).

In this article I will look at several current ways to create a bootable one (it is also sometimes called installation) flash drives with Windows 10.

Advice!

Method 1: Through a tool from Microsoft

Pros: suitable even for those who do not have an ISO image with Windows (we will officially download it); normal Windows without “built-in” problems; you can simply update your old OS (without a classic reinstallation); official method from Microsoft.

Disadvantage: you need a fast and good Internet channel to Microsoft servers.

We are talking, of course, about the instrument - . To download this utility, you need to go to the official website of the program.

Microsoft Media Creation Tool

Short description: special Microsoft utility that allows you to download ISO image from official company server and use it to create bootable media (flash drives, external drives etc.). The tool is intended for Windows 10 OS only.

After downloading and launching the program, you will first be asked to accept license agreement(I won’t cite it here). If you accept, then you need to do the following:

Basically, there is nothing more to comment here: now you either have an ISO image with Windows 10 - and you can burn it to a DVD (or on a flash drive, I’ll talk about this later in the article), or you already have a bootable USB flash drive (it all depends on what you chose in step 3, see description above).

In general, in my opinion, this tool from Microsoft is very convenient and effective for preparing installation media (what was missing for so long before...).

To help!

You might find this article useful on how to burn an ISO image to a USB flash drive. - (there are a couple more ways listed there).

Method 2: Using Rufus utility (BIOS, UEFI)

To run the program, you need an ISO image (for example, the one we created in the previous step).

Utility for work - Rufus

One of best utilities for recording bootable USB flash drives. Despite his small size, the utility is very multifunctional. The most important thing: it allows you to burn flash drives both for classic installation (from BIOS) and on new PCs with UEFI support. For “contrast”, I will consider both options.

How to create a bootable USB flash drive in Rufus (Important! All data on the flash drive will be deleted when performing this task) :

  1. insert the flash drive into the USB port and run the program as administrator (just click right click by the utility icon and select it in context menu) ;
  2. Device: Specify a USB storage device ( Special attention- if you have several flash drives/disks connected to your PC);
  3. Partition scheme and type system interface : MBR for computers with BIOS or UEFI-CSM; (if for UEFI - indicate GPT for UEFI computers);
  4. File system: NTFS (for UEFI - FAT 32);
  5. Cluster size: 4096/8192 bytes (default);
  6. New volume label: custom field;
  7. Quick formatting – Yes;
    Create an extended label and device icon – Yes;
  8. Create boot disk– ISO image. Click the button and specify the path to the Windows 10 image(for UEFI, specify Windows image 10 64-bit). Check the option Standard installation Windows;
  9. The last step is pressing the button "Start", the program will ask you again about formatting the media. We just agree and wait for the operation to complete (all setup steps are shown in the screenshots below).

Method 3: Using UltraISO

Ultra ISO

One of best programs for working with ISO images: allows you to create them, burn them to flash drives and CDs/ DVD disc and, edit them, change them, extract files from them, etc. Generally, indispensable tool, if you are involved in working with ISO images...

For creating installation flash drive in UltraISO, you need to do the following (we'll look at it step by step).

1) First you need to download and install UltraISO (this is standard, I don’t consider it), and run the program as administrator (to do this, right-click on the program icon and select this option in the context menu)!

2) Then you need to open the ISO image - click File/open, or you can press a combination of buttons Ctrl+O .

Opening an ISO image // UltraISO

2) If the image opened and there are no errors, then click menu (see screenshot below).

Burn UltraISO hard drive image

3) In the next step you need to set the basic recording settings:

  • disk drive - specify the letter of the flash drive (Attention! If you have 2-3 flash drives connected to your PC, you can easily make a mistake. All information from the flash drive will be deleted during the recording process!);
  • recording method: USB-HDD+ (if the flash drive won’t boot into anything, try specifying the option USB-HDD no pros/cons);
  • then click the button "Record" .

Recording Settings // Ultra ISO

4) Actually, all you have to do is wait until the information is written to the flash drive. The recording time depends on the speed of your USB port, the ISO image (the number and size of files on it), and the PC load.

The recording is completed successfully - the installation flash drive is ready!

Method 4: Direct recording to a flash drive

Important! Such a flash drive will only work on modern computers/laptops with UEFI support (if you created a flash drive using this material, but the computer does not see it, most likely you do not have UEFI, but BIOS. Just rewrite it using the first three programs/methods: Microsoft Media Creation Tool, UltraISO, Rufus).

Great free archiver, which supports dozens of formats: 7z, rar, zip, etc. It can extract files from an ISO image (which is what is needed for this task).

Probably the most famous archivist in Russia. In general, it is in no way inferior to the first, and also allows you to extract files from ISO.

1) First you need to format the USB flash drive. To do this, go to "This computer", right-click on the flash drive and select "Format" (as in the screenshot below).

2) File system specify FAT 32! It is also recommended to do quick formatting(clearing table of contents).

Important! All data from the flash drive will be deleted when formatted.

Note: to do this, simply right-click on the ISO image and select 7-Zip/open from the context menu (as in the screenshot below).

4) Then simply extract all the files from the image to your flash drive. For this purpose in 7-Zip click the button "Extract", and then select your drive. In general, everything is quite simple. Similar actions will be carried out in WinRar.

After all the files have been extracted to the flash drive, you can proceed.

3) Create bootable media with a Windows 10 image using official images from the Microsoft website.

Note: Before performing these operations on your device, you should contact technical support its manufacturer. Perhaps he is using special images for your device, and you will not be able to install the system correctly using "clean" images from Microsoft. Please clarify the possibility and legality of using this instruction.

Note 2: Enterprise/Education editions are not mentioned in this article, however, most of the steps for installing Windows 10 of these types are the same as described in this article.

Details

What is needed to perform these actions.

  • Internet connection (you will need to download from 4 to 7 GB of data).
  • Disk space on your computer/tablet to store downloaded files.
  • A flash drive or disk with a capacity of 8 GB (in some cases, 4 GB will be enough). You can also use SD cards (for example, this will be much more convenient for a tablet).

  • operating room Windows system 7 or later (Windows 10 recommended).

Make sure you have all of this.

Create bootable media with a Windows 10 image using the Media Creation Tool.

This method is the simplest and is suitable for most Windows users.

1) Download the Media Creation Tool program and run it.

You can download the program from the official Microsoft website by clicking on the button Download the tool now on this page . You can also use the direct link.

Run the downloaded file. The following window will open:

2) Read and accept the license agreement.

Review the license agreement. If you agree with it, which is necessary for further operation of the program, click Accept.

3) Select "Create bootable media for another PC."

After some time (usually up to 1 minute), the program window will update and look like this:

Click on the button Create bootable media for another PC. Then click Further.

4) Select the desired options for the Windows 10 you are going to install.

After the previous operations, a window will open where you will be asked to select the parameters of the Windows you are installing. Initially, as you can see in the next screenshot, they are inactive.

In order to select the necessary parameters manually, uncheck the box circled in the screenshot. It will be signed as Use recommended settings for this computer.

Select the options you need. In the first drop-down list, select Windows language. In the second - the editorial staff. In the third - bit depth, 32-bit or 64-bit.

Learn more about languages.

The language you select will be the default Windows language. The selected language also determines the region and format of time, currency, etc. in Windows, as well as the available editions of Windows 10. In the standard editions of Windows 10 - Home or Professional (Pro) - you can change the language. However, I recommend initially choosing the one you need.

More about the editions.

The editions available depend on the language you select. There are 4 of them in total. If you are going to reinstall Windows on your current computer/tablet, you can leave this parameter no changes - the program automatically selects what you need. Otherwise, you need to select exactly the edition for which you purchased the license.

1) Windows 10. This edition is available for all languages. It includes Windows 10 Home and Professional. When installing Windows from such an image, you will be asked to select desired type OS.

2) Windows 10 Home for one language (Home Single Language). This edition is also available for all languages.

3) Windows 10 N. This edition is available for limited quantity languages. There is no Russian or Ukrainian among them. It has a different set of built-in programs.

4) Windows 10 KN. This edition is only available for the Korean language.

Read more about bit depth.

The system capacity directly depends on the processor architecture. It comes in two types - 32-bit and 64-bit. Moreover, a 32-bit system can be installed on 64-bit processors, but a 64-bit system cannot be installed on 32-bit processors.

If you are going to reinstall Windows on your current computer/tablet, I recommend leaving this setting unchanged. Otherwise, make sure that the processor of the device you need supports one or another bit depth. In addition, the manufacturer of this PC must provide drivers for this bitness.

Moreover, keep in mind that a 32-bit system will only work with 4 GB or less of RAM, even if you have 6 GB or more installed, and a 64-bit system is only worth installing if you have more than 4 GB of RAM.

You can also select the "Both" option. In this case, when installing the OS, you can select the bit depth you need.

After selecting the required options, click Further:

If you have changed any settings, you will receive a warning that Windows activation which you will install using this image, you may need a different license.

Click OK.

5) Select to create bootable media based on a flash drive.

A window will open asking you where to save the system image. The program can simply download and save the ISO file on your computer for its further use, or can immediately write the system image to a flash drive. If you need to use a disk, I recommend using the instructions from Part 2 of this article (creating bootable media using official images from the Microsoft website). In this part of the article we will choose a flash drive.

Depending on the parameters you selected earlier, flash drives of different sizes will be needed. The required volume is displayed directly under the first item - “USB flash memory devices”.

Select 1st item - USB flash memory device and press Further.

6) Insert the flash drive and select it in the program.

A window will open in front of you with a list of all flash drives connected to your computer/tablet. If you connect a new flash drive, you will need to press a button Refresh disk list so that the program can detect it.

Insert the flash drive to which you will burn the image, refresh the list of drives and select the appropriate device. Please note that this flash drive will be formatted. After that click Further.

7) Wait for the image to download.

After selecting the flash drive, the program will begin downloading the image. During this time, you can freely use the computer.

8) After downloading, the image verification process will begin.

9) After this, the program will begin writing the image to the flash drive.

10) The bootable flash drive is ready!

You can close the program.

Creating a download private media with a Windows 10 image using official images from the Microsoft website.

Let's assume:

  • Media Creation Tool is not working correctly for you;
  • You wanted to download the OS image yourself;
  • You wanted to burn the image to disk;
  • You want to burn an image of one of the Windows Insider Program builds to a disk or flash drive.

Then it will help you this instruction.

After a few seconds, the following drop-down list will appear. It asks you to select a Windows language. Scroll through the list and select Russian, if you need Russian, Ukrainian, if you need Ukrainian or any other language. After this, press the button again Confirm.

After this, two buttons will appear in front of you that contain download links. The first button is a link to download a 32-bit image, the second is a link to download a 64-bit image. Read more about bit depth in paragraph 4 of part 1 of this article.

1.2) You need an image of one of the preliminary OS builds.

Go to the following site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewadvanced

If it says you're not an Insider even though you are, try changing your Microsoft account name to something in Latin rather than Cyrillic.

The process of setting parameters and obtaining the corresponding link is similar to the process described in paragraph 1.1 of this part of this article. True, the Insider Program website is in English, but you can use a translator.

The only thing that will change is the available editions of Windows 10. Different builds, corporate editions, etc. will be available. However, for most it will be necessary Windows edition 10 Insider Preview, which contains Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview and Windows 10 Home Insider Preview. These editions are activated by licenses from Windows 10 Professional and Windows 10 Home, respectively.

Also, not all languages available for stable may be available. Windows versions 10!

Now the program is installed, its shortcut is on the desktop. It can also be found in the Start menu.

ATTENTION! During installation, the program may require you to install a system component - . NET Framework 2.0. The installation will most likely happen automatically; you will just need to confirm the download and installation of this component.

4) Launch the program and select the ISO file you downloaded earlier.

In the window that opens, click gray button Browse(1). Explorer will open. Find and open the ISO file you downloaded earlier there. Let it appear in line (2). After that, press the green button Next (3).

5) Select the media on which you will burn the image.

Press blue button USB device(1), if you write the image to a flash drive, use the blue button DVD(2) if you burn the image to disk or gray button Start Over(3) if you selected the wrong image in the previous step and want to return to the beginning of the recording process.

6) Insert the desired flash drive/disk to which you want to burn the image.

Select required device in the drop-down list (1). If you have just inserted a disk/flash drive, press the blue button (2) to refresh the list of available devices. After that, press the green button Begin copying(“Start Recording”, 3). If you messed something up in the previous steps, the gray button Start Over(4) to return to the beginning of the process at your service.

7) Agree to format the flash drive if you are writing the image to it.

The flash drive must be formatted before the recording process. If it contains information that is important to you, copy it to a computer or other flash drive before burning the image.

To format, click the button Erase USB Device . After that, another window will pop up, “Are you sure you want to do this?” Click Yes("Yes").

At one time, when I was just starting to get acquainted with personal computer— the question of finding a bootable distribution was very pressing, and there weren’t many tools for creating one at that time. However, if you found the utility you needed, most likely it was difficult to learn and required certain knowledge, which ordinary users Well, it didn’t fit at all. Nobody even thought about recording images in a couple of clicks on a flash drive, but times change and the fairy tale becomes reality.

Bootable USB flash drive Windows 10 - offer from Microsoft

I think everyone will agree that it would be fair to start the review with official way, which Microsoft offers us. Of course, it’s not always convenient, but for beginners, as we like to say, it’s just what the doctor ordered.

First of all we need to download official utility Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website and first stock up on a flash drive of at least 8 gigabytes in size (not all flash drives with a smaller capacity will fit), well, a couple of minutes of free time and very preferably high-speed and unlimited Internet. This is where the first drawback of this method emerges - you will not be able to write down finished image, which they could have leaked from a neighbor and recorded separately on their computer. This utility downloads the latest current distribution and writes it to the installation media.

A few words about the bit depth of this useful utility. You must download the utility of the same bitness as your system - this does not depend on the bitness of the distribution you are creating, which you want to burn to a USB drive for installation from it operating system further

So, Media Creation Tools is not only a way to create installation media, it is a real assistant in the transition to Windows 10. But there is no point in considering this functionality of the utility in the context of our tasks, and clean install from scratch - the key to good impressions from the new Microsoft operating system without glitches and brakes.

That's it, enough of the introduction - let's move on to the most important thing. We launch the “Windows 10 Setup Program” and they ask us, “What do we want to do?” Should we update our computer or create installation media for another computer?... we are of course interested in the second option, select it and click the “Next” button

The next step is to select the language and system architecture (this is what I wrote about at the very beginning - here we select the bit depth of the installation kit). If you are not sure what exactly is right for you, you can rely on the utility and check the “Use recommended settings for this computer” checkbox. Usually optimal settings are displayed relatively correctly.

The last step in preparing the installation flash drive is to choose what we want to do with the distribution? - just save to your computer (marked in the picture below), or write to a flash drive. Personally, I don’t quite understand why we need to save an ISO image to a computer if we can’t prepare installation package having already downloaded the distribution kit (by the way, which was created by the same MediaCreationTool)

All that remains is to wait for Windows 10 to download and burn to the USB flash drive. It all depends on the speed of your Internet connection and the performance of the flash drive that you wanted to make bootable with Windows 10. (If you select good storage with USB 3 and connect to the corresponding ports on the computer, then this process will be significantly reduced and recording will take just a few minutes)

Rufus is the best third-party solution for bootable media

It's time for my favorite way to create bootable flash drive to install Windows 10. This software is capable of more, but now we are considering it in the context of creating a “tens” installation kit.

If the previous method did not suit you or you have your own ready-made ISO image with the distribution kit of the operating system you need, then there is nothing easier than writing it to a flash drive.

In the “Device” item, select your flash drive, at the very bottom of the program window we find “Create a boot disk” and, by clicking on the image of the CD, select the location of our ISO image with Windows 10.

Click “Start” and wait until the image is written to the flash drive.

Pay attention to the item “Partition scheme and system interface type” - by default, Rufus selects best option. If you do not understand these symbols, then if the system installation is unsuccessful, just try another option - it should help.

Creating a bootable Windows 10 USB flash drive without programs

The the method will work only for relatively new computers and laptops, motherboard which are equipped with UEFI software (and this is usually a computer no older than 3-4 years) and they support this very hated EFI boot.

This can be said to be an option for the “lazy”; we only need two ingredients - a flash drive of suitable size formatted in FAT32 (it is very important) and the image itself with Windows 10. We just need to transfer all the image files to the root of the flash drive and that’s it. The image can be mounted using Daemon Tools or using standard methods (Windwos 10 can work with ISO images right out of the box)

That's all, now you can install Windows 10 from the newly created flash drive (provided that you have the mode active UEFI boot). It is logical that we need to select boot from USB media in the Boot Menu of the motherboard.

Ultra ISO - a proven way to create a bootable USB flash drive

Creating a bootable USB flash drive with using UltraISO- this method can be classified as “old-fashioned”; I don’t even remember when I started using this program to “cut” an image into USB drive, but over time more convenient and more functional utilities appeared. But don't forget that this program has a wider application than the banal recording of an image on a flash drive.

The process itself can be broken down into a couple of steps:

  1. Open the Windows 10 ISO image in the program (I spent a long time trying to figure out where to select it when writing to a flash drive, it turned out to be so simple)
  2. Select “Burn” from the “Bootboot” menu. image of Hard disk...", then select the media and press start; in most cases, you don’t need to configure anything.

WinSetupFromUSB is one of the best in the business

Let's move on to another program, the purpose of which is only to slicing system images (not only Windows 10) to USB drives, the utility is called WinSetupFromUSB

A bootable Windows 10 flash drive is created very simply here - we select the media on which we want to burn the ISO image and check the box that we want to put on it. Click on the button with “three dots” next to the marked item and select our distribution - click the GO button and go drink tea, nothing more is required from you.

Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

Another simple method from Microsoft for burning Window 7 to a USB flash drive, but these instructions are also perfect for Windows 10 - everything works great. I don’t see much sense in this method - there are other most simple ways that do not require installation additional programs, but this method has the right to life. Unfortunately, the utility is only in English, but this does not cause any difficulties in communicating with the interface.

Step 1. Select an ISO image with your Windows distribution 10 (If this is some kind of assembly, then be prepared for the fact that this utility will not be able to create a bootable installation kit for you)

Step 2. It is determined where we want to burn our image - to a DVD disc or to USB device, we have not been interested in disks for a long time, and the topic of the article is a bootable flash drive, not disks...

Step 3 and 4. We insert our USB drive, select it in the list and click green button"Begin copying". We are patient and wait until the files are written to the drive.

With this, we have smoothly completed the last, sixth method of creating a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 on board. In the following notes I will try to explain in detail how to use such a tool in practice, as always in pictures and in as much detail as possible.

P.S. Well, friends, I hope you have decided for yourself which option for recording a distribution on a flash drive is best for you. I'm sure that for isolated case like “Downloaded for yourself, installed and forgot” - this is an option with the Media Creation Tool. For everything else there is Rufus, which does not require installation. But this is just my, subjective opinion. All the best!
