Create a subdomain on your domain. What is a subdomain and why is it needed? Own control panel

It will be extremely useful for novice webmasters to know what a subdomain is. In this article we will look in detail at what they are needed for, how to create them and whether they are worth using.

1. What is a site subdomain

Subdomain(English "subdomain") is a site with a domain of the third or higher level (the level of a domain is determined by the number of dots in its name)

For example, a site with the address poddomen.site.ru is a completely independent site, although it is a subdomain of the main “site.ru”. However, in the eyes of search engines, it is a completely different site.

Most often, subdomains are used to create a forum and blog on your website. For example:

forum.sape.ru forum.alpari.ru blog.sape.ru

Please note that both the forum and the blog could easily be placed in a separate directory on the site, but webmasters move it to a higher domain level. Also, the use of subdomains is often justified for large websites of companies that make websites on different languages. It turns out something like:

ru.namecomp.com ua.namecomp.com

What is the reason for this trend? Generally speaking, the use of subdomains is very justified from many points of view. At a minimum, we separate the main site from its "subsite" in terms of Maintenance and SEO. This is also convenient for experienced Internet users, because... clearly understand where you are.

2. Benefits of using subdomains

2.1. From an SEO optimization point of view:

To promote a website, a subdomain helps to divide the website into thematic sections, and also is a certain security for the main project.

For example, let's take the same forum. It could be placed in a category directly on the website - site.ru/forum. In this case, our site will lose its strict theme. If our site is about cars, then the presence of a forum will be a separate area (it has its own engine, its own design). Plus, we risk that copy-paste, links to “bad” resources, low-quality content, and spam will appear on the forum. As a result, the entire site may fall under the filter just because of the forum. And if the forum is located on a subdomain, nothing threatens the main site - it is a separate site.

2.2. From a technical point of view:

And here are some advantages. The subdomain can be placed on another hosting account altogether, thereby reducing the load on the main site. For large portals, where constant problems with loads this is a real salvation.

Plus primary domain security. When there are several sites on a site (after all, a forum is considered a separate engine, a separate design, etc.), then the chances of being hacked by hackers increase. And if the forum is hacked, then the main site is not in danger and it continues to work.

Therefore, for large portals, a subdomain is a very important component.

In addition, a subdomain is often used when testing new versions of a website. When changes are made to the engine, functionality, etc. Often a subdomain like new.site.ru is created and testing is carried out on it. They give a link to some users so that they try out the new site.

3. How to create a subdomain

You can create a subdomain on the hosting where the site is located. Since the creation procedure is different on each hosting, I can only briefly say approximately what and how to click. Look for a tab with approximately the following names: “manage subdomains”, or “add a site”, or in the settings of the domain itself, look for everything that contains the words subdomain.

As a last resort, the easiest way is to contact the service technical support hosting.

4. Features and nuances of subdomains

4.1. Maximum subdomain nesting

In addition to the usual subdomains poddomen.site.ru, you can also create higher levels of sites. For example, forum.poddomen.site.ru. The maximum possible nesting level of a subdomain is 127. The maximum possible length of the name of each subdomain is 63 characters. At the same time, we must not forget maximum limit generic domain name of 255 characters. There are a lot of possibilities.

4.2. TCI and PageRank of the subdomain

The site's TCI and PR indicators for a subdomain are calculated separately and are in no way related to the main site. Also, the site’s trust is not transferred to its subdomains in any way.

Update (from 2018): TCI and PageRank are no longer calculated. The new Yandex ICS indicator is calculated for the main domain; all subdomains duplicate its value.

4.3. Is it always possible to create a subdomain?

A subdomain can only be created if the second-level domain belongs to you. If the site is hosted on a third-party hosting and has a third-level domain (for example, site.ucoz.com), then there is a very small chance that you will be allowed to create a subdomain. This is due to the fact that the main domain is not yours, the engine is not yours.

4.4. Is there a dependency between the main site and the subdomain?

There may be a dependence, but at least no one has ever stated this. If a subdomain falls under the search engine filter, then the main site should not suffer from this. The only thing that will be bad for the main site is that links leading to a subdomain will most likely be considered not very good in this case. After all, the site links to a filtered site. But there are no exact studies and statements on this matter.

4.5. Is it difficult to promote a subdomain?

As practice shows, subdomains are more difficult to promote than main domains. But on the other hand, this is basically normal. Still, the main domain has a great influence. Because of this, subdomains are not usually relied upon to rank first in search engines.

However, there is a small nuance. After all, a subdomain also has a home page. And as everyone knows, the home page has more weight than any other page. As a result, we can say that we have a fairly powerful main page for the subdomain, which we can really promote and be the first. This is especially true for thematic forums created on the site.

4.6. The theme of the subdomain should be different

Don't create a site on a subdomain with the same theme in hopes of attracting more traffic. Search engines have an affiliate filter. And in in this case It is obvious that the owner of the site is one person. So don't be angry search engines and try to swim against the current.

Igor. Update: April 15, 2014.

Hello, dear readers of the blog site! Quite a lot of time on the pages of the web resource has already been devoted to such aspects of website building as the domain (here everything is about the levels of domain names, DNS servers, their connections with IP addresses of sites) and hosting (about what hosting is and how to choose a provider). We also discussed in great detail how to buy a domain (checking the DI for occupancy and checking it, information about registrars and resellers).

This is no coincidence, since these concepts are fundamental for any webmaster. The time has come to dwell on another important component and answer the question, what is a subdomain (or subdomain), why are site subdomains needed, is their number limited, and how to create subdomains in the hosting control panel (using the example Sprinthost).

Website subdomains - what are they for?

In general, a site subdomain is nothing more than a part of a larger domain high level. You can read more about CI levels in the material, a link to which is given at the very beginning of this publication. A third-level domain is an SD of a second-level domain, a fourth-level domain is a subdomain of a third-level domain, etc. Maximum amount There are 127 levels of subdomains in the Domain Names System (DNS), but in practice this theoretical possibility is not realized.

The most common of the subdomains, if we mean ordinary information resources, is the 3rd level domain. The most striking example of SD can be the various Yandex services that are located on them:

Webmaster.yandex.ru maps.yandex.ru

1. If you want to create, for example, a forum without interrupting the topic of the main project. For example, for my blog, the subdomain in this case will look like this:

Forum.site

2. Typically, large multilingual portals have a separate subdomain for each language:

Ru.wordpress.org

3. Information space The website can be distributed on the board by region or area of activity. Moreover, this is more typical for large commercial projects, including those for which a web resource on the network is simply additional means brand promotion. An example is one of the subsidiaries of the Lukoil corporation:

Trans.lukoil.ru

4. A separate subdomain can be allocated to help clients of a commercial website (for example, an online store) or visitors information resource, then it will look something like this:

Support.site

5. You can create a subdomain for testing within your hosting account, which will serve as a kind of testing ground for experiments (for example, with WordPress themes or plugins):

Test.site

On such a subdomain you can easily use any other CMS and it will work correctly, just like on the main domain. At least for Sprinthost this statement is absolutely true. I have listed only the most popular cases when the creation of subdomains is completely justified; in practice, there are many more of them. But for starters, the above is enough.

How to create a subdomain in the hoster’s admin panel, features of subdomains

First, let's find out the practical side of the issue, that is, creating a subdomain within (I remind you once again that I will analyze all such operations using the example of Sprinthost). This will help us understand the essence a little when further considering the main features of diabetes regarding the determination of their status.

So, to create a subdomain in the administrative panel, start from the “Sites and Domains” section on home page hosting account, click the “Site Management” link, where we click on the name of the desired resource. We find ourselves on a page where you can perform a wide variety of actions with the selected project. By the way, you can get here by simply clicking on the name of the desired website in the column on the right of the PU interface:

On this page you can, for example, for this website. It goes without saying that there is also the opportunity to create a subdomain. To this end, click on the “Site Subdomains” link and go to the web page where you create a subdomain by simply inserting its name into the line and clicking the “Add” button:

In just a few minutes, the subdomain will be created. If you return to the same page after a while, you will immediately see a link to a freshly created subdomain in the list:

Thus, it is possible to create as many subdomains for a specific website, even in the most junior conditions tariff plan(however, I note that this statement applies in this case to hosting on Sprinthost; other hosters may have restrictions in this regard).

Naturally, since SD is a third-level domain name, there are no additional actions, including registration, does not need to be done with it, since it will be linked to the main website. Below we will look at the form in which this connection exists. If you now click on the link with the name of the newly created subdomain, you will be taken to a web page with a stub like this:

This inscription says that this place is intended for SD test.site. That is, this subdomain can be filled with content by first installing some CMS on it, for example, WordPress. The installation procedure for WordPress is no different from a similar operation performed for the main domain.

Now let's see what a subdomain is in relation to the structure of the main website. If we look at the root directory of the parent website, we will see that the folder for the created subdomain is located here:

Now this is the point I would like to dwell on. If after creating a subdomain in address bar browser enter two different URLs:

The web page of this subdomain will open. That is, on the one hand, a subdomain is part of the main website, and on the other, an independent project. Therefore, there are a lot of nuances when promoting such a web project. And a dilemma inevitably arises - to use a subdomain as an independent project, but closely related to the main site, or a subdirectory as one of the sections.

It all depends on the nature of the materials you want to post. Unfortunately, within the framework of this article there is no opportunity to develop this topic, however, experienced webmasters who have eaten dog promotion for web projects located on SD may well leave comments on this matter. I think this information will be useful to everyone.

In my opinion, there is a very obvious way to indicate to search engines that the created subdomain should be considered just that, and not a section of the main website. This is an opportunity to register a redirect (redirection) to this SD. This action can be carried out automatically in the same admin panel of your hosting account. To do this, again in the website management section of the “Server Settings” subsection, select the “Redirects” option and get here:

In the line “Local URL path” we write the name of the subdirectory of the main site in which the subdomain is located (for this example- test), and in the line “Destination URL” - the address of the created subdomain (http://test.site) and click the “Save” button, after a few seconds we get this redirect in the list:

Now, even if you enter “/test” into the browser line, you will be redirected to “http://test.sitet”. I'll try to confirm my words on specific example, using a super authoritative source in the form of the almighty Yandex. Try entering the following address into your browser:

A redirect will immediately occur to:

I think that says a lot. It is precisely about the fact that we, ordinary webmasters, can perform similar actions. For a more in-depth study of this issue, I suggest you additionally watch a video on the topic:

Everything would be fine, but if the server control panel is different, for example cPanel, everything will be a little different :)

  2. Igor

Unfortunately it is so. But the algorithm of actions is still similar. But I’m not ready to describe all the panel options yet. Although, later, perhaps, I’ll take the time and write a review post.

  3. Denis

It would be great, especially since there are only three main panels, as far as I know.

  4. Sergey

Just today the thought flashed through my head that I need to find out information about subdomains. You are on time, Igor. Thank you. I think that the process is the same for all hostings, but when creating a subdomain I have to choose from two options - Create a new site and point the subdomain to it
    or
Direct the subdomain to an existing directory (my site.ru/public_html)
Probably we should choose the latter. Yes?

  5. Igor

Yes, Sergey, if you want a subdomain for an already existing site, then, of course, the latter. Although I don’t understand why people should be so confused? A separate option is to create a website, and a separate option is to create a subdomain for an existing website.

  6. Sergey

If you create a subdomain for a site, then the load on it increases.

  7. Igor

Sergey, if the load is created, it is on the hosting where your projects are located. That is, if you create a second site within your tariff plan, then the total load on the server will be the same regardless of whether you add a subdomain to this site or to another.

Now, if the second web project exists independently of the first, it means that you have a separate account for another site, then this makes sense. But in this case you will have to pay according to a different tariff plan.

  8. Peter

Thank you for the article. For me, a beginner, the picture is now clearer.

  9. Igor Gornov

Peter, I am very glad about this circumstance. 🙂

  10. Anton

Unclear! Where to create a subdomain? Hosted? Or at the registrar?
I think I registered a domain with namecheap. There, when you create a subdomain, they ask you to indicate the IP address next to it. Is this the IP address I should provide? And next to it is the rocord type, what needs to be specified there?
    Thank you.

  11. Igor Gornov

Anton, you don’t even need to read the content of the article, but the title. There is already information WHERE the subdomain is created. It's on the hosting. You can find out the IP address of your resource in your hosting account or from the hoster by writing to the support service. But record type means the type of resource record, that is, the NS server, which must be specified when creating a domain. Read more in a series of articles on the topic of hosting and DNS on my blog, I assure you, you will understand a lot.

  12. Anton

    Thank you.
The problem is that I can create a subdomain at my registrar, although my hosting is not with them, but in another place, so I did not understand where it is better to create a subdomain (at the registrar or hosting). Why then do I even need the ability to create a subdomain at the registrar if I don’t host there?
It turns out that it is more correct to create a subdomain at the hoster, and not in the registrar panel?
    Thank you.

  13. Igor Gornov

Anton, you are absolutely correct in raising this topic, since many people actually create subdomains at the registrar, since they are inextricably linked with the main domain. Technically correct, both ways. It’s simply more convenient to create subdomains on your own hosting, since all the information about the projects will be at your fingertips.

  14. Dmitriy

Hello, I have a rather heavy component on my website, the menu with it takes quite a long time to load. If this menu is created on a subdomain with a separate DB, will it load faster? and the load on the main domain will ease? or is there no point in this?

  15. Igor Gornov

Dmitry, in such cases, “heavy” content is loaded from a separate server. Logically speaking, a subdomain is part of the site, occupying part of this space. Therefore, unfortunately, I think that this method will not bring the expected effect.

  16. Irina

Hello, we have a website that is more informational. But I really want to create an “online store” button somewhere in the menu. Tell me, do I need to create a subdomain for this? So that, for example, a person clicks there and ends up on a full-fledged online store website. Tell

  17. Igor Gornov

Irina, in order to have a full-fledged website, you need to use a second-level domain, this will be more profitable for its promotion. And by creating a subdomain, you get Domain name third level.

  18. Sergey

I agree, when I looked at the article, I decided to check how my hoster Handyhost was doing with subdomains, it turns out they are free there, which was a complete surprise to me)

  19. Lera

Okay, but how can I make sure that the site is indexed evenly like the main one, only on English language, and the ranking power is equal to other sites in your language? What is the best way to resolve this issue? I think the plugins do not provide such a solution, but simply translate everything using a translator and the user can select the language using buttons. And here it is necessary for the site to be indexed on English language more. I'm thinking of transferring everything manually and adding it manually.

  20. Igor Gornov

Yes, this is the right decision. Human manual labor coupled with intellectual labor is always better than an automatic machine and gives much better results.

Although humans are social creatures, sometimes the closeness of individuals can be stressful. This refers to the restless neighbors that surround each of us. It’s good that at least we can “house” neighbors we like in the subdomains of our resource:

Site subdomains

Let's start with an analogy. For example, you have a large one-room apartment. The area of her room is enough to divide it into several more rooms. But to do this, you need to obtain permission from the relevant authorities and install dividing partitions between the rooms.

Almost the same thing needs to be done to divide your site into smaller subdomains.

  • Notify your domain name registrar about the division of the main domain into smaller ones;
  • Change file structure your domain (" erect partitions") – create on a rented hoster virtual space new directories for placing child elements:

But before we get into the practical part, let’s deal with theoretical basis. Let's find out what site subdomains are and what they are used for.

What is a subdomain

The Domain Name System (DNS) has a tree structure. That is, one element can be nested within another. Therefore, any domain other than the root (first level) is a subdomain.

Most often, a subdomain is a regular third-level domain. Its name consists of the name of the main resource and its own.

For example, there is a main resource base.ru. Then the name of its subdomain will look like this: subdomain.base.ru. Although base.ru itself is a subdomain of the root domain ru.

The DNS system supports the creation of 127 nesting levels. Wherein maximum length Each name cannot exceed 63 characters, and the common domain name cannot exceed 255.

Before creating a subdomain, you need to understand when the use of such a resource structure is justified.

Using a site subdomain

Most often, branching the main domain name with the help of subdomains is used on large-scale portals. As a rule, such resources consist of large sections, which over time, for ease of access for visitors, need to be separated into separate sites.

An example of such a division is a large online electronics store. It is logical to consider each of its sections as an independent resource. And so that the buyer can immediately go to the product category he needs, it is better to separate all sections into separate subdomains.

The following screenshot shows that in the search results, each section of a large commercial portal is located on a separate subdomain:

If you follow one of the links, you will find yourself in the corresponding product section. And its address is a fourth-level domain name:

This division of the main resource has several more positive aspects:

  • The administration of a large portal is simplified - a similar effect is achieved by dividing areas of responsibility among management and personnel. Each team is responsible for its own product section;
  • A free platform for testing new software and engines - before creating a subdomain of the main section, its space can be used to test a new CMS. Deployed on a subdomain new engine, you can quickly discover all its positive and negative sides. And also to implement as much as possible fine tuning engine for the specifics of your hosting. And only after that transfer the entire resource to its base. Moreover, during the testing period, the site works without problems on the old platform and generates profit.

Testing a new engine on a subdomain does not in any way affect the functioning of the main domain.

  • Separating a forum or support service from the main resource - this approach is used on thematic sites. Or commercial portals focused on information support for a specific product or service (hosting, software etc. and so on.):

Subdomain and SEO

Despite all the data provided above on the use of subdomains, many questions still remain. And before creating subdomains, they are worth considering.

The main " stumbling block"When using subdomains, their influence on the indexing performance of the main resource remains.

Moreover, no one will give you clear answers on this aspect. Therefore, we will try to highlight more or less established truths:

  • A subdomain provides more advantages for regional promotion of a service or product - the subdomain structure of the site can be organized in such a way that each region will have its own resource;

A regional subdomain of the main site, with its narrowly targeted content, can more accurately reflect the specifics of the region or area for which it is designed:

Ideally, these are several subdomains, the content of which is written in different languages:

  • A subdomain is a separate resource, but at the same time does not inherit the popularity indicators of the parent site. At the same time, it completely takes over the effect of all penalties from search engines. This needs to be taken into account before making a subdomain.
  • All search engines treat subdomains differently. For example, Google does not see them at all and displays them in search results as a section of the main site. And Yandex distinguishes them only if they are registered in its . At the same time, Google will not display the main resource and its subdomain in search results for the same query.

In fact, it is very difficult to predict the behavior of search engines in relation to subdomains. Therefore, when carrying out their search optimization, you should focus on correct selection keywords.

Creating subdomains on hosting

To create subdomains, a hosting control panel is often used. Thanks to this, most this process happens in automatic mode.

Let's take a step-by-step look at how to create a subdomain for your website through the admin panel of your account on the hosting resource:

The use of subdomains is accompanied by a large number of difficulties, mainly related to promotion and search engine optimization. Therefore, their use is justified on large-volume resources to separate a large thematic section into a separate resource. And also when promoting a product or service at the regional level.

Whatever one may say, almost everyone needs skills in hosting files. Especially if you are directly involved in your website. Topic about how to create a subdomain on TimeWeb hosting is not new, but many have not yet learned how to create it.

I say this not by hearsay, because... I do freelance work. And when communicating with a large number of clients who do not at all strive to understand the technical aspects of business, in which, of course, they are right in their own way, you come with them (by the way) to the conclusion that there are no, but basic technical skills in servicing your resource are still necessary.

At least in order to understand what is meant in many situations we're talking about, as well as to manage your resources.

In this article:

Just in this short post I will tell you how to create a subdomain on . And after reading and also applying everything that I write below, you can easily create a subdomain on your hosting, and even more than once.

I have been familiar with TimeWeb hosting for more than one year. When I posted my first files on this hosting, it was a pretty cool site, and was even trending.

However, time passed, many good and not so good reviews appeared, but as for me, I have not experienced and do not experience any problems with this hosting for a long time.

Therefore, in this short introduction I just want to recommend it to you as a reliable platform for your resources.

Why do you need to create a subdomain?

For example, in order for many services to skip your site for various registrations and advertising companies.

I’ll just give an example with the same YouTube, in whose account it is possible to link your website, and then when publishing the next video, use your website as external link in the video you created.

In YouTube, your site is linked through Google webmaster. And after you confirm it, you can safely advertise it in your videos.

If you create on the site separate folder and in it, for example, place some kind of one-page website, which you then want to advertise in your videos, then there will be no problems either.

Problems will arise when you want to use another view YouTube advertising- through advertising network GoogleAdwords, because this network accepts only separate domains. Those. neither folder nor separate files on your website, namely 2nd or 3rd level domains.

Yes, of course, you can create another domain, place your one-page there and then advertise it in videos. And it is right.

But what if you don't want to do this? promote exactly your website? This is where the subdomain you created on your main site will come to the rescue.

And taking into account the fact that you can create a large number of such subdomains, the problems with one-page advertising through the GoogleAdwords advertising network disappear.

Now directly about how to create a subdomain on hosting.

How to create a subdomain

There are some features and sequences that need to be performed exactly as I will write below.

The tools that I will use are the TimeWeb hosting account, as well as the program Adobe Dreamweaver CC 2015, which will be needed to connect to your site’s files via FTP and make some changes to the site structure.

The first step is to go to your personal hosting account to create a subdomain. For this:

After logging into your personal account, select the “Domains and subdomains” section in the left menu.

Find your site on which you want to create a subdomain, in my case it is fundamentonline.ru, and click on the “Add subdomain” icon, as in the picture below.

That's it, you have created a subdomain. I got it like this:

There is nothing more to do on this site, because... You have received all the necessary data and now the main work will take place in Adobe Dreamweaver.

Create a subdomain in Dreamweaver CC 2015

By the way, you can use absolutely any program.

Firstly, you can use the hosting itself and there continue the actions that we will do. To do this, on your hosting, go to the “File Manager” section and then to the folder of your site.

Secondly, You can use, for example, a program such as "FileZilla FTP Client"or any other similar one.

The essence does not change here. Your task is to get to the files of your site, where you will perform the necessary operations.

The difference between these different ways only that when using programs, you also need access data for FTP protocol. On TimeWeb hosting you can immediately edit your files without FTP access.

You can find out FTP access for use in programs in 2 ways.

First- find the letter that you received from the hosting when registering your account. It contains the data for accessing files via the FTP protocol.

Second- on the left side of the personal account menu, at the very bottom, find the “Return to” button old panel" Click on it and on the left side of the site there will be various service data. You need to find the line “Server” and just opposite it the server you are using will be indicated, and the IP address in brackets.

You need it, because... for FTP access on TimeWeb hosting, either the name of the hosting itself or this same IP is used.

The default hostname on TimeWeb is "watson.timeweb.ru" (without quotes). As you can see, I have MOLLY, because... I also use on hosting smtp server. Your name must be “Watson”.

So, to access via FTP in Adobe Dreamweaver you must have the following data:

  1. Hostname: in my case it is 92.53.98.90
  2. The login you use to log into your personal hosting account.
  3. The password you use to log into your personal hosting account.

Creating a subdomain in the program

If you, like me, use Adobe program Dreamweaver CC 2015, then in order to connect to your site you need to do the following:

1. Open the program and create a new website. To do this, go to the “Web Site” menu (in the main menu of the program) and click on the “New Site” submenu

Some explanation: Now you are connecting to your main site through the Adobe Dreamweaver program. When you connect, then continue to create a subdomain on the existing site.

2. In the window that opens, you will see a window with the “Website” item highlighted on the left. On the right side of the window, write the name of your site, for example, “My Site” and just below indicate the path to the folder in which all the files of your site will be stored.

To store site files on your computer, do the following... Create a folder in a convenient location on your computer, and in the program window, click on the folder icon (to the right of the second field). Next, in the window that opens, select the folder you created.

This can be any folder on your computer. It is advisable, of course, that you create this folder with a name that is familiar to you and that you can easily find in the future. For example, as in my case “H:\ - OpenServer - domains - youtube-roliki.loc - subdomen”

3. Let’s go to the next item “Servers”, where you will connect to your site via the FTP protocol. In this window, click on the plus sign located at the bottom (look at the picture).

The following window will open in which:

  • Enter the server name. For example, “Remote site”.
  • Connect using FTP.
  • In the line " FTP address» write the host name.
  • Fill in the fields “User name.” and "Password".
  • And finally, in the “URL address” line, enter the address of your site.

After filling out the above fields, click on the “Test” button to check that the data you entered is correct and for Adobe Dreamweaver to check the connection.

If you have entered the data correctly, you will see the following window:

Click on the “OK” button and then on the “Save” button. On the right, in the servers window you will see a new entry.

Now you need to go to your website to copy all your files from the hosting to your newly created folder on your computer.

6. To do this, go to the right window of the program, where your folder will be indicated, and click on the “Remote server” item, which is indicated in the drop-down menu in the figure.

Since you did not specify the exact root directory of your site in the hosting connection settings (and this, in principle, is not necessary), you will see a folder tree with all the files on your hosting. For example, like mine.

All files on your site are located in the “public_html” folder and it is in this folder that you will create a subdomain on TimeWeb.

Let's start creating a subdomain

To begin, copy your website to a folder you created on your computer. This is done very simply.

Select all the folders and files that are in your “public_html” folder and in the window remote server Click on the down arrow.

All files from the remote server will be copied to your computer exactly in the folder that you created.

When you switch again to the local server, i.e. to your local folder, You can already observe the files you copied. For example, like mine.

1. Create a folder for your subdomain

Now in the folder at local server(on your computer) create a folder named after your subdomain that you created in personal account hosting TimeWeb.

In my case this is the "less-blog" folder.

To create this folder, right-click on the “public_html” folder and create a folder.

2. Connecting a subdomain to hosting

Create this file just like in the example, without extensions - i.e. put a dot in front and then htaccess.

Double-click the left mouse button to open this file in Adobe Dreamweaver and in code mode, paste the following code.

RewriteEngine On
#RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %(HTTP_HOST) ^(www.)?subdomain_name\.site_name\.(com|ru)$
RewriteCond %(REQUEST_URI) !/subdomain_name/
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /subdomain_name/$1 [L]

Edit the code as follows:

  • Instead of “subdomain_name” write the name of your subdomain.
  • Instead of “site_name”, write the name of your site without the domain zone (i.e. without .ru, .com).

The domain zone is written in brackets, and if you domain zone differs from “com” or “ru”, then accordingly insert your value into brackets instead of, for example, com.

My example looks like this:

After this, save the “.htaccess” file and go to the folder of your subdomain in order to check your subdomain for functionality.

To do this, in a subdomain folder (in my case it’s “less-blog”), create a file “index.html” and write something in it... For example, “Hello, world!”

After this, save all files and transfer your subdomain folder to the remote server.

This is done by analogy with how you copied remote files on computer. Only in this case, now click on the adjacent button that shows “up”.

Those. select the subdomain folder and copy it to the remote server.

3. Check the created subdomain in the browser

The last thing you need to do is check the subdomain you created in your browser.

To do this, open your browser and enter a construct like:

Your_subdomain.your_domain.domain_zone

If you did all the previous steps correctly, then in your browser you should already see the inscription “Example, peace!”

That's it, you have created your subdomain and placed your files on it.

Now, if you want to create, for example, a one-page website and place it on a subdomain of your site, then you already know how to do it.

In fact, if you did exactly as I demonstrated above, then you learned not just to create a subdomain, but an entire website in general - through a convenient and useful program Adobe Dreamweaver.

If you want to get acquainted with this program in more detail, then it is best to go to my YouTube channel.

Moreover, starting from version CC 2015, bootstrap is also connected.

Wishing you great success and effective management of your projects!

You read that it couldn't be easier. The way it is! If you know what and how to do.

Choosing a name for the subdomain

Today I invite you to see how I created a subdomain for trainings for my website “Psychologist Vasily Senchenko” hosted by Majordomo.
We have a second level domain name rus-planeta.ru
Coming up with a subdomain name training.
We only use english letters, numbers and hyphen.
Getting a third-level domain name training.rus-planeta.ru

Registering a third-level domain name for a subdomain

We will register your third-level domain name - subdomain. Majordomo hosting allows owners of second-level domain names to create third-level domain names without restrictions.

Log in to the control panel of your Majordomo hosting account. In the left column, go to the “Domains” section, then “Subdomains”.

Let's go to the central part of the screen. From the drop-down list, select the domain to which you want to create a subdomain. I chose the domain name rus-planeta.ru, on which the site is located "Psychologist Vasily Senchenko" .

Automatic creation subdomains are switched to the “enabled” state. This word turns green. We study the hosting recommendations and move on.

We study the list of subdomains that have already been created for this domain. If desired, we can click on the “Delete” button and the corresponding subdomain will be deleted. Three subdomains have been created for the domain name rus-planeta.ru. They are all in working order, you can check them in person.
Name: http://colortherapy.rus-planeta.ru
Name: http://kamushky.rus-planeta.ru
Name: http://webstudio.rus-planeta.ru

Now we come to the “Create a subdomain” section. We enter the training subdomain we need in the empty box in front of the domain name.

The “Path” cell can be left free, then the subdomain will open at http://training.rus-planeta.ru. We choose this option and leave the box empty.

If you want the subdomain to open at both http://training.rus-planeta.ru and http://rus-planeta.ru/training, then the subdomain must be located in the www directory of the second-level domain name and indicate the correct path. This will be www/rus-planetaru/. You should not put a dot between the domain name rus-planeta and the zone.ru.

We determine the location of the scripts for the subdomain - in our cgi-bin directory. You can also select it in the cgi-bin directory of the main domain. cgi-bin is the folder in the directory into which the special programs for the site, scripts.

Click the “Create” button and wait a few seconds. And at the beginning of the page we see the message “The subdomain was created successfully. It will be available within 10 minutes."

Look a little lower “Subdomains created manually.” The subdomain we created appeared in the list.

Why is nothing visible on the subdomain?

While the subdomain is being created on the hosting, we continue to work. I'm guessing you're eager to find out what happened. Try to go to the address of the newly created subdomain. Did you see anything and even received an error message from the hosting? What can you see if we haven’t uploaded any information to this address? A domain address, like a flag, just indicates the location where the information is located.

Now is the time to upload information to the address of our subdomain, speaking in Russian, to create a website. We have two options to create a website: manually or automatically.

Manually installing a website on a subdomain

To check the subdomain, let's create a site from one page named index.html or index.php. You can download a sample of such a page (stub) index.php

Instructions. Hover, click right button mouse, select "Save Target As". Unpack the resulting archive. In the index.php file, use the Notepad++ notepad to make the changes you need and upload it to your hosting. Use the site for your health. When you make a full-size site, be sure to delete or rename this file, for example, to index-2.html.

The first option is to create a website on a subdomain manually. In this case, using FTP access, all the information necessary for the site is uploaded to the hosting; at least one file named index.html or index.php is required.

So, let's open the FTP login. I use the free one Filezilla program, which can be downloaded here http://filezilla-project.org/. Using the site manager, we select our second-level domain name rus-planeta.ru. We see that all three previously created subdomains are located here.

Place the cursor on top line in the lower table, right-click and select “Create directory”. Enter the name of our subdomain and click OK.

We open the folder of our subdomain, it is still completely empty. We quickly upload the site into it in the form of a single index.php file.

Now let’s access our subdomain at http://training.rus-planeta.ru, we see the picture on the screen and enjoy our work. All! Congratulations! Together we manually created a website on a third-level subdomain.

Automatic installation of a site on a subdomain

The second option is to create a website automatically on a subdomain using a hosting service. Log in to the Majordomo hosting control panel. On the left, select “Website creation - Our applications”. Select the “Personal Website” image.

Next, follow the instructions on the pages. Please have your FTP password ready for verification. Then specify the training subdomain name, select the rus-planeta.ru domain from the drop-down list, specify the database and click the “Finish” button.

On the next page for installing the site, you will be told your address, password and login to access the site’s control panel and will be asked to wait a few minutes until the site installation is completed. Make a note of this information in case you do not receive an information message by email.

About ten minutes later we contact our subdomain at http://training.rus-planeta.ru, we see the picture on the screen and enjoy our work. All! Congratulations! Together we automatically created a website on a third-level subdomain.

This concludes our work. Thank you for attention!
Good luck on the Internet!
