Making a transparent background in paint.net

To remove the background, you need to select it. In our example, the background is white, but it doesn’t matter what it is for selection:

  1. We take a tool - a magic wand;
  2. Selection mode – replacement or merging;
  3. Filling is continuous; if you select “global”, then non-adjacent white pixels will also be selected, for example, inside a shoe, but we don’t need this now;
  4. Set the sensitivity to about 40%, the higher the percentage, the more similar colors will appear in the selection;
  5. Click on the "magic wand" White background.

If you see that the selection has affected areas of the main image, then reduce the sensitivity.

Now go to “Edit” and select the line “Clear selection”, or simply press the “Del” key - cells will appear in the form of a chessboard, this is how a transparent background is indicated.

But in our example, that’s not all, the shoe has a strap at the top, which means the area where the checkmark is should also be transparent.

Take the “magic wand” again and click on this white area.
There is no clear boundaries, in fact, this happens in most images, so the selection will have to be modified . Choose one of three tools: oval, lasso or rectangle - it depends on your image and the shape of the image. Choose a tool that you think will be easier to use.
At the top, activate “Combination” or “Subtraction” (when you hover the cursor, these tips appear).

Merging – if you need to add something to an already selected area.
Subtraction - on the contrary, you need to remove some part from the selected area.

Don't be afraid to make a mistake, you can always return to the original version.

So, we modify the selection as necessary and remove the white background.

Removing the background with an eraser

There is another interesting option removing the background with the Eraser tool.

To do this, you also need to make a selection, and with an eraser you can remove not the entire background, but for example half, and you don’t have to be afraid to erase the main image - The eraser will only erase in the selected area.

In practice, you come across complex backgrounds - gradient, overflow, various patterns. In this case, the background is removed gradually; the sensitivity of the “magic wand” is set to low, approximately 20-30%.
Next, click on the background - some part will be highlighted, delete it.
Select the next part and delete it again, and so on until the entire background becomes transparent. But this way you might miss some pixels, so better mode Set the selection to “Merge” and click with the wand on all unselected areas. And of course, don’t forget about the oval, lasso, and rectangle tools. With their help, we add or subtract the desired areas of the image.

The free Paint.NET program does not have as many features as many others. However, you can use it to create a transparent background in a picture without much effort.

So, you need a certain object in the image to have a transparent background instead of the existing one. All methods have a similar principle: areas of the image that should be transparent are simply removed. But taking into account the characteristics of the original background, you will have to use different Paint.NET tools.

Method 1: Selection "Magic wand"

The background that you will delete must be selected so that the main content is not affected. If we are talking about an image with a white or the same type of background, devoid of various elements, then you can use the tool "Magic wand".

  1. Open the image you want and click "Magic wand" in the toolbar.
  2. To select a background, simply click on it. You will see a characteristic stencil along the edges of the main object. Carefully examine the highlighted area. For example, in our case "Magic wand" grabbed several places on the mug.
  3. In this case, you need to reduce the sensitivity a little until the situation improves.

    As you can see, the stencil now runs exactly along the edges of the mug. If "Magic wand" on the contrary, if you left pieces of the background around the main object, then you can try to increase the sensitivity.

  4. In some images, the background may be visible within the main content and does not immediately stand out. This is what happened with the white background inside the handle of our mug. To add it to the selection area, click the button "An association" and click on the desired area.
  5. When everything you want to be transparent is selected, click "Edit" And "Clear selection", or you can just press a button Del.
  6. As a result, you will get a background in the form of a chessboard - this is how transparency is visually depicted. If you notice that somewhere it turned out unevenly, you can always cancel the action by pressing the appropriate button and eliminate the shortcomings.

  7. All that remains is to save the result of your labors. Click "File" And "Save as".
  8. To maintain transparency, it is important to save the image in the format "GIF" or "PNG", and the latter is preferable.
  9. All values can be left as default. Click "OK".

Method 2: Crop by selection

If we are talking about a picture with a varied background, which "Magic wand" If you can’t handle it, but the main object is more or less homogeneous, then you can select it and cut off everything else.

Adjust sensitivity if necessary. When everything you need is highlighted, just click the button "Crop to selection".

As a result, everything that was not included in the selected area will be deleted and replaced with a transparent background. All that remains is to save the image in the format "PNG".

Method 3: Select using "Lasso"

This option is convenient if you are dealing with a non-uniform background and the same main object that cannot be captured "Magic wand".

These simple methods of creating a transparent background in a picture can be used in the Paint.NET program. All you need is the ability to switch between different instruments and care when highlighting the edges of the desired object.

How to make a flare of light in paint.net?

Here we will look at a rather simple and effective moment, how to make a light highlight on an image using Paint.NET. It is no coincidence that this question is placed in the Paint.NET lessons for beginners section, because it is completed in one step.

We will create a sun flare on a 3D emoticon, which you can learn to draw in the Paint.NET lesson - How to create a funny 3D emoticon in Paint.NET. To draw the highlight of the light, we will use the Paint.NET Gradient tool.

So, let's choose white as the main color, and set transparent as the secondary color. To do this, the Transparency (Alpha) option in the Palette window in Paint.NET needs to be set to 0. In the image above, you can see that this option is located in the lower right corner. In the figure, the value of this parameter is indicated as 225 because the figure is presented for the base color - white, which is not transparent. Select the gradient type - circular, you can see how it looks in the above picture on the left top corner. And using the left mouse button, make a gradient in the place in the image where the color highlight should be. The result we got can be seen in the figure below. We specifically kept the gradient markers in the image below.

How to make a drawing with a transparent background in paint.net? How to replace white background color with transparent?

If you want to make a picture with a transparent background, for example, to place it on a website, then, first of all, you can immediately draw the image on transparent layer in Paint.NET. If you already have a picture, for example, with a white background, like the butterfly in the picture, then you will first need to remove the white background.

To remove the background, you can use, for example, the magic wand tool, in our example in the leftmost picture. After the area required for deletion has been selected - the middle picture - you can delete it by pressing the Del button. If you end up seeing a checkerboard pattern underneath the image, like in the image on the far right, then this means that the area of the image where you see the checkerboard pattern is transparent.

Note, that transparent backgrounds are supported by the two main formats, PNG or GIF. If you save an image with a transparent background, such as a JPG, then Paint.NET will replace the transparent background color with white because JPG format does not support transparent images.

What better format PNG or GIF? Both of these formats support transparent colors and can be used for display in modern Internet browsers. Unlike the GIF format, the 32-bit PNG format supports not just transparent colors, but also translucent tones. On the other hand, transparent colors in 32-bit images PNG format are not always displayed correctly in older Internet browsers, for example Internet Explorer 6.
