It turned out ugly, but the piezo speaker under the screen, like in Xiaomi Mi Mix, does not shine with quality (so much so that the Chinese abandoned it in Mi Mix 2), the front camera is at chin level and the indentation for sensors is there - the same level of insanity as "neckline" in iPhone X.

But there is a solid screen at the bottom instead of a “beard” and the dimensions are like the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) with a 5-inch display. Even in the “frameless” LG Q6, with the same dimensions, only a 5.5-inch (and not 5.8”, like the iPhone) display fits - the iPhone X is incredibly compact.

But political wisdom says that “those who do not understand will understand.” We have just such a situation - those who loved Apple smartphones before will whine for a long time, will suffer financially, but will buy at least a basic modification of the iPhone X. Anyone who wants “something similar, but cheaper” will buy a Samsung Galaxy S8 from small resellers for 38 -40 thousand. The most economical guys will wait until Huawei and Xiaomi learn to make frameless flagships, and will buy this stuff for 25-28 thousand on Aliexpress in December-February.

iPhone X is unlikely to be taken as quickly as more cheap models, but it will not go unnoticed - Apple fans have been waiting for a “revolution” in mobile phone design for too long, and have long been ready to pay for it.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 - “Make it like Samsung, but cheaper”

So Apple has the rights of a legislator, and thanks to the beautifully structured interaction of computers, mobile phones and stores of licensed stuff, they drive up prices and do not lose any prestige. But will they take the expensive Xiaomi for its merits in the style of “we have been selling you the most cheap smartphones with powerful processors! - doubtful. But the Chinese do not lose hope and passionately justify why Mi Mix 2 should become popular.

Because it has a solid ceramic body, a flagship processor, a 6-inch screen in a 5.5-inch body, and the minimum amount of RAM is the same as the maximum in the Samsung Galaxy S8. And the display is now with the same proportions, and not “squared”, as it was in the first generation Mi Mix.

Cool? Very! In terms of speed, organization of the display in the body and body materials, this is so far the only Chinese rival to the Galaxy S8 and iPhone X.

Only it is not a competitor in other respects - the screen is beautiful, but in terms of quality it does not reach the “best” models. There is no water protection, there is no headphone jack (adapters came in Chinese models) the cameras are cheap, the sound in the headphones is also not outstanding, the battery life is average. But the price, to put it mildly, is not average: when ordering from China, Xiaomi will cost only 5 thousand less than the Samsung Galaxy S8. It’s scary to imagine how much they will ask for Mi Mix 2 in the official Russian store. And what’s also a little confusing is the fact that the “elite Chinese phone” OnePlus 5, which is not frameless, but better in all other respects, costs 28 thousand. The new Korean LG G6 costs the same amount with a clearer screen, more quality cameras and water protection (with an old processor, though).

In general, an attempt to push Samsung flagships and Apple with the most expensive Xiaomi model will end up beating the latter in most respects. And the Mi Mix 2 will have difficulty competing with its Chinese relatives due to impracticality and poor cameras - there is a risk that the Huawei Mate 10 with a new processor and 18:9 screen will be ahead in almost all respects and not much more expensive.

It turns out that Xiaomi has built a high-speed “cruiser” with huge screen and good autonomy. Here it is, a replacement for the second generation Xiaomi Mi Note and the only “moderately large” Xiaomi in the 2017 model range.

At the same time, Mi Note 3 was reclassified from a “cheaper substitute for Samsung Galaxy Note 5/7” into a completely new model. Coincidence? Don't think!

I’m trying to find competitors for Mi Note 3 with a similar construction idea and I understand that such smartphones were no longer produced in 2017. During this wonderful time, smartphone manufacturers suddenly faced a situation where people, frightened by the new realities, stopped spending money on flagships at new prices and, at best, bought models at the price that appeared before the price increase.

In Russia, the prices for them, however, were still inadequate, because with an exchange rate of 75 rubles per dollar it was impossible to do otherwise. But the Brazilians and other Latin Americans appreciated the maneuver.

In 2017, no one is engaged in such activities anymore - there is no point in changing only the processor in a full-fledged flagship, if they are already buying it. And those who need cheaper smartphones buy all sorts of “Lite/mini/Play” or smartphones with a standard name instead of full-fledged flagships with the Plus/Premium/Pro index. There are not even larger or smaller smartphones with average-power processors and cameras straight from the flagship. In this regard, Mi Note 3 is unique.

And yet, the main drama unfolded around the processor. With the departure of the powerful, but hot and old Snapdragon 650/652, Qualcomm plugged the hole in model range the cheap Snapdragon 625 was “boosted” to the limit. And it did, although it turned out to be so deeply “cut off” in comparison with the Snapdragon 835 that it was inferior even to last year’s flagship, the Snapdragon 820. That is, history repeated itself when the Snapdragon 652 replaced the 808 and 810 models. But this chip has become much faster in games (by 30%, according to Qualcomm), it performs better in applications, and it has a dedicated chip for photo and video processing. That is, the difference in processor power should not affect the quality of photos and videos in Mi Note 3.

In general, the new Xiaomi product has a right to exist - only cheaper flagships costing 27–30 thousand rubles can ruin its sales. Because last year’s OnePlus takes pictures no worse than the Mi Note 3 a year later, and taking into account the “inferior” processor in Xiaomi, it also turns out to be faster. And we shouldn’t forget about models that are sharply losing in price either: HTC 10 and LG G6, with a difference of about 3-4 thousand rubles from Xiaomi, are in almost all respects better than the controversial new Mi-series.
