How to install Russian fonts for Photoshop cs6. How to Add a New Font in Photoshop

In order to add a new font in Adobe Photoshop, you will first need to select and download the font we need.

Where to download a beautiful font for Photoshop

There is no concept of a special font for Adobe Photoshop as such; just download any universal font you like in the most common TrueType format. This is a file with the extension “*.ttf” (for example Arial.ttf)
On request in search engine Yandex “download fonts” I chose the very first site in the list, and we’ll trust it. On the site, all fonts are sorted into appropriate sections (decorative, handwritten, etc.), this will help us choose the right font.

Note:

I would like to note that many fonts, despite the fact that they may be in the section with Russian fonts, can only support the Latin alphabet, so before downloading, make sure that the font supports the Cyrillic alphabet (Russian letters).

To do this, the site has a form for checking the selected font before downloading, it is very convenient. Enter any phrase and specify the font size (as shown in the picture below). Press the “Look” button and if you like the font, you can start downloading.

When searching for a font, I advise you to use an even more convenient feature of the site - enter the desired text directly into a special field.

And then your phrase will be displayed for all fonts in all sections of the site and you won’t have to manually type the text for the font you like every time.

I ended up choosing a pretty cute font called "kot leopold" that I found in a children's font catalogue.

How to install a downloaded font

In this section I will try to describe all the ways to install fonts for Photoshop.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you need to choose which one is more suitable for your situation.

Note:

The described methods have been discussed in detail and tested by me personally in the Windows 7 operating system. Whatever version you have operating system Windows, the procedure and path to folders in the described methods will be approximately the same or intuitive, so I think it won’t be difficult to figure it all out.

Method number 1. We use our own installer for the downloaded font

Advantages:

1. This method is very convenient and easy, guaranteed to work in Windows 7.

3. Doesn't slow down Photoshop.

Instructions:

Open the downloaded file. In the window that appears, select “Install.” After this, the font will be installed in the desired location and will become available to everyone text editors, including Photoshop.

Also in the window that appears, you can immediately see what the font will look like.

If you have XP, then you need to go to “Start” > “Control Panel” > “Fonts”, then in the menu select “File” > “Install Font”... then specify the location of the font, select it and install it.

Method number 2. By copying to the system folder of the Windows operating system

Advantages:

2. The installed font will function in all programs (MS Word, graphics programs) using your operating system fonts.
3. Doesn't slow down Photoshop.
4. Does not require installation of additional software.

For Windows 7 the order is as follows. Go to Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts/View, delete, show, and hide fonts.

If the names or paths of these sections differ in your version of the operating system, you can type the word “fonts” in the search

In the window that opens, you will see the existing fonts. Then you just need to select all the downloaded fonts and copy them (you can simply drag them with the mouse) into this window. After this, all copied fonts will become available to installed programs, including for Photoshop.

Method No. 3. By copying directly to the system folder of the Windows operating system

Advantages:

1. Save time. If you have downloaded several fonts from the site and want to install them all at once.
2. The installed font will function in all programs (MS Word, graphics programs) that use the fonts of your operating system.
3. Doesn't slow down Photoshop.
4. Does not require installation of additional software.

For everyone who has WINDOWS 7, open the “C” drive, the “Windows” folder, then the “Fonts” folder and transfer the downloaded fonts there.

Method number 4. Loading a font only into Photoshop, through installation in the system folder

Advantages:

1. Allows you to add fonts of a different format.

Flaws:

1. This method may slow down Photoshop when installing a large number of fonts.

If the fonts are not TrueType, or are needed only in Photoshop, then it makes sense to copy them to the program folder itself. To do this, go to the “C:” drive > “Program Files” folder > “Common Files” > “Adobe” > “Fonts”. And copy here the font files that you want to use to work in Photoshop.
This installation method ensures that all fonts will be installed and displayed in Photoshop; they will not be displayed in other programs.

Note:

If the “Fonts” folder is missing in this directory, just create it and place the fonts there. But keep in mind that a large number of fonts may cause the program to malfunction.

Method No. 5. Installing a font in Photoshop through special programs, without installing it into the Windows and Photoshop operating systems

Advantages:

1. Does not slow down Photoshop and the operating system as a whole.
2. You don't need to install fonts in Windows to view them in action.
3. Allows you to activate different formats fonts.

In cases where you have to use a large number of fonts, you can use programs such as Adobe Type Manager, Adobe Type Manager Deluxe and Fonts Expert. These programs allow you to quickly activate only those fonts or sets of fonts that you currently need, and deactivate them after work. Here in the program you can view the selected font without installing it into the operating system. This allows you to avoid overloading the system in cases where you have to look through hundreds of fonts in search of the right one, only to use it once and forget it forever.

This method also allows you to load non-standard font formats. It happens that the downloaded font has from two to four files(“*.PFB”, “*.PFM”, “*.AFM” and “*.INF” formats). But at the same time, the presence of a file with the extension “*.PFM” is mandatory; if it is not there, you can convert existing files to “*.PFM”, for this you can use Adobe program Type Manager. Installation, if there is a “*.PFM” file, can be done by any in a convenient way described in this article.

How to Activate an Installed Font in Photoshop

In order to activate installed font need to be done standard actions. Go to Adobe Photoshop, open the list of fonts in the text control panel, select the font that you just installed and want to use. As you can see, everything is very simple.

If the font is archived, the archive must first be unpacked.
If, after installing the font, the program does not process Russian letters (the letters are displayed in the standard style, or squiggles appear instead of letters), but it prints perfectly in Latin, then this font does not support the Cyrillic alphabet.
If for some reason you were unable to install the font using any of the methods, try installing a different font; the file may simply be damaged.

I hope that in my article you will definitely find a suitable method for yourself and easily install the font you need.

Friends, welcome to the site about Photoshop and design!

Recently, one of the readers received a question, as a result of which this short article or note arose, so it will probably be easier to say.

It’s probably no secret that when designing various design works, printing, creating postcards, vignettes with texts, it is not enough to have standard pre-installed fonts. I want to create an original, attractive and special work, but the text in the design often takes last place. The right font will help decorate your work.

As a result, the question arises, where can I get new fonts for Photoshop?

We can find and select all fairly simple fonts using the Internet. By typing in any search engine, be it Yandex or Google search query « font» The search engine will return a huge number of sites with various handwritten, decorative, foreign and other fonts that you can view and download to your computer.

After the font is downloaded, you can view it by clicking on the font file. In the window that opens, you will see how this or that letter will look when written. Please note that some fonts do not support stylized writing of the Russian alphabet, and in this case, after installing this font and writing Russian text, you will receive text with a standard font.

Next, we need to install the font in the folder with operating system fonts, from where Photoshop and other programs that work with text will take them. There are 3 ways to add fonts to Photoshop, I usually use the simplest one. I would like to note that I have Windows 7 installed.

Method 1. Open the font itself by clicking on it with the mouse and pressing the button install. The font will automatically be installed in the folder with operating system fonts, and therefore added to Photoshop.

Method 2. Copy font to fonts folder C:\Windows\Fonts

Method 3. Copy the font by going to the fonts folder Start >Control Panel >Fonts.

This is all the font is installed, after which it will automatically be added to Adobe Photoshop, and you can easily use it.

You can also use Adobe Type Manager. The program allows you to instantly activate, add only those fonts or sets of fonts that you need, and deactivate them after work.

Read about how to work with fonts in Photoshop. I also recommend it, it will help you visually select the font for your work.

Lesson topic: how to install fonts in Photoshop. The lesson is based on the CS6 version, but it can be applied to CS5 and other versions.

To add fonts to the editor, you need to have them on your computer. Just download them from any site that provides this option. But be careful when choosing - not all fonts support the Cyrillic alphabet, that is, the Russian alphabet.

In order for fonts to be displayed correctly in Adobe Photoshop, you should select them with the extension .ttf (TrueType) or .otf (OpenType), of which the first is the most common.

Methods for installing fonts

Fonts are installed in system folder computer, sometimes into the program itself. There is conflicting information about where it is better to add them. Some argue that you should not add it to the system folder, as it becomes full and all editors with text support will become slow. Others believe that you should not overload Photoshop new settings to make it work faster. Both are right - both the editor and the OS become heavier with a large volume of files. To prevent this from happening, you can use special programs. Let everyone choose the best option for themselves.

In any case, the archive downloaded from the Internet must first be unzipped.

Native font installer

The method works flawlessly on Windows and Vista systems.

Option 1. Open the file with the font - at the top there is an Install button. Click it - the font goes to the system folder and becomes available to all text editors.

If the button is inactive, then this font already exists in the folder.

Option 2. Without opening the file, select it, and right click mouse to call up the context menu. In it, select the Install command. It will download to the system folder.

These methods are good when you need to insert 1 – 3 fonts. If there are more of them, it is better to use other methods.

To the OS system folder

In the XP system, go to Start → Control Panel → Fonts. In the window that opens: Menu → File → Install font. It becomes possible to find the required file on your computer. We find and install.

In OS Windows library fonts is located in the Fonts folder, which can be accessed in two ways. Along the way:

  1. Start → Control Panel → Appearance and Personalization → Fonts.
  2. My computer → Drive C → Windows →Fonts.

If your computer is running MAC OS, you should look for the Fonts folder in the Library directory.

On Linux systems, a folder with the same name is located one level lower - in the share directory in the usr folder. The path will be like this: /usr/share/fonts.

The folder was found. Open it and insert the fonts.

By dragging. Next to the Fonts folder, open the folder with fonts. Select the desired file or several, hold it with the mouse and drag it to Fonts.

Copying. We highlight necessary files, copy them using Ctrl+C or click on the selected one right mouse and in context menu select Copy. You can also select the Cut command if you do not intend to leave these fonts in this folder.

Then go to the Fonts folder, right-click on the white field between the files (not on the file!), select the Paste command.

How to Install Fonts in Photoshop Editor

You can insert files of other formats into Photoshop itself, not just TrueType.

You can use the copying method described above, with the difference that you need to paste them into the system folder of the editor itself. It is located along the path: drive C → Program Files → Common Files → Adobe → Fonts. They will work in Photoshop, but will remain unavailable for other programs.

Tip: after installation, the fonts will appear in Photoshop immediately. If this does not happen, restart the editor.

Using manager programs

There are various programs that make it easy to activate a large number of fonts of different, even non-standard formats, and deactivate them when they are no longer needed.

The main advantage is that they do not create a load on either the operating system or Photoshop. Here are the names of some of them:

  • Adobe Type Manager;
  • Hpfonts;
  • Adobe Type Manager Deluxe;
  • Fonts Expert.

The second two make it possible to use them only within graphic editor, which can be quite useful for designers who are forced to install and try out huge quantities various options, which sometimes negatively affects the operation of the system as a whole.
