Socket for TV cable. TV socket: how to install a TV socket

At the moment, on the market you can find a single, terminal and pass-through TV socket. All these products differ not only in name and have different designs and purposes.

Out of ignorance, many people do not use them quite correctly. This causes dissatisfaction with the quality of the TV signal. Therefore, in order not to become a victim of ignorance, let’s look at the types of TV sockets, and also determine what each of them is needed for.

In order to properly understand, as well as understand where which type is used, we should consider not only their design, but also the connection diagrams. After all, for distributing a television signal, depending on its frequency, different connection schemes are used.

Arrangement of different types of TV sockets

Let's start with the differences that TV outlets have. This difference is due to different areas of application, which we will discuss below.

So:

  • Let's start with the simplest single TV socket. This outlet is simply a contact connection that allows you to connect the TV's antenna cable to the outlet. As the instructions from the manufacturing plants say, the signal drop level on them does not exceed 1 - 2 dB, which is due only to the transition resistances of the contact connections.
  • in this regard it is much more difficult. In addition to the direct contact connection, it contains a special circuit that is designed to extinguish the reflected signal.

What is this scheme and why is it needed?

The fact is that any TV not only receives a television signal, but also sends part of it to the network. The part that it gives off is usually called the reflected signal. The power of the reflected signal is not so high compared to the main one, but in total from several TVs it can cause significant interference.

  1. You may see the reflected signal on another TV as interference or as a superimposed image. And in order to avoid this, a special circuit is used that dampens the reflected signal.
  2. As a result, the terminal socket, in addition to losses of 1 - 2 dB caused by switching resistances, also has losses of 8 to 15 dB caused by the operation of this filter.

Note! GOST 28324-89 clearly states that the signal level should be 57 - 83 dB. An increase, and even more so a decrease in signal power leads to interference and a decrease in image quality. As a result, we find that even one terminal socket significantly reduces the signal level.

  • But the design of a pass-through socket is even more complicated. In addition to the direct contact connection and filter, it has another contact connection for connecting other TV sockets. As a result, the signal drop at such an outlet can reach 15 - 20 dB.

Connection diagrams for TV sockets

So why do you need a TV outlet if it reduces the signal quality so much? The point here is in the connection diagrams for TV outlets. Each of these circuits uses its own type of sockets. Therefore, let's look at this issue in more detail.

So:

  • Let's start our analysis with the so-called “star” scheme. The essence of this scheme comes down to the following. The TV signal power cable comes to the multiplier or as it is also called a splitter.
  1. A splitter divides a television signal into several channels of equal power. The number of channels depends on the type of device. There are splitters for two, three or more outputs.
  2. The splitter has the same circuit for suppressing the reflected signal. Therefore, you should not use sockets with additional signal suppression for it.
  3. Based on this, the signal from the splitter is supplied via a television cable to single TV sockets. The use of sockets of another type is not advisable since there will be double cancellation of the reflected signal, which will lead to a deterioration in image quality.

The main difference that characterizes a television outlet from an electrical outlet is the structure of the cable connected to the product. A coaxial cable consists of one solid core, enclosed in dense insulation with a screen of foil metal and thin steel wire, on top of which the entire structure is covered with an outer protective sheath of PVC insulation.

Important: the screen in a coaxial cable, also called asymmetrically shielded, has the function of protecting against high-frequency signals in the surrounding space. It prevents interference to which the signal received by the object is sensitive. In addition, the protective screen serves as a second conductor to ensure high-frequency current flows through the cable.

According to their functional purpose, television sockets are divided into three main types:

  • single sockets, their resistance is characterized by an insignificant value of internal resistance;
  • pass-through, installed in the middle of the loop, the cable is connected to these sockets on both sides,
  • the final ones are characterized by a large amount of internal resistance;

Single sockets are of a simple type and are considered a common electrical installation product; they are used to connect a television receiver. The work is carried out through a splitter or crab from one antenna.

A pass-through socket is used to connect two or more TVs; the connection occurs by dividing the television signal for each TV. The operation of the product is based on the supply of one cable from the antenna, the other cable leaves the outlet and is directed to the TV.

The termination socket is used to terminate a multi-socket television network. Main characteristics The internal wave impedance is large, up to 75 Ohms, it is equal to the wave impedance in the television line, due to this, the negative impact of television receivers on each other is reduced, as a result, the quality of the television signal is improved, and the picture of the television image is improved.

Operating frequencies typical for combined sockets

A television receiver (TV) operates at frequencies from 5 to 862 MHz.

Radio receiver ( FM ) its range is from 87.5 to 108 MHz.

Satellite television ( SAT ) from 95 to 2400 MHz.

Star terminal socket circuit - TV-RD-SAT, terminal or terminal sockets are used to improve image quality to get rid of interference, switching channels on one TV does not affect the image of another TV receiver.

Design features of television sockets

Modern TV sockets

Currently, designs for television sockets have been created that combine various functions - this is the connection of a television consumer ( TV) , radio points (FM) and satellite (SAT) receiver

According to schemes : TVR.D.SAT; TVFMSAT; TVR.D., for three and two output connectors, a socket that includes an abbreviation in its marking R.D., performs the function of a terminal socket. Connection is carried out according to the “star” and “loop” topology

Features of television sockets

Modern TV sockets in their design imply the presence of a main spring or screw terminal contact for connecting the central core of the television cable. An auxiliary terminal (special bracket) is used to connect the shielding braid. Pass-through sockets have two pairs of terminals for connecting incoming and outgoing cables.

Modern sockets from Legrand, ABB and other European brands do not require additional preparation of the television cable when connected; just insert the bare core into the contact terminal and it will automatically clamp it, puncturing the main insulation and clamping the cable. The connection is very reliable.

Star scheme

The TV socket for this circuit is used with one input and multiple outputs for 2; 3; 4 exits. The input signal must have enough power to provide a good TV signal, otherwise the picture from the latest TV receiver will be of poor quality.

Rice. No. 3. Star scheme.

To amplify the signal, a television amplifier is used, which will increase the signal power; it is recommended to install it next to the source of the television signal, directly in the switchboard or near the entrance of the input television cable to the apartment.

Recommendation: when installing a “star” television circuit. You cannot lay outgoing and incoming cables next to each other, as interference may occur and the quality of the television signal will decrease. The star circuit is the best option for connecting digital television. NV receivers are connected using a router, a function that can be performed by a digital splitter or hub. This could be a set-top box SD receiver CAM model; it is suitable for receiving an IPTV signal.

Scheme (pass-through) “loop”

The circuit uses series-connected feed-through sockets and a terminal socket. There is virtually no signal quality degradation in the circuit; the quality depends on the correct connection of the television cable to the F-connector. Using this connection makes it possible to connect three TVs from pass-through sockets and two more from a single (individual) and from a dead-end socket.

Rice. No. 3 Feed-through circuit for connecting television sockets.

The wiring of the “loop” and “star” circuits is carried out through a splitter, which serves as a separator of the TV and SAT signal into equal parts without loss of signal quality, and the splitter is also used as a signal combiner. In addition to the splitter, the TAP splitter performs a similar function; it divides the signal into several outputs. Splitter used for television receivers use an operating frequency of 1Hz, devices that perform a similar function for satellite receivers have a frequency of up to 2.5GHz.

Write comments or additions to the article, maybe I missed something. Take a look at, I will be glad if you find anything else useful on mine.

In this article you will learn how to install and connect a Legrand TV socket, as well as how to connect a TV socket to a TV. In order not to waste your time, I will not talk about installing a socket box, since an entire article is devoted to this point. We will agree that the socket box is already installed and the TV cable is connected to it.

To understand the process of connecting a TV outlet, you need to talk a little about the design of a coaxial TV cable. I used a cable marked RG-6U CCA (75 Ohm).

  1. PVC sheath
  2. External conductor (screen), consisting of metal braid and foil coated with a layer of aluminum
  3. Dielectric - insulation made of polyethylene or semi-air dielectric filling
  4. Internal conductor represented by a single copper core

I would like to note that the TV cable can be presented in another design, for example, the screen can consist of copper wires, and the internal conductor can be multi-core, but we will focus on this design.

2. Preparing the TV cable for connection

To connect to a television outlet, we need to prepare a cable connected to the socket box. For this:

1 – Remove PVC insulation

2 – We twist the metal braid (“screen”) and cut off the foil. As mentioned above, I use an RG-6U cable and it has a rather “liquid” braid (few wire elements), so I twist it. There are cables with a more massive braid, in such cases it is simply moved to cut off the dielectric and expose the copper core. By the way, you don’t have to cut off the foil, sometimes it is left, and there are quite a lot of examples and diagrams on the Internet where the foil remains. But as I understand it, the foil acts as an additional screen that protects the signal from interference (for example, when a TV cable is laid next to a power cable) and does not affect the quality of the connection.

3 – We expose the copper core, carefully removing the insulation (dielectric).

The step-by-step process of preparing a coaxial cable for a TV outlet is shown in the photo below:

The cable is ready, now you can go directly to the outlet itself.

3. Connecting a TV outlet

The Legrand TV socket is shown in the photo below:

Back view:

1. To connect the cable to the socket, you need to unscrew the bolt and open the metal cover:

The plastic housing of the TV socket must be removed before installation because it covers the bolt holes. In some photos below there is a socket in the housing, because... there the goal is to show what and where we connect

2. Then loosen the bolt, which is necessary to fix the inner conductor (copper core)

3. The copper rod of the TV cable must be inserted into the hole on the left, and the wire winding (screen) must be in contact with the body, I wrapped it around the cable insulation (see photo below):

4. Close the lid and tighten both bolts:

5. Now that the socket is connected to the TV cable, install it in the socket and fix it. We tighten the bolts of the socket clamps, as well as the bolts of the socket box:

6. Install the plastic housing of the TV outlet

7. TV socket is ready for use:

Now that the TV socket is installed, you need to prepare a cable to connect it to the TV.

4. Preparing a TV cable to connect the TV to a TV outlet

To do this we need a piece of TV cable and a set of antenna adapters (photo below)

One adapter is needed to connect to a TV socket, and the other to a TV. We measure the required length of cable and cut it. Next we need to prepare both ends of the cable to install the adapters. They are prepared in the same way as preparing a cable for connecting to a TV outlet (the process is shown in the photo below)

Now, using the finished cable, we connect the TV to the TV outlet. The connection process is complete.

Before you begin renovation work in your apartment, you need to plan the design of the future premises. An important aspect of this issue is planning the placement of furniture, interior items, and household appliances. First of all, this is due to the need to optimally route electrical wiring and install it in the right places, including television wiring. To correctly connect a TV outlet, it is enough to know its structure, the general principle of operation and the installation procedure.

Coaxial cable device

The main difference that determines the difference between electrical and television outlets is the structure of the cable connected to each of them. If a standard electrical wire consists of two or three separate conductors covered with insulation, which are connected to the corresponding contacts of the socket using bolted connections, then the design of the antenna cable is somewhat different.

TV coaxial cable is very easy to identify by its appearance. It is a fairly thick round wire, having inside one solid conductive core made of copper. This center conductor is covered with a dense layer of insulation, on top of which is a shield made of aluminum foil and thin steel wire. In most cases, PVC insulation is used as the outer protective covering of the cable.

Poor manufacturing or damage to any element of the antenna wire leads to a significant deterioration in signal quality, so the installation of such lines should be treated with the utmost responsibility.

Let's take a closer look at the design and purpose of the components of a TV cable:

  1. Insulation. It is made of a dielectric (usually polyethylene) and serves to eliminate the galvanic connection between the conductor and the screen.
  2. Screen. In any coaxial cable, this element is designed to prevent high-frequency signals from being radiated into space. Another function is protection against electromagnetic interference, to which the transmitted signal is very sensitive. In addition, two wires are needed to ensure the flow of high frequency current, so in this case the screen is used as the second conductor. Such a cable is called asymmetrically shielded.
  3. Conductive conductor. It is the main part of the structure, since it serves to transmit an electrical signal.
  4. Outer shell, which is designed to protect live parts from mechanical influences.

As can be understood from the design of the cable, connecting it to a television socket involves connecting the central conductor and the screen to the corresponding contacts. To understand the features of connecting such wires, it is necessary to briefly consider the structure and purpose of the main parts of a television outlet.

  • Front panel. This design element of the device performs not only a protective, but also a decorative function. It can be chosen to best suit the interior of the room. Depending on the purpose of the Legrand socket, it may contain additional outputs, for example SAT and R. The TV-R-SAT socket is connected using a single cable coming from a special adder.
  • Caliper. Serves to fasten all elements of the socket design to each other, as well as securely fix the device in the mounting box.

Connecting a TV outlet

To connect such an outlet, you need to follow a simple algorithm:

  1. Prepare and install. To install built-in devices, which are the most common nowadays, you have to drill a hole in the wall for the box. In addition, to lay an antenna cable suitable for such an outlet, you will have to cut a wall. These works are associated with the appearance of a large amount of dust, so they try to coincide with the renovation of the apartment.
  2. Prepare the cable. To do this, it is necessary to remove the protective shell layer approximately 3 cm from its end. Next, you need to carefully remove the central conductor from the insulation at a distance of 1 cm from the edge.
  3. Separate the housing from the front panel and caliper.
  4. Connect the center conductor to the corresponding housing terminal using a screw connection.
  5. Fix the cable screen with a special clamp, ensuring reliable electrical contact.
  6. Attach the board to the support and secure the entire structure in a pre-prepared mounting box.
  7. Install the front part of the TV socket.
  8. Connect the antenna wire coming from the TV to the corresponding socket connector (TV-R-SAT)

It should be noted that there are designs of television sockets, the method of attaching the antenna wire to which may differ slightly. For example, Legrand sockets can use hinged or spring fasteners. In any case, the basic connection principle remains the same.

Connecting a group of television sockets

It has long become normal to have two or more televisions in one apartment, which can receive a signal from a cable television (TV) provider or from a satellite dish (SAT). In order to correctly connect Legrand TV sockets, you can use the following diagram.

The connection diagram for television sockets shown in the figure is called a “star connection” and has a number of advantages:

  • Slight signal attenuation.
  • Since all the wires come out of one place, it is convenient to place the input box in it.
  • There is no need to use an excessive number of pass-through sockets, which has a positive effect on the signal quality.
  • The malfunction of one device does not in any way affect the quality of operation of all the others.

In this diagram, television sockets are connected through a special device called a splitter. It is designed to divide a TV or SAT signal into equal parts, transmitted to individual devices without losing its quality. This is not the only type of splitter used for installing antenna cables. Another common type of these devices is TAP. Their main difference is that the splitter divides the signal into equal parts according to the number of subscribers and can be used as a signal adder. As for the TAP type splitter, it separates some part of the TV (SAT) signal and transmits it to the number of pins provided by the design.

Today on the market you can find terminal, single and pass-through TV sockets. The listed products are characterized not only by name, but also have different designs and purposes. TV socket terminal and pass-through, the difference of which lies in both design and application - these are just some of the types of TV sockets that are available today.

Out of ignorance, some people do not use them quite correctly. Because of this, a negative attitude towards such electrical outlets is formed and grows. dissatisfaction with the quality of the TV signal. However, correct installation of the right type of socket is quite capable of correcting this situation. Therefore, in order not to become a victim of ignorance in the same way, we will talk in more detail about the types of TV sockets, and also determine the purpose for which each of them is designed and what it is needed for.

Types and patterns of use

In order to fully understand the specifics of installing TV sockets, as well as to understand where and what type is used, how to connect a TV socket, you need to consider not only their design features, but also the connection diagrams. Because to lay out the coverage of a television signal, based on its frequency, various methods and connection diagrams are used.

Structure of different TV sockets

Let's start with the differences that TV outlets have. It is conditioned various fields of application, which we will talk about below.

Let's start with the simplest TV socket - a single one. This outlet is simply a contact connection that makes it possible to connect the TV antenna cable to the network. According to the instructions of the manufacturing plants, the degree of signal drop in them does not exceed 1 - 2 dB, which is determined only by the transition resistances of the contact junctions.

The terminal socket in this matter is much more complicated. In addition to the direct contact connection, it also contains a special circuit that is designed to “quench” the reflected signal.

Description of the scheme

The bottom line is that each TV not only picks up the television signal, but also returns part of it to the network. The part that it returns is usually called the reflected signal. Compared to the main one, the power of the reflected signal is not so high, but together with several TVs this can cause significant interference.

Reflected signal may be seen on some other TV as an overlay or as interference. And in order to avoid this effect, a special circuit is used to suppress the reflected signal.

As a result, the terminal socket, with the exception of losses of 1 - 2 dB, which are caused by switching resistances, also suffers losses from 8 to 15 dB, which also cause the specified filter to work.

Be careful! GOST 28324–89 clearly states that the signal frequency should be 57 - 83 dB. Increasing, and even more so decreasing, the signal power can lead to interference and a decrease in proper image quality. As a result, it turns out that even the presence of one terminal socket significantly reduces the signal level.

But the device of the pass-through socket is even more complex. In addition to the filter and the direct contact connection, it contains another contact connection for connecting other TV sockets. As a result of the decrease, the signal level at such an outlet can reach about 15 - 20 dB.

At the end of such a scheme A terminal socket must be installed. It differs from a checkpoint, as we have already found out, only in the presence of only one entrance. And its filter is entirely controlled by the reflected signal.

The main disadvantage of this connection method is the gradual deterioration of the signal in each subsequent outlet. At the same time, the cost of implementing such a scheme is significantly lower due to the absence of the need to purchase an antenna socket - splitter.

Quite often and effectively the so-called hybrid or mixed scheme. Its essence lies in connecting some of the sockets according to a through circuit, and others according to a “star” circuit. This makes it possible to save money by significantly removing devices for connection from the splitter.

Connection algorithm

The question of how and in what cases a pass-through socket should be used has been considered in detail; now we can move on to the task of connecting it. It is quite possible to perform this procedure yourself, and this does not require special tools or skills.

Be careful! Install TV cable simultaneously with power cables is prohibited. Since damage to the power wiring can lead to high voltage on the television cable. And this will again lead to malfunction of all TVs. Moreover, the power cable may also interfere with the broadcast.

Now let's proceed directly to connecting the TV outlet.

Having completed all these steps, you can begin connecting the next outlet.

It should also be mentioned that numerous manufacturers, in an effort to speed up and facilitate the installation process, used all kinds of hinged locks and spring clips. But still, the installation process has not really changed due to innovations. The only thing they were able to eliminate was the need to use a screwdriver.

As you can see, the process of installing terminal, pass-through or single TV sockets is not so labor-intensive. In this matter, the main condition is to choose the right the socket itself and its connection diagram. We hope that our article has oriented the reader on this issue, and now anyone can easily select and connect exactly the TV outlet that suits a specific circuit.
