The desktop does not display shortcuts. Incorrect display of icons: solution

Hello dear visitors. Today I came across a not very pleasant problem and decided to share the solution with you. I'll tell you what to do if shortcut icons on the desktop and in folders in the operating room no longer appear Windows system 7. I usually store on my desktop only shortcuts for those programs that I use very often; fortunately, there are not very many of them. I keep all other shortcuts in a folder on my desktop.

Today I go to this folder, and there instead of beautiful program icons (icons) are displayed standard icons and everyone is the same. Like this:

But on the desktop all shortcuts were displayed normally. For you it may be the other way around. I immediately checked whether the programs whose shortcuts had lost their beautiful appearance were working. The programs started, which means you need to clear the cache of shortcut icons.

It helped me, I think the method I will write about below will also help you.

Shortcut icons no longer appear?

We will need to run several commands, for this we need to run command line. Go to Start, then “All Programs”, “Accessories” and launch the “Command Line” utility. Better press it right click mouse and select “Run as administrator”.

A window will open in which we enter the commands one by one. Enter one command and press “Enter”. For convenience, you can copy the commands and paste them into the command line.

1. Close the process explorer with the command taskkill /im explorer.exe /f

2.cd %userprofile%appdatalocal

3. attrib -h IconCache.db

4.del IconCache.db

5. Launch the explorer with the command explorer

You can now restart your computer. But even without a reboot, all the shortcuts began to appear as usual, that is, all the shortcut icons appeared. Good luck!

The desktop has disappeared: shortcuts and the taskbar from the Start menu do not appear.

What to do if shortcuts and the taskbar from the “START” menu disappeared from the desktop...

The article is applicable for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7.

Requirements.
To perform the actions specified in this article, you must have local administrator rights on the computer. The article is applicable for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7.

Information.
If the desktop does not appear when the computer boots, i.e. in place of the usual shortcuts and taskbar, only the background picture, then most likely your computer was attacked by viruses (unless, of course, you yourself broke something).

Desktop recovery.

Attention!

Before performing the steps listed in this article, check your computer for viruses. Otherwise, you will correct errors, and after a reboot the viruses will again do everything as they need.

Method No. 1.
Let's start with the simplest. You need to check the option that disables the display of icons on the desktop:

Windows 2000.

2. In the menu that opens, select \”Active Desktop”\;

Windows XP.
1. Right-click on the desktop;
2. In the menu that opens, select the item \"Arrange icons"\;
3. In the expanded submenu, next to the item \"Display desktop icons\" there should be a checkmark. If there is no checkmark, then click on this item.

Windows Vista.
1. Right-click on the desktop;
2. In the menu that opens, select \”View”\;
3. In the expanded submenu, next to the item \"Display desktop icons\" there should be a checkmark. If there is no checkmark, then click on this item.

Note. The result will not appear immediately, but with a delay of 3 - 10 seconds, it all depends on the performance of the computer and its clutter.

Method No. 2.
If method No. 1 did not help, then we try to start the explorer.exe process manually. One of its tasks is to display the desktop:
1. On the keyboard, press and hold the \"Ctrl" \and \"Alt"\ buttons, and then press the \"Delete\" button;
2. In the “Dispatcher” window Windows tasks\”, go to the \”Applications\” tab;
3. On this tab, click the \"New task"\ button;
4. In the “Create” window new task”\ in the \”Open”\ field, type the command explorer.exe and click \”OK”\;
5. Restart your computer;

Method No. 3 - For Windows XP/Vista only.
If method No. 2 gives an error that the explorer.exe file was not found or the problem remains after a reboot, then you should try to perform a system restore:
1. In the \"Start"\ menu, open sequentially:
\"Programs"\ » \"Standard"\ » \"Service"\

2. In the \"Service"\ menu, click on the item \"System Restore"\;

Note. If there is no such item, then follow these steps:
- From the \"Start"\ menu, select \"Run"\;
- In the open field, type the command %SystemRoot%\\system32\\restore\\rstrui.exe
- click the \"OK"\ button;

3. In the \"System Restore"\ window on the right side of the window, select \"Recovery more early state computer”\ and press the button \"Further"\;
4. In the calendar, select the day in which there is a checkpoint, such days are highlighted in bold;

Note. Choose a day on which your computer worked normally, i.e. if you remember that three days ago the computer started normally, then select a point that was three days ago. If control points no, then most likely you have disabled the option to create control points and you will have to go to method No. 4.
At the same time, read the article \"Enabling and disabling system recovery in Windows XP"\.

Method No. 4.
If system restore does not help, then you will have to go into the system registry:
1. On the keyboard, press and hold the buttons \"Ctrl"\ And \"Alt"\ and then click the button \"Delete"\;
2. In the \"Windows Task Manager\" window, go to the tab \"Applications"\;
3. On this tab, click the button \"New task..."\;
4. In the \"Create a new task\" window in the \"Open"\ field, enter the command regedit and press the button \"OK"\;
5. In the \"Registry Editor\" window on the left side, sequentially expand the registry keys to the section \”Image File Execution Options”\:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/Image File Execution Options/

6. Expand the \"Image File Execution Options\" section and look for the \"explorer.exe"\ and \"iexplorer.exe"\ subsections;

If any of the subsections are found, then it must be deleted.

7. Right-click on the subsection and in the menu that opens, select the item \"Delete"\;
8. When asked to confirm deletion, press the button \"Yes"\;
9. Now let’s check the launch parameters explorer.exe, to do this, expand the registry keys to the section \"Winlogon"\:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/

10. Left-click on the section \"Winlogon"\ and in the right part of the registry editor window we find the parameter \"Shell"\;
11. Right-click on this parameter and select the menu item \"Change"\;
12. In the \"Change string parameter"\ window, the value should be written explorer.exe and nothing more, if it is not so, then correct it;
13. Press the button \"OK"\, close all windows and restart your computer;

Icons have disappeared from the desktop. Solution

Recently, one of the regular readers of the website Your World of PC wrote me a letter asking me to publish an article about solving the problem with missing icons on the desktop. At first I thought that the user’s computer was simply infected with a virus and in order to fix this problem, I recommended that he check his computer for viruses.

In response to this, I learned that the user regularly scans his computer using the popular Kaspersky antivirus and what’s most interesting is that there are no viruses on his computer, and besides, the computer itself works just fine. According to him, the taskbar, all tray icons and the clock were displayed. Using the Start button, you could go to My Computer, Control Panel, etc. That is, at first glance, the system is absolutely working, there are no signs of infection, everything works fine, but the icons on the desktop are not displayed. But still I managed to find a solution to this problem. Want to know how to solve it? Read on!

Enable the display of missing icons on the desktop

After a few minutes of thinking, I remembered one small feature of the desktop context menu. The fact is that it has a special item that is responsible for displaying desktop icons. To get to it, you need to do the following:

1. On the desktop, right-click to open the context menu. In the menu that appears, look for the item “Arrange icons”, go and in the drop-down list we find the item: Display desktop icons:

2. We mark this item with a bird by simply clicking on it. All. After this, all shortcuts and folders should appear on the desktop:

In our case this method worked. For some reason, the person who wrote me the letter had their icons disabled. After enabling this setting, all icons and folders appeared in full.

Desktop icons are not displayed. Another way to solve the problem

If the method I described above did not help you, then most likely the problem is a system failure or a virus that has infected your computer. In this case, the first thing you need to do is check the system local disk using an antivirus program and, if malware is detected, perform disinfection and cleaning. If after checking and restarting the computer the picture has not changed, then we try the following steps:

1. Call the task manager using the key combination CTRL+ALT+DELETE. In the top menu we find the “File” item and in the drop-down menu select the New task item (Run…):

2. After that, in the “Create a new task” window that appears, write explorer and press Enter. These actions will restart the explorer.exe process and all missing shortcuts and folders will appear on the desktop.

But, unfortunately, there is one caveat to this method!

The thing is that with this method we start the frozen process manually and it is possible that the next time the operating system is loaded, the icons will again not be displayed on the desktop and you will have to start this process manually again. To fix this problem, use the article:

Using System Restore

If after using the two previous methods you still have not achieved results, then I can advise you three more methods.

First, try restoring your system settings using the AVZ antivirus utility. To do this, you need to download the utility and follow the steps that I described in the article about restoring the explorer.exe process (I gave a link to the article above)

Secondly, try cleaning windows registry using CCleaner program.

Third, perform a system restore using the built-in Windows capabilities (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore).

In some cases, file and folder icons are not displayed correctly due to incorrect setting, in others - due to an outdated cache. Let's look at some possible solutions.

Show thumbnails instead of icons

To display thumbnails as thumbnails for video files and pictures, follow these steps:

2. On the tab View uncheck the box.

3. Click OK.

4. Open Control Panel (View: Large Icons) > System.

5. In the left menu, click Extra options systems.

6. On the tab Additionally In chapter Performance click the button Options.

7. In the window that opens, on the tab Visual effects check the box.

8. Click OK.

Resetting the icon cache

When a user opens a folder, Windows 7 caches the icons of all files, folders, and shortcuts stored in it (to increase speed). Sometimes, when icons and folder contents are changed, the cache does not have time to reset and the appearance of the icons does not change even after pressing the F5 button. In such cases, you can manually reset the cache:

2. On the tab View In chapter Hidden files and folders install Show hidden files, folders and drives.

3. Click OK.

4. Paste into address bar Windows Explorer 7 address:

%userprofile%\AppData\Local

and press Enter.

5. In the folder that opens, delete hidden file.

6. Restart your computer.

After execution reboot Windows 7 will rebuild the cache and create new file IconCache.db, after which the icons will be displayed correctly.

Note. For each account The cache needs to be rebuilt separately.
