Scrivener

Scrivener- professional solution for writers, screenwriters, journalists, etc. The program is compatible not only with iOS and Mac OS, but also with Windows and even Linux... I must say that mine training program itself is a little free, that’s why I chose such an unusual method of recording lectures. My classmates reacted differently to my approach to studying, but after a week of steadily recording texts on my iPad, no one paid attention to me the way they did in the first days. After another week, the teachers also stopped looking at me with wide eyes. And all because, lazily leaning on one hand, I managed to record the texts with one finger of the other hand faster than the rest of my classmates did with a pen in a notebook. And indeed it is. What can we say about when I, being extremely focused, typed texts faster than the teacher had time to repeat them. In addition to the main function of typing, the iPad has come to the rescue more than once when it was necessary to find this or that table on the Internet or show an example of a part or machine. Often the teachers did not have such information, so sometimes I acted as a kind of assistant. Some of the teachers even appreciated this “thing” and its practical usefulness. As one of the teachers said, “it would be very useful if all cadets had “this.”

As I attended classes, I used each of these apps to varying degrees, some more, some less. Convenience and the already created attachment to some of them affected. However, I will try to convey to you as accurately as possible all the facts about each of these applications, telling you about all the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

I would like to immediately note that I considered each application primarily from the point of view of usefulness to the student, as the main user of this device. For creating simple notes, this kind of application is not suitable. There are more adapted applications for this. All the programs I describe in the following are perfect for anyone who takes notes on large texts on their tablet. This can range from large lecture materials to the creation of abstracts and other work with large and small texts.

I chose six apps to create this review series. These are iWriter, iA Writer, Omm Writer, Enso Writer, WriteRoom and Daedalus Touch. Each of these applications is unique in its own way. Each one is valuable to me not only as an icon in electronic device, but also as a product of the activities of talented developers, each of whom invested not only their mind and abilities, but also their soul into the creation of their application. Such thoughts came to me as I used almost each of these applications.

Even before the time came to start writing reviews, I could not distribute the order of publication of reviews between applications, taking turns giving leadership to one or another program, changing their location. Therefore, I decided not to bother and, having previously arranged them in a folder called Writers by color from lighter to darker, I distributed the applications in the list for review in the same way.

I want to start with iWriter. In addition to the fact that the icon for this application turned out to be the lightest, another factor influencing its placement in the queue was the authorship Russian developers.

The app is as simple as it should be. While using iWriter, I did not find a single icon or menu item that bothered me or was not needed at all. All interface elements are implemented very thoughtfully and occupy the place where they should be.

All your documents will be located within walking distance. All you need to see them is to touch the very first icon. As you use the application, folders with content stored in them will accumulate here. text documents. Creating a folder, just like creating a separate document, does not require any special skills from you. To create a document, you just need to touch the button with the plus sign. If you need to create a folder to combine several documents, then first tap “Edit” and after that create a folder using the “New Folder” button. I expressed myself a little incorrectly a little higher when describing the process of creating a folder. There is one feature here that will not allow you to move documents already created outside of folders to any folders. This option is not provided by default. This is a minus. Because when, during the second lesson on the same subject, I launched iWriter for the second time to record a lecture in it, I realized that I needed to combine the document I had already created earlier and this document into a folder. It turned out to be not so simple. I had to create new folder and there is already a separate document in it, into which I had to copy the contents of the document created in the last lecture. Simply put, you cannot move documents between folders.

Each application of this nature must provide native support several fonts. iWriter was no exception to the rule and successfully demonstrated the ability to work with five different fonts. This, if you notice, is the second of five application control icons. In addition to choosing fonts, it provides the ability to adjust the font size. The implementation is similar to that in iBooks. There is also a button for automatically setting the font size. To be honest, I didn’t quite understand how this automation works, but leaving the switch in the “On” position meant working with the maximum text size. Feel the difference between text size at maximum and minimum values.

Among other things, the program is equipped with a night mode and allows you to work with text in low light or in the absence of light at all.

Another problem I encountered as I used iWriter was the inability to capture document and folder names longer than 25 characters. That is, if the item is called “Machines for road repair and construction,” I had to call the folder MRiSD and nothing else. Since this was the fourth year and many new subjects appeared in the program, the names of which were not possible to remember the first time, reducing them in folders with text material was simply unacceptable. If I had continued to use the program, I would never have been able to remember the names of the subjects, much less the names of the teachers. The same applies to the names of individual documents. In this case, there was a way out, but it looked somewhat imperfect. I named the documents according to the order of lectures, that is, “Lecture 4”, “Lecture 5”, in order to at least somehow separate them in a folder with the name of the subject, and wrote the topic and title of the lecture directly in the document itself. In any case, such a limitation of capabilities cannot be attributed to the advantages of the program.

As for the possibilities of distributing the text you created, everything here is also at the level the required minimum. The fourth and final menu icon prompts you to send a text open document by mail or simply copy it to the clipboard without having to go through the trouble of selecting the text and copying it. The other one, in my opinion, is the most an important part The functionality of the program, which, by the way, will be equipped with almost all applications from this series, is the ability to link to Dropbox. By giving the app your Dropbox account login credentials, you allow it to upload all the documents you create to the cloud and, if your computer and all your portable devices are also tied to Dropbox, you provide yourself with access to documents from anywhere in the world. Great solution in case you need to work on the computer on the texts you have created, study them and, possibly, edit them without the need to transfer them to the computer. All documents will already be located in the corresponding folder in Dropbox.

When creating the application, the developers relied not on simplifying the organization of documents in folders, but primarily on working with text. I must say that iWriter has no equal here. And that's why:

This symbol menu makes working with text much easier. The application noticeably speeds up typing speed by placing basic punctuation marks on an additional line. As you know standard keyboard requires the user to switch to a keyboard with symbols to represent periods, commas, quotation marks, and other, even less commonly used, symbols. But when it comes to simple typing, what do you need other than a period, a comma, an apostrophe, a colon, quotation marks and parentheses? These are the main punctuation marks most often used in Russian and English languages. On both sides of the additional line with symbols there are navigation buttons. With their help, you can quickly move between characters and words, without using standard methods offered by iOS. Note that different situations require the use of different methods of navigation between words and letters in words. In some places it will be more convenient to use the usual finger selection, in others it will be easier to touch the screen two or three times, thereby switching to necessary word or symbol. In addition, the program provides a slightly different navigation between words and symbols - well known to everyone iOS users swipe. I must say that this method is not as convenient as a simple touch the desired button. To move the cursor one character you just need to swipe your finger in the desired direction. To move the cursor to the next word, swipe in the same way, but with two fingers in the desired direction and the cursor will move.

I can’t help but mention the ability of the application to work in full screen mode. You can activate the mode by touching the icon on the right top corner. In addition, the program works equally well in both landscape and portrait mode, providing the same full access to each of the menu buttons. I note that in portrait mode the area of ​​visible text increases noticeably, which is a big advantage when working with text and navigating through it.

You may have noticed that the program provides some statistics about each of the documents. The numbers are located at the top of the screen and indicate the total number of words in the document and the estimated time to read the document. For the sake of the experiment, I timed it and every time, no matter what document I read, my results were noticeably inferior to those indicated in the program. I read a text of 300 words in 1 minute 25 seconds, but the program indicated the time was 1:02. Moreover, such results were obtained for both the English text and the text in Russian. I don’t know how the calculation was done, but I don’t think it could have any serious impact on the app’s rating.
