Fixed

A few days ago, Huawei launched its new smartphone in the budget market. It is called Huawei Y9 2018. Its main feature is the design because the smartphone is very similar to flagship devices such as Huawei Mate 10 and Honor 9 Lite. Additionally, it comes with an 18:9 display, quad cameras (dual front and dual rear), good performance, and a big battery. Huawei Y9 2018 has every chance of becoming a bestseller in the budget segment, especially in Europe and the USA, where the Huawei brand is very popular.

As you know, Xiaomi is the king in the budget market. The Chinese company has already released some very interesting phones at the beginning of 2018. In my opinion, Redmi Note 5 Pro is the best competitor to Huawei Y9 2018. So, I decided to compare these phones and find out which one is better to buy in 2018.

Where can I buy?

Design

I want to start with the design because that's one of the main differences between these phones. As I said, Huawei Y9 2018 looks very similar to Mate 10 and Honor 9 Lite. Huawei knows how to make good and stylish smartphones.

While the front panel of Redmi Note 5 Pro and Huawei Y9 2018 is almost identical except for the Huawei logo, the rear panel has some differences. First of all, Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a vertical dual camera setup just like the iPhone X. To be honest, I don't really like it and Huawei's horizontal dual rear camera design looks better to me. Both smartphones also have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Budget smartphones from Huawei and Xiaomi have microUSB ports and 3.5 mm audio jacks.

Also, I should note that the Huawei Y9 2018 is a more compact smartphone because it has a slightly smaller display. So, I will give the first winning score to the Huawei device because I like it better.

Display

The display is another interesting feature. Huawei Y9 2018 and Redmi Note 5 Pro come with very similar screens. They both have an 18:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution, 2160 by 1080 pixels.

However, the Huawei smartphone has a diagonal of 5.93 inches, while the Xiaomi device has a 5.99-inch display. I'm sure both phones have high quality displays and the difference in diagonal is not very noticeable. In this case there are no winners, and both phones receive one point from me.

Performance

Hardware is very important for budget smartphones as it provides good performance while gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies and more.

Huawei Y9 2018 is equipped with a processor from Huawei called Kirin 659. In addition, it has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. The storage can be expanded using a microSD card. The AnTuTu test shows around 75,000 points, which is pretty good for a budget phone.

As for the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. You can also find a version with 6GB RAM. It is also possible to expand the internal memory using a MicroSD card. Snapdragon processors are very good and they provide high performance and power efficiency. Redmi Note 5 Pro scores around 110,000 points in AnTuTu.

By the way, Huawei Y9 2018 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box with EMUI 8.0 user interface. Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 user interface. Both the interfaces are highly customized and both offer different features and functionality. I cannot choose for you which interface is better, each user chooses according to his own taste.

As you can see, the Xiaomi smartphone has a more powerful processor, more RAM and internal memory. If you are looking for a gaming phone, then the Redmi Note 5 Pro should be a better option.

Camera

The next thing I want to talk about is the camera. Xiaomi and Huawei offer really good cameras on their smartphones, not only flagships, but also budget ones.

Huawei Y9 2018 comes with four cameras: dual front and dual rear. Let's start with the main camera. On the back, you can find a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. They have an aperture of f/2.2 and f/2.6 respectively. As for the front camera, there is a 16-megapixel main sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. To be honest, I don't believe that the 2MP sensor on the back and front will take much better photos. The manufacturer says that they are necessary for pictures with the bokeh effect.

As for the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it comes with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor on the back. They have an aperture of f/2.2 and f/2.0 respectively. In addition, the smartphone has a 20-megapixel front camera. This sounds very interesting!

It's very difficult to pick a winner because both phones rely on front-facing cameras. However, I will give my preference to the Redmi Note 5 Pro because I have already tested many budget Xiaomi phones and they take really good photos.

Battery

In terms of battery, both phones seem to be identical. They have 4000 mAh batteries with fast charging function. I think Redmi Note 5 Pro and Huawei Y9 2018 have similar battery life, up to 2 days on a single charge, while the battery takes around 2 hours to fully charge.

Price

And the last category for our comparison is price. Right now, you can buy the Redmi Note 5 Pro with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage for around $220. At the moment, the official price of Huawei Y9 2018 is unknown, since the smartphone was announced only yesterday. However, I think it will cost less than $250.

Both smartphones are in the same price range, and the actual price may vary due to coupons, sales and other discounts.

Conclusion

As you can see, Huawei Y9 2018 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro are very similar. They have almost identical displays, batteries and cameras. However, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is slightly more powerful than the Huawei device. In addition, I want to note the premium design of Huawei Y9 2018. It looks stylish and expensive, just like the flagship device Huawei Mate 10.

The Chinese company Huawei has long been entrenched in the mobile phone market. It is constantly among the top five most popular brands for the production of smartphones and tablets all over the world, second only to such giants as Samsung, Apple and others.

Huawei devices attract the attention of consumers not only with their interesting design and good characteristics, but also with their prices. Today, she has gadgets in stock for any price segment, including budget models that are increasingly gaining popularity and becoming relevant.

I would like to talk about just one of these models today - this is the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone. Reviews, current prices and much more will be in today’s review dedicated to this phone. Well, let's get started.

Review

Before starting the review of the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone, I would like to briefly tell you what exactly will be reviewed. First of all, we will get acquainted with the equipment of the device, its appearance, design and ergonomics. Then we'll take a closer look at the display, specifications, operating system and performance. The article will conclude with an introduction to multimedia functions, camera, battery life and reviews of the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone.

Equipment

So, the phone comes in a small rectangular box of bright orange color. On the front there is only the name of the manufacturer and model, but on the back the main characteristics of the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone are already listed: GB of internal memory, 2 GB of RAM, 5-inch screen, 3000 mAh battery, 4G support, etc. We will get acquainted with the device specifications in more detail in a separate section of the article.

Inside the box itself you can find the following: Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone, instructions, warranty card, charger unit, micro-USB cable, headphones and a protective film for the phone screen. Overall, a pretty good package for a budget device.

Of course, I would like to get some kind of silicone case in addition, but even without it everything is just fine.

Appearance

The appearance of the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone is chic, even despite the plastic body. By the way, the plastic used here is of very high quality and pleasant to the touch. Only the frame is made of metal, which emphasizes the stylish appearance. The 2016 model had no metal elements at all.

On the back of the smartphone is the Huawei logo and the camera lens, which has a metal edge and protrudes slightly from the body. Next to the camera there is a double LED flash and a microphone hole that records sound when shooting video.

The corners and edges of the device are rounded, making it comfortable and pleasant to hold in your hand. I would also like to note the corrugated structure of the back cover of the phone, which looks just great.

On the right side, traditionally, there are volume keys and a power/lock button.

The company's proprietary "smart" button - "Easy key" - is located alone on the left side. You can manage it through the settings menu. For example, you can set that after pressing a button, a screenshot or something else will be taken.

Looking at the front panel of the device, it becomes a little sad. The large side frames around the five-inch display are very disappointing. There are also no touch control buttons; they are displayed on the screen, taking up some useful space.

At the top of the screen you can see the earpiece hole, light and proximity sensors, a 5 MP front camera and an LED flash so that selfies can be taken anywhere and at any time of the day.

At the top end of the phone there is only a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the bottom edge there are a pair of speakers on the sides and a micro-USB connector in the middle.

As for the build quality, Huawei smartphones usually have no problems with this. Even though the Y5 is a budget model, it is built with high quality. All parts fit closely together, there are no creaks, pressing or crunching noises here.

Screen

The Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone has a 5-inch display. The matrix is made using IPS technology, resolution 1280x720, pixel density per inch is 294 ppi, which is generally standard.

There are some minor comments regarding the quality of color rendering. The gamma is clearly slightly shifted towards cool shades. You can correct the situation using the “Color temperature” item in the settings menu. If we talk about clarity, it is at its best here. Text, small details in photos, pictures - everything is visible very well.

The viewing angles are not bad, but there is a problem with many IPS matrices - when deviated in one direction, the screen turns yellow, in the other it turns violet. You can tell from the display that it clearly lacks good factory calibration.

In multi-touch mode, the display simultaneously recognizes up to 5 touches.

Characteristics

The technical characteristics of the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone are as follows:

  • Processor - with a frequency of 1400 MHz.
  • Graphic video accelerator - Mali-T720 MP2.
  • The amount of RAM is 2 GB.
  • Built-in memory capacity - 16 GB + support for memory cards up to 128 GB.
  • Camera - 8 MP, autofocus, dual LED flash.
  • Front camera - 5 MP, LED flash.
  • Screen - 5 inches, IPS, 1280x720, 294 ppi.
  • Number of SIM cards - 2.
  • - nano + micro.
  • Battery - 3000 mAh.
  • Additionally - light sensor, proximity sensor, compass, voice dialing.

Overall, quite good, for a budget model. Particularly pleasing is the possibility of expanding the internal memory using a separate slot for microSD.

Connection

If we talk about connection quality, the phone handles the network quite confidently. The volume of the external speaker is good, the interlocutor can be heard well, the voice is not distorted. As for support for wireless technologies, the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone has 4G and 3G. GSM standards are fully supported: 900/1800/1900. Bluetooth in the device is version 4.0.

operating system

In the box, the smartphone comes with the Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) operating system. The shell uses the proprietary Emotion UI 4.1. The likelihood that this device will receive version of Android 7.0 is very small, but it is still a budget option.

As for the interface itself, the outer shell is quite pleasant and convenient to use. Optimization also does not fail. Flipping, opening and various transitions occur smoothly, without jerking. There was also no noticeable slowdown.

Performance

The processor in the Huawei Y5 2017 smartphone is not branded Kirin, but from MediaTek, version MT6737T. I don’t want to say anything special about this “pebble”, because it is installed in almost every third device from other manufacturers. The processor operates at a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz, which is more than enough for the budget segment.

The video accelerator is also not some cool Adreno, but a Mali-T720 MP2. Its performance is quite good and allows you to play most mobile games without much difficulty, including such as Asphalt, NFS, WoT.

In Antutu, the phone scored 40754 points, which is quite good considering its class. This figure is noticeably superior to the 2017 model from Samsung - Galaxy J3. And if you also compare the prices of both devices, then Huawei clearly has the advantage.

Several games were launched for the graphics test: Riptide 2, Asphalt 7/8, Modern Combat 5, Real Racing 3, Inhustice 2. The result was pleasantly surprising. In some games, the graphics settings were set to maximum - no drops in fps were noticed. However, for a comfortable game of the same Injustice 2, NFS, Asphalt 8, the settings still had to be lowered.

Camera

Huawei Y5 2017 has two cameras - an 8 MP main camera and a 5 MP front camera. The quality of the pictures, as for a budget employee, is very good. White balance is set correctly in most cases, but focusing and exposure are often missed.

As for the front camera, everything is perfect here. Sharpness is good, white balance, exposure - everything is on point. The photos come out high quality. Perfect for selfies and blogging.

The smartphone can record video in Full HD 1920x1080 30 fps. The sound is recorded in stereo, which is good news. The quality is not perfect, but at a high level.

The camera's settings are rich and can take a long time to figure out, so we won't consider them.

Autonomy

The smartphone's battery life is excellent. With more or less intensive use, the phone easily survives until the evening. If you limit yourself to only calls, SMS, a couple of hours of surfing and online video, then the charge will remain until the next day.

Prices

Huawei smartphones have always been distinguished by their slightly inflated price compared to other manufacturers. This model was no exception, although if you look at the characteristics of the device, its performance and capabilities, the price tag is quite justified.

Today, the Huawei Y5 2017 Gold or White smartphone can be bought for 6700 - this is the lowest price. For comparison, the same Galaxy J3 (2017) starts at 10 thousand.

New Huawei Y9 (2018): all the characteristics of a smartphone that painfully resembles either the Mate 10 Lite or the Honor 7X. Can you find five differences?

On March 12, Huawei introduced another phone that fits perfectly into the marketers’ concept of cloning and rebranding previous models. We take a smartphone that was released a few months ago, change a couple of details, for example, the resolution of one of the sensors of the main or front camera, and launch a new product on the market that will attract the attention of the audience.

In the Huawei Y9 (2018) smartphone, the characteristics are almost identical to those of the Huawei Mate 10 Lite. They decided not to change the resolution of the cameras, and their number remained the same. The new product for the middle segment of the market has the same number of lenses as its predecessor - four. The display diagonal has changed little - by some 0.3 inches, the classic resolution is FullHD+, the aspect ratio is multimedia. In short, almost everything is the same as in the Mate 10 Lite.

It should be said that the Huawei Y9 (2018) begs comparison not only with the Mate 10 Lite, but with another new product presented just three months ago. It's about. There is also a dual camera on the back, a large multimedia screen, Kirin 659 and other family features inherent in this “line” of cloned phones. But today we will not compare “different” (relatively different) models of the popular Chinese brand with each other. We will devote a separate publication to this with tables and diagrams.

Today we are only talking about the characteristics of Huawei Y9 (2018). Very short and to the point. Go.

Huawei Y9: screen characteristics

Huawei Y9 (2018) is made in a modern form factor with 18:9 aspect ratio. The screen is large - the absolute area is 90.7 square meters. cm, relative (compared to the area of the front panel) about 77%. The screen resolution, as expected, is FullHD+, that is, 1080 x 2160 pixels. When diagonal 5.93 inches, such a resolution gives a pixel density of 407 ppi. The matrix, of course, is IPS LCD. The screen is covered with 2.5D glass, the degree of scratch resistance of which has not yet been reported.

Huawei Y9: hardware specifications

The first publications about Huawei Y9 (2018) are full of headlines that this phone is “the real killer of Xiaomi RN 5 Pro.” It is difficult to understand what illiterate copywriters or authors are guided by, apparently due to the similarity of the form factor and battery capacity.

The battery of Huawei Y9 (2018) is really fine - 4000 mAh. Fast charging is supported, but there is no information yet on the specifications of the charger that comes with the phone and the actual battery recharging speed.

The main disadvantage of the Kirin 659 chipset is the graphics adapter Mali-T830 MP2. This adapter is noticeably inferior to any Adreno 5xx. Considering that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has a new Snapdragon 636 processor with new Adreno 509 graphics, the Huawei Y9 (2018) smartphone will be behind its direct competitor in all benchmarks, and it will lose a lot.

And to finish the conversation about the hardware, let’s add that so far only one memory configuration of Huawei Y9 (2018) is known - with 3 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of internal memory. Perhaps a 4/64 GB version will appear later. There is an expansion slot for a microSD card, but it is a hybrid one.

Huawei Y9: camera specifications

In the Huawei Y9 (2018), the camera characteristics are exactly the same as e. There is a double module on the back cover. The main lens of this module has a resolution of 16 megapixels, an aperture ratio of 2.2, and an equivalent focal length of 27mm. Automatic focusing is implemented using phase technology (). The second rear camera sensor has a resolution of 2 MP. It is needed exclusively for frame depth and post-processing of images, for example, to simulate the effect of a variable aperture.

The front camera is also dual. The auxiliary module is represented by the same 2 MP sensor, and the main one has a resolution of 13 MP, an f/2.0 aperture and a focal length of 26mm. The Huawei Y9 smartphone can only shoot video with a resolution of 1080p and a frequency of 30 frames per second - these are the maximum capabilities of the Kirin 659 chipset.

Interfaces, software, design

Huawei Y9 is made in a metal (aluminum) case. The fingerprint scanner was placed at the back on the central axis, the cameras were screwed in the upper left corner. There is a 3.5 mm audio jack. Charging is connected via microUSB. 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks are not supported.

Out of the box, the user receives Android 8 complete with proprietary EMUI 8 firmware. The operating system, along with battery capacity, is the main difference between Huawei Y9 and Mate 10 Lite. The phone will be presented in three colors: blue, black and gold.

There is no official information yet regarding the price of Huawei Y9 2018, however, it is expected to cost around 250 euros. Considering that this is the brand’s most budget-friendly smartphone, albeit the most sophisticated one in its subclass, the price can be called high.

Over the course of the week, I conducted a survey of owners of various smartphones, including Huawei U9, and based on their answers, I will write a review about it.

What Huawei y9 owners like:

First of all, of course, the price, all owners of Huawei U9 are glad that for such a price they purchased such a high-quality smartphone, without glitches and problems.
Also, almost all users noted the metal body of the smartphone with a matte finish, thanks to which the appearance does not deteriorate due to fingerprints.
And of course, there are dual cameras on the front and back, which allow you to take high-quality pictures even in poor lighting. And selfie lovers praised the photo quality of the front camera. In general, Huawei smartphone manufacturers rely on cameras, because... For many buyers, photo and video quality is a priority when choosing a mobile phone. And even such a middle-class smartphone has a quite advanced camera built in. Respect to the developers.
Several owners praised the sound of the headphones, the lack of extraneous noise, and the ability to customize the equalizer to their liking. The same applies to the quality of communication; when talking on the phone, the interlocutor can be heard very well.
Those who like to block access to their personal device from unauthorized persons noted the excellent performance of the fingerprint scanner, as well as the face unlock function, which works without problems even if the owner wears glasses. In complete darkness, this function does not work very effectively, but I think a light image on the screensaver will be a good solution to this shortcoming.
There were no negative comments about the battery life either; everyone is happy; with active use, the battery lasts about 40 hours.
I almost forgot, representatives of the fair sex, every single one, noted the beautiful design of the smartphone. The large display and beautiful appearance attracts the attention of girls. Huawei Y9 is sold in 3 colors: black, blue and gold.
