In general, I quarreled with my wife. According to him, she did not wash his “running” shorts in a timely manner, so he went for a jog in a nearby park wearing sweatpants with “bad” pockets. One day from one of them a brand new iPhone 6s dropped.

Despite some kind of protective case and tempered glass on the screen, the smartphone “did not survive” - a broken display, a dented body and a cracked camera.

We will not judge who is right and who is wrong. Let’s also skip thoughts about sports cases for the hand. We have already discussed all these points over a couple of glasses of dark wine. It turned out to be an excellent reason to meet an old friend, but in the case of this article this is not the most important thing.

What did you decide to do?

The main advice is not to rush. I understand perfectly well that today it’s difficult to live without a phone even for one day, but there’s no need to give it away for repair to an unknown location.

But he did it wrong. The next morning, I took the iPhone to the nearest unofficial service, which promised to solve all its problems not very expensively and in the shortest possible time.

The guys have already successfully changed the batteries of mutual friends on old iPhones, which were inherited by relatives, as well as the screen on one broken iPad. Therefore, the decision to trust them “on advice” was far from the stupidest.

I doubt it's too expensive, but for the repair counted almost 23 thousand rubles- 15 for the screen, 3 for the body and 5 for the camera. It’s also a pity, in this case we are talking about high-quality, but non-original parts.

Something went wrong?

In a couple of months iPhone Stopped unlocking with fingerprint, and the Touch ID section in the menu turned out to be inactive. A couple of attempts to reflash the device did not lead to anything.

We took the iPhone to another unofficial service to find out what facts to deal with before the one who carried out the repair.

It turned out that the latter had placed the cable of the Home button incorrectly, so it pressed on it while pressing and eventually broke. Everything would be fine, but due to the safety of the mechanism, it cannot be adequately replaced. The device works fine, but without all the benefits of Touch ID.

The specialists simply refused any responsibility. Repair warranty- one month. Then you solve all the problems yourself or for a fee.

What needed to be done?

I’ve never encountered a similar question, but the guys “in the know” suggested that in situations where repairs are far from cheap, it’s better change Apple devices to new ones at official service centers.

In the end we would get Brand new device with manufacturer's warranty, adding just a little more than 6 thousand rubles. This is the right decision that we didn’t know about.

It’s a pity that there are no escape routes left for further work with the “officials”. Only devices without the consequences of unqualified repairs and any non-original components are accepted for replacement. We can't go any further.

By the way, if you are replacing a device, do not forget to turn off the “Find iPhone” function - this is a prerequisite.

What did you learn from the situation?

Of course, if you need to replace the battery or make any simple repairs, you can contact a regular workshop, which you can definitely trust.

And no matter how you use Apple Trade In, if your device has no trade-in value, you can always recycle it responsibly for free.

How long does the online trade-in process take?

Generally it takes 2–3 weeks. But the sooner you send us your device, the sooner we can verify its condition and process your credit or gift card.

Recycling a device is much faster. As soon as we email you a prepaid shipping label, just send your device to our recycling partner.

If I buy a new device online with a trade-in, what kind of credit will I get?

It depends on what you buy and how you pay for it.

If you buy an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch and pay in full, we’ll apply a credit to your original purchase method up to the total price. For any remaining amount, you’ll receive an Apple Store Gift Card via email.

If you buy an iPhone using Apple iPhone Payments and include a trade-in, your estimated trade-in credit will be applied directly to the purchase price of your new iPhone. Once we receive your trade-in device and confirm that the condition matches what you described, there’s nothing more you need to do. If it doesn’t match, your original payment method will be charged the difference in value. In that case, we’ll work with you to confirm that you still want to move forward with the trade-in.

Can I see what my device is worth online, then bring it with me when I buy a new device in the store?

Yes, the Apple Trade In program is available on as well as in all our retail stores. The only exception is that Mac trade-ins are only available online.

However, keep in mind that the trade-in credit you get in the store may be different from the estimated trade-in value you received online.

How much will I get for my trade-in?

It depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. Answer a few questions accurately, and once we receive the device within the specified time frame and verify its condition, you’ll most likely receive the full amount of the estimated refund.

Keep in mind that we need to receive your device within 14 days of initiating the trade-in, and the condition needs to match what you told us.

If the condition of the device is different from what you described, we’ll provide a revised value. You can either accept or reject it. If you accept it, we’ll continue with the trade-in and either charge or credit the difference in value to the card you provided. If you reject it, we’ll cancel the trade-in, return your old device, and charge the original trade-in value to your card. No matter what, we’ll send you email updates about the progress of your trade-in, so you’ll know what’s happening at every step.

Does Apple offer recycling?

Yes. Apple Trade In lets you recycle any Apple device (including devices from Apple-owned brands) at any Apple Store and on for free. Keep in mind that the estimated trade-in value is valid for 14 days, and we encourage you to send the device to us within this time frame to ensure that you get this value. Recycled devices should be sent back as soon as possible, at a time that’s convenient for you.

Why do you need trade-in at all?

Trade-in itself is a very convenient service. It implies an additional payment for a new product, taking into account the return of the old one. Apple in Russia has periodically held such events in the past in the form of promotions: in 2014, this promotion was launched by Eldorado, later by Euroset and DNS and others. This allows you to “bind” the client to you in order to solve problems with updating the model range.

What is the essence of this new trade-in?

There are no exact trade-in conditions on partner websites. Will they replace an iPhone with a broken speaker or microphone? What if I changed the battery (which almost 50% of iPhone users do)? What if I damaged the device?

You will not know the amount for which you will sell your model until you come to the store with a passport.

Svyaznoy says that the promotion is unlimited, while the re:Store website indicates the validity period until August 15. The promotion is valid throughout Russia.

How is this announced on the partner’s website?

“The promotion is valid for purchases in retail stores and when ordering in an online store, subject to pickup. You can trade in iPhone 4 and newer, and purchase iPhone 6 and newer. The returned iPhone must be purchased from an authorized Apple partner in Russia.

Individuals who have reached the age of 18 can take part in the promotion.

To find out the possible size of the discount, you need to go to any retail store with your passport and iPhone. When purchasing through a promotion, it is not possible to purchase an iPhone in installments, but credit is available. The promotion cannot be combined with other discounts and special offers. The bonus program is valid only for accrual purposes; bonuses cannot be written off.

The quantity of goods participating in the promotion is limited. The company reserves the right to terminate the promotion early,” the website says.

How does this actually work now?

The cost of trade-in is calculated individually and only upon inspection in the store. The iPhone must work, must be purchased only from an official reseller in Russia, and must not have chips or cracks. All of Europe, America and Asia are passing by.

They accept any iPhone, starting from iPhone 4. Price range: from 500 rubles. (iPhone 4) up to 25,000 rub. (iPhone 7 Plus 256).

On site, a store employee visually inspects the device. The device is then connected to a computer, which reads data from the iPhone and communicates with Apple servers. Apple returns the discount amount in rubles or reports a refusal.

The iPhone is not disassembled. The server does everything for the employee, and the amount is calculated based on the data received by the computer. A trade-in agreement is drawn up on the spot, in which the owner agrees to all the conditions, confirms the transfer of the device and waives claims.

On the old iPhone, the Apple ID is disabled, the password is removed, “Find iPhone” is turned off, and all information is erased. The owner selects the iPhone model to which he wants to exchange it.

For this model, immediately after signing the contract (on the spot, you can’t leave to think, you can’t get a gift card or a discount certificate), a discount is given equal to the amount that the server displayed to the employee.

What could be the benefit of this trade-in?

This offer is definitely not for those who would like to save money on purchasing equipment. They will be of interest to buyers who are afraid to sit on flea markets and bulletin boards, so as not to run into money or scams. Speed is also important here: in 30 minutes you sell your old iPhone and get a new one with an additional payment.

What are the most embarrassing moments, especially in Russia?

Prices for old devices are very much lower than the used equipment market. Having a quick look at Avito and other trade-in services, you understand that the price for an old device is unprofitable.

An iPhone purchased under the trade-in program from Apple partners does not have an installment system (when you buy a new iPhone, you take an installment plan for 6-12 months and make payments without interest). Why was the trade-in announced right now?

The release of the 8th iPhone model is approaching. Apple is trying to sell as many iPhone 7s as possible, as well as to “warm up” the audience before the release of the 8th iPhone.
