- The first method, in my opinion, is the simplest and fully automated (third-party software is involved).
- The second one involves some actions on your part (no installation of third-party software is required).
METHOD #1: Use the DiskMaker X 5 application
To create a bootable USB flash drive with an OS X installer, good people have created a special application - DiskMaker X. It is completely free and fully automates the process of formatting and transferring the installer to a USB drive. Brief instructions are given below.
STEP 2 - Launch the DiskMaker X application and in the window that opens, select the version of the operating system that we want to load onto the USB drive. In our case it is El Capitan.
STEP 3 - A couple more steps will follow where you will need to confirm the location of the installer itself (folder /Programs) and on which media you want to record it. Follow the on-screen prompts and agree where necessary.
The process of creating a bootable OS X flash drive takes about five minutes, so be patient. Once the process is completed, a corresponding message will appear.
To use a bootable flash drive, you need to restart the computer while holding down the Option (Alt) button, and select the USB drive from the boot manager.
METHOD #2: We use only standard OS X tools
This method is a little more complicated and takes longer, because... we will do everything manually. Follow the instructions below.
Part 1: Preparing USB media
STEP 1 - Insert the USB flash drive into your computer and launch Disk Utility. Then click on the name of this flash drive on the left side of the window. Let me remind you once again that the flash drive must be at least 8 GB in size.
STEP 2 - Select the "tab" Erase" and in the line Format please indicate MAC OS Extended (Journaled). Click the Erase button... and confirm your intentions again.
STEP 3 - Go to the " tab Disk partition" Expand menu Partition scheme and select Section 1.
STEP 4 - In the field Name enter untitled(this is important because in the next part we will refer to the USB drive by this name).
STEP 5 - Click the Options... button and select GUID Partition Scheme(necessary for copying system files to a USB drive). Confirm by clicking OK.
STEP 6 - After that, click on the Apply button. When the USB flash drive preparation process is complete, close Disk Utility.
Our flash drive is ready! Now all that remains is to transfer the OS X installer downloaded earlier to it. More about this in the second part below.
Part 2: Transfer the OS X installer to a USB drive
STEP 1 - At the very beginning of the article, you should have downloaded the OS X El Capitan installer. If you haven't done this yet, come back and download it. As a result, the downloaded installer “Install OS X El Capitan.app” (size 6.2 GB) should be located in the folder Programs.
STEP 2 - Launch Terminal and run the following command (to avoid typos, just copy and paste the text below):
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/untitled —applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app
If you are unable to run this command in the Terminal and instead receive the message “ command not found“, then you indicated something incorrectly somewhere.
In my case, I incorrectly specified the name of the installer a couple of times, which in the end should be like this: Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app ( Each space in the file name in the Terminal must be preceded by a backslash).
STEP 3 - Enter the administrator password when asked ( your password will not be displayed in the Terminal window, and it will seem that you are not typing anything at all - this is how it should be). After you press ENTER, you will be asked for confirmation to erase the USB drive - enter the letter Y and press ENTER again.
STEP 4 - In the window terminal The process of creating a bootable USB flash drive with OS X El Capitan will begin. Boot files and the OS X installer itself will be copied to the USB flash drive.
STEP 5 - After the process has completed successfully, close the window terminal. To use a flash drive, restart your computer while holding down the Option (Alt) button and select removable media in the download manager.
Somehow like this! The first method of creating a bootable USB flash drive with OS X was much simpler, but the second method is not particularly annoying, although you have to do a little manual work. As always, the choice is yours.
