Preface and summary technical specifications Meizu smartphone M6

The Chinese company Meizu did not immediately “find itself” in the world of electronics. It entered the market with portable MP3 players, but then pivoted to smartphones, and here it was able to fully realize its ambitions. Now Meizu produces a full range of smartphones: from budget phones to flagships.

Our today's “patient” (the Meizu M6 smartphone), according to its classification, falls somewhere at the intersection of the upper part of the “state sector” and the lower part of the “mid-range”. Everything will depend on which store and at what price you find it. :)

(image from the manufacturer's official website)

Official website Mymeizu.ru

The average price in Russian retail for the version with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM as of the date of review is about 8,600 rubles, which is more or less humane taking into account the listed characteristics.

The smartphone is available in five colors; we received a gold-colored smartphone in a minimal configuration: 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash memory.

Packaging and accessories

The packaging of our “patient” is snow-white and extremely laconic. On the side is the manufacturer's name, on top is the model name. In a word - traditional Meizu style.

The packaging thus functions as packaging rather than as decoration.

The smartphone package contains only minimum required components: charger, a cable for it, a tool for removing the tray, a “User’s Guide” and a warranty card.

The charger and cable are worth a look, but the rest of the kit is too ordinary to be admired:

Charging is even a little more powerful than this phone requires: 5 Volts with an output current of 1.5 Amperes. But "the reserve is not enough for the pocket!"

The included tool for removing the SIM/memory card tray is, as usual, included purely symbolically - it can easily be replaced with a paper clip with a bent end.

As a result, the kit includes:
- smartphone;
- charger;
- USB cable- microUSB;
- a tool for removing the SIM/memory card tray;
- "User's Guide" and warranty card.

The equipment is thus minimal; but sufficient to put the smartphone into operation.

Appearance, designs and software of the Meizu M6 smartphone

The design of the smartphone is made in a fairly traditional form, which is familiar and familiar to the user. But there is a subtlety - the absence of standard three buttons Android, instead of them there is only one. To reveal the secret of this phenomenon, let’s first look at the smartphone along with the transport protective film:

This film explains exactly how to live when the usual buttons are missing; and at the same time - what is the mTouch button and how to use it. Take a closer look at the bottom of the previous photo:

So, the only button located at the bottom of the smartphone is a three-function one; Meizu called it mTouch. On the protective film, the rules for using this electronic-mechanical button are explained very briefly in good English.

Firstly, this button contains a built-in fingerprint scanner. To unlock with a fingerprint or a scanned finger, press the button until it clicks; or first “light up” the screen, for example, by briefly pressing the power button, and then gently (without clicking) put your finger on the button. Last method provides more reliable fingerprint unlocking.

Secondly, it serves as a “back” button (with a “normal” touch),

Third, it serves as a home button when pressed until it clicks.

Instead of the side buttons of standard Android, you use a finger movement from the field under the screen to the screen itself (this is also indicated on the protective film).

Getting used to such a system comes quickly and everything turns out very naturally.

The following photo shows the smartphone in the turned on state:

The upper part of the Meizu M6 is more familiar. Proximity and light sensors are located on top, speaker and front camera. There is an LED for indicating charging status events, but it only works to indicate events and does not show the charging process status.
The indicator LED lights up with a fairly noticeable white-blue light:

The front panel glass has rounded edges - the so-called “2.5D glass”. There's nothing you can do about it - fashion! :)

Let's take a look at the smartphone with reverse side, first from the bottom edge:

And now - from the top edge:

The photographs are shown before removing the protective film from the rear side. It is on this protective film Instructions for using the tray for SIM cards and memory cards are shown.
There is a great temptation to leave this protective film on the smartphone forever (so as not to scratch the back side), but you still have to remove it, since it is glued on top of the camera (which does not improve its optical properties in any way).

There is no reason to describe the rear view of the smartphone - it is so standard that there is nowhere else to go. :)
Just two little things need to be mentioned. Firstly, what is the "MEIZU" logo on back cover It doesn’t seem embossed, but in reality it is. And secondly, although two speaker grilles are visible on the bottom edge, there is actually one speaker there, and behind the second grille is a microphone.

The case material is plastic, no metal.

The SIM and memory card tray looks like this:

The tray is also made in accordance with the latest fashion trends, and this is bad. For this fashion is that one of seats is combined - can be installed or SIM, or memory card; but it’s impossible to do everything together. And it would be okay if the smartphone had plenty of memory, otherwise there isn’t that much of it, especially in the modification being tested (16 GB). So the user will have to choose the lesser, in his opinion, of two evils: either the smartphone will have little memory or few SIM cards (only one).

Now let's move on from design Meizu M6 to his software. It is located on a couple of “main” screens and is also “hidden” in a couple of folders - “Tools” and “Miscellaneous”.

Pre-installed applications- A little; on the smartphone there is, one might say, a “naked” Android, but in the form that Meizu understands it in accordance with its Flyme OS 6 concept. That is, complete identity with standard Android no, there are differences in the menu, settings, etc.; but this is just a matter of getting used to and does not cause any difficulties.

But, most importantly, in the given screenshots of the software No app store Google Play Market, without which there simply is not and cannot be happiness in life!

Now - information of particular importance. Already in the course of compiling this review, Meizu announced (11/15/2017) that it had certified its latest devices on Google; and that from now on Google services will be installed on her devices (incl. Play Market). Details - at Russian Meizu website.
In this regard, the information presented below on installing the Play Market may not be relevant for many users, but just in case, let it be.

So, the smartphone has a "third-party" application store called " App Store"(blue icon in the first of the screenshots with a list of programs). Launch it and enter Google or Google Play in the search bar; the main thing is that there is the word “Google”. It will not be found, but the App Store will prompt you to look for other stores:

Ok, we agree to search in other stores and enter Google Play in the search bar. There are a lot of Google services, but we need to find and launch installation of Play Store with an icon in the form of a characteristic triangle:

After starting the installation, the smartphone will also ask for permission to install Google services, we agree:

That's it, the process has been successfully completed. With good download speed, all these shenanigans can be completed in 5 minutes.

Here is a brief summary of the required minimum “young fighter course” on the software of the Meizu M6 smartphone and other Meizu smartphones.

Display

The smartphone display has a resolution of HD - 1280 x720. Screen size - 5.2 inches; pixel density - 282 per inch (high). The display is made using OGS (One Glass Solution) technology without an air gap between the screen itself and the pressure-sensitive surface, which reduces glare from external sources Sveta.

The screen itself is made according to IPS technology, which, with technically competent execution, provides very positive characteristics (color rendition, viewing angles, etc.).

Let's see how good he is at it.

The uniformity of brightness between white and black screens is excellent, without "spots".

The measurement results of technical parameters are shown in the following table (display settings are “default”):

The brightness adjustment range is sufficient to work in any lighting conditions - both low and high, up to direct sun.

Screen viewing angles are average. When the screen is rotated significantly, the image remains clear and colors do not degrade, but the brightness drops significantly. We can say that this smartphone is strictly for personal use, and not for collective viewing of photos or films. And the screen is not too large for these purposes.

The color temperature (8000K) was higher than the standard (6500K), which gives the image a slight “cool” tint. If desired, you can correct it using the built-in screen adjustment utility.

Contrast is very high, " upper class", since it significantly exceeds 1000.

The color gamut (triangle with white borders) does not completely coincide with the sRGB standard (triangle with gray borders), but it is unlikely that any user will be able to notice this:

Touch is normal: the display recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches. This is perhaps even an “architectural excess” for a screen of this size, but oh well, so be it. Touch sensitivity is at a good level.

In addition, we should note the remarkable olephobic coating of the screen: the finger glides perfectly, fingerprints do not stick well to the screen.

At the end of this part of the “medical examination”, we must admit that the screen is very good, and for its price class it is absolutely wonderful!

Platform and performance of the Meizu M6 smartphone

The Meizu M6 smartphone uses a 64-bit MediaTek MT6750 processor (SoC), consisting of as many as 8 Cortex-A53 cores, but they are not equal. The cores form two clusters of 4 cores; in the “slow” cluster they operate at a frequency of 1 GHz, and in the “fast” cluster - 1.5 GHz.

Volume RAM our patient has 2 GB, this is a normal average level. A permanent memory- 16 GB, this will not be enough. But, let me remind readers, a modification of this smartphone is also available with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of flash memory. True, as they said in the classic film, “the better the fur, the more expensive it is.” :)

Let's take a look at the device platform from the point of view of the AnTuTu benchmark:

Now let's start testing; Let's start with the same AnTuTu:

In total, the result of the antutu test for the Meizu M6 smartphone was 40198 parrot points. This just falls on a certain conventional border between “state employees” and “middle peasants”. But for comfortable work the vast majority of ordinary (i.e., non-gaming) applications will be enough, and you can even play some 3D games.

Let's run a little more in other "running" tests.

Geekbench:

Epic Citadel, minimum quality settings:

The result is good, games of this level (with not very dynamic action) will run fine.

Now - the same Epic Citadel, but at maximum quality settings:

For maximum quality settings, the result is not bad either. The explanation here is simple: the screen resolution is not Full HD (1920*1080), but “simply” HD (1280*720), which facilitates the tasks of the processor and graphics.

Then - 3 DMark in the "Ice Storm Extreme" version:

The results are average, confirming that the device is not hopeless for 3D games. But not for everyone.

And one more thing - Basemark X:

Finally, Bonsai:

What conclusion should be drawn from these tests?
Only one: performance- at an intermediate level, when for “cool” games it’s still not enough, but for average games it’s already enough, especially if the settings are lowered.

Let's move on to flash memory.

On a “freshly unpacked” smartphone, 9.76 GB of the total volume of 16 GB is available to the user. The rest is occupied by the operating system and reserve:

Free memory space is “not a lot”. The user will need to either fill the memory very sparingly and clear it of “garbage” in a timely manner, or simply fork out for an additional memory card (sacrificing a second SIM card for it). Or, as an option, purchase a modification that is not the same as described in this test, and the “senior” one, where 32 GB of flash memory is installed.

To connect external storage “temporarily”, you can use standard USB flash drives using USB port OTG. The following screenshot shows the memory status when both a micro SD memory card and an external USB flash drive are connected at the same time:

True, in the picture just presented there is a built-in file manager smartphone for some reason shows instead of the name of the volume of a flash drive of some kind internal number"2E8F-8A3A", but there are other file managers in nature.

But to connect flash drives and other devices to your smartphone via a USB port, you will need to purchase an additional USB OTG adapter for standard port micro-USB (there are no problems in trading with them).

Multimedia (sound and video)

The smartphone has a standard sound design: a monaural ringing speaker and a headphone output in the form of a standard 3.5 mm jack. Innovations from the latest trends in the spirit of smartphones without a standard headphone output, thank God, have not been applied.

Bass in the sound of the built-in speaker, as usual, is poorly represented, high and mid frequencies are normal. Volume level is good. Even quiet tracks in films can be “boosted” by adjusting the volume to a comfortable level.

In headphones (if they are medium or high level) you can hear more high quality sound. There are no problems with the frequency range, noise does not get through. And the volume, similar to the built-in speaker, has a large margin of adjustment.

Playing video with the built-in player pleased me with the successful recognition of all standard video and audio formats offered to it; There was no need to install an external player. But the processor speed limitation had an effect: the smartphone showed videos with formats higher than Full HD @30 fps with frame drops. True, there is no point in playing such videos here, since the screen resolution is lower than the video resolution, and there will be no improvement in quality.

We assess the level of multimedia in our “patient” as good.

Communication and navigation

The smartphone has modern 4G connectivity. The OOKLA Speedtest application showed the following average speed value:

These numbers, of course, simply confirm that the 4G Internet channel is operating at an adequate level. Real speed in different areas and areas different operators can be very different.

Other types of demons wired communication- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked without problems, as is usually the case. But NFC did not work, because... it's simply not there.

Navigation system the smartphone was completed in a little more than a minute during a “cold” start; and with “hot” starts - in a few seconds (this is how it should be).

The launch of the AndroidTS navigation testing application showed that the smartphone supports only two navigation systems - imperialist GPS and domestic GLONASS:

A test recording of the track confirmed very good navigation accuracy. Here is an example of recording several circles on a bicycle around the Falcon Fort quarter (a photo of this quarter will be later, in the camera testing section):

We rate the navigation as very good.

Battery

Smartphone battery capacity - 3070 mAh; which should be considered an attempt to somehow stand out from other smartphones that have a capacity of exactly 3000 mAh. :)

In the Guided Tour test of the 3D game Epic Citadel, the smartphone worked for just over 4 hours; and when watching HD movies - almost 9 hours. These results are roughly in line with the typical average.

The charging time was about 2.5 hours, which is very good (the typical time for a typical phone is 3 hours exactly).

Under heavy load, the smartphone did not heat up much, there were no signs of overheating.

We estimate the autonomy of the device at the usual average level.

Cameras

So we come to the most ambiguous place of our “patient” - the cameras.

The main (rear) camera has 13 megapixelsher (4160*3120), F/2.2; and the front one has 8 megapixel (3264*2448), F/2.

According to the official Meizu website, the main camera has an RGBW sensor, which should improve the camera's performance in low-light conditions (see the article about these sensors on Wikipedia). The manufacturer does not indicate which specific sensor is used in this smartphone, but Doctor Smartpulse suspects that it is the IMX278 sensor from SONY.

We'll start testing with photos taken with the main camera.

When clicked, the photos will be displayed in a new window in full size, file volume - up to 6 MB (!).

Street photography.

MSTU im. Bauman (former MVTU), formerly called abroad "Soviet Rocket College", (ISO 112)

In general, the quality is not bad, but there is a noticeable drop in clarity at the left edge of the image. This is a defect in the optics, most likely in the front protective window of the camera. This will also apply to all subsequent photographs.

Video shooting test(main camera). Train to MCC (Moscow):

The video was shot in Full HD format (1920x1080), stream 17.2 Mbit/s, 30 frames per second (these are normal parameters for Full HD format). The video is of average quality, could be better.

The freeze frame shows low image clarity (at magnification up to 100%), as well as “brokenness” of inclined lines:

With this, we consider the consultation of doctors complete and move on to the results.

Final diagnosis of the Meizu M6 smartphone

The smartphone is one of the most affordable models from Meizu. B in this capacity It lives up to expectations and is well worth the price.

If we talk more specifically about the advantages and disadvantages, then they can be described as follows.

The advantages include compact dimensions with a small thickness, a very high-quality screen, a good level of navigation, as well as performance sufficient even for some 3D games (but not all). WITH wireless communication- complete order; As for wired communication, there is support for USB OTG (you can connect flash drives and some other devices).

In terms of shortcomings, we note the inconsistent quality of photos and videos. The matrix in the camera lives up to its reputation for low noise, but is let down by the quality of the optics and software algorithms for processing photos and videos. There is still a certain “margin” of quality that the manufacturer could increase by simply “correcting” the firmware (whether he will do this is another question).

Where to buy.
For the Russian Federation the most the right way- choose a retail outlet or online store on Yandex Market (just don’t confuse the Meizu M6 and Meizu M6 Note phones! With the “Note” suffix it is better, but more expensive).
Other countries should also have similar services for finding retail outlets.
