The laptop came to us for testing in close cardboard box. Inside we saw the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 itself, a battery and a power supply. The package included brief instructions With introductory information, which additionally included a list of telephone numbers of technical support centers in different countries. Also provided electronic manual user on the laptop hard drive.

Design

Not many laptops have a case whose lid is made of soft-touch plastic that is pleasant to the touch. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 is exactly that. At the same time, there is nothing superfluous in the design: the lid is decorated with a small chrome Lenovo logo, located in the lower left corner, and a silver ThinkPad insert, where a red LED is lit above the i, also known as the laptop operation indicator.

In general, both from an aesthetic point of view and in terms of functionality, the design looks great, because the combination of black, silver and red itself looks very attractive.

The laptop body has a smooth shape with rounded edges and a beautiful “steel” frame around the lid, while the thickness of the panels tapers only slightly towards the front edge. By the way, the dimensions of the Edge E530 are 375x245x28-34 mm, and the laptop weighs 2.5 kg, so you can use it both for daily trips and for working in the office or at home.

Unlike top panel laptop, the bottom is made of rough plastic. On it you can see two sliders for removing battery and several compartments, where the largest one has ventilation holes. Memory modules are also hidden here. HDD. There are also four rubber feet on the bottom.

The base and lid of the laptop are connected using two strong metal hinges. The tight fit does not allow you to open the ThinkPad Edge E530 with one hand, but the display does not wobble at all. The maximum opening angle of the laptop is 135 degrees.

Let's see what the inside looks like. The same rough plastic is used here as on the bottom. It is quite rigid, and even significant pressure does not deform the inner surface. Even though there is no soft touch, the wrist rest is comfortable for your hands.

On working panel Only the power button, the backing and the webcam area stand out due to the gloss, which fits perfectly into the overall design.

Of course, the branded ThinkPad logo, similar to what can be seen on the lid, has not been forgotten. The only difference is that below this insert the inscription Edge has been added, the letters of which are pressed into the palm area. In general, the design of the laptop is more strict and conducive to work than frivolous.

Display, sound, webcam

The ThinkPad Edge E530 has a 15.6-inch matte TN display with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. The screen has a brightness level of 220-nits and a fairly high contrast ratio of 400:1. It is good for both indoor and outdoor work thanks to matte finish display and good performance. In general, compared to the displays of other business laptops with lower contrast, the screen in the E530 looks very decent.

The viewing angles of this laptop are good. The image is normal from horizontal and vertical positions, color distortion and brightness changes are almost invisible. But, of course, this laptop is more adapted for individual use.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 laptop has two speakers. They are located on the bevel of the front edge under the long grille. Convenient location avoids volume loss. The predominance of high and mid frequencies is compensated by the purity of the sound, and the absence of distortion even at the most maximum volume.

On the display frame there is a lens of a built-in webcam with a resolution of 1 megapixel. On either side of it you can see two microphones, which can be turned off with the key if desired.

Using the camera, you can chat via Skype and also take pictures. Below you can see an example of such a photograph.

Keyboard and touchpad

For a 15.6-inch laptop, the island keyboard on the ThinkPad Edge is quite large, which has a positive effect on the size of the buttons. It's interesting that they actual size is 15x15 mm, but visually they seem larger than, for example, the buttons on the Samsung RV 518 of the same size.

The keys have a long travel, and their shape (except for the arrows and the top function row) is similar to those in the IdeaPad, i.e. They are rounded at the bottom and concave, which means they are also very comfortable for the fingers. The surface of each button is rough and has a white marking on it. The keyboard is complemented by a separate digital block with full-size keys.

They also decided not to skimp on the size of the pointer block, so these keys were reduced quite slightly. LED backlight There are no keys in this laptop, but it has a waterproof surface.

The keyboard layout is non-standard. The first thing that catches your eye is the button located in the lower left corner, not . By the way, by default - pressed with . An equally interesting solution is to place it on the right between and .

In the center of the keyboard is the Lenovo UltraNav trackpoint. It is located between the [G], [B] and [H] buttons and attracts attention with its bright red color. The mini-joystick is very responsive in operation; just a small touch to its surface is enough, and the cursor easily moves across the entire display area. In addition, the trackpoint's rubberized pad is pleasant to the touch, allowing for easy positioning. In settings you can choose suitable sensitivity, assign a scrolling function, go to work with a magnifying glass for zooming (from one-time magnification to eight-fold). Additionally, you can set the size of the magnifying glass (small, medium, large or custom). By the way, the trackpoint in the Edge E530 is complemented by three buttons, two large functional ones replace the right and left mouse keys, and the one in the middle is used instead of the scroll wheel. They all press softly and quietly.

The touchpad keys are not highlighted separately. They are hidden under the common platform, but their presence is indicated by a thin strip separating the boundaries of the touch zone and buttons. The keys have a short stroke and are pressed easily with a quiet click. The only thing is that the area allocated for them is too small, so you need to get used to hitting the buttons accurately. By the way, the touch pad itself is medium in size and has a fine-point texture. This is enough for normal cursor control; in addition, fingers do not stick, which ensures optimal speed pointer movement. Using multi-touch gestures, you can scroll through images with three or four fingers, enlarge or reduce images with two fingers, and also perform rotation.

To the right of the touchpad is a fingerprint sensor. It is provided for safe storage data so that no one else can use it confidential information by logging into your laptop. In business devices, the presence of such a sensor is especially important.

Performance

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 comes pre-installed with a 64-bit operating system Windows system 8, which determined the laptop performance index with the lowest score of 4.8 points, which was received by the integrated graphics. At the same time, the processor earned the highest score – 7.1, and the second place of honor was taken by the graphics for games with 6.4 points.

The laptop runs on a third generation processor Ivy Bridge– Intel Core i5-3210M with clock frequency 2.5 GHz, and 3 MB L3 cache. The chip with two computing cores is manufactured according to the 22-nanometer process technology, and thanks to Hyper-Threading technology it can simultaneously handle four threads of commands. Turbo technology Boost allows you to overclock the processor up to 3.1 GHz.

The processor specifications, as well as cache information, can be seen in the screenshot of the CPU-Z application.

By the way, in our region there are quite a lot of configurations with second and third generation processors. These include Intel Pentium, Intel Celeron, Core i3, as well as some other Core i5 models.

The processor is equipped with a built-in Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics card, built using a 22-nanometer process technology. It is suitable for office tasks, 4K video decoding and general computing operations. HD Graphics 4000 can also display images on multiple external displays simultaneously.

However, for high graphics performance, it is better to use the NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M discrete graphics card, which is also found in the ThinkPad Edge E530. Switching between video cards can be done either manually or automatically using NVIDIA Optimus technology. GPU GT 635M has 2 GB own memory with a frequency of 785 MHz. By the way, both video cards support DirectX 11.

Let's immediately pay attention to the processor performance and Intel video cards HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M in 3DMark06 and 3DMark 11 synthetic tests. Overall result, obtained in the 3DMark06 application with integrated graphics, was 4643 points (1450 points in SM2.0 Score, and 1976 in HDR/SM3.0).

Of course, when testing with a discrete video card, we got higher scores - 8981 points. There have also been changes in the evaluation of the shader unit SM2.0 and HDR/SM3.0 – 3715 and 3458.

The same trend continued in the 3DMark 11 program - the results with the GeForce GT 635M were almost twice as high. NVIDIA graphics scored 1076 points.

We suggest using a graph to compare the results of 3DMark06 and 3DMark 11 with an integrated video card with other laptops. The results of the first test were not too high compared to competitors. In the second, only a slight lag was noticeable.

On the contrary, with active discrete graphics in 3DMark06 we see a clear advantage of the NVIDIA GT 635M in the Edge E530 over the NVS 5200M in the ASUSPRO B53V and the GeForce 610M in the ASUS K55VD. By the way, in 3DMark 11 the GT 635M is second only to the Radeon HD 7730M Dell laptop Inspiron 7520.

As for testing in Cinebench R11.5, the discrete video card showed a good result in OpenGL mode – 25.24 fps. At the same time, the processor received 2.84 pts. The screenshot can be seen below.

To compare the results of the processor and discrete graphics, we took the business model B53V, a budget laptop ASUS class K55VD as well Dell Inspiron 7520. The graph shows that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M outperformed the GeForce 610M in terms of frames per second and was only slightly inferior to the graphics of the NVIDIA NVS 5200M and Radeon 7730M.

Concerning random access memory, then our laptop had one bracket installed Samsung memory M471B5273DH0-CK0 with a capacity of 4 GB. The second RAM slot is free. The memory has a DDR3 standard, frequency 1600 MHz. If you wish, you can independently equip the laptop with a larger amount of RAM, for example 8 GB or 16 GB.

ThinkPad Edge E530 uses a hard drive Western Digital WDC WD5000LPVT-08G33T1, connected via SATA-II interface (data transfer up to 300 MB/s). This 2.5-inch hard drive has a capacity of 500 GB and a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. The HDD buffer capacity is 8 MB. The HD Tune Pro 5.00 benchmark allows you to find out specifications drive, as well as data transfer speed and access time. From the information received it follows that maximum speed hard drive equal to 120.2 MB/s, minimum – 44.7 MB/s. These and other results are in the screenshot.

Based on the data reading speed results, we built a graph. For comparison, all the same laptop models were taken. Compared to the Seagate and WD hard drives in the Inspiron 7520 and ASUS K55VD, the maximum reading speed of WD turned out to be high. As for the average, here all speeds turned out to be almost equal.

You can also look at the results of the CrystalDiskMark test. For example, when determining the sequential read and write speed of a hard drive, we got 107.8 MB/s and 106.8 MB/s.

After this, the PCMark 7 program was launched, which comprehensively analyzed everything system components. In this test, 2649 points were obtained, and the leader immediately stood out - Computation test. The 15043 points obtained in it indicate good computing performance. For comparison: the Creativity test (working with graphics) came second with a difference of more than 9,500 points. The remaining results did not exceed 2600 points.

For comparison, the graph shows the results of the Edge E530 and its competitors. It shows that the Lenovo laptop took an honorable second place, losing to ASUPRO B53V with only 429 points.

Games

This section, of course, will not talk about the gaming performance of the built-in HD Graphics 4000 video card, although it can handle simple games with ease. Let's see how the NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M discrete graphics behaves in games. For testing, we installed the first-person shooter Battlefield 3 and the sports simulator FIFA 13 on the laptop.

Battlefield 3 was set to medium graphics settings and native resolution 1366x768 pixels. At the same time, the game ran at 27-33 frames per second, and the process itself was smooth, without slowdowns. In FIFA 13 we left the same resolution and were able to play normally with maximum settings with an average of 30 fps.

Ports and communications

All ports of the ThinkPad Edge E530 laptop are located on the side edges. On the back of the case you can only see the battery and a small ventilation grille, and in front is a 4-in-1 card reader.

As for the right side of the laptop, there is a USB 2.0 port. With Always On USB support, you can charge devices such as a tablet or mobile phone through this interface even when the laptop is turned off. Also on the right there is an RJ-45 network connector and a built-in DVD burner from PLDS (Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions). At the very edge there is a combined audio jack for connecting headphones and a microphone.

By the way, on the bottom there is a small square hole with a screw. By unscrewing it, you can easily remove the optical drive from the case.
The Broadcom BCM4313GN 802/11 b/g/n Wi-Fi module is located behind a small compartment on the bottom. The package also includes Bluetooth 4.0.

Heat and noise

Based on the laptop's hardware, we can assume that it won't get too hot even under maximum load, but let's see what the measurement results show.

We ran the HW Monitor program, which determined the heating internal components. The screenshot shows that when conducting a stress test (Furmark for the video card and AIDA64 stress test for the processor), the CPU heated up to 73 degrees Celsius, and the temperature of the hard drive remained stable (32°C-39°C).

As for heating the laptop case, during idle time the warmest place was the center of the bottom, where the temperature did not exceed 34.1 degrees Celsius, and the average heating of the working surface was a cool 25°C.

And under load, only some parts of the case became very hot. It is especially pleasant that the under-palm area remained cool during the launch of FurMark and the AIDA stress test - 22-23 degrees Celsius. Along with this, the center of the keyboard and top part the cases were hotter with an average temperature of 39°C.

As for noise, at idle it is 42.3 dB. Of course, under load the ThinkPad Edge E530 will be audible, as the readings increase to 50.1 dB. If you look at the graph based on noise level, you can see that when idle the E530 is on par with two laptops from ASUS. But under load it makes a little more noise.

Battery

The laptop has a 6-section lithium ion battery SANYO 45N1043 with a capacity of 4100 mAh (48 Wh).

Battery testing at Battery Eater showed that the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 has a good battery life. So, in terms of power supply, “Energy Saving” in “Read’s” mode, the ThinkPad Edge E530 worked for 4 hours 15 minutes, and when switching to “High Performance”, the operating time in this mode decreased by no more than an hour, which is also not bad. Of course, the duration of work in “Classic” will be more modest, although it will easily serve the same 1.4-1.5 hours. If you leave the device in idle mode, the battery will discharge only after 7 hours and 17 minutes.

Now let's see how much energy it consumes this device when connected to the network. As usual, we measured power consumption in three modes: idle, web surfing and under load. In the first and second the results were 16 W and 20 W, respectively, while when running the stress test the result was 76 W. The graph clearly shows that when idle and when browsing the web, the results are lower than those of competitors.

Design

Lenovo Legion The Y530 stands out from the crowd of other laptops with its RGB lighting and excessive design elements. It has a minimalist style and black color with cool white backlighting. The spartan cap has the Legion logo imprinted on the left side with a small illuminated Y logo in the "O". The lid itself is now completely flat, without corners and pierced with a subtle spiral pattern. By the way, it opens about 180 degrees. One of the Y530's best features is its narrow 8mm display bezels, something you don't often see on budget gaming laptops. And a webcam was placed on the bottom frame. The power button is located on the keyboard in front of the Y530's sturdy hinge. The laptop's weight is 2.3 kg, which is slightly higher than that of its competitors, but its thin frames and size make it quite a compact device. There are many different ports on the sides; we will look at them in more detail later. In general, the laptop looks strictly, business-like, and will look appropriate both at home and in the office.

Graphics and testing

Lenovo Legion Y530 is equipped with NVIDIA video card GeForce GTX 1050 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. These video cards successfully run recent games at high settings, but especially demanding games in FHD resolution will have to be played at medium settings. But VR games are clearly not for him, the video card is simply weak for them. Game testing at GTX video card 1050 Ti and an Intel Core i5-8300H processor gave the following results:

Scores of 6,809 in 3DMark Fire Strike and 22,978 in Cloud Gate are reasonable and suggest we have a laptop that can easily handle most games at medium (and some high) settings. It's worth noting that these scores are almost identical to those of last year's Y520.

The Intel Core i5-8300H in our Y530 is a 45W quad-core processor. Performance is excellent, although clearly lower than that of six-core processors such as the Intel Core i7-8750H (which is available in some versions of the Y530) and Core i9-8950HK. The processor frequency ranges from 2.3 GHz to 4 GHz (3.9 GHz with 4 active cores) and supports Hyper-Threading technology. Our processor in the Y530 scores slightly above average for this CPU. 818 points in Cinebench R15 multiprocess - very good result(vs. the average i5-8300H processor - 788 points), and a score of 171 in one CPU is exactly what we expect to see. Sustained performance wasn't an issue in Cinebench's loop tests either, with scores only dropping from 829 to 804 on the seventh run, after which they returned to the 815-817 range, which is still above average for this processor.

Display

The 15.6-inch display of the Lenovo Legion Y530 laptop has a matte surface with FHD resolution. The screen does not shine with brightness, like on the previous model, there are problems with this. True, there are modifications of the model with increased brightness up to 300 cd/, there it is really better. The average measured brightness of the Y530's display reached 266 cd/m, which is only 20 cd/m brighter than last year's Y520 panel. The Y530's screen covers 87% of the sRGB color gamut, which is a good result.

Audio

The two Harman speakers located on the bottom of the Legion Y530 produce pretty decent sound, with average linearity, balanced highs and mids, but weak bass. Slight distortion may be noticeable at maximum volume levels. Overall the sound is good and will be sufficient for most purposes. Headphones can always help out.

Noise

Lenovo Legion Y530 is silent in standby mode. Under load, the average performance is also not high - 34.9 dB, which is 6.9 dB above the ambient level. At maximum load, a noise level of 49.6 dB was recorded while both fans were running at maximum speed.

Ports

This laptop has a good supply of ports. There are no them on the front panel, but there are 7 on the back panel: USB Type-C Gen 1, mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, charging port, locking port. On the right side there is USB 3.0 and an audio jack, and on the left there is one USB 3.0. There are no card readers at all.

Cooling and temperature

Larger fans on the Lenovo Legion Y530 provide more efficient cooling than the fans on the previous model. The large grille that spans almost half of the bottom of the laptop, combined with the spacious vents mounted in the corner, also ensures unobstructed airflow. Under load, the laptop stays cooler than most competitors. Under load, averages of 31.9°C/35.9°C top/bottom were recorded ( environment: 22°C) with hot spots of 42.8°C/52°C at the center of the underside of the laptop.

Battery life

The 52.5 Wh battery provides approximately 4 hours and 5 minutes of web surfing. This is a weak result compared to other similar laptops. Time battery life It has minimum value on a gaming laptop; 4 hours should be enough time to move around the house from room to room or get to the charger.

Software and Warranty

Lenovo Legion Y530 comes with or without operating system, or with Windows 10. Accordingly, the version with Windows is coming complete with pre-installed games. Lenovo installs its Vantage program, which allows you to get information on the video card, processor, RAM and storage. It is also possible to manually control the fans. The warranty on the laptop will extend for 1 year.

Conclusion

The Lenovo Legion Y530 is a great starting point for users looking for an entry-level gaming laptop with wide functionality. The developers moved away from bright colorful accents towards more professionally strict black and white colors. Although the Y530 is equipped with an inexpensive GeForce video card Powered by the GTX 1050 Ti and a simple quad-core processor, its performance is remarkably stable and the temperature and noise levels are within comfortable limits. Thus this model Can easily handle most games at medium to high settings. The disadvantages include the display - it does not provide any real advantages compared to previous model Y520, adding some brightness but reduced contrast with washed-out colors.
