The flush-to-floor method is applicable to the trunk where the tires are stored. The trunk floor successfully serves as an acoustic screen; the bass acquires good spaciousness and energy. This method can be used in different types of cars - sedan, coupe, station wagon, except for models that do not have space for spare tires. Moreover, installing a large-diameter subwoofer can cause problems, since there is not much space there.

Case weight

Bass energy causes surrounding objects to resonate. Each of them begins to produce sound at its own frequencies, which leads to degradation of the musical bass. To produce the cleanest, most uncontaminated bass possible, the subwoofer cabinet should be as heavy as possible so as not to resonate itself and spread the resonance. If the car is not excessively heavy, then the more weight the body has, the better the bass.

A good vibration dampening effect is achieved by using insulating material inside the housing, which is used in home speaker systems.

Material selection

For the speaker housing, you should choose a material that has the least resonance and does not drown out the sound. The most suitable material for car acoustics is wood. Fiberboard (fibreboard) is a very good material: cheap, heavy, difficult to resonate and easy to process. Birch and oak are also good: heavy and difficult to resonate, although the roads are difficult to process. It is best to use slabs thicker than 18 cm.

Sound-absorbing material is necessary, but not in too large quantities.

Sound-absorbing material is needed to reduce the effect of standing waves inside the housing. But if you use too much of this material, the sound becomes compressed and the speaker's output decreases. Adhere sound-absorbing material to at least the back wall inside the case, or at most to the back, top, and bottom walls inside the case. It is better to use sponge material, because... it has better sound-absorbing properties.

Rectangular. Such a body is easy to manufacture, but is prone to the formation of peaks above F3 and dips after F3. Leveling the characteristics is achieved by such methods as installing a reflective plate inside, reducing the parallel phase, and using sound-absorbing material.


Trapezoidal 1. Although the hump on the energy characteristic curve smooths out a little, the dip after the peak still remains. Moderate use of sound-absorbing material is advisable.


Trapezoidal 2. The characteristic is smoother than in the two previous cases. If the corners of the case are rounded, the characteristics will become even smoother.


Trapezoidal 3. Another trapezoidal shape is superimposed on the front part of the trapezoidal body 2. The curve takes on a smooth, sloping shape and the sound becomes more energetic.


Installing a subwoofer in the compartment where the spare tire is stored is called flush mounting. The floor of the luggage compartment forms an acoustic shield, convenient for the propagation of low frequencies. And if we can lower the transition frequency at the junction with the front speakers, this will be the best place to install a subwoofer.
