What Apple Watch models are there? Apple Watch: which one to buy and is it worth buying? Apple Watch series

Along with the new iPhones, Apple has also updated its line of smartwatches. Third Apple generation The Watch doesn't boast any radical improvements, but it does boast additional sensors and operating modes, and promises smoother operation thanks to the new SoC. We got to know the watch and used it in real life. This article contains all the details!

Before we get into what's new and what's new with the Apple Watch Series 3, let's take a look at the current Apple Watch lineup.

As we remember, the first Apple Watch came in two sizes (42 and 38 mm) and two types of materials: aluminum Apple Watch Sport with Ion-X glass and steel Apple Watch with sapphire crystal. In addition to this, there was also an elite Apple Watch Edition series, but this can be ignored, since million-dollar watches are a very tiny segment.

When the manufacturer introduced the second generation of watches a year later, there was no longer a steel version, but the first generation was still on sale in all its variety. And now, with the release of the Apple Watch Series 3, it was decided not to confuse customers completely and with a strong-willed decision to limit the choice by size (42 or 38 mm), generation (Series 1 or Series 3; Series 2 watches are no longer presented in the Apple Store) and color ( silver, gold, white or dark gray Space Gray).

Alas, you can no longer buy a watch with a stainless steel case and sapphire crystal, although this was a truly remarkable design decision. You can’t choose between Series 2 and Series 3. But the price of Series 1 has dropped to 18,490 rubles, so the choice strategy has become extremely simple: if you want to save money, take any version of Series 1; if you want much broader functionality, take Series 3. At the same time, In terms of appearance, they are practically the same (except for the color and straps, of course).

Let's take a look at the specs of the Apple Watch Series 3 and compare them to the two previous generations.

Of course, based on the specified characteristics, little can be said about the innovations of the Apple Watch Series 3, especially in comparison with the Series 2. Apple does not disclose details about single-chip systems: even the frequency of the CPU cores is not reported. We only know that all SoCs have two of them, but Series 3 has the most powerful SoC.

We cannot verify this with any tests, but traditionally the difference will be felt with the release of new versions of watchOS. Let's say, at the very first Apple Watch new watchOS 4 is noticeably slow.

As we can see, the main difference is the potential availability of a version with cellular communication. However, we must take into account that such options are not officially sold in Russia yet, since our operators do not yet support this option in the form that is implemented by Apple (via eSIM and using the same number with the iPhone). However, I think it’s a matter of time.

We will talk about other differences in this article.

Equipment

The packaging of the aluminum version of the Apple Watch Series 3 looks the same as the Apple Watch Series 2 and the first generation Apple Watch Sport. This is an elongated box made of thick cardboard.

The equipment of the new product is identical to that of models of previous generations: in addition to the watch itself, it includes a silicone strap (with a spare half of a smaller size - so that you can choose the best one for your hand), a 5 V 1 A charger, a USB cable with a wireless charging tablet at the end and leaflets with information for the user.

Charger from new Apple Watch is fully compatible with Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 1. And vice versa. Therefore, accessories will also work - for example, a convenient docking station.

Design

In appearance, the new product does not differ from its predecessor (Series 2). This is the same aluminum rectangular case with rounded corners and edges, as well as two buttons on the right side.

One of these buttons is oblong, the other is round, and at the same time serves as a wheel that can be rotated (Digital Crown). There is a feeling that the wheel scrolls more smoothly, and button presses, on the contrary, are a little tighter. But, firstly, we cannot compare directly, and secondly, even if this is so, then this is a plus, since it should have reduced the likelihood random clicks and make the wheel easier to use.

The screen size remains the same. We had the 42 mm version, and the 38 mm version is also available for sale. On the back we see a heart rate sensor and buttons for detaching the strap. The circular area around the sensor is ceramic. On the left side are the speaker and microphone holes.

The thickness of the new product is the same as that of the Apple Watch Series 2, which is a millimeter greater than that of the first Apple Watch and is apparently explained by enhanced moisture protection and the presence of a more capacious battery. However, the watch on your hand looks no worse than the first generation model. It’s just a pity that it’s not possible to select versions from other materials, but we’ve already complained about this and won’t repeat it.

Keeping the dimensions has one important advantage: absolutely all models of all generations of Apple Watch, including Series 3, are fully compatible with all released straps. Considering that some of these straps cost more than the watch itself (such as the steel block bracelet), it would simply be unfair to the people who bought them to change the way the straps are mounted on a new generation of watches.

At the same time, Apple continues to expand its range of straps. And we will talk about this in the next section of the article.

Straps 2017

Over the past six months, Apple has expanded the line several times. The latest update, timed to coincide with the release of the Apple Watch Series 3, was, as expected, the most radical, but there are a lot of interesting things among the spring-summer models. We managed to get to know them and even used some of them in everyday life.

Let's start with the most exciting new product: the nylon strap with Velcro. Apple is consistently expanding the types of clasps. Velcro fastening has been added to the magnetic clasps, classic buckle, butterfly buckle and sport strap button.

Here the strap is a continuous band without division into halves. It is attached to the watch using plastic blocks. And it is fixed on the hand, respectively, with the help of five Velcro. The advantage of this option is that you can adjust the size of the strap to your hand with maximum flexibility - down to the millimeter.

The surface of the strap itself is made of nylon threads different colors, this creates interesting shades: for example, the photo shows a black strap, but thanks to threads of other colors (it’s difficult to even make out which ones), an unusual combination is obtained. In our opinion, this strap goes well with a sweater or any other fluffy fall-winter clothing.

Another new strap is a variation of the nylon straps. The essence is the same (fastening, clasp, combination of threads of two colors), but the arrangement of the threads itself is different, which is why the pattern turns out to be very different from what it was before.

To this is worth adding the spring-summer collection of nylon straps. They retain the old type of weaving, but change the approach to color. If previously intertwined threads of two colors formed a single color field, now there are options with multi-colored stripes. For example, Apple calls the option in the photo below “yellow pollen.”

In the meantime, we were able to appreciate three color options in everyday life: “red”, “lake blue” and “pollen yellow” (in addition to the previously described black). They fit casual clothes and suggest the presence of some bright elements in clothing. Ideally, the same shades in other clothing items.

So this is, of course, an interesting task for fashionistas. But note that the colors do not look flashy or vulgar (for example, “wild berry” is much more universal option than any other type of pink straps). And “blue lake” is an excellent option for denim.

In addition, we note that when worn for a long time on the hand, nylon straps do not cause any discomfort. On the contrary, over time they take the shape of a hand - as if they were created especially for you. It's nice. And for those who do not plan to actively use the watch for sports, a nylon strap is a very good alternative to a silicone or Nike strap (their cost is identical - about 4,000 rubles at the time of writing).

These are, of course, summer decisions. However, they can also be relevant in the fall - you want to maintain a summer mood, even when it’s dark and slush outside.

New colors have also appeared for straps made of other materials. Moreover, along with the color, the surface texture was updated, so the straps began to feel different. A striking example is the yellow leather strap with a classic buckle.

First of all, it's actually three colors: external color- yellow, the inner surface is natural (dark beige) color, and the edges are gray. And secondly, the leather here is softer and more elastic than in the case of a brown strap and, especially, a black one (we wrote about them earlier). In addition, oddly enough, the buckle itself is different, although it cannot be said for the worse or for the better. She's just a little different.

As for the color itself, it is a little lighter and brighter than in the photos, without an orange tint. And it looks very cool - it gives you a summer mood and becomes a great accent when worn with neutral clothes.

In addition, back in the spring, regular sports straps appeared in the colors "smoky blue", "pollen yellow" and "flamingo pink", and the most widely updated line of Nike straps. “Light Violet/White”, “Purple Dust/Plum Haze”, “Orbit Blue/Gamma Blue” and “Obsidian/Black” added variety to the previously limited selection of strict shades.

Screen

The Apple Watch Series 3 screen size and resolution have not changed compared to the first and second generations. The watch is available in two display sizes: 38mm and 42mm. Accordingly, their resolution also differs: 272×340 and 312×390, respectively. We had a 42mm watch with a screen resolution of 312x390.

We conducted a detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments. Below is the conclusion of the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, Alexey Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a scratch-resistant glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface curved towards the edges. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, slightly better than Google Nexus 7 (2013)), therefore fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a lower speed than in the case of ordinary glass. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly better than those of Google screen Nexus 7 2013. For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens:

The screen of the Apple Watch Series 3 is slightly darker (brightness according to photographs is 105 versus 113 for the Nexus 7). There is no double reflection, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. When displaying the white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value we recorded was about 650 cd/m² (with bright backlight on the screen), the minimum was 60 cd/m² (the first level of adjustment, office lighting).

It’s worth making a reservation here: Apple promises brightness up to 1000 cd/m², but it’s impossible to verify this, because when measuring brightness, the light sensor is partially blocked and the brightness is automatically reduced, and it’s impossible to disable this parameter. So we couldn’t confirm the numbers promised by the manufacturer, but we have no reason not to trust Apple.

As already mentioned, automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor always works. The user can only make adjustments to the operation of this function by choosing one of three levels. At any brightness level there is modulation with a frequency of 60 Hz, but its amplitude is small, so flickering is not visible. Graphs of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) illustrate the above:

This screen uses an AMOLED matrix - active matrix organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B) in equal numbers, as confirmed by a fragment of a microphotograph:

For comparison, you can familiarize yourself with those used in mobile technology.

The spectra are typical for OLED - the primary color areas are well separated and appear as relatively narrow peaks:

However, there is also cross-mixing of components ( programmatically), so the coverage is not overly wide, but adjusted to the sRGB boundaries:

Accordingly, typical images (with sRGB coverage) on the Apple Watch screen have natural saturation. Unfortunately, color profiles are not supported (or transferred when images are copied to the watch), so even images with a wide color gamut will still appear as sRGB. The color temperature of the white and gray fields is approximately 7350 K, and the deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) is 4.4-4.7 units. Color balance is good. Black is just black from any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. The screen has excellent viewing angles with a much smaller drop in brightness when viewed from an angle compared to LCD screens, but at higher angles the whites fade noticeably to blue. Overall, the quality of the Apple Watch screen is very high.

New opportunities

The watch comes preloaded with watchOS 4.0 operating system. You can read about its main innovations in, and what is said there is true for all generations of Apple Watch. Let us remind you that even the very first generation is compatible with the latest OS. Here we will look at those functions and features that apply only to the Apple Watch Series 3 and are not available on older models.

So, perhaps, the main innovation of the Apple Watch Series 3, not counting the LTE connection, which is not yet available to Russian users, is constant and rather in-depth monitoring of cardiac activity. As Apple rightly notes, cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death today, especially among men. Moreover, their danger is that for quite a long time a person, already being unhealthy, may not feel any discomfort and, therefore, does not take any measures to prevent a heart attack or the like.

In addition, regular medical examinations in Russia are still not established, and obtaining health certificates is nothing more than a formality. And somehow it is not customary for us to go without any complaints and have our heart checked. Therefore, the importance of constant monitoring of heart function is difficult to overestimate. It is clear that this cannot be compared with diagnostics in medical centers and using professional equipment, and it is stupid to expect that a watch will immediately give us a diagnosis (although, who knows, maybe in 10 years we will live to see that). But Apple Watch Series 3 can alert you if it notices problems with your heart rate. And even if this is a mistake, it is better to be safe.

So let's take a closer look at how this happens.

While you're wearing Apple Watch Series 3, the watch automatically measures your heart rate every few minutes. At the same time, they correlate the information received with your current activity (which, of course, is reported by other sensors - the accelerometer and gyroscope), and if you sat still for 10 minutes, but your heart rate exceeded a specified threshold (by default it is 120 beats minute), the watch will warn you.

You can view or change settings in Watch app on iPhone by going to the “Pulse” section.

The watch also measures heart rate variability, which is the difference in time between two heartbeats. This figure should be small.

All your heart monitoring information is automatically exported to the Health app. There, in a visual form, you can see to what values and when your pulse rose, what the average pulse was for a certain period of time and other useful information.

In fact, among non-professional household devices, the Apple Watch Series 3 now collects and provides maximum information about the functioning of the heart. And, what is important, without any user effort. That is, you don’t have to run measurements, then do anything with the results, etc. You just wear the watch - and then see all the results in the application on your iPhone.

Another innovation of the Apple Watch Series 3 is the appearance of an altimeter. Thanks to it, the watch can measure the number of floors climbed and generally record your ascents and descents. Note that when everyday use The same information can also be collected by the iPhone—and the Health app lists the iPhone as a priority source. But, for example, on a hike or when playing sports, a watch will clearly be a more convenient tool.

And the last innovation, available only on Apple Watch Series 3: Siri can now talk through the watch speaker (and the sound is quite clear and loud) or through AirPods headphones. The manufacturer claims that this became possible thanks to a new, more powerful processor. Of course, it is difficult to call this an important innovation, but in certain situations it can really be useful.

Autonomous operation

As before, we do not have the tools to test battery life with any precision. Apple works Watch Series 3 - only subjective impressions. But if you rely on them, it turns out that Apple has done a really great job, and three days of work without recharging is already quite a reality for its watches.

Note that the first Apple Watch, updated to watchOS 4.0, worked for us for no more than two days. So there is a positive trend. Of course, the more intensively you use the watch, the faster it will drain, but if you use the Series 3 solely for notifications and viewing the time, you can safely count on three days.

conclusions

If we talk about the version without LTE, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a rather modest update. The vast majority of innovations reported by the manufacturer are related to watchOS 4, and not to the watch itself. Therefore, if you have an Apple Watch Series 2, then there is undoubtedly no reason to update. If you are the owner of an Apple Watch Series 1, then it all depends on whether you need the innovations that we noted in Series 2, and whether the watch with watchOS 4 slows down. The very first generation (which, let us recall, was functionally identical to the Series 1, but with a twice as slow SoC) there were slowdowns and “thoughtfulness”. So if you have the very first Apple Watch, then it’s worth upgrading, but if you have Series 1, you still need to think carefully.

Perhaps the main one Apple feature Watch Series 3 - serious monitoring of cardiac activity. And this is, perhaps, an important argument, especially if you are a man over 40. But the main thing is that this is a very productive signal to the entire industry and an attempt to answer the still pressing question: why do we need smartwatches at all?

Other innovations - the appearance of an altimeter and Siri voice response capabilities - can hardly be considered truly significant. But, strictly speaking, Apple does not offer to compare Series 3 and Series 2. official store Now only Series 3 and Series 1 are sold, so the third generation just replaced the second, adopting all its features (moisture protection, GPS) and adding a few of its own. This is probably a boring situation for reviewers and tech geeks; I wish the Series 3 were a more serious step forward. But, on the other hand, we can’t help but be glad that Apple is developing not only hardware, but also software, and even owners of models of previous generations can take advantage of the innovations in watchOS 4.

From the same opera, there are new straps, of which there are many (if you count all those released after the Apple Watch Series 2). They, like the operating system, are suitable for absolutely all Apple Watch models ever released. And for this you can even forgive the lack of updating the watch design. Yes, again, a bit boring, but it is fully compatible with all existing straps. Apple is clearly trying to convey a message to doubters: buy our watches now, they will be relevant for a long time. And to make it easier for them to make such a decision, the manufacturer has lowered prices for Series 1, so that the threshold for entry into the “Apple Watch owner’s club” has become lower than ever.

There are much fewer versions of the Apple Watch than the iPhone, but choosing a watch is still a non-trivial task. Series 4 or Series 3? More or less? Or maybe save money and take the good old Series 2? In fact, when Apple discontinued previous generations, it became easier to choose.

Due to the lack of eSIM support in Russia, the line of watches is further reduced: the Apple Watch in a steel case is only available in the version with a cellular module, so it is not officially supplied. In the end, you only have to choose between Series 4 and Series 3.

Available in both generations of Apple Watch special versions Nike+ watch. They have the same equipment as regular ones. Apple differences Watch Nike+ consists only of sports straps and exclusive dials matching the design of the watch.

Who should buy the Apple Watch Series 4

The latest generation of Apple Watch is worth buying for anyone who is not used to splurging on small things. - this is without a doubt a huge step forward. The watch benefits from a large and easy-to-read display, a thin body, as well as an advanced 64-bit processor and an abundance of new features such as haptic wheel feedback, ECG and fall detection.

The compact 40mm version is larger in screen size than the larger 42mm models of previous generations. And if previously large watches were considered men's, and small watches were considered women's, now such a division is no longer relevant. Series 4 in a 40mm case can be confidently called universal, and the 44mm version can only be recommended to fans of large watches.

Who should buy the Apple Watch Series 3

The main trump card of the Apple Watch is its price. The watch will cost almost 10,000 rubles less, which makes it an ideal option for those who want to save money. At the same time, the watch has all the necessary features, including water resistance, GPS, altimeter, as well as a more powerful processor compared to previous generations and improved battery life.

Apple Watch Series 3 in a 38 mm case is suitable for those with thin wrists, 42 mm is the choice of those who need a large watch and good screen readability. Apple recommends the first for wrists with a girth from 13 to 20 cm, the second - for wrists with a girth from 14 to 21 cm.

We all loved this smart Apple Watch, but even the most devoted fans of this manufacturer are already confused about the difference between series 1, 2 and 3. If there are practically no external differences and the first series is similar to the third, then the most important changes lie inside. And the characteristics may differ significantly. Let's try to figure out what the difference is and which watch is right for you.

To clearly and clearly see what the difference is, we will create a table where we compare 1, 2 and 3 series according to their characteristics. And then we’ll tell you about all the differences in more detail.

As we can see from the table, with each series the watches became better, faster and smarter. If in the first watch there was not enough processor power and the watch could freeze, then in the second series they made a dual-core processor.

External smart view Apple watch:

The iWatch Series 1 was released in four colors (Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and Space Gray). 2 types of sizes - 38 and 42 mm. The body is made of aluminum.

Apple Watch Series 2 has become a little thicker (almost a millimeter), the color scheme remains the same. But in this series, in addition to aluminum, stainless steel and ceramics are used. And also a sports series with a bright design appeared - Nike + with special sports functions.

Watch Series 3. Same case with the same colors. Similar to Watch 2 in design and color.

Apple watch display.

The first and second and even the third series did not undergo significant differences in the display. All watch series use OLED technology. Screen brightness. In Apple Watch 2nd and 3rd generations, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.

Water protection.

Series 2 and 3 can be safely immersed in water to a depth of 50 meters and nothing will happen to them. In the third series, water training appeared, so you can safely go to the pool and set records in 50 and 100 meter swims. But don't forget to click on the special drop icon to activate the waterproof mode. After water procedures, the watch itself will push out excess water. The very first model could only withstand splashes and is afraid of immersion in water.

Processor and memory.

In the first watch, the main drawback was a rather weak processor, which was developed by Apple and was called S1. This is a single-core processor with a frequency of 520 MHz. Its power is barely enough for applications and comfortable work. In the second and third series, this drawback was taken into account and a new dual-core processor was created, which was called S2. Random access memory 512 MB turned out to be enough for any tasks and applications, so both in the first and in the second watch the amount of RAM is the same. Due to new features and more resource-intensive applications in the third series, the memory capacity was increased to 768MB.

With GPS or not?

Apple Watch 1 is completely dependent on the iPhone and therefore they used data from the smartphone. Apple has equipped the second and third Watch with a GPS module - now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch. Feel free to go for a walk and leave your phone at home. Running with a smartphone is also not convenient, so GPS is a very important improvement in series 2 and 3.

Battery in a watch.

This is the main drawback of perhaps all watches and the Watch is no exception. Fit big battery V small body does not seem possible. The battery life of the watch will only last for a day, and if you do not charge it before bed, you will only be able to use the watch for a couple of hours the next day. In the second and third series there is a slight increase in battery capacity. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second and third generations of watches to work no less than the previous one, the battery had to be slightly larger.

What is the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Most recently, Apple presented the 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on whole year and what has changed since Watch Series 2? This time we will do without a comparison table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Considering the fact that the dimensions have remained virtually unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So, what's new in the 2017 Apple Watch 3?

Is there a version with LTE now? exactly this important difference. True, it is absolutely useless for us - this function does not work in Russia yet, although telecom operators are already thinking about introducing it in Russia. The fact is that the watch uses a built-in SIM card - our operators do not yet provide such services and capabilities.

  1. Design element. By the way, the version with LTE has one fundamental difference in terms of design - the scroll wheel now has a red dot! Distinctive feature Watch Series 3 LTE - red scroll wheel
  2. CPU. Of course, the Apple Watch Series 3 received a new S3 processor (which is said to be 70% faster than the Series 2), as well as a special microchip for wireless communication - W2 (similar to that used in AirPods).
  3. RAM. The RAM value also increased to 768 MB (in the second generation it was 512 MB).
  4. Inner memory. For the version without LTE, nothing has changed, the size internal storage is still 8 GB. But Series 3 with a SIM card will receive an increased volume - 16 GB.
  5. Barometric altimeter. Now the watch can count how many floors you have ascended or descended.
  6. Bluetooth 4.2. The blue tooth version has become a little higher (in Series 2 - Bluetooth 4.0). What's the plus? Data transfer speed increases. Considering that a lot of data is first downloaded to the iPhone, and then via Bluetooth to the Apple Watch, this will obviously not be superfluous. Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. Edition models are available only in the series 2 version - waterproof, with a built-in GPS / GLONASS receiver, integrated accelerometer and gyroscope.

Apple Watch characteristics

The conversation about the characteristics of the Apple Watch can be divided into two large parts - their specifications, and their application possibilities. In Apple devices, these two components are so tightly fused that it is often simply impossible to separate what concerns the properties and qualities of the hardware, and what relates, rather, to the capabilities provided by the device. Be that as it may, the Apple watch is an electronic device, the operation of which is based on a processor that uses battery power and uses various sensors, sensors and memory modules.

Physical parameters of the Apple Watch

Apple watches are available with display diagonals of 38 mm and 42 mm, which determines dimensions buildings. Two standard sizes can be conditionally considered male - for larger hands, and female, having, firstly, smaller sizes, and, secondly, less weight.

Apple Watch case materials

The Apple Watch is available in three versions depending on the materials from which the device cases are made. Apple Watch series 1 is available in durable anodized aluminum cases in four color options - Silver, Gold, Rose Gold Pink gold") and Space Gray. The Apple Watch series 2 has both watches in aluminum cases and those with a polished steel case in a shiny light color or blackened metal color. The cases of the Apple Watch Edition series models are made of white ceramic .

Apple Watch Built-in Memory

Apple Watches are available in one version with built-in 4Gb memory, which somewhat simplifies the choice and allows you to focus on choosing an Apple Watch model based on appearance, the options of which are designed to suit a wide range of user needs. The provision of memory is not the main characteristic of the device, since in most cases it is supposed to be used in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad, which have a wide range of models in memory size from 16GB to 256Gb. Own memory Apple Watch is required mainly when using the watch offline to be able to save media files and data from applications installed on the device.

Apple Watch wireless modules

All Apple Watch models are equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and NFC modules. Bluetooth is used to communicate with iPhone, headsets and all other peripherals. NFC allows you to use Apple Watch in Apple Pay contactless payment systems.

Contacts with outside world The Apple Watch operates via an iPhone, to which it connects via Bluetooth. This solution made it possible to ensure a sufficiently long operating time on a single battery charge, and to increase the actual autonomy of the Apple Watch to a nominal 24 hours.

Apple Watch Battery

The Apple Watch battery is made of cellular architecture using lithium-ion technology and, despite its small size, is capable of providing the Apple Watch with energy for several days of battery life in standby mode without recharging. Of course, the operating time before the next battery charge depends mainly on the mode of use of the device and may differ significantly from that stated by the manufacturer in the characteristics of the model.

Not the last parameter of the battery characteristics is the time required to charge it. It would be very sad if you had to spend 5-7 hours charging the battery, as was the case with some tablet models. However, to the delight of fans of Apple technology, the Apple Watch is fully charged to 80% in an hour and a half, and in 2.5 hours to 100%.

The small dimensions of the Apple Watch dictate its limitations on the size and, accordingly, the battery capacity. The numerical parameters of the battery capacity are not even as interesting as the battery life values, which are quite impressive for the Apple Watch - 18 hours of operation on a single charge at normal use. This result seems surprising, but if you carefully consider what the Apple Watch requires energy for, its high autonomy becomes clear. Unlike smartphones and tablets, the main mode of use of which is to display information on the display, Apple Watch spends most of the time in standby mode, in which the device's display consumes virtually no battery power.

Another active consumer of battery energy in smartphones is all communication modules without exception - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GSM, LTE, GPS, NFC. Apple Watch is equipped with only a few of them, two of which can be classified as the most modest - Bluetooth and NFC. The remaining consumers of battery power are connected as needed for a short time to perform a specific task and are turned off when it is completed. To connect to the Internet, watches mainly use a smartphone as a communication bridge, receiving information from the smartphone via a Bluetooth channel. As a result, it turns out that the Apple Watch, when connected to the network, consumes a minimum of energy from its own battery. As for NFC, it is hardly possible to seriously talk about its frequent use and, especially, long-term use. In addition, the communication range according to the NFC standard is several centimeters, which does not require high signal power and, therefore, energy consumption.

Apple Watch Sensors

The Apple Watch is equipped with a built-in heart rate sensor, which is located on the bottom surface of the watch and reads blood flow parameters in the vessels of the wrist.

The three-axis gyroscope provides the watch processor with information about changes in the position of the Apple Watch in space and is responsible for the initial data for calculating the owner’s motor activity.

The built-in accelerometer allows you to determine the speed of movement, which, in combination with gyroscope data, makes it possible to calculate the physical activity received by the user both in terms of duration and intensity. Software convert the information received from sensors into a human-readable form of the number of calories - an energy indicator that can be compared with the number of calories consumed from food.

Apple Watch series 2 models are additionally equipped with a built-in GPS / GLONASS module, which ensures autonomous operation of the watch in navigator and GPS tracker mode and significantly expands the functionality of the device without constant connection with the iPhone.

In addition to its own sensors found in the Apple Watch, the device processor also receives information from sensors and iPhone sensors, some of which are duplicated own information, but in general they seriously expand the information field for calculations. Programmatic access hours to the hardware capabilities of a smartphone creates a feeling of incredible power that is extremely small, by any standards, electronic gadget. However, we should not forget that the smartphone itself uses the power of the Internet with its servers, routers, and millions of kilometers of optical and copper cables. The Apple Watch, from the point of view of its location in the network structure, is the final device that concentrates and conveys to a person the capabilities of the entire information system.

Apple Watch as a separate device - without iPhone and iPad.

The Apple Watch is certainly part of the ecosystem the company has been building over the past few years. However, like other Apple products, the watch can be used separately from the iPhone, iPad, and even from the Internet.

The Apple Watch is designed as a stand-alone device that has additional features in combination with other Apple gadgets, primarily the iPhone. Separated from the Apple ecosystem, watches lose some of their capabilities, but retain most of the meanings that the company puts into them. Let's list the main ones.

The Apple Watch is certainly a stylish accessory, its appearance and properties bright element image sign systems are saved in a completely offline mode of use - without an iPhone or an Internet connection.

Being a complex electronic device, the Apple Watch, to some extent, still remains a chronometer, the main function of which is to display the time. In this capacity, the Apple Watch is perhaps the best electronic timepiece created in all previous years. Taking advantage of the stunning display and powerful graphics system The Apple Watch is capable of displaying time in every format imaginable. In addition, the functions of a timer, stopwatch, and alarm clock give the Apple Watch completeness and independence precisely as a watch - a device that gives us time references.

The Apple Watch's medical and fitness features rely heavily on its ability to monitor heart rate, and the Apple Watch does not require any additional symbionts to do this.

The addition of a GPS/GLONASS module to the Apple Watch series 2 adds another important autonomous option - without connecting to other gadgets in the Apple ecosystem, using the watch to navigate in space, search for optimal routes and record the path traveled. Even if the Apple Watch lacked all other functions, only the functionality of a full-fledged navigator could make sense of the idea of buying an Apple Watch without owning an iPhone and without intending to create a smartphone-smartwatch system.

Apple Watch application

The functionality built into Apple watches suggests a wide range of applications. highest degree unusual device. Apple Watch's own sensors combined with the ability to use the entire arsenal of software and hardware iPhone resources make a small gadget a universal information tool. By taking a quick glance at the clock, as we did to find out the time, you can now get information not only about what time it is, but also about the weather forecast, exchange rates, kilometers traveled per day, week, month, and much more.

Possibilities for flexible customization of not only the background color and format for presenting time and other data, but also the choice of important information for the user that will be presented on the main page Apple screen Watch creates endless options for using Apple watches. At the presentation of the device, the company offered some of them, but it is unlikely that users will limit themselves to the recommended set. Apple Watch provides a wide field for experimentation - everyone can, based on their needs and ideas about feasibility, configure Apple Watch as they see fit and change the settings at any time.

Of course, first of all, the Apple Watch is a stylish accessory, the desire to buy which is supported by its functionality. In this capacity, Apple watches claim to be a leader in reviving the tradition of wearing watches on the wrist. Let us remember that once upon a time watches had a very utilitarian meaning - displaying time. But the entire evolution of personal timepieces walks along the line between functional utility and the ability to decorate. In recent years, the ability of traditional wristwatches to tell time has almost completely faded into the background and they are mainly a status accessory. Apple Watch returns the role of a useful device to wristwatches, capable of not only emphasizing the wealth of the owner, but also expanding his capabilities.

If you carefully analyze the Apple Watch's own capabilities, you will notice that, strictly speaking, they are not a communicator in themselves. Rather, the Apple Watch serves as a remote monitor - from the meaning of “display”, for the iPhone, which in many cases is no longer necessary to take out. By setting up email notifications on the home screen of Apple Watch, you can take a quick glance at the watch display to see when you receive new emails. The same goes for SMS messages and most other communication channels. This is the main role assigned to the Apple watch by the developers.

The sports and medical use of the Apple Watch does not yet have an established practice, but it is quite possible that over time we will all master this area of application together with the support of application developers and monitoring our own condition will become a matter of course. It can be assumed that the obvious possibilities for collecting information about the owner’s physical activity, stress on the body and current condition will be in wide demand not only for medical, but also for fitness purposes.

Apple Watch price

The line of Apple Watch models creates a choice based on appearance - size, material and color of the watch case, which is reflected in the price of the device. The minimum price for an Apple Watch in the United States is $349.00 for the junior model, the Apple Watch Sport, with an anodized aluminum case and a 38mm display.

Increasing the size of the display and, accordingly, the dimensions of the case, adds $50.00 to the price of the watch - Apple Watch Sport 42mm will cost $399.00 when purchased in the United States Apple stores Store. Upgrading to the polished steel Apple Watch series will add $200.00 to the price - the Apple Watch Stainless Stell costs $549.00 and $599.00 for the 38mm and 42mm models, respectively.

The choice of strap also affects the price of the watch - the most inexpensive plastic straps come with sports series watches. Leather straps are a little more expensive and metal bracelets have the highest price. So, depending on the chosen strap, Apple Watch series watches in a steel case with a 42mm display cost from $599.00 to $1099.00.

The Apple Watch Edition in a gold case stands apart in the price range. The price of the Apple Gold Watch starts at $10,000.00 and is determined by the goal of adding appeal to the device as a luxury item.

Apple's pricing policy for the Apple Watch is aimed at making the device as widely available around the world as possible. Apple Watch, the prices for which the company sets based on the general price level in the sales region, according to the company’s marketers’ plan, should gradually become a cult device, and then turn into a must-have accessory. Of course, Apple won't sell watches for $30 a pair, but Apple time The Watch will become widely available through the secondary market. The annual update of models contributes to the formation of a secondary market, prices on which are several times lower than retail prices for new products. However, we don’t have to think about the secondary market for Apple Watches in the coming years - most likely, the watch will remain within the family and be passed on to children. This can be expected based on the high quality of Apple products and the experience of distributing the iPhone in the first few years after their release to the mass market.

The first wave of Apple Watches is addressed primarily to those who are willing to spend money to be among the first users of the new product. Therefore, one should not be surprised at the relatively high Apple price Watch - they are not essential items. The desire to buy an Apple Watch is dictated rather by curiosity, the desire to get acquainted with a new product and, perhaps, the hope of bringing the future a little closer, about which books are written and films are made.

The Apple iWatch smart watch made a splash in the electronics market in 2015. The company presented new gadgets in the fall, and a few months later they went on sale. Buyers were already familiar with smart watches before, but the American manufacturer made the device not only high-quality and functional, but also impeccably beautiful. It was the design that largely influenced the rapid growth of popularity.

As for the cost, it differs depending on certain criteria. It is influenced by the characteristics of the hardware, the size and coating of the display, the quality of the material of the strap, case, etc. For example, an Apple iWatch Sport (38 mm) will cost the buyer approximately $350. They are equipped with an aluminum case and a silicone strap. The same model, but with a 48 mm screen, will cost $50 more. The classic series of smartwatches is up for sale at a price that exceeds the cost of the sports collection by $200 (basic configuration). These numbers may increase depending on the strap used. IN model range classics are presented, the price of which starts at $1,000. The Edition collection has a gold version. Buyers will have to pay more than 10,000 for it.

Getting to know the gadget from Apple

Since the beginning of smartwatch production, three main lines have been distinguished:

  • Watch Sport is the cheap version.
  • Watch - middle segment.
  • Watch Edition - premium models.

There are two sizes of Apple iWatch display available to the buyer: 42 mm and 38 mm. The external design of gadgets is striking in its diversity. For the first time, the line features a large number of design modifications. Buyers will have no problems with choice. The manufacturer also offers six types of housing. If desired, you can choose dark gray and classic shades of steel, the same palette of aluminum, as well as gold (standard tone and pink).

The company paid special attention to straps. The watches are equipped with leather, metal or silicone models. For expensive items, the manufacturer offers straps made of precious metals. Their design is well thought out, making them easily adaptable to any customer. The watch uses only removable straps, so replacement will not be a problem.

Apple Watch series

IN classic version smart iWatch Apple presents the user with a large assortment of straps, consisting of 20 options. For the production of the case, a high-quality and reliable material was chosen - stainless steel. For protection purposes, a sapphire layer is applied. As for the display, the series includes classic models with a 38 and 42 mm screen.

Apple iWatch Sport Series

The sports series is considered the most affordable of the options offered by the American company. To reduce costs, the manufacturer chose an aluminum body. There is no sapphire layer. The developers replaced it with glass with an increased level of strength. When compared with the classic series, the display of the Sport watch is inferior in characteristics. He is more susceptible mechanical damage. Over time, the owner may notice a formation minor scratches, which will cause discomfort when using the gadget.

In design, these models are in no way inferior to other series. The variety of straps in the model range is limited to 10 options. The only drawback is the use of cheaper materials, which affects the quality. However, this is only noticeable when examining Apple products, and compared to other brands it still remains at a high level.

Features of the Edition collection

For people who value their high status, the premium series - iWatch Apple Edition - is ideal. The watches in this collection look very luxurious. For them, the manufacturer selected straps made of precious metals (rose and yellow gold). The same material is used for the body. The differences from other series are not only this. This line uses a unique design, complemented by innovative technologies. The hardware of the Edition collection gadgets is a cut above. The display dimensions are standard and have a sapphire coating.

iWatch or Watch

Often buyers are alarmed that in the name of the watch the word iWatch is replaced with Watch. Suspicions arise - is this a fake? Definitely not! The first variant of the name (iWatch) was used in the models during the presentation of the concept. However, after the start of large-scale sales between the companies - the American Apple and the Swiss Swatch - a stumbling block appeared. The reason for this was the consonance of the words used in the name of the watch. At a time when only Apple iWatch gadgets were gaining momentum, the Swedes had already released the ISwatch line. The similarity was obvious, so the Americans had to concede on the principle of superiority.

Features of working with smart watches

What subtleties does a user need to know when working with Apple smartwatches? Their peculiarity is that gadgets are not independent devices. The clock is controlled via Cell phones iPhone. It is important to note that synchronization is only possible with smartphones version 5 and higher. Earlier models do not support this function.

When working with the iWatch Apple iPhone acts as a control console. Without it, applications will not function. Smart watch will turn into simple ones that will only show the current time. Once these two devices are synchronized, the user has access to a large number software We are talking about sports programs, as well as applications that allow you to answer incoming call or send SMS messages. Control is carried out by voice. Communication between two devices is provided via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

A significant advantage is that the manufacturer adapts its gadgets to the market. For example, buyers in the Russian Federation purchase watches with the Russian language installed. The same models are also supplied to neighboring countries. However, you can observe some differences from the American version. They consist of using icons instead of labels. This decision was made due to small size a screen that did not contain all the information in Russian.

Disadvantages include the lack of synchronization with Apple tablets iPad. Also, the watch will not work with phones based on Windows Phone and Android OS. It is for this reason that, when deciding to purchase a smartwatch from an American company, you must simultaneously select an iPhone.

Screen Features at a Glance

As mentioned above, the range of first-generation Apple Watch smartwatches includes models with different display sizes. Of course, this affects the characteristics. When a 38 mm screen is used, information will be displayed with a resolution of 340 × 272 px. The picture quality is excellent, since with such dimensions the pixel density was 290 ppi. Most often, models are chosen for people with small hands, for example children and women.

The resolution of the 48mm display is already higher. Information is displayed in the size of 390 × 312 pixels. The number of pixels has also increased. In large watches it is equal to 302 ррі.

The Apple iWatch 2 (second generation) was positioned as a sports model, so the manufacturer used GPS. The display characteristics have become significantly higher - the brightness range has increased. Thanks to these changes, using the gadget has become more convenient. This is especially noticeable on the street in sunny weather. The manufacturer also worked on the level of moisture resistance. Now users can dive with the watch to a depth of up to 50 meters.

To control the gadget, the developers installed the Digital Crown. This is a special wheel that is used to scroll through the menu or zoom in/out on a picture. The screen supports only one touch, gesture control and is equipped with Force Touch technology. There is also a button on the case. It is located under the wheel and is intended to return to the main menu. Double clicking on it will activate Apple system Pay.

The developers have installed several desktop themes on the watch. They already have wallpaper, clock type and date display selected.

Hardware platform

The first generation of Apple smartwatches used the original S1 processor. In order to ensure communication with a smartphone, a Taptic Engine vibration module is installed. But the Apple iWatch 2 received an updated chipset. Its productivity is twice that. The S2 model operates on the basis of two computing modules.

The cost-effectiveness of using built-in memory storage on watches is a controversial issue. Many users claim that there was no obvious need for this, since all files can be saved on a smartphone. However, the watch has 8 gigabytes of memory. It is divided into several blocks. 2 GB storage was used for music tracks, 75 MB for photos. The rest of the space is reserved for application files.

Battery Specifications

Buyers who purchase an Apple iWatch are interested in battery life. And such interest is completely justified. Given the great functionality, this question becomes quite relevant.

According to the manufacturer, the gadget will work for about 12-18 hours under moderate load. Moreover, this time corresponds to both the first and second generation of watches. The developers installed a built-in battery. Its capacity was 205 milliamps per hour. It will take about 2.5 hours to restore a full charge. This is done with a special wireless device Magsafe. The connection is made using the magnetic principle.
