How to choose an iPad? A practical guide to Apple tablets. iPad line from first to last: all iPad models, comparison and prices

Today, probably everyone knows what an iPad is. Although not many people know how this miracle device differs from a regular tablet. Therefore, the question rightly arises - what is better to choose?

In this article, we will clarify the essence of the iPad and identify its differences from similar devices from other manufacturers. First, let’s say that an iPad and a tablet are one and the same. Only the product from the Apple company became the first on the market and is still considered the most advanced in terms of technical characteristics.

A tablet is a technical gadget that is larger in size than a smartphone. It is quite thin and has a display with a touch mechanism. The general name for this product category is tablet.

Devices of this type are controlled by simple touches on the screen, physical keys are not used. It is possible to connect a keyboard, but usually it is not included in the simple configuration.

“Tablets” operate on the basis of an operating system capable of supporting lightweight programs. The most common operating systems are Android and iOS. The iPad is based on the latter.

How does an Apple tablet differ from its competitors? What is better to buy - an iPad, despite the high price, or a cheaper option? Detailed characteristics Apple product presented in this article will help you decide and make the right choice.

This device is the latest format mobile computers. It made consumers look at tablets differently and become seriously interested in them.

A tablet is a small item, but a full-fledged computer. It is equipped with a display with a touch mechanism, its own operating system and other useful attributes typical of modern gadgets.

iPad can be used to work in office programs, surf the net, download content, play games and many other tasks. In general, the functionality is exactly the same as that of modern PCs/laptops. We briefly covered the iPad and what this mysterious device is.

By the way, many people confuse the names iPad and iPod, considering them identical. In fact, the difference between an iPod and a tablet is fundamental. This is just a player with the corresponding functions.

History of the iPad

Apple began developing the tablet back in 1983. But then the information was classified and was leaked to the general public only in 2002.

The consumer was expecting a miracle, since the concept of the device promised a lot. But the wait dragged on for another 4 years, when the developer had already officially announced the development of a tablet with touch display. The approximate date of entry into the market - 2007 - was also announced then. However, the first line of iPads came out only in 2010. The product was presented by the head of Apple himself.

As expected, the device aroused increased interest. In the first day, more than 300 thousand units of the product were sold, and more than a million programs created for the tablet were downloaded from the store. One million copies were sold in just under a month.

A year later, the apple company presented its second line. Its representatives have become thinner, sleeker, lighter. Sales were again strong.

A year later, the release of third-generation tablets followed, and so on.

Today the world has seen models such as mini and Pro - unique in their kind. They are tailored to the specific needs of users - the desire to have a device of small dimensions so that it can be easily carried in a pocket, or to have a gadget with a large display.

So, we hope that now all those who did not know about the iPad, what it is, have resolved this issue for themselves. Almost everyone knows about iPad today, but few are aware of the differences between this device and Android gadgets.

iPad benefits

The device is more stable and easier to use than any other tablet. But its biggest advantage is the presence in the store of more than half a million programs available for download. More than half of the software is developed directly for the iPad, the rest is able to function in compatibility mode.

The Apple company individually approves any program before release, making the process of viruses penetrating its gadgets as difficult as possible.

The iOS operating system is intuitive clear interface. It is an ideal environment for developing applications because its functions are easy to understand. That's why many audiences/developers like it so much.

iPad: cons

Despite the long experience of users, there is a common complaint about one problem, namely the limit of customization. But this inconvenience can be circumvented by jailbreaking your device.

On the one hand, it’s great that any program is checked/approved by Apple before being displayed in the store. However, some useful software That's how it goes with the block.

Also, the iPad is not able to expand memory through a flash drive. Therefore, if the limit runs out, nothing can be done about it.

Another negative point is the inability to watch flash videos. Consequently, it is impossible to see the clips online on many resources. Although, today the HTML5 compatibility format is increasingly being used, so the problem can be considered solved.

iPad is expensive. At the start of sales of the first line, this was a powerful side, but today it is better to purchase a new generation product from any other company. This applies to gadgets with 7-inch displays and excellent power. The cost of such a device will be significantly lower than, for example, an iPad mini.

Now let’s turn to the characteristics of the iPad’s main competitors – Android tablets.

Android devices: pros

The biggest advantage is the wide variety from famous brands and not really. Also, devices can be premium and economy class. The customization possibilities are also endless.

The development of the Google store has reached large proportions in recent years. And today there is an extensive selection of programs that are not inferior to those presented in the AppleStore. Although some of them are not yet optimized for tablets. However, the growing number of interesting programs provides opportunities for selection based on size/specifics/cost.

The presence of real multitasking is the cardinal Android difference, which was until recently. But today this technology is also implemented on iOS. Its essence lies in the fact that when you open one program, the others can function in the background.

And finally, a big plus of tablets from any other manufacturers is much more low price. The cost of such products can be very affordable, and any user can afford the gadget.

Android tablets: disadvantages

The operating system is not as simple and understandable in practical use as iOS from the Apple company. But over time you get used to it.

Although the Google store today offers a huge number of programs, most of them are not optimized for tablets. Before uploading to the resource, the company does not check the software for this item. Of course, the risk of catching a virus for users in this case increases.

conclusions

Even after a detailed analysis, it will be difficult to say for sure which tablets are better. In order to somehow limit the selection criteria, we outline the main points:

  • Tablet - common name large number devices with displays with touch technology from various manufacturers. iPad is the same tablet, but from Apple. Although a survey of American residents showed that not everyone knows about this, believing that iPad is the general name for all “tablets.”
  • iPads operate on the iOS operating system, which has an excellent interface and colorful display.
  • This tablet is easier to use and more stable than competing products.
  • Apple devices are still in the lead when we're talking about about useful and accessible applications. Android gadgets can't boast yet a huge amount software tailored to the needs of tablets. However, with time, things will probably get better.
  • In terms of hardware, Android is a good choice for those who appreciate a fast processor, powerful cameras and easily expandable memory.

Review of the Apple iPad tablet (2017)

The new inexpensive iPad for the mass consumer is criticized by many for its simplicity, but all the swearing ends as soon as you tell your interlocutor the price. For 25,000 rubles, this is the best basic tablet on the market...

Design, construction

Critics say: this is it old Air, it's an old tablet, nothing new! Apple was absolutely stunned to roll out such a balalaika in 2017! You don’t have to answer anything here, but you can talk about the reasons why the iPad was born.

Firstly, if you look at the tablet market, nothing revolutionary has really happened here in recent years - the tablet has turned into a kind of microwave oven, household appliance for watching TV series in bed, although I manage to work fully with using iPad Pro with keyboard. If smartphones have acquired curved OLEDs, dual cameras, codecs for lossless sound transmission, then tablets have become thinner, lighter, more productive, support for smart styluses has appeared, but that’s all progress. People don't need more! People are not ready to change tablets every year, and many are still happy with theirs iPad Air or even a second generation iPad.

It turns out that the revolution seems to be unnecessary.

Secondly, the need for tablets still remains. They are bought both for educational purposes and for corporate purposes - you will probably pass by the iPad, but the director of some private school, looking at the price, may think: “Shouldn’t I buy about twenty of these tablets for teachers so that Did anyone get confused about the schedule?” After all, everyone knows that iPads are hard-to-kill things, easy to administer, easy to learn for both the older generation (teachers) and the younger group (students). If the iPad Pro is in a row Russian companies purchased for top management, then simple iPad you can safely buy for mid-level employees - please work on business trips, receive notifications, do everything as expected.

Thirdly, Apple is squeezing all the juice out of a once-created design - whether this is good or bad is difficult to judge from the outside. From an economic point of view, this is very good for the company; the life cycle of the products is maximum, and there is no need to waste human resources on developing designs for inexpensive devices. You take a good old one, equip it with a “new” processor, and you’re done. Apple understands everything about the microwave, about the fact that modern electronic devices are no longer an image, not a status, not an indicator, but simply a tool - that’s why we see the iPad 2017 in the form of an old tablet.

Finally, indirectly, this is also a means to combat the secondary market - on Avito for 25,000 rubles you can buy an excellent pig in a poke, you will never understand whether the one in front of you is a drowned man or a normal iPad. And this is where our iPad comes into play - rather than taking something unclear, it’s better to buy a budget, but understandable thing.

The preamble was necessary, now let's talk about the 2017 iPad. The aluminum body is almost the same as the Air, covers for previous generations fit, the cutouts on the side may slightly mismatch, but this is not so bad. On the bottom there is a Lightning connector, on the left and right there are holes for loud speakers, it is very convenient to watch movies and TV series without headphones. Listen to music in the hotel too. On the right side there are volume buttons, on the back there is a camera lens, there is no flash. On top there is a power button, a 3.5 mm jack, the Wi-Fi + Cellular version has a plastic insert covering the antenna. Another one distinguishing feature, on the right side at the bottom there is a slot for a nanoSIM memory card. Interestingly, this version supports Apple SIM (“SIM” is built-in), which is great if you travel often. The principle is simple: right at the airport, without going to operators, you can choose the same operator, tariff, pay, and immediately connect to the network. It’s interesting that similar functionality was left in the budget tablet – aimed at older people. For example, my friend’s parents fly to Berlin at least a couple of times a month to visit and constantly experience problems with communication - this is where I can recommend a tablet, where you don’t need special knowledge of the language and you don’t have to look for an operator’s salon.

The tablet is available in three colors: silver, gold, gray space».

There are several modifications, you can choose memory, 32 or 128 GB, color, model with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular. The price range is from 24,990 to 41,990 rubles, since the iPad is not a device for photo and video shooting, for a number of tasks (or for parents) you can safely choose a model with 32 GB of memory, and then decide whether cellular capabilities are needed or not.

In terms of design, the iPad doesn’t look like a dinosaur next to other Apple technology, the tablet is like a tablet, nothing more. The “gray space” version is good, as always.

I almost forgot, there is a lens above the screen FaceTime cameras, below the display – touch sensor ID, with its help you can activate the screen and make purchases on the Internet or in applications.

Exact dimensions – 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm, weight – 469 grams. The Lightning connector is used for charging and data transfer.

Display

Retina display, resolution 2048 x 1536 pixels, 9.7-inch diagonal, IPS, LED-backlit, with oleophobic coating, quite normal screen for most tasks. If you connect a case with a Bluetooth keyboard, you can easily work with documents or mail, if you take a case with a stand, you can watch Twin Peaks while lying in bed and connecting AirPods. By the way, I highly recommend using the device with AirPods; the tablet is in your bag, the headphones are in your ears, you can stop the track by touching it, and rewind it using Siri.

Compare screen budget iPad with an iPad Pro display of the same diagonal there is no point - yes, in iPad display simpler, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

Performance

The Apple A9 processor with an M9 coprocessor is used. Let me remind you that this processor is already two years old, it is used in the iPhone 6S/6S Plus, iPhone SE. All programs from the iPad Pro were transferred and started working, the tablet quickly copes with searching in mail, where there are a LOT of letters, modern games work, I have nothing to complain about. iPad owners With 32 GB, I advise you to make more active use of iCloud capabilities. The tablet has iOS 10 with all updates installed.

A little more about wireless interfaces:

Wi-Fi model:

  • Bluetooth 4.2 technology

Wi-Fi + Cellular model:

  • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac); two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz); HT80 with MIMO technology
  • Bluetooth 4.2 technology
  • UMTS/HSPA/ HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
  • CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900 MHz)
  • LTE (bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 38, 39, 40, 41)
  • Supports Apple SIM

In addition, the following are supported:

  • Digital compass
  • Assisted GPS and GLONASS for Wi-Fi + Cellular version
  • iBeacon precise location function (works in several stores in Moscow)

The tablet can be used to make audio-video calls via FaceTime, I checked that the call quality is excellent even in the city, although it would be better to have LTE. As I already said, Apple Pay supported, you can pay in various services using your fingerprint.

Working hours

The stated operating time is about 10 hours; the included power supply and cable allow you to charge the tablet in about three and a half to four hours. To speed up the process, you can take a power supply from large iPad Pro. The operating time corresponds to the stated one; if you watch the video all the time on a flight to Beijing, the tablet will not sit down.

Camera

An 8 MP camera is installed with autofocus, support for Live Photos, HDR, touch focusing, and records video in HD. Front camera 1.2 MP. Naturally, there is little point in using the main camera for artistic photographs, but here's how Notebook it works great, the quality is good. It’s interesting that the budget device also has well-implemented panoramic photography; they also retained the five-element lens; I was pleased with the speed of operation. Let me remind you that in any iOS device you can use the volume buttons to take a photo, the iPad is no exception - so, immediately after pressing it, a frame is created. Fast!

conclusions

There is such a concept of “basic” clothing, these are T-shirts and other things necessary for any person. All the time using iPad This word never left me - this is exactly the basic tablet for any person who just needs an inexpensive and understandable tablet, without any bells and whistles (see iPad Pro), well made in terms of hardware and software. Yes, for 25,000 rubles you can buy a dozen Chinese tablets, glue them together with glue and get, for example, a meter tablet for your home, for your family, but here comes the well-known saying about “we are not rich enough to buy cheap things.”

If you buy, I would recommend either the simplest version, 32 GB, without a SIM card, or 32 GB with a SIM card. If you travel often, an Apple SIM will come in handy. The 128 GB version is more expensive and less interesting (subjective opinion). Don’t forget that there are now a bunch of different Apple-certified Lightning flash drives on sale, so you can buy an accessory to watch TV series - take it off your computer, insert it into your tablet during the flight, watch it, then put the flash drive in your pocket. That's why I recommend the 32 GB version.

It only remains to add that the iPad is a good purchase in a variety of cases. Are you looking for a convenient remote control for smart home, you want to buy your dad or mom a “reader” with many functions, you want to equip your cafe with a convenient screen for the person at the cash register - in all these cases, the iPad is indispensable.

We study the most cheap tablet Apple

Unexpectedly for everyone, Apple released a new iPad - without loud presentations or other fanfare. True, it can be a stretch to call it new: there are no technical innovations here, and most of the characteristics correspond to the iPad and iPhone of previous generations. Therefore, perhaps the most interesting feature model should consider its price. In Russian Apple online store the new iPad is sold for 25 thousand rubles for the minimum configuration. For comparison, the younger version of the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display costs 45 thousand rubles. So is it worth overpaying 20 thousand? We decided to figure it out.

It's no secret that the tablet market has been in decline in recent years. Moreover, although Apple remains the undisputed leader, this also concerns it. Perhaps that's why the company began to seriously revise the iPad lineup, first releasing the iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch display, then supplementing it with the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch screen, and now introducing a budget version - just an iPad, which replaced the iPad Air 2 . And it is important that the price for the iPad was set to a minimum, making it even lower than that of the iPad mini 4.

True, here important nuance: Apple has removed iPad mini 4 from its range with a memory capacity of less than 128 GB. Of course, there are still plenty of them in “white” retail, including options with 32 GB, like the new iPad, but they still cost more than the new iPad. In turn, if you buy a new iPad with 128 GB of memory, it will be 2 thousand more expensive than the iPad mini 4 with the same capacity.

Let's face it: there is a fair amount of confusion. But, apparently, Apple was guided by the desire to make a truly affordable tablet, without giving rise to “cannibalism” within the line. But for this, we had to “kill” the iPad Air 2 and at the same time abandon the iPad mini 4 options with a small amount of memory. At the same time, for the iPad Pro 9.7, the new product still poses a significant threat - precisely because of the price. Thus, today the model range Apple tablets looks like this: the flagship is iPad Pro 12.9″, the middle version is iPad Pro 9.7″, and the most affordable models are iPad mini 4 and iPad with a diagonal of 9.7″. We decided to study the 2017 iPad in detail and figure out in which cases it is worth purchasing, and in which cases it is still better to choose the iPad Pro 9.7″ or iPad mini 4.

Let's look at the technical characteristics of the new product.

So what should you pay attention to? First of all, on the Apple A9 SoC: other iPads use a chip with an X on the end (A8X, A9X), which are more productive than their “iPhone” brothers - A8 and A9. However, the A8 is used in the iPad mini. So in this respect, the new iPad is closer to the iPad mini line.

The second point: the maximum amount of internal memory in the new iPad is limited to 128 GB, while the iPad Pro has a 256 GB option. And third: the new product is heavier and thicker than both predecessors - in this parameter it is closer to the iPad Air first generations. But the battery capacity is a little larger. But what this gives can only be understood through real testing. As well as evaluate the performance of the Apple A9 at this screen resolution in comparison with the Apple A9X, Apple A8X and Apple A8. So let's get started!

Packaging and equipment

The packaging of the new iPad is traditional for Apple tablets and is practically no different from the packaging of previous generations of tablets. The photo below next to the box shows the packaging with the only accessory for the iPad - Smart Cover.

The contents of the iPad itself do not promise any surprises: leaflets, charger, lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the SIM card cradle. Charger has the same power as the iPad Pro 9.7″: 10 W (2.1 A, 5.1 V).

In general, it doesn’t matter whether the iPad costs 25 thousand rubles or 83 thousand (the most expensive version of the iPad Pro 12.9″) - the packaging and equipment will be identical. For those who buy an inexpensive device, this should warm their souls :)

Design and accessories

Externally, the new iPad is similar to its predecessors, but when we take it in our hands, we understand that it is still worth comparing it not with the latest generation models (iPad Pro and iPad Air 2), but with the first generation iPad Air. The device is a little thicker and heavier, and doesn't have that expensive, modern design feel that you usually get from new Apple products. However, you can’t blame the iPad for being cheap and calling its appearance outdated either. It's just an iPad. No more and no less. Despite all the controversy of this decision, Apple marketers gave it a surprisingly accurate name.

Like everyone else latest iPad, there is an all-metal aluminum body, a Home button with a fingerprint scanner, front and rear cameras, two volume buttons on the right side. But if you compare it with the iPad Pro 9.7″, there are some differences.

Firstly, the speakers are located only at the bottom, right and left of the Lightning connector. Therefore, there is no stereo sound here. Secondly, the camera does not have a flash, and the camera itself does not protrude above the back surface. Thirdly, there is no keyboard connector on the left side. Finally, fourthly, top panel in the version with the LTE module it is made entirely of plastic, while on the iPad Pro it is made in the form of a thin plastic strip.

In fact, Apple simply took the body of the first generation iPad Air. We didn't have a copy of the iPad Air to compare the two devices and verify this assumption for sure, but the matching dimensions, coupled with iPad photos Air leaves little doubt about this. In principle, this decision is quite logical: why reinvent the wheel if you can take an existing design and simply replace the components?

At the same time, the key technologies of recent years - a fingerprint scanner and a virtual SIM card - are present in the new iPad. But, unfortunately, there is no compatibility with the Smart Keyboard and the Pencil stylus. The first is due to the lack of a dock connector, as mentioned above, the second is due to a different type of screen and glass (this will be discussed in the corresponding section).

Speaking of accessories, it's worth noting that the only accessory currently available is the Apple Smart Cover. It is available in five colors (white, navy, charcoal, red and pink sand). We received a dark blue version for testing. He is pleasant and handsome, although nothing new can be said here. Unfortunately, there is no case for the iPad, but if you happen to have a case for the first generation iPad Air lying around, it should fit without any problems.

To summarize the above, we note that Apple used the design of the first generation iPad Air in the new iPad - with all the ensuing consequences in terms of functionality and weight and size parameters. But unlike the 2013 tablet, the new product has a fingerprint scanner, and that's the main thing.

Screen

The new iPad has a 9.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2048x1536 - in general, exactly the same parameters as the iPad Air 2. latest update iOS has appeared Night function Shift, designed to adjust the image in the optimal way (from a physiological point of view) for working with the tablet before bed.

Detailed testing of the screen was carried out by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, Alexey Kudryavtsev. Below is his conclusion.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photograph in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Apple iPad (A1823), then in all comparative photographs they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Apple iPad (A1823) is slightly lighter (brightness according to photographs is 127 versus 114 for the Nexus 7). This is due to the fact that there is an air gap between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix. Due to the presence of glass/air and air/matrix boundaries with very different refractive indices, such screens do not look good in conditions of intense external illumination. But their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much cheaper, since only the glass itself needs to be replaced. IN in this case The situation is partially corrected by an effective anti-reflective coating on the screen. The outer surface of the screen also has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, but still worse than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a slower rate than with regular glass.

With manual brightness control and when the white field was displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 500 cd/m², the minimum was 3.9 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the good anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at an acceptable level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located to the left of the peephole front camera). Automatic adjustment Brightness works in the old Apple style (remember 2012) - brightness can only increase as ambient light levels increase. However, if you put the tablet into sleep mode and turn it on again, the brightness will be set in accordance with the external light level, that is, it will decrease in the dark. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider when current level ambient light, so the user may try to influence the operation of this function. Having adjusted the brightness in complete darkness and in an office environment, we found that in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 18 cd/m², in illuminated conditions artificial light office (about 550 lux) the brightness increases to 200 cd/m², in a very bright environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) is set to 500 cd/m². We were pleased with the result. It turns out that the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately and, to some extent, allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This tablet uses a matrix IPS type. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which Apple screens iPad (A1823) and Nexus 7 display the same images, with the screen brightness initially set to approximately 200 cd/m² (over a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forced to switch to 6500 K.

There is a white field perpendicular to the screens:

We note good uniformity of brightness and color tone white field.

And a test picture:

Color balance varies slightly, color saturation is normal.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level.

And a white field:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (by at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Apple iPad (A1823) the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened weakly and acquires a violet or red-violet hue. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 800:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 18 ms (10 ms on + 8 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 25 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.05, which is slightly lower than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Color gamut is almost equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components with each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since there is no color balance of great importance, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Work in LTE networks

The tablet will work on almost all LTE networks, and also supports a virtual SIM card Apple SIM (more details about what this is and how to use it are described).

LTE reception is reliable. Speed measurements using the Speedtest.net iOS application (used Beeline SIM card) showed normal results for both data acquisition and downloading. However, the results may greatly depend on the operator, testing location, network load at a particular moment, etc.

iPad supports hot insertion and SIM card replacement (without reboot), as well as all latest standards LTE and Wi-Fi (LTE-Advanced, Wi-Fi 5 GHz 802.11ac). We didn't notice any differences from the iPad Pro here.

Camera

Camera capabilities and specifications are another aspect in which the new iPad is inferior to the iPad Pro, but matches the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. 4K video is not supported, nor is slo-mo 240 fps (120 fps only) . The resolution of the main module is 8 megapixels. Here are examples of the pictures he takes.

The camera handles macro photography well, but not perfectly. The iPad Pro did better with this.

It is impossible to distinguish the license plates of the cars (although they were visible to the naked eye during the shooting). However, we cannot call the image fuzzy.

Sharping on the wires is practically absent.

When you enlarge the image to its original size, some blurring is noticeable, but the tree branches are worked out quite well.

For distant shots, the sharpness drops a little.

Overall, although the camera is worse than that of the iPad Pro, strictly speaking, it is more than enough for typical tablet use. The pictures come out good, quite clear, so for taking documents or a random photo on the street, when for some reason the phone is not at hand, iPad will do no problem.

We were also pleased with video shooting - an example is possible (1920x1080, 64.4 MB). Yes, unlike the iPad Pro, there is no 4K support, but, again, how often do you need to shoot 4K on a tablet? Perhaps, if a manufacturer’s goal is to make a budget tablet, then the first thing you should save on is the camera. But Apple did not save radically and found a fine balance between quality and price. The same, however, applies to the new iPad as a whole.

conclusions

Apple has released a device not for geeks, demanding pros or fans of design features, but for ordinary people. For those who do not need 4K video shooting, top performance, or work with expensive accessories, but need just a tablet. Surf the Internet, read email and books, watch movies, play games... In general, do everything that the vast majority of tablet buyers do.

At the same time, what is important, owners of the new iPad will not have the constant feeling that this budget device- they say, they saved on both this and that... The performance is more than sufficient for everyday use, the screen is excellent, there is even a fingerprint scanner - today this is no longer a luxury or entertainment for geeks, but an essential technology that significantly increases comfort and safety of using the tablet. Plus, great length battery life. Yes, the screen here has an air gap, and not OGS, as in more expensive iPads, however, again, for ordinary users this is even a plus: it’s no secret that the most common breakdown of tablets is related to broken screen. So, replacing a display whose glass is separated from the matrix costs several times less.

As a matter of fact, if you (or the person you are helping to choose a tablet) do not have a clear understanding of why he needs an iPad Pro, then you can safely buy a new iPad, thus saving almost twice. Children pester you and ask you to buy “an iPad like everyone else” - buy an iPad. A friend asks me to recommend a tablet “so that my wife can read books on the subway and my child can play educational games” - we confidently recommend the iPad. With this new product, Apple dealt a severe blow to its competitors, most of whom play on the field “almost like Apple, but cheaper,” but retained the highest level of quality. Well, we will expect innovations and technological breakthroughs from the future iPad Pro.

Today, October 30, there was an Apple presentation, which I liked much more than the previous several. First of all, I very satisfied release of the updated Mac Mini, and secondly, the most best iPad for now! In my opinion, this model is in some ways even breakthrough and key in the history of the brand... Why? Let's take a closer look at it.

The iPad now has a completely new design. Please note that the bezels around the screen have become noticeably smaller. To my delight, all the key elements like the camera were hidden on this frame. No terrible eyebrow that spoils many modern smartphones... Also, the iPad has become 1 mm thinner and the design of its side edges has become more straight and strict.

Two iPad Pro models have been redesigned: regular and large. Now they can be distinguished as iPad Pro 11 inches and iPad Pro 12.9 inches. Please note that only the first model's screen has grown - previously it was 10.5. The display is updated and is called Liquid Retina. This is exactly the display in the new iPhone Xr. It is considered not the most top-end display, because the iPhone Xs has Super Retina.

The 11-inch iPad Pro has a different resolution (a headache for app developers) than the 10.5 iPad Pro, but the pixel density is the same.

Since the iPad Pro no longer has a Home button, users will have to get used to the new gestures that iPhone X, Xs, and Xr owners are already accustomed to.

Also added to the iPad Pro is facial recognition technology - Face ID, which works in any position of the iPad. Apple emphasizes that their technology is the most secure. Unlike competitors' solutions. Face ID allows you to unlock your iPad or make an online purchase...

The processor in the new iPad Pro is A12X Bionic (in the iPhone Xs, for reference, only A12). This processor more powerful than the processors in most laptops presented on the market. A12X 2 times more powerful processors in the previous generation iPad Pro!

By the way, Apple pays great attention to demonstrating the capabilities of the iPad at its conferences. For some, this is “filling up airtime,” but if you take a closer look, the company is persistently promoting the idea to the masses that the iPad can well replace a work laptop. This time they showed Adobe features Photoshop CC, which will be released for iPad in 2019.

The best iPad gets the best updated stylus! It recognizes touch: you can change drawing tools in programs by touching the area below.

To pair with an iPad, you need to magnetize the Apple Pencil. Moreover, at this moment the stylus is charging...

Apple is also concerned about releasing a new smart keyboards Keyboard Folio.

The new iPad Pro no longer has lightning. From now on, the standard for charging and synchronization is USB Type C. You can connect a camera or monitor to your iPad Pro through this port. USB-C also allows you to charge a connected phone via a wire.

In the new iPad Pro, the front camera does not shine with special characteristics: it is suitable for selfies and video communication. It's all the good old 7 megapixels. But they added Portrait mode, Portrait lighting, as well as Animoji and Memoji, previously available only in iPhone X, etc. to the functionality.

The rear camera has 12 megapixels and allows you to take cool pictures and record 4K videos. BUT! The exact same camera is in the old iPad Pro 10.5, so there shouldn’t be any revelations when you first get acquainted with the camera.

On the Apple website you can also find a strange moment: the optical image stabilization has disappeared somewhere from the camera. :(Also, there was a six-element lens, but it became a five-element lens. I’m not a professional in photographic equipment, but apparently the camera has become slightly worse.

Now attention! It may be expensive, but the new iPad Pro has a 1 terabyte model variation!

Regarding communication modules, the three most important modules have received improvements:

  • Now Wi-Fi simultaneously Can support dual bands 2.4 and 5 GHz.
  • The LTE module is now designated Gigabit Class LTE (29 bands).
  • Bluetooth is now version 5.0 instead of 4.2.

The new iPad Pro has support for eSim (an electronic SIM card built into the device). Appeared for the first time in the iPhone XS. Allows you to program it to work with different operators. How is this different from Apple Sim technology? Because Apple Sim is just a SIM card that is not tied to any operator, but eSim is a built-in small module.

  1. The 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro displays are rectangles with rounded corners. The display diagonal is measured without taking into account the curves and is 12.9 inches for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 11 inches for the 11-inch iPad Pro. The actual viewing area is smaller.
  2. The amount of available space is less than stated and depends on various factors.
