In this article, I will talk about how to know how many charging cycles your MacBook has already gone through and how much is the maximum possible charge (data table by model).

This article is suitable for all MacBook Pro and Air models released in different years. There may be some differences in the architecture or description of the Mac OS version.

When you use a Mac laptop, its battery goes through recharge cycles. Some recharge cycles are carried out using a full battery charge, which does not always mean one charge.

For example, one day the device could be used up to 50% charge, and then it was completely recharged. If this happened the next day, then it will not be two, but one recharge cycle. It turns out that one recharge cycle can take several days.

But in fact, this is a very important indicator, because the number of cycles may be small, but the MacBook sits down very quickly, and in the meantime you will be wondering what the reason is.

There are several options here. The first is if you left the laptop “idle” for a long time, that is, it lay completely discharged for a long time, but idle time is fraught with a slow “dying of the battery.” The second case, if, on the contrary, you were constantly working from the network, then the battery ceases to function normally, since its “services” are not in demand. Well, thirdly, probably the most obvious - you can “kill” the battery, or the one whose output power does not match your version of Mac. You can find out the factory (initial) battery capacity of your particular model on the official Apple website. After that, compare this indicator with yours and a lot will become clear.

And now about recharge cycles. If you use your MacBook in normal mode, that is, both on mains power and on battery power, then the number of recharge cycles is usually a fairly accurate indicator. All MacBook batteries (except some before 2010) are rated for 1000 cycles. This is the battery life declared by the manufacturer, after which it may become completely unusable.

But note that the battery life will begin to drop much earlier; this can be replaced from about the three hundredth cycle. Therefore, you can “torment” the battery for up to 1000 cycles or more, but there will be little pleasure from this. Here you will have to choose, if you need a laptop that works for as long as possible without recharging, you will have to change the battery. The recharging cycle is completed when you fully charge the battery, but this does not always require a complete discharge. For example, you can use only half the charge in a day, and then fully charge your laptop. The same can be done the next day and it will count as one recharge cycle rather than two. Sometimes it can take several days for the cycle to complete.

How to find out the number of charge cycles on a MacBook

  1. Select the Apple icon from the menu bar.

What is a "recharge cycle"?

This is when you discharged the battery to zero and then charged it to 100 percent. In real life, this “ideal” option does not always work. Example: you work part of the time at home and part of the time in the library (where, of course, the outlets are a problem, so you have to work on battery power). You discharge the battery to 50%, and then come home and charge the battery again to 100%. This means that you have completed only 0.5 recharge cycles; you will only be able to complete it completely - in the same scenario of using the MacBook - only the next day. For some, the battery works at 25% per day (i.e. it will take 4 days), for others at 10% (10 days), and so on.

Each recharge cycle slightly reduces the battery capacity. Apple notes that the capacity will drop to 80% of the original after 1,000 full charge cycles, and then worse.
