How to extract a zip file. How to unpack (unzip) an archive: an overview of simple solutions

In this article we will dwell in detail on the algorithm of actions in specific programs when unpacking data, using the last three groups of methods.

Method 1: WinRAR

One of the most famous archivers is WinRAR, which, although it specializes in working with RAR archives, can also extract data from ZIP archives.

Method 2: 7-Zip

Another archiver that can extract data from ZIP archives is the 7-Zip application.

Method 3: IZArc

Now let's describe the algorithm for extracting content from ZIP objects using IZArc.

  1. Launch IZArc. Click on the button "Open".
  2. The shell starts "Open archive...". Go to the ZIP location directory. With the object selected, click "Open".
  3. The contents of the ZIP will appear as a list in the IZArc shell. To start unpacking files, click on the button "Extract" on the panel.
  4. The extraction settings window opens. There are many different parameters that the user can figure out on his own. We are interested in specifying the unpacking directory. It is displayed in the field "Extract to". You can change this parameter by clicking on the catalog image from the field to the right.
  5. Like 7-Zip, it is activated "Browse folders". Select the directory you plan to use and click "OK".
  6. Change the extraction folder path in the box "Extract to" The unzipping settings window indicates that the unzipping procedure can begin. Click "Extract".
  7. The contents of the ZIP archive were extracted to the folder whose path was specified in the field "Extract to" unzipping settings window.

Method 4: ZIP Archiver

Method 5: HaoZip

Another software product with which you can unpack a ZIP archive is the archiver from Chinese developers HaoZip.

The main disadvantage of this method is that HaoZip only has an English and Chinese interface, but the official version does not have Russification.

Method 6: PeaZip

Now let's look at the procedure for unzipping ZIP archives using the PeaZip application.

  1. Launch PeaZip. Click on the menu "File" and select an item "Open archive".
  2. The opening window appears. Go to the directory where the ZIP object is located. Having marked this element, press "Open".
  3. The contents of the ZIP archive will appear in the shell. To unzip, click on the shortcut "Extract" in the form of a folder.
  4. The extraction options window appears. In field "Target" The current path to unzip the data is displayed. If desired, it is possible to change it. Click on the button located immediately to the right of this field.
  5. The tool starts "Browse folders", which we have already become familiar with earlier. Navigate to the desired directory and highlight it. Click "OK".
  6. After displaying the new destination directory address in the "Target" press to start extraction "OK".
  7. The files are extracted to the specified folder.

Method 7: WinZip

Now let's turn to the instructions for extracting data from a ZIP archive using the WinZip file archiver.

The main disadvantage of this method is that the version of WinZip in question has a limited period of use, and then you will have to buy the full version.

Method 8: Total Commander

Now let's move on from archivers to file managers, starting with the most famous of them - Total Commander.

There is another option for extracting files in Total Commander. This method is especially suitable for those users who do not want to unpack the entire archive, but only individual files.

Method 9: FAR Manager

The next file manager, in which we will talk about the actions of unpacking ZIP archives, is called FAR Manager.

  1. Launch FAR Manager. It, like Total Commander, has two navigation panels. You need to go in one of them to the directory where the ZIP archive is located. To do this, first of all, you should select the logical disk on which this object is stored. We need to decide in which panel we will open the archive: on the right or on the left. In the first case, use the combination Alt+F2, and in the second - Alt+F1.
  2. A disk selection window appears. Click on the name of the drive where the archive is located.
  3. Enter the folder where the archive is located and navigate to it by double-clicking on the object LMB.
  4. The content will appear inside the FAR Manager panel. Now in the second panel you need to go to the directory where the unpacking is performed. Again we select the disk using the combination Alt+F1 or Alt+F2, depending on which combination you used the first time. Now you need to use something else.
  5. The familiar disk selection window appears, in which you must click on the option that suits you.
  6. Once the drive is open, navigate to the folder where you want to extract the files. Next, click anywhere on the panel that displays the archive files. Apply combination Ctrl+* to select all objects contained in the ZIP. After highlighting, press "Copy" at the bottom of the program shell.
  7. The extraction options window appears. Click on the button "OK".
  8. The ZIP contents are extracted to a directory that is activated in another panel of the File Manager.

Method 10: “Explorer”

Even if you do not have archivers or third-party file managers installed on your PC, you can always open a ZIP archive and extract data from it using "Conductor".

There are several methods to unpack a ZIP archive using various programs. These are file managers and archivers. We have not presented a complete list of these applications, but only the most famous of them. There is no significant difference between them in the procedure for unpacking an archive with the specified extension. Therefore, you can safely use those archivers and file managers that are already installed on your computer. But even if you don’t have such programs, you don’t have to install them right away to unpack the ZIP archive, since you can perform this procedure using "Conductor", although it is less convenient than using third-party software.

Instructions

Sometimes problems arise with unpacking the archive - that the file is corrupted (the file is damaged). Typically, users delete such archives without realizing that they can be tried.

Open WinRar and open the folder in the program that contains the damaged archive. Select the archive, and then click on the icon depicting a first aid kit.

The archive recovery window will open. Specify in which folder to save the corrected archive and check the RAR archive type box. Click OK - archive recovery will begin.

After the restoration is completed, the archive will be saved with the mark fixed. You can delete the original damaged archive, or you can leave it as is, using the new corrected file.

To avoid confusion, replace the old archive with a new one in the original folder, and then try extracting the files into the current folder again.

Zipped files not only take up less space, but also make it easy to email any number of files in one click. When you receive such an archive of files by mail, it is not always clear what to do with it next.

Instructions

So, you have a file in a format unknown to you, but they assure you that it is an archive and you need to unpack it to get to the contents. To unpack such a file, you need to download it to your computer and install a special program that can handle files. Such programs are called “archivers”. They are different, but perform the same tasks, so you can choose any of them: WinZip, WinRar, 7Zip.

First of all, download one of the archivers for yourself. This can be done on any of the official developer sites: www.corel.com, www.win-rar.ru, www.7-zip.org. After the program downloads, install it following the prompts of the installation wizard.

To unpack a file, right-click on it and select one of the items from the menu that appears:
1.If you installed the WinZip archiver, click on the “WinZip” line and then “Extract to...”.

2.If you installed the WinRar archiver, click on the “Extract files...” line.

3.If you installed the 7Zip archiver, click on the line “7-Zip” and then “Extract files...”.
A window with the contents of your computer will appear in front of you. In this window, select the folder in which you want to save the unpacked files and click “OK”. Ready!

Archives with the .zip extension are used quite often. They are convenient for storing files in compressed form - this way they take up less space. Archive programs are often used to prepare files for transmission by email. In order to open or unpack a .zip archive, it is important that a program for archiving and unpacking files with the .zip extension is installed on your computer, and then only a few mouse clicks will be required.

Instructions

There are several ways to unpack the zip archive. If you need to extract all the files contained in an archive, you need to right-click on the archive icon. Select the desired command from the list of commands in the drop-down menu.

The Extract Files command will open the Extract Path and Options window. In this window, you must specify the path to the folder into which the files will be unpacked. The directory has a tree structure. When moving through the branches, you should select an existing folder or create a new one by clicking on the “New Folder” button. Having decided on the location to save the files, click on the “OK” button.

The “Extract to current folder” command means that the files will be extracted to the same folder where . For example, if the .zip archive is on the desktop, the files will be healed to the desktop. They will be saved without creating a new folder.

The "Extract to" command<название.zip-архива>" will allow you to unpack files into the same folder in which the archive is located, but they will be placed in a folder with the same name as the name of the archive.

If you click on the zip archive with the left mouse button, a window with the contents of the archive will open. From it you can unpack all files at once or extract only the files you need. To do this, you need to select the files contained in the archive and click the “Extract” button. The same window will open as in step No. 2 (“Extraction path and parameters”). You can also open the window for saving files by selecting “Commands” in the top menu bar and selecting “Extract to a specified folder” from the drop-down menu.

You can also extract files from a .zip archive in another way. To do this, open the archive using the method indicated in step No. 5, select the necessary files and, while holding down the left mouse button, simply drag the files into the desired folder. It does not matter whether the folder into which files are copied from the archive is open or closed.

It’s unlikely that anyone will empty the entire contents of their closet onto the floor if they only need to get one T-shirt. This idea also applies when working with archives. There is no need to unpack all the contents if the archiver program allows you to selectively extract the necessary files.

You will need

  • - WinRAR program;
  • - archive.

Instructions

Upload the archive from which you are going to extract part of the files into the WinRAR program. To do this, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+O. With the same success, you can use the “Open Archive” command from the “File” menu. There is another option to do the same: select in the drop-down list, which is located under the main menu of the program window, the disk on which the desired archive is located. In this case, the contents of the disk will be displayed in the program window. Select the folder in which the archive is located and double-click on it with the left mouse button. You can do it even simpler: open the folder in which the archive is located in Explorer and double-click on it with the left mouse button.

View the contents of the archive; fortunately, the WinRAR program gives you this opportunity. To do this, right-click on the archive file in the program window. In the context menu that opens, select the “View file” option. You can use the keyboard shortcut Alt+V after selecting the archive file. To get the same result, the “View” button, which is located directly under the main menu, or the “View File” command from the “Commands” menu, would work well.

Select the files you are going to extract from the archive. In order to select several files at once, left-click on them while holding down the Ctrl key. If you need to select a large number of files at once, left-click on the top one, press the Shift key and click on the last file.

Extract the selected files from the archive. To do this, click on the “Extract” button located under the main menu of the program. The same thing happens if you press the Alt+E key combination, or use the “Extract to specified folder” command from the “Commands” menu. In the file extraction settings window that opens, specify the folder into which the selected files from the archive will be unpacked and click the OK button .

Almost every owner of a mobile phone, even a very inexpensive one, has several fun games on it that serve as entertainment anywhere and anytime. In addition, many people like to read their favorite books or necessary textbooks on their phone while traveling on the subway or bus. All this is done using jar files on the phone. To use this format, you need to know how to properly download and open it on your phone.

Instructions

So, to run this type of file on your , do the following. First, make sure that of the two application files on your computer, jad and jar, you select the latter and download it. Place this file in a folder on your phone called “Others” or “Others.” Place the jar file for, namely, in a special folder “Installation files”.

Next, disconnect the phone from the computer and go to the folder on the device itself that contains the required file. Select it, go to the menu and click "Open". The phone will then launch the application installer. You may be offered the option of installing it in the “Applications” or “Games” folder, or choosing the location of the application itself - in the phone memory or on a removable memory card. In this situation, it is better to stop memory, since it is better to keep the memory of the phone itself as free as possible. In addition, you will be able to use installed applications even after changing your phone.

After that, go to the folder specified during the installation process and check the functionality of the installed application. Launch the game or other service application and make sure that it works properly: it does not freeze, does not slow down, and does not require additional installation components. After a successful check, proceed to the next step.

If you are using a regular phone, then you most likely will not have to delete the original jar file on the phone. Just go to the folder where it was previously and make sure it is empty. Smartphones usually save installation files, so if you are sure that you will no longer need it, go to the required folder and manually delete the jar file.

As you can see, opening the jar format on your phone is quite simple: just follow the instructions on your phone and don’t forget that you can only download files of this type from trusted and high-quality resources.

Files with the jar extension are executable files that are written in the java language and run on the Windows operating system using the Java Runtime. This abbreviation stands for Java Archive File - a Java archive file. Typically, such files are mini-programs for various mobile devices.

An archive is simply one file into which other files have been stuffed to reduce the overall size. If you still sigh when you receive another file in a ZIP, RAR, 7-Zip or any other archive, then this article is for you.

Let's look at several possible options how to unpack the archive:

  1. How to extract a ZIP archive using Windows 7
  2. How to extract data from a RAR file using 7-Zip
  3. How to unpack a damaged or multi-volume archive

At the end of the article you can watch a short video on the topic.

The easiest way to extract a ZIP archive

ZIP archives are regular files with a “.zip” extension. In fact, to simply unzip files from ZIP, you don’t need any programs; everything is already built into Windows 7 Explorer. To unzip files, just right-click on the file and select “Extract all...” from the menu.

A dialog box will appear where you will need to specify the path to unpack the files, or leave it as default (current folder). As you can see, in the example I have a “Checklist.zip” file with a zipped Word document. You can often find a PDF file in archives.

If you leave the “Show extracted files” checkbox enabled, then at the end of the unzipping procedure, another Explorer window will open with a new folder open.

You don’t have to unzip the files at all, but go to the archive file like a regular folder and open the desired file from there.

Unfortunately, Explorer cannot work with RAR files. For them you need to install one of the programs that will be discussed.

Using the program is almost as easy as extracting a ZIP using File Explorer. To do this, just right-click on the file and select one of the items from the “7-Zip” submenu:

  • “Unpack” – to open the unpack dialog
  • “Extract here” – to simply extract the files to the current directory
  • “Extract to “Folder Name”” - unzip the files into a folder with the archive name (I recommend)

The simplest are the second and third options, because... do not require any further action. If you select the first option, the following dialog will appear:

Here we can specify our unpacking path. If you select the “No paths” option, then all files from the archive will be in one heap, without subfolders. The “Overwrite” parameter is responsible for the mode of overwriting existing files. By default, the program will ask about each such file.

You can extract files not only from the right-click menu. If you double-click on the file, it will open in the 7-Zip program window. To unzip files simply select them and click the "Extract" button

Alternative free method - Hamster Lite Archiver

I also want to introduce you to one newfangled program, Hamster Lite Archiver. It is even simpler, free and has a modern interface. After installing it, new menu items also appear in the menu.

To unpack a rar or zip archive, right-click on it and select one of the options:

  • Extract files… - opens a dialog window
  • Extract Here – extracts files into the current folder
  • Extract to “Folder name” - unzip to folder

Despite the fact that the context menu items are in English, the program itself is in Russian. Apparently we haven’t gotten around to translating these points yet, but by the time you read this article the situation may have already improved.

The dialogue looks like this:

To unzip all files, simply click the “Unzip” button and select the folder where to put them.

How to unzip a file using WinRAR

The WinRAR program is widely used for working with RAR archives. The program can be downloaded from the developer's official website. Look immediately in the list for the Russian version of the program (Russian). Installing the program is very easy, just click “Next” all the time. The program is paid with a trial period of 40 days. After the trial period ends, the program continues to work, but begins to bother you with a window reminding you about the license every time you start it.

To unpack RAR, or any other archive, just right-click on the file and select one of the options:

  • Extract files... - the unpacking dialog will open
  • Extract to current folder – contents will appear in the current folder
  • Extract to “folder name” - extracts the contents to a new folder with the archive name (recommended)

The simplest options are the second and third. If you select the first option, a dialog will appear in which you can specify the specific path where your files will be placed and a few more parameters:

Update Mode:

  • Extract with file replacement - if the folder already contains the same files as in the archive, then they will be replaced with new ones
  • Extract with file update is the same, but only older files will be replaced
  • Update only existing files - only the update will occur, the remaining files will not be extracted.

The “Overwrite mode” items are responsible for the behavior of the program when replacing existing files.

You can also use this dialog to unpack a damaged archive. By default, if a file has an error, it will not be unpacked. If you check the “Leave damaged files on disk” checkbox, the damaged file will be unpacked. If it is a video or music, then it can be opened. But, of course, the completeness of the resulting file will depend on the degree of damage to the archive.

You can also unpack files from the WinRAR program window. To do this, just select the required files and click on any of the buttons: “Extract...” or “Wizard”.

The WinRar program will also help you organize a backup copy of your information.

Please note that after installing any of the listed programs, the standard “Extract…” menu item in Windows 7 Explorer for zip archives may disappear.

How to unpack a multi-volume archive

Multi-volume archives are created to split one huge archive into several small ones. In this case, there will be numbers at the end of the file names, for example.z01, .z02, .z03 or part1, part2, part 3 or 001, 002, 003, etc. To unpack such a multi-volume archive you will need ALL the parts, otherwise nothing good will come of it. The process of unpacking a multi-volume archive is no different from unzipping regular files.

You just need to unzip the first file in the list in the usual way, and the rest will be downloaded automatically.

If, in addition to the numbered parts, there is also a “regular” archive, then this file must be unpacked.

Please note that multi-volume ZIP archives created by WinRAR can only be unpacked with the same program!

Other programs give an error and even if you crack! And vice versa, WinRAR does not understand multi-volume files created by other programs.
After unpacking, the unnecessary archive file can be deleted.

Conclusions:

I believe that this article gave a comprehensive answer to the question of how to unpack a zip, rar, 7z or any other archive. This can be done using Windows Explorer (ZIP only) or using the free programs 7-Zip and Hamster Lite Archiver or using the paid program WinRAR. Choose a method that is convenient for you and use it for your health!

Imagine how grateful your friends will be if you share this information with them on social networks! By the way, you can also create your own archives using these programs, but read about this in the following articles.

Zip format is one of the most popular formats that allows you to compress files without loss. This simplifies the data transfer process and saves hard disk space.

Typically, the zip format is used to archive files that are rarely used or to send documents and images by email. In addition, the zip format is also widely used to compress files and make them available for download on websites or through FTP servers.

On a note! There are many third-party programs available to decompress compressed ZIP files, but if you're using Windows 10, you don't necessarily need to install additional software. Windows 10 already has a built-in tool for extracting files in zip format.

You can unzip files in just a few seconds and here's how to do it.

As mentioned above, Windows 10 comes with a built-in tool for extracting zip files, which means you can simply double-click on the zipped folder and access its contents, opening all the files.

Important! If you don't extract the files, you won't be able to edit or save new content in the same document, and if you try to install the software, the installation process won't start.

To extract all files from a ZIP folder in Windows 10 without third party programs, follow these steps:

WinRAR for extracting files

WinRAR is a great tool for decompressing and extracting compressed zip files. WinRAR is very popular due to its ease of use. There are 2 simple ways to extract zipped files using WinRAR.

First way

Second way

7-Zip, like WinRAR, is one of the most popular programs for unpacking zipped files. Most functions are performed using the right-click menu, making this program very easy to use.

First way

To extract files using 7-Zip you need to do the following:

Second way

Another way to unzip the files or file is to right-click on that zipped file and select "Open Archive":

Video - How to open a RAR or ZIP archive

In this article I will teach you how to unpack archives. It's very simple.

The archive is one file with a set of others to reduce the space they occupy.

They are very effective to use if access to information is needed very rarely and the space it occupies is large.

They usually have extensions:

Well, others. There are a lot of extensions. These are the most popular.

The archive can be compressed and this seriously saves free space. They are also often used to transmit large amounts of information. This is especially useful if you need to transmit it over the Internet, and the traffic limit is limited.

Also, if you put a password on the archive, this will ensure reliable information protection. And for this you just need skills to work with them.

Additionally, I want to say that it is not necessary to completely extract all files. You can only get what you need. This is very convenient than digging through a whole bunch of information.

To unpack the ZIP, you can use Windows tools. In other cases you will have to use an archiver.

Archiver is a program for working with archives.

In the example, I will use the 2 most popular and universal ones:

  1. WinRar is shareware.
  2. 7zip is completely free.

It is worth noting that unpacking creates a copy of the files in open form and therefore you can safely delete the unpacked archive ( not always like this). Now I will show you how to do this.

You can watch these instructions both in the article and in the video. Everything is laid out in great detail.

Extract ZIP using Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer allows you to unpack archives with a ZIP extension. To do this, right-click on it. In the context menu that appears, select “Extract all...” as in the picture below.

Then a window will appear. In it, indicate the path where to unpack and proceed to extraction.

This method only works with the ZIP format. For other formats, you must use a third-party archiver.

Unzip using 7-zip

Download the free 7-zip program. For 32-bit or 64-bit. It will allow you to quickly and easily unpack various archive formats. Check the bit depth in your computer's specifications.

Once installed, a 7-zip tab will appear in your context menu. Go into it and select “Unpack” as in the image below.

In the window, specify the extraction path ( its default location).

The files will appear in the location you specified.

Unpack using Winrar

Winrar is a very convenient program and works with all extensions. It is paid, but has a free trial period of 40 days. Then you will be constantly shown a window about purchasing a license. In general, it is free to use.

Download it from the official website and install.

Unpacking in it occurs in the same way as in 7-zip. They differ in convenience and additional features.

As you can see on the left there are several additional functions that simplify your work. Confirm extraction and navigate to the unzipped files.

Unpacking a damaged archive

When unpacking, the error “The archive is damaged” appears and in order to extract the files, you will need to use the capabilities of Winrar. This error can occur even if 1 kilobyte of information is damaged, and therefore it makes sense to extract and see which files remain working.

When extracting, check the box next to “Do not delete files extracted with errors” and it will be unpacked. Look, it's on the left in the image above.

Please note that in this case, not all files will be functional.

Unpacking an archive consisting of several volumes

To do this, just collect all the volumes into one folder and unpack the first volume. Others in the chain will unpack after him.

Please note that all volumes must be present and should be extracted using the same archiver program that created them. Then everything will go well.

See the example in the picture below.

They look something like this, with an extension with a serial number added at the end. Otherwise, they are no different from ordinary ones.

I hope you were able to extract the files you needed and you can easily do this in the future. If you have questions, ask in the comments.
