Do you have an iPhone 8? Pictures taken under artificial light

After the first year of testing iPhone 8 and 8 plus, we can already draw conclusions about the pros and cons of the model. The impression is positive; under the not-so-new body is hidden a powerful machine that has shown itself positively in different operating conditions.

Before drawing conclusions, let’s remember the characteristics of the iPhone 8 and 8 plus:

  1. iPhone 8 size – 138.4x67.3x7.3 mm, weight – 148 g; iPhone 8 plus – 158.4x78.1x7.5 mm, weight – 202 g.
  2. Widescreen LCD display, Retina HD, Multi‑Touch function with IPS technology. In iPhone 8, the resolution is 1337x750 pixels, the contrast is 1400:1. In iPhone 8 plus – 1920x1080 pixels, 1300:1. Supports True Tone auto white balance function.
  3. IP67 dust and waterproof rating.
  4. A11 Bionic with neural brain.
  5. Camera 12 megapixels. 10x digital zoom. Record 1080p HD video at 30 or 60 fps.
  6. Touch ID.
  7. FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi or cellular.
  8. Supports HEVC, MPEG‑4 Part 2, H.264 and Motion JPEG video formats.
  9. Lithium-ion battery, iPhone 8 capacity 1821 mAh, iPhone 8 plus – 2675 mAh.
  10. Operating system iOS 12.

Apple continues to work on optimizing smartphones for people with disabilities and health problems. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature accessibility features. Thanks to special options, a person with visual or hearing impairments can customize the controls to suit themselves: use a magnifying glass, dictation, subtitles, and read the screen out loud.

Equipment

A description of the iPhone 8 and 8 plus would not be complete without a list of accessories for the smartphone. Unfortunately, the tradition of a small box with minimal filling was followed this time too. The gadget comes with:

  • standard charger with Lightning cable;
  • headphones with Lightning connector;
  • adapter from Lightning to standard 3.5 mm;
  • a paperclip for prying up a SIM card;
  • screen film;
  • instructions.

Until the last minute, fans of Apple gadgets hoped that a device for wireless charging. But the company never released its own docking stations, so those who want to take advantage of the cool new feature will have to look for charging outside. Engineers equipped smartphones with Qi technology; any device with the same expansion is suitable for charging.

Weight and size

The iPhone 8 and 8+ have undergone subtle changes in size and weight, but for a complete analysis even such little things are important:

  1. The weight of iPhone 8 is 148 g, which is 10 g more than the previous model, 8+ is “fat” by 8 g.
  2. The length of the iPhone 8 has increased by 1 mm, the thickness by 2 mm.

Changes in weight and dimensions occurred due to the appearance of the wireless charging function, as well as due to a change in the material of the rear panel. Instead of aluminum, the lid is now made of tempered glass.

Updated design?

Every year, lovers of Apple gadgets expect something revolutionary, and every year they are disappointed. Yes, there are few external changes in iPhone 8 and 8 plus:

  1. The back cover is now made of tempered glass.
  2. The company logo on the reverse side has shifted slightly.
  3. Three body colors are available: “Gold”, “Silver”, “Space Grey”. A limited edition red series of smartphones was released.

If Apple did not make major changes to the appearance of the next model, then this was necessary to achieve a different goal than a pair of “Wow!” from users. The design of iPhone 8 is a legacy of the style of the last ten years of the company's work; the model became a transition point between the old and new generations of smartphones. The role of the flagship was given to the iPhone X, and the “eight” was a pleasant surprise for fans of the usual design. Incarnated in the iPhone 7 case latest achievements engineering thought.

Waterproof

Like the “seven,” the iPhone 8 received an IP67 rating according to a standard that determines the smartphone’s resistance to solid objects and water. The model is protected to the maximum from dust, as indicated by the number 6. But with water resistance, everything is not so simple. A value of 7 means the following:

  • the device can be in water for 30 minutes without damaging the electronics;
  • immersion depth 1.5 m.

As a result, iPhone 8 cannot be called waterproof; only devices with ratings of 8 and 9 are called that. The Apple smartphone is rather water-resistant and can withstand short-term exposure to water and moisture. Moreover, liquids with a different consistency are doubly destructive. If sweet coffee, tea or soda gets in contact, you must immediately clean the surface.

Memory

iPhone 8 received 2 GB of RAM, 8+ respectively 3 GB. The memory of the iPhone 8 has not changed in digital terms compared to the previous model, but the performance and other functions of the smartphone have improved. Causes:

  1. A processor with a neural brain that analyzes, learns, and searches for optimal options for using data.
  2. 6 cores distribute and simultaneously solve many tasks.
  3. iOS 12 has become faster to process and respond to requests.

Traditionally, the capacity of the iPhone 8 and 8 plus is 65 GB or 256 GB, depending on the configuration and price. Practice has shown that 2 GB of RAM and 65 GB of memory are enough to load “heavy” games and complex programs with augmented reality function.

Battery capacity

The battery in iPhones remains the most talked about part. Today, the requirements for the battery are not so stringent; if a smartphone dies only in the evening, it’s already a holiday. Therefore, the news that the iPhone 8 battery was no longer 139 mAh smaller than on the “seven” (1821 mAh versus 1960 mAh) aroused indignation.

The reason for the reduction in battery capacity of the iPhone 8 is that wireless charging and other elements have been added to the case. But you shouldn’t be upset; the manufacturers promised that the difference will be compensated by better optimization of the smartphone.

As a result, in the very first months of testing, the iPhone received positive ratings among developers and ordinary users. When compared with the “seven”, the gadgets of the eighth series performed no worse, and sometimes even better, than the previous model.

Charging in a new way

Back in the 90s and 00s, wireless charging was only in the arsenal of superheroes and heroes of science fiction films. And today, every year, the range of smartphones that support charging through inductive energy transfer is expanding. iPhone 8 and 8 plus became the first in the Apple line to receive this technology. Advantages of wireless charging:

  • quick replenishment of energy volume, 100% battery in 30-40 minutes;
  • no wires;
  • charging from a distance.

iPhones 8 and 8 plus are currently only equipped with regular ones charger. The company will begin its own production of docking stations in September - October 2018. For now, the user is offered to purchase devices from other manufacturers. Fortunately, iPhones support the Qi transmission protocol, on the basis of which all such devices operate.

New generation of processors

Today, A11 Bionic is the most powerful and intelligent processor for smartphones. Some cores work for performance, some for energy efficiency. What does it give:

  1. In multitasking mode, the gadget works 3-4 times faster than previous models.
  2. Optimizing games and augmented reality applications.
  3. Even with intensive use, energy consumption is minimal.

The main feature of the A11 Bionic is the learning ability of the processor. It does not easily pass a signal through itself, but remembers it, correlates it with others and develops a work strategy. If this continues, the emergence artificial intelligence It will only be a matter of time.

WiFi

Wireless technology local network today it is present in almost any device that has microcircuits. It is possible to develop here only in the direction of increasing speed and expanding areas of use.

Wi-Fi iPhone 8 is represented by the 802.11ac standard with MIMO technology, which increases signal throughput. In iPhone 8 and 8 plus, Wi-Fi performs the following functions:

  • for data transmission;
  • to connect to the Internet;
  • to determine geoposition;
  • for video communication.

In previous models Apple frequent The owners' complaints are related to Wi-Fi not working: it is impossible to connect to the network, the password is not accepted, the Internet is slow. The problem is solved by updating to the latest software version. Back in iOS 11, the vulnerability problems of the Wi-Fi chip on iPhones were solved, and in iOS 12 even more so.

Headphone jack

Everyone has become somewhat accustomed to the fact that iPhones now offer headphones exclusively with a Lightning connector. Although at first this decision by Apple irritated users. Despite the universal hype, the reasons for changes in the format of listening to music are serious.

If with a 3.5 mm jack the sound quality depended on the device and listening means, now the functions of a digital-to-analog converter are embedded in the headphones themselves. Accessory manufacturers have the opportunity to create a product with their own settings. True, the cost of a worthy product will be appropriate.

Professional camera in your pocket

The camera capabilities of the iPhone are one of the reasons for the popularity of the smartphone. And here the G8 did not disappoint and worthily continued the tradition of stunning pictures of Apple models.

Advantages of the camera in iPhone 8 and 8 plus:

  • larger matrix;
  • optical stabilization during photo and video shooting;
  • many image processing functions, including advanced portrait effects;
  • convenient scaling control;
  • video recording in 4K format, possible frequency 24, 30 and 60 fps;
  • 2x optical and 6x digital zoom;
  • the ability to record slow-motion videos at 120 and 240 frames per second.

Thanks to a more powerful processor, image processing takes 70% less time than on the “seven”. Apple placed special emphasis on portrait photos. The mode now supports several cool effects, the list of which continues to grow.

Display

The main characteristics that Apple company equipped the iPhone 8 and 8 plus display, similar to the data of the previous model: widescreen LCD display with support for Multi‑Touch and IPS technology, which provides maximum viewing angle and excellent color rendition.

The iPhone 8 screen has a size of 4.7 inches and a resolution of 1337x750, the model 8+ has a corresponding 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. Everything is the same as the “seven” except for the support of new technology – True Tone. This program, using sensors, constantly measures the level of lighting indoors and outdoors, and based on this data it adjusts the white balance on the screen.

What are the advantages of the program:

  • regardless of the time of year and location, the image on the screen is presented as printed on paper;
  • changes in color ratio occur instantly, almost imperceptibly to the human eye.

True Tone adjusts even to bright lighting, so you'll no longer have to squint trying to see lines on the screen outside at midday.

Speaker

According to the manufacturer, the iPhone 8 speaker is 25% more powerful and louder than previous models. But that’s not what impressed users; the sound quality improved significantly when listening with and without headphones. The developers have removed noise, wheezing and other unpleasant sound distortions, so the iPhone 8 is pleasant to listen to even on maximum volume. Changes are also noticeable in relation to the bass; now they sound richer and brighter.

Firmware

Apple operating systems are improving every year. Each subsequent OS took into account the errors of the previous one, so the evolution of modern technologies can be traced based on the characteristics of iPhone software.

A year ago, the iPhone 8 iOS 11 firmware was considered an achievement of the company's developers. In June 2018, the beta version of iOS 12 was launched and received positive reviews almost immediately. What has changed in the software:

  • tactile sensations from using the sensor have improved;
  • data processing speed has increased;
  • Working with multiple tabs has become easier and faster.

Were eliminated iOS problems 11: freezing of augmented reality applications, “heavy” games, bugs when opening Internet pages. Famous bloggers and IT experts spoke in favor of updating the firmware.

Face ID

One of the main features of the iPhone is its specific way of personalization. If in smartphones from other companies data protection is represented by standard security settings options: a code, a special picture or word, then in the iPhone it’s a show.

Face ID or face scanner was developed and introduced by Apple in 2017. The technology has replaced the Touch ID sensor or fingerprint identification. Information about the mathematical image of a face will be stored on the processor and will be inaccessible to ill-wishers.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 8 did not receive Face ID, since the program was developed for the new generation of smartphones. The first model with facial recognition was the iPhone X.

Identification sensor

In iPhone 8, the old and already familiar method of recognition remains - using a fingerprint. Moreover, the model was the last for Apple to use a Touch ID scanner; subsequent smartphones are doomed to have no frames, no Home button, and will have to be unlocked using a face photo.

Settings

After purchasing a new smartphone, the question arises about its activation. A common problem is transferring information, files and music from a previous device.

Instructions on how to set up iPhone 8:

  1. After turning on, a greeting will appear on the screen, move the word “Hello” to the right.
  2. Select the appropriate one from the list of languages.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi network or “cellular communication” and geolocation function.
  4. Set your fingerprint on the Touch ID screen.
  5. Create an access code.
  6. Select the “Applications and Data” option and transfer your old data.
  7. Next, identify yourself using a password.
  8. Set up Siri technology.

The last stage of setup is transferring data from a previous Apple or Android device. Make sure the files are downloaded to the new device.

Price

The cost of the treasured smartphone depends on the presence or absence of the “plus” prefix, the color of the case and the amount of built-in memory. The cost of Athos 8 plus with 256 GB will be 69-71 thousand rubles, whereas a year ago sales started at 80 thousand rubles. The price dropped by 30% in 9-10 months.

It is worth giving credit to Apple, who know how to sell products better than anyone in the world. The cost of iPhone 8 at 40-60 thousand rubles could seem to be an obstacle to mass sales, because in Russia this amount for the majority is equal to two months’ salary. Fortunately, loans and installment plans have already been invented.

It’s difficult to categorically answer the question whether the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are worth the expense. Rumors about the quality and superiority of the gadget over others are justified. But when buying, you need to correctly assess your strengths and not allow a digital gadget to become a cause of financial difficulties.

Announced this fall iPhone of the year 8 would be more logical to call iPhone 7s. And all because the “eight” incorporated a number of improvements to the already existing iPhone: new processor, wireless charger. Externally, the difference between the old and new model is extremely insignificant. From the front, both are the same. The difference lies only in the back side. In the iPhone 8 it is made of glass, while in the iPhone 7 it is aluminum. Well, we’ll figure out what’s so interesting about the eighth iPhone, and why it costs so much.

It just so happened that almost immediately after the presentation of the apple company’s new smartphones in 2017, people began to look askance at the iPhone 8. The reason for this is that it has earned the title of flagship. But the “eight” was only a kind of cosmetic improvement of the iPhone 7 announced a year ago. An aggravating circumstance is that the iPhone 8 is incredibly expensive at the start of sales. The price of a similar, and in some places even more advanced, is at least 10 thousand lower than an Apple smartphone.

In technical terms, the iPhone 8 has very solid characteristics. The smartphone is equipped with a 6-core Apple A11 Bionic processor, 3 GB random access memory, as well as 64 or 256 GB of internal memory. Compared to the iPhone 7, the performance of the built-in cameras has been significantly improved. But the Retina screen remained exactly the same as four years ago - 4.7 inches diagonal, resolution 750x1334 pixels.

Externally, the G8 is not much different from its predecessor. Front side - accurate copy iPhone 7, but the back one received a glass panel. Thanks to this, the smartphone can be charged wirelessly.

Quick Guide

iPhone 8 by standards modern smartphones very miniature. Its dimensions are 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm and its weight is 148 grams. The apple phone feels great in your hands. The only thing I can note is that the body of the device is quite slippery. This applies to the glass backdrop. For this reason, you need to be extremely careful when placing your phone on uneven surfaces; it can simply slip and fall. An option to solve the problem could be to buy a case or a protective bumper: it will protect against falls and the appearance will not deteriorate over time.

There are no problems with carrying a smartphone in the pockets of tight clothes. The ergonomics are familiar. The phone is convenient.

Design and appearance

id="sub3">

The design of the iPhone 8 is nothing new. Outwardly, this is still the same good iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 (underline as appropriate). That is, this is already the fourth iPhone generation with this design.

The changes affected only the rear panel. It is now made of glass rather than aluminum. Thanks to this, you can use wireless charging (purchased separately). When dropped, glass is susceptible to destruction and cracking. This is confirmed by reviews from iPhone 8 buyers who dropped the phone on asphalt, concrete and stones. Evidence of this can be found in a huge number in the photo on the Internet. By the way, the average cost of replacing a broken screen for an iPhone 8 is 16 thousand rubles. In this regard, I recommend that all owners of the device buy a case, bumper, etc. accessories. This will be significantly cheaper than replacing the screen.

iPhone 8 has a very effective oleophobic coating. Although fingerprints appear on the surface, they can be removed very quickly with a cloth and other available materials.

On the front side of the smartphone you can see a 4.7-inch IPS screen with a 2.5D effect (slightly rounded edges) and fairly large frames. Above the display is a speaker for phone calls. On the left you can see a 7 MP front camera, as well as various sensors, including a light sensor, an accelerometer, etc.

Below the screen is the Home button. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner. Everything is standard here.

The back panel of the phone is made of tempered glass. Here you can also see a protruding 12 megapixel camera module with a built-in flash.

The layout of the controls is typical for Apple phones. So, on the left side there is a lever that turns on the silent mode, and just below there are two volume control buttons. On the right side is the on/off button, below is a compartment for nanoSIM-sized SIM cards. It is worth noting that the smartphone supports only one nanoSIM-sized SIM card.

At the bottom end in the center there is Lightning connector(used to connect charging, headphones and interface cable), there is a speaker on the right. Speaker volume on high level. The sound quality is also very decent. The sound is loud, high quality and spacious. The device also uses two microphones: one at the bottom end, the second at the rear of the camera unit. The noise reduction system works averagely; in noisy conditions, your interlocutor hears extraneous sounds.

The phone is powered by a built-in battery. There is support for wireless charging.
The smartphone has IP67 protection. It can be immersed in water to a meter depth and kept there for half an hour. But there is a footnote on Apple's official website that says water damage may be outside the warranty. So you should be careful with this.

The quality of workmanship and assembly of the Apple iPhone 8 deserves the highest praise. Not the least role in this was played by the materials of the case and the sensations they evoke.

Screen. Graphics capabilities

id="sub4">

The iPhone 8 uses a 4.7-inch touch screen that displays 16.7 million colors. Compared to the G8’s display, it’s noticeably weaker. The screen resolution here is only 750x1344 pixels, versus 1440x2960. The pixel density is 326 ppi. For a high-tech company like Apple, this is more of a minus than a plus.

Nevertheless, the picture is clear, the fonts are not grainy, but for fans of the sky-high performance that Korean devices demonstrate, this will not seem enough.

Another talk of the town is the width of the frame around the iPhone 8 display. It is very wide. By at least much wider than competitors. It looks out of date and attracts attention. Still, it would be possible to make them smaller, thereby providing either a larger screen or a smaller body.

iPhone 8 uses True Tone technology. Using the RGB sensor on the front panel, it evaluates lighting conditions and shifts the white balance point. Colors are more natural; for this reason, the picture looks more naturalistic, regardless of the intensity of external lighting. iPhone 8 screen contrast is 1400:1.

Hardware platform: processor, memory, performance

id="sub5">

At my disposal was an Apple iPhone 8 with 64 GB of memory on board. There is also a 256 GB version on sale. Memory is distributed dynamically between thematic sections.

iPhone 8 uses Apple's most advanced processor, the A11 Bionic. This is a 64-bit processor with six main cores. The Bionic prefix means that AI algorithms are supported, this is almost the same thing that is used in the Snapdragon 835 and similar chipsets.

In order not to constantly use the power of the main A11 processor, Apple used the M11 coprocessor, which is responsible for monitoring motion and position sensors. In this way, energy consumption can be stabilized.
The device has 2 GB of RAM. There is no shortage of RAM in the smartphone. User interface pre-installed iOS 11 works very quickly and beautifully. No freezes found. Traditionally, the iPhone demonstrates some of the highest results in synthetic tests.

Communication capabilities

id="sub6">

The main means of communication between the Apple iPhone 8 and a computer is an interface cable or Bluetooth 5.0. The phone is determined as removable disk on any operating system. It is possible to transfer files from an apple phone to a computer.

The smartphone supports Russian LTE networks (A1905), frequency aggregation.

The device supports Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac standards. The maximum wireless network speed reaches 150 Mbit. In standby mode, the user can launch the Wi-Fi Network Wizard. It can search for them in the background and, if necessary, connect to such networks. Work with wireless networks is implemented efficiently. In theory, the iPhone is perfectly suited for surfing the Internet via Wi-Fi.

iPhone 8 has NFC support, there is also the popular payment service Apple Pay, which uses user identification using Touch ID.

The smartphone can also be used as a navigator. GPS and GLONASS navigation are used here. Installed applications work smoothly and quickly. The location is determined with an accuracy of 3 m.

Duration of work

id="sub7">

iPhone 8 is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 1821 mAh. The stated operating time is about 12 hours when using mobile Internet, 12 hours of music playback, 40 hours of audio playback.
The battery capacity has decreased compared to the iPhone 7, but the battery life remains the same. This is due to optimized hardware and the Apple A11 Bionic chip.

Under testing conditions, with a number of calls of 25 - 30 minutes per day, and listening to an mp3 player through a headset for 3 hours, with Wi-Fi/4G always on, the device worked for 20 hours. When continuously watching video, the device lasted 10 hours under test conditions, and when listening only to music - 1.5 days. If you use the phone as a navigator, it can last for 3.5 hours. If you disable data transfer, the phone will work for 2 days.

To be honest, these are not the best indicators for premium smartphones. The same one works exactly 2 times longer, and - 1.5 times longer.

The phone charges in about two hours.

iPhone 8 supports Qi wireless charging. To charge, you need to buy a separate accessory. Apple wireless charging costs about 6,000 - 7,000 rubles.

User Interface and Operating System

id="sub8">

Apple iPhone 8 comes pre-installed with operating system iOS system 11.

So, in iMessage app synchronization of messages between devices appeared, end-to-end encryption data and support for payments between users. When logging in from a new device, all messages and images are downloaded from iCloud, and if the user deletes a sent message, it is deleted from everywhere.

Changes in iOS 11 affected almost all standard programs. HEVC support in the Camera application allows you to make videos less voluminous while maintaining the same quality, and photos are saved in the new HEIF format, instead of JPEG.

In iOS 11, the company has completely updated the Control Center interface. Firstly, it now consists of one page, while in iOS 10 there were two. Secondly, it actively uses the 3D Touch function to adjust various parameters. Looks much simpler and more intuitive.

The Photos app now has three options for processing Live Photos. Users were able to remove frames from the middle of live photos, loop video playback, and apply shooting effects such as long exposures. According to the developers, Live Photos will become a real tool for digital creativity.

The Apple Maps application has received an update. It now includes indoor navigation for airports and shopping centers. In navigation mode, maps will prevent the user from being distracted by messages, and will even allow you to send quick responses to incoming requests in iMessage.

iOS 11 has radically updated the store interface Apps Store. The application is designed in the style Apple Music with large headings, fonts and covers. New sections “App of the Day” and “Game of the Day” have appeared on the main page of the store. In the "Games" tab, application information includes information about in-game purchases.

Augmented reality technology deserves special mention. It provides fast and reliable tracking of movement and ambient light.

iOS 11 includes a new Files app for working with local files and data in cloud services. Supported iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive and others. From the application you can retrieve files for attachment in your email client.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id="sub9">

iPhone 8 received a 12 megapixel main camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture. There is optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The camera received optical image stabilization, a six-element lens, and a True Tone Quad-LED flash with Slow Sync function.

It also has a BSI sensor, autofocus with Focus Pixels, touch focusing, expanded color range for photos and Live Photos, HDR when taking photos.

The quality of photos taken from the iPhone 8 camera is extremely high. Takes similar pictures Portrait mode now called Portrait Lightning and artificially changes the lighting of the scene. For this purpose, there is a scene depth algorithm in the Apple A11 Bionic processor. It cuts out the face of the person you are filming, changes the light, distorts the color, etc. There are several new filters.

It is also worth noting that the smartphone can record 4K video at 24, 30 or 60 fps, 1080p HD video at 30 or 60 fps, and 720p HD video at 30 fps. There is optical image stabilization, optical zoom, 6x digital zoom, slow-motion video shooting with a resolution of 1080p and a frequency of 120 or 240 fps, face and figure recognition, video recording in HEVC and H.264 formats.

The front camera in the iPhone 8 has a resolution of 7 megapixels. It is noteworthy that selfies can now be taken in “studio light” mode, in which the lighting of the person and the background changes. The settings are analyzed by the True Depth depth sensor, which Apple installed for the first time in the front camera. On the street and in good lighting, the technology works great, but in difficult conditions the picture becomes blurry.

Results

id="sub10">

In terms of its technical equipment, iPhone 8 is a direct competitor to Huawei Honor 9, Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), Xiaomi Mi6, Huawei P10. The Apple device has a familiar design, an average screen, powerful hardware, and a standard set of telecommunications capabilities. The only thing that distinguishes an Apple smartphone from its competitors is more high quality camera. At the same time, the device costs 2-2.5 times more expensive than its competitors, and this the main problem. What’s even more surprising is that the iPhone 8 in the minimum configuration is sold more expensive than the more advanced one. It's just the finish line!

In addition, the iPhone 8 has a number of obvious disadvantages. And the most significant is the short battery life. On average, you have to charge your phone at the end of each day. Under heavy load, the battery lasts only 20 hours. It's unnerving.

It is also worth noting that constantly detected in iOS 11 software errors. Thank God this is being fixed with the next update.

What's worrying is the phone's glass body, which can easily break just by accidentally dropping the phone. It is better not to use iPhone 8 without a case or bumper.

Taking into account all the pros and cons, I note that the iPhone 8 is extremely decent smartphone. True, it should cost no more than 35,000 rubles for the version with 64 GB of internal memory. In reality, the price is about 50,000 rubles. Hence the conclusion - there is no point in buying an iPhone 8. It’s better to take a closer look at alternative smartphones with prices up to 30,000 rubles. , which are worth paying close attention to.

I noticed a very interesting thing. In two days active use new eights, I showed them to many friends. And the scenario was always the same - everyone snatches the 8 Plus out of my hands, but it remains unattended. Makes me wonder... What did Apple do so cool in the new generation? We'll figure it out iPhone review 8Plus.

Bundling or Apple's boundless greed

The box is now painted in the color of the iPhone inside. This is, of course, great, but the company would be better off spending the money to put a Lightning to USB C cable inside, which, by the way, costs 2 thousand rubles separately. Using it, we could at least connect the new iPhone to a MacBook, or to another modern laptop. Fortunately, USB C is now being actively implemented by everyone. By the way, a wide range of models original iPhone starting from 4S m to X, presented on the apple-original website, at low prices!

But no! Instead, the Cupertino team left the outdated 1-amp charger. From the master's shoulder, so to speak.

In addition, inside are regular wired EarPods with a Lightning plug, an adapter from it to a mini-jack and... stickers. There is nothing else interesting. You can see for yourself by watching my unboxing.

Design - the same thing for four years

The new plus makes several impressions. Here are the key ones.

Lord, how healthy he is!

The iPhone 8 Plus is the worst example of a smartphone with a 5.5-inch screen. Why did I raise this topic again, since this was already clear with the example of the 6 Plus? Because this perfectly demonstrates the manufacturer’s relationship with its fans: “everything is for their sake, so that they feel good, so that each new generation is more comfortable than the previous one.” Yeah!

The market is full of smartphones with the same screen, but in a more compact body. Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi have been particularly successful in this.

A smartphone is inconvenient anytime, anywhere. It barely fits into the front pants pocket. If you still shoved it there, got into the car and drove off, God forbid, they will call you. It’s simply impossible to take the device out of your pocket while moving and not dig it into a pole.

However, a large display is truly a boon. Surf the web, scroll through Instagram feed, typing on a normal keyboard - doing all this is much more convenient than on. When I was using the latter, I found myself thinking that I needed to stop and concentrate in order to type without errors. Plus allows you to use it in a more relaxed way.

How to show off now?

For the fourth year in a row, the same front panel. Nothing, literally nothing new.

Oh yes! Apple now claims the glass is 50 percent stronger. I didn't check this, but I'm sure one of you will do it sooner or later.

But I checked the device for something else - scratch resistance and new iPhone failed the test.

In just a week and a half of use, scratches appeared on both the display and the back cover. This is completely out of the question!

All the changes are at the back - now we don’t have smoothly polished metal, but tempered glass. But with an oleophobic coating, which is of very high quality.

There is no exact information on the type of glass. They say this is the last generation Gorilla Glass, and this, if anything, is the fifth version.

Such a panel was installed at the back for one single purpose. The nosebleed smartphone needed at least some innovation, so it was decided to place wireless charging inside. However, this cannot be called an innovation, because “skis” have been actively using this technology in their flagships for four years now.

Since a special coil is used under glass for this purpose, we had to reduce battery. We write down 225 mAh as a loss (the 7 Plus had 2900 mAh, but now it’s 2675).

He's never black!

Have you looked at the “ass”? We have already realized that black iPhones from the current line are no longer available. Now we have space gray or Space Gray. Actually, as it was before.

Personally, I don't like it. The back panel looks okay, but it's not exactly a "wow" thing.

Things are even worse with other colors. Look at the golden one, the back of which is white in the light, but is “rusty” indoors?

The silver version is the most boring. For conservatives and those who are not at all embarrassed by the huge frames on the sides of the screen.

It slides, but not like that

One of the main tactile-visual iPhone 8 Plus specifications— it’s still slippery, but it’s not comparable to its metal predecessor (not Jet Black). The glass on the back definitely adds a touch of grip. Well, how? Not much, 30-40 percent.

However, due to its large size, dropping the smartphone on the floor and now saying goodbye to both glasses is still a piece of cake. So purchasing a cover is strictly required.

If anything, iFixit has already disassembled the new product and gave it 6 out of 10 points on the maintainability scale. This means that if something happens, repairing a new product will be more difficult than the same seven (7 points).

Plays louder

As in its predecessor, the sound comes from two speakers at once: from the main one at the bottom and the speaker at the top. The latter sounds quieter, but adds good stereo.

The new Plus plays louder than the old one. By 25% according to official statements. I’ll check this later in a separate review, where I’ll compare both generations of devices, but for now we’ll take Apple’s word for it.

The sound itself is of high quality and loud, not even above average, but rather closer to the maximum of what I have heard. And of course, the 8 Plus is a little louder. Another argument in favor of buying its older brother.

Little things

The antenna frames are now very short and visible only at the ends. If anything, the base of the case is made of 7000-series aluminum (it doesn’t bend, that is), and Apple also talks about some kind of “steel base.” Apparently it's inside the case.

The physical buttons are made very carefully and do not wobble in their grooves. Not a single manufacturer of Android smartphones pays attention to this - everything rattles like a rattle. But not the iPhone.

Don't worry about the protruding camera. Here we have sapphire glass, so it will be extremely difficult to scratch the lenses.

The display is nothing new. Practically...

There's nothing new about the iPhone 8 Plus screen. Unless they added support for True Tone technology. The bottom line is that a special sensor next to the front camera monitors the ambient light and adjusts the temperature of the screen colors to a specific situation. In short, the screen becomes either very yellow (in a room with low lighting) or slightly yellowish (in bright sun).

And no, it's not Night Shift. This setting works separately. If, of course, you activate it.

Compared iPhone screens 8 Plus and . That's what came out of it.

If you compare it head-on, it becomes obvious that the 8 Plus display renders colors a little more pleasantly. The youngest ones are sharper and have a slight green tint.

A strong deviation along the diagonal axis shows that this is a very ordinary IPS matrix. Yes, it’s high quality, no doubt about it, but it still floats like a whitish fog. This is not AMOLED.

Apple tirelessly claims that the screen here is “Retina HD”, that it is new and all redesigned, that it supports the extended P3 color gamut and all that, but in reality the display easily looks like someone’s Optic AMOLED.

What's new in hardware?

The company from Cupertino wanted to make a flagship at minimal cost, but overestimated its strength and was embarrassed. Pavel Gorodnitsky collected four stories at once that prove: the iPhone 8 is a stain on Apple’s reputation.

When you rape the same design for the fourth time in a row, there can be no compromises or failures.

Apple thought differently: Tim Cook approved the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but did not track the quality of the devices at all.

Either the boss was busy with the iPhone X, or in general did not doubt his team, but the fact remains: now there is a risk that the iPhone 8 will turn out to be the same tragic device for Apple as the Galaxy Note 7 was for Samsung a year ago.

Disgusting performance

In fact, everything started out quite well. Journalists praised the glass body of the new product, took high-quality selfies and enjoyed the main camera. Moreover, the authoritative service DxOMark conducted a study and named the iPhone 8 Plus camera the best in the history of smartphones.

After such a start, it seemed that Apple had again created a brilliant product: there is nothing new in it (except for wireless charging), but you still want to buy it. At a minimum, because of the pleasant-to-touch body, and at a maximum, because of the excellent (from hearsay) photo module.

In parallel with the odes to the camera, IT publications distributed another resounding headline: “The A11 processor is comparable in power to the chip installed in the MacBook Pro.” Considering that Apple smartphones are almost always remarkably optimized, there was hope that the iPhone 8 would run at turbo speed.

It cannot be said that the same iPhone 7 Plus lags or slows down a lot, but periodically (very rarely) it thinks for a second or two, and only then does what it is asked to do. Accordingly, they expected a cosmic reaction from the iPhone 8 Plus, but in vain: this device was probably programmed to limit its performance. It dulls even in basic applications - several journalists and dozens of upset users report this at once.

In addition, the new “Plus” completely lacks RAM: if the conventional Galaxy Note 8 can keep dozens of applications open, then in the iPhone everything is different - programs slam shut almost immediately, but remain in the list of recently launched ones.

General conclusion: there was no revolutionary leap in speed. If you are not excited by a glass case, a decent camera, or the knowledge that you are holding a current iPhone in your hands, it is better to take the proven “seven”. It is both cheaper and more practical.

However, there is an option that in one of the next versions of iOS 11 the problem with the processor will be solved. But obviously nothing can be done with the RAM - three gigabytes are desperately missing.

iPhone bombs

Sometimes smartphones explode - this is unpleasant and scary, but most often the owners are to blame for the incidents, who use cheap pirated cables, and then download their rights and demand compensation. The iPhone 8 has a completely different fate: in Asia (Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong), three devices that were charged via a proprietary cable and adapter swelled and simply split in half. Similar cases have also been recorded in Canada and Greece.

The display naturally separated from the rest of the body, and pictures of the mutilated devices ended up on all major IT resources. Apple immediately promised to take control of the situation, but so far the percentage of defective batteries does not exceed the permissible limit, which means it will be extremely difficult to find out the cause of the fires.

A small forecast: there is a feeling that there will be more and more unstuck displays in the coming weeks. The symptoms of the first victims are too similar - probably everything is as serious as the iPhone 6, which broke when slightly bent. Only those iPhones were safe for life and health, but these ones can easily lead to burns.

Cracking in the speakers

Another massive Apple failure is the release of the iPhone 8 with unfinished software. Dozens of users have noted that during a normal conversation on the phone, an annoying noise is periodically heard, most similar to interference. The same problem, unfortunately for Apple, was revealed to journalists from reputable media, so the corporation quickly blamed everything on raw iOS version and rolled out the update.

This is a normal solution if you forget that:

1. Inside the iPhone 8 is exactly the same as the iPhone 7. How the ill-fated crack got there is a mystery. This is an obvious negligence of the testers - they probably thought that the world had long switched to instant messengers and did not communicate “by voice”;

2. Not everyone has the opportunity to quickly update the firmware. Sometimes users download updates and then take a long time to get the iPhone to install them;

3. The noises did not stop for ten whole days.

Once again: an emergency software update is the right decision, but basic functions(and calls are still one of the main options) need to be checked more carefully than in the case of the iPhone 8.

What else is bad?

"eights" tend to crack when dropped. Everything is logical - it's glass.

3. Under heavy load, the iPhone 8 not only lags, but also heats up. Testers have already found that the body temperature increases even in standard applications, not to mention games.

What's the result?

"eight" will fail in sales: numerous notes and reviews about the device's disadvantages will clearly influence the decision of those who choose between the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

By the way, it’s also scary now for the “top ten”: even if a proven (seemingly) iPhone has such problems, then what will happen to a completely new smartphone?

One of new Apple products is the iPhone 8 smartphone. The gadget was first shown on annual presentation company in September 2017. In addition to the standard eight, the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X models were presented in Cupertino.

Although the iPhone 8 is not a flagship, this did not stop it from becoming one of the best-selling Apple smartphones of all. Let's consider what is special about this device, as well as specifications iPhone 8, review of interface, camera, design and performance test.

Specifications

After iPhone release 7 Apple decided not to release the 7s model, but went straight to the eighth generation. This move is explained by new technologies, functions and design of the smartphone. All options are superior to previous models.

Parameter: Meaning:

Main –

12 MP (f/2.6 aperture) + flash

Front – 7 MP (aperture f/2.2)

Built-in memory (specifications): Apple iPhone 8 256 G.B. or 64 GB
RAM: 2 GB
CPU: A11 Bionic+
Battery: 1821 mAh

Other characteristics: Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, LTE 4G, IP67 protection, NFC chip, fast charging, Air Power support

Unboxing

The smartphone comes in a classic white box with Apple logo and device name. The iPhone 8 package remains the same as previous phone models.

Full list of box contents:

  • iPhone 8 device;
  • Charger;
  • Lightning USB cable;
  • Ear Pods;
  • SIM clip;
  • Adapter for connecting headphones to the Lightning port;
  • Instructions;
  • Set of branded stickers.

As you know, Apple stopped adding a standard headphone jack back in the iPhone 7. Along with the presentation of the seventh generation of smartphones, Tim Cook presented wireless headphones Air Pods.

Many users expected that the new headset would be included with the iPhone 8, since the corporation has repeatedly announced the end of the era of wired accessories. But it turned out to be unprofitable for Apple to add headphones for more than $200 to a standard box.

Assembly and design

At first glance, the iPhone 8 looks like a very compact and neat smartphone. Its design is no different from the 8 Plus model. The body is made of aluminum and glass.

If in previous models designers focused specifically on aluminum, now this material fades into the background. The back cover is made entirely of durable tempered glass. Because of this, the gadget acquired new characteristic differences. The case shines beautifully in the sun, gets dirty less and fits well in the hand. Also, scratches on glass are less noticeable than on aluminum.

The front frames of the case are made of aluminum. This makes the ends of the smartphone durable and resistant to most physical damage. At the bottom there is a screen unlock button with built-in Touch ID. This is probably last generation iPhones that use a fingerprint scanner, because the iPhone X now has Face ID.

At the top we see the front camera, proximity sensor, microphone and earpiece.

On the side faces there are power and volume buttons. Their appearance and functionality have not changed in any way. Everything is done in the best Apple traditions.

Among the disadvantages of the new design, users note the glass back cover. Although it looks beautiful and stylish, glass has an almost 100% guarantee that it will break if dropped. Repairs will cost a pretty penny. Official service centers Apple is asking $349 to replace the back panel of the phone. You will have to be very careful with your iPhone 8 or buy protective bumper cases.

Available colors:

  • Silver;
  • Gold;
  • Space Gray;
  • Red (Product RED) – limited edition.

Housing light shades iPhone 8 practically does not get dirty. At least upon close inspection the prints and small scratches not visible. The Space Gray version cannot boast of such indicators. Against a dark background, all dirt stands out strongly.

Screen

The display quality of the iPhone 8 is no different from the seven. Same resolution and color. Apple has already released new solutions with the anniversary iPhone X.

The pixel density of 1334 by 750 is quite decent for a 4.7-inch screen. It is almost impossible to see individual pixels, so the image clarity, although not ideal, is quite decent.

The iPhone 8 has support for 3D Touch, a technology that recognizes the type of taps on the screen. Also, the DCI-P3 color gamut is used, there is function True Tone (realistic reproduction of all shades) and Night mode for easy reading in dark time days.

Camera

The cameras are no different from those used in the seven. The main sensor has a resolution of 12 MP, the front one – 7 MP. The only difference between the cameras of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 is the Slow Sync flash that the new phone has. It allows you to better determine the level of illumination environment and makes photos brighter without glare.

Examples of photos taken with the main camera of the iPhone 8 show that the smartphone does an excellent job of taking pictures in light and dark. The colors are very realistic, there is good focusing and no blur:

As for video shooting mode, the iPhone 8 camera beats previous models. A 4K video recording mode is now available. If you plan to frequently shoot and edit videos on an iPhone, we recommend that you immediately take care of having accounts in different clouds or buy a 256 GB smartphone, since high quality videos take up a lot of space in the device’s memory.

The 7 MP front camera also shows good results shooting. Selfies are clear and there are several useful filters for color correction. If you are used to editing photos or setting camera settings manually, you will have to download additional applications from App Store.

Front camera shot (on the left – without a filter, on the right – using a standard filter):

Battery

The 1821 mAh battery is a rather modest characteristic compared to modern smartphones. But Apple is good at increasing battery life through the perfect combination of software and technical components.

The iPhone 8 battery lasts more than a day without recharging, provided that you use the Internet and make calls over the cellular network. If you plan to watch videos often, you will have to charge the gadget more often.

Also, iPhone 8 supports fast charging and is compatible with Air Power, an external wireless charging station. It is enough to place the gadget on the flat Air Power case to begin the process of filling the battery level.

Performance

The performance of the smartphone is provided by the A11 Bionic chip, which is the latest developed by Apple. The processor has 6 cores - 2 active and 4 cores that operate in standby mode and are loaded only as needed. For example, when you run several applications at the same time or turn on a game with complex graphics. This allows rational use of battery life and lowers the temperature of the device.

2 GB of RAM is enough for both everyday tasks and games. The benchmark results show 10092 points on multiple cores and 4210 points on a single core. This result is even better than the 8 Plus model.

Sound

Numerous iPhone 8 reviews show a sound test of the smartphone. Music sounds equally good at both low and high frequencies. The speaker copes well with tracks of different genres. The conversational microphone conveys the owner's voice realistically. No noises, wheezing or other third-party sounds are observed.

With sound for smartphones and headsets from Apple problems No. You can get high-quality sound even with standard Ear Pods. They are quite strong and durable.

For those who want to keep up with the latest technology, it is recommended to buy Air Pods of the first or second generation. They're expensive, but with a headset like this you get more hands-free control over your playback.

Interface

The operating system on the iPhone 8 is iOS 11. This OS is the latest from Apple. Immediately after setting up your phone for the first time, you will be prompted to install new versions of the eleventh system.

Interface features include improved user experience, support for new gestures and voice commands when working with the Siri assistant. Also, in Cupertino they finally finalized the settings window, made the auto-brightness mode available and slightly changed the arrangement of elements in the Control Center.

Other Features

Other features and characteristics of the iPhone 8 include support for the IP67 standard. It makes the case waterproof and protects it from sand getting into the lid. Note that the gadget can stay at a shallow depth (up to a meter) for only 30 minutes. Longer “swims” can lead to breakdown.

Also, the smartphone has a built-in NFC chip. With its help, you can use the Apple Pay wallet and contactless payment mode.

Bottom line

iPhone 8 is decent new smartphone from Apple. If you need a phone primarily for fast work and you don't chase the most good characteristics, this device is for you. Those who want to buy a smartphone with the best screen or are determined to take perfect photos are advised to take a closer look at the iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X.
