Although the name Doze sounds like cough syrup, it's Marshmallow's new and truly impressive battery-saving feature. When you leave your phone or tablet on the table in the kitchen or anywhere else, the device goes into hibernation mode. Doze uses an accelerometer to detect when you're sleeping, so it won't turn on if you're walking or driving. To activate it, the device must be located at one point certain time. Google has given developers the power to decide whether their app notifications can break through Doze mode. When Android updated to LolliPop 5.0, we all saw that a clunky OS can look stylish. Material Design, which came with the “five”, and now continues to develop. In Marshmallow 6.0, Android did not look any different - there is, of course, a difference between 5.0 and 6.0, but it is not as striking as KitKat and LolliPop had. But a lot of things have changed inside the system itself. What exactly – we will discuss further.

Loading applications in Android 6.0 now happens beautifully - programs seem to open from icons, regardless of where they are located on the desktop. In the menu of installed applications, everything is also different: now, instead of flipping through several pages of the menu in search of the desired program, you can simply scroll the list. So new Android capabilities 6.0 may seem inconvenient at first: before, let's say, you knew exactly which menu page you needed to scroll to in order to launch the application - and many did this automatically, without thinking - but now you have to put up with quickly scrolling through the list and try to get to the desired icon from the first times.

In order not to search for a long time, you can move frequently used applications to the desktop, say, combine them into folders or install widgets - you will say, and you will be right. But Google also offers a third way: now the 4 most frequently used programs will hang in a separate block in the application menu. So to speak, a quick access menu. The order of programs in this “four” and its “composition” can change not only based on how often you use this or that application, but also when exactly you prefer to use them. Thus, if you have a smartphone/tablet in your hands - not only for checking social networks and games, and you and your gadget live according to a schedule - you go for morning runs on Mon-Wed-Fri, on Saturdays you read books, and on Sundays you prefer to listen random selections on Soundcloud - the system will take this into account, and in the application menu header it will look different every day.

Plus, applications in this menu can be searched by alphabetical index: if you scroll, sticking to the right edge of the display, you will see the alphabet. When there are really a lot of applications, this option can be useful. Although the easiest way to search for the program you need is to use the search bar, located in the same menu above the four favorite programs. Start entering the name - the system will find the desired program in the list of installed ones or in Google Play, if suddenly it is not on your device.

One more thing: the new version of Android offers to delete applications directly from the desktop. Let us remind you that in previous versions In the OS, it was only possible to clear the desktop of icons, and deleting applications was only possible from the menu. Now, when you hold an icon, you can choose the option to delete - only the icon or the application itself.

Notifications

Here's what, and the update of this menu back in Android LolliPop confused many users. The fact is that the menu that allows you to give priority to certain applications to notify you about updates was in fact of little use to anyone - it was done, perhaps, with the best intentions, but it did not look like something practical. Now, being in the quick settings menu, the “stub” has every chance of becoming useful.

The “Do not disturb” mode in the new Android has three variations: “Complete silence”, “Alarm clock only” and “Important only”, which determine when and which applications can notify you about something. Each column in Android 6.0 can be configured in meticulous detail, and this is the second point that makes Marshmallow almost the most customizable operating system. Rate:

Tapping and holding on a piece of text of interest is nothing new. However, now the “Copy/Paste” menu and other functions do not pop up in the screen header, as before, but directly above the selected characters. So, Android 6.0. There is a decent amount of new here, although not as much as there was in . There are more than 50 changes in total, but only a few of the main ones. Let's go through them.

App permissions

We believe that many of us remember that when installing an application on our smartphone (yes, with Android on board), first a message appears, usually the size of the entire screen, where there are several icons, a lot of inscriptions, and the “Accept” button is located at the bottom right "(Accept). Safety is safety, but you also have to work, right? Presumably, this is what Google thought when adding new functionality to Android 6.0. Now there will be no list of permissions during installation - instead, messages about individual permissions will appear when they are requested. For example, if an application wants to access GPS for the first time, or wants to use a microphone, camera, and so on. The selected option will be remembered and you will no longer be bombarded with messages, but the permissions can be changed in the settings.

The most interesting thing is that such a thing was made back in . It was called App Ops - this is a special permission manager. It was hidden from users, but a way to enable it was found and described in detail. And then Google simply removed it from the system so that there would be no unnecessary complaints.

After all, if you look at it, how does such permission blocking work? This is exactly the issue that was resolved in Android 6.0. Now, if a program, for example, “knocks” on the Internet, but is prohibited from doing so, then everything will be arranged for it as if there is no connection. Or like a camera, GPS, Bluetooth, etc. are not available at the moment. This will allow you to show the appropriate error message, but not crash with a system exception.

In addition, developers will be able to take into account the new function of the system. That is, they will know whether the problem is a permission ban or whether something really “fell off and doesn’t work.” This means that if you have blocked something, the application will tell you: I can’t work, you forbade me! And in the case of App Ops and Android 4.3, it was impossible to find out why something was not working - that’s why the manager was removed.

In any case, the new Android 6.0 feature provides even greater control over applications and greater system security.

Finger scanner support

A few days before Google I/O 2015, information began to appear that Android 6.0 was among the innovations support will be included fingerprint scanners. Do you know that Android 5.0 solved all, all, all problems with energy consumption? Do you know? But Google is now not sure about this. But this feature was presented as one of the main ones: here you have a new one that launches and runs applications more efficiently, and one that saves battery power in ways you never even dreamed of. In reality, everything turned out to be not as good as on paper. And now it’s the second half of 2015, and we are being offered a new panacea for rapid battery depletion.

Doze mode will provide energy savings at such a level that wow! In theory, of course. And this theory sounds something like this: than more smartphone or the tablet is in sleep mode, the better. On that Google times intends to euthanize them even more often. At the same time, so that the user does not miss notifications or calls, the devices will do this when the person is not nearby.

Let us remind you that the Terminator and the Matrix are just around the corner, that is, a modern phone has so many sensors that it knows where it is, whether it is moving or not, and whether there are people nearby at all. Actually, this is the whole idea - if there are no people nearby, then you can “sleep”, or, in other words, all background processes will be turned off, leaving only the most minimum required for work.

That is, Doze is activated if you leave your mobile device and go somewhere, or just go to sleep - in this case, the discharge rate will be noticeably reduced. We'll see how this works in practice, but the idea doesn't look stupid anyway.

USB Type-C support

The USB Type-C standard or simply USB-C is gradually gaining popularity. Let us briefly recall that it appeared along with the USB 3.1 specification, one of the main features of which was doubling the interface bandwidth to 10 Gbps relative to USB 3.0. Well, USB Type-C is a connection type that involves a new connector that can be the same on all devices.

Of course, the ability to connect a cable to either side is not the main feature of USB Type-C. On top of this, it adds many additional features, including advanced charging capabilities according to the USB Power Delivery 2.0 specification. In particular we're talking about about a current of 1.5 and 3.0 A at a voltage of 5 V.

Android 6.0, as you guessed, supports USB Type-C, and with it also advanced charging modes. No, we are not only talking about increased amperage, which gives an increase in charging speed, but also about things like recharging other devices. The point is that it will be possible to charge phones, smartphones and tablets from each other: a phone from a tablet, a smartphone from a tablet, and even a tablet from a smartphone, as well as other “perverted” options. It is unlikely that this function will be in demand everywhere and by everyone, but in certain situations it will be useful.

In addition, MIDI keyboards can be connected to devices running Android 6.0 and with a USB Type-C connector. This will further expand the multimedia component of Android.

Search Google Now in apps

In fact, this feature is called “Google Now on Tap” and it is called if you long press the Home button. Once launched, Google Now will “scan” what’s on the screen and offer a card with additional information.

The idea there is the following. Let's say you are discussing with someone a movie or a new music album, a place, and so on. The context from your message screen is clear and Google Now can understand it. Holding the Home button for a long time will result in this very context being recognized and according to it, a card with information will be offered: information about the film from the IMDb database, information about the country, information about the album, and so on.

Moreover Google features Now on Tap is noticeably broader - information can be drawn not only from Google search, but also from installed applications. The main thing here is that the corresponding functionality is implemented by their developers - they provide the ability to index data inside programs.

Others in Google's words Now on Tap is a kind of smart assistant that works in any application and gives helpful hints when needed. Theoretically, nothing should interfere with its functioning, unless the developer creates a completely atypical application interface.

Chrome Custom Tabs

Any developer can embed a browser into their Android application. For this purpose, a corresponding component has been created that ensures that the web page rendering engine works inside your application. But there is one unpleasant moment - all this has nothing to do with the main system browser. That is, your entered passwords, search history, saved Cookies, and so on are not available there.

Now this problem can be solved by embedding a "piece" in your application Chrome browser. In fact, the functionality will remain the same, but you won’t have to re-enter passwords, and the sites will remember you.

Using the clipboard, or “copy-paste,” in Android is not always easy. This has been talked about for a long time. Google clearly remained partial to the Multi Window mode introduced by Samsung on Galaxy Note II in 2012. In Android 6.0, the first shoots of this functionality began to be seen at the system level, and not from the manufacturer of smartphones and tablets. True, it is hidden very deeply there and is activated by adding the latest version of TWRP to the firmware. Also, this only works on the Nexus 9 tablet.

Google's version splits the screen into quadrants - you can download from 1 to 4 applications at once. With one thing everything is clear. Two pieces are located next to each other, dividing the desktop vertically or horizontally. When you open three programs, the screen is divided in half: one application is loaded in one half, and the other two are loaded in the second half. Well, with the four, everything is already clear - each application is allocated its own “square”.

It also opens from the task manager. All this still works poorly and is terribly buggy, so we do not exclude the possibility that this function will not be in the final version of Android 6.0.

Offline mode Google Maps and YouTube
