iPhone 6 plus camera specs. Comparison of iPhone models

Detailed review of iPhone 6s Plus.

In September 2015, Apple introduced the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus - updated versions their first smartphones with large screens. The design of the new products remains the same, but this should not be alarming - the devices have been more than completely updated. Especially the iPhone 6s Plus, which was the first Apple smartphone with a camera with optical image stabilization. In this detailed iPhone review 6s Plus analyzed all the improvements of the smartphone and found out whether the smartphone is passable or can attract everyone's attention.

Current prices for iPhone 6s Plus in Russia (March 2019)

  • iPhone 6s Plus 32 GB - 29,990 rubles.
  • iPhone 6s Plus 16 GB “Like New” - 22,990 rubles.
  • iPhone 6s Plus 32 GB “Like New” - 25,990 rubles.
  • iPhone 6s Plus 64 GB “Like New” - 25,990 rubles.
  • iPhone 6s Plus 128 GB “Like New” - 27,990 rubles.

Design

The iPhone 6s Plus is difficult to distinguish from its predecessor, the iPhone 6 Plus, in appearance. To be honest, the only thing that clearly gives away the new product is the letter S on the back cover of the smartphone. Otherwise, the iPhone 6s Plus copied the previous model from the line in terms of the shape of the case, its components and connectors.

However, this very letter S is quite enough for the owner to indicate that he has an iPhone 6s Plus. It is noteworthy that the last time the letter S appeared on the back of the iPhone was only in 2009, when Apple introduced the iPhone 3GS. IN next S versions The company abandoned it for its smartphones.

The iPhone 6s Plus has virtually no visible differences from the iPhone 6 Plus, but there are plenty of subtle ones. First of all, the dimensions of the smartphone have changed, albeit slightly. The thickness of the iPhone 6s Plus increased by 0.2 mm and became 7.3 mm versus 7.1 mm for the iPhone 6 Plus. The weight of the smartphone also increased - from 172 g to 192 g. From the ear it seems that 20 g is not the most significant increase in weight, but iPhone 6 Plus users will feel it in the first second after picking up the smartphone. At the same time, the iPhone 6s Plus, of course, did not become any particularly heavy.

Quite imperceptibly, the iPhone 6s Plus has grown in width and height, by exactly 0.1 mm in each case:

  • Dimensions iPhone 6s Plus: 158.2×77.9×7.3 mm, weight 192 g.
  • Dimensions iPhone 6 Plus: 158.1×77.8×7.1 mm, weight 172 g.

In the iPhone 6s Plus, not only the dimensions of the case have changed, but also the material from which it is made. In its new smartphone, Apple used 7000 series aluminum, which is characterized by increased strength. This alloy is used for the production of parts in the aircraft, space and automotive industries. Now, with easy Apple hands, and for the production of cases for smartphones.

The transition to a more durable material became a necessity for Apple. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been criticized a lot for being very lightweight. According to reviews from some users, the cases of their smartphones bent even after usually carrying the devices in their trouser pockets. Despite the fact that there were few such reviews, this story created enough noise. In the case of its new smartphones, Apple decided not to tempt fate and equip them with more durable cases that definitely cannot be bent that easily. The first bend tests confirm that Apple's idea was a success. The iPhone 6s Plus can be bent, but it takes a lot of effort to do so. In other words, when normal use smartphone, the risk of bending its body is minimized.

In all other respects, the iPhone 6s Plus is copy of iPhone 6 Plus. The camera protrudes on the back surface of the case, the antenna strips remain in place, just like all the buttons and connectors. To be more precise, on the right side of the iPhone 6s Plus there is a power button and a SIM card tray, on the left there is a call mode switch and volume control buttons, and on the bottom there are two microphones, a speaker, a 3.5 mm audio output and a connector. Lighting.

Since the form and iPhone sizes The 6s Plus is as similar as possible to the iPhone 6 Plus; the smartphone doesn’t feel anything special in use. The device is large, impressive and more convenient to use, which is quite obvious, with two hands. When using a smartphone with one hand, most people simply will not be able to reach all interface elements.

iPhone 6s Plus was released in four colors - the usual dark gray, silver and gold, as well as a new color " pink gold" Launching a smartphone in this Apple color is targeting China, where pink is extremely popular. However, representatives of the fair sex around the world will also not refuse an iPhone in such a pleasant color

The iPhone 6s Plus package includes a traditional set: charger (5V, 1A), Lightning to USB cable, EarPods, flyers, stickers and a SIM card slot eject clip. The packaging itself is no different in shape and size from the packaging of the iPhone 6 Plus, but in appearance has a noticeable difference. On the front surface of the box there is an image of a smartphone with a beautiful illustration on it, which is one of the backgrounds of the main iOS screen 9.

Display

iPhone 6s Plus has a 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (401 pixels/inch). The main screen parameters have not changed compared to the iPhone 6 Plus; apparently, Apple does not see the point of getting involved in a display race with other manufacturers who equip their new smartphones with screens with much higher resolution. It's important to note that there's no need to give the iPhone 6s Plus a minus for this, as Apple continues to strike the perfect balance between image quality and screen load on the processor and battery.

Declared brightness iPhone display 6s Plus is 500 cd/m2, in fact it is higher - up to 560 cd/m2. This brightness, coupled with an excellent anti-reflective coating, makes it possible to comfortably use a smartphone outdoors on sunny days. Both images and text are perfectly visible, even when the iPhone 6s Plus screen is exposed to direct sunlight. Minimum brightness iPhone 6s Plus display is 4.8 cd/m2. The automatic brightness adjustment function does its job well. Even sudden changes in brightness are performed without any flicker.

In addition to the anti-glare coating, the iPhone 6s Plus display also has an oleophobic coating. It can be confidently called effective. Leaving fingerprints on a smartphone screen is problematic, but they can be removed without much difficulty. Protective glass iPhone 6s Plus has improvements over iPhone 6 Plus. According to Apple, it is much more durable. We are, alas, not talking about the resistance of glass minor scratches. During the most ordinary interaction with a smartphone, they appear as before.

The viewing angles of the screen are excellent, the contrast is high - 1200:1. Colors look rich and natural, with a color gamut of sRGB. Despite the fact that Apple's competitors in the smartphone market have been introducing screens with much higher resolution for a relatively long time, the display of the iPhone 6s Plus does not fade against their background, rather the opposite. The impressive screen characteristics make it one of the best among current smartphone models with displays from 5.5 inches.

The main feature of the iPhone 6s Plus display is its support for 3D Touch pressure tracking technology. This is the first time such technology has appeared in smartphones, so we have dedicated it to it. separate section, presented below.

3D Touch

3D Touch is a new way for a user to interact with a smartphone. Increased pressure on various elements interface causes different actions than usual, offering a range of additional features. The pressing force that must be applied to trigger alternative actions can be adjusted in the smartphone settings. The 3D Touch menu provides a test icon for user convenience, where you can try out different pressure levels without having to go back to main screen, which is very convenient.

There are many interface elements that support 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s Plus, but there are only three main gestures. Users can press hard on app icons on the home screen and access an additional menu with a list of different actions. For example, when you press hard on the Camera app icon, buttons appear that allow you to quickly launch normal shooting, selfie, and video recording modes. The number of 3D Touch menu functions offered varies depending on the application. Yes, y standard application There is only one “telephone” auxiliary function, which allows you to create a new contact.

Third-party developers have the opportunity to equip their applications with 3D Touch support, thereby increasing their functionality. For example, by pressing hard on the Shazam application icon, iPhone 6s Plus users will have access to a quick launch button for music recognition. It’s very convenient, and the main thing is that because of the real benefits, you get used to 3D Touch pretty quickly.

Inside apps, 3D Touch works in a similar way, but with one important caveat. Interface elements in applications can be pressed with varying amounts of pressure, resulting in different actions. Again, let's give an example for clarity. A not very strong press (but stronger than a regular tap) on a link opens a preview window in which you can familiarize yourself with its contents; a subsequent slightly stronger press will open the link. Apple gave these gestures names - Peek and Pop, respectively.

And if everything is clear with the Peek gesture, it is responsible for the main action of 3D Touch, then why is Pop needed if it does everything the same as a regular press? The fact is that Apple took care of its users. If, for example, you opened a photo in preview mode and realized that this is exactly the photo you want to send by mail, to open the photo you do not have to leave the 3D Touch menu and reopen the file. It will be enough to press your finger a little harder on the screen and the photo will open. Peek and Pop gestures work the same way with other types of UI elements.

All 3D Touch features are very easy to get used to. The problem with choosing the pressing force may appear only in the first couple of days using iPhone 6s Plus, then the fingers themselves “remember” everything. But many will have to get used to 3D Touch itself for some time. It's all because of habits. If you've been using an iPhone for several years and have started the stopwatch by initially opening the Clock app and then going to the desired tab, suddenly jumping to the option through the 3D Touch menu can be problematic.

It's definitely worth getting used to. 3D Touch can really save time and make your iPhone experience more efficient. Increased efficiency in every case separate application something happens. Thus, the above-mentioned “Phone” application with a single function of creating a new contact will not save much time, but the option quick selection desired contact for correspondence in social networking applications is much more. At the same time, the capabilities of 3D Touch will only expand as developers adapt their applications to the new function.

Separately, it should be noted simple, but extremely convenient function 3D Touch, which allows you to clear all notifications with the press of a button. By pressing with a little effort on the cross in the Notification Center, iPhone 6s Plus users have the opportunity to get rid of all notifications at once, without forcing themselves to swipe each one.

We also emphasize that the operation of 3D Touch is in some way affected by protective films or glass. However, there is nothing critical about this. After sticking the film or glass, you need to go to the 3D Touch pressure settings and, if necessary, reduce the level of operation of the function. In the case of films, changing settings is most often not required at all.

Touch ID

iPhone 6s Plus features a second-generation Touch ID fingerprint scanner that lives up to its name. If to unlock previous iPhone models you had to put your finger on the “Home” button under which the scanner is located for a whole second, or even longer, then in the case of Touch ID in the iPhone 6s Plus, it takes only a fraction of a second!

Initial speed Touch works ID may even bring some inconvenience. Many iPhone users are accustomed to pressing the Home button to activate the screen in order to check incoming notifications. In the case of the iPhone 6s Plus, such a touch of the button can lead to unlocking the smartphone - Touch ID works so quickly. However, this is only a small side effect that can be completely resolved, for example, by using another finger to press the button.

There is no secret to the amazing speed of the second generation Touch ID. Apple has equipped the scanner not with one, as before, but with two processors that process data. Each of the chips is responsible for its own task, thanks to which they perform the common goal, namely reading a fingerprint, much faster.

Left iPhone 6 Plus, right iPhone 6s Plus

Speaking about Touch ID in the iPhone 6s Plus, one cannot help but admire the accuracy of its operation. Over the course of several days of active use of the smartphone, not a single incorrect scanner response occurred! For this component, Apple's new product definitely gets a solid A+.

Hardware

IN based on iPhone The 6s Plus is powered by a dual-core 64-bit Apple A9 processor with clock frequency 1.84 GHz. In addition, the smartphone is equipped with a six-cluster PowerVR GT7600 graphics chip and an M9 motion coprocessor, which is built directly into the SoC. Latest solution Apple implemented this feature in its smartphones for the first time, which made it possible to reduce the power consumption of the chip and also make it possible to operate the “Hey Siri” function without having to put the smartphone on charge. This means that iPhone 6s Plus owners can contact us at any time. voice assistant just by saying the passphrase.

Despite numerous rumors, Apple has not decided to equip its new 5.5-inch smartphone with 3 GB of RAM. The iPhone 6s Plus has 2 GB of RAM and 16/32/64/128 GB of internal memory, depending on the model.

How fast was the iPhone 6s Plus? We compared Apple's new product with the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 5 in various benchmarks, thereby assessing how the smartphone compares to the previous model and its main competitor on the market.

The iPhone 6s Plus won the Geekbench 3 benchmark. In single-core mode, the smartphone scored 2398 points, in multi-core mode - 4015. The iPhone 6 Plus has noticeably more modest indicators - 1613 and 2899 points, respectively. Galaxy Note 5 failed in single-core mode, receiving only 1493 points, but in multi-core mode, due to as many as eight cores versus two in the iPhone 6s Plus, it was ahead of Apple’s new product with 5108 points.

Testing of smartphone graphics chips went according to the expected scenario. In the GFXBenchmark Manhattan benchmark, the iPhone 6s Plus showed 38.4 fps in onscreen mode, while the iPhone 6 Plus only 25.8 fps, and the Galaxy Note 5 only 15 fps. Despite the victory of the iPhone 6s Plus, the difference compared to the iPhone 6 Plus is small. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6s, for example, achieved a much more impressive 56.1 fps in similar testing. This happened, of course, due to the larger display of the iPhone 6s Plus.

Such a serious difference in iPhone indicators 6s Plus and Galaxy Note 5 we initially explained by the fact that the Samsung flagship has higher resolution, which is why the smartphone sank in onscreen mode, which provides for displaying images on the screen. In order to figure out whether this is so, we conducted an offscreen test. The result was almost shocking. And in this Galaxy mode Note 5 lost to the iPhone 6s Plus almost twice, the figures are 40.6 fps and 25 fps, respectively.

Testing in the comprehensive Basemark OS II benchmark confirmed iPhone advantage 6s Plus over your opponents. Apple's newest smartphone scored 2,032 points, while the Galaxy Note 5 only scored 1,765 points and the iPhone 6 Plus scored 1,382 points.

Finally, we compared the speed of smartphones on the Internet using the JetStream benchmark. There was a surprise here too, however, it was largely due to the lag of the Note 5. The Samsung flagship scored only 50.6 points in JetStream, while the iPhone 6 had 67.4 points, and the iPhone 6s Plus had 120.1 points. .

What's the end result? The iPhone 6s Plus proved to be a true flagship, easily defeating not only its predecessor, but also its main competitor on the market. On this moment Apple's new product is, without a doubt, the fastest smartphone.

Battery and operating time

iPhone 6s Plus is equipped with a 2750 mAh lithium-ion battery. Compared to the iPhone 6 Plus, whose battery capacity is 2915 mAh, there was a decrease, which fortunately did not affect the autonomy of the smartphone. Officially by Apple It is stated that the iPhone 6s Plus can work up to 24 hours in talk mode, up to 80 hours when listening to music and up to 384 hours in standby mode. The performance is exactly the same as the previous 5.5-inch model.

In practice, the iPhone 6s Plus does not disappoint, but surprises. When really active use, which involves listening to music, communicating on social networks, making calls, chatting in instant messengers, watching news and other everyday tasks, by night the smartphone was discharged to 20%. An incredible indicator that owners of smartphones with not the highest autonomy may not take at their word. However, it is true, the iPhone 6s Plus is the king of autonomy.

More specifically, when tested with a special script that simulates vigorous user activity, the iPhone 6s Plus worked for 9 hours and 11 minutes. The Galaxy Note 5 has a similar figure - 9 hours 2 minutes. Quite strangely, the iPhone 6 Plus lasted much less than its opponents - only 6 hours 32 minutes.

Cameras

The iPhone 6s Plus, like the iPhone 6s, has a 12-megapixel main camera with an f/2.2 aperture. Compared to previous iPhone models This is a major improvement since they have had 8-megapixel cameras since the iPhone 4s. Among the notable camera characteristics of the new iPhones, autofocus should be highlighted. Focus technologies Pixels, dual flash, five-lens optics and the ability to shoot video with 4K resolution at 30 fps.

The iPhone 6s Plus camera, unlike its counterpart in the smaller model, has one more, extremely important feature. It has an optical image stabilization system that helps you take better, clearer pictures even on the go.

In our article, we noted that the smartphone camera often produces blurry pictures. Because of this, you have to play it safe and shoot the required object several times. This trick allows you to accurately get a clear shot, even if it takes three frames. The iPhone 6s Plus does not have this problem, precisely because of the optical stabilization system. Of course, you should understand that this system does not perform miracles and unsuccessful pictures can be taken on the iPhone 6s Plus if desired. But with small fluctuations, for example, hands when shooting, the optical stabilizer copes with a bang.

If we talk about the iPhone 6s Plus camera in general, it is excellent. This is not the ultimate dream, but the resulting photographs, as they say, are not ashamed to show. In the light, photographs are obtained completely without noise, only if they are barely noticeable in difficult places. In poor lighting, the quality decreases noticeably, but compared to cameras on other smartphones, the result is decent.

iPhone cameras have always pleased us with their shooting speed. The iPhone 6s Plus did not disappoint in this regard. The smartphone takes a regular photo in 1.6 seconds, HDR in 1.9 seconds. For the iPhone 6 Plus, these figures are 1.9 and 2.1 seconds, respectively, and for the Galaxy Note 5, 2.1 and 2.7 seconds, respectively. In other words, Apple continues to improve one of the most... strengths their cameras.

Examples of photos taken with an iPhone 6s camera

And if you can find fault with shooting photos, then you don’t want to find fault with the quality of shooting videos. iPhone 6s Plus shoots video without defects. They cannot be detected even with a close study of the footage. However, given that a smartphone is a consumer device, no one will be looking for barely noticeable defects.

A nice addition to the iPhone 6s Plus camera is the so-called Live Photos shooting mode. Apple dubbed them “live” because when you press hard on them (hello, 3D Touch), they come to life for three seconds, showing not a single frame, but a short video. These “live” photos look interesting and attractive, but their main disadvantage will scare off many. Playback of Live Photos is only possible on an iPhone with 3D Touch, or on Mac computers. This means that a friend’s iPhone 5s or your own computer is running Windows control You won’t lose previously taken “live” photos. It is likely that in the future Apple will allow such images to be viewed everywhere, but for now there is no such option.

The front camera of the iPhone 6s Plus is noticeably improved compared to the camera of the previous model. It has become 5-megapixel, having the opportunity to take truly high-quality selfies and communicate comfortably via video calls. Photos taken with the front camera of the iPhone 6s Plus come out good, without obvious noise, although, as is easy to understand, these pictures cannot be called ideal.

The front camera of the smartphone has one notable feature - Retina Flash. When shooting with the front camera, the device's display momentarily turns white, causing the user's face to be illuminated. Thanks to this flash, you can take successful selfies even in not the best lighting. Note that Retina Flash works in a special way, monitoring not only the moment of shooting, but also the external environment. So, if the picture is taken in room light, the flash will not be bright white, but beige. Due to this, the smartphone screen will not hit your eyes again.

The iPhone 6s Plus didn't get an updated design, but it managed to impress. It's a fast and durable smartphone with a large display highest quality, impressive time battery life, a gorgeous camera with optical stabilization and the ability to shoot in 4K and several original features, such as 3D Touch. It is also important that the hardware of the iPhone 6s Plus is more than fine. By buying a smartphone now, or even in a year, you will provide yourself with several years of complete carefreeness. You won’t have to be annoyed once again due to iOS slowdowns, games crashing, and large applications and other other performance related reasons. iPhone 6s Plus is very powerful smartphone, which will not soon be ousted from the list of leaders in benchmarks and “live” performance testing.

List of useful topics:

With the release of new iPhone models – 6 and 6 Plus – Apple finally offered users the long-awaited “grown-up” displays. Most competing gadgets have long acquired phablet versions with large screens. The long and persistent disregard by Apple marketers of the market for phones with a diagonal of 5.5 inches was largely due to the protest of the company’s ideological inspirer, Steve Jobs. He was convinced that huge smartphones They are inconvenient in every sense, they look ridiculous - when held to the ear, no one will buy them.

In practice, it turned out that everything is quite the opposite. In the first half of sales alone, the 6 Plus helped the company capture 40% of the phablet market. In fact, he quickly gained popularity, especially in his native America, as well as in Asian countries. Comparing the sales levels of past models with new products showed an incredible increase in sales.

But it is clear that not everyone likes such dimensions, so Apple, astutely, released a more familiar alternative - a 4.7″ smartphone, with as close as possible to the unchanged branded four inches. In his segment, he also won many admirers.

Parameters of the “sixes”

What sizes are Apple's current flagships? The length of the iPhone 6 case, with a diagonal of 4.7 inches, is -13.81 cm, width - 6.7 cm. Version 6 Plus, with a diagonal of 5.5 ", is noticeably larger, its length is 15.81 cm, and its width – 7.78 cm.

Particularly notable is the reduced thickness of the iPhone 6 – 6.9 mm and 7.1 mm, respectively. However, many critics said that it would be better if the “six” was made thicker, but it would be equipped with a more powerful battery, at least equivalent to the battery in the 6 Plus.

Due to the exceptional slipperiness of the glass-steel surfaces of the models, as well as the large size of the case, it would not hurt to buy protective case. This way you can protect them from damage, improve the grip, and add a little personal touch to the standard design of the communicator.

How to decide?

Thinking about buying a tablet? We recommend holding an iPhone 6 plus in your hands first. Maybe you will no longer need to purchase additional device. Why, if a telephone is sufficient for the vast majority of operations? The diagonal of its display is not much inferior to classic tablets, but in terms of stability and functionality, it does not lose at all.

It’s just that the “six” is suitable for a lover of gadgets of traditional sizes, they are convenient to operate with one hand, and can be carried in jeans pockets.

Although many girls with miniature hands noted that they quickly got used to the dimensions of the 6 Plus. This iPhone will be a godsend for journalists or bloggers. It’s more convenient to shoot with it, the photos always come out clear due to optical stabilization, and it’s more pleasant to watch video files. It’s a proven fact that even those users who don’t like large devices noted that after holding the 6 Plus in their hands, they no longer want to go back to the compact version. This is a completely different quality of perception of the material.

It’s convenient to surf the menu and read notes on the Internet from both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus screens. Although, of course, from the latest video, games and just photographs look much more spectacular and realistic. Still, in this sense, a comparison of the parameters clearly shows the differences between the two models, and the “6 plus” dimensions are undoubtedly more advantageous.

On the other hand, when worn every day, the “plus” version is too bulky and does not fit in a regular pocket. It is almost impossible to use it with one hand; of course, the function of bringing the top of the screen closer to the fingers is Reachability, and simplifies operation, but it is not a panacea. So there have been cases where, after wearing the 6 Plus for some time, the user eventually chose the more compact iPhone 6. in this case– how many people, so many opinions.

Competitors of the Sixes

What alternative do the super popular ones have? Apple flagships? If you choose based on the size of the case, then a worthy competitor to the iPhone 6, which was released a little earlier, is the GALAXY Alpha from Samsung, with the same diagonal - 4.7 inches.

It has a solid body with metal inserts, the dimensions of which are 13.2 × 6.5 × 0.67 cm. In terms of “stuffing,” iPhones are traditionally inferior to Koreans. So, Alpha has a more powerful processor - 8 Exynos 5 cores, versus 2 cores of the A8 iPhone. RAM in Alpha is 2 GB, in iPhone 6 - one gigabyte. The built-in memory in the first is 32 GB, in the second – 16, 64 or 128 gigabytes to choose from. Both models do not have slots for external memory cards. The “Korean” has a 12 megapixel camera, the “American” has only 8. The battery capacities are comparable: 1860 mAh and 1810 mAh, respectively.

The Xperia Z3 Compact from Sony is also worthy of attention, with a diagonal of 4.6 inches and dimensions of 12.7 × 6.49 × 0.86 cm. The Z3 Compact is endowed with a durable body made of metal and glass, however, it is much thicker than the “six” . This can be seen even from the photo, and it looks much more massive.

But the Z3 is waterproof, so you can forgive it for being a bit hefty. In addition, it is equipped with a fast 4-core processor and has a decent camera with a resolution of 20.6 megapixels.

However, despite the quantitative superiority of hardware parameters, Alpha and Z3 are still inferior to the iPhone in operating stability. Whatever you say, this is Apple's strong point, and with much more modest characteristics, in comparative tests iPhones occupy top positions.

Among the main competitors iPhone 6Plus we can highlight the 5.5-inch G3 from LG, it has a modern stylish design, high-quality contrast screen, works quickly and for a long time. Its parameters: 14.65 × 72 × 7.3 cm

The 13 MP camera allows you to take high-quality photos, and the 3000 mAh battery can withstand any load.

The 5.2-inch version from Sony is also good - Xperia Z3, dust- and water-resistant. Her measurements: 14.65 × 7.2 × 0.73 cm. She has great camera 20 megapixel, 4 core processor, coupled with 3 gigabytes of RAM.

But again, the undoubted technical superiority of competing gadgets cannot be compared with the convenience of the interface of the new iPhones. None of the competitors provides a decent level of security and protection for all user data (Touch ID alone is worth it). And the vaunted Apple application store, with an incredible amount of content for every taste? No one else has anything like this yet. Customer satisfaction and skillful marketing are the main credo of the Cupertino team.

To summarize, we note that the iPhone 6 is suitable for the vast majority of users, due to its familiar and convenient size for everyday use. The “plus” model is simply necessary for advanced, active users and gamers. It will be able to please them with excellent graphics, performance and battery life. And all this on a large and bright display - beauty! So there is no need to carry a tablet with you.

We continue to study Apple smartphones. After testing the iPhone 6, it's time to move on to perhaps the most intriguing new product: the iPhone 6 Plus. If Apple had released just the iPhone 6, it would still have become a sensation thanks to its larger screen. But Apple decided to use all the artillery and hit the flank of Android tablets, previously ignored by the company from Cupertino.

In general, an interesting situation turned out: before, Apple acted as a trendsetter, and competitors were already following the well-trodden path. Let's remember the issue itself first iPhone, the emergence of iOS and the application store, then the transition to a Retina display in the iPhone 4 (for competitors then this was something unthinkable, but immediately after that everyone joined the race for screen resolution)... With the iPhone 6 Plus the picture is the opposite: The world has been actively using tablet phones for two years now, and the founder of the trend turned out to be Samsung company. All this time Apple fans They mockingly called tablet phones “shovels” and repeated Jobs’s words that the iPhone screen is ideal for use with one hand, unlike the Galaxy Note and similar devices. And then Apple suddenly releases a tablet phone!

However, it is no less interesting to compare the characteristics of the iPhone 6 Plus with Android tablets. There are many options to choose from here, but our choice fell on the newest devices: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (obviously this will be main competitor iPhone 6 Plus) and Huawei Ascend Mate 7.

And again, as in the case of the iPhone 6, we see that the characteristics of the flagship Android devices are superior to the Apple product. True, the iPhone 6 Plus is a little thinner and lighter than both competitors, and it has a larger maximum amount of internal memory (up to 128 GB!). But, let’s say, in the case of Android, the most profitable volume is precisely 32 GB, like the Note 4, since this is more than enough for programs, and for everything else you can buy a 128 GB microSD card, which will cost thousands. 4 rubles.

But a personal acquaintance with the iPhone 6 Plus will put everything in its place.

Equipment

Like the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus is sold in a white box, the top surface of which is completely white, that is, without a picture, but the contours of the smartphone protrude slightly (they seem to be squeezed out from the inside).

The equipment is traditional. Note that the charger here produces a current of 1 A (5 V), like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s, and not 2.1 A, like iPad mini Retina. This means that the iPhone 6 Plus will take significantly longer to charge than other Apple smartphones.

Design

The first emotion when you take the iPhone 6 Plus in your hand: “How big it is!” Very unusual, especially after the tiny (as it now turns out) iPhone 5s. However, in comparison with the iPhone 6 too. The photo below clearly shows the size ratio of the two “sixes”.

It's difficult to fit an Apple tablet into a jeans pocket, and it will stick out in jeans with shallow pockets. In any case, carrying such a thing in your pockets is not very convenient, and in a holster either. So for men, the only option is the inside pocket of a jacket, but women with an iPhone 6 Plus will not have any problems: it will fit into any, even the most compact women’s handbag and almost any clutch, but at the same time it is thin and quite light (relative to other devices of similar sizes).

IN iPhone hand The 6 Plus lies quite comfortably, despite its size. The rounded edges, similar to what we saw on the iPhone 6, fit nicely into the palm. With a standard grip, the volume buttons can be reached index finger, but you can’t switch the locking lever without intercepting it.

The same goes for the “Power” and “Home” buttons. Either you hold the device so that you can reach the “Power” button, or so that you can reach the “Home” button. In general, when using a smartphone, you will regularly have to move it in your hand. This is a cost for size; the iPhone 6 does not have this problem. That is, from the point of view of using a smartphone exactly as a smartphone, and not as a tablet, the iPhone 6 is better.

The materials, color and location of the connectors on the iPhone 6 Plus are identical to the iPhone 6. So we won’t dwell on this, but we note that the presence of only one speaker (for playing music and sounds) is especially disappointing here. Still, it’s one thing to have a medium-sized smartphone, and another thing to have a tablet phone, which is supposed to be used, among other things, for watching movies.

Let us note one more detail that we did not focus on in our review of the iPhone 6. The camera eye is protected by sapphire glass, which should reduce the likelihood of damage to the lens. Before the announcement of the new iPhones, there were rumors about the possibility of using sapphire glass to protect the screens. But in the end the screens are protected here Gorilla Glass, as before, but the camera still received sapphire glass.

This is very important because, as in the case of the iPhone 6, the camera eye here protrudes from the body.

Overall, the design of the iPhone 6 Plus gives me mixed impressions. On the one hand, the tablet phone is thin and quite light for an all-metal device. He looks good, but you can't say he's amazing. Like the iPhone 6, the glass on the screen is rounded at the edges, which makes a very pleasant impression. True, the frames around the screen on the 6 Plus are still a little wider. And, of course, one-handed use, which Apple was so proud of when talking about previous models, is now impossible. But judging by the sales of tablet phones from other manufacturers, this is not such a big drawback for users.

As for the scandal over the bending body of the iPhone 6 Plus, here we would say the following. Firstly, with some strength and no brains, almost any object the size of an iPhone 6 Plus can be slightly bent. And if someone put an iPhone 6 Plus in the back pocket of their jeans and sat on it all day, then it is not surprising that the case would bend, because aluminum is a fairly flexible metal. What’s more surprising is that the smartphone continued to work after that. With any other device, the theoretical possibility of bending it wouldn't even be news, and the person who complained about it would be told "he's a fool." But the hype surrounding the release of new iPhones is fertile ground for made-up scandals. So if you don't want your new iPhone 6 Plus to bend, just don't sit on it or bend it on purpose. And don't put light bulbs in your mouth :)

But every cloud has a silver lining: trying to quell the flaring scandal and show that the accusations are groundless, Apple allowed the Western press into the holy of holies - the laboratory where new iPhones are also tested for mechanical deformations. Following the excursion, Verge published very interesting photographs where you can see the whole process.

Screen

Alexey Kudryavtsev

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off (Nexus 7 on the left, iPhone 6 Plus in the center, iPhone 6 on the right, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the iPhone 6 Plus is noticeably darker (brightness according to photographs is 98 versus 108 for the Nexus 7). Note that the reflection of bright objects in the iPhone 6 Plus screen has a pronounced brownish halo that is more elongated across the screen. This will somewhat disappoint the fair sex, since using the phone screen as a mirror when correcting makeup will no longer be so handy. The ghosting of reflected objects in the iPhone 6 Plus screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically: between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to smaller number boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. The outer surface of the screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, no worse than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than with regular glass.

When manually controlling brightness and when displaying a white field in full screen maximum value brightness in the center of the screen was 540 cd/m² (recall that for the iPhone 6 we got 590 cd/m²), the minimum was 4.6 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at an excellent level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In stock automatic adjustment brightness by the light sensor (located above the front speaker slot). In automatic mode, as external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. If you simply turn on this mode, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 4.6 cd/m² (it’s a little dark, even just reading the text is annoying), in illuminated conditions artificial light office (approximately 400 lux) sets to 90-135 cd/m² (suitable), in a very bright environment (corresponding to bright daylight outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to 500 cd/m² (not maximum, but enough). In the case of average illumination, the established screen brightness is lower or higher depending on whether the external illumination previously increased or decreased (that is, there is pronounced hysteresis). As a result, the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately. Also, after turning on the auto-brightness function, you can move the brightness slider, which will make some adjustments, but, as practice has shown, it is better not to interfere. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering.

This smartphone uses an IPS matrix. The microphotographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

Traditionally, for iPhones, many dust particles are found in the layer of filler adhesive between the outer glass and the matrix:

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the iPhone 6 Plus and Nexus 7, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m² (over a white field in the entire screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K There is a white field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are rich on all three screens. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, and the contrast remained at a high level. And a white field:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (by at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the iPhone 6 Plus the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened slightly and acquires a purple tint. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

Note that the black brightness of the Nexus 7 is still lower in these two photos. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) for a screen on an IPS matrix is very high - about 1160:1 (although lower than the declared “standard” of 1300:1). The response time for the black-white-black transition is 20 ms (10 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 31 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.18, which is almost equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve minimally deviates from the power-law dependence:

Of course, there is no dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image.

The color gamut from a practical point of view is equal to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components with each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is very good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, ΔE and color temperature change little from hue to hue, which has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since there is no color balance of great importance, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It is also possible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, excellent uniformity of the black field, high stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from perpendicular to the screen plane, an ideal gamma curve, high contrast, sRGB color gamut and good color balance . Overall the screen quality is very, very high.

OS and software

Camera

Anton Soloviev

iPhone 6 Plus is equipped with two cameras, similar in resolution to the cameras of the iPhone 6, 5 and 5s. The only difference between the rear camera of the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6 is optical stabilization. We tested the rear camera of the iPhone 6 Plus in detail and found out how effective optical stabilization is.

The foliage is rendered well, and some residual noise can be seen in the shadows.

Sharping on the wires and quite a bit of noise in the shadows - everything is like the iPhone 6.

In the upper part of the frame and in the background, the foliage is done so-so, but the sharpness is generally good.

The foliage merges slightly towards the left edge.

It seems that the camera handles shadows a little better than the 6th model, although the difference is well within the error limits.

In this case, the camera copes well with noise, but worse with the sky.

However, no significant differences from 6 are visible.

Good sharpness across almost the entire field of the frame.

And again, a photo in which the rough work of the noise reduction is clearly visible.

The camera copes well with macro photography.

The main question that many people are probably asking is how the 6 Plus camera differs from the 6. We will try to answer that.

The main and only difference, according to the manufacturer, is optical stabilization. In fact, from the outside, the camera module of the 6 Plus seems larger than that of the 6, but it’s hard to believe that a mechanical stabilizer could be “shoved” into such dimensions, although anything is possible. The work of the stabilizer has its side effects, which, however, are quite obvious. It seems that the 6's camera, unlike the 6 Plus's, is much more stable than usual and the camera on the iPhones stood out. When shooting on a tripod, the 6 Plus camera often blurs when focusing. But when shooting with shaking hands, the camera 6 Plus hits more often and makes fewer mistakes with focus. All this can be attributed to the work of the stabilizer, although it is difficult to say for sure whether it is there, since no significant difference is visible in the pictures. But the fact is that when shooting from a tripod, the 6 Plus is more likely to make mistakes with focus, and when shooting handheld, the 6 is more likely to make mistakes. As for getting a sharper image when shaking, here, too, we cannot definitely say that the 6 Plus does a better job.

No matter how they convince us of the novelty of the camera, it’s hard to believe. To the eye, the camera modules are the same not only in the 6 Plus and 6, but also in the iPhone 5s, 5c and 5. We don’t have the last two in front of our eyes, but we can easily estimate the rest from the graph.

It's funny that the only noticeable change in EXIF shots is the focal length, which is now 29mm equivalent. But the iPhone 5s had 30 mm? That's the thing, it was, but with the OS update it also became 29 mm. This once again allows us to state that it is not the camera that has changed, but the firmware, which also does not demonstrate radical improvements.

Lighting ≈3200 lux. The camera does a good job.

Lighting ≈1400 lux. The situation is not changing.

Lighting ≈130 lux. Noise appears, and with it noise reduction, and details begin to blur. But the grain from the noise reduction is still not visible.

Lighting ≈130 lux, flash. The flash improves the situation a little.

Lighting<1 люкс, вспышка. В темноте вспышка справляется хорошо.

Cameras 6 and 6 Plus are almost on par, although in poor lighting the 6 Plus allows itself to set a longer shutter speed (possibly due to the presence of a stabilizer) and a lower light sensitivity, which, however, does not help it at all.

We will not analyze in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the camera, since we have already done this in the previous article.

Well, we still have the same excellent camera in front of us, which can no longer be called outstanding. On the other hand, she is really good, and many people don’t need anything better. It handles many tasks well, and is a great option as a smartphone camera. Improvements, if any, are barely noticeable, and you need to look at the pictures for a very long time to understand what they are. Other manufacturers have long been fighting to oust compact cameras from the market, and Apple has been quietly standing on the sidelines in this matter for three years now. Does a smartphone need more? Everyone decides for themselves.

It is worth noting one oddity of the camera that some may find interesting. The fact is that the camera apparently takes information about the orientation of the smartphone in space not from the accelerometer (which, in particular, rotates the screen interface), but from some other sensor, which only reports that the camera is in the wrong orientation. And, as it turns out, the camera has only one correct orientation—horizontal positioning of the smartphone with the right button. As a result, the camera sometimes records strange data in EXIF about the “correct” orientation of the image, and viewing programs that take this into account flip the image 90 or 180 degrees. Our readers encountered this when they tried to look at the pictures in the previous article. So if you're left-handed and like to have the shutter button under your left hand, take this into account, especially when shooting video.

By the way, about the video. Below are some videos. We will not comment on them, since the differences from 6 are not visible.

Video Sound
Video 1 1920×1080, 30 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 17.6 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
Video 2 1280×720, 120 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 31.1 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
Video 3 1280×720, 240 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 40.5 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
Video 4 1280×720, 120 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 30.5 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
Video 5 1920×1080, 60 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 26.4 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
Video 6 1920×1080, 30 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 17.3 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo

The easiest way to evaluate stabilization is by shooting video, especially with a 3x zoom. By the way, the camera's zoom works so-so, which is quite expected - of course, it is digital. And the video quality itself in cloudy weather leaves much to be desired. But let's return to stabilization. In order to evaluate the performance of the stabilizer, we shot a video on both smartphones, placing one tightly against the other, so both were in equal conditions. And what did we see?

Video Sound
1920×1080, 60 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 25.2 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo
1920×1080, 60 fps, AVC MPEG-4 [email protected], 25.5 Mbit/s AAC LC, 64 Kbps, stereo

After watching these videos a couple of times, you completely cease to understand which smartphone was used to film which one, because they are absolutely the same. Even if there is an “optical” stabilizer in the camera 6 Plus, its operation is not visible.

Anticipating the “holivar” in the comments, we note that some other resources will certainly note the obvious improvement in the camera and will certainly provide blurry pictures from the 6 and clear ones from the 6 Plus, as well as pictures with good and bad noise reduction. But, unfortunately, we only write about what we see, and our imagination works very poorly when testing.

And for those who like to argue and throw around links, here is the following entertaining picture. You can look at it for hours, looking for differences. We will not describe it, since an attentive reader will immediately understand which model is which. Then he will decide that the average model does a better job because it doesn’t “blush”, but after thinking a little more, he will understand that all the differences in the photo are solely due to the design features of the devices, and not the cameras themselves.

And one more more interesting one. It also doesn’t need any comments, and you can guess for a long time. However, all the cameras in the picture perform about the same.

conclusions

Well, the conclusion will be simple: Apple made its first tablet phone, and this is a product that generally corresponds to the principles and ideals of Apple. Actually, for most potential buyers this information will be quite enough. Well, for those who want to understand the issue more deeply and understand how the iPhone 6 Plus compares with competing products, we have prepared a lot of interesting information that everyone will perceive in accordance with their attitude towards Apple products.

On the one hand, the screen resolution and pixel density here are not record-breaking - the flagships of Samsung and LG have higher parameters. On the other hand, in terms of all its characteristics, the iPhone 6 Plus has the best screen we've tested. The design of the new product is nice, but it has all the same pros and cons as other tablet phones. The dimensions of such devices are still not for everyone. The camera is good, but we also cannot say that it is better than its competitors. The battery life was good, but after the iPhone 6 we expected even more. We can go on and on. For every plus there will be a “but”, but for every “but” there will be a counter-argument. Fertile ground for forum discussions, which, however, like the scandals surrounding the bendable body, will only fuel interest in the new product.

We congratulate Apple on entering the new territory of tablet phones and look forward to the opportunity to study both the device itself and the software for it in more detail, after which we will definitely tell you about our impressions and experience of use.

The long-awaited Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have become revolutionary models in the line of Apple phones. For iPhone 6, the display diagonal dimensions have finally changed upward, something that has not happened since 2012. Despite the fact that the creators of the smartphone experimented with a plastic case in previous versions, which fortunately was later abandoned, the innovations for the “sixes” turned out to be more than successful.

For iPhone 6, the classic diagonal parameters have been increased from 4 to 4.7 inches. So what size is the iPhone 6 plus? Now its screen reaches 5.5 inches, which makes it a full-fledged phablet version.

Phablet- an incredibly fashionable class of mobile phones that combines gadgets with screen sizes from 5 to 7 inches. Sales statistics indicate a huge increase in the popularity of devices of this format, so the creators of the iPhone 6 plus adjusted the dimensions of the new device to the needs of users, which was undoubtedly a great success. The word “phablet” comes from the merger of the English words phone and tablet, which means that the device implies not only a large screen, but also a powerful high-capacity battery.

Innovations in the iPhone 6 series

Why did Apple wait so long to release phones larger than the usual 4 inches? The whole point was that the head of the corporation, the famous businessman Steve Jobs, was deeply convinced that this marketing move would be a failure, and no one would buy huge gadgets, since they were extremely unergonomic and inconvenient for everyday use. And he was wrong because iPhone 6 screen size helped capture almost 40% of the large phone market. Gadgets are especially popular in their homeland in the USA and Asian countries.

Comparison of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

It is worth noting that the “sixes” differ from their predecessors not only in size, but also in design. Manufacturers abandoned the straight edges of the case and replaced them with rounded ones, which caused a lot of controversy among buyers.

The color scheme of the case for the models is made in familiar colors, such as classic silver, everyone’s favorite gold and space gray.

But how do phones differ from each other? There are several important differences.

Size. Of course, the first and main difference between the two models is the difference in weight and size of the displays. The iPhone 6 has a screen size that's 0.8 inches smaller than the Plus version, which boasts the same inch screen size as Samsung and Sony's flagships. The size of the iPhone 6 and 6s in centimeters is 13.8 cm in length and 6.7 cm in width. The parameters of version 6 Plus are significantly larger: 15.8 and 7.8 cm, respectively.

Display. The resolution of the “plus” model is pleasantly pleasing with numbers - 1920x1080 pixels. For its smaller brother, the resolution is 1334x750 pixels. Interestingly, the number of pixels per inch in lines 6 and 5 is the same and equal to 326 ppi.

CPU. Both gadgets have the same A8 processor and 64-bit architecture. Two 1.4 GHz cores provide the speed and power of phones, convenient use of even the most complex applications, and comfort in working with multimedia and documents. By the way, the RAM remained 1 GB, the same as in previous models, but in version 6s it was increased to 2 GB, which significantly improved the functionality of the device.
