This is twice as much as the X-Ice North 3 tire and, on average, 30% more than the leading competitor. The directional tread pattern has a high proportion of positive profile, a developed network of grooves and a new sipe design. A new generation of elastomers have been added to the tread compound. They push back the glass transition of the tread rubber down to -65 degrees, maintaining performance at ultra-low temperatures.



The sixth generation of the "Alpine" range of winter tires is designed for mild winter climatic conditions in the central regions of the European continent. The Alpin 6 model has a high level of safety, both with a new tread and with a worn one. This was made possible thanks to the tread pattern that changes with wear, modeled on EverGrip technology. To ensure performance, the new product uses a multi-layer rubber compound. The outer tread layer provides initial high level grip characteristics in winter conditions, while the inner improves traction on snowy surfaces as the tire wears.



The new winter tire for crossovers combines the innovative developments of French specialists aimed at excellent traction at high speeds. New design tread is made using the latest technological and engineering solutions Total Performance, aimed at achieving high performance on winter roads. The latest generation of rubber compound with sunflower oil has improved performance at low temperatures. Precise steering at high speeds is achieved by the tread using StabiliGrip self-locking sipes. Numerous deep grooves and curved blocks provide performance on snowy roads.



Tires Michelin Agilis CrossClimate are addressed to drivers of the southern regions, operating cars at temperatures down to -5 degrees Celsius. The novelty is designed using a V-shaped tread and self-locking 3D sipes. The sharp edges of the tread blocks combined with 3D sipes provide reliable grip on snowy roads. At the same time, in summer operating conditions on dry and wet surfaces, the new tire demonstrates characteristics identical to summer tires. Thanks to a new tread compound with functional elastomers, the tire has a 35% longer life than the average of leading competitors.



Continental


The German tire manufacturer Continental has introduced a Nordic studless VikingContact 7 and a European studless WinterContact TS860S. The tire has replaced the high-performance Nordic tire ContiVikingContact 6. The tread compound has been adapted to the conditions of Russia and Scandinavia. Its versatility comes from a soft rubber compound with active silica and rapeseed oil. These components have improved the performance of the tire on wet roads and retained the elasticity necessary for reliable grip at low temperatures. The tread has a directional design with an optimized block ratio in the contact patch and an efficient network of grooves, which improves the drainage of water and slush. The tread blocks are interconnected by small bridges, which ensure tire stability in corners. The increased number of interlocking sipes 3D Trapez Sipes allowed to achieve impressive traction and braking performance on icy and snowy roads.



Addressed to owners of powerful and sports cars. Engineers integrated a special brake groove into the central part of the tread, thanks to which it was possible to significantly reduce the braking distance. Improved traction performance is provided by stiff, wide tread shoulder blocks that provide excellent grip and, as a result, control precision. An increased number of multidirectional grooves and a developed network of traction sipes ensured effective grip on snow.

American tire manufacturer Goodyear has introduced a new studded tire. The novelty combines a number of advantages and technologies present in the most successful Goodyear models. So, the directional tread pattern with constructive modifications was borrowed from the Dunlop Ice Touch tire. He managed to establish himself as an effective tool that guarantees reliable grip on winter roads. It is molded with a highly resilient rubber compound to ensure performance over a wide range of winter temperatures. Engineers have provided it with deep multifunctional grooves and sipes with multiple engagement edges. For effective traction on snow, traps integrated into the blocks of the shoulder zones are responsible for capturing and holding snow. Dynamic grooves in the center of the tread improve traction on any type of winter road. The developed network of sipes creates a large number of engagement edges that improve acceleration and braking performance on slippery and wet roads.



The design of the studs, which was made according to the Active Stud Technology active stud concept, did not go unnoticed. It implies an enhanced action of the spike on the road surface due to the 6-sided shape.



The Finnish company Nokian Tires has relied on a non-studded novelty for passenger cars and its version for crossovers and SUVs with the SUV prefix. The unique innovations of the novelty include the Arctic Sense Grip concept, according to which the tread was equipped with sipes of various designs that adapt to any weather conditions. The tread is molded with a third generation Cryo Crystal sharp hard compound rubber compound. Multi-faceted Snow Claws located between the tread blocks and shoulder areas create balanced traction on ice and snow, especially during braking and acceleration. The novelty is positioned as the best offer for electric cars and hybrid cars in terms of efficiency.



The main feature of the model was the use of Aramid Sidewall technology. It has already proven itself on other Nokian Tires models designed for heavy vehicles with a high center of gravity. The technology consists of sidewalls reinforced with aramid fiber, which provide high strength characteristics and tire resistance to impacts and cuts. The sidewalls of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV are made from a rubber compound with an extremely durable aramid fiber, also used in bulletproof vests.


Bridgestone


Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone has introduced two new products for the current season. The premium non-studded model has become the key for the brand. The tire is known locally as the Blizzak VRX2 in Japan and has been successfully sold there since autumn 2017. The novelty has a multifunctional tread with an innovative pattern that improves traction. The increased number of sipes contributes to efficient traction and braking performance. Thanks to the self-locking effect, the engineers managed to maintain the rigidity of the blocks necessary for stable and precise controllability. The new formula of the tread rubber compound is made using the patented Multicell Compound II technology, which provides tighter contact with the road. Bridgestone technologists have integrated micropores and cavities into the rubber compound of the tread to absorb water from the road surface. Due to this, the tread contacts the hard surface of the ice, which guarantees a reliable grip.



The second novelty of the company was the model presented this year. Motorists with more than ten years of experience remember the legendary Ice Cruiser 7000. The modification with the letter S, as conceived by the Japanese, should repeat the success of its prototype. To keep up with current trends, the sidewall has been updated with a new company logo. Having found out the cause of the high noise level, Bridgestone engineers optimized the length of the spikes, which significantly improved acoustic comfort.



The Korean company Hankook has launched two winter novelties on the market: the non-studded Winter i*cept X RW10 and the studded Winter i*pike RS2 W429 tire for harsh winter conditions. The non-studded new product is designed for the fast-growing crossover segment that needs reliable traction in harsh winter conditions. The new tread has a V-shaped architecture with sharp edges that provide high traction and grip characteristics and good handling on wet road surfaces. The increased number of grooves and self-locking sipes guarantee a high level of safety on snow and ice, even with a dynamic driving style. The 3D Grip Claw provides traction on snow, while staggered grooves prevent snow from accumulating when accelerating or braking on ice. Zigzag grooves effectively protect against hydroplaning, ensuring rapid water removal from the contact patch. The system of special moisture-absorbing holes prevents slipping on melted snow. Zigzag lugs on the shoulder blocks ensure uniform pressure distribution along the edges of the shoulder area.



The studded tire has been specially designed for harsh winter conditions. Thanks to the new Snow Slit tread design with more studs and a new rubber compound, the tire delivers outstanding performance on all winter surfaces: snow and ice. The zigzag grooves provide improved traction in deep snow, while the fangs on both sides of the tread improve traction on packed snow. Spiral boosters in the shoulder grooves effectively evacuate water from the contact patch on icy road surfaces.


Kormoran


For the upcoming 2018-2019 winter season, Kormoran is focusing on the Stud 2 passenger car studded tire and the non-studded Snow model. The tires have an identical directional tread pattern that has proven to be an effective tool on difficult winter roads. Despite its external similarity, the tire tread has a number of significant differences from the Snow tread. As befits a studded tire, it is designed to deliver confident performance on ice in harsh winter conditions. The tread blocks in which the studs are integrated have been significantly strengthened by reducing the number of sipes. Among other things, the tire uses dual rubber compound technology, which is softer at the contact patch of the tire with the road and stiffer at the base of the carcass. This effectively protects the tire from premature stud loss, extending tire life.



The directional tire tread consists of blocks combined into five longitudinal ribs. This architecture provided confident traction and short braking distances on any type of winter surfaces. The diagonal direction of the blocks and the variable block pitch of the shoulder zones of the tread significantly improved comfort and reduced the noise level. A network of multidirectional grooves quickly removes water and slush from the contact patch, preventing the occurrence of aquaplaning. The blocks of the central tread area, integrated into a continuous central rib, guarantee a high level of directional stability and precise steering responses during high-speed maneuvering.




Korean tire manufacturer Nexen has high hopes for this year's WinGuard Sport 2 SUV and WinGuard Ice 2 models. The studless SUV winter tire is designed for modern sports cars. She has already managed to receive the prestigious design award iF Design Awards 2018. The tread with a directional V-shaped pattern became the merit of this. It offers improved grip on wet, snowy and icy surfaces with 17 percent more lip count and 3D sipes and an updated high silica tread compound. It has a high elasticity index, which allows the tire to be used effectively in harsh winter conditions.



Winter studless tires Nexen WinGuard Ice 2 are designed for a wide range of passenger cars moving in harsh winter conditions. The manufacturer focuses on high braking performance on ice and stable handling on snowy roads. Novika has a pronounced asymmetric tread pattern with densely spaced three-dimensional sipes that improve traction on winter roads. The new rubber compound with the inclusion of silica and secret components helps maintain elasticity at low temperatures and optimizes tire grip during the thaw.




The Japanese company Toyo will be presented this season with two new products: a studded tire and a friction model for Snowprox S954 SUV crossovers. The studded novelty is designed to replace the one that appeared on Russian market in 2013 the model of the previous generation Observe G3-ice. Thanks to the use of double blocks, the Japanese specialists managed to increase the positive profile of the tire, which made it possible to optimize the distribution of studs in 28 lines. This significantly increased the grip characteristics of the tire on ice. The tread blocks feature multiple multi-directional 3D wave-like sipes that provide confident maneuverability when turning the steering wheel in any direction. For efficient movement in deep snow, the tire was equipped with special Snow Blade lugs that act as lugs. The new Ice Force cleat features a wider flange for 20 percent better cleat retention in the hole and a pentagonal carbide tip for superior traction on ice.



The wide tread of the new Toyo Snowprox S954 SUV tire provides heavy SUV drivers with excellent handling. The combination of sipes of different thicknesses contributes to an even distribution of pressure in the contact patch, improving grip on wet road surfaces while maintaining high snow performance. Especially for the novelty, a new composition of the rubber compound was developed containing highly dispersed silica and active polymers. It reduces heat generation, reduces rolling resistance and increases traction on wet surfaces.

What winter tires to buy? This question is rather tricky considering huge selection in the tire market and the presence of many brands. But a huge number of offers, although it makes the final product better, does not guarantee a direct hit on the target when buying a new winter kit. And, of course, if when buying a proven old model, you can focus on your own experience, on the reviews of acquaintances and friends, and on various Internet resources. But if you want to buy a novelty of the season?

How to choose winter tires?

In the tire market, many models are presented throughout the whole year and, I must say, manufacturers skillfully hide the shortcomings of certain new products. But still, how to determine whether the model will be successful in the future? Let's try to rank the arguments in favor of the success of a particular model from higher to lower priority.

2. The quality of the model that the novelty should replace. If, for example, Gislaved Euro*Frost 5 tires were decent, then Euro*Frost 6 should not be worse. As a rule, the new model is not worse than the previous one.

3. Results of preliminary tests from independent experts. Many manufacturers publish the results of examinations before they start selling tires. It is worth thinking about the quality of those models that do not pass the examination. The most authoritative of the expert organizations are TUV SUD and Dekra.

When choosing a novelty, the client receives several advantages at once:

  • The novelty is always fresh, it is only a few months old.
  • The quality of the first batches is often slightly higher than subsequent ones, as the manufacturer understands that the first tires sold will set the tone for sales for many years.

  • The novelty will be on sale for many more years, so in the event of a puncture and other kinds of damage, the buyer can easily replace the model.

New winter season 2017-2018

Premium segment

Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 These are winter tires with studs. Bridgestone is not well known for its winter studded products, however, the company recently acquired a new landfill in Ivalo, Finland to improve its winter production. The results of preliminary tests are quite positive, which makes you think about buying a model, given that analogues are much more expensive (for example, Nokian Hakapelita 9).

Bridgestone Blizzak VRX 2- the successor to the legendary VRX, which has proven itself so well in our country. The model does not differ much from the previous one in its friction tread pattern (although there are changes here). The main changes affected the composition of the rubber. Wear resistance characteristics have been significantly increased.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 Evo- tires with a directional pattern, but without studding. Something between Velcro and a studded tire. Its previous variation was not entirely successful, so the changes affected everything - from the tread pattern to the compound. According to the designers, the changes should impress lovers of driving on loose snow.

Michelin Pilot Alpin 5- a promising winter model, the successor of the legendary four from which she inherited the directional pattern. However, the designers have added a central groove to the design for closer contact with the snowy road. Without a doubt, the model will be excellent, although, like all products of the French concern, it will be expensive.

Michelin X-Ice 3 XI3 Plus- full analogues of XI3, if you pay attention only to the protector. All innovations have affected the rubber cocktail. The tires are made for all-round riding. The model is good both on asphalt and on icy surfaces.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9- continuation of the legendary line from the Finnish manufacturer. The developer has made even more innovations in studding by making it from two types of studs. However, the number of spikes was reduced in comparison with the eight, since many people did not like the abundance of these elements in the eight. The model is worth more than attention.

Average price segment

Toyo Snowprox S954- Japanese tire manufacturers break into the winter tire market. S953 was a pretty successful model, though not the most popular. Nevertheless, a strong winter tire with a symmetrical tread pattern is what we need for our roads.

Yokohama Ice Guard IG65- Spike, successor to the popular IG55. The predecessor was a fairly successful model, although it does not dare to call it the best. This is especially true of the spikes, they often flew off the tread. The manufacturer decided to fix this and created this tire. Nevertheless, even with this shortcoming, the model deserves to be bought.

Yokohama Bluearth Winter V905 - friction tire with directional tread pattern. Moreover, rubber is presented as environmentally friendly, so special attention is paid to it. In any case, the WDrive V905 was pretty good considering the price. Definitely price/quality.

Gislaved Euro*Frost 6 /General Altimax Winter 3/Viking WinTech- three identical models from brands owned by the German Continental. The German manufacturer itself did not introduce anything new for the winter of 2017-2018, limiting itself to the products of its sub-brands. The model has a directional pattern with a large number of lamellae. Definitely high-quality products, given the real German quality and previous work of factories.

BFGoodrich Winter T/A KSI- Another model from Michelin, released under its own sub-brand. BF Goodrich is the company's most famous brands, so the tire stands out for its quality. A typical friction tire for winter use on all surfaces.

Nokian Nordman 7- budgetary seventh Hakkapelita. Rubber with a similar tread pattern and similar studs, but the rubber compound is an order of magnitude worse and cheaper. However, the versatility of the proven tread design instills confidence that the model will be successful.

Nexen-Roadstone Winguard Sport 2- winter tire with directional pattern. The model is categorically different from the previous one. In fact, it has nothing in common. The Korean manufacturer launched a large promotional campaign to promote products. The model deserves more than attention.

Budget brands

SUV Winter/SUV Snow- a model from Michelin designers released under all budget brands of the company. The model is made with a claim to the title of Velcro, however, given the cost, it can hardly be called such. However, the directional pattern and the abundance of alternatives make the wheels worth considering.

Orium/Tigar/Strial/Taurus/Kormoran/Riken SUV Ice/SUV Stud- tires similar to the higher model, but with the ability to stud. The same benefits, but with increased traction on ice.

Premiorri ViaMaggiore Z Plus- a winter novelty for passenger cars from the Bila Tserkva plant Rosava. A typical state employee, no better than the usual ViaMaggiore, but it will justify its price.

Belshina Bravado- the Belarusian model is of quite good quality. The Belshina plant has a positive experience with the Artmotion Snow lineup, so it’s worth looking at Bravado.

This non-studded tire is specially designed for Scandinavian and Russian winters. When changing the model, the developers placed special emphasis on a high level of grip on any type of surface. This versatility is achieved through a three-piece asymmetric tread pattern made from an innovative softness-optimized rubber compound. The outer part of the tread provides grip on dry pavement, the middle one on ice, and the inner part on snow. The tread design combination contributes to good performance in the ever-changing city road conditions. The design of the sipes makes the tire resistant to hydroplaning on wet pavement, and the tread blocks connected by bridges work like snow chains on snow. For the first time, some sizes of this model are produced using ContiCilent technology. DUNLOP WINTER MAXX 02


Dunlop Tire CIS introduces to the market of Russia and CIS countries a new development of Sumitomo Rubber Industries - a non-studded Winter Maxx 02 model with an asymmetric tread pattern universal for any surfaces. Its design uses sharp block edges to help grip on the ice surface, and wide drainage grooves provide self-cleaning of the tread from snow and slush. Developed lateral drainage grooves effectively remove moisture from the contact patch.
