Today we want to introduce you to an interesting way to receive Bitcoin, using old and unnecessary BTC, LTC and DOGE addresses. We have tested this method personally and can confirm that it works great. But the main condition is the following: at the old address as of May 12, 2014 there had to be any positive balance, no matter how much, it was important that the balance be more than 0.

If you have such addresses, you are halfway to success. In this article we will give examples with old Bitcoin addresses, because... We turned out to have quite a lot of them, unlike LTC and DOGE, which we didn’t have at all.

How to check your balance or remaining balance

Use the capabilities of your Bitcoin wallet or Blockchain website. Here, for example, is one of our old Bitcoin addresses - . As you can see, as of May 12, 2014, this address had a positive balance. These are the addresses that are needed to squeeze potential profit out of them.

IMPORTANT! Address-address... but you must also have either wallet.dat file from your wallet, which contained your address or private key ( Private key) from this address. The amount of earnings/profit will depend on what exactly you have. If you don’t have wallet.dat or Private key, you don’t have to read any further material. There's "no chance" for you.

How to monetize an old Bitcoin address

The first thing you need to make sure is that the address you want to monetize does not have a positive balance for now. Those. It should not contain a large amount, or not a large amount, but which you would not particularly like to lose.

If you see a message like this in response, you can start to rejoice, but only if you have either the wallet.dat file or the Private key for this address.

On the next page, where the Clamchecker resource will redirect you, you will see 3 possible options on how to “repay” the old address and extract additional income from it.

First option: You need to visit the Github repository and download and install the Clam wallet on your PC. Next, wait for it to completely synchronize (2-4 days), import your wallet.dat file into it, and, after 5-10 minutes, receive your 4.60545574 CLAM. Next, go to any cryptocurrency exchange and change CLAM to Bitcoin. We work with the Poloniex exchange.

4.60545574 CLAM (currently) = 0.02061995 BTC or $4.97.

Second option: You don't need to download anything or wait for the Clam client to sync with the network. Just tell the Clamchecker service the private key for this address. Click on the icon with number 2, and on the next page in the submission form indicate the monetized BTC, LTC, DOGE address, the private key from this address and the address of the Clam wallet to which you will receive 3.5 CLAM. If you plan to exchange CLAMs for Bitcoin, register on the Poloniex exchange, generate a Clam deposit address there and specify this address as the address to receive rewards.

3.5 CLAM (currently) = 0.01567051 BTC or $3.77.

Third option: Again, you don't need to download anything or wait for the Clam client to sync with the network. Just tell the Clamchecker service the private key for this address. Click on the icon with number 3, and on the next page in the submission form indicate the BTC, LTC, DOGE address to be monetized, the private key from this address and the address of the Bitcoin wallet to which you will receive 0.005 BTC. That is, in this case you receive a reward immediately in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency.

In conclusion

In this simple way you can “squeeze” maximum profit from your old cryptocurrency addresses. The method works and it is absolutely safe. But remember that before transferring private keys from old addresses, make sure that the addresses are empty and that no future income is expected from them. When importing the wallet.dat file into the Clam client, make sure that the file contains only data for the monetized address.

From time to time, some of you may find old wallet.dat files that store the private keys of BTC, LTC, DOGE or one of the early cryptocurrencies on old screws or flash drives. And a problem may arise in recovering the private keys of wallets from these files. The easiest way that immediately comes to mind is to install the latest version of Bitcoin Core or the corresponding local wallet for another coin, copy wallet.dat to the folder with the wallet and wait for the network to synchronize. However, in the case of Bitcoin, the synchronization process can take quite a long time; in addition, this will require approximately 150 GB of free disk space. Therefore, we suggest that you use another, faster and more convenient way to obtain private keys from the wallet.dat file using the PyWallet Bitcoin wallet importer/exporter script.

PyWallet Bitcoin wallet importer/exporter is a script written in the Python programming language that was written quite a long time ago and is great as a tool for getting all your public and private keys from Wallet.dat files.

To run the PyWallet script, you will need the Python programming language interpreter installed on your system, and this will require an older version of the Python 2.7 interpreter. Since the script was developed quite a long time ago, it will not work on newer versions of Python 3.x.

A quick guide on how you can export your public and private keys from wallet.dat on Windows.

• To start download and install Python 2.7 for Windows. Running Python scripts on Windows does not require any additional dependencies other than the installed interpreter.
• When installing Python, specify a simple path on the C drive. For example, C:\Python27.
• Copy pywallet.py script and the wallet file wallet.dat in the same folder with Python installed.
• Run the following command using the Windows console: python pywallet.py --dumpwallet --datadir=.
• If you were using a mining wallet you may have multiple addresses within a single wallet.dat file, in which case you can use the following command which will save your keys to a text file wallet.txt instead of just printing them to the console: python pywallet.py --dumpwallet --datadir=. > wallet.txt
• Now just open the text file and inside you will see a list of exported public and private keys, which are located inside the wallet.dat file.
• If your wallet was encrypted, you will also need to enter the password you used to encrypt the wallet.dat file.
• If you forget the password you used to encrypt your wallet, you will not be able to recover or use your coins that are inside the encrypted wallet.

Another possible method for checking your wallet balance is to use the Blockchain Explorer online services.

There is also a newer version of the PyWallet script that offers some useful additional features, so you can try using that if you find the functionality of the older version lacking. Although, in our opinion, the original version is also great for recovering keys.

• "Heavy" — client applications, when installed, a huge amount of data is downloaded to the user’s computer. It contains all the information about the movement of blocks. The database takes up about 60 GB of disk space. Such applications include: Armory, Bitcoin Core.
• "Lungs" — do not require constant database updates and take up little space. Only the program is installed on the user's PC. You receive a file with wallets, their addresses and keys at your disposal. The rest of the information is downloaded from third-party services. Representatives: Electrum, and others.
• Online services , when using which you do not need to install software on your PC. Data processing takes place on the site server. The most popular is Blockchain.

Restoring a wallet on “heavy” and “light” clients

Information about Bitcoin wallets and transactions is stored in wallet.dat . This is the main file, access to which must be carefully “protected” and saved. Experts advise periodically backing up this file and using a strong password to access it.

If you lose your wallet.dat password, it is almost impossible to regain access to it.

This file is not required for all Bitcoin wallet applications. Some of them use a different "architecture".

When writing the material, I tried several “light” programs. I liked MultiBit. Unlike others, it allows you not to bother with creating backup copies of your wallet. She takes upon herself all the worries about their generation.

The program supports several “reservation” options:

• Locally – on the disk space of the client machine.
• Remotely – in cloud storage, which the user opens access to during installation of the application or in its settings.

Local copies of the wallet are located along this path:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\MultiBitHD\unique_folder_name\zip-backup

The folder name is encrypted with a hash. For security purposes, its value is generated by the application separately for each user.

To recover your password or wallet, when entering the program, click the “Recover” button. After this, enter the seed (a secret phrase that is generated by the program during installation) and select the backup file.

Seed words should be stored on a removable keeper or on paper. This 12-word phrase will allow you to recover all addresses, keys and transaction history from your wallet.

Only the version of the application for 64-bit Windows is available on the official MultiBit website. And nothing is said about this. I also came across this rake ☺.

Alternative option

Another “light” client that can be recommended for use is Electrum. It uses a traditional wallet file, which is located in this path:

C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets

File name default_wallet. Its name may vary depending on the program you are using.

You will have to take care of creating backup copies of your wallet yourself. This approach using wallet.dat inherent in most “heavy” and “light” wallets. It is better to create copies of this file after each session of working with the application.

To restore your wallet, just replace the current version wallet.dat to a backup copy. After launching, the application itself asks the user which file to take data from to work with bitcoins.

Recovery via console

Most wallet client applications have a console. Simply put, this is an analogue of the command line. With its help you can find out the private key, and then (in case of loss of the file wallet) restore the wallet. Execution order using Electrum as an example:

• Log in to the console.

• Enter the command in the format:

Dumpprivkey wallet_number

• Press "Enter".
• The resulting value is your private key, which you need to save in a safe place (on a flash drive, in a text file, or on paper).

After losing access to your wallet, reinstall the client application. Then enter the command in the format:

importprivkey private_key

After this, we wait until the data from the blockchain is updated. As a result, you get your addresses and “cryptics” back☺.

Blockchain and other online services

On online wallets, to restore access to your account, you need to specify your registration email. If you “forgot” the password, then you can return the wallet only using the seed.

If the wallet file is deleted

The last hope is to use special utilities to restore the contents of the hard drive. This approach is applicable if Windows crashes, the HDD is damaged, and in other similar “everyday” situations. Now all that remains is to “pull out” the file wallet from a formatted (damaged) screw.

Here are a few such “healing” programs:

Now you are armed with a powerful “weapon”. But I advise you not to relax and carefully protect your Bitcoin wallets from attacks. Use reliable antivirus software, don’t poke your nose into suspicious resources, and don’t reveal your private key and seed to anyone. By following these simple rules, you can protect yourself by 90%. And then the “knowledge” described in this article will never be needed!
