To enter the BIOS settings you need straightaway after turning on (even before the operating system itself boots), press the key several times Del on the keyboard of a personal (stationary) computer, or another key if it is a laptop. The key most often used to enter the BIOS on laptops is F2.

In the once popular and widely used version of the BIOS, this item was located in the main menu:

If we talk about laptops, then everything is somewhat more complicated. In them, the BIOS menu interface can be greatly redesigned and stylized to match the company’s brand.

For example, in an HP laptop the BIOS looks like this. Here, resetting the settings is carried out by selecting the item Restore Defaults.

The name of the item that resets BIOS settings may be different, namely: Load Setup Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults, Reset to Default, Factory Default, Setup Defaults and consonant. The location may also differ; most often this item is located in the tab Exit.

Based on the above, you will need to find this item in your BIOS version (including UEFI) and click on it. Navigation in the BIOS is carried out using keys arrows, and select with the key Enter.

If you do not have access to the BIOS due to a password set, or the computer refuses to turn on at all after “experimenting” with the BIOS settings (optionally, in an attempt to overclock the computer), then the following method of resetting the settings will suit you.

Resetting the BIOS via a jumper on the motherboard

Most computer motherboards have jumpers that physically consist of pins and, if necessary, are shorted using attachments (jumpers). By closing/opening certain jumpers, the configuration of certain PC parameters is carried out.

By closing the jumper that relates to the BIOS, the settings will be reset to the default option.

To reset the BIOS using a jumper, do the following:

Disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet by unplugging the cord from the outlet. After which you need to arm yourself with a screwdriver and unscrew the screws that hold the side cover of the computer.

Having gained access inside, you will need to find a jumper on the motherboard located there, which is responsible for resetting the BIOS settings and parameters. In most cases, this jumper is located near the battery, which powers the BIOS and prevents you from forgetting the settings.

As a guide, the jumper is often labeled accordingly: BIOS RESET, CMOS RESET, CLEAR CMOS, and the text can be abbreviated, for example, CLR_CMOS.

The jumper itself can consist of two or three pins. If there are three pins, then move the jumper to the next pair of pins, and if there are two, then you should borrow a jumper from another place on the motherboard. Just before borrowing a jumper, remember, or better yet, take a photo of its original position.

After this, you need to hold the power button for about 10 seconds. The computer, of course, will not turn on because... completely de-energized, this procedure is simply necessary to reset the BIOS settings.

Having done this, return the jumper to its original position, and then put and screw back the computer cover, connect the power.

Done, the BIOS has been reset. Now you can configure the BIOS settings again, or use those that were set by default.

Method for resetting BIOS with removing the battery

The BIOS reset jumper is in most cases located next to the battery. This is due to the fact that the chip in which the BIOS settings are stored is not non-volatile. The first method works if you have access to the BIOS. To reset the BIOS settings to the factory state if you have forgotten the password, you will have to disassemble the system unit and use a mechanical jumper, changing the position of which interrupts the supply of current to the CMOS battery. The battery is responsible for storing BIOS settings, so if you temporarily turn off the power or remove it, the parameters will be reset to factory settings.


To completely discharge the remaining voltage, hold down the power button of the system unit for 10-15 seconds. The computer is de-energized, so nothing will happen. Then return the jumper to its original position and assemble the system unit. Factory settings have been installed, now all parameters in the BIOS are set to default.

Removing the CMOS Battery

Speaking of the jumper, we have already mentioned the CMOS battery, which is responsible for storing BIOS settings. Accordingly, if you remove it from the motherboard and then insert it back, you can restore the parameters that were set by default. The algorithm of actions is the same as when using a jumper.


After resetting the settings, you need to reinsert the battery and reassemble the system unit. After turning on the computer, there will no longer be any password on the BIOS, and all parameters will return to the factory state.

Reset on laptop

While it is quite easy to disassemble the system unit, you may encounter some difficulties when resetting the BIOS on a laptop. It's good if you can go into the BIOS and restore the default settings by selecting the appropriate mode in the “Exit” section. If a password is set on the BIOS, you will have to disassemble the laptop. Turn the laptop over so the back is facing you. Look to see if there is a small hole on the laptop labeled "CMOS".

If found, insert something sharp into the hole - for example, a paperclip. Wait for 30 seconds to reset the BIOS settings on your laptop. If there is no hole, you will have to remove the back cover and look on the motherboard for the CMOS battery or JCMOS pins.

  1. Disconnect the laptop from the network, disconnect the connected devices (mouse, speakers), remove the battery.
  2. Remove the back cover (on some models it is enough to remove the protection of the RAM and hard drive).
  3. Remove the RAM sticks and hard drive.

Under the RAM strips there should be two contacts that are labeled “JCMOS”. They need to be closed with a screwdriver.

Resetting BIOS settings

Fortunately, there are three options for resetting the BIOS, each of which can be useful in one situation or another.

Method 1: Perform a reset through settings

This method is the easiest to implement, but it may not always help, because if the computer refuses to enter the BIOS, you will have to use one of the methods given below.

  • First, you will need to enter the BIOS. To do this, you will need to turn on the computer and, at the earliest stage of system startup, start pressing the key responsible for entering the BIOS. As a rule, in the vast majority of cases this is F1, F2 or Del. However, a completely different key or even a whole combination can act as a hot button.
  • Once you have entered the BIOS, you can proceed to search for the required partition.

    In older versions of the BIOS, you will need to find the section that mentions the word "Defaults", for example, this item may be called "Load Optimized Defaults"(performing a reset to optimized settings) or "Load Fail-Safe Defaults"(performing a factory reset to fix computer problems). Having found the required item, select it, and then confirm your intention to start the procedure.

    In more recent BIOS versions, which are usually found on laptops, the required reset item may be located in the exit section, that is "Exit". As a rule, this item is called "Load Setup Defaults".

    And finally, in modern versions of BIOS UEFI which can be controlled not only using the keyboard, but also using the mouse, you should find the item "Load Defaults", which can also be located in the section "Exit" or "Save and Exit".

  • Once you start the procedure, you will need to wait for it to finish. We draw your attention to the fact that at this moment, power outages are unacceptable, since a sudden shutdown of the computer can lead to dire consequences.
  • Method 2: Perform a reset using a jumper

    Another method provided for resetting the BIOS, which involves opening the system unit in order to gain access to the motherboard.

  • Completely de-energize the computer by unplugging it from the network, and then open the system case. As a rule, for our task it is enough to remove the side cover of the case. Pay attention to the motherboard - there should be a jumper on it called "CMOS", which will allow us to reset the settings.
  • This jumper (also called a jumper) must be rotated to another position for 5-10 seconds, and then returned to its previous position. If the jumper has only two contacts, you will need to switch it to the opposite one. If the jumper has three contacts, the jumper should be set to the second position.

  • While the jumper is in a different position, press the power button for a few seconds (five is enough), and then release the button and return the jumper to its original position.

  • Reassemble your computer and start it up. From this point on, resetting the BIOS settings can be considered complete.
  • Method 3: Perform a reset using a battery

    There is a special battery on the motherboard that stores the BIOS settings. Removing and reinstalling this battery will allow you to reset all parameters to factory settings.

  • To perform this procedure, we, again, need to gain access to the insides of the system unit. To do this, turn off the power to the computer, remove the system unit case and find the BIOS battery on the motherboard (it is usually located next to the CMOS jumper).
  • Near the battery, press the latch, after which the battery should come unfastened. After 10 seconds, return the battery to its original position.

    Please note that some motherboards are equipped with non-removable batteries. If the battery does not have a latch, you should not “rip out” the battery - this method simply does not suit you.

  • Reassemble your computer and start it up. BIOS reset is complete.
