Alcatel presented a nice smartphone with a simple but memorable name One Touch Star. This device stands out among other similar devices due to its high-quality display matrix, since it is made using AMOLED technology. This means you'll get a screen with vibrant colors and the deepest possible black levels.

Otherwise, the Star is quite typical: a MediaTek MT6577 chipset with two 1 GHz processors, 512 MB of RAM, a good five-megapixel camera with the ability to record HD videos with stereo sound, two slots for installing SIM cards, and a slot for a memory card, wireless technologies Wi-Fi Direct, GPS, FM radio and more.

Now the smartphone is exclusively sold in the MTS retail network at a price of 8,490 rubles and so far only in gray color.

Design, dimensions, control elements

I won’t lie and say frankly that the appearance of the One Touch Star almost completely copies the Apple phone iPhone 4/4S: the same body shape, dark front panel and light sides, the same location of the headphone jack, USB and microphone, power button ( they even repeated the shape). In general, you get the complete feeling that you are holding in your hands the fourth iPhone, only made of plastic. Someone will be indignant about this, but personally I don’t see anything wrong with this, let other companies copy well-known brand devices, but the quality of workmanship should not suffer. Fortunately, everything is great with Star in this regard!

As mentioned earlier, the front panel is black, the lower and upper parts practically merge with the screen. The surface is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass! Additional protection can be considered a thin and small side, protruding above the surface by one millimeter along the perimeter. Fingerprints are noticeable on the screen and can be erased quite easily.

The edging is made of semi-gloss plastic of light gray color, similar to metal. Towards the center on the right and left it narrows slightly, creating a visual effect of thinning the body. The quality of the plastic is good; at least after a month of active use, one shallow scratch appeared on the bottom end.

The lid is also made of semi-gloss dark gray plastic. It's thin but flexible, just like the Samsung Galaxy S3 or S4. Fingerprints on the panel are invisible. Unfortunately, so far only one color solution is available on the Russian market - gray. The company's website presents models in pink, silver and white. Quite bright and pleasant colors. I hope that as soon as the exclusive at MTS passes, devices of these colors will appear in other stores.

The Alcatel One Touch Star smartphone is very compact - 117x60x9.7 mm, weighs only 119 grams - it even fits in a summer shirt pocket, this is especially important now. The Alcatel feels great in the hand thanks to its smooth corners and sloping back surface.

In general, the “Star” was put together well, but in my sample the panel on the back right side came off slightly, and the body creaked a little when pressed.

The front camera, two sensors - lighting and proximity - are located on the front panel. Next to them is an indicator of missed events (flashing or glowing white) and a speech speaker. It has a high enough volume to comfortably hear your interlocutor on the street. The intelligibility is good, the timbre is pleasant, although a little low-frequency. There is no echo or rattling during a call.

Below the screen there are three touch buttons: “Back”, “Home” and “Menu”. Interestingly, the last button performs not only the function of calling the context menu, but also displaying a list of previously launched applications. Without backlighting, the keys are invisible, but with backlighting they are visible even in bright sunshine.

At the bottom there is a microUSB and a microphone; there are no elements on the right. On the left is a thin and flat volume rocker key, which is not very convenient to use due to the fact that it is practically recessed into the body.

On top there is a standard 3.5 mm audio output and a small button to turn the phone on/off.

On the back surface of the device there is a camera eye framed by a chrome insert, a speaker covered with a metal mesh, a flash and a second microphone for noise reduction during a conversation and recording stereo sound when shooting videos.

In order to remove the cover, it must be hooked onto the notch on the bottom edge. On the left there is a slot for installing a microSD memory card, on the right there are two slots SIM1 (2G/3G) and SIM2 (2G only). It is noteworthy that this smartphone does not use standard mini-SIM (25x15x0.76 mm), but micro-SIM (15x12x0.76 mm), i.e. the same as, for example, in Samsung Galaxy S3/4, HTC One, Meizu MX2, iPhone 4/4S and others. So, be careful!

Display

The One Touch Star device is equipped with a screen with a small diagonal of 4 inches, the resolution is standard for budget smartphones - 480x800 pixels, the density is 233 pixels per inch. However, despite the high density, we must not forget that the matrix is made using AMOLED technology, so there is a clearly visible special pixel arrangement - PenTile. This technology has both pros and cons, I think it’s not worth describing them, since we considered many models with a similar matrix.

Despite the small diagonal by modern standards, the touch layer supports as many as 10 simultaneous touches! Sensitivity is good.

The brightness and saturation of colors are high; at tilt angles, color rendition is slightly disrupted: the picture takes on coldish shades. The settings are standard.

Battery

A removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh, 3.7 V, 5.6 Wh is installed. Model – TLiB32A.

The manufacturer claims that the phone should last up to 400 hours in standby mode, and up to 10 hours in talk mode.

With a load of 20-30 minutes of calls per day, about 2 hours of listening to music, 3-4 hours of 3G Internet, the battery was discharged in 6-7 hours. Only when playing music, the battery lasts a little less than 25 hours, only when watching video (maximum brightness, maximum volume in headphones, resolution 800x480) - 4 hours 40 minutes.

The output current of the network adapter is quite large (1 A), so it charges the Stara battery in just 1.5 hours.

Communication capabilities

The smartphone operates in 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz, both SIM cards) and 3G (900/2100 MHz, SIM1 slot only) cellular networks. Speed HSDPA – up to 7.2 Mbit/s, HSUPA – 5.76 Mbit/s.

Instead of the names SIM1/SIM2, you can set your own, for example, “Corporate” or “For the Internet”.

The maximum permissible SAR tested on this phone model is:

  • When used near the head (UMTS 2100 + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth): 0.461 W/kg
  • When worn on the body (GSM 900 + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth): 0.637 W/kg

Available Bluetooth version 4.0 (A2DP) for file and voice transfer. There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (Wi-Fi Direct). The device can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). In “Settings” there is a special item “Modem mode”, which contains: “USB connection” and “Wi-Fi access point”, as well as access point settings and “Bluetooth modem”. USB 2.0 (HighSpeed) is used to “transport” files and synchronize data.

During the entire period of operation, there were no network dropouts, Wi-Fi worked stably, and when using a Bluetooth headset, everything was fine.

Memory and memory card

The smartphone has only 512 MB of RAM. At the moment, this quantity is not that small, but for 8,000 – 9,000 rubles there are already devices with 1 GB of RAM. On average, out of 512 MB on Star, just under 200 MB is available.

The device has 4 GB of internal Flash memory, of which about 2.5 GB is free. In the “Memory” section, you can select where applications will be installed: SD card or internal memory. The gadget supports memory cards up to 32 GB.

Camera

This device has two cameras: one main 5 MP with autofocus, the other front 0.3 MP without autofocus. There is a single-section flash. The maximum photo resolution is 2560x1920 pixels, video resolution is 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second, regardless of lighting level.

The quality of the photos is more or less adequate for the price of the smartphone. There is only one drawback - not very clear photographs taken from a long distance; Portrait and macro photography come out great. Focus is fast and accurate, white balance is slightly off.

It shoots video in HD resolution, the picture quality is average, but autofocus works correctly, and the number of frames does not drop. The sound, as always for MTK6577, is poor due to overloads, but stereo.

The camera interface looks pretty much the same as on any other MediaTek-based device.

Performance and Software Platform

I will not talk for a long time about the speed of the device or describe the behavior in detail, since it uses the well-known Taiwanese chipset MediaTek TM6577 - 2 cores of 1 GHz, graphics accelerator - PowerVR SGX531. Below is brief technical information and performance tests.

Positioning

At the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Alcatel presented a line of bright, lightweight and inexpensive devices under the general name POP. The older model was named x’POP and boasts multi-colored lids, a large 4.5-inch screen and a relatively high qHD resolution. The average s’POP is quite miniature and simple, standing out among the gray mass of smartphones except for its multi-colored panels and the presence of the latest version of Android 4.1. There is also t'POP - an analogue of s'POP, but it does not have a front camera, only 256 MB of RAM, and the OS version is ancient - 2.3.

Only s’POP and x’POP have reached Russia so far. They will be sold only in MegaFon communication stores. The price for the older model is 7,000 rubles, for the younger one – 4,000 rubles. I will be reviewing s’POP, one of the most affordable smartphones running Android 4.1.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The appearance of the device is very simple, but at the same time the design is quite ergonomic. The shape is rectangular, the upper and lower ends are slightly convex and slightly rounded. Dimensions (115x61x12 mm) and weight (122 grams) allow the phone to fit in any pocket, including the chest, s’POP can easily find a place even in small handbags (clutches). The device is comfortable and fits well in the hand thanks to the sloping edges and miniature body.

The thin edging around the perimeter is made of black glossy plastic. The back covers come in several color options: black, white and red. At least these are the “colors” that are available in Russia. In all cases, the plastic coating is “soft-touch” - a velvety material on which there are practically no traces of fingerprints.

The screen is not protected by glass, so if necessary, take care of purchasing a special protective film, as scratches and abrasions quickly appear on the display.

The smartphone is assembled well: it does not creak or play, but when you press on the central area of the back side, it bends slightly towards the battery. When squeezed strongly in the hand, the body does not crunch.

On the front panel at the top there is an indicator of missed events, next to it is the front camera. There is also a light and proximity sensor and a speech speaker. It has an average volume, the interlocutor can be heard clearly, mainly mid and high frequencies are heard. At maximum volume it does not wheeze, there is no echo. The only thing I didn’t like was how the volume is automatically adjusted: if the person on the other end says something loudly, you will hear a very sharp sound in the speaker.

Below the screen are “Back”, “Home” and “Menu”. They are made with translucent white paint; there is a backlight, but it is very dim. There is a microphone under the “Back” button.

On the left is a thin volume rocker key (chromed plastic), slightly raised above the body, and on the right is a camera activation button of the same type. Unfortunately, it doesn't launch the Camera app if the screen is locked.

At the bottom there is a microUSB without a plug, at the top there is a standard 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones or a headset, and an on/off button. The pressure is soft, the stroke is small.

The camera module, framed by a chrome-plated plastic insert, a second microphone for noise reduction during a call, and a speakerphone are located at the top of the rear side.

To open the cover, you need to pry it on the notch on the lower left corner. Below it is a battery, and even lower are two slots for installing SIM cards (3G/2G on the left, 2G on the right) and a microSD memory card.

Comparative sizes:

Display

It has a diagonal of 3.5 inches, the resolution is 320x480 pixels, i.e. standard minimum for Android devices. The physical size of the matrix is 49x73 mm, density is 164 pixels per inch. The screen type is made using TFT-LCD (TN) technology and supports display of 262 thousand shades of color. Sensor type – capacitive, with up to 2 simultaneous touches (“multi-touch”). Sensitivity is good.

The viewing angles are small: when the screen is tilted away from you, the contrast drops, towards you - the image is inverted, when tilted to the left or right, the brightness is lost. Displays like Fly Wizard, Whizz, Aclatel OneTouch 983 and others behave approximately the same way.

The device contains a three-axis accelerometer (BMA222).

In “Screen Settings” you can set auto-shutdown and auto-rotate screen, font size, wallpaper. The brightness is adjusted either manually or automatically by a light sensor. Its maximum value is enough to ensure that the information is readable in the sun.

Battery

The s’POP smartphone uses a removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 1400 mAh, 3.7V, 5.18 Wh. Model TLi014A1. The manufacturer indicates the following data on battery performance: in talk mode it will work up to 5 hours, in standby mode – up to 254 hours, in music player mode – up to 35 hours.

If you use the phone for about seven to eight hours, the battery will be completely discharged provided: 15-20 minutes of calls per day, two hours of using Wi-Fi Internet (Twitter, mail, downloading applications and installing them), about 3 hours of mobile Internet, a couple of hours of listening to music. When playing music, the battery died after 16 hours, video - 4.5 hours.

The device charges from the mains or USB in about two and a half hours.

Communication capabilities

The phone operates in 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and 3G (900/2100 MHz) cellular networks. For third-generation communications, we should say thanks to the new chipset from MediaTek MT6575.

The maximum permissible SAR tested on this phone model is:

  • When used near the head (GSM 900 + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth): 0.856 W/kg
  • When worn on the body (GSM 900 + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth): 0.993 W/kg

HSDPA speed - up to 7.2 Mbit/s - download and upload - 5.76 Mbit/s. Available Bluetooth version 4.0 (with A2DP stereo profile) for file and voice transfer. There were no problems connecting the headsets: the connection is not very fast, but speech is transmitted relatively clearly.

There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). There is even Wi-Fi-Direct. USB 2.0 (HighSpeed) is used for file transfer and data synchronization.

Memory and memory card

The Alcatel 4030D uses 512 MB of RAM. On average, about 200 MB are free.

Despite the fact that the manufacturer indicates 4 GB of built-in Flash memory, 2.3 GB is actually available. There is a slot for installing a microSD memory card up to 32 GB.

Camera

The s’POP device has a 3.2 megapixel camera module without autofocus. There is no flash. The maximum photo resolution is 2048x1536 pixels, video resolution is 640x480 pixels at 30 frames per second, regardless of lighting level.

I got the impression that the device uses the same camera module as the Alcatel 983. I came to similar conclusions by comparing photographs: approximately the same quality and the same reduced dynamic range.

The camera is launched through the menu using a shortcut or a separate button on the right side of the device.

I won’t give the settings, since they are no different from the settings of “bare” Android 4.x. Below are screenshots.

Video characteristics:

  • Format: 3GP
  • Video codec: MPEG-4 Visual, 5800 Kbps
  • Resolution: 640 x 480, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 16 Kbps
  • Channels: 1 channel, 16 KHz

Performance

Unlike most modern devices that operate on a dual-core chipset from MediaTek, this device runs on a single-core MTK6575. The processor (Cortex-A9) “works” at a clock frequency of 1 GHz, produced using 40 nm CMOS technology. PowerVR SGX 531 graphics accelerator from Imagination Technologies.

The hardware and software here are perfectly optimized: nothing slows down or freezes. In short, the model is fast. Almost all toys are suitable, except for ones like NOVA3.

Below is a brief technical specification and performance tests:

Quadrant Standard

Software platform

Despite the low-cost device, this smartphone has a relatively recent version of the Google Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean operating system. This doesn’t make much sense (weak processor, poor screen quality, very simple camera), but it’s nice.

The shell interface is slightly modified (icons in the style of Symbian Anna OS) “bare” Android.

Calls and messages

There is nothing new in this model that would make it stand out in these sections. I refer you to the review of the system - /review/google-android-41.shtml.

And “dual SIM” is implemented very simply: after making a call or pressing the send message button, a menu pops up with the choice of the required SIM card.

Alcatel smartphones are compact, ergonomic devices created by a large French-American company. They are distinguished by their bright design and multifunctionality. The brand presents a line of models in different price segments.

The devices support a variety of GSM standards at low and high frequencies, allowing you to make and receive calls anywhere in the world. Thanks to the built-in browser and 3G support, you can install some instant messengers and applications for communicating on social networks. You can also use your phone as a convenient navigator: the devices are equipped with a global positioning system and an advanced energy-intensive A-GPS system.

Upgraded versions of Alcatel smartphones support the LTE Internet communication standard and provide contactless connection of devices and transmission of data from one to another at speeds of up to 173 Mbit/s. A convenient and intuitive interface facilitates the operation of the device. Interesting games and useful applications will make your leisure time more varied.

Alcatel mobile phones are equipped with a high-resolution camera. By expanding the device’s RAM using memory cards such as microSD, microSDHC, you can create an entire archive of impressive photos and videos. The MP3 player has the ability to set your favorite melody as a ringtone.

Thanks to powerful lithium-ion batteries that last a long time, you can have uninterrupted talk time for up to 36 hours. A “smart” energy saving system will ensure proper energy consumption and user comfort.

Alcatel products occupy their specific niche in the Russian market, as well as in the CIS countries. These are mainly middle-class youth smartphones. But there are also exceptions. Each model is unique in its own way, each has its own audience of admirers. And, of course, everything has its shortcomings.

Alcatel: a little history

Initially, this company had French roots. It received its name in 1985. Its main task was to provide worthy competition and even squeeze out such giants as Siemens in the market and the production of mobile phones became one of several areas of activity of the French company.

In 2004, the Alcatel brand was purchased by the global electronics corporation TCL. Today it can be called the largest Chinese manufacturer of equipment with its main representative office in Huazhou.

At the moment, Alcatel works with such well-known Russian companies as MegaFon and MediaTek. Therefore, not only individual, but also joint samples of smartphones appeared in the manufacturer’s line.

In addition, when expanding the model range, the creators do not forget about the technical characteristics and new systems. That is why many buyers choose this particular brand of mobile phones.

Consumer reviews and main problems in work

Like any modern phone, the Alcatel One Touch smartphone has its strengths and weaknesses. And after the purchase, many users discover a number of problems and shortcomings. Among them, we can distinguish standard ones, which are found in almost all modern lines of smartphones, and individual ones, which are typical mainly for Alcatel models. The most common include:

  • Software problems or delays. These are system freezes, SD search, problems with Internet connection, inability to configure one or another option, application errors, etc. Such shortcomings, according to reviews from owners, can be caused by both factory defects and inept use of the smartphone.
  • Problems connecting individual modules or devices. Often this is GPS or Wi-Fi, as well as working with a computer or laptop via USB. Those who purchased Alcatel One Touch leave reviews that these modules do not work quite stably and constantly turn off.
  • Problems playing music files and applications. This can be caused, among other things, by using the wrong format or damaged tracks. They are trying to fix this by installing a new player.

The main competitive advantages of Alcatel smartphones

Nowadays our electronics market offers a huge variety of equipment. At the same time, you can find models for every taste. What makes consumers choose Alcatel One Touch products over many other smartphones?

The main advantages of these models include:

  • Competitive price. The presented models have an optimal price-quality ratio. Here you can find many quite budget options for smartphones and phones with good hardware and design.
  • Modern technical characteristics and capabilities. Despite the fact that the phones are in the middle price segment, they have all the qualities of modern models from large and well-known manufacturers. There is Wi-Fi, support for SD cards of various formats, etc.
  • Ergonomic design. Chinese manufacturers, unlike many competitors, pay great attention to the appearance of Alcatel One Touch smartphones. Consumer reviews speak of the functionality and convenience of all keys and the phone as a whole.

Otherwise, each individual buyer will have their own pros and cons. After all, this is a deeply individual matter.

The lineup

To date, Alcatel has already released more than 7 series. There are both executive and youth models. Some of the most popular, according to Alcatel One Touch buyers, were:

  • Idol Series. This flagship phone has conquered not only the Chinese but also the Russian market. It was he who became the founders of such models as Ultra, Mini, X and X+.
  • Hero. These are smartphones with a huge 6-inch screen. It is on him that the entire bet is placed. It's bright, fast and responsive.
  • Scribe Pro and HD. This gadget was released in 2013. It can be called, rather, musical, since the sound quality and volume here are at the proper level.
  • Star. A well-equipped and quite budget smartphone. A version with two SIM cards is also available.
  • Fire. This one is special. Instead of the usual Android and Windows operating systems, it has a completely new, unique Firefox OS system.
  • Pixi. This is an inexpensive, but quite reliable and functional smartphone. It is perfect for children, as it has a low-resolution screen and is easy to operate.

One Touch Idol X: characteristics and reviews

Let's start with the stated benefits and functionality. Firstly, this is the first smartphone in the Alcatel line with a Full-HD screen. Its main differences are the MTK processor and the thinnest display frames. They are even less than 2 mm. The case itself is also thin - only 7 mm. For its price, the smartphone is quite well made and multifunctional.

Now let's take a closer look at this Alcatel One Touch. Customer reviews indicate several positive aspects:

  • Dimensions and weight. With such a large screen, this smartphone weighs only 120 g.
  • Build quality. Despite the low cost, this smartphone is made to last.
  • Sensitive sensor. The screen responds easily and quickly to any action. There is virtually no slowdown when scrolling through windows.
  • Loud speakers and good sound quality.

It is also worth noting the characteristics of this Alcatel One Touch smartphone. It has 2 Gb of RAM, a good camera and a fast processor.

There are also several disadvantages:

  • When recording video, autofocus constantly jumps, and therefore clarity is significantly lost.
  • Volume control often fails.
  • The minimum screen brightness is too high.

Otherwise the phone is quite competitive.

One Touch Idol Mini

This, one might say, is a mini-version of a regular branded smartphone with a recognizable design. From the name it is clear that it is quite miniature. The width of the smartphone is only 8 mm. And it weighs 97 grams.

Alcatel One Touch Mini runs on Android OS and, of course, like all Alcatel, uses exclusively its own interface. They produce two versions of this gadget - with one or two SIM cards. This phone has its advantages and disadvantages. Its positive qualities include:

  • Brand recognizable design. Moreover, all the buttons are located quite conveniently, despite the size of the smartphone.
  • Good sound quality and volume. The speaker is located in such a way that even when the phone is lying on the table, it does not overlap at all.
  • Great display. It accepts up to 5 clicks at a time. The brightness of the screen is adjusted automatically. Viewing angles are quite wide.

If you study reviews of this Alcatel One Touch, you can highlight several main disadvantages:

  • The smartphone shows average battery life results. Therefore, with active use, it discharges in a few hours.
  • Small amount of memory - only 512 MB. At the same time, the phone has a lot of pre-installed programs.
  • Weak front camera - only 0.3 megapixels.

Alcatel Pop

A good budget multifunctional gadget. You can choose a model with two SIM cards, which is quite convenient. The most popular representatives of the series can be called Alcatel One Touch C5 and C3. Their main differences are in cameras, display size and dimensions.

Pop series models have a bright, cheerful shell. Despite the quite affordable price, they are assembled with quite high quality. The design of these smartphones is simple and recognizable.

Like many other models, Pop phones have their pros and cons. Good qualities include:

  • Optimal balance of functionality, performance and price.
  • High-quality assembly - nothing flies out anywhere, does not wobble or creak.
  • Built-in worker that makes work easier for travelers.

There are several tangible disadvantages:

  • The cameras do not meet modern requirements. Agree, 3.2 and 5 megapixels weakly compete with 12 megapixels and more.
  • Low quality display. This concerns brightness - they look rather dim.

One Touch Ultra

Another representative of the Idol family. Ultra is the most in the Alcatel line. Its width is only 6.5 mm and weighs 115 g. The company presented it at CES 2013 as a flagship, along with the Idol model.

The Alcatel One Touch Ultra smartphone has the following advantages:

  • Large (4.65 inches) and bright screen. The picture is colorful thanks to AMOLED technology.
  • Good battery capacity. A charge of 1800 mAh is enough for almost the whole day.
  • Decent sound quality and volume. However, this is only on a hard surface.

Despite the fact that the manufacturer positions this gadget as a flagship, its only competitive feature is its thin body. Otherwise, this is a completely standard budget smartphone, which has a number of disadvantages:

  • No standard headphone jack. This is due to the same subtlety.
  • There is no flash card slot. There is only built-in memory, which sooner or later may not be enough.
  • The smartphone is quite slow. Despite 1 GB of RAM, the device constantly slows down, even when taking photographs.

Alcatel Star: review
