A modern router is capable of scanning, checking whether the channel is free, or detecting excess signal. You can easily find a free window. Often the router firmware needs to be updated. Be careful! A power loss will interrupt the update process - instead of a Wi-Fi channel scanner, you will get a pile of scrap metal. The wireless access point can only be restored by an official service center or a technically savvy Kulibin.

Reasons for use

External interference reduces the speed of information flow. The bitrate drops noticeably. Try placing the router next to a working microwave oven - miracles will begin immediately. Interference is created by telephones, the sun, industrial and military facilities. Even the USB 3 interface is a little foul.

The channel scanner shows a list of available SSIDs, ignoring extraneous factors. Therefore, even a visually free niche sometimes works poorly. Consider software features when building a home network.

If you notice a significant decrease in speed, use shielding and install directional antennas. Avoid crossing the beam line with your body. Microwave radiation is extremely harmful and is perfectly absorbed by the aqueous media of the body. Memory, intelligence, blood counts deteriorate, and sleep is disturbed. Immunity declines.

Router admin panel

Even the TP-Link 300 series can recognize network congestion. The updated firmware works wonders. The hardware itself begins to look for free channels, selecting (even automatically) free bands. The screen will show amazing things: neighbors literally occupied the same rooms. The smart device will monitor and show the status of networks for the user to check.

The screen clearly demonstrates the above. If the neighbors had bothered to regularly update the firmware, a check with an analyzer would have shown a fundamentally different picture.

Updating the router firmware

TP-Link firmware update option is the best. You immediately receive a ready-made tool for monitoring frequencies. Of course, the router is only capable of testing its own operating range (2.4; 5; 60 GHz).

  1. Always take the firmware from the official website.
  2. Make sure the following settings match:
    • Version.
    • Model.

The range of information varies greatly. Select a file by carefully studying the label. If the latter is missing, don't despair. Hardware and firmware versions are often indicated by the admin panel. Avoid being arbitrary: an experimental test can kill your equipment.

The software update procedure will require access. We believe that setting up the router itself is as simple as possible. As a last resort, perform a hard reset of the equipment by pressing the appropriate button.

  1. Download the firmware file.
  2. Record to PC.
  3. Update the software via the cable by selecting the appropriate item in the router's admin panel.
  4. The program requires a cable connection. Otherwise, a fatal crash is possible. Also take the trouble to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

inSSIDer

Software that can determine the load density of Wi-Fi channels is widely known. The strange name inSSIDer implies the device’s ability to catch SSIDs traveling on the air. The replacement for the aging NetStumbler will please mainly Windows users.

  1. Visit the official project website metageek.com/products/.
  2. Find the product you need.
  3. Get ready to pay for the license.

The utility will provide the user with:

  • Workload.
  • Achievable speed.
  • Writes available SSIDs (access point names).
  • Will display specific parameters, such as RSSI, allowing you to analyze the signal.
  • The program can catch MAC addresses.

Attention! The utility is powerless to track interference from household appliances, radio broadcasts, mobile phones, and Bluetooth.

Free option

Considering what was said, Android users breathed a sigh of relief: they will have to definitely go through the channel numbers manually. However, there is another option. Yes! Acrylic WiFi (acrylicwifi.com/). The new product is free for now, please download it.

The utility collects:

  1. SSID
  2. BSSID
  3. Channel congestion.
  4. Security type and much more.

Are your neighbors shamelessly stealing your Internet? Let's check it out - a small and free computer program WiFi Guard will allow you to quickly scan your WI-FI network and identify Internet thieves.

Today, many Internet users have a WI-FI router at home that creates a wireless network. This is very convenient and allows you to get rid of wires throughout the apartment. But there are people (usually evil neighbors) who can take advantage of your carelessness and connect to this network.

Checking your wireless network

Unfortunately, many people forget to put basic password to their wi-fi network and don’t even suspect that someone is connected to them for free. For these people, they came up with the WiFi Guard program, which will make them think about security.

Don't have a WI-FI password?

Then we are coming to you - we love free Internet...

WiFi Guard program

The free WiFi Guard computer program understands Russian (and many others) perfectly...

...and immediately after installation it opens the settings window...

...in which you need to set your network adapter. It usually has an IP address starting with 192.168...

In the second tab, you can enable a sound notification when any device connects to your Wi-Fi network...

After setting up the program, you can start scanning...

Identify your devices on the network by IP or mac addresses and name them for easy recognition next time - right-click on the line and “Edit”...

If you don’t know the addresses of your devices, simply, using the method of elimination, disconnect them one by one from the network and rescan the wi-fi network.

Now experts will say that the network can be viewed using the system, but the WiFi Guard program has advantages - a sound alert when a new device is connected, it can scan the network at a specified interval, and detects devices with firewalls that do not respond to ping.

WiFi Guard does not protect your wi-fi network, but only displays connected devices!

After identifying other people's devices on your network, take security measures - at least set a password (or change it) in the router. For more powerful protection, the Internet can help you - there are many tips and various programs you can find for this.

Hello! In this review we will talk about existing Wi-Fi network scanners and the Wi-Fi Scanner application of the same name. Especially for those who want to scan something at home or simply choose the best channel for the operation of their home router.

All applications have similar functionality. Choose to your taste and color!

Due to the fact that scanning is carried out via a hardware Wi-Fi module and only in a physical environment, it is currently impossible to do it online. Download any program you like and use it.

Not the most popular program, but many are looking for it. Plus, the name just fits the theme perfectly. And free! After all, what could be simpler: a Wi-Fi scanner, only in fashionable English transcription)

But we don’t fall for all these great dust-throwing affairs of programmers. Our job is to see what's under the hood. And under the hood everything is pretty much the same as everywhere else:

We have the original English version, but folk craftsmen have already done everything for us - there is a translation into Russian (although it is not needed there, but the link is the Russian version). A beautiful and clear graphical interface - for those who don’t like hellish consoles. All basic functionality:

  • Displays networks in your access area.
  • All information about networks - name, signal strength, MAC, frequency, speeds, standards, current encryption.
  • What I liked were the convenient filters. In terms of network quality, 802.11 standards, encryption, bandwidth. Bomb! If there are a lot of networks, I selected the ones I needed and went to study them.

Other popular programs

And in this section I just want to show very popular programs on the market that most people use to analyze wireless networks. Many of them are free, the rest you can simply get acquainted with. But the functionality differs from each other not so much.

Free version of another major commercial product. The picture already shows that it is ideal for scanning. Full minced meat:

  • All current standards up to 802.11n11ac
  • Dual band support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
  • Beautiful power graphs with distribution by channel - you can see where the load is least and connect to it.
  • The only reason I put it in first place is that it can also do very basic network security testing - it tries to find obvious Wi-Fi passwords and manufacturer's WPS keys.

Everything else will be superfluous. It works and can be used!

inSSIDer

Another popular tool for exploring surrounding hotspots. Many videos in their channel search training use just this. In my opinion, this is currently the most popular scanner.

Homedale

Simple and convenient. A separate tab with a minimum of information for viewing available networks. And next door is a tab with a graph of visible networks, which allows you to scan channels. Portable. Available for both Windows and MacOS.

Ekahau HeatMapper

I am posting this as an addendum. This is not a classic scanner, but it allows you to make heat maps of indoor coverage areas depending on the signal level.

For smartphones

If necessary, you can try scanning networks with your phone. For me, using a laptop for these purposes is more interesting, but in the absence of fish, Android will do. In the Play Market, if you rummage a little, there are a lot of applications available that suit us. Here is what has been at least slightly tested and can at least somehow be called a scanner:

  • AirScout live
  • Wi-Fi Analyzer is my choice on it. Tests perfectly. And he draws networks, and the workload, and comes up with his own rating to help in the choice. It is also beautifully and simply decorated.

What is it for?

Usually those who come here already know what they need this application for. But you never know, here is a list of the main practical problems to be solved:

  • Searching for the best channel - so that the connection and connection speed are stable, without interruption by neighbors. Those. The scanner starts, searches for free channels, and installs them on the router.
  • Getting to know your neighbors' networks, including hidden ones - just getting to know your surroundings... or not just.
  • Network security analysis.
  • Constant monitoring of networks – availability, signal levels, distance.

I will dwell a little on the brief theory of channels. In the same popular 2.4 GHz band, there are 13 of them available. In this case, the channels overlap each other and create interference:

At the same time, Windows 7 and Windows 10 do not see channel 13 inside themselves (banned in the USA, legs grow from there). So, in fact, in this frequency range we are dealing with 12 channels.

In total, you just need to look at the schedule, look at the free channels and connect to them. And speed and reliability will improve almost instantly.

In practice, one should not expect miracles from this action. If in doubt, try it. In most cases it does not affect the Internet. Understanding that the problem lies precisely in the field of interference comes with experience.

And a little more for reference. In routers, the “auto” mode is usually turned on to select a channel. For most cases it is sufficient. But if you really intend to set the channel manually, you will have to go into the router settings.

The interface settings of routers are slightly different from each other, but the essence is the same - it is everywhere and is done through the wireless network settings. Go there and choose a channel. Using my old TP-Link as an example:

I'll finish here. If you have your own successful experience using scanners, write in the comments. You can also leave your wishes or questions there. See you later!.

Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is one of the most used wireless communication standards in the modern world. Mobile Internet has not yet received widespread development due to limited technical capabilities and high cost. But there are different kinds of routers in every apartment and almost every office. Moreover, Wi-Fi zones are appearing in more and more parks, squares, and public transport. High-speed free access is one way to lure people to a cafe or supermarket.

It is not surprising that special applications that allow you to find available networks and show their characteristics are gaining popularity. Such programs are called scanners or analyzers. Before looking at what a Wi-Fi scanner is and how to use it, let's clarify what characteristics a network basically has and what useful things you can learn about it.

Wi-Fi network settings

Below are the main parameters of wireless networks that characterize their quality and availability:

  • Standard - affects speed, quality and encryption. The following standards exist:
    1. 11b is the very first and practically not used now, with a low level of security, unreliable WEP encryption type, low speed up to 11 Mbit/sec.
    2. 11g is more advanced, speed reaches 54 Mbps, supports WPA2 security protocol.
    3. 11i is even more modern, supporting WPA2 encryption, speed 125 Mbit/s.
    4. 11n - relevant today, provides higher throughput, coverage area, speed of 300 Mbit/s.
  • Different types of security:
    1. WEP is not a very reliable option, since part of the key is dynamic and changes periodically, and is repeated at certain intervals, which makes it susceptible to hacking.
    2. WPA - works on the same algorithm, but with a more frequently changing key and packet integrity protocol.
    3. WPA2 is an improvement on WPA with a stronger encryption algorithm.
    4. 1X is a security standard that includes several protocols and is used in corporate networks.
    5. VPN is a virtual private network that provides almost 100% security and is also used for corporate networks.
  • Channel - frequency range on which the router operates. In Russia there are 13 channels with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, 3 of which do not overlap (1, 6 and 11). Some more expensive routers operate at a frequency of 5 GHz, there are a larger number of non-overlapping channels.

The Wi-Fi scanner is designed to collect information on the above indicators, as well as data about the network name (SSID), MAC address, and signal strength.

Scanning networks in Windows

Analyzers designed for Windows networks are the most functional and provide detailed information. In addition, they sometimes allow you to change settings where possible.

Where can such a scanner program be useful? If you need access to the network, then using it you can quickly analyze those in the access zone and not protected by a password. The application is also used to increase connection speed, as it allows you to analyze channel congestion and switch the router to a less loaded one, where there is less interference.

Popular programs for Windows OS are:

  1. Download the program from the manufacturer's website (it provides a free trial) and install it on your computer.
  2. A list of networks and their parameters is displayed at the top of the program window.
  3. Below there are four tabs: a welcome tab with advertising, TimeGraph - shows a signal graph, then 2 tabs with a frequency of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. They show channel usage graphs on those frequencies.
  4. Look at the busiest channels: those on which a large number of routers intersect - and change yours to a freer one. Moreover, if there are channels that are equally loaded, but the routers have a weak signal on one of them, then it is better to choose it. There will be less interference and better speed.

Thus, using specially created software, it is possible to find free Wi-Fi networks and improve the speed of your router by switching to a less congested channel. The standard Windows utility does not have such capabilities. The router settings often include auto-selection, but it does not always work well. Such scanners also exist for Android and iOS mobile devices; they can be downloaded from PlayMarket and AppStore. They have fewer capabilities, but still allow you to obtain the necessary information.
