Download lnk file for Windows 7. Personal computer from A to Z

Often during installation new program The association of files to open is lost.

What is a file association?- This is a kind of “law” for the system, in which it is indicated with which program it should open this or that file.

The association directly depends on, i.e. if the file has the extension .avi or .mp4, then the system looks at it and determines that it is a video file and looks for an association with installed program to watch the video.

Why does the file association get lost?
When you install a program for or or even etc. utilities instead of standard ones (already pre-installed in Windows), then when installing the program they usually ask which files to associate them with (you need to check or uncheck the boxes next to file types) and often the user leaves everything as is.
And then it turns out that the installed program is not suitable as an alternative, or you want to open the movie through another player, but when you start the video, it still opens through the one for which the association is registered.

You can, of course, for one case right-click on the file and select the menu item To open with select the program you need to open

But don’t do this every time you open a file!

It is much better to designate the main program to open the file, and if something happens, open it using another one.

How can I assign a program to open a certain type of file?

Method 1: in Open with
We do exactly the same as I described above - RMB on the file and select the item To open with, only now in the list we are looking not for the program to open, but for the item Select program at the very bottom of the list, which we click.
A window like this will appear in which we select the program you need. Don't forget to look and check the box next to it Use the selected program for all files of this type

If the program you need is not available, click the button Review... and look for it in the list of already installed programs in the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders. Or maybe in another place where you installed it.

Method 2: in Properties
RMB on the file -> at the very bottom, Properties. A window will open in which we press the button Change

A window will open, as in method 1, in which you need to select a program.

Method 3: via Control Panel
Start -> Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Select default programs
This window will open in which you need to select a program and at the bottom the item Select defaults for this program

A window will open in which you need to select file extension associations and click the button Save

Restoring associations
If, as a result of careless actions with or because of viruses, your associations with files in Windows XP have been lost, then you will be helped by the information collected by Microsoft certified specialist Doug Knox to adjust the parameters system registry Windows.
For windows 7 exe, lnk, bat, cmd and jpg
After unpacking, agree to make changes and reboot.

How to reset file associations
This cannot be done using standard methods or through the registry. But there is a certain enthusiast who made a program with the help of which this became possible.
Download the program, then select the file type and click Delete file type

That's it, the associations have been reset and you can set the default program for opening files.

All file types in Windows OS are associated with certain applications. This means that when accessing a particular file, it will automatically be launched by the exact program that is assigned to it in the registry (for example, documents with the .doc extension are opened Microsoft Office). However, if data from the registry is changed or damaged, files may open incorrectly, that is, not with the tools that were installed for them by default.

A similar situation can occur during a system failure or viral infection. In the Windows 7 operating system there are several standard methods restoration of associations:

  • using the “Open with” command;
  • through a recovery archive;
  • via the command line.

There are also additional resources that are simply irreplaceable in cases where the built-in resuscitation methods are not suitable.

Before you restore file associations in Windows 7, you need to scan your computer for malware.

Otherwise, the solution to the problem will be temporary.

Using the "Open with" function

This method of returning default value associations is considered the simplest. However, for him successful implementation the user must know which application is responsible for opening a particular document.

Restoring standard associations is done as follows:

Restoring the association using this method is not suitable for files such as .exe, shortcuts and folders.

Using the registry archive

If you have problems with the normal opening of executable files.exe, managed applications.cpl, installers.msi, shortcuts and folders, then you can restore them by downloading the special windows archive ResetFileAssociations.zip. For each version operating system there is its own archive, that is, an application downloaded for Vista will not work for Windows 7, etc.

The resuscitation procedure will be as follows:

To change data in the registry, you must have administrator rights.

Another way out of this situation is to download a backup copy of the Windows registry saved on your computer (backup document). Saving the registry is very useful feature, which allows you to get rid of many problems associated with system failures and virus attacks.

To create a registry backup, you must:

If you need to make any changes to the registry (for example, restore default file associations), you should enter the folder where you saved the backup copy and run the executable file.

Restoring associations using the command line

This method allows you to restore the association of files in Windows with any extension. To do this you need:

  1. When restarting the PC, press F8 and select the appropriate item in the boot method selection window.
  2. Entering the mode command line, run the association command for the damaged file type (assos.bat=batfile, assos.exe=exefile, etc.).

Using additional software

In addition to the methods built into the Windows system for restoring associations, there are also additional software, allowing you to solve this problem. One such program is File Association Fixer, which is capable of reviving 18 of the most popular associations. It does not require installation. Just open the file with the .exe extension, select the required associations and click Fix Selected.

Also a good resource is the CleanAutoRun application, which, after launch, restores all associations automatically.

If you have problems with .exe executable files, then in order to run the programs described above, you need to additionally change the default value of .exe to .com.

7 ways to restore file associations in Windows

In this article, we will look at ways to restore or change file associations in Windows. A file association is the association of a file type with a specific application through which this file is launched to perform an action.

For example, after clicking on the executable file “EXE”, the program will launch; after clicking on the file in the “JPEG” format, the file will open in a program that has an association with this file type.

Sometimes, a file association violation occurs on a computer, which occurs due to incorrect user selection, or as a result of malicious software.

At wrong choice, the user will not be able to open the file of this type on your computer, due to the fact that the program chosen by mistake does not support opening files of this type. Moreover, there are enough serious cases when, due to incorrect matching of file types, work on the computer is paralyzed.

After clicking on the shortcut, the program for opening files of this type does not start; another one opens instead, which cannot open required file, or nothing happens on the computer at all.

The way out of this situation is to change the association for files of this type. There are two options to solve the problem: change the association for specific file this type (suitable for regular files), or resetting the association settings to default in Windows, using programs or by making changes to the registry.

In the first case, to restore the correct association, the change will affect only the file of this type. In the second case, all default file associations will be changed, the file associations will be the same as on the newly installed Windows.

Changing file association using "open with"

You can change the file association using operating system tools. After clicking on the file, select “Open with” in the context menu, and then in the drop-down list, click on “Select another application”.

The window that opens asks the question: “How do you want to open this file?” The Windows operating system will offer you programs that it considers suitable for opening a file of this type. In Windows 7 these windows look a little different.

Please note that the choice of system is not always correct. Therefore, if you do not know which application should open a file of this type, uncheck the box next to “Always use this application to open .*** files.” Thus, through experience you will be able to select the appropriate program. Next time, activate this item in order to automatically open a file of this type.

It is quite possible that there will not be a suitable option in the proposed list of programs. For search the desired program, click on the “More applications” link. Next, in the Explorer window, find the required program on your computer.

File Type Mapping

I will show this method in example windows 10 (other versions of Windows have a similar algorithm of actions). Go to the “Start” menu, then “All applications”, “System”, “Default programs”. In the Default Programs window, click the Match file types or protocols to specific programs link.

In the window that opens, you will be asked the question: “How do you want to open this file now?” Select another application.

If the associations of executable files (exe files), folders, shortcuts (lnk files), registry files (reg files), etc. are broken, the methods described above will not help. You can restore default file associations in Windows using special programs.

Restoring file associations in Windows 7

We really hope that this article will become the final destination for you in your search for the truth on the Internet regarding restoring file associations in Windows.

File associations are the operating system's name for the relationship between a file type and the application responsible for opening it.

So, for example, in standard windows configurations 7, for opening text file*.txt is responsible for Notepad, for opening *.mp3 - windows Media Player, for *.jpg - Fax and image viewer, and so on...

But sometimes, for reasons of poor security, childhood, or just pranks, these connections are broken or lost. And the “orgy” begins. Music can open in Notepad, txt tries to “play” in the video player, etc.

It's good if the problem is only with txt files, mp3, or jpg. Then it is not difficult to repair the connection. But if the connection of *.exe files or the connection of the *.lnk shortcut is broken, then chaos really begins on the computer.

As soon as the desktop background appears, all programs registered in startup try to start through some other programs. There is no other way to call it horror.

There are several solutions to this problem, all of them different. We will consider some briefly, some in more detail.

1. Restoring the previous system state

The easiest way to restore connections is to roll back the system to the moment when everything was working. This method is the most preferable, since there is no risk of making things even worse than they already are. But! This method will not work if the association of *.exe files is broken - something else will simply open instead of the recovery program. But if everything is fine with the exe and lnk connections, you can try the following:

Click the button that opens the Start menu. Enter the command in the search bar:

The desired object will appear in the results window. Run it as Administrator as shown in the figure:

The System Restore utility will launch. Click the button.

In the list of recovery points, select the date at which file associations were in order. Don't forget to check the box as shown in the picture to see everything possible options. Press again.

After clicking the button, the system recovery process will begin. It may last for several minutes. The computer will also restart. Restoring file associations in windows 7 or 8 will be restored.

2. Restoring file associations using registry tweaks.

In Windows, all settings, every single one, are stored in the so-called Windows Registry. This is where the associations of the files that we have to restore are stored. This can be done manually, or you can use tweaks, or otherwise reg files.

The manual editing method involves a lot of hassle, especially if shortcuts and applications do not launch.

Therefore, it is easier to make changes to the registry automatically.

Here, as in the previous version, there is one small but... The association for *.reg files should work

We offer you a choice of downloading one of two archives - zip and rar. There is no difference between them. Whichever one is unpacked we will use.

Restoring file associations - ZIP archive.

Restoring file associations - RAR archive.

The downloaded file must be downloaded and saved to any convenient location. A desktop will also do. Let's unpack the archive.

The created folder contains tweaks for recovery windows associations XP, 7 and many tweaks are suitable for 8.

Run double click reg file containing a problematic extension in its name. For example, we have Windows 7 and a problem with launching LNK shortcuts. Select the appropriate file - lnk_fix_w7.reg

If you have disabled the display of file extensions, then you will simply see lnk_fix_w7

Since to play popular types of video, audio, text and some other files in Windows system standard functionality is provided, namely staff programs systems are initially set by default to open the file types they support when you double-click on those files. But as you install it into the system third party programs This situation will change. During the installation process third party software often takes over the role of default programs for supported file types. And such software, accordingly, arbitrarily makes settings in file associations - binding specific programs to specific file types to open them by double-clicking. True, there are also programs that, during the installation process, offer the user to manually configure file associations - for example, select not all file types, but only some. Or even completely refuse to link files to the installed program.

Opening a movie in a new media player window or a link in a new browser window, which was automatically and quietly installed in addition to another, usually free, program is not the best a big problem. More precisely, it’s not a problem at all, because this is a natural consequence of the last installed program intercepting its file types. Things will be much more complicated when, after unsuccessful experiments with Windows settings or as a result of the penetration of malware, associations fail system files. Failure in the associations of executable .exe files of programs and .lnk files of shortcuts will make them impossible to launch. So, instead of launching the desired program, we may end up launching some other program. Or it may be like this: Windows will think that to run one program another program is needed. Naturally, the system will not find such a thing, and it will have no choice but to offer a search for a match on the Internet or in Windows store. No less problematic will be the failure of the system file associations .msi, .bat, .cpl, which will make it impossible to uninstall programs installed on the system, open folders or sections of the control panel, and the operation of others Windows functions.

Such problems can be solved by changing default programs and restoring default file associations. We will consider all this in detail below.

1. Setting default programs in Explorer

Get back your favorite browser, text or graphics editor, media player, other program so that they are associated with supported files, you can Windows Explorer. Right-click on the file of the desired type and select “Open with”.

In Windows 7, in the window that appears, click the browse button.

And we indicate the executive file by finding it on the C drive among the installed programs or in the storage location in the case of portable programs.

We check that the use of this program is checked for all files of this type. Click "Ok".

In Windows 8.1 and 10, when you select the “Open with” command, you will see the same essence, but in a different design. If the proposed list of programs does not contain the one you need, expand the list by clicking “More applications” (or “Advanced”).

Click the option to search for another application.

And in the Explorer window we indicate the path to the executive file. To ensure that the selected program always opens this type of file, check the “Always use this application...” checkbox.

You can also assign a default program for a particular file type in the properties of a separately selected file. Call the context menu on the file and click “Properties”.

In the “Application” column, click “Change”.

And indicate the desired program - a modern application, a program installed on the system, or portable program.

Context menu on files - the only way setting portable software as default programs. But for programs installed on the system there is also a toolkit included in the panel Windows management.

2. Setting default programs in the control panel

Let's go to system panel management. Fast access it is available in the Windows 7 Start menu

and after pressing +X in Windows 8.1 and 10.

In all versions of Windows, the further path and functions will be the same. In the Control Panel window, select the “Programs” section.

And then in the “Default Programs” subsection, click “Set default programs.”

We will see a list of programs installed on the system and modern/universal applications in the case of Windows 8.1 and 10. By selecting a program on the left on the right side of the window, you can set it as the default program. And this program will henceforth open all supported files when you double click on them.

Not all types of files can be assigned to programs and applications in the list, but only some.

In the list of file types that opens, uncheck those that we do not want the program to play by default and click “Save.”

Using the same principle, you can configure default opening programs for each individual file type. Returning to the window of the “Default Programs” subsection of the control panel, click on another item – “Assign a program to open files of this type.”

Now in the list we will see not programs, but, on the contrary, file types in alphabetical order. By selecting the desired format and clicking the “Change program” button, in this way, in fact, we will assign a program for this type of files that will open them by default.

In Windows 8.1 and 10, after the list of file types, logs for launching applications, Chrome applications, individual mail functions or Skype functions, etc. will be placed. Mapping these protocols to their applications is something that should not be experimented with for the sake of idle interest. After all, as a rule, these protocols are tailored to specific functions of the system and programs.

3. Modern default program settings for Windows 8.1 and 10

Set up desktop programs and modern applications By default, for each individual file type in Windows 8.1, you can do so both in the Control Panel and in the standard Settings application. The essence of these methods is the same, but the interface is different. Press the +Q keys and enter the query “by default” in the search field. In the search results, select “Default application settings”.

In the modern program settings interface, file types and protocols will be presented separately by default.

To set the default program for a specific file type, click the plus button or the icon existing program and indicate required - application or the executable file of the desired program.

The same format for default program settings is present in Windows 10. But it is called, like the Control Panel section, “Default Programs”.

In addition to the ability to customize programs according to Windows default 10 also provides the ability to reset file associations to the default ones, as they were immediately upon installation of the system.

4. Restoring default file associations

The methods discussed above will help in case of failure of document, media and other associations user files. However, if we are dealing with a failure of system files, in particular, the types .exe and .lnk mentioned above, then a more serious intervention is needed by editing the system registry. But we will not edit it manually, but will take a simpler path and resort to importing ready-made .reg files - service files intended for making changes to Windows registry. We will download .reg files specially designed for restoring file associations to default settings on the Internet.

4.1. For Windows 7

For Windows 7, such .reg files are posted on the website Sevenforums.Com. By clicking the “Download” button, you can download all available .reg files in one folder at a time.

But we can only upload individual ones.

Double-click the downloaded .reg file.

We confirm the launch.

We confirm the continuation of the process.

4.2. For Windows 8.1

Using the same principle, we restore default file associations in Windows 8.1. We download from the Eightforums.Com website either individual .reg files, for example, to restore .exe or .lnk formats, or all .reg files in one folder.

We launch the required .reg file and confirm the action.

4.3. For Windows 10

.reg files that restore default file associations in Windows 10 can be downloaded from Tenforums.Com.

As in previous cases, run the required .reg file and confirm the action.

5. File Association Fixer program to restore default file associations

To restore default file associations, as an alternative to the previous method, you can use free program File Association Fixer. This program works with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 and will help restore system file associations, in particular .exe and .lnk, to their default values. Launch the program, go to the “Fix Files” tab, check the boxes required types files and click “Fix Selected” at the bottom.

File Association Fixer provides a way to run itself even if the “.exe” file association fails. To run the program in this case, you must manually change the extension executable file programs from.exe to.com.

Have a great day!
