Software reset method

Resetting the BIOS through the corresponding menu item

The simplest and most logical way to reset BIOS settings is to use the menu item that is available in the settings of the BIOS itself.

Resetting the BIOS via a jumper on the motherboard

Most computer motherboards have jumpers that physically consist of pins and, if necessary, are shorted using attachments (jumpers). By closing/opening certain jumpers, the configuration of certain PC parameters is carried out.

By closing the jumper that relates to the BIOS, the settings will be reset to the default option.

To reset the BIOS using a jumper, do the following:

Disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet by unplugging the cord from the outlet. After which you need to arm yourself with a screwdriver and unscrew the screws that hold the side cover of the computer.

As a guide, the jumper is often labeled accordingly: BIOS RESET, CMOS RESET, CLEAR CMOS, and the text can be abbreviated, for example, CLR_CMOS.

The jumper itself can consist of two or three pins. If there are three pins, then move the jumper to the next pair of pins, and if there are two, then you should borrow a jumper from another place on the motherboard. Just before borrowing a jumper, remember, or better yet, take a photo of its original position.

After this, you need to hold the power button for about 10 seconds. The computer, of course, will not turn on because... completely de-energized, just this procedure necessary to reset BIOS settings.

Having done this, return the jumper to its original position, and then put and screw back the computer cover, connect the power.

How can I reset the BIOS?

It is also important to know: in the case of points 3 to 5 (see Table of Contents above), it is necessary to open the system unit or open the laptop case, this way you can lose the device’s warranty. But, if you don’t want to lose the warranty, and the laptop does not allow you to boot into the BIOS, then resetting with the first two options is not possible.

Resetting settings from the BIOS menu

Reset using a button on the motherboard

As already mentioned, such a button is quite rare on a motherboard. But nevertheless, we will not miss this method of resetting BIOS settings and will also consider it in a little more detail.

The battery is responsible for storing BIOS settings, so if you temporarily turn off the power or remove it, the parameters will be reset to factory settings.


To completely discharge the remaining voltage, hold down the power button of the system unit for 10-15 seconds. The computer is de-energized, so nothing will happen. Then return the jumper to initial position and assemble the system unit. Factory settings have been installed, now all parameters in the BIOS are set to default.

Removing the CMOS Battery

Speaking of the jumper, we have already mentioned the CMOS battery, which is responsible for storing BIOS settings. Accordingly, if you remove it from the motherboard and then insert it back, you can restore the parameters that were set by default. The algorithm of actions is the same as when using a jumper.


After resetting the settings, you need to reinsert the battery and reassemble the system unit. After turning on the computer, there will no longer be any password on the BIOS, and all parameters will return to the factory state.

Reset on laptop

If the system unit is quite easy to disassemble, then when BIOS reset On a laptop you may encounter some difficulties. It's good if you can go into the BIOS and restore the default settings by selecting the appropriate mode in the “Exit” section. If a password is set on the BIOS, you will have to disassemble the laptop. Turn the laptop over so the back is facing you. Look to see if there is a small hole on the laptop labeled "CMOS".

A little about BIOS

How to reset BIOS settings?

There are 3 ways to restore BIOS settings to default:

  • from the BIOS menu;
  • using a jumper;
  • using a battery.

Laptop owners should take into account one fact: in order to reset the BIOS using the last 2 methods, you will need to disassemble the laptop, i.e. you will lose the warranty on it (if it is still valid). To solve this problem, it is better to contact specialists at the service center.

So, the first method is to restore the default settings from the BIOS menu. First you need to go into the BIOS. This can be done using the “Del”, “F1”, “F2”, “F10” buttons (depending on the motherboard model). If you cannot enter the BIOS due to the password you have set or various errors, then this option is not suitable for you.

You can reset the BIOS settings to factory settings from the menu BIOS output Setup - the required parameter is called “Load Optimal Defaults”

Then you need to find the option to restore default settings. The position and name of this option may vary depending on the motherboard model. Most often this item is called “Reset to Default”, “Factory Default”, “Setup Defaults” or something like that. This item can be located either in one of the tabs or next to the navigation buttons. You must select this option and confirm that you really want to reset all settings to default. If for some reason you do not have this item (or you did not find it), then you can use another method.

After this you need to save the changes. When exiting the BIOS, the system will ask if you need to save the changes. After confirmation, the computer will restart automatically. If you need to set certain settings, you need to go into the BIOS again, make all the necessary changes and restart the computer again.

Method two is to reset the BIOS using a jumper. First, you need to turn off the computer using the corresponding button in the operating system. Then you need to find the switch on the back panel of the system unit (if there is one) and switch it to the “O” (off) position. If there is no such switch, then you just need to unplug the computer from the outlet.

After this, you need to open the case of the system unit. The goal is to get to the motherboard. You need to be very careful when working with computer components, especially avoiding electrostatic discharge, as it can damage some parts of the computer. It is advisable to ground yourself before touching the components.

Next you need to find a 3-pin jumper on the motherboard, usually located next to the CMOS battery. The jumper will be installed on 2 pins (there are 3 in total). It may be labeled CLR, Clear, Clear CMOS, etc. It is advisable to look through the documentation for the motherboard to make it easier to find the jumper.

Then you need to move this jumper to the other 2 pins. For example, if it was on the 1st and 2nd pins, now you need to move it to the 2nd and 3rd. To avoid damaging the pins, you need to pull out the jumper in a vertical position.

After this, you need to press and hold the computer's power button for about 10-15 seconds. Since the computer is turned off, nothing should happen. This will discharge the remaining voltage on the capacitors and reset the BIOS settings. Next, you need to return the jumper to its original position, and then close the system unit case.

Now you can plug in your computer and press the power button. If necessary, you can go into the BIOS to change the settings.

AND last method- Restore BIOS settings to default using a CMOS battery. You need to turn off the computer again, switch the switch to the “O” (off) position and unplug the cord from the outlet. Then you need to open the case of the system unit; to work you will need access to the motherboard. You can get to the battery on your laptop by opening the panel on the bottom of the laptop. If there is no such panel, then you will have to get to the battery using special tools.

After this, you need to remove the battery. It can be located in different places (depending on the motherboard), but most often it is located near the PCI inputs. Next, you need to reset the BIOS by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds. Then you need to install the battery, close the case and connect the computer to the outlet.
